Hartville kitchen is huge. Normally when we arrive there is a mile long line but it always moves fast, for example there were at least 50 people in front of us in line as it wrapped around we got in line at 6:05 we were seated by 6:20. We finished eating by 6:50 and we are a family of four. You get pretty large portions here I like that you can do any of the dinners in a child's portion since many places do not offer kids fish or shrimp dinners but here my children can get either with two sides. It's pretty much a meat and potatoes kind of place so not many vegetarian options. I usually opt for a salad just without the meat. The taco salad and summer salad are my favorites.

The interior was nice with high ceilings plenty of seating. The waitress was good. The food was over priced for the quality. I ordered the peas which obviously not fresh but from a can and Mac and cheese which was pretty good. The fried chicken was over cooked therefore tough and dry. The water has a well water taste . The coffee is terrible they probably used canned coffee and well water. The special of the day was Turkey with stuffing and two sides. Two family members ordered the special. When the special was brought out without stuffing we guess you had to specifically ask for the stuffing when asking for the special??? Who knows.

Hartville Kitchen is celebrating their 48th anniversary. I've been eating here for most of these 48 yrs. I can honestly say that this place hasn't changed over the years. Yes. It's larger, at a different location then when I first came here. The quality od the freshly prepared

The food served here is the very best of Amish cooking! The prices are slightly higher than average, but the generous servings and superb quality make it a good value. During one of my visits I requested a particular spice not common here, but as essential as ketchup or a pepper shaker in Europe, and after promising to ask in the kitchen, the waitress returned with my special request. I took a chance and it paid off! I seriously doubt that in any other restaurant I would have been so lucky! This is only one of many very pleasant memories connected with Hartville Kitchen. The limited business hours begin at 11 am, at which time a long line of patrons is ready to be seated. I can't remember ever coming here when the restaurant was not filled to capacity. The wait time is well worth it. Either be among the first in line or settle for a few minutes of waiting to be seated. Either way, it all pays off when you enjoy the best Amish meal you will remember for a long time! I have eaten here many times, and look forward to many more!

My wife and I have been coming here for quite a few years. The food is always fantastic, but I have to admit we rarely choose beyond the chicken. We've never been disappointed during any visit. We've also brought our church group out here for a monthly lunch at times. While they don't accept reservations, if you keep them apprised of your plans well enough in advance, they will do what they can. The restaurant is very large, but then they also have very large lines at times. It is nice that they also have a bakery shop where you may purchase some of their baked goods such as pies, and their knick knack shop is always a nice place to go through. All in all, it is just a wonderful place for good food.

While this place is extremely popular it is not my favorite. It's supposed to deliver a taste if a home cooked Mennonite meal but since I grew up in a Mennonite family I can get that at home. But on the other hand this place is great for wedding receptions and banquets.

I've eaten here a few times, and I am always so impressed! The whole facility is enormous. Don't be scared off by the huge line because it moves very quickly. They even let us skip about a quarter of the line because we had a baby with us, which was so considerate. The service is always prompt and attentive, but don't expect to be waited on by the same person for the whole meal because it appears to be more of a team effort. The salad and mashed potatoes were the standouts at our most recent visit, although the creamed chicken and macaroni and cheese at other tables looked very good. The prices are unbeatable (4 pc chicken dinner with rolls and 3 sides for $12; whole pies for $9.25!!!!). I cannot believe how cheap the pies are. What really puts this place in the 5 star range is the artwork by Abner Zook they have hanging in the lobby. It is incredible and worth a stop in just to see it even if you aren't hungry.

Be Ready to wait weekend mornings, but it's for a good reason! The food is always great and I really love the broccoli soup. Go get a chop steak while you're at it!

Hubby, the kids and I all enjoyed our time here. The food was delicious. There's nothing new for me to add to all the other good comments. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Because there is nothing SPECTACULAR either. It's very good food with good service, but nothing that makes me say, "I WANNA GO BACK."

