Fantastic bbq! The food is always great it's messy and sticky the way bbq should be. My family loved this place the staff is always courteous we will gladly be going back in the bear future!

I was anticipating this visit quite a lot, as the Pig Out BBQ in Schenectady on Upper Union was the former second location of Rubbin Butts before the current owners bought it out and changed the name. The "original" Rubbin Butts thus got a "it's not as good as Rubbin Butts" talk when I brought it up with locals who've been here longer. So the first thing is: the menus are virtually identical (still). I mean, right down to the font on the menu and the pricing. (Exception: Rubbin Butts has turkey legs). So it's not surprising that I had a great deal of difficulty telling the two places apart: both have Carolina, Texas, and Memphis -style barbecue sauces. The sides seem identically-prepared, although the greens here left a little something to be desired. So the question is: is Rubbin Butts staying more true to the "real" BBQ flavor and smoking and so forth? Not as far as I can tell. It was pretty much the same, except the inside here is much more elemental and a bit crowded, but it has a restroom, which Pig Out does not. There is also an outside order window and picnic tables, which is a plus, and they serve ice cream, although it's standard ice cream truck commercial-processed 'novelty' products out of the freezer, so nothing special. So, bottom line: it's perfectly adequate BBQ, they have nice sides and I like the choice of sauces, the quality of the meats is nothing special, and the ambiance is very basic - which means go if you're in the area and have a jones for faux BBQ, but it's not really worth a special trip.

Came here last month on my first visit to the area. My taste buds were singing when I bit into the brisket and pulled pork. This place can turn a vegan into a believer again!!!! Rubbin Butts BBQ, I will see you again soon. Only next time... I will eat more!

Went back in recently. Food- 3 Stars Got a pulled pork plate.Still good but no smoke flavor. It appeared to be actually smoked (there was bark in it), but I couldn't taste any smoke at all. Coleslaw was fine, Corn muffin was overly sweet maybe store bought. Service- 4 Stars Super nice lady.

  • Clare M.

Highly recommend the cole slaw. The pulled pork with Carolina bbq sauce was good and had a nice bite. Portions are fairly generous. My dining companion had the bbq chicken plate and the side of sweet potatoes - enjoyed both. The man who waited on us was very nice. I would go again.

The name Rubbin' Butts invokes thoughts of Beavis and Butt-Head laughing uncontrollably, and indeed, when I think of the name, I too laugh like the teenage boy I once was. There used to be a Rubbin' Butts location back in Schenectady, which later was renamed a less amusing name of Pig Out BBQ. While I was out around Cobleskill maintaining the property my family has in the area, I wanted to pick up dinner and the Rubbin' Butts name stuck out to me. But make no joke, Rubbin' Butts serves good, tasty BBQ for both immature and mature minded individuals. The restaurant is conveniently located on the main street in Cobleskill, but it is tucked away right near the railroad crossing across the street from the Price Chopper supermarket, so it may be easy enough to miss. I arrived close enough to closing time for the night, so the staff was ready to close the dining room (but I could eat outside if I wanted) and was at the point where they were not making new food, only serving what was still available. While the menu itself offers beef and pork styles of BBQ, I decided to order a pulled pork BBQ sandwich, which they still had available, along with a side of coleslaw. It was indeed as tasty as I had imagined it to be. I'll be back, hopefully when they have more menu options to select from.

Oh well. If you're in Cobleskill, NY perhaps it might be better to go to the supermarket across the road and buy some fixins to make a sandwich. While pleasant enough staff, the food's not great and neither is the seating area inside. AND they don't have beer! Ribs without beer? Oh well.

Good - very good - Carolina-style pork, done the right way. Who cares about atmosphere? Glad to stop in here and chat with the owner on a very snowy morning after Christmas. Will look forward to making my way back to try the brisket.

Open Daily 11 am to 10 pm offering pulled pork and beef Texas and Carolina BBQ foods, country style combo plates, ssides, desserts, and beverages. Also catering services. So happy we stumbled on this place! The owner was a really nice guy, offered suggestions on what to try, and gave us an extra side of Salt Potatos. They were great. We had the 1/2 bbq chicken, pulled pork, with coleslaw sandwich, mac and cheese, corn bread, sweet potatos and bread pudding! Stuffed afterwards, but so worth it. I'd come here every week if I lived in the area.

By all means, this is no four seasons with their 1980's table settings and their cafeteria atmosphere, but the food is good. The pulled pork was Austin's favorite but the brisket was a little fatty. The extra sauce on the table was clutch, but i cant find myself giving this restaurant more than three stars; who presents their food on paper plates and trays

  • Kyle B.

