I give it 3 stars because the first time I ate there it was great. The second time, not so good - I was sick for a couple of days afterwards along with someone else who ate there the same day as me. The food was good, I just got sick from it.

Wow, I think the other reviewers are a bit harsh. Alamogordo is a dinky town that celebrated the opening of Chili's. Doner Grill is super convenient to the base and is a simple lunch diner. It's not expensive and the food is made to order. I had the basic lamb doner and enjoyed the simple experience. The diner and the bathrooms were clean. Who is their competition? Popeye's, McD's, BK, etc. This is way better, and they're a Mom & Pop stand.

Much better this time. Did enjoy the beef Doner tray...

Unlike other reviewers, I thought the food was A-OK. The Doner Pita was flavorful and not as greasy as a typical US-style gyro. I asked for extra salad instead of fries, and they were happty to accomodate. Everything was clean and service prompt. A nice break from the food court or fast-food joints. Full of people from the AFB, including German personnel.

Have been once for lunch. The food is good for fast food German. Fast service. If you get the Doner plate, it comes with hot sauce on it which was quite strange...also the white sauce which we are used to cucumber yogurt sauce is sort of mayonnaise like with dill which does not really go with the meat and it is poured on everything on the plate. The schnitzel is not really good unless you like thin premade deepfried stuff. Would not order that again. The fries are YUMMY--the music was a little CRAZY the day we went. If I had been blindfolded, I might have thought I was in a Disco. I am sure the air force dudes like it though. They are located in a strange out of the way place if you are not in the air force and we would recommend calling before going to make sure they are open before making the trek. Not open on weekends....interesting concept for a restaurant. Now they are open on Saturdays as of Mid may 2011 UPDATE!! Have been reading on their Facebook page about all of the new stuff they have. Looking forward to going back again in a couple of months when we are in the area! Sounds like some good new stuff on the menu!

fan freaking tastic. i was starving having fasted for a day in order to do lab work at the clinic... then i came across this gem of a place. on a paleo diet so i had to abstain from the pita and fries, they gladly substituted more meat and salad for me. 6 dollars = a huge plate of heavenly gyro meat and salad with tzaziki sauce x_x... so good.. i got another plate and tipped four bucks. GO HERE.

After having lived in Germany and frequented many Doner places regularly, I was happy to finally have one that reminded me why I loved them so much. Coming back from Germany, my husband and I talked about opening one and then this one popped up. Initially, we went and it was lackluster but many places have growing pains. They lamb is great... the sauces and frites are just like we had in Germany. I've had several things on the menu and they are consistently very good. So happy that it's still open since many places that open up here in Alamogordo don't last. Keep up the good work....we will be regulars!

I have been lucky to have been in Europe, whenre i had these in England and Germany. So for Alamogordo, although not up to European standards, its a pleasant change from the local grind. In fact,I applaud the owners to opening up something new and different. The doner meat is tasty, but have not been impressed in the pita shell. Was a little dry and not tasty. I inadvertently ordered the wrap, which is basically in a giant tortilla. However, the food portion ion the wrap was massive, and although i ate it all, i should have stopped sooner. :-). Tasty. The normal version, although big, is not too big. The place is small, and a little difficuclt to get too, pending the direction you are coming from (easy from Alamogordo, hard from Las Cruces). Always been clean for me, but I have always had take-out. So for those that havent tried it before, would reccommend giving it a try. For those experienced eaters, its passable. Just like Korean food, sometimes you have to settle for what you have in the area.

I spent a couple of years in Europe, I know doner. This place gives a great effort. While it seems the meat is beef and not lamb, the kabab flavor is still excellent. Price is comparably decent to Mediterranean joints. I suggest stopping in and supporting this local establishment. Bring some malt vinegar, they don't have any

We ate here for the first time and will not be going back. The menu is very limited and fairly expensive for what is basically fast food ($20 for two meals). I had the doner plate which was okay, but certainly not great (especially compared to doner plates I have had in Europe or the Middle East). My wife ordered the "new" menu item - schnitzel - which was terrible. It was a frozen schnitzel that was heated in a fryer and tasted similar to cardboard. The tables were fairly dirty too and there were flies inside. There are only about five tables and the staff don't wipe them down between customers. Overall, we thought it was way too expensive for the low quality of the food.

So the place is small, not fancy, and usually staffed with two people. Hasn't been open long, and has that hole-in-the-wall feel, but that's usually where you get the best food. I have never been to Germany or Turkey, but I've had doners in Korea and Japan and these are decent by comparison. I am sure the German recipe they use differs slightly than the doners I've had. The give you TONS of food. Seriously, two people would be stuffed with one Doner Plate. The fries are awesome. Good enough to eat once in a while.

You can have simple food and still keep it flavorful. This place, I'm truly sorry to say, doesn't do that. See, if you can't tell what meat you're eating, that's bad. The protein tasted like nothing, and the breading was just as devoid of anything. the fries were dry, something I've never experienced before, and they didn't even salt those. The only thing worth biting twice was the pita bread that I'm almost certain they store bought. Now, this food wasn't so bad that I had to spit it out, but it did give me a stomachache just minutes later. I will never recommend a restaurant that doesn't know the basics of putting spices on their food. They might as well be a cafeteria for people with no tongue that enjoy charred french fries.

Is it good? Yeah. Is it as good as I've had in Bremen, Hamburg or Munich? No. Is it the best doener kebab in southern New Mexico? I sure hope so. From the outside, a place like this doesn't make sense in Alamogordo. But when you realize that Holloman AFB has many, many German Air Force personnel on base, it does. On this particular visit, there were four of them, plus the German working behind the counter, and zero other English speakers. As a German speaker who didn't expect to be speaking German on this trip, I took advantage of the situation and ordered in German. The guy was...less than impressed. But it worked. Overall I was less than impressed by my service. But whatever. My doener plate took quite a while. Like 10+ minutes. At dinner time, the place is dead, so I assume everything is just made to order. I hope and assume it's busier at lunch! Said doener plate was ordered "ohne tomaten, ohne zwiebeln, mit salat" and came as such. With fries. I also got a coke. It all totaled a bit over $9. Not cheap...but you're paying for uniqueness amongst the Alamogordo dining scene. The food was quite good! Not amazing, not the best, but way better than I would expect to find out here. From town it's a bit of a hike, but worth it to avoid the mediocrity of restaurants around here.

Got a late start on lunch and decided to try the Doner Grill based mainly on its proximity to Holloman Air Force Base, where I work. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and freshness of the ingredients used in my Doner Pita. The Pita was quite large and could possibly feed two adults. The fries were hot and lightly salted. I got hot sauce in my pita and I recommend it. All told, the pita, fries, and a bottled Coke Zero set me back $9.40.

This is the only legitimately interesting restaurant in Alamogordo. What you have here is a German woman - part of the larger-than-normal German population in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico - opened up a restaurant based upon a popular Turkish import to Deutschland. It's the gyro-type meat you may be familiar with, but the German spin includes sticking it inside a flatbread and shoving a side salad on top of it. Since we are two countries deep on this culinary inter-mingling, I would encourage you to try it just like ze Germans intended, but if you wanted to throw some Southwestern United States in there, they offer a version with salsa. This does not taste good, partly because the salsa is Pace and partly because it's SALSA ON DONER. Still, a small window of cultural importance has opened up in the middle of the desert, and it's worth checking out.
