I'm in a more sour mood than usual, since I recently noticed that the Mooney's in Bay Ridge has also closed. Well, Sharlene's replaced Mooney's Flatbush branch. You'd be stunned to learn that I'm dismayed by the results. You might think I object most to the candles and fancy flowers. What is this, the Stork Club for social workers and IT gurus? Well, the worst part is really the fact that one of the Mooney's bartenders is still behind the bar. I don't begrudge him his job. But I do begrudge the bar's owners their malicious (and successful) attempt to give me permanent nostalgia pangs for the days of OTB, clear beer, and old men listening to Mets games on their headphones in the bar.

Sharlene's plays some of the best jazz in the city. All the bartenders are discrete, mellow, but they mix solid drinks and they are very alert. This is a professional drinking hole, a classic American bar with a bit of grunge and dive, but bar soul.

Excellent bar! Glad Sharlene saw the potential in this bar. It used to be an old man's bar. They kept the old-style, slightly dive-y interior, but gave it a more pleasant & welcoming vibe They have a great jukebox and a pinball machine! It's a fun place, yet the noise level is generally moderate, so you can actually hear what your friends are saying. Drinks are reasonable for this neighborhood. And while I've never made it that early, Sharelene's blackboard (generally adorned with clever quotes) offers some impressive happy hour deals) The Koshertini with a Kosher pickle is awesome. Great Manhattans! They even have a good, dry rose wine. They also occasionally have great fundraiser events with generous prizes.

So now I can say I've been here a few times, and the place continues to grow on me. Lot's of space, nice bartenders (maybe a little over-anxious with the carding, but I guess that's not something you want to mess with), board games, very wood-y bar feeling..., $3 beers before 7pm every day, decent jukebox, very mixed and nice brooklyn crowds, and they were open on back-to-back days during the hurricane/frankenstorm/days-when-it-was-a-little-windy. I'm sure this last point will be super-relevant to anyone reading this review in the future... you know, for that next 100-year storm.

This place fills a niche I recently noticed: if you want a cocktail in PS/PH area, like a gimlet or whiskey sour, you only have two options: a pub which is beer-centric and where no one orders a cocktail or one of those pricey cocktail lounges where the drinks are spectacular but also $9. At Sharlene's, they have a full bar and all types of appropriate glasses for whatever drink you want. I go here late late on Friday in summer when I can't sleep and want to chill, and Sunday nights which is the best time.

This is already an interesting bar. You wouldn't think it belongs in park slope/heights border. It has a dive bar vibe and is filled with a variety of people. The three dollar drafts during happy hour are well poured and are varied. Will definitely return :)

This is the type of neighborhood bar that makes you love your area and brag about it to every friend you have. Chill-as-hell atmosphere, comfortable table seating for friends, plenty of bar-stool seating, and a super-friendly bartender. Everything I look for in a go-to bar. Extra points for having MooThunder stout cans and hot bourbon apple cider. ADDITIONAL extra points for having board games. Winning in scrabble makes hard apple cider taste even better. :)

I am a self proclaimed fan of dive bars. I try to ignore it, but I just can't. They have character and Sharlene's is no exception. The bartender has a bunch board games behind the bar that can be used at no price. Nothing like enjoying an adult beverage with friends while playing a game of Scrabble. Don't look for any ambiance here, but do look for a laid back good time.

I was skeptical of this place because I had always seen it as a career alcoholic type bar. Seems that's not the case anymore. Now it's just a lovely standard dark neighborhood bar with super nice and friendly bartenders. Yes the age range is wider than most bars in the city and I like that about it. And yes there were a few dudes at the end who clearly sit on those seats like every day, but not as intense as the old skool O'Connors crowd like I expected. Nice beer selection, plenty of space, bartenders are fast with awesome memories and there are pinball machines and board games. Totally worth checking out!

Good place for drinking with the guys and watching world cup. Good beer selection and the AC is pumping.

Well I ran into that issei bartender again...yet. I brought flowers to the establishment to I hoped mollify bad feelings. This time, he had his thugs-the punk guy and the evil looking little man-drag me down to the basement where he-unbeknownst to management, kept an Indonesian Rhinoceros. The animal had apparently been taken down the stairs as an infant; it can no longer ascend without modification to the structure. He explained that the animal had been fed only 'kettle chips' and 'keg foam' as well as receiving systematic, regular beatings. Thus the eyes of the shackled beast were filled with intense, possibly psychotic rage. The issei told me he would loose the animal to attack me unless I paid him a fixed sum "for existing" per week. He also said he could do anything he wished to anybody because "Nobody stops the rhino" and "his boys" would "fuck me all up anyway". I was then thrown down the Q train stairs by his goons. I am upset.

Thomas B let me call YOU the C word because I have been coming here for years and know THE BARTENDER IN QUESTION. Your GF probably deserved it if he called her anything. PLEASE DON'T COME BACK because we don't like JUDGIE'S IN Sharlenes. You & your GF go back to Idaho where you more then likely came from if you cant handle a bar in Brooklyn!

  • Tam J.

I typically enjoyed this bar until last night. The bartender did not like his customers to question his drinks. When told that one of the drinks was too spicy, he said we didn't know what we wanted and charged me for another drink. When I asked what happened to customer service, he said verbatim "that that bullshit doesn't happen here!" Thanks idiot! No need to spend my money here again!

