Went on a quick tour of my girlfriend's old eateries when we went back east to her hometown of Akron, OH. House of Hunan was her go-to place for cheap, disgusting, and thoroughly satisfying Chinese food. Unfortunately, they had changed ownership since she had been here last year and apparently the food has suffered completely because of it. First, we made it there at 5:00pm on a Saturday night and the place only had one other family sitting down to eat. For those of you who do not eat out often, this is NOT a good sign. When the Saturday dinner rush consists of three people who are just glaring at each other accusingly as they eat in tepid silence, walk the other way. Next, the whole place is painted this deep red color without anything else up on the walls. I assume they plan on making the place a bit more vibrant down the road with additional decor, but as it stands right now its gloomy, a bit claustrophobic, and whatever paint they sprayed all over the walls is also sprinkled over everything else. Seriously, on everything; when we wiped downy he child's seat for our son, the white wipe came away with a burgundy tint that made us worry if they had left anything open in the kitchen when hosing down everything else with color. Lastly, the food ... it really sucks. Even for cheap and disgusting Chinese food, when you're not expecting anything much at all, it sucks. Everything we got came out of a freezer bag and was flash fried to greasy, stale imperfection. The family that was there was served in these plastic tub trays that looked like they had been pre-cooked, frozen, and microwaved to order. Most of the sauces came in plastic rip-packet variety, though their sweet and sour came in a tub and shared the same red color as the walls. My girlfriend apologized profusely. She remembered everything being fresh, non-conforming so you know that all the appetizers were made in house, and a good, cheap, delicious experience that kept her coming back week after week. The only thing we took away from House of Hunan now was stomach aches and our son crying after eating a crab rangoon. If you have fond memories of this place before they sold it, do not come back. Keep those memories and hold them tight to cherish, the House of Hunan you once knew is gone with only this suck-fest of restaurant in its shell.

This place is a breath of fresh air compared to the downtown Akron location. Three of us showed up for the 50% off Sushi/Rolls Sunday special and were very satisfied. Each of us got three rolls and had plenty left to take home, the bill was just under $40 including tip - doesn't get much better than that! Unlike the other location, the fish here tasted fresh and the portions were more than generous. The oranges for 'dessert' were appreciated as well. This will probably be our new go-to place for weekend sushi!

The management has changed since my last review and with it the food (for the good)! The steam dumplings and Gen. Tso are still great staples, but with the addition of a sushi bar and a new interior design House of Hunan should not be ignored.

New owners are terrible. Even ruder than old owner, but at least the old owners cooked good tasting food. Food tastes no good now. They are also false advertisers. Sign in window says free pop with lunch special. I ate in, and they told me free pop only for take out. Sign does not say anything about take out only. Also they charge you more if you eat in. $5.75 if you take out with free pop, or $6.00 if you eat in with no free pop. I'll never go back to this crappy place again.

We really enjoyed lunch here. Dined in. Ordered sesame chicken, hibachi, and various sushi rolls. Everything was fresh and made with high quality ingredients. Service was good. Food hot and fast. They have great specials, and prices were great for the quality ingredients and selections. We came during grand opening and sushi rolls were 50% off. Sakura in Fairlawn has always been my fav sushi spot & I enjoyed when they had half price sushi roll night, but even Sakura did not have their specialty maki rolls at such a good price & made and served as quickly as this place. And they were great! Manager did say this House of Hunan is unrelated to the others(different owners). The only thing I did not like, and why I did not give them 5 stars, was that they do not serve alcohol and all drinks are in a cooler. (Not much selection- 4-5 different cans of Coke products) Ambiance was ok. They tried (new tables, booths, plates, and decor) but it still had a to-go restaurant feel. This is an excellent place for good Chinese/Japanese food, good ingredients, service and price, but not a fancy place. I would definitely go back or place to-go orders in the future. I hope the quality stays as high after the grand opening.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
