Wonderful mom and pop Mexican food restaurant. It's a perfect place to take a break on a road trip. There were many locals which means it's a good place. Our two orders took about 30 min which isn't bad for a restaurant but we wished it was quicker so we could have gotten back on the road sooner. The atmosphere was simple as expected in a small town but it's a nice break from the hustle and bustle of a big city. Our server was very nice and provided plenty of refills. My enchiladas were fantastic and my buddy said he enjoyed his combo plate. I will be back for more. Hopefully I can try their breakfast next time.

I stopped in here today for lunch on my way back to Colorado Springs from Odessa Texas. I have eaten here in the past, but never really thought about doing a review until today. Today I had the combination enchilada plate. It comes with rice and beans, and was very very good. I've had the "Sopapillaburger" in the past, and it was also very good. My waitress, and the other waitstaff were very friendly, and helpful. They all seem to work together in there nicely. Although it's not advertised, the meal came with sopapillas, and honey. Nice touch! About the only thing keeping me from giving it five stars is that they charge a ridiculous $1.29 for a tiny cup of sour cream. And I do mean tiny! I don't mind paying extra for a side of sour cream as I know it's kind of expensive, but that's simply robbery. Otherwise the prices are reasonable. I will be back, but I will bring my own sour cream next time :-)

This place is in a good location to stop while traveling. However, if you are used to good Mexican food (aka from Texas) do NOT go here. The chips and salsa were good. My friend and I both ordered cheese enchiladas, one red and one green. They were both disgusting. These people use AMERICAN CHEESE (or some other orange cheese) rather than MEXICAN WHITE CHEESE. The enchiladas were not enjoyable at all. They tasted like American cheese rolled up in a tortilla... Nasty. And the green sauce was not what I was used to. It was lumpy and had meat in it? So yeah don't go here if you've ever had good Mexican food.

Uhhh yuck. Dried up chicken, nasty rice, didn't even try the beans. Tea was over sweet. Wife struggled through half a cheese enchilada, son choked on a chicken enchilada Not that I should be driving back through but if I did, skip this place... Going to try the taco stand on other side of street now...

Small family-owned restaurant in greater metropolitan Clayton. Clean and nicely decorated cowboy-style, complete with corrugated metal ceiling. Full but not too crowded on a Friday night. Prompt service. Chicken quesadillas and cheese quesadillas served with green hatch chili peppers and both very good. Guacamole was okay. Queso and salsa both alright but pretty obviously store-bought.

The chile was Ok, but Velveeta cheese in an enchilada? Oh please! We sat there for twenty minutes waiting for our bill... Clueless waitress. Not much to choose from in Clayton. Take a cooler with homemade... No one does it like mama and that includes the Rabbit Ear.

We stopped here on out way back to Colorado on a long road trip from Texas. We wanted good Mexican good and waited to get to Clayton. Service was good. We ordered nachos supreme to share. They were good basic nachos. Very cheesy. The best deal was the Mexican plate that hubby and I split. It had a taco, enchilada, chili rellano, and tamale. The chili rellano was the best I have ever had. Tamale was good. Enchilada was ok. My son had the taco and said it was good. The Mexican plate came with chips, salsa and guac salad. We were surprised when we went to order Sopapillas that our meal also included them too ... All for $10.79 or so. Ordered side of fries too for our daughter and they were good too. Has good parking for those pulling rigs.

We were just passing through. This place has the BEST tamales ever! I'm from Texas we know Mexican food, this is what it's all about! I will definitely find my way back.

Best Mexican food I've had! Service was very good. Food came out quick. My husband got the chicken fried steak and fries. He said it was excellent. Homemade. I had the Mexican plate and would say the same about it. The sopapilla came with the meal and was fabulous. Price was great. With 2 teas it was $28.

Looked nice from the outside. The Hostess sat us down an brought our drinks out immediately. Took awhile for our waitress to notice us and take our order. The salsa and chips were brought out and the salsa was bland and sugary. The taco dinner I ordered was served rice that was mixed with their salsa and sprinkled with DRIED celery. The beans were microwaved until they were dry and the taco shells were microwaved instead of oven crisped. A glob of Velveeta cheese capped off what was to become the most mediocre Mexican meal that I have ever had. The flies paid more attention to us than the waitress did. I travel all over the U.S. for business and have eaten a lot of Mexican food, but this was just wretched.

Great atmosphere and lovely waitress. Food was great. $10.99 Mexican Deluxe enough for two. And a surprise dessert!