I just ended up here because a certain yelping friend had to pee. Her full bladder led us to this wonderful bar. What's good about it? 1. Decent cocktails at reasonable prices. 3 of us started with Dark and Stormys. While not quite as good as what I've had at Patty Boom Boom in DC (WHAT? something that's BETTER in DC than NYC? Is that possible?? Apparently so, woo woo), it still was well done and had enough kick to make one of my companions intoxicated after 3 of them. I was feeling relatively sober though, so I suppose he's a lightweight like that or was just looking for an excuse to poorly attempt to hit on a lady- but I digress. Anyway, I also had a bourbon based cocktail that I felt was superior to the Dark and stormy but unfortunately I'm blocking on the name (hmm, maybe I wasn't as sober as I thought I was). 2. Good jukebox that plays music just at the right level where you can clearly hear it but can also tune it out and converse with your companions. 3. It's CLEAN. I really was amazed how clean it was. The decor was dive bar like but the cleanliness made it clear this place was not a dive. So nice to go into a bar's restroom and not be inspired to puke. I also dug the candles on all the tables. 4. Friendly bartenders who happily engage the clientale. The only downer was the draft beer options. I mean there were a couple good options but it really wasn't that extensive and too many macrobeer choices if you ask me. If I were the bar owner or manager, i'd definitely ditch a couple of them and choose different beers. Maybe I've just become a snob like that... Regardless, that is a very minor blemish and if I lived in the area, I'd definitely frequent this bar often.

This is easily my friends and I's new favorite bar. We just recently discovered it and can't stop going back. First off, $3 drafts during happy hours. Great beer selection too. Taps that include craft brews and some canned choices too. They have a few pinball machines, a jukebox, and a big selection of board games to play. The mood of the bar is always very very friendly and open. I feel like any person could come here and feel comfortable. Also- there is a 24 hour diner right next door..and a pretty good wing place as their other neighbor. They let you bring in takeout and eat it there. It's perfect. Check it out!! We love this bar. So glad that I live nearby.

Pretty good beer selection, Low Key Trivia night is good fun. There really isn't more you need to know about this place. I'll often take friends from out of town to check it out.

My Brooklyn host called Sharlene's a dive bar, but I'm here to tell you it's everything you'd want and anything you make of it. Claiming the bar's namesake is often behind the bar herself only made me feel better about taking in this local bar as part of my most recent trip to Brooklyn. It's classic with flowers in vases and candles evenly placed along the bar, but hip with the latest twists on retro cocktails and stocking some of the latest trends in spirits. It has a great beer selection (though I haven't been to a bar in Brooklyn that didn't) and the bartender was the perfect amount of friendly and business. If I lived here...this would be my bar.

No TVs, good space, board games and fairly cheap. My new neighborhood standard.

Sharlene's is a pretty cool place, I gotta say. I've been here twice now and I have yet to be disappointed. Although, I do wonder if the people calling it a dive have ever actually BEEN in a dive bar... because to me, it's just a normal pub. There are not blacked out windows, nor an exclusive monopoly on Natural Ice, nor pee on the floor in the bathroom - in fact, nothing in here in bajankity. Which I'm pretty sure disqualifies it as a dive. What Sharlene's IS, is a good, old school neighborhood bar. They have awesome 60s music on the jukebox, three dollar happy hour beers (awesome selection, too - I got Allegash white ale (from Maine!) the first time I was here, and local regulars who keep to themselves and/or start up a normal, every day conversation with you... no hipsters here, just workin' people from the neighborhood. The one time I was here at night, it got busy but not crowded - this place is pretty big and holds a good crowd while not being overwhelming. It's basically my kinda place. The only issue for me, which has nothing to do with the actual bar, is the location... it's on Flatbush as opposed to Vanderbilt, which is where most of the other bars in Prospect Heights are. You can't really bar hop from here, but I definitely recommend it for an after work beverage.

This is banana pants! Why haven't I been here before? This is sooo my type of place. OK. Pause. Confession. I work out at the gym across the street and I always envisioned it as a seedy lil joint with leprechauns hobbling around. Come to find it, this bar is laid back, pretty roomy, and has clean bathrooms. The service is super chill and friendly. Disclaimer; my friend is a bartender here, but I would still go here regardless. The juke box has a random but good mix of Motown and Rock tunes. Best of all they have board games, which is perfect for a Sunday evening out for drinks. I think this should be a bar requisite.

  • Sydney B.

A great local spot that this Manhattanite crosses a river for. It's spacious, has several quality beers on tap (and a couple of cheapies too), a pretty good amount of seating, decent bathrooms, a big screen for the World Cup, close to the subway (Q, 2/3, as well as the Atlantic-Pacific hub), etc. The friendly bartenders might have even given us some chocolate once :)

    (4)
  • Malarie B.

I'm updating to confirm that this place is still classy as fuck. Also adding that the crowd is a bit more mature than what you'd find at some of the other places around here, which makes for a calm atmosphere pretty much always.

    (5)
  • Dara M.

Been here twice. The decor looks really dated, but the beer specials before 7pm make the place what it is. Simple beer, simple service. sometimes you really don't want more than that. both times I came here were off peak times, and there was plenty of seating options, both at the bar, and at a table.

I will try to keep this brief but forgive me because I love this place. I live in the neighborhood and am a regular here. They treat me accordingly, I tip well, and it's a fantastic mutualistic relationship. Very simply, be nice to the bartenders and they will take care of you. They encourage you to bring in food from outside of the establishment, they have board games, they have a wide selection of liquor and they have a lengthy happy hour. They also have the cleanest bathrooms ever. EVER. There is no television and great music so you (or those with you) are not distracted if you want to have a nice conversation. If you want television, go to the sports bar down the street. Sometimes it's crowded but people who bitch about places being crowded are stupid because that's basically saying "I want this business to fail". I want this place to stay open forever, no questions asked, and I will be a regular here until I move somewhere else. In the event that that happens I will have a tearful goodbye with the bartenders and will buy them all shots. Go here. You will love it and if you don't, that's most likely your fault. Bring in some hot wings from Wing Wagon, too and share with me.