What can I say? I guess I can start with what was good. The pulled pork was really OK, the coleslaw was also OK... But I am afriad that's where it all ends. Since I am long past puberty, the "babe" behind the counter is meaningless to me, especially after I purchased 3 sodas I asked for a small glass of water to take some medication, and was told, "we have no water." Duh! Now to the ribs. Don't walk from this place, RUN! as fast as you can, they were the most tastless, dry, disgusting excuse for ribs I have EVER eaten. They were terrible! I was barely able to eat one before I pushed the plate away in disgust. If this is suppose to be a place that "specializes" in "barbeque" then you think that the "barbeque" ribs would be edible.

I'm a sucker for BBQ, so I quickly turned into the lot when I saw this as an alternative to the usual chain lunch options that surround it in this little upstate NY town. I'm glad I did - the Carolina Style Pulled Pork (vinegar sauce) did not disappoint. It was extremely flavorful and was fantastic on it's own even before I dipped some bites in the hot sauce at the table. The hot sauce on it's own was also amazing and made on site. The only detractions, if any really, would be the cornbread muffin that was more of a cake-y sweet cupcake. I tend to prefer the a drier less sweet cornbread. Also, the menu-proclaimed "world's best Cole slaw" didn't blow me away, perhaps a victim of over-selling. It was a bit thicker with a heavier mayo-based sauce than I prefer. Please note, these distractions are very minor and in no way detract from the pork - which is the absolute star of the show (as it should be). I'd go back for sure, and I recommend it to anybody like me who finds themselves passing through with a grumbling stomach.

this is probably my favorite place to eat in all of upstate new york. the blonde woman who takes orders is a total babe and she gave me a snapple for free once when my evil parents refused to buy it for me. that pretty much cemented rubbin butts as my favorite cobleskill establishment. the brisket is my favorite of the meats, and all the sides are great, but the macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and cole slaw would be my top three choices. you really can't go wrong here with whatever you order, although i do recommend taking your food to go cause the dining area inside is a bit depressing and the outside sitting area can get buggy i do wish they would start stocking more "rubbin butts" t-shirts, because i want one and they're always sold out. come on rubbin butts! i want to rep you all around the world, help me help you ...`. UPDATE - i finally got shirt and it's great. i only wish the next generation of shirts were more along the lines of "i got my butt rubbed" and then had a pig smoking a cigar or smoking and the back could say cobleskill is 4 lovers but that's just a suggestion. also i'm pretty into the pulled pork these days. it's equally delicious as the brisket!

My boyfriend and I traveled through Cobleskill while we were staying upstate and wow I'm glad we checked this place out! It was the only place we could find with a kitchen that stayed open late so we got takeout. I got the Texas pulled pork and my bf got the brisket. The meat was so flavorful and tender. And they give you TONS of it. The sides we had weren't as good as the meat but they did the job. We got corn muffins and sweet potatoes and potato salad. I'm pretty picky about BBQ and this place was awesome!

  • Felicia K.

Really like this place. I'm not a big meat eater, so I usually end up with the chicken breast platter - the owner has indeed made fun of me for doing so in the past. The sides here are amazing... coleslaw, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, corn bread, etc. I've had most of them by now and loved all of them. Once he gave us a bit of their peach cobbler to munch on while we were waiting, and it was simply delectable. I prefer sitting outside if it's pleasant, but they've now added a dining room, which lacks somewhat in atmosphere but is a nice alternative to sitting outside if it's raining. The owner is generally in a happy and conversational mood, although I've also seen him be a bit quiet and withdrawn... I guess it's hard to maintain that good mood after a long day at work. He seems to remember regular customers' orders. Definitely worth a stop here, especially when your nearby alternatives include Arby's and Pizza Hut.

This is the second time I've ordered takeout here. The first time was not good either, but I was hoping that they were just having an off night and after a over a year and Rubbin Buttts is still open, we decided to try again. I ordered a brisket plate and my husband a half rack of ribs. My brisket was very dry, almost to the point it was inedible. I ordered potato salad, which was also not good. The potatoes were not fully cooked, and I'm not a big fan of crunchy potatoes. My husband got the ribs and cole slaw. The ribs were not fresh. They actually had a flavor similar to Chinese Buffet ribs where you can tell they've been reheated, likely in the microwave. The slaw was runny and flavorless. We also got the corn bread muffins, which was the only thing we liked the last time we ate there. This time they were also a let down. Hard and dried out. Very disappointing. Cost wise it's in the middle. I think it's funny that Dinosaur BBQ has 100 times the quality and these guys charge more for the garbage they serve. We will definitely not be dining there again! In fact, we're talking about opening a barbecue restaurant next door to them called Better BBQ because we definitely make better barbecue during our weekend cookouts. Would probably skip this place and go down the street to McDonald's and get a McRib. At least that's not dried out and microwaved.

