Badlands Grill Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

The online menu looked tempting, and even though others in my party wanted to go to the Cracker Barrel, I prefer to try locally-owned establishments when I can. The place is decorated in "upscale rustic" -- a hitching post hanging from the ceiling between the dining area and the bar, with three saddles on it, a six-gun in its holster hanging next to our booth, etc. But the menu was totally different from what I expected. Fewer choices, and when the price isn't written as "$13.99" but simply "14" you get an idea that this isn't Burger King or even IHOP. They said they hadn't updated their website. That was an understatement. I had their "stuffed burger" which was something like two 1/3-lb. hamburger patties pressed together with cheese in between. It was good, and their home-made potato chips were nice and crispy. I couldn't eat the whole thing, and left the equivalent of a Big Mac on the plate. I don't think it was really worth the $14.00 I paid for it, and it was one of the least expensive items on the menu. While the food was good, the limited menu choices made the value less than what we would have preferred. We left thinking it was OK, but with no lower cost items on the menu we might have been better off at Cracker Barrel, after all.

I was pleasantly surprised at the meal we enjoyed at this restaurant in Gallop. The Badlands Grill served a lovely meal. The wine list was decent and I had a nice pan fried trout. My husband had blackened salmon that he liked as well. This place is more of a steak place, but we didn't want beef on this particular night. The entrees came with soup and salad....we pressed on the soup just because it was too m much food. The salads were very fresh..nice leafy green lettuce....no iceberg in sight. The mashed potatoes were relish too. All around nice restaurant ....exceeded all my expectations.

So I read the yelp reviews on this place and was in the mood for a good slab of meat after a good roping (that got rained out...bummer!). My father and I decided to stop here for dinner. First, I have to say it has good ambiance. It certainly radiates a "steakhouse" feel. The waiter was VERY attentive and the menu had good selections. All of those deserved 5 stars. The bread was a bit surprising when it was brought out. It appeared to be a single thickly sliced piece of bread that was akin to something I could buy at the local grocery store, and cut into 4 pieces. It wasn't exceptionally fresh, but it tasted OK. Not spectacular. The butter was good. A little sweet and was enough to liven up the otherwise VERY average bread. 2 stars for this. The salad was good. 3 stars. The green Chile soup was AWESOME! I would recommend that any day. On to the entree. I had the prime rib (it was on special). It was good. It was supposed to be crusted, but there wasn't even a good char on it, but the meat was prepared to my liking. The baked potato was good (I think they called it smothered), but I like to think a smothered baked potato would come with some sour cream...apparently they don't think so...kinda weird to me. Anyhow, Prime rib gets 3 stars and the potato gets 2. My father had the ribs. He said they were over cooked (my father is somewhat of a rip connoisseur) and the honey BBQ sauce seemed a little bitter and the fries he had with it were soggy. So, 2 stars on the entire rib entree. One other bonus is that they carry a decent selection of beers (Shiner is one of my favorites and I had that with dinner). 4 stars on that. All in all, its a decent steak house. I wouldn't go out of my way to hurry back, especially with average food at nice steak house prices, but I would say the meal was satisfactory.

We started our 3 week cross country road trip today. Our goal was to make it from Southern California to New Mexico in the 1st day. As we approached the city of Gallup I went on Yelp to see what i could find as dinner options. There was a ton of ratings for Badlands Grill so we decided to go for it. When we walked in the door we could tell it was going to be good. It was clean, nice ambiance, and casual. Zach was our server and he was beyond helpful and on top of it. We shared a bottle of Chateau Ste. Jean Cabernet and split a sirloin the we got peppercorn crusted. They serve their bread with this delicious honey apple butter. The ceasar salad, green chili soup and steak we phenomenal. We had the best time and are glad we stopped in. We hope to come back again one day!

Great food and great staff. These guys know how to do a steak! I'll make it a point to come back again next time I come into town.

very nice atmosphere. I had the Ribs and they were a little peppery. The Caesar salad was okay it was drenched in dressing. Other than that it was a very nice meal for the price and the service was great.

Had a ribeye that was tough and fatty. Portions and food quality were sub par for the cost. At $30+ per person I expect better. Service was good. Bottom line was not enough bang for my buck.

