For Montana, this was awesome budget Mexican food... Especially considering we're 4 hours from Canada.

Poor service - the waitress clearly hated her job and was rude and impatient. We were greeted by chips n salsa being tossed onto the table as she walked away saying nothing. Bland food - I got a mix platter with 2 different items that tasted exactly the same. Meat cheese lettuce and tomatoes. No flavor or spices whatsoever. My coworker got something else but had the same experience. Avoid - not sure where the high ratings come from. Some older folks seemed to love their meal but either their palates are dead or they don't get out much. Taco Bell sucks but would be better than this joint. Stay away!

My wife and I go here regularly as it is in our neighborhood for M&M (Mexican & Margaritas). We have never been dissatisfied. The food is always good. Recommend the sizzling shrimp fajitas. Very authentic and good service.

Delicious authentic Mexican food for the montana folk... warm chips with salsa to start and great service throughout the meal

The food was very good. Shrimp were fresh, sauces good. We had a good time, accepting the location next to the casino and the decor. Waitress was knowledgeable and attentive.

I do believe we would go back here again. It was a great meal for the money. The Salsa is mild, for those that like it that way, as well as the meal. Next time I will ask them to put some heat into it.

The food was really good. Chips are warm and salted well with a great not too spicy salsa. Had the beef burrito which had a frat flavor and loaded with a lot if ground beef. The environment was a little old and run down, the staff had no personality at all. So, the food good but the experience was uncomfortable.

Really enjoyed the flavor of the salsa Loved the layers of taste in the chicken PLO mole Don't fret about the atmosphere worth the casino next door.

Most of us know that you can get better Mexican food in Montana than you can pretty much anywhere in Canada. So I was excited to try out a new place while visiting Helena. I read the reviews on Yelp and decided to try Melaque. I decided against one of the other restaurants because the owner sent a really rude email. She should realize that people read stuff and take that into account. I ordered take out, the carne asada plate. It was huge. I would have preferred the meat to have been chopped out more but it was pretty tasty none the less. It was topped with sauteed green peppers & onions, and came with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce/pico de galo, soft tortillas and even chips and salsa. It was more than I could eat. The refried beans were amazing. They had that smokey flavor that I've only had one other place. Yeah these were the bomb! The service was fantastic. I chatted with a waitress. She was real friendly. I didn't have to wait too long which was nice too. The next time I'm in Helena, I'll be sure to stop here again.

I ordered the burrito verde and a chili relleno with rice and beans. Not sure what kind of meat came in the burrito verde because it was grey. Gross!! I didn't even eat it. The inside of my chili relleno was cold. Waitress was great and quick service.

I was super surprised to find such great Mexican food in our State Capitol. Family-owned & authentic food. The Carne Asada is a work of art - when we drive over to Helena for a fishing weekend, we all will wait all day in order to get to Melaque for dinner - it's SOOOO worth the effort! Fair priced. BIG PORTIONS. Good food & drink. DELICIOUS!

I don't really understand the reviews here and have to disagree. The salsa looked like ketchup and had no flavor at all. I ordered a tamale and it was ok, not great. The refried beans are runny, the rice was ok, I like it dry but not too dry, they got that right. The presentation of the food was unpleasant add everything was either orange or covered with orange cheese. I just thought it was extremely bland. I would recommend for families with children or others who cannot tolerate any type of spicy food. I took my son who loves Mexican food, and he was not excited about eating his burrito. He refused to eat the beans and rice. There are other restaurants in town with much better food than this, and that my son well actually eat... we won't be back.

We enjoyed the tasty salsa and chips, and the margaritas were good. However, the food was mediocre and probably won't bring me back. We ordered the enchiladas, a chimi, and tacos. Server was hustling and efficient, but not incredibly friendly.

Food was well seasoned and tasted great. My wife had a nice conversation with the waitress in Spanish. Definitely would return in the future.

By far the best Mexican food in all of Montana (at least in Helena and Missoula) Try this place! You won't be disappointed. Carne asada y Pollo asada .... Both are very good and remind me of being home in SoCal.

I have Eaten Here several times. I can't say the service is the best however they make up for it in the Quality of their food. Very Nice welcoming staff and love the warm chips and salas before the meal.

I haven't had the food but GREAT margaritas, which you can get by the pitcher. Top notch!

I can't believe I've lived in Helena for 2 years and have bemoaned the lack of Mexican restaurants-- when we have terrific Mexican- at Melique! Great fresh food, clean, kitchy Mexican decor and great ameri-mex food. Delicous chips w a tasty salsa. We had the carnitas special - terific with fresh guacamole and a pico de gallo sauce. Beer margueritas - and various soft drinks- rounded out the meal. Items include standard American Mexican fare- all w rice and refries beans. Not over cheeses which I like. Our waiter was terrific- food came quickly and he checked on us often. I would give this a 4 star in other cities but since I'm so happy we have such a terrific option Melique is getting a 5 star!!

This is the only decent place for Mexican food in Helena. I don't really like the salsa but the food is pretty good.

Went with a couple friends and ordered a pitcher of margaritas. Drinks were good. Service was not the most attentive I've ever seen, but the girl was very nice and was nowhere near as bad as others have suggested. We didn't eat food, but I definitely intend to go back to try the food as well!

Good, solid mexican food with the typical offerings. Maybe a three-star place if you've got tons of options, but definitely 4-star for Helena.

Great Mexican food, very unexpected in Montana. The outside of the restaurant looks iffy, but dont let that stop you. The food is delicious, service is fast and friendly. Highly recommended

Love this Mexican joint, honestly aside from heading to Colorado or California, the food is amazing, hands down one of the best Mexican restraints from Idaho to Nashville. Montana has a grand jewel, let's hope we don't lose it again.

Best Mexican food I have had in Montana. I went in with modest expectations but this really blew me away. Service was fast despite dinner rush and I even tipped the cook. Will be back pronto.

This place used to be really solid, but, it has went down hill. I can't eat here now because every time I do, I regret it. Too much GI trouble suggesting something isn't right in back... Service has also suffered.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
