Like other reviewers I too had bones in my meal. I got the enchiladas combo which comes with 2 enchiladas (your choice of meat), beans and rice. They forgot I was dining in and packed my food to go. I still ate it from the container, it was good for the price. Not a stand out dish but it did fill me up. However the bones did throw me off.

Obscenely large portions for amazing value! This place is original. No technology, no gimmicks no style. It's a place that makes and serves good food. I had a vegetarian burrito covered in a mountain of fresh salad and enough rice and beans to feed a family of four. Everything was fresh and delicious. When I saw how big the serving was I gasped and the server asked if I wanted to cancel my order of platanos maduros. (I didn't, and I'm glad I didn't those were delicious too!)

i happen to like their stews. i really love the oxtail but when they don't have that, i will opt for a beef stew, chicken stew, or baked chicken. rice & beans or plataños. i've dined in once - kind of a complete dump inside but you won't find any other place like this in chinatown. and really, in chinatown!!! sure, you could walk 20-30 minutes to sophie's but the portions are so much bigger. it's a little bit of a neighborhood secret. you may want to just order food to go if you're a germaphobe. that bad, yeh.

The Greatest!!! Just had chicken breast with rice and beans, Very friendly like you are at their home! If you like Spanish food this is the Best!

Best authentic Latin food I have ever had. Probably the only restaurant like it in the area as well. I highly recommend their steak sandwich!

Great place for good food I love the steak and rice or steak sandwich. Great Latin food I've been going here for over 25 years

Dominican restaurants always provide large portions. This place is no different. You get a huge dish of rice, beans and your choice of protein. Tried the beef stew, baked chicken and pernil and they're all great. The baked chicken was so tender and flavorful. Hot sauce hits the spot. I always ask for gravy on the rice too. Nice affordable find in Tribeca.

The house made hot sauce was what made me stop. It's a delicious slow burn. I got the chicken and fried onions and enjoyed eating while I listened to the antics of the employees and customers at the bar.

This place is fantastic. I've eaten lunch on numerous occasions here; the portions are incredible and the good is delicious. The roast pork with yellow rice and black beans is such a good, fortifying meal, I find it difficult to try anything else. Today though, I had the stewed chicken and it was delicious. Oh, it's dirt cheap and the people are so friendly. A great NYC gem!

Nothing fancy, just good straightforward "Spanish" food at a great value. That's increasingly rare in Manhattan these days. Whether is breakfast, lunch or dinner, Westside has you covered.

This place is simply GREAT! There's a VERY warm friendly atmosphere the people who work there are kind and sweet and serve you with love. It looks very plain when you walk in but there is nothing plain about the food. Its delicious. Best Cubano Sandwich in NYC! On Fridays they have a seafood soup that's dynamite! Very inexpensive especially for the area and anything you order is tasty and satisfying! You cannot go wrong at this place :)

I came in for some chicken soup since I wasn't feeling well. Nice people here then again I wasn't the one placing the order. My coworker, who frequents this place, put in our orders. You get free bread with the soup so I asked for another ration of bread. I like that. The soup was really good. A few noodles, I think there were dumplings, some potatoes and carrots. Very flavorful and a really great portion for $4. Seating inside is limited. A few tables, one counter top. I think their soup is definitely going to be a staple for the next few weeks.

There was a ton of gristle - and some bones - in my chicken burrito. It's cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for. They do accept cards - no minimum.

My daughter and I stumbled across this place while on a "el cheapo" shopping trip on Canal St. a few weeks ago. It was 10AM and most of the chinese joints were not open yet... and we had to eat. While I know that this place's specialty is beef stew, beans, rice... etc. I had to have a burger, and this was one of the best burgers I've ever had... No shit. It was that good. I don't know what sort of spicing was in it but it was perfection, as was the totally fresh lettuce, tomatoes and pickle that came with it... all for $4.50.... Unbelievable.

You Would never suspect how great this place is from the outside. A Couple of years ago I happened to walk by and decided to go in for some café con Leché. Since then I have become a devoted patron. The Rice and Beans are by far the best I have ever had. The Monfungo is out of this world as well as the Arroz con Pollo, The Service is exceptional. It's a Homey place where all feel welcome.

