Well I got to try the famous chicken. Had wing and breast!!! The chicken was juicy and really good. They served Jo Jo's and a salad!!! I was amazed with all the food they gave me and I got all that at under $8. The staff was friendly and my server Tracie did an amazing job making feel like one of the locals.!!! If you are ever in Helena Montana don't for get to check out this place!!!

Excellent broasted chicken and reasonably priced. Passing through the area and found it on yelp ...all reviews are good and I agree. Would recommend if passing through Helena.

Food was good, it always is. However, service was subpar. We waited about 10 mins, then I had to ask for a waitress. When she finally came she did apologize. After she dropped off our food, we didn't hear from her again until she dropped off the check. This was a 10% tip day.

Our service was good. The beer was served in a goblet like cup which was top heavy and I little difficult but it looked rather neat. The chicken was pretty good and so were the potato wedges. I could have lived without the overcooked fries and my husband said his ribs were not seasoned. Thank goodness they had a ton of different sauces for him to use. Pretty decent place. Just not amazing. My chicken was rather small for the price but my experience was not bad.

Love The Suds Huts. You can't go wrong with broasted chicken period! The Jojo's are the best!

Incredible chicken, cheap beer. Not much more you could ask for! Steins of beer are really cool! Wood fireplace is great in the winter, very cozy.

I wasn't thrilled with the cheeseburger the first time around. Gave it the benefit of the doubt and visited a second time to try their "famous" chicken dinner. I really wanted to like it, I really did. But it was dry and tasteless. Honestly I've had better fried chicken from the grocery store deli. It's a shame because the suds hut has a real historical local presence in town and could really do SO much better. I won't be visiting again.

Stopped here on our way to Yellowstone from Glacier national park. Best fried chicken I've ever had! I don't even like fried chicken.

Good Chicken, A bit SLOW on getting the beer out to the table but good friendly service and good food!

The chicken is by far the best I have had. The best thing about this place is the consistency and cheap goblets of beer!!

Great fried chicken, cheap beer but odd atmosphere. If I was in Helena again, I'd totally go back.

You wouldn't think that a chicken joint would sell good burgers but I can honestly say they have by far the best burgers in town. They actually taste very similar to In n Out Burgers. The Jo Jo's were OK....a little on the cold side but OK. I was hoping they'd be similar to the Mojo's served at Shakeys.... No luck. Still.. Great place and good service and did I mention the burgers are excellent??!!!

Best chicken in all of the west. The chicken here is so good. They remodeled and the place is still very cozy and inviting.

Meh... Chicken was crispy and cooked to perfection, but it have to agree with a previous poster that it completely lacked spicing. If the place didn't bill itself as having "the best" chicken, maybe my expectations wouldn't have been so high. But as it was, it was disappointing. (As I finished my meal, a staff member was behind the bar raving about the boneless chicken at Taco John's... Maybe I'll head there next time I feel like chicken)

LOVE the broasted chicken & Jo-Jo's! They also serve Cheesecake Factory cheesecake......BONUS!

Best chicken in town. Very friendly staff.

Great beer and burgers, but the chicken was lacking flavor. Don't get me wrong, it was really juicy, and was crunchy, but the chicken lacked any "flavor". It is not as good as everyone says, KFC has better flavor. The waitresses we've had the three times we've been there are not very friendly, they don't smile, and are not sincere. We always try to smile and say please and thank you, and don't for much; but our waitresses couldn't leave fast enough.

Great place to eat. I had the grub steak and it was phenomenal. My wife loved the fish and chips, my daughter had their broasted chicken (she isn't much of a meat eater of any kind) and she ate everything on her plate. The atmosphere is cozy and their wait staff was very attentive. We will be back...soon

I really adore this place. It's just an all-around good experience when we come here. The chicken is always crisp and juicy, the jojo potatoes are cooked to perfection and the salad is light and crispy. The nachos are actually kind of good, too. (liquid cheese, not grated). The dark interior is actually kind of nice for my wife and I - it provides a nice atmosphere. This is not a five-star restaurant. This is sports bar food, and man - they do it right.

I can never tell what the casino restaurants are gonna look like on the inside just by looking at the exterior. This one was pretty small inside but had super cute seating arrangements around the fire pit and nice dark lighting. I ordered the jumbo shrimp platter but they weren't jumbo, just butterfly cut to make them look bigger. Oh well. For Helena, it's nice enough, I guess. I would go back too, just not for the shrimp plate and for the chicken instead. Party on, Montana.