Great bar. Been around forever the atmosphere is always relaxed and unpretentious. Good after work or prenets game spot. Try the Dark and Stormy!

Was by Grand Army Plaza looking for a bar to grab a drink. Happened to come across this lovely little place. Awesome bartender. Blondish-haired girl. Can't remember her name but she was very nice. Drinks were avg priced. Definitely recommended.

I'm here a lot. Probably because of their awesome happy hour special and lots of space. $3 drafts from 1-7. Unbeatable. You can bring food. MMM. They bartenders are all pretty great. Needs a little more light though- it would really make a difference! Especially in the booth area. I'd spend a lot more time there if I could read a book while boozing, but not enough light!

    (5)
  • Alec F.

super rude bartender (female). thanked her for the drinks, no response, no eye contact. overly loud music. seems like it had potential but bad experience.

  • Emma S.

This place is everything I want in a bar. It's friendly. It's unpretentious. It plays early 60s girl groups and Johnny Cash on the jukebox, and not so loudly that you & your friends will have to yell to be heard. The barstaff are cordial and quick to put an affordable draught in your hand. Bonus points for cozy banquette seating if you can snag the corner table.

In about 48 hours, you'll be pulling off an elaborate heist. Delroy Lindo is the guy who swears that this is his last job; he's retiring to Arizona where he has a home, and he'll play golf 6 days a week. Sam Rockwell is in charge of studying the security system. Cilian Murphy is the heavy; he is in charge of crowd control. He doesn't like you and the feeling is mutual. You? Who cares, you're going to be rich after this job.'Okay, you're not really going to be involved in a heist. However, Sharlene's is the kind of place that makes you feel like you're in a damn good flick. The lights are low and the music isn't deafening. The BoSox t-shirt-wearing bartender seems to know his stuff. The Guinness flows like water here. They seem to always have a good selection of specials.

    (4)
  • Joanna M.

This might just be my new favorite place. Sharlene's has the feel of a dive bar without any of the griminess. With two pinball machines, a jukebox in the back, and plenty of seating, it's easy to enjoy a round here without any pretension or needing to empty your bank account. Light fare is also available for snacking. And board games are behind the bar. You won't regret stopping by...

  • Tanya T.

I was pleasantly surprised with Sharlene's atmosphere. The room is much longer than it is wide, and there is a row of seats/tables on the opposite wall parallel to the bar. There are small candles at each table, which gives it a surprisingly romantic vibe. In fact, I would suggest Sharlene's for that awkward first date when you want to do more than just "grab a coffee" but don't want to commit yourselves to a full meal. It's the perfect, quiet setup for some drinks and first date "get to know you" conversation. We came on a Thursday night around 8ish, so it wasn't packed by any means. It reminds me of the kind of bar my parents would go to in their home town and refer to it as "their bar." I got the feeling most of the patrons there were regulars. I wasn't the biggest fan of their beer selection on tap. I got the Blue Point lager and then remembered I don't like Blue Point all that much, but looking at the rest of the beers on tap, I didn't really see anything more appealing than that. Their table menus listed a better, larger, tap selection which must revolve. I suppose I was just there on an off night. On the other hand, I saw hot toddies on their menu and vowed I will return to try one. There are also notes on their table menus that encourage people to bring food in. I will definitely be back with some wings from Wing Wagon next door.

Wow - i seem to be the only one to buck the trend on this and that makes me wonder if its not you its me or something but i have to put this out there anyway. I have gone in here a few different times and was thrilled to find that they had cider on tap....the first time there were two bartenders and one was fine, not overly friendly but amiable, but the other (some Asian guy) was a full on A55H073. I was alone, just stopping to see how the place is so i made small talk with the fisrt bartender with the standard banter. The second one, i asked a simple question about the obscure football (real, not American) jersey he was wearing. I asked what team it was (yes i know all the major teams and their colors, but this was bright green black and orange. so i asked "what team is that?" he looked at me with annoyance, pointed to the tiny crest on his chest (halfway down the bar) and said "it says it right here" Dic* I went back twice after this and the same thing transpired. At one point i was even getting on well with the bartender on first shift and this ray-of-sunshine jerk comes in and proceeds to ignore me except to throw my drinks at me until i left with a sudden and mysterious gastronomical EMERGENCY just as though someone put saline (visine) in my drink.... Never going back

I like Sharlene's. They have a nice jukebox and lots of space and no one I don't know talks to me. I like that sometimes.

Cute place, really clean. Seemed slow for a saturday night though. My husband and I went here for a friend's birthday celebration. They had allowed them to bring pizza in. Also, there were 2 pin ball machines!

I was pretty skeptical about Sharlene's as my friends and I came upon it. I was hoping to go to Beer Table on 7th Ave, but this was right by Christie's Jamaican Patty, where I'd just had dinner. Once inside, my doubts were erased. The music is good, the patrons easy-going and open. I didn't catch the name of our bartender but she had some arms tats and was friendly. Tap selection is limited but with some quality choices (I was very happy with Smuttynose Winter and Goose Island IPA). Same goes for whiskey selection, both scotch and bourbon. They also had some interesting cocktails. I got the spiced cider and bourbon, which was pretty good. All these things, combined with table space plus board games made for a good night, will definitely return next time I'm in the area.

