Delicious ice cream. Can't beat it. There's not much more to say...check it out for yourself! You know the place is good when people will wait in line during the winter for ice cream!

Come for the ice cream, stay for the rest. Spunky service, old-fashioned chocolate dip, and extensive seating heavily outweigh the draw of Big Dipper's actual ice cream. After being given almost every flavor as a sample (shoutout to our uber-enthusiastic scooper), maple walnut reigned supreme. The Keebler cones have nothing on Sweet Peaks', but the chocolate dip motivated us to persevere anyway. Also, spoiler alert: the flavor sign which features "Mexican" on one line followed by "Chocolate" on the next line is actually "Mexican Chocolate" on two separate lines. Not as exciting.

Big Dipper is just an awesome place with awesome ice cream. We were in town spending a few days for a U of M college tour with my daughter and found the Big Dipper on the first night..... we went all 4 nights in town. The ice cream is just awesome, I had the Huckleberry the first night and it was fantastic. I had the Maple Walnut the second then back to the Huckleberry the last 2 nights. I don't know if it is the best ice cream I've ever had, I don't really pay that much attention to ice cream, but I can tell you I haven't had better. Huge portions, just soft enough to eat while being cold enough to hold up to a leisurely pace on a hot evening. Perfect. The service is great, those guys hustle, but when you get up to the window we never felt rushed. The line was always long, that is consistent in the reviews and it was consistent for us. But another thing consistent with the other reviews, is that the line moves fast. There were maybe 30 people in front of me one night and it was no problem. That of course goes back to the hustle of the staff. Sitting outside in the summer was no problem, even though there was a big line, we always got a table to sit, leisurely enjoy the ice cream, talk about the day and people watch. I do have to wonder what they do in the winter and how this works out, guess I'll have to swing through and find out. Here's the main reason why I gave this place 5 stars for me and my family. A place like this is often something greater than the sum of its parts. The ice cream is awesome, the service is awesome, the location near campus is awesome, but it is more than that. The vibe is great, you see friends running into each other and having a good time, you sit outside eating ice cream on a hot summer night..... how could it get any better than that? Don't think it could. Thanks Big Dipper, you helped my daughter fall in love with Missoula.

There's almost no reason to write a review for Big Dipper because everyone in Missoula already knows about it! Be careful, during warm summer nights the line can be long but the ice cream is worth it! Personally, my favorite favorite flavor is the Mint Cookies and Cream but every flavor I have sampled has been delightful!

We waited in line maybe 10-15 min on a spring day for this. I had tangerine sorbet and yellow cake in a waffle cone. I also sampled the grape nuts and strawberry. The sorbet was full, and flavorful without being icey or cheap tasting like a slurpee. It was tart and tangy without being sour and sweetened without being cloying. The yellow cake really softened the tang with it's rich creaminess. They had lemon custard and I'm sure that would've been really great too. Big Dip was a hit on the Hip Strip. Also bonus star for watching an awkward first date unfold in front of us.

First of all, (disclaimer) I am from Portland where fancy Ice cream is a kind of our thing, (Salt and Straw, Ruby Jewel etc...) So it would be pretty difficult to earn five stars from me for Ice cream. However I am a BIG fan of homemade ice cream. We went to Big Dipper Ice Cream in Billings and I didn't know it was a (local) chain until we saw it again in Missoula. The Billings location is newer and they are MUCH more generous with their scoops (almost double, just sayin'). The flavor of the ice cream is good, not awesome but good. The flavors are fun, from Coffee to Mexican chocolate to black licorice. I am giving them the three stars (A-OK) rating for being homemade. The loose a star for service that was not awesome, we didn't wait long as others have said, but they kinda acting like they were doing us a favor by serving us. And minus one star for the size of the scoops which left a lot to be desired (literally). If you're in town and want better than average homemade ice cream, I would definitely choose BD Ice cream, but I wouldn't make an overwhelming effort to get her if it's super inconvenient.

Must try this place! The staff is extremely friendly and their prices are reasonable. They have a great assortment of flavors, forcing me to sample a good amount of them before I could pick my winners of the evening. They have your classics (Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry) and your usuals (Peanut Butter, Banana, Mint, Oreo, etc), but then you get so some of the flavors that really stood out: Huckleberry, Cardamom, & Raspberry Amaretto Chip. I elected for a homemade waffle cone with two scoops of ice cream, one part Huckleberry and the other Raspberry Amaretto Chip. And the rest is, well... In my belly.

When I first came to Missoula to visit a potential grad school, I went to Big Dipper. I had the white mint oreo. When I made my decision and moved to Missoula 3 months later, I had the mexican chocolate after a hot move in day. After a stressful day of grad classes, my new friends and I split a Super Nova (6 scoops of ice cream! 6!) 3 ways. I'm sure there's nothing I can tell you about Big Dipper that hasn't already been said in 80+ reviews, except to concur with everyone else. One year into my grad program, I'm a total addict. I bring every visitor here! On a hot summer night the line can be 30 people deep, but that's ok, it takes a long time to pick a flavor anyway! And then you get up there and see the 4-5 special flavors, which totally derail your choice anyway (Coldsmoke ice cream is great, so are all the seasonal choices). So whether you're old or new in town, stop by for a scoop. The experience is definitely Missoula. We're a town of ice cream fanatics, and Big Dipper feeds the addiction!

