Visiting Taos on vacation, we decided to stop here based on the reviews. We had the barbacoa tacos and the beef enchiladas with red chili. The place does NOT live up to the reviews. Let's start with the positive: service was prompt and accurate, the restaurant was clean. Having said that, the food was bland. There was no spice or flavor to the enchiladas, the sauce was tomato based, cheese was barely there. Not like anything I've had in New Mexico, which is not meant to be positive. The barbacoa was well cooked but not well seasoned. The sides are strictly fillers. This was more like watered down, fast food New Mexican food. If you are looking for good New Mexican cuisine, go elsewhere.

Fair warning. They have hot peppers for anyone to take. Heed the warning that they are X-Hot. I didn't believe, but now I am a believer. Did a Yelp search for some dinner in Taos and came up with this little gem. The person that was hosting me had heard of it, but hadn't been. We figured why not. Everything was new to me in this little town and I am always game for new. The deal here is that you order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. Over by the silverware is where you will find those hot peppers. Be careful and don't say I didn't tell you. The menu is rather large and getting through it takes some effort. After looking it over I decided to get the Pork Tostadas. Within minutes of ordering I had a huge plate of food in front of me. Pork Tostadas along with rice and beans and lettuce and tomatoes. Oh my. Along with it I had Jicama juice. Never had that before. Not too sweet. Just perfect. As I said earlier I had one of the peppers. The first 2 bites were fine. The third bite was the exact opposite of that. It tastes like burning. It certainly did.

Note: There are two in the area and the one I'm reviewing is the southern location nearer the hotel area on the Paseo. Now that I'm not in town, I'm confusing myself as to which one I'm attaching my review. Meh. Don't let the cafeteria style put you off, as the food here is very, very good. The staff is helpful although a bit rushed at the ordering window. We had to catch on as to how to arm ourselves with silverware, etc. After getting over feeling like a rube, I ordered the shrimp tacos and my husband ordered the Aztec Quesadillas. His order was more than even he could eat and the left-overs were awesome to have. I held my breath, as often shrimp is tough in tacos. Here they were absolutely delish! Tender and nicely seasoned. The guac with the tortilla chips is great. We ordered a wine and a beer and our tab was a little over $40, so it's not a cheap place to eat but we didn't resent a penny of it. We sat outside and watched the traffic on the Paseo go by on a pleasant evening. Would gladly go again.

A real disappointment ! Food was bland no flavor. I cannot see what all the cars were about. Decor was pitiful. Sorry folks !

Food is really good. This is a sit down restaurant but they don't do table service. You pay at the counter and they bring it to you. They have beer, wine margaritas, and sodas. Their tacos are really good. The Azteca quesadilla is really good too. Nice outdoor seating area also.

Friendly and accommodating staff. You place your order and they serve the food. Food was very tasty and descent prices. I did think the rice and beans were a bit bland though.

Some refreshingly Mexican food that has not been too Americanized nor New-Mexicanized. And by that I mean not too bland, a little rough around the edges, and a menu where everything doesn't end up tasting alike. While they have adopted the local penchant of having red and green chili on hand to serve over anything, the true south of the border Mexican flavors survive. Their order-at-the-counter service and easy-to-dissect menu makes it easy to drop in for fresh eat-in or carry-out service. Because of this, lines can form morning and lunch for workers ordering a tasty take-out lunch. Kudos for their tray of roasted jalapeño that are served as condiments! A spicy addition to any meal.

I was psyched about this place, someone recommended it to us and I couldn't wait to give it a try. I was starving so in the mood for a large satiating burrito. The guy at the counter taking our order was friendly and helpful. The place was filling up, looked like a lot of locals. My burrito was covered in an ecru sauce. And the tortillas tasted store-bought, not what I was expecting. The chicken was bland and the pinto beans and rice fell flat. While the price was right, the taste was not.

  • Brad P.