  • Anne H.

Wow, I've been slacking off in my reviewing. All ya'll foodies can lash me with a wet piece of pappardelle. So Sharlenes...where do we begin. You lack the following things a) ambiance b) character c) comfortable chairs d) food e) a jukebox with music released after the Reagan presidency. What you do have is 3-dollar anything on tap before 7 pm. Win!!

I love this bar! The peeps are great and the bar is chill. Great music in the box, not too loud not too soft. You dont leave with a sore throat from screaming like in most places and it's not (yet) full of lame-a$$ hipsters! This isnt the kind of place you want to go if you are dead inside and constantly need to be surrounded by hordes of screaming people and deafening music. This is a neighborhood bar, a nice place to have a drink, chat with some friends, and relax. There arent enough of these places anymore. Would be the best place on the planet if there were a Buck Hunt game and a photo booth...but I guess that would just attract more hipsters ;)

The best parts of Commonwealth have moved over to Sharlene's*... which is to say, this is Sharlene's bar. Aptly titled, right? Soft opening was last night (5/7/09) and in her own words it was "like an episode of 'It's Your Life'!" (Sort of like Cheers, too, since everyone knows her name.) The bar is huge and has great mood lighting, but not so dark you don't know who you're talking to. Juke-box in the back seemed to have a good array of songs, but I've yet to parse its contents. There are a bunch of tables in the back as well as an extra counter parallel to the bar in the front and a few choice window-bar seats. Drinks are well-mixed and affordable. Behind the bar is a massive mirror that allows you to spy on the attractive people behind you as well as check your bangs/hair (and, okay fine, make the room look even bigger). The only reason I'd want to take a half-star away would be because it's no longer a block from my house! * This is not to say Commonwealth is closed, as it's not. But you know... I'll play favorites every now and then.

went here for a date on a friday. very good spot. never got insanely crowded, the way so many other bars can. and the music was definitely hoppin'. it wasn't too loud to talk over, and was a real conversation piece. of course, this was before we realized it was a juke box. i thought it was just some schizophrenic ipod playlist. "really? ABBA? now the theme from shaft? alright." the beer selection is solid, and prices are spot on. $6 for a coney island lager. saw lots of people drinking some fancy schmancy looking cocktails. they all had smiles on their faces.

Sharlene's is one of my favorite bars. Their happy hour lasts for huge expanses of time and means $3 drafts of a very solid variety of beers. Bartenders (especially Matt) are extremely friendly and attentive. Ambiance is simple and a bit odd. Trivia night is Mondays and starts at 830/9. Is truly an experience and is fun to return to. (Hint: Check their Facebook so that you know which movie will be the subject of the Movie Rounds. Showing up having not watched the film ruins a team's score). Did a great job covering the World Cup. Doesn't normally have TV's but used a projection screen and opened very early for (almost) all games.

I happened to walk in on xmas eve bc I had nothing else to do. been spying the place from my precor machine at crunch across the street. Greated by THE Sharlene, she was super kind, friendly & welcoming. The bar smelled good, it was tastefully decorated with old b&w photography and new vintage inspired chairs & booths. The drink menu was good - from the traditional, seasonal & some fun stuff like the Antioxidant Martini. Going back tonight!

Shuhei is the nicest bartender ever!!! I go there every Friday and he's fast with the drinks and pours a perfect Guinness complete with shamrock in the foam.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason to come here. The bartender (asian guy) is an unhappy, unhelpful, and arrogant moron who should find another line of work. But even if it weren't for his awful attitude, why spend a minute here when they're so many other spots nearby with personality?

    (1)
  • Ben S.

Great, cozy neighborhood bar. Pretty good beers on tap, hot drinks available in the winter, decent prices, and never too crowded. The Asian bartender, as others have noted, is a (the?) problem here, though. He walks away from my friend while she's in the middle of ordering (three drinks; you can't remember three drinks?), comes back with an $8 hot toddy containing, based on the taste and complete transparency, zero liquor, and then is an asshole about it when politely asked to top it off. Sorry you couldn't get a job in the LES, bro, but at some neighborhood joint in Brooklyn it's part of your job not to be a jackass. The other bartenders are great, including a gal I take to be Sharlene herself and an Irish guy, also very friendly. But I may just turn around and go somewhere else next time I see that guy working; I don't have enough money to spend it on his tips.

  • Dave P.

Sharlene, and by extension Sharlene's Bar are both great. She makes a killer drink, the prices are right and the atmosphere is dim and large without feeling big. Nice really long bar and a jukebox that definitely rivals commonwealths. Really great crowd as well.

  • Beth H.

Amazing bar I loved it. I was only there from 4-7pm, so I do not know what the night life is like, but when I went it was great nice and low key. the bartender was friendly and personable, he even let us have tastes of the taps when I had trouble deciding which to get. Also the music they played was 50's music, none of the top 40 stuff. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience, and 3 dollar draft beers are the best.

  • Jose G.

Twice, when other Prospect Heights/Fort Greene spots have failed me for World Cup morning matches, I have found my way to Sharlene's. There may not have been many people, but there was a sense of camaraderie between staff and customers, not to mention a crystal clear projection of each match, and the first time some bagels and cream cheese. Sharlene's, I think I'm falling for you, and I hardly even know you.

  • Katja L.

This place is amazing! It's absolutely my favorite spots of all. The bartenders are cool, and there's one really hot one too. Happy Hour rocks (all drafts $3 1-7pm) and this includes cider!! Like for real! You can bring in your own food, dance to a jukebox and play board games stored behind the bar. The crowd is a bit on hipster side. But this spot rocks hard!