I will preface this review with the fact that I am lactose intolerant... Day one in Missoula Montana and I was feeling like having a sweet treat. I decided to go on yelp to see what some of the locals had to say. Top of my list came big dipper ice cream shop so I thought -- when in Rome do as the locals do. Now, normally I don't eat ice cream very often because it usually leaves me very gassy and uncomfortable. However I've noticed that when I eat high-quality ice cream I don't experience the same effect. For my first time at the big dipper I decided to go with a single waffle cone of vanilla Reese's. It was absolutely delightful. It wasn't overly sweet, the portion was generous, it was the perfect balance between vanilla, peanut, and chocolate, and best of all is that it didn't make my stomach go berserk! I ate my ice cream and waited in anticipation for that uncomfortable feeling and it never came. Second night in Missoula Montana and I happen to have an early dinner which was also very delightful and it was getting late so I decided to go for another scoop of ice cream. When I got there the line was down the corner but they have three windows so it moves quickly. Before I knew it it was time for me to order and I hadn't even looked at the menu. I glanced at it quickly and the two that stuck out were the mint Oreo and the walnut something- I can't remember what it was. I decided F - it I am having a double tonight and I will pay the consequences later. Again I got a waffle cone and my two scoops of ice cream. The portion was ginormous! I don't think I've ever eaten that much ice cream in my life in one sitting, but it was worth every bite! I even bought a T-shirt for my husband since he wasn't there to be able to experience the delicious ice cream with me. In sum, great place, friendly staff, and delicious out of this world ice cream. The prices are reasonable and they have a great outdoor sitting area where you and a group of friends can hang out and enjoy your sweet treat. This is definitely a neighborhood gem. Congratulations Missoula Montana you have a winner!

Tasty ice cream, and very friendly and fast service! Definitely a must try while in Missoula! While we stuck with more basic flavors, they also had several unique flavors fort hose who like that. A friend of ours loved the black licorice flavor.

So this is my third time eating here its amazing ice cream. The service to really fast, and the people are outgoing. We showed up around 5pm the line was non existent even though there parking lot was completely full, they had our ice cream done within a few minutes of ordering the place was clean. Only thing I wish is this place tried to do hamburgers I know with the quality of there deserts they would be amazing.

You might not think so if you're new in town, but Big Dipper is THE place to go for ice cream if you're in the area, so much so that when my family gets together we've been known to go here every day during our visit. Don't be fooled by their lack of indoor seating and the relatively small size of their shop: these guys really know what they're doing. Their homemade ice cream has appeared on national news and been featured in a couple travel articles and I definitely understand why. They offer a nice menu with a range of ice cream flavors - your basics, some fruity ones, some seasonal ones, a few sorbets, and some oddball ice creams that reflect local tastes (I'm looking at you huckleberry!). You can get one or multiple scoops on a cone - mixing flavors is just fine! - or a small sundae with a range of toppings, or a big sundae with a range of toppings, or a small or big sundae with a brownie and a range of toppings or milkshakes...basically these guys will let you get whatever combination you want, and even the oddball combinations have proven to taste pretty darn good. The best part though? You can buy entire quarts and pints of this deliciousness to take home with you. We once bought two or three cartons of their vanilla and (I believe) eggnog ice cream for Thanksgiving and combined with the pie we had at home, it was pretty divine. I can't recommend Big Dipper enough. If the line is long, just get in it and wait your turn. Seriously. The staff will move things along pretty quickly and it is ABSOLUTELY worth it, whether it's the middle of summer or the dead of winter. (Yes, my family has gone here for ice cream in the dead of winter. Shush!)

If you are passing thru Missoula you have got to stop here. It's a small shack and the eating area/queue for service is in a bare lot. A covered eating area / tent or something like that would improve the setting but I still can't lower my rating for that. There were SOOOOOO many wonderful flavours of ice cream and sorbet and they say homemade which made me much more comfortable as well that the product would be fresh and well tended. Four of us ordered a range of scoops and sundaes which totaled about $4.50 each but I think a single scoop of ice cream is only a couple bucks or so. Mine was a scoop each of grapefruit and mandarin sorbet. YUM!

  • Victoria G.

Pretty good ice cream - but also a lot of hype. Worth a visit but I'm not 100% sold on this being the best ice cream in Missoula. Try local flavors like huckleberry to get the full experience! Lines can be long so go during off times.

I have had much better ice cream, it's not worth the money at all. You would be better off going to a store and getting Ben and Jerry's. But,,,, to support the locals I do stop in once in a blue moon if the lines aren't long.

  • Clarissa C.

I'm not from Missoula and thought I'd try a known historic local ice cream spot. A bit disappointed that 1) they ran out of waffle cones. 2) the line was a bit long, but was willing to wait to see what the hype was all about... the line did move fairly fast. Maybe it was the poor choice selection on our part but my bf and I were not overly impressed with the Mexican chocolate and huckleberry lemon cake. The Mexican chocolate was way more cinnamony than chocolatey. And the huckleberry lemon cake was more lemony than huckleberry...

Big Dipper oh how I love thee... How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Black licorice yummy yummy in my tummy! Bubble gum yum. Vanilla and Reese's mmmmm. Green tea oh yeah. I have been regularly attending this temple of ice cream since I arrived in zoola. I have been passing by it since 2010 and sometimes the urge to pullover takes me to their ice cream of love delivery window. It is no wonder I am not as big as a house. Or maybe I am... Ice cream and me go way back and perhaps you could call me a connoisseur. But hell who isn't and if you aren't you should be. I obviously recommend this place. Check it out and if your timing is right you could be the only one in line.