Food was good and large portions, would return. The dinning room was lacking character though, kinda like a small school lunch room. Owner was great and very friendly.

I am so glad that we found this place in Cobleskill when we were in the area visiting Howe Caverns! I could not have asked for a better dinner. The restaurant has outdoor picnic areas for the nicer weather, and a dining room for other times of year. Prices were reasonable for what you got. My boyfriend and I couldn't decide on just one thing, so we ordered 2 combo meals and shared everything. The pulled pork was excellent, it had a great bbq sauce on it and was very tender. The ribs were probably some of the best I have ever had. I am not usually a huge rib eater, but I probably could have eaten close to a full rack on my own. Our sides of the corn muffins, mac and cheese and salt potatoes were also very good. I'm not sure if the man behind the counter was the owner or not, but he was very nice and personable. We had a really great experience and would love to come back when passing through the area sometime.

OMG the worst food ever! I don't know what the people here have ever known abt bbq but this place was definitely not a good place for that. The pulled pork was like mush and I way too vinegar-y. The so called world famous coslaw wasnt good either. I can't tell you how discusted I was with the food there. Very disappointed and I blame Yelp for not warning me!

If you like slow cooked BBQ pulled pork with great sides or brisket you will not be disappointed. Simple straight forward great BBQ.

  • John W.

I had the combo half rack and pulled pork platter. Baby backs were tender, juicy and with the right amount of fat. Smoke ring was almost 1/4 inch thick, so you know this is the real deal. Pulled pork Texas style with barbecue sauce excellent as well. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich with vinegar mop and cole slaw right on top. I thought that was great too since I'm not a big fan of sauceless pork. Definitely some of best barbecue in northeast. Owner is from Carolinas and learned everything from her dad. Very friendly. The place had plenty of locals coming in and out (lots of take-out) which is always a good sign. The place is a bit small (only about 5 or 6 tables inside) plus you order and pick up food from the counter, so don't expect to be waited on. But you'll look past all of that once you bite into the pork.

  • Colleen M.

Excellent: -The brisket, oh my God the brisket. It is heavenly. On my third or fourth trip here the owner asked why I never got the brisket, and I told him I didn't like BBQ brisket, it is always too dry. Well I walked out with a free brisket platter and I have never ordered anything else from him since! It was juicy and tender and amazing! -The pulled pork, whether the Carolina or the Texas, is great. HUGE portion on the sandwich, you can't possibly eat it all. -The corn muffins! I don't like cornbread but these muffins are moist and slightly dense which is great for me! Good -The coleslaw is cut a little big for me, so its very crunchy which just isn't my thing, but the flaw was good. -The pies and cobblers are great, I have had them all because when they first opened, hubby and I went there very frequently and the owner always gave us free desserts. -The potato salad, hubby liked it I was ok with it. The So-So to the not so great. -Ribs and chicken are dry. If you want great chicken, travel another 45 minutes down route 7 to Brook's in Oneonta. -The sweet potatoes are canned. The service is always excellent, the dining room is small and cramped, and poorly decorated, but the patio outside is excellent. I usually just get take out anyway though. this is definitely the best BBQ is Cobleskill. *They are closed on Mondays! This is because they opened a new restaurant on Union street in Albany/Schenectady.

  • Rita R.

It was edible but far from delicious. The ribs were okay but we had to throw out the chicken. It was clearly microwaved and VERY dry and tasteless. Wish it was better but it just wasn't good.

    (1)
  • Chris J.

I was a little let down at Rubbin Butts. The pulled pork was passable (I had the Texas BBQ flavor), but the mac-n-cheese side was clearly pre-prepared and then microwaved. Plain atmosphere - not at all what I was hoping for.

We were recently traveling through the Cobleskill area and read other Yelpers' rave reviews about "Rubbin' Butts". We'd like to add ours! As others said, the food is terrific - great pulled pork, brisket, etc. The Carolina pulled pork is exceptional - I ordered it with salt potatoes for my side, and the owner (aka Boss Hog) said he was going to add on a complimentary order of cole slaw since the true way to eat this dish was with a heaping portion of slaw on top. I am pretty picky when it comes to slaw, but I didn't refuse his very nice offer and suggestion. When our orders were ready, we picked them up at the counter and were immediately impressed at how HUGE the portions were! My husband ordered the pulled pork sandwich - he's a big eater, and he felt as though his sandwich was enough for two people! My Carolina pork plate was equally large and the slaw was without a doubt, the best slaw I've had! When I took my finished tray up to the counter, the owner asked me what I thought of the slaw and the combination of flavors with the pork - I quickly told him that I loved it, and asked if it was homemade. He answered that it was his own recipe and I told him that I was really impressed. I also learned that the Carolina pulled pork recipe was also a family recipe (I believe his father's). After the conversation, I headed for the restroom before hitting the road for our long trip back to Ohio. When I returned to the dining area, the manager called me over to the counter and handed me a plastic bag containing a pint container of cole slaw, and said, "A gift for you to take home with you - enjoy!" The slaw rode in our cooler all the way home to Cincinnati, OH. We enjoyed it the next day, but were really missing the pork - wish we had "Rubbin' Butts" down here! If our travels ever take us to Cobleskill again, we will definitely be making a stop at this outstanding restaurant!