So I have a dairy allergy (yay?), and I wrote to Suds Hut on Facebook to see if I could even have their chicken and jo-jos. I heard back within the hour that I could! So, my Dad and I hot-tailed it down there for lunch. I will back up here and say that I grew up in Helena, so I really should have come in here sooner. But, sometimes...well sometimes you don't check out the Suds Hut for 30 years. It happens, ok? Anyway, fast forwarding, Dad and I ran down there for lunch. There was a little arm twisting. Dad isn't always a fan of "new things," because he's a gangsta and he rolls how he wants. Dad ordered his favorite: a cheeseburger. Of course, I tried the Famous Chicken, I'm gonna press rewind again. Ok, so we walk in and it is nicer inside than outside. Quirky, but updated, doesn't smell bad, good! The waitress came right up, she was super friendly, got us our drinks right away (brewed iced tea, very good). We got our order in right away. Fast forwarding again, there is a giant metal rooster. And a suit of armor. And lots of taxidermy. It's really fun. I like that sort of kitsch. So without much ado, our food comes out. It's REALLY HOT, and smells amazing. Dad's cheeseburger is wrapped in a paper wrapper (which I love), and his fries look really good. I wait for mine to cool down and take a bite and...oh my. Juicy, tender, delicious chicken. JUST PERFECT. It's so awesome, I want to order 18 more pieces immediately (but I don't, because I'm not a jerk like that). The jo-jos (which Dad said used to be called "Johnny Spuds," were crispy and fluffy all at once. It was lunch so I wasn't imbibing, but the drink menu was nice and looked reasonably priced. I can't wait to come back again, and get a pitcher of Guinness with that chicken! Keep in mind, this isn't a fancy pants place. The food comes in plastic baskets, and the drinks came in plastic cups. But, it's delicious, great service, and quick, and our lunch totaled $16 before tip. Can't beat it. Go check it out! I wish I had checked it out approximately 25 years ago, and I just can't get those years of my life back. I just have to make up for some lost time with that chicken :).

I decided to go ahead and try this place out this time while passing through to see what was so great about their fried chicken. I can honestly say the chicken was great. I'm a southern boy by heart so I'm used to a lot if seasoning which this lacked but was still pretty tasty. The Jo Jo's were really good and ice cold and I mean ICE COLD beer. The service was great. Very small place so get used to your neighbor especially if you sit at the bar.

I went to Suds hut and had a very rude waitress and the food was not cooked all the way. I had thought that maybe it was a one time event but then we gave it another try. Food was so so but the service was still the same

This is one of my favorite places to grab dinner in Helena. I got the chicken for years until a friend said I should try the burgers. Now, that is all I get here. I think they have one of the best burgers in town. They grill their buns, which always makes a burger better. It is small, so if the parking lot is packed, you probably will have to wait. The Miller Lite comes in an ice cold goblet. If you want a burger and a beer, this is your place.

Everyone raved about this place, so I thought I had to try it... Very disappointed. I thought the chicken was soggy as were the joe joes, but everything was steaming hot. The salad was gross... icebert and carrot shavings. The atmosphere was an old school bar. The only cool thing was that they had on both the MSU and U of M football games, so the bar looked fun, but that's not where I was, sooo... still not a great review from me.

"Winner winner chicken dinner." I definitely felt like a winner after ordering the "chicken dinner" at Suds Hut. The skin of the chicken was very crispy and flavorful, while the meat was very moist and tender. The "chicken dinner" includes a half chicken and a side of HUGE potato wedges. I will definitely come back here again.

We love the Suds Hut. HOWEVER, there are times when the food is not as good as others. We ordered takeout tonight and it was bad. They obviously need to change their grease more often than they do. The potatoes were almost black and tasted like old grease. YUCK! They certainly looked nothing like the photo below... Come on, Suds Hut! You can do better! UPDATE: The owner of Suds Hut contacted me to apologize for the condition of the food we got, and offered to buy us dinner. I have to say - really appreciate the follow up and the care for his customers. I am changing my review from my original 1 star to 4 because of that. We consider ourselves regulars, and will go back again and again!