Food was okay. I would bet money the real mashed potatoes are real potato flakes and the pie was okay at best. I got the cherry crumb and the crumb topping was an after thought, it was put on after the pie was baked so it offered nothing.

Being local we have eaten here several times. Tried something different, the grilled pork chop. Bad idea . Too tough to cut with the only knife available and it had no seasoning - very bland . Mentioned the poor quality twice and was met with indifference. The comment was our grilled pork chops are always tough let me get you one deep fried. First time I have been disappointed at the Hartville Kitchen.

Very disappointed. I've been here years b4 and the food has drastically went downhill. If you are looking for a true home cooked meal you will be left wanting. Other than the meat the entire dinner tasted like it came out of a cardboard box and reheated. They have a nice facility but have gone cheap on the main reason people come. If I want to eat some cheap canned food I will I will go the the dollar store next time ( no offense dollar stores, I know your stuffs better) also they have no allergies menus.

I was here last week for the first time with my family who lives in the area and was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. I honestly wasn't expecting much from this place since it's in the middle of nowhere but that changed once I tried the food. I had the fried shrimp with mac n cheese, Jojo's, and french fries (for the hubby). The shrimp was delicious and cooked perfectly. The mac n cheese was amazing. It was so creamy and good but not overpowering. The Jojo's were much bigger then I thought they would be so I didn't care for them that much. The french fries were just like other places. We were there at lunch and encountered a line. The wait was only a few minutes at most. The staff had the line moving at a very good pace. Overall, I was impressed and would go back when in the area.

I have been coming to Hartville Kitchen for many years. The food is excellent and services are outstanding. Certainly times of the day determine how busy they are. Early and late are best to avoid the crowds. They are great for groups.

Heartville kitchen is great if u have never left Ohio in ur life and if you have zero expectations and no standards what so ever. The culture is great and feels like home, been going there my entire life, when I visit my family but it is some of the worst food I have ever had in my life, I think the food tasted better in my elementary school cafeteria.

  • Jeff D.

My wife loves the chicken. I have traveled around the menu until settling on the roast pork. Both of these are favorites because we don't make these dishes at home. Try this place for some reasonably good home cooking.

The staff is friendly but the food is blah. The food is not bad but not great. It reminded me of something in a hospital cafeteria.

17w would be my last meal if I was on death row (not that any HK guest ever would be). Get noodles as two of your sides so they come swimming in a bowl of noodle juice into which you can dunk every bite of perfectly-crisp fried chicken. Facilitate binging with rolls (white AND wheat), sweet n sour dressing (lettuce optional), and banana pie. I have been a part of the herd corralled in and out of this place for over 20 years and it's solid. Not one long wait (once sat) or piece of fried chicken that wasn't juicy, plump, and amazing.

Not bad for pedestrian food. Nothing special but not expensive either. Desserts are disappointing. All mass produced and taste as you'd expect for mass production. Supermarket quality, at best.

My family and I love this place. We have tried everything on the menu and have never has anything bad. It is a 40 min. drive from Akron but well worth it. After eating way too much. We waddle into the Bakery/Candy Store for a while then onto the Store. The store is amazing - if you need a gift for that hard to buy for person, you will prob. find it here.

(note: we went in 7/2010) Overpriced hospital food - They must have gotten new owners recently - this is absolutely not Amish/Mennonite in any sense. Six of us ate there and all agreed it was awful. Worse than cafeteria or hospital food. And way overpriced. If they want to be honest, they should just set up buffet lines and drop the price to $4 All You Can Eat. As it stands now, you're basically paying $10 for them to scoop some slop onto a plate, and then adding a tip on top of that. The chilli was just a bowl of ketchup, and for some reason the sweet potato casserole tasted like mac and cheese. Avoid those as sides, and stick to more natural vegetables, if you are being forced to eat here. We hoped that the homemade chocolate/truffles/peanut butter cups would redeem them, but even that was worse than the cheapest store-bought stuff! The ingredients tasted very artificial and cheap. How do you screw that up?!

