La Mezzeluna is an Italian restaurant on Witherspoon Street in Princeton. This was my second time at La Mezzaluna and the only reson I went was because I couldn't get a reservation at 3 other restaurants I tried. I had remembered the food as being decent not great, but this time I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was, but more on that in a minute. I was meeting Kedar and Swati for dinner. I don't get to see them as much since they moved closer to the city so we occassionally get together for dinner, After numerous attempts at reservations elsewhere I suggested we go to La Mezzeluna. Neither Kedar nor I could come up with any other real alternatives. I managed to get reservations at 7. When I got there the place was packed and when we left people were waiting in line for a table. I guess the place is more popular than I realised. I guess I have my finger on the pulse of things in Princeton! I got there right on time and was greeted by someone in chef's whites. Was he the chef and if he was what was he doing greeting me at the door and taking me to my table? The restaurant itself is pretty tired looking. They have a couple of tables at the entrance whihc they kept warm with a space heater yesterday. Then they have a bunch of tables down the center of the restaurant which just seem uncomfortable and in the way. I would not want to sit there. They have a bunch of booths along the wall which is where we ended up and that was fine. The place is in serious need of a makeover. Our waiter was a pretty friendly and helpful chap. He explained the specials and gave us plenty of time to decide. The last time I was here I had ordered the broccoli rabe and sausage special appetizer. It's one of those things like pork belly for me. If I see it on the menu I order it. Unfortunately it was one of the worst renditions of broccoli rabe and sausage I had ever had. It felt like it had just been thawed. This time though we did well with our appetizers. We shared a crabcake with pesto sauce and portobello mushroon stuffed with sausage. The crab cake was ok, though sauce was good and the mushroom was pretty good. For the main course both Kedar and I went for the night's special - linguine (and the waiter actually thought he had to explain what linguine was to us. Did we look that clueless? Maybe Kedar but me?) with lobster, scallops, clams, mussels and shrimps in a red sauce. This dish was outstanding. The seafood was fresh, and cooked perfectly. The sauce itself was light and just right. It did not overwhelm the seafood at all. The shrimp was sweet and lobster and scallops were just perfect. Last time I had the pork osso bucco with risotto for my main course. That too was good, but very heavy. The seafood was the way to go this time. For dessert I ordered the tiramisu which too was very good. The place is BYO so I had taken along a really good Australian cabernet sauvignon. The chef made a reappearance with our check. He dropped it at our table and went off. I wonder if he really was the chef, I was apprehensive about going to La Mezzeluna with its tired interior and average food from my previous visit but this after last nights experience I'm going back. foodielifestyle.com

I went here with a group of 8 for a friend's birthday, and we had an excellent time. When we arrived for our reservation, our table was ready with the menus sitting on the table. I was happy to see that they were prepared for our arrival, and we didn't have to wait at all. A great start. Our server (William) was extremely friendly, helpful, and kind the entire night. We always had our water glasses full, and the service was definitely outstanding. We started off with a stuffed mushroom special and the calamari. The calamari was lightly fried and not too greasy. Both appetizers were very good. For our entrees, we all had something different. I had the trenette, linguini in a tomato basil sauce with vegetables. The linguini was cooked perfectly al dente and was quite delicious. My only complaint was that my dish was a little cold as I was one of the first people to receive my meal, but I imagine this would not be the case if I went with a smaller group. My friends had the chicken marinara, rigatoni, pork ossobucco, pappardelle, and fettuccine. Though I did not get to try everyone's dish, they all seemed pleased and content with what they ordered. I would strongly recommend this restaurant as the food was outstanding and the service even better.

I had never been to this place because I make my own homemade pasta and usually can't justify going somewhere and spending a lot of money for something I can prepare better at home for a lot less. I went here because some colleagues in town for a conferences wanted to go. I was excited when I saw that they had a pasta wild wild boar on the menu, so I ordered that. There was not very much meat served with the pasta, however, and the sauce was not that great. I can't say I'd really recommend this place.

I needed a restaurant reservation for a Saturday night and La Mezzaluna had availability and yelp reviews I read were generally positive. The waiter was on the ball - very attentive and provided a good overview of the menu and the night's specials. I had the chicken tartufo which was a bit on the salty side and the chicken was a bit overcooked but no real complaints. The rest of the foursome had the seafood fra diavolo which all seemed to enjoy. They were able to adjust the "heat" so the food was enjoyable and tasty for all. It would have been nice to have the lobster shelled as an option as no one wanted to splatter over their nice clothes. Speaking of dress, I was surprised at the super casual dress of some of the patrons but they were at least clean and neat. Overall, a nice place but we would consider the many other choices Princeton offers before returning.

I have been open minded and dined at La Mezzaluna three different times. Each time came away with the same impressions - overpriced, bland poorly prepared food, and terrible service. Again they survive on location, not on quality or value. It appears soo promising and I want to like this restaurant. But each time I am left very disappointed in both the service and food. Try Sotto on Nassau St, not quite as fancy, but the Italian food is much better. The stellar review below is obviously biased, since he does admit they were with friends of the owner. Much different experience when you are a nobody.

The food here was good, though not great by any stretch of the imagination. Lunch portions were a bit on the small side. It'd be a three-star venue if not for two things: 1) The service was very good. Our waiter was polite, attentive, and helpful, but not intrusive. I'll admit that the place was nearly empty, so few other tables competed for his attention, but he was still very good. 2) The semi-sweet chocolate fritters desert was amazing. Possibly the best desert i've ever had. Yum.

The service was fine. the meals were good. BYOB is a plus. Just thought that the specials were a bit overpriced. This isn't NYC!The chicken Parm special was great, but the price was a bit over the top.

I loved that they readily accepted our group of 9 for dinner which was awesome. No other restaurant in the area was so accomodating. They filet the fish at the table which is fun. Acoustics aren't that good. There was a large party there that really dominated the air space and made it a little hard to have a conversation. It's ByOB which is interesting. I'd suggest they make that known before you sit down so you can grab drinks before you get settled in. My food (calamari and pumpkin ravioli) were actually amazing. Sooooo yummy!! I gave 3 stars because of the 9 of us that had dinner more than half had a bad food experience. For the price they might want to step it up just a notch.

I'm a regular to this place when in town for Princeton alumni activities. It's just a short walk from the campus and is perfect for a quiet dinner. There's no corkage fee at the restaurant, and there's a bottle shop just a few doors down should you forget your favorite bottle of wine. The staff here is great! From the hostess to server and even the chef that comes out to check on his patrons. Every member of the staff is attentive. The pumpkin ravioli is always a favorite and they make this gnocchi with white truffle oil thats wonderful! The risottos here are always good (my boyfriend and I always have a hard time choosing!) and the veal ossobuco is wonderful! If you have room for dessert, try the hazelnut gelato - its out of this world! :)

Food is amazing, service is even better. Not much ambience... there is a constant din in the room, which I like because it gives it a lively, energetic vibe. All the apps we got were excellent and my husband got the Osso Bucco, which literally fell off the bone. My fish was pretty good-- no complaints but nor was it spectacular. Server was very attentive and knowledgeable. Love that it's BYOB. Would definitely go back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