I ordered the two beef enchilada plate with rice and beans. I chose red sauce instead of green. Unfortunately the red sauce tasted almost like Chef Boyardee spaghetti-o sauce. The refried beans and rice also had very little spice to it. Being in Taos, New Mexico, I was expecting MORE spice and flavor but I got much less.

I had high expectations for this place from all the Yelp reviews and I'm sad to say I can't give the same stamp of approval. Despite our proximity to Mexico and the fact that this state was once in fact a part of that country most New Mexicans don't do Mexican, instead opting for New Mexican. What's the difference? Mostly just the red and green chile we use on everything. Actually, I think that's about it. Anyways, again despite our proximity to Mexico and all that, I find that New Mexico has very few good Mexican, as opposed to New Mexican spots. Mexico Lindo and Taqueria Mexico in Albuquerque are actually the only good ones I can think of. Interestingly enough, New York City with it's nearly a million Poblanos has much better Mexican food. Anyways, these guys are from Guadalajara, which by most accounts is the most Americanized city in Mexico. I'm not sure if that's what's affecting this food, or if it's just simply that Guadalajara isn't the renowned food city that Puebla or Oaxaca is, but it seems to have hurt the food a bit here. I ordered camarones a la diabla, a dish I dream about because I've had such stupendous versions of it before, and I found it to be very standard here. The shrimp were far too chewy and the sauce, the devil's sauce, was plenty spicy, but not quite creamy enough and bursting with flavors other than spice to please me. I tried my wife's chicken burrito, which she seemed to enjoy, but found this too was quite bland. Still, the owners here were entirely friendly and their menu very comprehensive, so maybe I'll have to return to try some other dishes.

Surprisingly Good As best we could figure out, there are 2 of these restaurants in Taos. We called the southern one and there was a 45 minute wait. So we called the northern one and they said that we could come right in. It is located in a strip mall and it is pretty large inside. The program is to order and pay at a counter and they'll deliver it to your table. The servers don't do much for you after that and you have to grab one just to get a water refill. The food was really good. We had 2 different shrimp dishes and they were both great. I would like to try more of the menu.

  • Nicole T.

This place is amazing. We come here every year on vacation. They have great fresh tacos very traditional Mexican food. The margaritas are tasty as well. They have Mexican coke (as well as fountain coke) if you want a real sugar soda. This seems like food truck Mexican tacos I have gotten in other states. I have never had a bad meal here.

  • Kevin N.

Killed me some Mexican food and then killed me some trout while I was in Taos for a camping trip. Bam! The food was good but I'm really use to the good ol Texmex I get. I was hungry and this place did the job for me. I got the special plate of the day. Carne avocado. The pork meat was a little on the tough side. And the presentation on the messy side. I couldn't helped notice that my friend hated his huevos dish. I bet he got my dish instead.

    (3)
  • MICHAEL M.

The local seem to think this is great Mexican food. It may be, but it's not quality Mexican food. The taco meat is tough and taste like that I suppose because he cow suffered. I gave it to stars because I think it's really mediocre although the shrimps (camarones) al diablo were tasty. the tres leches was a presentation never seen before with whipped cream & chocolate sauce.

    (2)
  • Jackie D.

The Azteca quesadilla is delicious and large enough to feed my mother, my daughter and I. The restaurant is cafeteria style, which is a little odd, but seems to work. The carnitas tacos were ok, but thing to write home about. The bathroom is really far away from the restaurant, so don't wait until the last minute!

  • Geary J.

A trip to Taos must include an outing for dinner at the Guadalajara Grill! Several years ago we were coming into Taos from the north and were looking for a place to grab a bite and then crash at the hotel. The food was wonderfully fresh and the service was perfect, it was exactly what we needed at the end of a long road trip from Enid, Ok. Now lunch or dinner at the Guadalajara Grill is a tradition that we look forward too every time we go to Taos!

Good barbacoa tacos, great roasted chilis at the chili bar. A fast, cheap, delicious lunch.

  • Mallory M.