8pm Saturday. me, the boyfriend, the 3rd most bored bartender i've ever met, 3 cold beers and a jukebox all hopped up on credits playing song after song of my personal favorites. when what to my wondering eyes should appear? the grinch of flatbush -- AKA sharlene herself, showing up to make us poor drunken Who's pay for the juke! (warranting a 1/5 deduction from the irish judge) i don't mind a dead bar--just the opposite, in fact. but seriously--making your only 2 customers pay for the juker? come on now. i was expecting a little more hospitality--- like perhaps a freaking round (or at least a shot) on the house! but to be forced to PAY for juke which had previously been FREE? it's indecent. but let's start at the beginning. the set up: back in the day, sharlene's was the most kickass irish dive in whoville ("whoville" is herein defined as the trinity of green/slope/heights) and had been around for 20-sumodd years. sharlene took over last spring and re-did the place. i hadn't been here since Mooney's went to that big guinness spout in the sky, and i have been curious to see what the new owners had done to it. the scene: with the dartboard gone AWOL, there's really nothing to do here at all except drink beers and shots and play the radical jukebox (generously stocked with guided by voices and the replacements in addition to the requisite cash/zep permutations). i'm all for the newish, spit-clean bathroom, but the 50s-style vinyl-covered cafe chairs and tables are weirdly out of context, especially since new-mooney's doesn't serve food. what they do serve is 7 kinds of beer and plenty of whiskeys (thumbs WAY up). the pay off: i think with time and patience, sharlene's has potential to turn into a favorite nabe joint, and hopefully sharlene herself will loosen up a bit. times are tough, but you don't win regs by gouging them, honestly.

Matt the bartender is very cool, Sharlene herself is behind the bar fairly often, and you can get a Christie's beef patty or veggie patty at any hour of the night. This is all I need.

Any bar that has a good happy hour, and let's me order food from next door to soak up all that happy houring, is good by me!

Came here for a birthday party. The crowd sort of ebbed and flowed. Packed then empty, packed then empty. But the bartender was fantastic! She had a smile on her face and even gave me a free beer on about my 4th trip to the bar. I'm a sucker for a nice bartender. Nothing makes me not want to go back to a place more than a stuck up drink-maker. Anyway, pretty big place, right off the train. And pinball machines. PINBALL MACHINES.

Sharlene's is a great neighborhood bar with some of the nicest bartenders in the world. My husband, who doesn't drink, spent most of the summer here watching the World Cup. He ordered sodas and stayed for hours. No one cared, probably because the beer and the soda are basically the same price throughout the day. There's a huge TV and while some food is available, they have plenty of menus on hand for delivery. It's great to have such a welcoming place nearby.

What an awesome jem just about 5 blocks from Prospect park. Great booths and dark atmosphere, awesome juke box and Southern twinged drinks. A bit out of the way if you're not from around these parts but great for groups. They also have board games you can take out!

A blue-collar drinking bar, with a good jukebox and cheap beer. It's location on Flatbush keeps it just seedy enough to scare-off the Park Slope Parents Association and ladies who choose to breast feed in bars. Yet, it's not seedy at all. Nor is it a hipster den. Just a good solid bar, with friendly bartenders.

As far as neighborhood bars go, this one's a good one to stop at after a day at the office. Sometimes on Friday nights they have free food over happy hour, and the staff are generally really awesome, friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is okay...could use some warming up, but the bar itself is beautiful. Their happy hour specials are great! They don't serve food here, but they have a binder behind the bar with menus from every delivery joint in the neighborhood, and you can have it delivered to the bar. They recently started serving pretzels, the same you'd buy from street vendors, but these are fresh and delicious. I agree with what some reviewers say about the music; having music would warm up the place. But the juke is cool, too, and there are some great choices on it.

A lovely, clean, classic, dark bar that has stolen my heart. So happy to have Sharlene's in the neighborhood and can't wait to make it a regular part of my week.

That guy's much friendlier now - maybe he was just having a bad few weeks. The bar is still great. It's getting a little crowded, but I can't really begrudge them success - I've been telling everyone I know to go here, so it's not fair for me to complain when people start listening.

i liked this bar. It was not too crowded, nice and clean, good atmosphere. Our bartender was pleasant though a little distracted, and we had empty glasses for a while before we could get her attention on a few occasions (despite sitting at the bar, right in front of the beer taps). All in all a nice way to pass a few hours.

Dark and somewhat dingy, Sharlene's is an excellent place to hide from the world and drink your Sunday away. Or your Saturday. Or a Tuesday afternoon. And once you're sufficiently snockered, you can play pinball. Or some board games. Or you can just play some songs on the jukebox and yell incoherently at the other patrons for not giving your selections the attention they deserve. I don't know if I've done all of that here, but I think I have. And I recently woke up with a review draft for Sharlene's and the only note I made was, "Puta madre." So there's that.

3.5 stars This place has a cool vibe. Definitely a dive bar feel with dive bar music. This is my second time here and my experience was exactly the same as the first time. Maybe a little better. The bartenders are attentive and make the drinks pretty standard. I opted for a glass of Pinot noir for $6 and got a dark and stormy for $7. The drinks had me slightly buzzed which is what I was looking for. My girls and I are always able to get three seats and always manage to attract the attention of super drunk white boys lol, which is okay. Nothing particularly blew me away about this place but my friends and I keep coming back here when we're in the area so they must be doing something right. Come here to throw back a few beers and chill out with your buddies. This is the perfect spot for that.

