Fun place in quaint downtown Whitefish. Downstairs there's a brewery tasting room, and upstairs is a bar. The brewery is the tallest building in Whitefish, and they've done a nice job creating an airy, modern, welcoming space. Lots of fun old ads and bar memorabilia on the walls. Excellent beer, and totally a steal compared to San Francisco, where I live. I like the IPA and the Black Lager best. Game room in the back has skee-ball! (Though I kind of wish they'd hook up the power so it makes all the fun skee-ball noises). They have a few sandwich choices. Didn't try the food, though, nor did we see anyone else eating here -- there are so many other amazing restaurants in town. They sell growlers and bottled / canned beer to go. It's a little tricky to find it -- the sign says Black Star, and the place with the goat sign that says Great Northern Bar and Grill is actually a different bar and is across the street from the brewery.

This was another stop on my honeymoon adventure in Montana. I probably never would've known about this place had it not been for a coworker who came here during a business trip. The setup inside is pretty basic, it's really just a tasting room. There's a bar and I think there may have been some couches around also. To start things off you get a free taste of any beer. I wanted to try everything so we ordered a sampler. Even though we came here in the spring, they still has their winter beer on tap which was called Snow Ghost. It was a chocolate lager so it wasn't quite as bitter as some other dark beers. The one beer I was very curious about was the Huckleberry Lager. One thing I learned on this trip is that Montana loves huckleberries. They put it in coffee, candy, pie, you name it. I really didn't think I would like this beer because honestly it sounded kind of girlie. Well I was totally wrong and it ended up being my favorite. The fruit taste wasn't overpowering and everything about it was refreshing. We asked the bartender what kind of distribution they had and he said right now they only sell in Montana and didn't have any plans to expand. I wish we could've brought some home with us but we flew so that wasn't possible. I hope one day they'll expand so I can get some more Huckleberry Lager.

Black Star sells great local beer and awesome t-shirts for the prospecting tourist. We went on a Tuesday evening during the Whitefish farmer's market and were delighted to find a bluegrass band playing in the corner. We stood on the balcony with our Going to the Sun IPAs and Hellroaring Amber Lagers and basked in the warm afternoon while listening to the music. The service was so-so - when my sister walked toward us with two beers in her hands someone stopped and asked if they could order from her because no waiters were around - but the bartenders knew their beer facts and everyone was pretty happy and laid-back. It isn't the popular local joint that Great Northern (across the street) is, but it's nice and open with big windows and I would suggest it for an afternoon draught.

this once independent brewery used to be awesome. they had a tasting room where you could drink for free on fridays and they even had a PC set up with free intenet access so you could get drunk and send e-mail to your friends. then the Stroh's company bought them and everything changed. for the worse. now they 1) check id, 2) charge for beers and 3) have no computer for me. in review: down-home, independent breweries that give me free stuff = [this is good] greedy corporations = [this is bad] JCTSFR: 1.19