Not impressed with the incredibly bland rice and beans. Barbacoa was ALL FAT! My husband's steak was good though. I would not return given the price for mediocre food!

Great place. Close to my house. Burrito Supremo xmas. SO good! Be back soon!

  • Jen P.

I used to live in Taos, and this place was one of my regular spots... to the point where I could drop in and just order "lo normal" in Spanish, and they knew I meant 2 a la carte chicken tacos, light on the cheese. When I come down to visit friends from Denver/Boulder, I always stop by and eat at least one meal here. I love their chicken tacos, I love the shrimp Veracruz, and I really love the super friendly staff. My only complaint is that they don't have a location in Denver! Seriously. The Mexican food I've had in Denver just does not compare to "the Guad". NOTE: This is a MEXICAN restaurant, not NEW Mexican. If you are wanting traditional Northern New Mexican, go to Orlando's Cafe.

    (5)
  • Carrie H.

Yuck. I feel rely bad for the people who think this place deserves 4 plus stars. The food is super bland and leaves much to be desired!

  • Lisa B.

While visiting Taos, we stopped here twice. The fish tacos are excellent as is the Chile Rellenos. Quick, friendly service. The portions are huge! You may want to share a plate. Outdoor seating is available. Biker friendly; be careful with gravel areas in parking lot! Only negative, annoying flies when eating outside

Hungry and open for anything! Arrived at this eatery which has an order counter, a number block for your table and food arrives. Our table had taco carnitas, beef taquitas, a seafood ceviche, beans and rice, and a roasted or grilled side of vegetables, agave wine margaritas. Here is our take on taste and enjoyment.....loved the grilled veggies. The best dish on the table. We were underwhelmed by the very dry pork nuggets in the carnitas As well as the flavorful taquitas , over cooked, dry. The beans n rice exceedingly bland. The wine margaritas were served on the rocks w salt and tasted lovely. The tortilla shells were excellent. Xxxhot roasted green peppers were just the thing ALL the food needed to give it some moisture and kick. Red sauce was ok. The large bus station type dining room can get packed and this very family oriented place is liked by the locals. This unpretentious grill does not please our SW palate but truly disappointed in terms of dry bland pork n beef prep for tacos. It's got some good folks working there.

  • David L.

decent casual spot. not the best enchiladas or chile you're going to find in new mexico. a little lacking in spice and flavor. complementary roasted jalapeno bar is a nice touch though.

    (3)
  • Carol S.

Food is fabulous! Staff is very friendly and service was with a smile. Portions are huge....enough to share. A must in Taos.

    (5)
  • Thomas M.

Delicious, yes. Cheap NO. Authentic- second to none My food was very good, some damn good authentic carnitas (fried pork pieces) my girls fish tacos were great, as was the margahrita. The staff was SUPER friendly despite me speaking zerop spanish and overall it was a pretty great restaurant. However it was 37 bucks for 2 dinners a marg and a soda. so take it with a grain of salt.

I've heard that if you've spent most of your night drinking at your hotel then you should definitely have breakfast at the Guad. I've heard this. Everything is fresh, hot and yummy.

  • Tiffany W.

Disappointing! Someone had recommended the fried ice cream, so I gave it a try. The ice cream was bland and the "batter" was soggy corn flakes. Not recommended. I did not try any other food.

Stopped in one night when getting into Taos late. Didn't expect much, but received great food. Order at the counter and they bring out your food. The chimichangas are really big. You probably don't need to order two! I did. I took the 2nd one home. The burritos are big and full of meat, cheese, beans and rice. Hearty meal at a reasonable price. Chips and Salsa were not included in the price, so that was disappointing, but we still ordered them. Good chips. Good Salsa. Green shile was not too hot, which I liked.