I grew up with the Hartville Kitchen. Ever since I can remember it was a "treat" to stand in line just to experience the great Almish cooking. It seems that things have gone done hill a bit in the past few years. The rolls and pies are awesome! The other food, no longer has the same home cooked tast that it once did. If you go get ready to eat and run, we were give our check and asked if we wanted dessert several times before half of our party was done eating. Nothing like being rushed out the door for the next person to fill the table.

This place holds nearly 1,000 people and is always packed, but I find Amish food is a lot like cafeteria food -- very basic and plainly cooked American fare. But when you're done eating, and you will be, you can go upstairs to the Thomas Kincaid gallery.

This isn't deep Amish country, but it is the best in Amish cooking. I'm going to keep this simple: 1) expect to wait at least 1 hour if you go on the weekend, 2) order the roast beef (you won't ever get better roast) and at least the noodles as a side, 3) if you can't eat a piece of pie there, take one home. Period. Now, if you care to do some flea market shopping, they have it too, but the restaurant is why you come here.

Excellent Amish cooking in new very clean building. Huge restaurant with attached shops and bakery. Large farmers market behind building make this a destination. I love the chicken but have not had a bad meal. Traditional home cooked meals and delicious pies done only the way the Amish can.

Great Amish style food. Gets very crowded on weekends, closed on Wednesdays. My favorite is the all white chicken dinner.

Great service. Menu is full of comfort foods that are so good for the soul. Our dinner guests were very pleased with the fried chicken, veal cutlets, & hot pork sandwich. Dessert was a hit with rhubarb & strawberry pie. Fresh food, good prices, and lots of great choices. Down home cooking NOT haute cuisine.

this has been my favorite restaurant for as long as i can remember! my family has been coming here since they opened and were at their old location. the food is unbeatable. there is nothing better then good, home cooked, amish food in my opinion. i always get the chicken, but other favorites in the family are the roast beef and roast pork. please, PLEASE don't get a dumb sandwich or salad. the good stuff is right in the MIDDLE of the menu - the entrees! my other personal favorite is the NOODLES - they are amazing and most of the time i get 2 sides of them. other favorites are the mashed potatoes (both dark and light gravy are good), corn, and green beans. their side salads are great too - chopped lettuce and amazing homemade salad dressings. you can't forget the incredible hot rolls they bring out - they are delish!! last but certainly not least, get a piece of PIE (better yet, a whole pie) - the cream pies are the best. I'm particularly fond of the chocolate cream pie. The muraenge on top is light and amazing! be careful - they are closed on sundays and wednesdays. if you want to go without a wait, go on a weekday around 1 or 2 (before the cottonheads start dinner) or first thing saturday while everybody is at the flea market still (eh, the knick knacks can wait an hour) if you don't go here... your life is not complete.

I have been going to the Hartville Kitchen for over 15 years. As a tradition, every Labor and Memorial Day my mother, best friend, and I make the hour long drive to wade through the sea of knick-knacks and antiques which makes up the football field that is the flea market. After a few hours of riffling through junk we meet up and stand in line to wait to enter the restaurant. Even though the line may be stretched out into the lobby, it moves pretty fast and consistently because the dining area is huge. I'll tell you that everything on the menu is delicious(fried chicken, BBQ pork sandwich, any of their soups), but what you have to try are their hot, open-faced sandwiches. The roast pork with mashed potatoes haunts my dreams. It's melt in your mouth amazing and even the half order is filling. I get goose bumps just thinking about that homemade bread soaked in gravy. Obviously, after the main course, you must get dessert. I don't care how full you are, you must have at least one slice of pie. The pie that they make there is easily the best on the planet(banana or coconut cream, blueberry or strawberry if in season). If I was sentenced to death I would probably request that my last meal come from this place.