A great beer list, very chill vibe, and reasonable prices. There's little more that I can ask for, and it's close to the park and the subway, so it's very convenient for gathering.

I'd never make Sharlene's the destination for a night, but it's an okay spot for meeting people or killing some time. SUPER loud on Fridays and Saturdays starting during happy hour. It's also especially dark in here. Like, "I can't see my own hands" dark... but not romantic at all. The crowd is generally 30-40. Mixed drinks run $6-7.

So Sharlene's took over a spot that was once an old Irish bar. They kept the retro-chic sign out front and the interior decor screams vintage dive (wood everywhere). They have a decent beer selection as well as a handful of cocktails. Their Moscow Mule was surprisingly well made, and in a generous glass. Cheap too. Nice place for a semi-tame, no-frills afternoon drink. They have happy hour on Saturdays too, which is nice.

Want a cool laid back neighborhood bar on Flatbush. Well my good friend this is it. I dropped in here after work for a quick drink. One drink turned into two and then into three . The bartender was super cool and laid back and made my drink exactly to my liking as requested and he had a pretty damn cool accent also. It is dive bar but I love a good dive bar. The prices are extremely reasonable and they are open pretty late as well. I have heard they have awesome food but I have yet to try it. But don't worry your pretty little head because once I try their food I will be update this review.

So much love for Sharlene's. Their cheap drinks, no frills attitude, and enormous space make this one of the better options in this weird stretch of the Park Slope/Prospect Heights border. Great dark and stormy's too! Best part? you can almost always find a seat.

tl; dr version - great, large dive bar, underpriced, heavy-pour drinks, a friendly, accommodating bartender, and a relaxed vibe. A+ I've heard about this place for years and finally made it there a couple of times in the past 6 months. My second time, I went with an old friend, who I don't see often, but we always have a great, relaxing time together with a lot of storytelling and lots of laughs. We had a great time at Sharlene's - I can't remember the bartender's name but she was very friendly and chill and didn't blink an eye when I asked for her to make my drink in a very specific way. Both our drinks were heavy pours and cheap for top-shelf liquor in NYC. My friend and I ended up chatting with the person next to us and the three of us had a great, old time (and, in fact, the 2 of them split a cab back to Manhattan). It may be too premature to express my love for Sharlene's here but, if I lived in the neighborhood, I would be here every week, based on my first 2 experiences. As it is, I hope I can twist some friends' arms to head over there because I think I've found a new hang.

My fave dive bar, especially when I get off late at night and just want a beer and to chill out. Don't let the dimness fool you! I think for them to get 5 stars, I'd have to have some delicious food. I must admit I'm a bit skeptical to try the food but the beer and bar vibe are classic.

Sharlene's is a large, relaxed, clean old man bar with hipsters quietly catching up and simple drinks. It also has one of the best jukeboxes in Brooklyn and a dirty sound to the music which is indie, but rocks in a way that makes you think "Why have I never heard this" and download it when you get home immediately. This is the bar where I got introduced to the culty power pop band Big Star (see? Rockin but kind of obscure) and a song by The English Beat. There's plenty of rock and punk music to choose from on the jukebox, plus I like to play the Lemonheads or Pavement but they are never quite loud enough. As for the Asian bartender, he was pretty rude at first, but when someone knocked over my Jameson he gave me another one free.

I first was introduced to this awesome bar on a date and I was hooked on the vibe of this place since so I've come back often with friends. I love the friendly bartenders, the laid back atmosphere, the music and how it's one of those places where you'll lose track of time! While it's a big bar, it never feels crowded even on a very busy night or loud either. A great bar to hang out with friends when you find yourself in the neighborhood! They do serve a limited menu here, all being snack stuff, such as soft pretzel and bier cheese (served on Ritz crackers) Located right next to the 7th Ave (B/Q) station, it's easy to get to and stumble home afterwards.

Shuhei put the bottle of Mezcal back in the row of bottles. He wasn't going to give me what I wanted. Not this time. Not without tribute. I removed my sword from it's sheath just as his arms came over his head with his own. We locked swords over the bar; Samurai and Ronin, eyes locked in a steely glare. With one twisting motion he sliced open my side. I was done for. Skippy quickly pushed my insides back into the gaping wound and glued the wound shut. I was then able to sit and enjoy my cocktail. They also have pies!

I have lived and worked in Prospect Heights for years and often frequented the former Irish pub of Mooney's, and I have spent limited time at Sharlene's. Until my last experience for the Friday after work drink. Things were fine with daytime bartender who took off at like 7p. The next shift gave me my bill. After signing and tipping, I thought better of it and inquired after the itemized charges. I was told that my party's drinks were as follows: 2-$8, 1-$5, 1-$10, and 1-$6 and that added to a grand total of $39 pre-tax of 8.875%.. When I informed the bartender that did not add to $39, BUT to $37, and that I was just pointing it out so that next time they are more careful (he already had a paid receipt that included a tip AND WAS NOT requesting a refund) he then told me that the computer adds it up, that my math was wrong and it was just how it was. Sharlene's owner I hope you read this! Your worker's attitude sucked, he was a dismissive jerk, and refused to actually consider that he made a mathematical error. Or maybe treating your repeat customers like crap is business as usual. I have lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years, I have friends who refused to patronize your establishment, and now you have another. And given that I took my staff to your bar to celebrate an event a month before this incident, another one of your bartenders encouraged my 300+ person firm to become regulars. I THINK NOT! You have definitely lost a patron. Horrible service, the only benefit you have is that it is next to the Subway and cheap.