We checked into our hotel and went looking for a restaurant...we looked it up on Yelp. Very friendly wait staff and was very accomodating. Food was pretty good. We had an adequate amount...we ordered sandwiches...pretty good.

Simply great food with a nice, slightly upscale atmosphere. The top sirloin steak was a "10" and the service was excellent. My steak would have been enough for two. We wanted to find something in Gallup on Route 66 but most offerings are either Mexican or "Diner" food so we opted to try Badlands for gluten-free choices and a quiet environment. Badlands was an excellent choice. You won't be disappointed.

Well prepared steak - we split the "American Koby" special - and tasty appetizer, a pair of chili poppers wrapped in bacon ("baked! Tell them that!" says the wife). Chocolate sauce with cayenne tasty but a tad thin. Nice beer and wine selections, with some unexpected diversity. Great dining includes the service, and ours was over the top: Amanda was cheerful, friendly and authentic, and getting to know her has enriched our trip through the southwest. The waitstaff backed each other up - always nice to see a team effort.

Valentines day 2010 and it's about 8 pm in Gallup, NM We are moving east and have been looking for a place to eat all night and everything either looks horrid or is closed. We drive by this place and man what a gold mine was this. Let me say, this was arguably one of the best steaks i've ever had. I've eaten at many high end steak places in Cali, Vegas, MO, TX, etc. This place is an absolute GEM. I got the Black Dahlia and my wife the Filet Mignon (lucky because I got the last BD they had and she one of the few filets' left). The steaks were perfectly aged, perfectly cooked, and perfectly seasoned. This place could do NO wrong. Even their homemade crackers still have me with a craving after a month! This place was definitely top notch, I really hope they can make it in a struggling town. If you are EVER in Gallup, this is the PLACE to go!

We stopped here while on a road trip. The outside of the restaurant boasted great BBQ, but the food left much to be desired. I ordered the French Dip sandwich and had to send it back. The meat was very fatty and not the "juicy prime rib" that was listed on the menu. We were disappointed that the owner/manager never spoke to us about our meal. There was an avoidance that sealed the deal in our never returning to this restaurant again.

We were just driving through town and didn't have high hopes for stopping in Gallup for dinner. This place was outstanding! I had the "tokyo ribeye" and it's one of the best ribeye's I've ever had. I used to live in Tokyo and it doesn't actually have a Japanese flavor at all but it's excellent. My husband had one of their stuffed burgers which sounded kind of strange to me but he loved it, ate every bite. I was asking the waitor about red wines and he immediately suggested their flight, which I hadn't noticed and so for $12 I got 2oz each of 4 different wines, some I chose and some he suggested. Three out of the four wines were a knockout and they offered to switch the one I wasn't so keen on. They also went way out of their way to be super kid friendly to our four year old. They made her a special meat sauce for her pasta (she just ate the rest for breakfast). It's a family restaurant and it's obvious that they care a lot about the food and the people who come in for a meal. We're already looking forward having a dinner here on our way back through.

Badlands is a good steak house. It is not very large, and with few options in Gallup you might want to get there early. All of us had a good meal. As others have noted, the cuts of meat weren't really the level I would expect from a place like this, but they were generous and pretty good.

What a great find in Gallup on our road trip! Service was excellent and friendly. Nice western atmosphere. Amanda our server, enhanced our visit with local information. The food was very good! Best Burger on our trip! Stuffed with Goat cheese and green chili! YUM! BIG servings, easily split by my husband and I. Tried a wonderful New Mexico pinot. Nice regional wine selection.

We decided to try Badlands Grill based on others' Yelp reviews. When our waitress confirmed that the only burger available was a one pound portion of meat, we decided to share an order of fish and chips. We asked to add the green chile won tons as an appetizer. Our entree arrived and we asked about the won tons. When the waitress returned, she informed us that they were out of the won tons. Not a good way to start the meal. The fish was rather tasteless with no help from the tarter sauce. The chips, however, were homemade and quite tasty. Would we eat here again? No.