OUR FIFTH AMAZING STOP: We were looking for something interesting in Taos and happened upon a different restaurant. Fortunately, our Yelp app (sooooo much better on the android) told us not to try that place. It then told us we absolutely should try the Guadalajara Grill across the street. Okay I'm giving the app too much credit but it's a matter of degrees. We went in and discovered, to our delight, that this place was a hole in the wall. Jimmy went to order nachos for us to share. I planned to order something else to share after a quick trip through the adjacent carwash to the bathroom. I returned right as the server was setting a gargantuan plate of nachos in front of Jimmy. One look and I abandoned my intention to order more food. The nachos were incredible. The staff was very accommodating and made our plate half roasted pork and half carne asada. The nachos had loads of everything on them and we sat there moaning as we ate. Any meal that sounds like a scene from When Harry Met Sally is an absolute winner in my book. This place is an absolute jewel. Go hungry and be willing to share.

    (4)
  • Jim W.

Ok, so I ordered nachos here. OMG (I can use OMG officially now as it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary). My wonderful wife and frequent traveling companion was going to order her own meal but we opted to go with just the nachos first. Good call. It was a huge plate of nachos and they were nice enough to split it with half carne asada and half roasted pork. Tons of toppings, very cheesy - what I'm trying to get at here is that an order of nachos from Guadalajara Grill is a meal for two. Bargain!

  • Janet P.

Very casual and very delicious!! We recommend the shrimp Vallarta and the shrimp tacos. Hope you like it spicy because that's the way it comes! Great for the family or if traveling through town. This no frill eatery is the place to go for real Mexican food.

    (5)
  • Dusty B.

Decent food, but not overly impressed. I had the chilli verde, it was bland to be honest. I should have had the chile rellenos. My wife had quesadillas. Portions were large and service was good. There was a long line of people waiting to get in.

    (3)
  • Mielita R.

Incredible spot in Taos. Very authentic Mexican food, without a trace of Tex-Mex. I don't think you could order anything bad here. Carnitas, steak, and fish tacos all got rave reviews from those I was with. My tacos were AMAZING, plus the added bonus of getting to chat with the cashier in Spanish made this a great lunch!

  • LelaYoga T.

There is no way you can beat the Aztec quesadilla. This gigantic pizza-like spicy vegetable quesadilla is to die for. Crispy, spicy chunks of broccoli, carrots, red and green peppers and queso. So much cheese sandwiched between to buttery, crispy hot flour tortillas. Delish. Then wash it down with a grande horchata. A sweet rice drink with the perfect dash of cinnamon. Spicy salsa seniors treat your señoritas to this perfect dish for two.

  • Roger C.

rellenos were stuffed with carrots, squash, and great cheese-not bad but not new Mexican-this place has Mexican food-not new Mexican. Enchiladas were awful. this place has a huge menu....you should be able to find something you like...

  • Rodney V.

This is the most jacked up restaurant I have ever eaten at! After reading all the excellent reviews I began to wonder if we went to the wrong place? 7 reviews mentioned the best fish tacos they ever ate! Fish taco's are my favorite thing to eat in a Mexican eatery. The portion of fish was skimpy, cold and dripping something, I'm guessing it was grease on rubberized doubled up corn tortillas, 3 for $11.95! If I could have squeezed all the grease out and applied tire patch adhesive, you probably could have got a couple miles out of them for sure. A cheese enchilada, beans and rice, two bowls of posole and two medium margaritas $50. The posole was OK, the margaritas were really good. Not even gonna get started on the order placing fire drill, I think I'll go to Taco bell next time. YUK!

    (1)
  • David B.

Incredibly overrated. There is a sign on the door explaining that they had to raise their prices, it's not that cheap anymore for a Mexican restaurant. The chicken meat in the burrito I had was what I would cut off and give to my dog, except it was overcooked. The verde sauce was almost completely flavorless. The portions were indeed large.

    (2)
  • Stephanie H.

I wasn't so sure about this place when we walked in, but I am so glad we took a chance and tried it. You walk in and order from the counter - menu is on the wall but it's so huge you should probably grab a menu and look it over. I had the barbacoa tacos. Yum yum. Salsa and guac were freshly made. Portions were huge - even for the lunch size. There are so many places to eat in Taos, it's ridiculous, but we will definitely be back to try more things.