I mean, how can you go wrong with ice cream right? Well, this place can't - it's freaking delicious!!! My husband and I went twice during our 4-day Missoula visit. I tried the lemon sorbet, yellow cake, huckleberry, and white mint oreo. He had vanilla with reeses and eggnog (they were having a "Christmas in July" theme for the specials at the time). We loved all of it - the yellow cake is to-die-for, the lemon is super refreshing, the huckleberry is unique and delightful, and the white mint oreo had huge chunks of oreos in it. The homemade waffle cones are the BOMB - don't even try to get any other kind, these are the best I've ever had! Like I said, we went here 2 nights out of 4 during our visit and probably would have had dessert there every night if I had discovered it sooner. I don't even know what the prices were because my husband paid and I didn't CARE! You can't put a price on homemade waffle cones. You just can't.

This place is great! They're practically famous in Missoula, and I've never been there without seeing a long line of people--even in the dead of winter. Big Dipper makes their own ice cream, and they sell it all over town, but nothing is more fun than going out for a cone. Always try the special flavors!

Saw this place on GMA last year while on vacation but no close enough to try. Now we are so we stopped by on a hot evening to try. Line up wasnt bad and was fast. I thought there would be more flavor selections then there was but the huckleberry was great and so was the peach habenaro. Im not sure why the other poster made off like it was expensive. I think it was priced right. Good flavor and interesting flavor combos, might try it once more before we head back home.

Fun place and brings back memories. Lines look long but move quickly. The employees are working non stop and are pleasant. I have tried most flavors and never had a bad one. You get a lot for your money.

This ice cream is amaze-balls! It doesn't look like much, but the homemade ice cream was creamy deliciousness on a cone. I had the mexican chocolate, waffle cone. After scooping the ice cream into the cone, they dipped the whole thing in hardening chocolate-OMG, IT WAS GOOD! My mom had the "co-co-nuts" (coconut ice cream in a cone, then dipped in chocolate, and rolle in nuts) it was also super delic. Although there were a million people there, we got through the lengthy line in about 5 minutes (great service). I will definitely go again!

Big Dipper is the spot! Generally long line that moves incredibly fast with dozens of good flavors to choose from. I happened to be in town in the middle of summer and even at dusk, this was the place to be. Reasonably priced, hefty homemade ice cream. Got myself a Maple Walnut, just the right amount of sweet and a bit nutty. Felt like the whole town was there that night to enjoy the beautiful weather, which made the ambiance all the more warming. I wish I had the opportunity to try their smoothies, but maybe next time I'm in town. Recommending to all.

Anybody who has been driving around Missoula around 7 o'clock at night in the summertime knows this place is always packed! Their ice cream is the best around and i love getting old fashioned chocolate milkshakes from here. The people are great, and it is conveniently located on higgins where alot of people walk to go downtown. Love this place!

Amazing! I had a suger come with white mint oreo ice cream dipped in chocolate sprinkles. My friends had a strawberry sake and the same white mint oreo I had. We loved it all. The wait was long, but worth in the end. This would be a great summer stop, especially if you're on vacation.

The salted caramel sauce is killer. Have been in town 5 days and had dessert there or had their ice cream at local restaurants 4 times. It was even fun waiting in line on a warm Summer evening. I liked the mint oreo with the caramel sauce. Yummmmmmm.

Ask a Yelp Whisperer Question of the Day (QOTD) September 20, 2012 Q: Hey YW, I'm an SF ice cream expert. I practically "discovered" Bi-Rite, back in the day. And please don't get me started on Humphry Slocombe. So I know my stuff. What can a measly Montana town like Missoula possibly offer me that I haven't already tasted? Seriously. I want to know. Make my day, baby! Jack S. , from SOMA. A: Don't take this the wrong way. But you don't know Jack, Jack. You think that it's all been done already by the Bay Area. And that's just not true. Come to Missoula, to the Big Dipper. It's no secret. I mean, they've done a spread in Sunset Magazine, and it's got a ton of Yelp reviews by Montana standards. Why? Great ice cream, obviously. What's Zootown got that the others have not? How about a $3.50 double scoop of huckleberry and cardamom? Yes, that's right. Huckleberry. And cardamom. Snap. Try finding that combination in the Mission. Or maybe you're into their Cold Smoke ice cream, using Kettlehouse microbrewed beer from literally down the street. Malty, caramel goodness. Beer and ice cream. Get used to it. That's how we roll under the Big Sky, baby. Salted caramel is so 2007. Made in Montana means more than you know, Jack. There's a lot of great ice cream out there, my friend. You just need the courage to find it.

I had my first Big Dipper ice cream summer last year during my visit in Missoula. And I am definitely going back again to get my bubble gum big dipper this coming July. The line is long, but move pretty fast. A must have if you are in town.

As a Seattle resident, I'm quite familiar with Molly Moon's ice cream. What you many not know is that Molly got her start at The Big Dipper! On my latest visit to Missoula, I got to try Big Dipper ice cream from a truck and from the shop itself. Both were excellent. Favorite flavors from our group included mint with cookies, a root beer float, and espresso. Creamy, bright, decadent...everything you'd want your ice cream to be. I lucked out and avoided any long lines (something that's nearly impossible at Molly Moon's in Seattle).