This place is nice and clean. The staff is very helpful and nice. I ordered a steak and it was cooked to perfection. There is also a gift shop when you first walk in. They sell souvenir items from the local area. The majority of it is Navajo stuff. Probably because there is big population of Navajo. The rest of the group I was with really enjoyed their meals as well.

Went here on the recommendation of the front desk clerk at the Hampton Inn, on a cross country trip. Now you have to understand this is Gallup, New Mexico, not known for its gourmet dining establishments, so I am making this review based on this caveat, it is Gallup, New Mexico, you know, I went there with my exwife, who i still live with and is my best friend; anyway we both had steaks and wine, I had the filet and she had the ribeye, both steaks were good, the small wine list is good for Gallup, wines listed run the price gamit from very reasonable to expensive, $22.00 per bottle to $120.00. They also have a by the glass selection. If ever in Gallup again for the evening we will be back for another steak and wine.

It's hard to rate this place, I have eaten here about five times, perhaps more. All of my meals with the exception of one dish has been four star. Perhaps what detracts stars is the price and one sign they have posted about unrully children. Badlands try, and I almost want to give them an extra star for that. Their green chili stew and stuffed burgers are items my friend's crave when they come to town. I never found the service lacking. The sign, I don't go in there with children to start with, but this isn't a singles orientated town, pretty much everyone has kids. In most places this is mitigated by distraction, or sticking the kids far from the singles. I really am unsure what the proper step would be. However the sign they have I feel is the opposite of a welcome sign. It's not a good face to wear in a community that is so family orientated. So I take away a star for this reason alone. Otherwise I would rate it four stars. The quality of beef, I am not an expert on, but other than the dish I didn't like, i've never felt like I was getting something substandard.

What a great restaurant!!! Got a coupon from the Hampton Inn for a free appetizer. We had nachos & they were the best ever!! The soup had homemade noodles and garlic crackers! We had wonderful whole grain bread. We had porkchops that were great!! This restaurant just opened in August - we would highly recommend eating here. My husband will be traveling next month with a buddy and plans on driving 100 miles out of the way to eat here again! It always feels good to bring a friend to a great restaurant.

We came in late at around 10 pm and they still welcomed us for dinner. Great food (we had the sirloin) and friendly service in a relaxing atmosphere made a very pleasant evening.

Keep moving!!!! I highly suggest you don't wast your time or money. The food is way over priced and then substandard when you get it. I have eaten there twice and never will again. The last time I was there I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and they brought it to me without any buffalo sauce on it! I'm mean it's I'm the freaking name people! The service sucks and you pay for way way more than you get.

My dad and I were on our way from southern california to chicago. We are foodies and a little critical of food. I am a professional chef and my dad is a retired French teacher and a fantastic cook as well. We wanted to eat somewhere nice, and we were worried about what we would find in a small town in New Mexico...We have had some bad food experiences in states like Utah during cross country adventures and we were not in the mood for another one. Anyways we read reviews about this restaurant and we knew that we were going to be in good hands, but we did not know that we were going to enjoy it so much that we might plan trips around coming back!!! Our server Katrina was wonderful and she was very knowledgable about her menu, ingredients, etc...She was honest and gave us fantastic service. We had potatoe skins to start, they were not your typical greasy bar skins. They appeared to be yukon golds cooked perfectly, and topped with cheese, green onion, loaded up with bacon :), and had a wonderful spicy green chile sauce. They made are mouths hot but the heat went away quickly and left are mouths watering for the rest of the meal. We had some nicely portioned salads, the raspberry vineagrette was to notch. The homemade chicken noodle soup and green chile soup were both delicious. The soup was served with toasted garlic and herb saltine crackers which were a great touch. We both had the Dahlia Steak which was essentially a black pepper crusted ribeye with great marbeling and of course cooked to perfection. These steaks were served with a brandy cream sauce, fried onions, and garlic mashed potatoes. To sum it up great food great service and I will make an effort to make it back to this restaurant even though its about 1400 miles from my home in Chicago Illinois!!!

You can't go wrong with this place--they know how to do their steak, and the green chili "poppers" (stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon, and of course, fried) are addictive like things bad for you should be. We had Elk steak and it was perfectly cooked. The service was polite, attentive, and just right, thanks to our server Katrina. Definitely worth a stop.

