One thing I have to say about the West African International Market & Take Out Restaurant is that their business name is not long enough. I think with a few extra words added in there, it could really stand out from all the local competitors. There really aren't any competitors to be honest, because this place is one of a kind. It's - get this - West African. And get this - it's an International Market (selling stuff from all over the West African World). And it's also... you'll never believe this from the name, but I swear it's true... it's a Take Out Restaurant!! No seating... take out only. And you won't care, because it's delicious. What to get: Curry Chicken 5.99 What else is good: Patties I feel fortunate to have discovered this little Gem on the East Side. I'd actually never eaten West African food before, but that changed on a fateful freezing snowy January morning in Buffalo, NY. I was heading to Mike's Subs because it had just won review of the day and I wanted to re-acquaint myself with the taste. Unfortunately they are indefinitely closed. So I continued randomly driving, as one does when on Bailey south of UB South Campus, and I discovered a colourful little shack on the East side of the street, which you can see in the pictures. I asked her what she had, and she said, patties, and curry chicken, and curry goat. Not being a goat fan, I ordered curry chicken ($5.99) and a pattie. I started with the pattie, which wasn't amazing but had a very amazing spicy filling, the likes of which I had never tasted before. It was so different to Caribbean patties, and had such a kick, that I would recommend it to people to try, based on that alone. The real showstopper is the Curry Chicken. It's boneless, and is delicious. It's not too spicy. It's almost bland but it does have a really nice taste to it. It's filling and yummy. The white rice that she serves with it is BY FAR the best white rice I've eaten in the area, which is odd because there's no reason why other places couldn't make fluffy white rice taste this good, but none of the Indian & Chinese & Latin places really do. The second time I came here, the white rice had been replaced by a reddish yellowy rice, which was more flavourful, seasoned, and a little spicy, maybe even wetter... and utterly delicious! It comes with some cooked cabbage on the side, and that's yummy too. The price is as amazing as the taste if not moreso. I'll stop by here for another go at some point soon, that's how good it was. In a city as amazing food-wise as Buffalo, if I go to a place multiple times it is probably good. Warning: the food is microwaved. I usually won't put up with that but in this little place with this lovely home cooking for cheap, I will. So don't expect anything else and if it turns you off too much, skip it. I asked her where she is from, she is from Ghana. The home of Michael Essien, although she didn't know who he was. Their national team are the Black Stars, their colours are red, green and gold, and they are one of the most populated nations in West Africa, but nowhere near the population of Nigeria. They are a coastal nation. Someone from this nation is known as a Ghanaian and their capital is Accra. Thus ends your mini-geography lesson. Now get down here and try the food! By the way, this part of Bailey is not a bad area. It's a black area, and a poor area, that doesn't mean it's a "bad area". You will be fine. I come down here on a regular basis for Bailey Seafood sandwiches. I've never had any trouble whatsoever. Night or day.