Divine! I had a chocolate shake and it hit the spot! I've been craving one for a while and finally gave in; this place did not disappoint! It was creamy, smooth, and oh so chocolately. This place is great on a hot day, I absolutely recommend!

I was at the craft fair at Fort Missoula the other day and the Big Dipper truck was there selling ice cream. It was very good ice cream, but it was a little icey/grainy, like it had melted and refrozen two or three times. Maybe it was just because it was on the truck and not in the store. Even with that, though, it was very delicious (Mexican chocolate) and I definitely enjoyed my double scoop. I don't know that I agree with GMA that this is the best ice cream to be found, though.

Holy homemade deliciousness! The Big Dipper had it all. Adventurous flavors for the adults (cardamom, chai) awesome favorites for the kids (bubble gum with rainbow sprinkles!) generous scoop size, and friendly and helpful staff made for a perfect ending to a beautiful summer night!

  • Laurann T.

The ice cream is fantastic, but I lost my appetite waiting tonight...I was sitting while my husband stood in line to order...35 minutes before closing time...a worker started stacking all the chairs and putting them away all around me-quite obvious she wanted to go home despite the long line and the time left to close. I finally got up and moved since it was quite obvious she wanted to put away the table and chairs where I was sitting-I moved to a picnic table and told my husband not to order me anything. If you run a business, make sure your workers don't start "closing" while there are still customers there! It makes the customers feel like they don't matter and are not wanted! I won't be back!!!

What hasn't been said...? Yummy ice cream Innovative flavors - Such as mint ice cream with animal crackers (look at the pictures) Reasonably priced Long lines - It's just as much an enjoyable event as it is a spot to get ice cream Chocolate dipped cones and sundaes are a plus I would say this is a must try while in Missoula

Located just north of Hellgate Highschool, and Downtown Missoula, it is quite convenient if you're on the East side of Missoula. If you see long lines when you pull up don't be alarmed, the lines move reasonably fast. The selection of flavors is good, and the quality is very good. I like the coffee/espresso flavors, and waffle cones are always a favorite. Many also like huckleberry flavor, which is very good. Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

This is a review by a vegetarian Think I consumed this at least 4 times in a week in Missoula: once at the main store, once from the truck, twice in malts from Butterfly, and maybe a fifth time in a dream. It's not really dream worthy but it is damn fine.

Seriously the best Lemon Custard Ice Cream outside of Braum's (Texans know what I'm talking about here.) This is the only thing open late that I found in Missoula. It was also worth the trip. This easily rivals any Ice Cream I've had, with the exception of Blue Bell. (Nothing rivals Blue Bell. Sorry.) Even with a HUGE line outside the place, it moved quickly and efficiently. It didn't take long to get served, and the prices were good. The mix of people outside the place was super-eclectic, and it was neat to observe. This was probably the highlight of my visit to Missoula.

I'm a semi-regular customer at Big Dipper, and Green tea ice cream in a waffle cone is my favorite Big Dipper combo. This place is great, not too expensive - my wife and I can take our kids without spending a whole lot. The location is great, near downtown on Brooks making it easy to get to, and it's near or on the way to other fun stuff in Missoula like softball games. My only complaint about the place, which has actually turned me away a few times, is that it's very popular. Wouldn't it be nice to find a place like this, and be able to but in line when the need arises! Early evening after even a semi-hot day, and the line to the order window can stretch across and around the parking lot. I can wait pretty long for good ice cream, but not the kids!

I love my fair share of cream joints, but this place has the best tasting homemade ice cream I've ever had! Sorry mom... Fresh waffle cones, that smelled awesome as they were being made. I think I might have to plan another trip to Montana, just to try more of their flavors. I had the espresso heath and yellow cake, LOVes! Priced right and a large serving size. The staff is great too, made me feel very welcome as an out of towner.

The weather was 70 degrees and sunny. I was sweating after a long jog around the city, and what better way to cool down in Missoula than Big Dipper??? This is probably the equivalent of Bi-Rite in San Francisco. They have the usual flavors, but they also have random ones like Cardamom and yellow cake. But the friend I was visiting told me Missoula is known for its huckleberries, so I thought it would be fitting to get that. It was more cream than huckleberry, but it was good. I sat on a picnic table by myself and watched the families of pee wee soccer players and college students as we relished our ice cream and the beautiful day that went along with it. I went back a few days later for a cardamom and yellow cake combo. The yellow cake was like a really sweet vanilla and the cardamom a bit like... the clear Persian ice cream with rice noodles...like rosewater. Yummy nonetheless, and putting it right next to a local brewery was absolute genius! I'll miss you Big Dipper **hearts**

Remarkably average, especially considering the hype. Ice cream is home made but toppings including hot fudge and whipped cream are not. There are better places in America, that's for sure. Staff could use an attitude check. Truly great ice cream includes places like Toscanini in Cambridge, McConnells in Santa Barbara, Bi-Rite in San Francisco, and Humphrey Slocombe also in San Francisco.

I'm so TICKED at this place...for having so many delicious flavors to choose from and the agony caused by deciding which one to choose! One day their "specials" board had flavors with a combination of "chocolate, almond, mint, and banana." They should rename this place "Sophie's Choice" because, seriously people? How am I supposed to choose between those flavors?