  • Andrew M.

What a great find! It didn't look like anything from the outside, but the food was awesome and authentic. If you like spicy shrimp, try the camarones a la diabla. Our kids had great meals. The service was fast and friendly. They hit every note perfectly.

I had seen this joint as I was driving along the main street in Taos upon arriving in town. When friends and I decided on mex for dinner i mentioned this so we stopped and agreed that we would leave if the menu did not appeal. As soon as we noticed the "Best of ..." poster we decided to stay and sample. The ordering was a little confusing until one of the customers explained that we order at the counter and the food was brought to our table by a waiter. There was a whole lotta choices on the menu including half orders which is good by me. there was choices of pork, fish, beef and chicken tacos. For a somewhat small establishment there were many seafood choices including shark tacos. I ordered barbacoa tacos and one of the friends had the fish tacos. All entries have the usual side of rice and beans. They also serve desserts such as fried ice cream, tres leches cake etc, which after my half order of tacos i had no room left. I did have a margarita rocks, it was okay not great. My margarita arrived quickly and the food followed shortly. We all enjoyed our entrees and I especially liked the barbacoa, lots of it in a double corn tortilla. The condiments including cut lemon and lime wedges and pickled jalapenos are available next to the silver ware. I would eat here again on next visit to Taos. The clean enough restrooms were way in the back at the end of a hall way. This was good for me because I dislike restrooms very near the eating areas. This is a touristy town and in summer so 8.95 for a two taco plate was not too bad.

Awesome food. Aztec Quesadillas were massive. I had the fish tacos and they were quite tasty. Dont forget to order the fried ice cream, it feeds 2. What a view of the mountains... Coming from Orlando, FL

  • Terra H.

This is not your typical restaurant, more like a cafeteria. You order at the window and pick up your own silverware and napkins. They bring the food out. It's basic, good, fast, and filling.

    (4)
  • Eric And Jennifer R.

The best shrimp tacos in New Mexico! I don't like that it is prepared different based on the cook. I love it when they cook the shrimp whole with green onion because it is more flavorful. Squeeze a slice of lime, drizzle their yummy salsa and guacamole over your shrimp tacos. There are two locations in Taos. I recommend going to the location on the south side of town.

    (4)
  • Chris W.

Chicken burrito is outstanding -- chargrilled flavor. Fast service. Margaritas have plenty of fuerza. Cold bottled beers are also good. Kids like the horchata. I'd go back to this place in a heartbeat. Note that some Yelp reviewers are tourists who don't like it because they don't know New Mexican food.

    (5)
  • Atom M.

Made Taos that much better. First place I stopped at on my way through town. The size of the tacos are great. Salsa spicy and just good food all around. Came back for a second round during my visit. Did a steak burrito and the meat was thick cuts and tasted great. Oh and the horchata was amazing too. Must visit if you love real Mexican food.

  • Jeremy T.

This place is delicious. We went to Taos to visit family and I saved my appetite for their shrimp quesadilla and menudo. You will not leave hungry when you go here!!! There's two locations in Taos. I recommend the one that is further down the strip. It's attached to a car wash. It's much larger is size. I added a picture of my quesadilla for your mouth watering needs.

Authentic to be sure. Yuk on refrained beans as a side - why bother. A nice lunch place when traveling through Taos.

I had the most delicious fish taco's here while visiting Taos for New Years. I have never had fish tacos so delicious! Fish tacos to me are breaded, dry, cabbage, blegh. But, I took the advice of a local friend and ordered them and I am so thankful that I listened! They are garlicy and saucy and simmered meat just OH so good. We also had some guacamole and salsa which was delicious and I had a nice large wine margarita. The margarita sounded a little odd at first but it was very tasty!

  • Jerry B.