Money's would be proud of the dive bar with a small hint of hipster love- good deal and they take credit card- a good place after a mets game too- and always fun for Jewish holidays unlike most Christian themed holiday bars- they even have a Purim party

I try not to write bad reviews, but I figure if something is this bad, someone should speak up. Sharlene's took over Mooney's, a great Brooklyn institution, and a true Irish Pub quite a few years ago, but unfortunately, only the facade remains. There is nothing New York, Brooklyn, or even Irish about this place. A surly bartender with a keen eye for the pour and rough demeanor is what you expect when you walk in, but what you get at this wanna-be pub is just bad attitudes, bad music, bad bartenders, and an even worse owner. This place is either for tourists or for hateful and hurt people who NEVER want conversation or typical barroom stimulation, but rather would prefer to weep into their watery beers and think about how they've wasted their lives. After soberly visiting this scab of a bar and having a brief conversation with Sharlene herself, I left and seriously considered blowing my brains out just for knowing that such a person existed upon this earth, but I wrote a Yelp review instead.

Very nice bar with good prices. I went for draft special off $4 on Saturday afternoon. Nice bar tender and pet friendly. They have food but I did not try. They also allow outside food and there is a decent wing place next door. Overall great location and prices and nice service. Will return.

Charlene's is a classic, unpretentious bar where everyone can feel comfortable. The bar itself is a long wooden beauty. You don't go there for fancy mixed drinks. You want basic cocktails, delicious draft beer, and shots as needed. Bar tender Andy was superb - attentive, friendly and generous. A word about the food. We arrived rather late to a friend's informal engagement reception (need I say informal - we were at Charlene's!). We planned on drinking, but needed to eat. Bar tender Andy said the pot pies were good, but we should feel free to order take out and eat at the bar. He had local menus available. We went with the pies, provided by a local purveyor. Andy heated them to perfection. And just to reinforce the point about great service, he said to let him know if they were still cold in the middle. The pies were hot and delicious. Other regular patons were surprised the place had food.

This bar kicks ass. I'll tell you why: 1. It's got a great loooooooong bar. Who doesn't like a long bar? It greatly increases your chances of getting a seat at the bar. If you don't appreciate that, you should be at home or in a restaurant, sitting at a table. 2. It's a few steps from the subway station. Rough day? Got canned? Got promoted? Sharlene's is right there to greet you, no matter the reason. 3. Feel. It feels classic. Lots of wood, some mirrors (I think), and no TVs (and I like TVs!)... This place feels old school. 4. The jukebox. I'm not going to go into details here- everyone's got their own tastes, especially when it comes to music... But this jukebox has something for everyone. 5. Sharlene! Very nice and attentive when she's working. (A previous reviewer mentioned something about a moody, slow Asian guy... Well, he was right about that.)

Terrible bartender. Started hanging out here a few nights ago but Thursday was horrible. The bartender was openly hostile to people sitting at the bar, she seemed like she had some issues, reflecting her emotional baggage to some kindly locals who've been in the neighborhood a long time. I would not post a review like this if it wasn't really noticeable, or if they were rude, being offensive or hitting on her, if that was the case she would be justified. I was talking myself out of writing this, cause I don't want to call anybody out but she clearly needs some training or courses in hospitality.

Solid "dive"-ish bar. Great cocktails ands event beer selection. Good place to host a birthday party. Try the adult chocolate egg cream or Moscow mule. Strong drinks, reliable bartenders. Great location, never had the food. Juke box, arcade games and board games are the topping to this versatile bar sundae. :)

I really wish Sharlene's was my neighborhood bar. It checks off every category you'd want in a bar that you go to regularly: (i) dimly lit by candle light thus creating a cool atmosphere, (ii) amazing music (funk and jazz playing when I was there last night), (iii) friendly bartenders, (iv) jukebox and pinball machines (a bonus), (v) a long bar with plenty of seating, (vi) a very chill crowd, and even (vii) a WiFi connection (for those you just can't be without their interweb fix). I stumbled upon Sharlene's yesterday after a business meeting in Park Slope because I needed to find someplace to do my fantasy football draft (yes, it's very important). I walked around the neighborhood for quite some time looking for a coffee shop that was open after 9pm and had WiFi. It was surprisingly difficult to do. However, I pulled out an app I use that locates free WiFi service in the area and it directed me to Sharlene's. It was exactly what I wanted and needed! In case you were wondering my draft went well and I had a great time having a few brews at one of the coolest neighborhood bars in Brooklyn.

Before I start I will say that she did eventually let me use their washroom. New York is not know for letting people use the washroom for emergency purposes. But, I figured after offering to buy something to use the bathroom and speaking to a woman kindly she might be nice/understanding-wrong.. She treated me like I was a crack head trying to use drugs in a bathroom..wow, She explained they were cleaning the woman's and closed(sign on door says open and a guy had just sat down to eat) in which I replied I can use the men's and I repeat "I'll give you five dollars." she never looks at me runs to back while angry and says go on.. She did eventually let me go(and the porter cleaning was nice to me) so that is the two stars - but wow... after leaving money - no thanks. - nothing nice... just a "Humph" and texting on phone... If I didn't have to use the bathroom-so bad.. I would have handled her in a different way but two wrongs don't make a right.. I just think of other people having to experience what I did and so decided to write this... I worked in service industry for 6 years and "get it" but wow.. . I do think race played a factor in this even though I hate to use that card. She was white- I was black in a brooklyn neighborhood gentrified... this is what I guess "she" has to "deal" with... gentrification of black neighborhoods - this attitude is the worst part of it... Place was dive and so was the Girl behind the bar. She looked every part the character of bar. Would have gone back for drinks - but nope.