On my first visit to the Canton/Akron area, I came here for lunch with best friend and her parents. This restaurant/flea market/bakery/chocolate shop is huge. I heard that there's lines during the weekend to experience the Amish cooking. When we got there on a Friday midafternoon, there was a short line. Once we got seated, I got to look over the menu. It's filled with home cooking. With each entree, you have a choice of three sides. I chose the broiled chicken with a salad, green beans, and mashed potatoes with sweet tea. The lunch was delicious. The chicken breast was moist, soft, and so good. The real mashed potatoes were tasty and yummy. It's such a great place for lunch and dinner. For my first venture into the area, a stop here made for a great experience.

I've been coming to the Hartville Kitchen since it was the hole-in-the-wall place on the other side of the street. Although I only drive down a couple times a year, I always enjoy the food. Today a friend and I went, and I had the 17w--otherwise known as the all-white chicken dinner, with mashed potatoes, noodles, and a salad. Every bite was delicious. I only ate one of the breasts and brought the other home, and it was so huge I couldn't finish it. For those of you who are not hillbillies (I come from a long line of Tennesseans), you have to get the mashed potatoes without gravy and put the noodles on top. My only criticism is that normally waitresses do not come back to see if everything is ok. Ours did today, though, and that was a nice change.

  • Jason S.

Food here is average. I would give it 3 stars as far as taste and quality goes. However, because the average dinner plate is between $10-15 without a drink I had to give it a two. There is nothing here that screams at me to come back, and especially not for the price. I will admit, living in Hartville has left me a little bitter about the traffic this place has caused along with the fame it receives for being such an average restaurant. To me, it seems no better in quality or selection than Bob Evans, while at least Bob Evans is cheap. However, the one thing I have found to get here that is somewhat on the cheaper end is their chicken wrap for somewhere around $6. It is longer than a Chipotle burrito and dripping with their amazing ranch dressing, which is maybe the only reason I would come here. That with a side of fries is very filling and still keeps it under $10, which is about as cheap as you can get a full meal here. Overall, not worth the price. I really only eat here when my wife begs for it. Also, there isn't a single Amish employee here for those that hear the reputation that anyone that works here is Amish. There are some conservative Mennonites, which is a big difference. But if you are paying for that part of the experience, it really isn't true.

    (2)
  • Aaron S.

Decent, but nothing amazing. I think when people grow up around Hartville or qualify for a Golden Buckeye card they automatically think this place is the best. I never have really understood the concept of "Amish cooking" either as I would wager that no one that works here is Amish, Mennonites more likely. If "Amish cooking" means meat and gravy, then I guess this qualifies, but then so does Cracker Barrel. It's an OK place to eat, but look for the yellow "Immediate Seating" sign to be illuminated out front, otherwise you'll file through a long line like cattle and battle old folk fart clouds as you wait for a table. Give a try and see for yourself but I don't see what makes it tourist Mecca that it has become. I've lived within a 5 minute drive of "The Kitchen" for over a year now and my wife and I have yet to go there again, so that kind of shows you how lukewarm we are on this place.

My family recently took me here while I was on vacation. I was surpised to see such a large retail operation in the middle of Hartville. I was expecting a tiny hole in the wall. The food was good if you like home-style Midwestern type fare. I had the fired Chicken, which was really good but I'm not sure if it compares with "Barberton Chicken." First Impressions: A family of Amish people waiting in line in front of us--that's usually a sign of good cookin'! The place is huge! They keep is staffed very well and things running like clockwork. When we arrived the line was almost out the front door but we were sitting at a table in about 20 minutes.

I have eaten here over a number of years both when I lived just down the road in Uniontown and then after I moved on visits. I was disappointed this time that the menu and more importantly the food was so poor. They have totally lost what made them so good years ago. We went down to Sugarbush and had an excellent Amish experience.

Hartville Kitchen has been around for as long as I can remember and what amazing food they have! I have only had excellent meals here and always look forward to going back! The long lines on Saturday tell just how good this Amish restaurant is! I always get the yummy broiled fish or fried shrimp or the combination.

  • Edward H.