When you pull up to an ice cream parlor and see a long line you know you are in the right place. This place is outstanding ! I had the salted Carmel sundae.... Wow My son took some hand packed home, he lives here so favors the huckleberry. Could put on 5 lbs this week on vacation! Great place

$2.50 for a single scoop, $0.50 to be dipped in chocolate, and $0.75 for a waffle cone. $3.75 and I could sit in the heat of a July afternoon tasting cold chocolatey goodness. The dipping chocolate forms a hard shell on the cone. Ice cream had good flavor, and the waffle cone was crispy. At 4:45pm on a Wednesday afternoon in July there were about 5 other people in line, and there was always a line. It moved quickly and people retreated to tables and chairs outside to sweat and eat ice cream. Besides ice cream, there are shakes, sundaes, drinks, lemonade, T-shirts, and stickers.

The first time we passed this place, the line was going out to the road. We figured it had to be great. We had to stop on our trip. My husband had the Mexican chocolate and thought it was just okay - not spicy, just lots of cinnamon. I had the tangerine sorbet and it was also just okay.

This place is dangerous ..... dangerously delicious that is!!! Every time I go I like to try a couple of samples of something I haven't tried before (relative to the line of people waiting), I was impressed with the black licorice's mild flavor, probably the most unique flavor on the menu. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. My favorite flavors are the Mexican Chocolate, coffee and cardamon, and sometimes I do mix all three...muuuuaahhhhhahah! They also have great seasonal varieties and special flavors pop up now and again. Parking gets a little tight here, I usually like to park a few blocks away and walk, especially on a nice day/evening. One of my favorite Missoula stops!

Cardamom and Raspberry Ginger? are you kidding me?? My first "savory" ice cream experience. There's a reason this place is always packed, and it's not because "there's nothing do to in Missoula after dinner." :) Best ice cream in Missoula!

No one does ice cream in Missoula like Big Dipper does. I love this place! The lines are quite long sometimes but it moves quick. I love the "No cars by the walk in window" sign. Haha. Today, I had a scoop of huckleberry ice cream that was marvelous. I don't ever think this place will let me down. Follow them on twitter or facebook to get updates on specials. Fans of Kettlehouse Cold Smoke beer alert: they make Cold Smoke ice cream on occasion!

  • Adam J.

The hype surrounding the ice cream is much higher than the actual taste. It is very good ice cream and definitely worth trying. And they have some pretty good specialties like the Kettlehouse Cold Smoke ice cream.

    (3)
  • Dave J.

It was pretty standard ice cream.

  • Cosmic S.

I was wowed! A variety of unique flavors, and from what I understand, all made from scratch. Haven't had anything this delish in Southern California

  • Carissa P.

Wonderful. Amazing. MADE FROM SCRATCH. Unique flavors, with specials like coconut banana sorbet, tipas chai, chipotle chocolate cherry, green tea, and red tea chocolate chip. A single scoop is very generous and only $2.50. If you're in Missoula don't miss this. Even if all my friends move away from here I may come just for the ice cream. They are even dog friendly, with free doggie cones.

I liked the handmade ice cream here and the handmade waffle cones. They offer some interesting seasonal flavors. The whole scene the Big Dipper offers is nice. I liked the chocolate ice cream here. It was mighty delicious, but definitely not at the top. The best part of this place is the service and the ice creamers. My friend and I dropped by the Big Dipper on our road trip. She asked the ice cream girl what we should check out in Missoula and the ice cream girl gave us some pretty awesome recommendations. There's only outdoor seating, some wooden picnic tables. Bike parking available. Other than that if you like ice cream, check out the Big Dipper!

  • Cristin B.

I loveeeeee Big Dipper! There is nothing better than getting your favorite ice cream flavor dipped in some chocolate in a good ol' waffle cone. Can you say...WHITE MINT OREO?? Amazing flavor - I have to have it every time. Big Dipper is not only great for the crazy flavor varieties, but it also has a great atmosphere. I love sitting at the picnic tables on a warm summer day and just people watching while chatting with a friend. One day, I swear I'm gonna order the super nova.

I've learned that 12 reviews for a Missoula business is like 2587 reviews for a San Francisco business (ahem, Bi-Rite Creamery). Big Dipper manages to attract the lines of a legend like Bi-Rite with conservative (Heath Bar) and imaginative flavors (black tea, for example), a friendly, all-teenage girls staff, and amazingly low prices. $2.25 for one large scoop and $3.25 for two large scoops. Only a dollar more for two scoops?! Why wouldn't you get two?! I've only been in Montana for 1.5 weeks, but I've already been to Big Dipper twice. Tried the special thin-mint flavor (great!) and the old standby strawberry. The strawberry is really what won me over though - not too sweet with actual pieces of fruit all over the place. The line may scare you, but it moves fast. A very worthwhile visit while in MIssoula, or even driving through Missoula.

  • Tony D.

The Big Dipper has a nice variety of traditional and custom flavors. I enjoyed the Vanilla and Reese's, while my friends ordered root beer freezes and Dr Pepper sorbet. They also have special small Pup cones meant for dogs, which our friend's dog thoroughly enjoyed to the delight of everyone in line.

  • Andy C.

Big Dipper is really good ice cream. Plus, I finally found a flavor I can buy and not have my kids eat it all up. Spicy Thai Peanut. It's actually really good!

Just passing through, but so lucky to find this place. One of the coolest ice cream vendors and best ice cream experiences of my life. Great quality ice cream, and amazing flavors both simple, local, and exotic...

