Meh. I really don't know what the fuss is about. We came here for bkfast, at about 11am. (ok, so we slept in). We were one of two couples in the place, and the other ppl were just leaving. "Great!" I thought. "Lots of attention, food hot off the grill, not sitting under a heat lamp." Right? Nope. We (DH and I) both ordered Belgian waffles, a natural choice at a place called the Waffle and Pancake Shoppe. The waffles were definitely hand-made, and they looked REALLY good. But they were barely warm. The only "butter" available was soft margarine in those little bitty plastic cups with peel-back "lids". The waffles were so close to cold that the room-temperature margarine wouldn't melt on them. The waitress came back with some syrup; it was stone-cold, and it congealed with the margarine, looking pretty pathetic and unappetizing. Still, looks aren't everything. So I took a bite. The waffle was "ok", but JUST ok; the oh-so-ordinary taste did not make up for the coldness of it, or the cold syrup, or the unmelted margarine. To top it off, our waitress had to be hunted down and reminded to bring our orange juice--which was simply Minute Maid from a carton (I asked). Oh--and the coffee was fresh and hot, but mediocre tasting and not very strong: ordinary. I would be a lot more forgiving of a lukewarm waffle and forgotten OJ if the place were as bustling as other Yelp reviews led me to expect. But we were the ONLY customers in the place. As the clock approached noon, I expected the place to start filling up with a lunch crowd. But no; when we walked out the door, no one was left in there. The cook and two waitresses were standing cross-armed and idle behind the breakfast bar, and cheerfully thanked us and waved goodbye. I will say that my two eggs were cooked to perfection, and my DH's hash browns were fabulous. But I'm left wondering whether we're even talking about the same restaurant: cold food, airline-sized packs of margarine, reconstituted OJ... Huh? I wouldn't return unless i needed to be bored to tears.

Really great breakfast food. Often standing room only to wait for your seat but it is worth it. They do need to fix their ceiling. Very popular with the locals for a reason! Good Mexican food too...

We were greeted with a smile and a hearty 'good morning' from the owner, George. Seated straight away at about 8:15a on a Monday morning, we checked out the big menu. Pancakes, omelets, waffles, oh my! Super cheap prices. I took the server's recommendation and had the pecan pancakes and my husband ordered the 22nd century omelet. The atmosphere was so friendly, you'd think you were sharing breakfast with all your friends. I'd definitely recommend you eat local over the chains as far as breakfast goes.

I used to like this place, but today was so grossed out by the bathroom, I doubt I will ever come back. There was feces all over the toilet seat. The floors in there were dirty too. Doesn't seem like it's under the same owner anymore. The food wasn't bad overall. Didn't like the bacon or the coffee as well as other places I've been. IHOP has better of both.

Great breakfast! Friendly service with a smile. It seems to be the place the locals come to.

Great little breakfast diner! Good service, large portions, tasty food. I highly recommend it!

Solid food all around and absolutely friendly staff. Our group had the breakfast burrito, pancakes, chicken fried steak and sausage. Not a bad bite to be had and we walked away stuffed along with a very small bill for all the food that was consumed.

Best Breakfast in town! Always good. The wait is well worth it. Enjoy.

Yesterday on our way to Fort Stanton for a guided tour of the fort, we stopped in Alamogordo for breakfast at the Waffle & Pancdake Shoppe. Friendly greeting at our arrival by the staff. Quick and efficient service. My wife had a omelet with hash browns and toast and I had one of the hash brown plates, which were hash browns with ham, mushrooms, onions, and green peppers, all covered with country gravy. I had two eggs on top. Our meals were both excellent. Great breakfast experience.

One of my favorite things about this place? The Waffle & Pancake Shoppe is located right next to a run-of-the-mill boring Denny's. Choose local, it's so much more fun! We stopped at this old fashioned breakfast nook on the way to White Sands and were pleasantly surprised by how good and affordable the food was. I recommend getting their Southern Waffle with the green chili salsa...so tasty. Their biscuits and gravy were pretty good too, and I was happy to see sausage links included on their menu! We also got to meet George at the grill who I don't think heard a word we said, but still shook our hands with a smile and sent us on our way with full and happy bellies. Highlights: -Cheap & tasty -Green Chili Salsa is so freaking good -The menus are hilarious and keep you entertained for quick a bit -In your face Denny's!