As the other reviews (mostly) state, it's excellent Amish-style comfort food at reasonable prices. I cannot explain the few 2-3 star ratings; if you polled 1000 people who've been here i doubt 10 would rate it that low and most everyone hereabouts loves this place. No, it's not fine dining, and no, it's not "cuisine"--it's comfort food! Great homemade salad dressings, homemade pies (take one home from the bakery next door if you don't have room after dinner). I have never had anything here that was not tasty and well-prepared. Although they do promptly ask about dessert and leave your check, take the time you need--they are just efficient, not rushing you, and you will get all the water and coffee refills you need--you won't be ignored, and you won't be encouraged to leave. And yes, there can be long lines, but if you don't mind eating a little earlier than the main crowd (e.g between lunch and dinner) you can get in in 5-10 minutes many days. This place has the most efficient system I have seen for seating people; tables are instantly bussed, those waiting in line are asked about the number in their party, and it moves as fast as anyone could move it. I recommend the place and you will enjoy it VERY much (unless maybe you're a bit snobbish about your dining preferences, in which case go elsewhere and leave the table for the rest of us!).

I was here recently for the first time in probably twenty years. The new building certainly is nicer than standing in the line wrapped around the old place on a flea market Saturday in the oppressive heat. We went on a Saturday at lunch time and must have had to wait an hour to get a table. The food was ok, but not nearly as good as the way it used to be. The service was still very good though. It is reasonably priced though. So it's ok for when you're with someone who likes this sort of a place and you're going as a group.

Don't listen to people who are too shi-shi and la-la for Hartville Kitchen. It is what it is - a down home, simple, comfort food place. They pile on the potatoes, noodles, chicken and roast beef. It's not the healthiest but it is the yummiest in its category. The potatoes the real. The beef is slow roasted. The chicken is broasted to perfection. The pie and desserts are out of this world. And the rolls, oh the rolls they are warm, soft and toastilicious. They will literally make your eyes roll back in your head as you sigh a happy sigh of love. So yea, go to Hartville Kitchen if you want a meal like you wish your mom or grandma would still make :)

I've eaten at the Kitchen since I was a child. It used to be much better than it is today. They've watered down the mashed, the chicken and roast beef are in much smaller portions. But the food is decent. It is a good experience to eat there. The shopping is good and the whole atmosphere is good. I ordered a to go meal today and the food was a little better than fair. Nearly 12 bucks for a roast beef dinner. I will eat there again, I will have a coupon each time.

Second time back for broasted chicken. The broasted chicken is juicy, tender and delicious as a result of pressure frying. I am guessing there's a little bread crumb added to the breading. We tried the potato casserole. It was very delicious. The green bean side is cooked with ham. It's okay but needs to cook a lot longer. Not a lot of flavor as compare to Cracker Barrel or Southern Green Beans. We finished our meals with Peanut Butter pie and butterscotch pie. Very delicious. The pie crust is very tender and flaky. Overall it's a great home cooked meal experience and comfort food place. The service is very good and friendly wait staffs.

Being from a foodie town, it's hard for me to give more than 2-3 stars to most restaurants in Ohio, if only because of the apparent lack of fresh and healthy options. However, the Hartville Kitchen is in a fun location, has nice servers, and some of the better food I've had in Ohio. This place is definitely geared for those enjoying the shops at Hartville Marketplace, and has a get you in, get you out feel, which is ok with me. They have a good selection of salads, and some decent "dinner plates" which they offer for lunch (they're only open until 3pm). They have a selection of about 15 sides, and you get to choose 3 with each meal. I got the broiled fish, and for sides I recommend the tossed salad, macaroni and cheese and the hot sauce (rice with a spicy sauce). The green beans were canned, watery, and gross. The rest was good. The clientele is pretty standard for what I've seen around Ohio. Skewed on the older/unhealthy side. The dude at the table next to us kept ripping loud farts. It was pretty unappetizing. Good thing I was done eating.