  • Don I.

i guess it is tendy to say this place is good. I am from NYC, made ice cream from scratch at charles bakery in little italia in the bronx. This place is not even better than baskin robbins, definitely not as good as cafe dolce. It is overpriced and at times i received ice cream so soift it was almost custardy but i guess i am not folloing the cool crown and just saying its great. oh wll

  • Craig B.

There was a fairly long double line when we walked up to the place (it's a walk-up-only shop). We thought that was odd since it was about 55 degrees out, but we'd heard it was a great place so we weren't completely surprised. I was surprised that the line moved very quickly. Two windows with two "with it" servers really got people through quite fast. The servers were chipper, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, a nice change from the slovenly, uncaring youngsters that many places employ these days. I had the Vanilla Reese's. Was it the best ice cream I've ever had? Not by a long shot, but it was good, with some pretty big Reese's chunks. It tasted fresh, and the texture was fairly creamy. No telltale crystalization that happens when ice cream gets refrozen for whatever reason. If you're craving ice cream, this is definitely worth the trip and the short wait. i'd say it was a very positive experience.

  • Ta H.

Mint chip prep and coffee heath. Yum. Any place that says you can get "halfsies", i immediately like. The single scoops are huge and i wanted to try two flavors so they did halfsies of the above flavors. Love it. The place is in kind of a weird location but apparently in the summer there are long lines. The waffle cone was very vanilla-y and good. Definitely worth going over the bridge for.

Amazing variety, we had a group of 8 and tried almost a dozen different flavors. We enjoyed all of them and look forward to going again soon.

  • Barbs J.

There's not much I can say about Big Dipper that hasn't already been said! I basically agree with all the positive reviews :) My favorite flavors here are the cardamom and maple walnut. Keep an eye for their seasonal flavors, too, because they are great and lots of fun.

    (5)
  • Jennifer W.

The line is long and that's a good thing-- not only does it mean ice cream that is worth the wait, but it's also part of the small-town feel in the city that makes Missoula so special. I love watching families with their kids, couples on their first date or their 50th . . . and then there is the ice-cream. I highly recommend cardamom and yellow cake, paired as a double scoop. But if you ask for two flavors and one scoop, the servers will hook up up. Just saying.

  • Josie V.

I love the variety of ice creams that this place offers. Their ice cream is smooth, creamy and not overly sweetened. I wish I had a place like this in Portland, OR! I had three different flavors over the week I was there. I had green tea, vanilla bean and espresso custard (one of the special flavors of the day). It was amazing. I was a little bummed I wasn't able to taste cold smoke or irish whiskey. Maybe next time!

  • Marty C.

I've never been here.....but I had their Sea Salt, Rosemary, & Olive Oil ice cream and their Mango Habanero sorbet at Silk Road and they were both phenomenal.....& my next time in Missoula, Big Dipper is definitely on my must stop list!!

  • Ruairi M.

Delighted to come across this place while in town. I got a nice shake and my wife got a waffle cone with two of the biggest scoops that I have ever seen! It was about 66 today and there was a line up one side of the sidewalk, it did move fast. They have $5 minimum for credit card use but not a big deal unless you are buying for yourself.

    (5)
  • Michael S.

Great ice cream at great prices. Had a huckleberry/espresso Heath combo and it paired perfectly. You can tell that they milked a Montana cow, mixed in some Montana huckleberries, churned it by hand, and froze it in order to make some of the best ice cream I've ever had.

    (5)
  • Penelope B.

Really tasty ice cream in a variety of flavors. I had the Mexican Chocolate and the Maple Walnut. Delicious. The Mexican Chocolate was quite rich and cinnamon-y. They had some interesting flavors such as Peanut Curry but I wasn't feeling adventurous, or like holding up the line while I sampled a bunch of flavors (this was a first visit). There is quite a line during popular after dinner hours especially on a nice warm evening. Warning: mosquitoes are all over (at least this part of Missoula, right now in June 2009) and if you are like me, you'll get many bites while waiting in line. Quite a few picnic tables out front at which to enjoy your ice cream or sorbet. Some restaurants in town also serve Big Dipper ice cream, including Finn and Porter.

Ok I am not a big Ice cream fan but this ice cream was sooooo good...I wish we went there more while we were there I want to go back to get some more

    (5)
  • Amy B.

A wee bit pricey for my taste, but I guess they make their own ice cream so that's understandable. I got the some kind of sundae that had two scoops of delicious ice cream (Oreo Mint and Coconut) on top of a brownie, topped with whipped cream and hot fudge. HOLY MOLY is was good! It was about 5 bucks, and enough for two people. The wait was about 2 mins and there are plenty of spots to sit in the shade. I'm absolutely going back to try the chocolate dipped option and some different flavors (I've heard the cake batter flavor is to die for).

    (3)
  • Mike K.

As far as ice cream goes in Missoula this is about as good as it gets. Decent product with always friendly service. The reason for the 2 stars is that 3 out of 5 trips here this summer they had no waffle cones. Come on are u serious no waffle cones. The waffle cone is the best thing about big dipper. I just can't see how u can run out of what might be your most popular item. MAKE MORE

Summertime in Missoula... one of my favorite stops! Try their chocolate chip mint ice cream dipped in chocolate. Pure heaven.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. Three bucks and you get very full of very dense and heavy ice cream with superb flavour. Best I've had.

  • Kurt H.

Stopped by while in town fly fishing. Saw the long line and almost didn't stop. After a very short wait I chose a two scoop with vanilla and yellow cake flavored ice cream in a waffle cone. Very good ice cream and worth the wait. Sit on the patio and enjoy the nice Missoula weather in the evening!