Most places, you have to realize that this IS Montana. The food is okay, in comparison with other places to eat in Helena. The beer is always cold.

Tried the chicken a few weeks ago and I still can't stop thinking about it! Prices reasonable, nice atmosphere.

Great chicken dinner! Salads not great, lettuce, grated carrots & 2 tomatoes. Baked beans were great and go along we'll with the chicken. Not a huge selection of foodm. but will definitely come back for the chicken.

The food may be good but everything Is covered in grease. My daughter peeled a groove in a grease layer about 1/8th of an inch thick. So disgusting

The Sud's Hut is always solid and has the best broasted chicken around. Expect to wait during typical busy times, but they move customer's through pretty quick.

Don't forget to try items other than the chicken; I've finally found a decent burger in Helena. The spicy giardinara mix that I ordered on the side wasn't quite what I expected (it was hot, as in temperature) but it was good, and the giant beers washed it down nicely. As a side note, if you drink 5 Millers, you get the sixth free. As a side note/rant: if you are going out to eat, or just going out in general, don't slather yourself in cheap, nasty, trashy perfume (or any kind of perfume, really). A little dab'l do ya'. A fellow patron at the Hut nearly ruined our experience because she stunk so bad. Luckily we were seated far away from her, before I totally lost my appetite and/or visibly dry heaved. What evil stench were you trying so hard to cover up, honey?

Everyone is right, the chicken and hamburgers are incredible. There is also a small casino inside. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere cozy, particularly when that fire is roaring in the winter. I am definitely returning with my whole family.

Suds Hut! What happened? We have had your chicken 3 times in the last month and each time the chicken is getting smaller and smaller. Your drumsticks look like drummettes and your breasts look pathetic. Still the best tasting chicken in town but losing the WOW factor.

  • Chris R.

The chicken was moist and flavorful, but I have concerns about the cleanliness of the restaurant even after overcoming the shady exterior. We were served a salad with a near-rotten tomato. We also received expired sour cream with the meal. The bathrooms also needed a cleaning. The jo-jos (oversize fries) were okay, but the size greatly varied, which resulted in some being overcooked. Despite having a lot of staff the waitress never checked on us so we could bring these issues to her attention. This lack of attention to detail is concerning and I highly recommend you check your food thoroughly before eating.

LOVE the Suds Hut. The chicken is really really good. The burgers and sliders are delicious. Basically everything we've tried on the menu is great (we haven't tried the fried gizzards...not our thing). Haven't had a bad meal there yet. Our friends go there at least once per week. Okay, the decor is a little cheesy, but it fits. The whole place has a great sense of humor. The marquee out front flashes "60 degrees: CHICKEN WEATHER" (60, or whatever temperature it is...always chicken weather). Plus there's a menu item that's a deluxe chicken dinner for two, with a bottle of Dom Perignon :)

Do you know what Broasted Chicken is? Taken from a food website Q and A section: "Broasting is a registered process that builds pressure in the pot which seals in the natural juices while sealing out almost 100% of the cooking oil. It is not only the process of frying chickens under pressure, but includes a special marinating process. The Broasting process makes chicken that has the taste of fried chicken, but is moister and less greasy. This process is NOT available to home cooks. The Broasters and the seasonings are sold only to restaurants and the food trade, so Broasted chicken is available to you only when you dine out." I had the pleasure of eating broasted chicken at Suds Hut with my foodie companion, Mr. Hottie and I loved it! When he told me about the place I was curious but not super excited to go. When we sat down in this simple/ almost divey eatery, I was told to not even look at anything else but the chicken. I did have a chance to look around at the restaurant. It's old, but homey. It had a fire pit in the middle of the room and I guess the fire is roaring during the winter. There were a lot of large tables with families seated. This place was pretty much hopping. Our waitress was quick and efficient and got our food and drinks out without a problem. After taking in the scene, it was time to eat! I thought the chicken was merely fried. I was wrong, my dear foodies, dead wrong. This chicken was super infused with fried goodness, but not as greasy as you would think. The meat was moist and just as tasty as the skin. It came with a simple side salad and we ordered potato wedges to go with our food. I washed it all down with a HUGE goblet of Moose Drool beer and I was a very happy and FULL girl! I would definitely come back to Suds Hut to eat some golden broasted goodness! The meal was very simple, and yet delicious!