Stopped here on a road trip from Colorado back to Florida. First, there is NOTHING like this green chili available in Florida. So fantastic. They were out of shredded chicken, so they made me a quesadilla with ground beef and the aforementioned divinely inspired green chili. It was, without question, the best quesadilla I've ever had. We also tried the enchilada combo, Christmas-style (both red and green sauces). They were also super tasty, especially the green side. But I had to make the pouty face at the boyfriend to get more than my share of the quesadilla- there was no contest. Son had the catfish- couldn't believe how well seasoned and perfectly cooked it was. Daughter? Don't ask. She ordered something that rhymes with hornhog. Obviously she got dad's food genes. ;-) Don't pass the place by! We might road trip again just to come back for more!

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND! DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Headed to Denver and Clayton was our last chance to eat anything that wasn't fast food. It was delicious! And reasonably priced. We even got free sopapillas, which may have been because it was Valentines day but it was still an awesome plus!

Yay for yummy food on a long/ridiculous road trip to Colorado! Yay I say! :) We were en route to Colorado from Dallas and in desperate need of cheap yet satisfying grub by this point. Luckily we drove past this place (which hubby recognized from prior road trips) and we selected it thanks to positive reviews from Yelpers like you ;) Thanks. I'm honestly not a big fan of Tex-Mex (uh, or in this case, NewMex-Mex) but I'll compromise in a jiffy. Despite my personal preferences, this place still delivered the yums. I got a combo plate with taco, tamale, and enchilada while my guy ordered the chile relleno (SP?). We both opted for both colored chile on top, water, and the optional sopapilla to end with (DO IT!). The food didn't knock my socks off but it definitely cured hunger pangs and was moderately tasty. The sopapilla was equally yummy and so worth it (though we split it). Our server was sweet and attentive while the folks up front were just as nice. Décor/environment is typical for road-trip diners. Nice place to stop, stretch your legs, and grab a bite.

The green chile burger is delish, such sweet staff! No alcohol though so if you're looking for a margarita go elsewhere.

If you're driving North and just left Texas, it is the perfect place to get your green chili fix. The juevos rancheros are good and the drip coffee is surprisingly delicious.

  • Brian M.

The food here can be a bit salty and the New Mexican food is definitely for the gringo, its not spicy at all. The chips and salsa are hit and miss, sometimes theyre great and sometimes its like eating a bowl of salty ketchup. The overall look of the place and the friendliness of the wait staff is very good.

    (3)
  • Dan P.

I'm surprised this place has been getting high reviews. Everyone seemed nice, but the food was mediocre. My dish had lots of salt, not great quality ingredients, high in fat, and not a whole lot of flavor. I swear they put a can of tomato paste on their rice and that's it. They should work on their recipes to make them fresher, healthier, and more flavorful.

  • J M.

Great find! Lots of locals, which is a good sign. Good mix of American & Mexican options. Try the Sopaburger or the Mexican special (chile relleno & cheese enchilada). Good service too. Green & red (hotter) chile sauces are delicious. Worth a stop!

  • Kyle S.

The only reason I did not give a 1 star is because the staff was friendly and the restaurant was well kept. As far as the food, we were very disappointed. Granted we came in for brunch and had chips and guac, huevos rancheros, and the taco special. Although we did not try any of their signature dishes, I would compare our meal to something I could buy from Walmart and prepare myself. Unfortunately in Clayton there aren't many more options...

A great stop when passing through northeast New Mexico. Their Mexican dishes were pretty good. We had a mix-up with our credit cards. They were able to get everything taken care of over the phone. Thanks guys.

I'd like to review the food but i dont have any yet. Been waiting 40 minutes on a friday at noon. No service and no food. Very crowded, so something must be good. NOT where you want to stop if you're on a roadtrip. Left after 45 minutes. Owner did NOT charge us for the coke.

  • Heather P.

The green chili relleno was amazing! Rest of the food was okay, service was good and the people were nice. Being from Colorado we have good Mexican food of all different types, so this wasn't one of our favorites. Seems like you should stick with a la carte items.

  • Misti H.

we stopped here on a road trip for dinner with our 12 year old and our 16 year old. It was delicious and reasonably priced. There was something on the menu for everyone in our family. The service was also excellent.

Do not miss their breakfast burritos! Whether you get one with red chile, green chile, or Christmas style, they are amazing!

Best green chile chicken quesadillas! The cheese was the so good. This will become our new lunch stop driving from Texas to Colorado.

  • Kimberly M.