The BEST Huevos Rancheros ANY Where. I've been eating the huevos rancheros here since the Late 80's when they were located 2 blocks away across Canal St. & they have Not Changed in 30 + years, Still the Best & I have tried huevos rancheros all over the country & outside it as well. I come into the City (from Jersey) Just for this & an Espresso. The combination of Tortilla covered in Black Beans & 2 Sunnyside up Eggs Topped with Muenster Cheese & Perfectly Scorched under the Broiler, with a side order of Yellow Rice & Toast (included) Is the BEST Anywhere Ever. Oh & if you can Handle it you have to Swipe the Top with their Warm (Temp) House Hot Sauce But be Warned You can Over do it Real Fast. I've had many other Items on their Menu over the Years & All are Very Good . . . But The Huevos Rancheros is one of those "What would your Last Meal be ?" Kind of Dishes. Eat this @ 9am & your good 'til Dinner, for under $10 bucks

I hardy get Dominican-Caribbean food but I do like to eat when I am craving for something heavy. It's too sad to see less and less of those restaurants and Spanish family sitting on their stoops and just hang around, especially in Summer. I always thought that's very New York. Monday special, Beef Oxtail Stew ($11), got my attention. I chose tasty=salty black beans and a flavorful rice with it. The rice had a vivid yellow color. It has been my downfall asking to a waiter what to have but turned out, it was a good thing this tinge. Nice lady behind the counter responded well with my request, Roast Pork on the side. She didn't charge for it and gave me a wink. If I am walking on Canal St. heading to Chinatown, I will definitely drop by and try other things like Café con leche or if I want quick but filling breakfast, instead of Dim Sum, I get Mangu or if I am super hungry, I sit down with my friend and share Huevos Rancheros because I know the portion is going to be huge. Unfortunately this type of a true NY delight is fading every day.

Thank holy Jesus for this place. When you're footsore and famished, this is exactly what you want--a combination of "Mexican" and Dominican dishes to fill your belly with for super cheap. My sister and I had enchiladas with black beans and yellow rice, a plate of platanos maduros, and a "salad" that turned out to be nothing but ripe avocado. That's a pretty damn good salad, if you ask me. Served with a side of homemade hot sauce that actually met my sister's exacting standards of spiciness, the food was flavorful, abundant, and cheap. Our bill (with drinks) came to $15.03. Doesn't look like much from the outside. Or from the inside, either, come to think of it. But the staff was sweet, the clientele was lively, and did I mention the food was awesome? And cheap?

Have been here many times after my office moved downtown but it's been awhile and after having their roast pork burrito with rice and beans I had to leave a review because it was so GOOD and such a generous portion I had it yesterday and today for lunch. I've had their roast pork many times with rice and beans and it's always been tender with great flavor and a decent bark. It did not disappoint this time in a burrito. When available try the rice and peas. I've had their Mofongo and thought it was delicious but it was the only time I've ever eaten it anywhere. The oxtail is a winner as well. And last but not least is their homemade hot sauce. It's not only the right amount of heat but has intense pepper/chili flavor. Reasonable prices too. Service can be a little haphazard and/or slow but worth it.

I love to come here for their steak or pork burritos with rice and beans. Had the huevos rancheros for breakfast and it was great. Addicted to this place for the food and cheap prices..

Echoing the breakfast sandwich love - these things are massive. I asked for a bacon, egg, and cheese and watched the cook pull a wad if bacon out of his cooler the size of a fist and plop it right on the grill. The resulting sandwich was/is one of the best I've had in the city. A little more than outer borough prices at $4.50/ea but well worth it. Anytime I crash in the neighborhood I try to grab my breakfast here.

The food is dry like wood, if I new what wood taste like. What more can I say, extremely tasteless, do not recommend.

In the running for the greasiest burrito in New York. And for the record, that's not a compliment. Grease is good in theory. But too much kills a dish. And the food at Westside has waaaay too much. Plus the chicken burrito quickly devolved into a place of Mexican mush. The "hot sauce" they gave me was jerk style, and was pretty awful. Plus all the chicken in the burrito had bones in it, and a fair amount of gristle and fat. Ew. The only reason they get two stars is the neighborhood is pretty void of cheap dinner options. If based on food alone, this is a one star place and to be avoided whenever possible. Yuck.

One of the beat meals for under 10 bucks I've ever had. I got the roast pork with rice and beans. The rice was perfect. Light and fluffy, with a hint of saffron. The beans were simple, with onion and garlic, and couldn't have been better. The pork was roasted exactly how I like it. Think the texture of pulled pork with the lighter, less smoky flavor. Topped with a perfectly sized slab of crunchy skin. Some say it's a gut bomb. I say, don't be a pussy.

Simple neighborhood fare at more then fair prices. Life is good and yes, the breakfast sandwiches are ginormous. Yes, I wish they had a sesame bagel, but having fresh jalapeno's for my eggs makes up for the loss of sesame seeds every time.