Great bar. Lots of dark wood, no TVs (though there is a screen that gets pulled down from the far corner for special events such as the Olympics). The drinks are really nicely priced and served with warmth from the friendly staff. If you want a nice spot to go with friends for drinks and a bit of conversation I highly recommend it. Music has always been pleasurable as well the 5 or 6 times I've been there over the years.

This place is great! It's got the dive bar feel without the dive bar grossness. Good drinks, fun board games and a great staff. If your looking for a place just to get a drink and catch up with a friend this is the place to go. Also-- the alcoholic chocolate egg cream is amazing.

Great bar, which is on the dive end of the bar spectrum but not too far into the deep end. Mellow, dark ambiance, usually plenty of room at the bar and tables, pinball, boardgames, and a great jukebox. Add some drink specials and generally pleasant/attentive staff= totally solid neighborhood joint.

On the plus side, doesn't seem like it gets overcrowded and they have a stack of games to use at your disposal. Never thought I'd be playing (and losing at) Trivial Pursuit at a bar, but there I was answering question after question incorrectly. Now onto the cons. The beer selection is small and the bartenders seemed to not want to be there and were quite unfriendly. I ordered an IPA and it tasted like a flat Bud Light. Also, the place was very dark - but hey, maybe you're into that!

  • Mitch E.

Any bar with board games and an above average drink selection is a winner in my eyes. The bartenders are very friendly here and it's easy to get to by public transportation, just hop on the Q. They have a huge television in the back which they only bring out for a big event. They have an old school jukebox which is awesome. Not too far from Grand Army Plaza. Sharlene's is a classic neighborhood bar which always seems to draw me in when I'm walking by.

How is this 4 or 5 stars? They have board games meant for 12 year olds that I can't even figure out. Balderdash is too complicated. Cheap drinks but you are getting what you pay for. Wine is pure swill. No one was in here on a Saturday and it gives off the feeling of my grandpas moldy basement. Or my parents basement bar actually before they had it cleaned out for mold. Good music selection however. Came in here after brunch and perusing the Spirit Halloween store that just opened across the street. They had oktoberfest and my friend said to chug so we could leave.

Much nicer inside than it looks from the outside. My interest had been piqued for months by what looked like amazing happy hour specials and highly entertaining chalkboard adverts, but I had (wrongly) been assuming this place was a slightly sketchy dive bar. Finally went in on a Saturday night, late, and was happy to discover a lively but not overly crowded bar with very friendly bartender, good music and a great vibe. Seemed to be a fair mix of regulars and people who stumbled in off Flatbush. The board games and drink specials are an awesome bonus. I will definitely be back.

Avoid this place Friday nights at all cost. Mainly because of one reason - the self-hating Asian bartender with a sour attitude will make your night miserable by doing one of the following: slow as molasses service, carding patrons over 30 years old, forgetting simple orders and just overall maximum grumpiness. Hello? You're in a service industry. If you're that miserable behind the bar, find another job.

  • David F.

Met a friend here for drinks. Nice neighborhood bar! Not a huge beer selection, but there's something on the list for everyone. It was a little louder than I had hoped, but just as dark as I had hoped. Nothing magical here, but not much to complain about either. One thing of note, on a hot summer day the AC was blasting (as it should be), but so much that I found myself compelled to grab a light sweater from my house. No biggie.

Good bar. Good Juke box. Crowd seems pretty cool. Very diverse. But a little "cliquey". Beers are a good deal for happy hour. Couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I had Mr. Wonderful also as my bartender. (mentioned in another review for this spot) I was drinking for at least 2 or 3 hours, having a good time with my buddy. Being my normal, cordial self. Not over the top, and not too cool. We weren't being loud, and just mixing up some good tunes on the diverse track jukebox. Tipping normal prices per each round. When I asked for a short beer instead of a pint, I was rudely steered toward the $3 pint. I kind of KNOW WHAT I WANT, and I really don't like asking twice. Also.....I don't know... Maybe I expect too much? But if I'm hanging out for a couple of hours, the bartender usually gives me at least ONE drink on the house. It's just good for business. However, unfortunately that didn't happen. (even though that wouldn't sway my review) Even with all that stuff being really just an annoyance, this place still rates a solid 3 stars. Decent free food of pigs in a blanket, etc. under sterno heaters. Unfortunately sometimes business' give off a feeling that they don't want you to return. Sometimes they get their wish.

I have determined, based upon observation, that my favorite neighborhood-type bars all have three traits in common: Straightforward interior (in other words, the place looks like a bar) Plenty of space Jukebox Sharlene's has all three, and I've never had a problem with any of the bartenders. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences here.

I didn't get a chance to drink here. If you know me then you know that I'm done drinking by the time we reach bar #2. Which is the reason I don't bar hop. I did thoroughly enjoy the pinball machine games! I wasn't a fan of the Addams Family one but the Elvira one I liked because you get free additional balls after a certain score. I had fun for the few moments that we were there. Would definitely love to come back.

Exactly what you want in a Brooklyn dive bar! Slightly overcrowded and slightly watered down drinks, but a big space to hang with friends and people watch. I'm easy to please for my dive bars, what can I say...

As the weather turns cold, my thoughts turn to warm. Warm cocktails. Mulled wine, hot apple cider (rum/whiskey), Tom & Jerry's, Egg Nog...you name it...I drink them all. Sharlenes...ahhhh, has the plug-in tea kettle right at the bar, cloves, cinnamon sticks and honey. Heat up water, chat with bartender, all a wallop of Jameson and I'm on my warm and merry way.