We stopped here for lunch based on reviews but there were dead flies all over the place where the sugar caddy was on the windowsills dead flies on the table where my kids were eating. The food was subpar. The fries were undercooked. The rice was as if you were eating tomato paste. Also the rice had celery in it, who does that. The enchiladas were as if from a frozen dinner. The service was horrible. We did not even receive chips and salsa. We did not even get a single refill on our ice teas. Stay away.

Clean, easy to find, fast, easy parking, VERY clean restrooms, friendly staff. Beef enchiladas in "green chile" (note both the red and green "chile" sauces are chili con carne with beef) were good. Cheese enchiladas were made with fake cheese and not even the kids would eat them. Burgers are okay, thin but seasoned well. All and all a pretty good rest stop on the road between Amarillo and the mountains.

This appears to be THE restaurant in Clayton NM. Lots of ranchers eating lunch there when we stopped for lunch today. Fast and friendly service. This is not Tex-Mex, but good Mexican. Not new, but Clean. I had chicken taco plate. My husband had beef enchilada...he had some with green sauce and some with red...he likes a little spicier sauce so he recommends the red. Both were good. Right before finishing the waitress bought us soppaphias (sp?) and honey...and when requested, to-go cups for our teas.

The northeast corner of New Mexico is not a place I generally find myself to be, but I was out working the OK panhandle with some foreigners (ok, by "foreigners" I mean "easterners") and they were tickled by the idea of hopping across the border to NM. As it was lunchtime, I assigned myself the quest of finding them some New Mexican Mexican food, and this place popped up in results. Huzzah! I had me some enchiladas with christmas sauce - delicious, though greasy, which seems to be unavoidable with 95% of Mexican restaurants. I think I converted all my coworkers to christmas sauce, as well. The pre-meal salsa was pretty good, too, and I'm not much of a salsa person.

As a Clayton resident, I used to be very favorable towards the Rabbit Ear. But something recent has happened to change that. My daughter worked there for over a year, and was fired the day after Memorial Day because she is going off to Basic training mid summer. I will not support a restaurant that will not support our troops, and believe every service member should be aware of the decisions of this restaurant's owners.

I stopped in here for a late breakfast on a Friday morning. I had the green chile and cheese omelet with a side of sausage. I would skip the sausage next time as the omelete, hash browns and toast were more than adequate. The food arrived quickly and was cooked well. Maybe it was too obvious that I was an out-of-towner, but the staff wasn't particularly friendly or personable. Both hostess and waitress were a bit curt and did not make eye contact. They neither offered nor inquired about cream when I ordered coffee and seemed more interested in chatting with the locals who came in. If you happen to be in Clayton for some reason, I'd suggest eating here. It's a fine greasy spoon and probably a great deal better than the continental breakfast you'd have at a hotel

Wandered in here off the road on the trip from Texas to Colorado, and found a gem of a place. The owners were there, pitching in with the waitstaff and everyone else. Where else will you see an owner busing tables?? The waitstaff is friendly, efficient, and look like the kind of folks who'll call you "hon". Do try the red and green chile on the smothered chicken tenders; it'll make you very, very happy!

Really solid place to eat on your way to/from Colorado. Nice atmosphere and the food was good. Not going to make you miss your favorite big city place but the food was tasty. Lots of locals in the place so that's always a good sign. Had quesadillas, enchiladas and sopapillas. Happy with all.

As a displaced New Mexican, I always need my green chile fix every time I cross any border in to New Mexico. The Rabbit Ear cafe did not disappoint. I had the combination Mexican plate (two days in a row!). The green chile sauce has some kick to it and good flavor. I really liked the taco and found it quite tasty .. and I'm not a big taco fan. The negative observation I have is that the cheese on the enchilada tasted more like melted sliced American cheese rather than a nice Longhorn or Cheddar. The sopapillas were acceptable but greasier than I like. My aunt had the green chile cheeseburger, which looked quite yummy if you go for burgers. She was happy with it. I had one of her onion rings ... too greasy for me but tasty none the less. The decor is kind of cowboy/western and fun. Very good service from the wait staff. I ate there twice .. heh, they had green chile!

We just finished our meal at the Rabbit Ear Cafe. My husband and I agree this is the worst meal we've ever had on any of our trips. The worst part about the meal was the excessive use of salt in everything including the guacamole which was so salty we literally couldn't eat it. We had the huevos rancheros. He had the red sauce and I had the green sauce. Both other than being salty, were quite bland. The rice tasted like it'd been cooked in tomato sauce from a can. The beans likewise were flavorless except for salt. We were disappointed since there were so many glowing reviews on yelp and we went out of our way to find this place. We would not recommend this restaurant.