Wow the service was the best I've had in this town so far!!! When we drove up we never would of thought the inside was as nice as it was!!! It's not that the outsides bad but it gives you a nice surprise walking in. The decor was really wonderful and ranch style. The food was to die for I had the Poppers which were like no other poppers I've had before and can't wait to get them again! The filet I got was amazing it melted in my mouth especially after adding the Black Daliha sauce (sp?) It could be considered on the pricey side but if your going for a steak well a good steak aged 21 days you expect to pay for it!!

The decor of this restaurant is cowboy theme, looks nice. We ordered sweet tea, the tea was sweetened with artificial sweetener. Not good. The brisket was dry not juicy at all as described. We decided to leave. Very disappointing. We will not be back to this restaurant when we return to Gallup.

Went here for dinner. I had the chicken with green chilie and cheese. Side of mashed potatoes. Both were quite good, as was the starter salad. Had calamari as an appetizer, which was merely ok. The service was good as well. The beer selection was quite good, with selections from harder to find breweries. The prices are a bit high, even for Gallup. Still worth checking out for a good meal.

  • Victoria C.

The service is fantastic, but the food is just OK for the price. I normally don't rate this high if the food is not outstanding, but the service was the best I have seen in years, easily rivals high end restaurants in major cities.

A place for dressin' up and eattin' out. OK, Gallup, NM is not known as a culinary capital of the SW, but this little place sets the standard. It looked a little shady from the outside, but once we got inside we were greeted by Jenna there was a white table cloth....in Gallup! Go figure! We've had a run of bad service and bad food on a trip across Rt. 66 and point East and were expecting the same. We didn't expect much with Cowboy Caviar (AKA Rocky Mountain Oysters) but found it to be off the menu. A bit disappointed we settled for the hatch chili poppers starter, fillet soup, and BIG Daddy burger. The hatch chili poppers were AMAZING. Long hatch chilies stuffed with spicy cream cheese and jalapeños, wrapped with bacon and fried. This is NOT the starter to miss no matter how much you like bull balls. The filet soup was, well, using the 'A' word again... AMAZING! Large chunks of filet mignon with potato and spices and served with was seemed to be home made garlic crackers. It's not a normal menu item and "only served when ingredients are fresh" according to Jenna. Consider yourself lucky to get the soup and Jenna as a waitress. The BIG Daddy burger must of been good because I didn't complain, but overshadowed by the starters. Give this one a try. Enjoy!

I don't quite know what to make of this place. Scanning other reviews, I'm not the only one. It's a fun little place with a rustic interior. Clearly going for classy dining for the unpretentious. I'm tracking. But, men's restroom seems to be going for fast casual on a budget. Menu and prices want to rival the urban swanky places and cuisine nouveau. Bread and butter are pedestrian, although the melted bottle as a tray is trendy. Green chili soup a smash hit. (Should have had a bowl of that and called it a night). Why so good? God bless the cooks for keeping their hands off the salt shaker. So many establishments make a mean soup and ruin it with a load of salt. Badlands got this right. I went for the smoked honey salmon. Sounded interesting. Indeed, smoke gave it an interesting texture and flavor, but the honey was just too sweet. Masked the subtle flavors of the salmon. Mashed potatoes were fine. Corn medley made for a novel side, but it needs more medley and less corn, and there needs to be more of it on the plate. Wifey had the sesame yellowfin. Dry and hard, but not far from where it needed to be. Wasabi potatoes were ridiculously hot. Wifey eats peppers that can drop full grown men, but she was finished with the wasabi potatoes after two bites. Good on them for not salting the goodness out of the medley. Perplexing menu. BLT is $10. Burgers run $15 and up. What really caught my attention were pork entrees pushing mid-$30s. I've eaten at some dandy places in my time, and even in the city I rarely see pork entrees push north of mid-$20s, and that's usually with premium stuff with it. Steaks push north of $40. Prices like these in a smaller city require that all elements be immaculate. Right now the service is the only thing there. Terrific service. It's a question of identity. Badlands either needs to shoot for simple steakhouse and pull back prices, or go high end and get a lot better with menu and technique, and improve the space. As is, just not a good value.