  • Erin R.

Oh Missoula! This is THE BEST ICE CREAM EVER! All homemade the flavors range from your traditional vanilla to the more exotic cardamon. The range of toppings are also exceptional and include such things as malt powder and marshmallow creme. Yum! For the daring, you can try the Super Nova which consists of six generous scoops of ice cream on a giant brownie. This is then followed by six toppings of your choice and whip cream...all for under ten dollars!!! God I love Montana.

  • Hieu L.

The huckleberry ice cream cone I got was definitely a winner. Cheap, delicious, and easy.

  • Andre B.

Maybe I just love icecream. Big Dipper is everything an ice cream shop should be except it doesn't have places to sit down inside (and thus four stars). I love the cardomom and safron almond. They also have cones for dogs which is f*****g amazing. Happiest pup ever when I make the pilgramage from Seattle to Montana once a year or so.

  • Robert B.

We found the espresso Heath and chocolate ice creams to be relatively low on flavor and unimpressive. This place was highly recommended to us, but on one sampling was a major disappointment. I threw half my ice cream out. An unprecedented move on my part as an ice cream junkie.

    (2)
  • Jillian S.

There's a lot to love about this place -- the characters you meet in line on summer evenings; free dog cones (and the resulting enthralled pooches); the extraordinary flavors that appear, briefly, among the specials (salted caramel, anyone?); chocolate-dipped pumpkin ice cream in homemade waffle cones. If you're in Missoula, it would behoove you to get here. Right now.

    (5)
  • Youa V.

the scoops of icecream are fair and the waffle cones are perfectly yummy. I love the huge variety of flavors, can never decide when i get to their window! :D

    (5)
  • D E.

Big Dipper is not bad. One of the best things on the menu is the huckleberry ice cream. Other than that, the ice cream is just Ok here. I honestly think it's always so crowded in the evening because there's really not that much to do in Missoula after dinner.

    (3)
  • Kyle B.

Really surprised to find flavors like cardamon in a small town ice cream shack. Even more impressive was the quality. I wonder if it is a chain, or they make all the ice cream for this one little stand. Worth a detour from the freeway.

    (5)
  • Ann K.

One of the few places I can find Cardamom ice cream. It's amazing.

    (4)
  • Shannon S.

May I just say, "ohmahgoodness." The tastes and flavors they showcase here are anything but ordinary (Cardamom? Bring it on!!). It's addictive qualities are evidenced by the lines that sometimes appear even in the wintertime (not to mention the never-ending line during the summer). I hate being cold. But I will sacrifice myself for Big Dipper Ice Cream.

    (5)
  • Dana C.

No joke, this is the best ice cream I have ever had. The cardamom ice cream is no gimmick--this is out of control good. The Mexican Chocolate? Also fantastic. The prices are great--$3.25 for a double portion? Of ice cream this amazing? These guys are geniuses. Worth a trip, worth a detour, worth waiting in line for.

    (5)
  • Mary M.

Just had the biggest tastiest cone! Yum - Tangerine Sorbet - are you kidding me? I swear it's worth the long drive from Seattle! Heading through Montana? Stop at this little homemade ice cream walk up and you will be so happy you did - and Great service too!!!

  • Hello T.

Yes I'm vegan, but don't tell anyone I cheated and had ice cream here. We came on a summer night so there was quite a line but the employees were doing their best to keep it moving. It was the ladies who wanted to try every single one of the 50? flavors before settling on a vanilla cone who contributed to the huge line. They have so many cool flavors, I tried cardamom which sounds a little odd but is so damn good. I have since repented for my sin but I still have the tasty memory.

    (5)
  • Josh R.

Delicious ice cream. Can't beat it. There's not much more to say...check it out for yourself! You know the place is good when people will wait in line during the winter for ice cream!

    (5)
  • Rachel R.

  • Jaelyn C.

  • Cassandra C.

  • Jonathan M.

YUM!

    (5)
  • Victoria G.

Pretty good ice cream - but also a lot of hype. Worth a visit but I'm not 100% sold on this being the best ice cream in Missoula. Try local flavors like huckleberry to get the full experience! Lines can be long so go during off times.

I have had much better ice cream, it's not worth the money at all. You would be better off going to a store and getting Ben and Jerry's. But,,,, to support the locals I do stop in once in a blue moon if the lines aren't long.

    (2)

Violet and grandson Mace waiting on line for Big Dipper ice cream. According to Violet and Mace it tastes great. Violet has white mint Oreo ice cream and Mace has vanilla Reese's. Five star rating from both of them.

  • Mike M.

  • Bree I.

  • Garret N.

Great flavors, fast service, good prices. They've got it all. Except clean tables. Can't have it all I suppose.

  • Megan G.

Amazing! I had a suger come with white mint oreo ice cream dipped in chocolate sprinkles. My friends had a strawberry sake and the same white mint oreo I had. We loved it all. The wait was long, but worth in the end. This would be a great summer stop, especially if you're on vacation.

  • Mike K.

  • Julie G.

  • Lindsey G.

Divine! I had a chocolate shake and it hit the spot! I've been craving one for a while and finally gave in; this place did not disappoint! It was creamy, smooth, and oh so chocolately. This place is great on a hot day, I absolutely recommend!

Always delicious , today had the tangerine sorbet, it was fantastic. I have tried daily flavors and the regular always on the menu flavors . So far my favorites are the coconut, yellow cake, and huckleberry .