My wife and I have been visiting Taos for the last 3 days and for our last meal here we decided to try this restaurant. I am still trying to understand the difference between "new mexican" and mexican but by any standards this restaurant was just average. I had the Colorado Chile and while the meat was tender enough, the sauce had no seasoning to speak of - very bland. The sides of refried beans and spanish rice were the standard fare that you would find at any cut-rate mexican restaurant. My wife seemed to enjoy her chicken fajitas - thought they were seasoned nicely. I would personally recommend Orlando's or Michael's over this restaurant.

Camarones a la Diabla with orange-butter sauce, a glass of lemon-water, and a napkin to wipe away the spiciness. Yummmmm...

  • Scott L.

I went here for dinner on a recent trip to Taos and while it was pretty good, I've been to many other great Mexican places to give a better rating. I had the Chicken Fajitas and they were pretty good. The Margaritas were also pretty good and I especially liked the Banana Margarita. The chips and salsa were also good, but they charged for any after the first bowl. The service was good and the prices were pretty reasonable, but if I'm back in Taos I'll go try some of the other places in town.

Pretty good , fairly authentic Mexican (not New Mexican) food.. Good tacos. Carne asada or tacos al carbon are a couple good options for the uninitiated..Definitely the best Mexican food in Taos. I stopped here many times when hanging out in Taos.. (New Mexican food is a different category, the two can't be compared.) They sell Mexican beers and orchata. It is pretty cheap and an extremely casual place. Most if not all of the staff appear to be from Mexico (rather than New Mexico), which is a good feature for a Mexican restaurant.

  • Jill P.

This place is always packed so we decided to try it. You order your food at the counter then go sit and they bring it out to you. We sat outside since it was a nice evening. Definately a "Do Over". We were not disappointed at all. I had the fish taco meal, 3 tacos with rice and beans. The rice was just steamed rice and the re-fried beans were the normal but the tacos were very good. I totally scarfed them down. My husband got the pork tostadas and he went away stuffed and very very happy. His margarita was yummy on the warm evening as well. I would go back again if I was staying here longer.

My absolute favorite place for chicken tacos. I love the tomatillo salsa that accompanies them. I prefer the north side location.

  • randall t.

Tasty mexican food with a southwestern twist. The prices are low, and the food is really authentic and delicious. This location is one of two in Taos (the other one is on Paseo del Pueblo Norte), and they are both equally good, but this one has outdoor seating. The northern location is quieter, though. I recommend the pork burrito supremo. It's big, but if you can't eat it all, help yourself to a to-go box and snack on it later. Mmmm, pardon me while I go heat up my leftovers. One of the best mexican places in Taos.

  • Chris R.

Taos is a small town kind of rough around the edges lots of tourist stuff and expensive art. Decent place to spend a day but make sure you do it between 11-5 because most everything is closed any other time. That evening we took a long walk up the main road to a place called Orlando's that was recommended, but when we got there it was just closing, I was disappointed as I wanted to try their blue corn enchiladas. So we started walking back and came across the Guadalajara grill which was very tasty, I had a shrimp taco, barbacoa'd cows cheek taco and an excellent Chili Relleno that had corn and carrots in it as well as cheese.

This review for the location across from Ace Hardware... Large spot that can hold large parties. Fast and friendly service. We had a bday celebrant and they gave us a large dessert for FREE = ice cream coated with whip cream & cinnamon in a tostada shell. Prices just a tad high, but a good place to eat if you don't really want a sit down restaurant. Burritos come wet, quesadillas tasty, tacos are good!

    (5)
  • Carman C.

Breath of fresh air! Fast Friendly and Fun. Don't hassle with plaza traffic. Come out to the grill and select from a HUGE menu and eat your meal inside or our with a magnificent view of the taos mountains. I had the fish tacos and nibbled on my wife's quesadillas.

  • AVID C.

I loved my fish tacos here, but the hubby, who had chicken tacos, beans and rice, became gastrointestinally ill. He insists it was the food, and since I had something different, I will have to go with him on this one. Service was fine and again, the fish tacos were excellent.