Service extremely slow. Cold appetizers. Freshly frozen salmon was still thawing out. Hamburger crunched like sand.

Second visit in as many years but both visits have been far from disappointing. Tonight we had arrived for a private dinner originally confirmed for 20 people. After a quick recount we realized it would be 27 people. Not a problem for William and his crew. They quickly added tables and chairs and accommodated this change. We had a great area that was private and quaint for the number of people we had in our party. The service (2 waitresses) was beyond outstanding. All salads were full and promptly served. The steaks, salmon, Gallup chicken, and paras were a huge hit with everyone. The sides were great and considering such a big group, it was served without a long wait. Desserts were raspberry cheesecake and a stuffed brownie. The cheesecake was by far the best cheesecake I've ever eaten. What better way to celebrate special friends than a fantastic meal, extraordinary service and a great atmosphere. Will be back next time we are in town!

Really disappointed about this restaurant and what it is grown into, racism. A friend dined in a few days ago and reported they were racially profiled. Were told to pee in the streets and were called "Navajo drunks". I will never give them business like i have before. There's a thin line between dining in one of the most expensive place in Gallup and receiving threats and name-calling from the manager. I would not recommend this place, please go to a family-owned restaurant like Jerry's Cafe, Earl's, Sizzlers..anything but this place. Double thumbs down. I'm disgusted. Also, there is video footage that will be released in the upcoming days that will be on Facebook. I would recommend the manager fix this issue or move to another restaurant that allows racism, but you are not welcomed in Gallup.

I came in tonight, and had to review so others don't make the same mistake that I did. My fiancé and I are driving from Los Angeles to New York, and staying in Gallup overnight. There weren't a lot of food options near our motel, so we decided to take a chance on Badlands Grill. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for us. We ordered a Cobb Salad and BBQ Nachos. The salad was so below mediocre, like something you'd eat in a hospital cafeteria. And it's not hard to make a good Cobb. Google it. There's recipes all over the internet. A standard Cobb salad has: Chicken, bacon, hard-boiled egg, blue cheese crumbles, tomatoes, and avocado. This was lacking both the chicken (unless you wanted to ADD it to your salad for a fee) and avocado. I'd suggest going back to drawing board with this salad. And the nachos. Well, they were interesting. The "chips" were actually fried flour tortilla triangles which were good, but way too filling and not proper chips. It was hard to eat more than a few. And on top of that, literally, the BBQ chicken was so dry, it was actually hard to chew. I would have given 1 star, but the server was nice enough and the restaurant seems like it's trying. The decor is good, if you don't mind staring at dead animals while you're eating.

Wow! This place rocks! I had a green chile potato and FILET mignonette soup for starters, then a blackened shrimp skewer, then for the main course, the Bandito, a NY strip smothered in green chile and cheese. Magnificent cut of meat. Then a big Margarita to wash it down. I didn't eat dessert but stared in awe when one would walk by my table. The bread and potatoes weren't all that but I loved the place, staff, decor, very pleased

I give it an A-OK 3 stars because (a) it was tasty enough (b) its Gallup; and (c) the staff was excellent. Claudia waited on us and she was absolutely perfect. Saturday night at 5; ICE cold Rolling Rock for Mr. Muscle set the happy tone. Ordered shrimp cocktail super cold; nice sized - 6 to an order. Pretty delicious and refreshing. Salad was mixed greens (nice touch) and blue cheese dressing was very good. The green chili stew that people are referring to was nothing too special. No real zip to it and watered down green chili verde soup, really. We split the rib eye with baked potato. Stop here. This place seems to have a habit of making things more complicated than then need to be. Example, the butter served with the microwaved bread was cinnamon flavored. Not so great with dinner as a starter. Then rosemary butter served with the baked potato. Idiot me (HATING rosemary!) thinks its just parsley flakes because who would ruin a perfect ribeye and potato by adding a completely unnecessary herb. I think you know the answer. Completely ruined this tater. I was pissed frankly. So beware. The steak on the other hand was very good; cooked to a perfect medium, great lip on it and very tender. Mr. Muscle did not like it was much - thought it tasted like fish/lobster. I did not agree. All in all, it was a satisfactory meal other than the ridiculous butter issue. That really needs to go away. 16 oz Rib eye with salad or soup and starch will run you about $38 - worth it.