This site must remove all the "BAD" reviews. I posted something about a week ago and now it's not on their site. This place RUBBIN BUTTS is HORRIBLE!!! The only thing good about it is that it warns ya' what's going to happen to ya' after you eat their food. I should have taken the warning. Let's start by our first impression. Walked into this place and noticed the horrible eating area. The only thing good about it was the flat screen on the wall. Then my husband asked the owner if they took credit cards. His answer was "YEAH, IT'S SAYS THAT ON THE DOOR". Ummm, okay? If we saw the sign on the door, we wouldn't have asked. We then order a bunch of things including ribs and asked him how long it would be. He told us.....FOUR MINUTES. Four minutes for two orders of ribs and other stuff???? WE should have walked out, especially seeing the ribs sitting under the hot light for God knows how long. I then got up to get drinks for everyone (there was a fridge in the sitting area w/ canned sodas etc.)...to notice two dead bugs sitting on top of one of the cans. MMmmmm appetizing. We still didn't leave. Once we got the food, it was cold and dry. And just an fyi, my entire family was in the bathroom w/ the runs that night.

Crazy good!!! I have tried many BBQ places and this is my favorite. It's not all about the atmosphere though; it's the BBQ! I'm glad I don't live too close by or I would have no diet!

We stopped by after touring the caverns and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The owner was wonderful and friendly, and the ribs, pulled pork and especially the brisket was great. The chicken was not as good as the other things we tried but overall it was a wonderful meal. Get the brisket if you were only getting one thing.

Raw chicken. That should be enough but noooooo. The owner argued with my husband saying that it was cooked. When the hub showed him the bleeding and I do mean bleeding joints the SOB got pissed. Really?

  • Bitos D.

I didn't like it at all. I'll say in their favor that we went at 9pm on a Thursday night. Maybe that's why the only thing acceptable was the corn muffin, but the french fries, baked beans, mac&cheese and baby ribs..: thumbs down. Also, it's more like a take out place, bad quality plastic silverware, unknown material for plates and cold atmosphere...

  • Aclaire H.

Went here 10 minutes b4 closing and was glad they took our order. Maybe I was hungry, but the ribs that I took back to the hotel was delicious, fall off the bone. It's near Howe Caverns. :)

I was in the area and came here based on recommendations. Pretty good BBQ, good sized portions. Atmosphere leaves something to be desired, but people aren't coming here for personal service/fine dining. They probably could make it a little nicer in the dining room (i.e. less school cafeteria-like).

If you are visiting Howe Caverns or just passing through Cobleskill, you have to eat here! Food is fantastic, portions are huge, and the guy behind the counter is hilarious. The pulled pork sandwich is sooo good! Melts in your mouth tender. Better bring your appetite, the sanwich was about 5 inches tall. Ribs are good. A little sweet but you'll be licking your fingers clean. Mac and cheese is good and creamy. Cornbread muffins are freaking awesome! I definitely recommend this place. If you visit Howe Caverns, don't go one the fast foods joints in Cobleskill. Go to Rubbin Butts Bar-B-Q!!!

First I'll say I don't eat meat. I wasn't going to get anything but the owner was petty cool and told me to get the mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. The mac and cheese was very good, the sweet potatoes were okay for what there were but a little sweet for me. he bread pudding was awesome! The salt potatoes were just OK, nothing special. My family had some of the pork sandwiches and BBQ chicken and said it was the best meal they had all weekend. So I think we picked the best place to go in this small time.

  • Janine B.

Found this place on Yelp and stopped in for a brisket sandwich. It was delicious! Would you like some PLASTIC to go with your sides? BEWARE - a major problem with this place, and a serious one, is that they heat up the sides in these clear, thin, plastic containers in a microwave and then serve it to you in them. We were grossed out and I couldn't help but think about the melted plastic in my baked beans and in my husband's cheese grits that was going to make us sick, or worse, cause cancer. We poked around the dish trying to eat whatever part didn't touch the melting plastic, which wasn't much. We shared a peach cobbler for dessert, also served heated up in a plastic container! Don't they know better?! No one microwaves plastic! Not only a health hazard, but what kind of authentic BBQ joint serves microwaved food? A major turn-off that we won't be back. They also serve food on STYROFOAM plates. Earth-unfriendly to boot.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