I really wanted to love this place after reading the rave reviews but... I had the fish plate with rice and beans from the dominican menu. The fish was fried to death and had bones. I hate fish with bones in it and equally hate fish that is overcooked and dry. The yellow rice was also overcooked and mushy. The beans were decent and the hot sauce had a unique flavor to it. And I liked the pickled onions. All and all the food here is a one stop shop to obesity. Pros: The staff is friendly, the dingy diner atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming, the portions are huge.

I love Westside for 2 things: their tasty, cheap rice & beans, and their massive breakfast sandwiches. The sausage, egg and cheese sandwich comes with a sausage link sliced in half and grilled, not a round patty like most sandwiches. It'll fill you up and probably let you skip lunch. To anyone who complains about the burritos or other Mexican items - look around you when you enter Westside. What is everyone else eating? Some kind of stew, with a giant pile of rice and beans on the side. That's what you should get. This place is Dominican, not Mexican. (On a side rant, I think this is the source of the misconception that there's no good Mexican in NYC. There is, just not if you're looking for it at Dominican restaurants.) As other reviewers have mentioned, it's best to consider the rice & beans as 2 meals, rather than trying to eat them all in one sitting. Their hot sauce is quite hot, use it sparingly.

Doesn't look like much on the outside, but for the best Huevos Rancheros in the city, this is the place to go. Fried eggs over black beans and tortilla, with yellow rice and white toast on the side, plus the hottest hot sauce in town. I don't know about their other offerings, it's mostly Latin fare and it looks good, but they have perfected the humble huevos and for that alone they deserve 4 stars. The place is a bit grimy and its bathrooms are quite popular with the Canal Street street vendors, but the service is quick and the prices are just right.

Stomach Bomb. That's the name for this place at my office. In packs of 4 or 5, we go down to stomach bomb to get pork with rice and beans, cheese + cheese + cheese + bean enchiladas, 2 eggs over rice and beans. Those are our staples. You get enough food to go into a food coma. My advice: eat your food in two sittings. If you don't, your stomach will be bombed. Get it?

Every time I come to this neighborhood I give thanks that gentrification hasn't swallowed up this amazing place in TriBeCa. Years ago, when I worked in the neighborhood, I came here so often that I got phone calls at the cash register. This is as old school as it gets, complete with the outrageously loud salsa jukebox in the back. Bean burritos are stupendous, and, dare I say it...? They make the best homemade hot sauce I've ever had. Seriously, it's drinkable. And the cafe con leche is equally awesome. Add in a great crowd and sweet staff, and the dining experience is right on. Westside Diner, may you live forever!

I still love this place but their chicken stew disappointed me. I couldn't take a bite without little pieces of chicken bone :(.. I also tried their mofongo which is really good, came with avocado salad.

If you love Spanish food, this is the best bang for your buck right here. Massive portions, reasonable prices, and a friendly staff to go along with it. The pork and ox tail are both in. sane.

  • Julie K.

I like my Spanish food sloppy and unidentifiable. Seriously. I often wonder what this place looks like on the inside and hope it looks nothing like what they deliver in those glorious take-out tins...um, messy and uh, unidentifiable. I order delivery about once a week from Westside. Again, seriously. I get 2 meals out of a $11 (including tax and tip) check. TIP: order the rice and beans on the side for an extra $2 and you'll get twice as much as the order calls for, warranting yet another vegetarian friendly lunch. Seriously. Now, I consider myself a connoisseur of Mexican, having transplanted from the southwest and all, and this is no top shelf Mexican. It's not suppose to be. It's ghetto fabulous! The chicken is juicy delectible meat, (not the frozen processed from a 100lb bag) laden with bones sometimes. bones = real. All this is served in a mish mash, stuffed to the gills sized portion! You'll be in belly bloat bliss. So serious. I suggest you order: Combo #4- 1 Nacho, 1 Enchilada w/ rice & beans & salad for $8.50 Grilled Chicken with peppers and onions & rice & beans for $9.50 Pork chops w/ rice & beans for $9.75 - a perfect combo of crispy and salty. Beef Burger w/ cheese for a whopping $4.00! (larger than life real beef patty on a kaiser roll. Delic!) Update: going through Westside withdrawals. The office has unofficially been blacklisted since the deliver guy was stuck in our building elevator for an hour and a half. We're going to wait a couple months for the dust to settle and pray for bodily fluid-free food. Seriously.

Killer enchiladas. Dominican-style pork butts! Huge platters of steaming food! Simple fare, but well executed and plenty of it. Very loud, homey atmosphere. The chicken and the pork are big sellers here. Everything comes with rice and beans. I stop by here every time I have to go to Pearl Paint. The TV is always on, and they have a cash machine. It's very easy to miss this place because on the outside it looks like an ordinary coffee shop.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