    (3)
  • Erin S.

OK for Mexican food, but the price was pretty high for what you actually get. Little to no service, and only 2 tortillas came with the meal, then when we asked for a few more, they charged extra to bring out 2 more. The margarita was gross...I think they used sweet & sour instead of a mix or lime juice, plus it cost $8.50 for a worse than average drink.

  • Adam G.

Authentic mexican food, no Tex-Mex here. Burrito was awesome, quasadilla's were HUGE. Prices were more than reasonable and we finished it off with fried ice cream which can NOT be missed if you have kids, its HUGE. If your looking for good mexican food in Taos, this is as good as it gets.

After seeing the high rating with a good number of reviews, we were excited to eat some good NM food. Boy were we sorely disappointed. The carnitas tacos were overcooked, dry and lacked flavor. Swallowing bites of this stuff left my throat scratched and raw. Even the pico on the tacos wasn't fresh. And you know fresh onions and fresh cilantro have a Something, right? But these? Meh. Probably been sitting in their cooler for weeks and slopped on. The Spanish rice was equivalent to Uncle Ben's. And the refried beans probably came out of a Great Value can. Their green chilis were ok- no spice no heat. The only thing that seemed fresh and had flavor was their salsa. The location was ok if ur in a hurry to eat and if u don't mind the restaurant abutting a carwash. All in all, it was an abysmal welcome to Taos. It was a waste of our time and money. Definitely not coming back. Go to La Cueva instead; that place is well worth it.

Loved it! Doesn't look like much, but it is authentic and really good quality! The roasted jalapenos are awesome, and the fish tacos are top notch. My daughter also loved her kids bean and cheese. Portions are so big you could have leftovers for days. If I had a fast metabolism I would wish they had one in every town!

I was surprise find such good food in Taos having traveled around in Colorado. Once you cross the border, its like a different world. I expected a version of Colorado Tex-Mex dog food but was I wrong. The barbacoa tacos were awesome and carnitas were crispy outside & moist inside. Fish tacos were not all dried up. Finally, I can tell my Mexican dishes apart unlike further up north. Both locations are good and consistent. Really really busy during lunchtime especially with the locals, which is a great sign.

Fish tacos! We hardly order anything else. My husband picks them up to go, drives 20 miles home and they are still hot when he gets here. For $10 you'll get 3 tacos, fresh, creamy refritos, a plop of rice. Don't forget to grab some cut limes by the front door before you leave. Unfortunately, like most places in New Mexico they still use those styrofoam boxes. Recycling is 10 or 20 years behind the rest of the world.

Great tacos and my husband loved the calamari and very reasonable priced.

The Guadalajara Grill is one of the best places to eat in Taos! Seriously good Mexican food. I love their chicken burrito with red chili. Their tacos also rock- all of them. Just tried the chicken tacos the other night, YUM! So does the Quesadilla Azteca. And their chimichangas. But everything on the menu is good, so you can't go wrong! Huge portions.

If you want great Mexican food at very reasonable prices, this is the place to go to. Taos has quite a few restaurant choices, but this has to be a stop for those that are craving authentic Mexican food and the feeling that you are in the real South West . Have lunch at the Turquoise Teapot and walk around town, then head over to the Guadalajara for dinner. This is a great way to spend a good portion of the day.

Yum yum yum!! We ate here a few times while traveling in New Mexico and went to both the Paseo South and North locations. The food was excellent and portions very large. I particularly loved their quesadillas, while my companions also enjoyed very flavorful shrimp dishes, especially ones with the "secret sauce." I have to say burritos were very so-so, so I recommend going with a more elaborate dish (or a quesadilla!) to let the cooks show their talent! As for desserts, OMG amazing. Cheesecake was good, but what really stuck out was bunuel - fried dough with cinnamon, sugar, whipped cream... I don't remember what else but gosh was that good! And under $2!