  • Kat F.

    (4)
  • Emily M.

Maple walnut, hands down. I've been to Missoula precisely twice and here twice. A must go if you're in town.

  • Brian L.

    (4)
  • Bob R.

This is a review by a vegetarian Think I consumed this at least 4 times in a week in Missoula: once at the main store, once from the truck, twice in malts from Butterfly, and maybe a fifth time in a dream. It's not really dream worthy but it is damn fine.

  • Tim D.

  • Aaron R.

  • Jermaine G.

  • Matthew B.

    (3)
  • Rachel S.

    (5)
  • Cindy W.

When you pull up to an ice cream parlor and see a long line you know you are in the right place. This place is outstanding ! I had the salted Carmel sundae.... Wow My son took some hand packed home, he lives here so favors the huckleberry. Could put on 5 lbs this week on vacation! Great place

    (5)
  • Kristen H.

Homemade ice cream and innovative flavors served from a small shack. Plentiful parking and helpful servers. This place is too awesome to pass up. Get the huckleberry ice cream, ya hearrrd!

    (4)
  • Miranda B.

Mexican Chocolate in a waffle cone is delicious :)

    (5)
  • Sundi P.

The first time we passed this place, the line was going out to the road. We figured it had to be great. We had to stop on our trip. My husband had the Mexican chocolate and thought it was just okay - not spicy, just lots of cinnamon. I had the tangerine sorbet and it was also just okay.

    (3)
  • Dolores G.

    (5)
  • Daryl G.

Cardamom and Raspberry Ginger? are you kidding me?? My first "savory" ice cream experience. There's a reason this place is always packed, and it's not because "there's nothing do to in Missoula after dinner." :) Best ice cream in Missoula!

    (5)
  • Nico A.

    (5)
  • Adam J.

The hype surrounding the ice cream is much higher than the actual taste. It is very good ice cream and definitely worth trying. And they have some pretty good specialties like the Kettlehouse Cold Smoke ice cream.

    (3)
  • Dave J.

It was pretty standard ice cream.

    (3)
  • Cosmic S.

I was wowed! A variety of unique flavors, and from what I understand, all made from scratch. Haven't had anything this delish in Southern California

    (5)
  • Carissa P.

Wonderful. Amazing. MADE FROM SCRATCH. Unique flavors, with specials like coconut banana sorbet, tipas chai, chipotle chocolate cherry, green tea, and red tea chocolate chip. A single scoop is very generous and only $2.50. If you're in Missoula don't miss this. Even if all my friends move away from here I may come just for the ice cream. They are even dog friendly, with free doggie cones.

    (5)
  • Sophia K.

    (4)
  • Cristin B.

I loveeeeee Big Dipper! There is nothing better than getting your favorite ice cream flavor dipped in some chocolate in a good ol' waffle cone. Can you say...WHITE MINT OREO?? Amazing flavor - I have to have it every time. Big Dipper is not only great for the crazy flavor varieties, but it also has a great atmosphere. I love sitting at the picnic tables on a warm summer day and just people watching while chatting with a friend. One day, I swear I'm gonna order the super nova.

    (4)
  • Lydia C.

    (4)

    (4)
  • Andy C.

Big Dipper is really good ice cream. Plus, I finally found a flavor I can buy and not have my kids eat it all up. Spicy Thai Peanut. It's actually really good!

    (4)
  • Michael G.

Just passing through, but so lucky to find this place. One of the coolest ice cream vendors and best ice cream experiences of my life. Great quality ice cream, and amazing flavors both simple, local, and exotic...

    (5)
  • Don I.

i guess it is tendy to say this place is good. I am from NYC, made ice cream from scratch at charles bakery in little italia in the bronx. This place is not even better than baskin robbins, definitely not as good as cafe dolce. It is overpriced and at times i received ice cream so soift it was almost custardy but i guess i am not folloing the cool crown and just saying its great. oh wll

    (2)

    (4)

    (5)
  • Hans A.

    (5)

    (5)
  • Marty C.

I've never been here.....but I had their Sea Salt, Rosemary, & Olive Oil ice cream and their Mango Habanero sorbet at Silk Road and they were both phenomenal.....& my next time in Missoula, Big Dipper is definitely on my must stop list!!

    (5)

  • Megan C.

    (5)
  • Dr. E.

    (4)

    (5)
  • Hieu L.

The huckleberry ice cream cone I got was definitely a winner. Cheap, delicious, and easy.

  • Siara S.

So much fun, great prices and a wide assortment of dessert choices!!

    (5)

Right now.

the scoops of icecream are fair and the waffle cones are perfectly yummy. I love the huge variety of flavors, can never decide when i get to their window! :D

Big Dipper is not bad. One of the best things on the menu is the huckleberry ice cream. Other than that, the ice cream is just Ok here. I honestly think it's always so crowded in the evening because there's really not that much to do in Missoula after dinner.

Really surprised to find flavors like cardamon in a small town ice cream shack. Even more impressive was the quality. I wonder if it is a chain, or they make all the ice cream for this one little stand. Worth a detour from the freeway.

One of the few places I can find Cardamom ice cream. It's amazing.

Just had the biggest tastiest cone! Yum - Tangerine Sorbet - are you kidding me? I swear it's worth the long drive from Seattle! Heading through Montana? Stop at this little homemade ice cream walk up and you will be so happy you did - and Great service too!!!