This is THE diamond in the rough in Alamogordo. Everyone flocks to Denny's and IHOP, overlooking this place....shame on them. This is where the locals go for breakfast. It's small, and their seating capacity is nowhere near that of thier competitors, but the food is legit. It's like a Waffle House that serves GREAT food! Old school diner type atmosphere. Love it!!!

The place is small, not enough room of you wanted to bring a family or small children. Probably the best local "divey" place in this town and by FAR the best breakfast I've ever had at a decent Price. The waitress had been there 17 years and was extremely knowledgeable about the menu. The cooks are out in the open so you can see your food being made. The green chile burrito is to die for and I couldn't get enough of the biscuits and gravy. You can pretty much get everything as a side and "build your own" breakfast. It's my husband and i's go to breakfast date when we can. It's a must if you're visiting family here. They don't do a military discount.

my favorite breakfast spot! it's locally owned and always busy! be ready for a wait on the weekends, but it's worth it. The whole staff is friendly and always so nice. Our favorite include: George's Big Avalanche Breakfast, Chocolate chip pancakes, and the Swiss Guard. the cinnamon roll warmed up with butter and the shakes are also really great. No matter what you order, you won't be disappointed. Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere. you're family here.

The unofficial capitol of Alamogordo. I highly recommend the Avalanche smothered in "Mexican sauce." STS

Service: we walked in and there was not any place but the bar for us to sit, which we didn't mind because we were super hungry. Anyway the waitress was there in a flash to take drink orders and hand us menus. She was sweet and friendly and got our orders in and out quickly and took care of our checks in a timely manner. Food: the food was a delicious as I had hoped it would be! The pecan waffle was just perfect! The hash browns needed a little salt but otherwise was cooked to perfection, not burnt and not too greasy! I would come back!

Small diner and that's one of its pluses! Great food and I like the excellent service by the waitresses. I like the New Mexico chili breakfast entrees and great place to go for coffee and breakfast. I get there early and don't have to wait

Got kids with hollow legs? Bring them here to start your day before heading to white sands. Classic American style diner, locally owned, good breakfast food. Inexpensive and fast if you get there early. Stuffed kids = quiet kids on road trips.

Greasy diner breakfast, and it's exactly as it should be! The staff is friendly, attentive, and the food comes out quick. If you're in the area and want a decent diner breakfast, this is the spot. It's definitely better and faster then their neighbor.

We were greatest kindly by the former owner. Sat quickly. Our waitress Loretta was a doll. The food was delicious. Homey and comfortable.

Seeing how this place is ALWAYS packed, we thought it would be worth the try. We went once and the wait was 20 minutes, so we trekked over to Ihop instead. We finally went in this morning for breakfast. The food was very disappointing, with complete lack of flavor. I couldn't even eat most of it. The waitress was ok, but going by her patrons right before us leaving her a mere $1 tip, I'd say she must have been less than fabulous. I will say that I have eaten at Denny's, Ihop, and the Waffle & Pancake Shoppe, and WPS does have the best chocolate milk.

One of those awesome hole in the wall family diners. Great food and staff!!!

I'm big on breakfast, so this place is pretty magical for me. I'd go every weekend if I could. The menu is huge, too! So many options. It can take me forever to decide it I want something sweet or savory here - but from waffles to omelettes, everything I've tried here has been good. The staff is funny and friendly. Like others have mentioned, there's usually a wait on the weekends - but it's worth it!

Ate here once about 10 years ago and wasn't terribly impressed back then, but went back again this morning and had a dramatically better experience. Arrived at 0930 on a Sunday and the place was about 75% full, maybe 25 people altogether. I was allowed to sit in a booth and was quickly offered a cup of coffee. Coffee was hot & strong, just the way I like it. They have a huge menu selection, and I eventually settled on a 22d Century omelet with a side order of SOS dumped on top of the whole plate. My food arrived piping-hot less than 5 minutes later and everything was perfectly cooked. It was a big plate, but I had no trouble plowing through it. Two cups of coffee, an omelet, and a side of SOS ran me $11...add a nice tip and I was out of there for $15. Very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food I ate. By the time I was done, they had filled every seat and table in the place and there was a line of about 12 people waiting for empty seats. A joint that popular has got to be doing something right!