Nice country environment. Good wine list. We ordered the filet mignon and salmon and shared to get 'surf 'n turf' the salmon had a slight fishing odor but the smoky flavor saved the dish. The filet was ordered medium well but arrived medium-medium rare. We did not send it back and found it tender and flavorful. I highly recommend the filet but would pass on the salmon next time. The staff were busy but professional and provided great service.

As good as it gets for a nice dinner in Gallup. Salad was fresh, steaks were excellent and cooked precisely to order. Very nice wine list, with most available by the glass as well as by the bottle. And the service was terrific. This might be pricey by Gallup standards but it sure wasn't by ours!

Everything in the restaurant was cold like the place had sat with no heat all day before they opened. The service was slow and the steak was overcooked. Have eaten here before and the food was very good. However, for what they charge, it needs to be right every time!

Unfortunately, it's hit-or-miss. Last month, went there twice in 10 days. I'd been before and luvd Daryl, our waiter, and the food was good but not outstanding tho the service was great. That was last year. This year, had heard a lot of great things. First off: service still excellent, attentive, polite. The first visit in 14 months was very good. Surprisingly busy, mid-week, lots of folks from out of town. We needed the reservation thankfully placed. The nachos were flavorful, our steaks done just right to our specifications. Really, really a fantastic if pricey dining experience - and I thought WoooHooo: huge improvement and maybe a new local fave. 8 days later, came crashing down off that high. Nachos were somewhat soggy and the flavor off, somehow. The steaks, mediocre. I can't even remember what else we ordered but there are no pics because nothing seemed worthy to post. I wish I had an idea to increase the likelihood of the former experience, but I don't. It's been 5 weeks and none from our group has thought to return.

We ate there this evening late and weren't sure what to expect. We ordered the prime rib special and we're very happy we did. Both the food and service were excellent. Our waitress Katrina was very friendly, polite, and professional. If we find ourselves in Gallup again, we will be back.

It was just down the street from our hotel. We got seated right off and ordered our drink. Our waiter came right off and took our order. The food came within a good time and it was perfect. I started with a salad. I had the New York Strip with green chills, cheese and covered tiny onion rings, it was done perfect with a baked potato. We then managed to save room for a great chocolate mouse. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoy a a good steak.

Ok. I'm going to repeat what some others have said. If you live in Gallup you are lucky. If you are traveling through, you need to eat here. I had a great steak and so did my wife. This place rivals the quality of steaks in any major city and it was a wonderful place to end the day after a 1000- miles of driving. I had the bone in rib eye, my wife had a fillet [it was little over temperature, but very tender]. The wine selection was terrific and the service was GREAAATTTT! We came in late and they acted as though we were the first people they had seen all day - the place however was packed. Prices were very reasonable and i am sure that this place alone has made my opinion of Gallup a very positive one.

Traveling across country from Los Angeles to Minnesota, we chose Gallup as our stopping point the first night. Not expecting much for choices to sup, we asked the gal at the front desk of the red roof inn what she recommended and she gave us two choices, Badlands Grill and a mexican restaurant that turned out to be closed. Badlands Grill it was... what a surprise this place was! The atmosphere is warm and inviting - very warm as you pass the wood burning stove on your way to the restrooms. The staff is pleasant, and we walked in after 9:30pm on a night when the place closed at 10pm. The food is the real surprise. With items like a stuffed burger with green chilies and goat cheese, peppercorn crusted steak, and black truffle mac & cheese, you feel like you're eating in a metropolitan area, not a dusty little town off the freeway. I enjoyed the stuffed burger I had. The green chile soup was tasty, with yummy chunks of steak. The bread was warm and perfectly done with a delicious butter. I noticed some reviewers questioned the consistency of the food, I can't speak to that, but I can say that if you're passing through - never to return - you could do a heck of a lot worse. Thank you Badlands Grill for giving me and my traveling buddies good food and good memories.