So I am rating this simply on the way it smelled. We didn't actually order because what we wanted was a good marg but didn't really dig the order then sit idea. BUT the place SMELLED wonderful. If I am back in Taos I will make it a point to be hungry when this place is open.

Stumbled across Guadalaraja Grill on our way to Santa Fe. Very casual place, excellent authentic food. We made a point to go back again. Tacos, enchiladas & tres leches cake were all fantastic. Freindly staff, lots of locals - can't beat it.

  • Scott S.

We didn't actually eat there because the vegetarian options were minimal. Also, the interior was not so nice because of the fluorescent lighting. I'm assuming the food is really good though per the other reviews.

Fantastic cocktail camerones and ceviche. Grab a negro modello and wait for them to bring it to the table. This has the authentic feel of a real taquerilla. The menu selection is vast and the food kicks *ss. 2 location - on each end of town but I prefer the one on the way to the ski area. It's a little more cafeteria like. Although the one on the way to Santa Fe has an outdoor patio.

Delicious, no-nonsense, no pretense food here. Ingredients were fresh and flavors plentiful. I ordered the salmon which had a great lime/garlic flavor and was smothered in fresh tomatoes. The side dish rocked. I can't recall how to spell it, but it's ch(something) and has zucchini, roasted corn, broccoli, and celery. Fantastic! The flan scored big points too!

What a great find! It didn't look like anything from the outside, but the food was awesome and authentic. If you like spicy shrimp, try the camarones a la diabla. Our kids had great meals. The service was fast and friendly. They hit every note perfectly.

Bargain!

Very casual and very delicious!! We recommend the shrimp Vallarta and the shrimp tacos. Hope you like it spicy because that's the way it comes! Great for the family or if traveling through town. This no frill eatery is the place to go for real Mexican food.

  • Dusty B.

Decent food, but not overly impressed. I had the chilli verde, it was bland to be honest. I should have had the chile rellenos. My wife had quesadillas. Portions were large and service was good. There was a long line of people waiting to get in.

It's got some good folks working there.

decent casual spot. not the best enchiladas or chile you're going to find in new mexico. a little lacking in spice and flavor. complementary roasted jalapeno bar is a nice touch though.

YUK!

This is not your typical restaurant, more like a cafeteria. You order at the window and pick up your own silverware and napkins. They bring the food out. It's basic, good, fast, and filling.

    (4)
  • LelaYoga T.

There is no way you can beat the Aztec quesadilla. This gigantic pizza-like spicy vegetable quesadilla is to die for. Crispy, spicy chunks of broccoli, carrots, red and green peppers and queso. So much cheese sandwiched between to buttery, crispy hot flour tortillas. Delish. Then wash it down with a grande horchata. A sweet rice drink with the perfect dash of cinnamon. Spicy salsa seniors treat your señoritas to this perfect dish for two.

  • Lee O.

Food is really good. This is a sit down restaurant but they don't do table service. You pay at the counter and they bring it to you. They have beer, wine margaritas, and sodas. Their tacos are really good. The Azteca quesadilla is really good too. Nice outdoor seating area also.

  • Carrie H.

Yuck. I feel rely bad for the people who think this place deserves 4 plus stars. The food is super bland and leaves much to be desired!

    (2)
  • Tom Hunt B.

    (2)
  • A H.

  • Clayton A.

  • Dan H.

Disappointing! Someone had recommended the fried ice cream, so I gave it a try. The ice cream was bland and the "batter" was soggy corn flakes. Not recommended. I did not try any other food.

rellenos were stuffed with carrots, squash, and great cheese-not bad but not new Mexican-this place has Mexican food-not new Mexican. Enchiladas were awful. this place has a huge menu....you should be able to find something you like...

I loved my fish tacos here, but the hubby, who had chicken tacos, beans and rice, became gastrointestinally ill. He insists it was the food, and since I had something different, I will have to go with him on this one. Service was fine and again, the fish tacos were excellent.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