A very pleasant surprise!! Good southwest twist on some cafe favorites. I recommend the sopaburger. Homemade fries.

After spending the night in Clayton, we walked over to the Rabbit Ear Café fro breakfast. My wife and I both had smothered breakfast burritos (green chile and beef). The inside was filled with eggs, hash browns, and onions. I added ham to the inside of mine. Cheese was melted on the top. Very good breakfast and service. We could tell that the place.is a local favorite.

This is a story of extremes. The service was excellent, the salsa, terrible, chips friend in old burnt oil. The green sauce, perhaps the best I have ever had. The casadilla wonderful. The rice terrible and beans crunchy. All and all it was an utterly average meal with highs and lows. Prolly will not be back.

My wife and I visited the Rabbit Ear Cafe en route from Houston to Colorado. We had previously been burned by our food choices along the road in New Mexico and were hesitant to stop. Thanks to Yelp and our hunger, we tried the Rabbit Ear. My wife and I split a grilled steak chopped up with peppers which really hit the spot - can't remember the name of the item. We saw so much on the menu we wanted to try, like the sopapilla burger and green or red chili rellenos. The staff was genuine and friendly which was nice as I am sure much of the business comes from travelers. We plan on making the Rabbit Ear a part of our trip from now on.

Was enthusiastic about this place after reading all the glowing reviews. It started off ok with decent chips and salsa. It went downhill from there. Overdone burger (should have been tipped off by them not asking how we wanted it cooked). They said their chicken fried steak was made in house and as I never had a chicken fried steak that was decent I thought this would be the place to try a decent one finally. Well let's just say I've retired that one as there is obviously no such thing as a good chicken fried steak. This was chewy and stringy and covered in their house specialty chile (apparently that's New Mexico spelling) which was ok, but it was the shiny oily cheese melted on top that put me off the dish on arrival. I'm a trooper though and did try it. I now regret it as I feel awful and my friend who ordered the burger is moaning about how queasy he feels from the fried dough things his burger was served on - and he never complains. Friendly service for sure. Not sure what the fuss about green chile is. It had that corn starch gloppy feel and the red chile tasted like paprika. Again great service and really wanted to love my authentic New Mexican experience, but I didn't. The atmosphere was ok and waitresses very friendly. If you like New Mexican food you might like it. Great friendly service. Ok I think I mentioned that enough. It sucks to feel bad for hating something when the people were so lovely.

Good fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Hometown atmosphere. Great for people who want a taste of country life. Stopped here on the way through back to Texas. Good food and good people. Great prices.

For your first fix of New Mexican food after coming in from Oklahoma or Texas, this place is GREAT! I've had the green chilé cheeseburger and it was excellent, not greasy and nicely zippy chilés. On another trip I had their chicken & red chilé dinner, also excellent. I would recommend the place to anyone.

Very friendly waitresses. We went for breakfast and the food was good, inexpensive and filling. If I ever happened to find myself in Clayton, NM again I would grab breakfast here again.

This is a great place to eat. In fact it's just about the only place in Clayton. Tex-Mex, excellent, lots of families of all ages. Don't get put off, sort of looks like a biker bar from the outside, but this is the real deal. Very nice people, good service, good food, and for us tourists, a good look at the locals. Only drawback: no beer or wine.

Fantastic enchiladas and green chile burgers here. Took a little while to get our food on a Saturday night but the service was pleasant and the food was well worth the wait. Also, some of the best French fries I have had in a long time.

  • Glenda S.

The SopaBurger is THE best burger I have ever had. All the usual suspects are there: lettuce & tomato, cheese, etc. But what makes it unique & addictively delicious are its sopapilla bun, beans hidden under the pattie, guacamole, and in New Mexico you know it's got to be topped with chilis. We passed through town on our way home in Houston, Texas. It was a chance encounter & I'm already trying to find an excuse to drive the 8+ hours to go back!

We just finished eating at The Rabbit Ear Cafe and it was very good. I had the grilled chicken salad and it was filled with good chicken and the Tortilla shell was crisp and good. My husband had the enchiladas and they were very tasty. They have a new location. Be sure and try this cafe

  • Jimbo S.

Five people for $50 including drinks - not bad!!! Excellent relleno, excellent green and red sauce, typical New Mexican food, not Tex-mex. Friendly attentive staff. Three cheers for Lisa who kept our drinks filled and happily replaced an overdone corn dog. Salsa fresh sand garlicky. Chips ok, needed salt. Not too loud which is good. Parking lot needs work but I'm not reviewing a parking lot- just drive carefully.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