This was one of the first places that I tried when I got to Alamogordo. The staff are busy but friendly, and the food is good. Even though I sit at the bar, I usually have to wait a bit, but it is worth it. The chorizo and eggs are wonderful. They are prepared in a different way than what I am used to - instead of scrabling the eggs and chorizo together, they are cooked separately, then chopped together and plated after a bit more cooking. They come with beans or shredded potatoes. It gets busy after 9am, so you can expect 5-25 minutes of wait (depending on your party size).

always a wait to get in after 8:30 am on the weekends.. favorite place of the locals.. best dish was when they had their Chile Verde breakfast. With the Pantry in Santa Fe, this is the best place for Huevos Rancheros.

  • Karen S.

I love the food here! It is always good, the service is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. The downside is the wait on the weekends. It is very popular among the locals. Whether you want pancakes or huevos rancheros, breakfast or lunch, you can find something for everyone here!

Great greasy breakfast after a night of drinking in a diner type setting. Serves verde salsa with your order and has some kick. Friendly, attentive staff. Concern for people/patrons as there was an auto accident outside the diner in which paramedics were called.

Decent breakfast, certainly better, more interesting and more options then Denny's or iHop. The Chorizo and egges was pretty yummy. Great service, the kitchen was very fast despite a full house.

Passing thru & very hungry, found this place on yelp. Quick service, excellent food. Highly recommend. Had a veggie omelette & 2 egg breakfast. All the food coming out of this kitchen looked awesome. Definitely will be back next time were in the area!

This was the worst meal we've had from a Yelp choice. We were the only customers in the restaurant for an afternoon lunch. The cooks managed to mess up both our orders. Not only did the cooks not apologize, they gave us attitude. Needless to say, we will never return.

I brought my brother and is girlfriend here, we had a great time! The servers were so nice & the food was great. There was so much to choose from! I had a hard time deciding. But I believe I ended up getting something with a bunch of things in it. Needless to say, I didn't eat it all. The coffee was okay, we did have to wait awhile before the server came back after dropping off our food. All in all it was still a great place and we really enjoyed ourselves :)

This is definitely the best breakfast spot in town. The staff is awesome and the food is incredible. When I was deployed, this was the only restaurant that I craved while I was gone.

since i moved here a month and a half ago, i have been driving past this restaurant wishing and drooling...because any place that has a name like 'waffle and pancake' has such promise to be something great. my sister came for a visit and i finally got to cross the threshold from dreaming to reality...and i definitely was not disappointed. the menu is entertaining, the waitress was even more so, and our breakfasts were the type of breakfasts you hope for at a little diner, but better. the actual quality of the ingredients of the food were what was most surprising. my sister ordered the butt burner omelet.....they used FRESH jalapenos! the bread they used for wheat toast was not the 99 cent special at the only grocery store in town...it was the good quality stuff you rarely treat yourself to! i cannot wait to return to actually order pancakes....or anything else off the menu. it's a pretty fantastic little spot! we had such a great time at this restaurant....if you are just passing through or if you live here, i would highly recommend giving it a look-see.

An excellent choice for breakfast that offers spacious room and great food. The store appears small on the outside, but it is surprisingly very comfortable once you walk in. The staff are very friendly and most importantly the food is delicious. I highly encourage everyone to eat here before you leave Alamogordo, NM. My favorite foods they offer are the waffles, pancakes, and omelets which are cooked in view behind their counter.

My wife and I stopped here one weekend morning at the last minute for breakfast. The place was packed and we ended up sitting at the counter right by the cook. That turned out to be a great surprise because we ended up talking to the cook and a couple sitting next to us about a movie that had been recently filmed in the restaurant with Sean Penn. The setting and conversation just added to whole experience. We ordered your standard breakfast with eggs, ham, toast, pancakes, etc. between us both and it was great. The servings were a perfect size, the food tasted homemade as opposed to being from a mix, and it all had a great flavor. Great local place to stop for breakfast!

Having lived in Georgia and now living on the west coast, this place made me very happy. Had a southern Waffle House charm without the grease and some darn good homemade green chile salsa to give it a New Mexican twist. Girlfriend had a vegetarian omelette (of course) and I had eggs, bacon, and hash browns. We split a waffle... We can't NOT get a waffle! Service was exceptionally nice and even the other customers were friendly. I don't know why anyone would go to the ihop down the street. This is a definite return for me if I'm back in town.

Pancakes! You can substitute pancake for toast, and it's crowded for a reason. Lovely locals with bouffant hair, gangs of retired Air Force fellas, families passing through to White Sands. Hustle-bustle atmosphere.