My two buddies and I are were town doing some elk hunting in the surrounding mountains. We hadn'tt seen anything except elk shit and lots of tracks. Maybe tomorrow will be more productive. Anyhoo... We were looking for steaks in Gallup. We read the reviews for Badlands paying special attention to Rick S's comments. At first, we thought he was being a little high-and-mighty. Sort of unfair, even. But, in a lot of ways, he's right. The food was pretty mediocre. The atmosphere and service were fine. The first loaf of bread the server brought us was sort of soggy. The second loaf (hey, we love bread... sue us,) was like a large, cylindrical crouton. We ordered the BBQ nachos as a starter. The dish itself was pretty tasty, but the chips were mostly tiny. little crumbs. The salad... just exactly what Rick said. A plate of bagged lettuce with a grape sized, flavorless tomato. The NY strips were well cooked, but not at all close to quality cuts of beef. The truffle mac and cheese was actually just greasy penne pasta. Delicious? Sort of, but not macaroni, not cheesy, and not truffley. The garlic mashed potatoes were sort of good. 22 bucks for a steak dinner on the road... not a bad price, I suppose. In any event, I have to go to bed so we can get up and 3 am and not bag any elk tomorrow. I'm a little pessimistic.

This was a great stop in Gallup and clearly a local favorite. Great service, topped with great food. I went with the BLT and wasn't disappointed. It wasn't a slopped together sandwich, but with specialty bread, thick bacon and fresh lettuce. The price was reasonable and the atmosphere was great. The only complaint was the side salad lettuce was a little brown on some pieces indicating it was pre made earlier in the day. Other than that, no complaints! Go with the Isotope brand beers! The Slamming Amber was awesome!

I went here with a $25 restaurant.com gift certificate and was disappointed. We went twice. Once I had a stuffed burger, with potato chips. Mediocre at best. Wendy's or Carl's Jr. would have been equally good. I realized I would never return, however, when, the second time I went, I ordered shrimp scampi. They brought me shrimp fettucine alfredo. I asked where the shrimp scampi was. They informed the that they made their shrimp scampi with alfredo. Welcome to New Mexico! Welcome to Gallup! My wife really enjoyed the seared tuna. But given some of the prices, before you go, read the reviews and thoroughly consider going to Sizzler.

Simply the BEST steak we've ever had. This restaurant is absolutely wonderful! What a surprise! We enjoyed the house specialty steak and cheddar burger. Super interior, extensive wine list, friendly staff. Jody M.

"Let the broken hearts stand As the price you've gotta pay We'll keep pushin' till it's understood And these badlands start treating us good..." --lyrics from "Badlands" by Bruce Springsteen Billing itself as "Gallup's Steakhouse", Badlands Grill left me a bit broken-hearted, as my two visits here didn't live up to the hype. It may seem obvious but when you operate a steakhouse, the primary ingredient--beef--has to take precedence. As a corn-fed Midwesterner, I think I have an accurate idea of what a good cut of meat should be: tender, with proper marbling and preferably wet-aged. The quality of beef served at Badlands is simply not commensurate with the expectation set by the menu. When you're looking at entrees that hover in the $30-40 range, you expect USDA Prime or at least Choice graded steaks. The cuts our party ordered were either skinny or had a lot of grizzle and/or tough sections, more like a Select or Commercial grade. The slabs of beef are the heart of the dining experience and if you don't get that part right, little else will probably salvage the meal. I've tried two different cuts: the "Black Dahlia" which is a pepper-crusted ribeye steak, and the prime rib. I forget the exact size advertised in the menu but the ribeye came out very thin and not at all like the ribeyes I'm used to consuming. As for the prime rib, it was tough and flavorless, except for the overwhelming coating of black pepper (Dave the Pepper Monkey from Top Chef would be proud). Though some elements of the meal were better (the green chile soup was delicious, as was the bread) and the service was reasonably attentive, I was very much disappointed with this restaurant. Oh, and a note to the chef: shaking some wilted lettuce out of the Dole bag onto the plate and adding a grape tomato does not a salad make. Despite the limited fine dining options in town, there are a few other places with better choices for pleasing both your palette and your wallet. Badlands needs to start treating its patrons good or there's a price it will pay, and soon.
