This has been my favorite place to eat since they were located on 4th Street W. I find it interesting someone found it unauthentic. This is as authentic (IMO) as it gets in Billings. If you want unauthentic, then there is always Dos Machos for that. My cousin-in-law is from Mexico and her rice is the same as that made at Torres. The tacos they have here are the only ones I have ever enjoyed out. Usually the tacos are pretty blah elsewhere. The flour shells are so good, and people I know purchase their shells and sauce to take home. I absolutely adore the tacos. They are HUGE and once you add their sauce, absolutely heaven. The enchiladas and lupita special, also fabulous. The decoration here is pretty bad, as pointed out. It hasn't changed in 20 years. The booths/tables/chairs are all just as old and are pretty dated and beat up. If you need nice decor, then this isn't the place for you. It's also the only Mexican restaurant I've been to that doesn't offer complimentary chips and salsa. The prices used to be so cheap that it made sense to me, but over the years the deal that was Torres sort of changed. It's now pretty much what you would expect, cost-wise, of any Mexican place. That said, the prices aren't bad, and the food more than makes up for it. In closing, the food is excellent. It's worth the drive out of town, by far. Keep in mind they often close on holiday weekends or sometimes a full week at Christmas, so if in doubt do what we die hards do...call and make sure they are open before making the drive, but do make the drive!

The only problem with Torres is the inside of the restaurant is an absolute disaster area. It's so bad inside that's it's actually depressing! The employees and owners are absolutely wonderful people. They do a darned good job on everything but decorating the inside. The food is good. You just have to know what to order. Their enchiladas with hot sauce are wonderful. I also like the beef soft tacos. I enjoy their beans and rice as well. Yes, you have to pay for the chips and salsa. Try a side of beans and cheese also and it's damned near a meal! If you like cooking homemade Mexican, they have a lot of unique grocery type items they sell near the cash register also. I usually buy a tub of Bueno diced green chile's out of the freezer.

They have amazing food! Ya it is kind of a hole in the wall but the staff is great and this some of the best Mexican food I have had (including the stuff they serve in Mexico). I would recommend Torres' to anyone and everyone.

The food there is great! I'm not sue why all these out of state fools can't appreciate a home cooked meal. I will agree the decor is out dated but that is not the case with the food. That is the beauty of food though, to each its own! You certainly can't judge a book by its cover and the same goes for many longstanding local businesses in Billings. Their enchiladas and tortilas are amazing and made from scratch. You can tell the ingredients are NOT from a can and tortillas are NOT shipped across the country before you eat them. I have never eaten a better tortilla (I have tried quite a few different ones). I will contine to go back time and time again for their delicious food. The service is best on the weekends!

Im kinda confused as to why this restaurant has such negative reviews unless things have really really gone down hill in the past year which i guess is possible, but I doubt it. Unfortunately I didn't really get to check the feng shui of the building while i was there. I do remember that I didn't like the color of the carpet so I was going to write a really terrible revue trashing this place and telling every one to avoid this family owned eatery at least until they changed the carpet color. but then i changed my mind for, some reason. I ate this amazing burrito that was submerged in a deliciously cheesy homemade enchilada sauce I cant remember what it was called but it was simply amazing. Their chalupa is like nothing else I have ever had. My only problem with the place is that it is more than a thousand miles away.

I really love this place. I like the authentic flavors that they have their. The salsa that you order off the menu isn't that great, in my opinion, but is similar to what I would find in Texas. the service can be extremely slow but I have only gone during busy times (at lunch time). the carne asada that was extremely tasty. I would highly recommend that dish. I also like how they make their tortillas there themselves and the smell is really good and reminiscent of home. they also sell tamales and other things that may be hard to find in Billings. kitchen is semi open to the seating area you can watch the cook in the kitchen. it is one lady and she cooks the food just like if one of my family members were cooking. it is because of this that I didn't dock a star from the review: I would rather wait for some good food then to be hurried. however people should be aware that it could take some time to get your food. I promise that you will not regret it however.

A Billings lunch time tradition for over 20 years. The location is a bit out of the way but still finds itself plenty busy around noon. While the decor and menu aren't flashy, what you do get is a tasty, filling meal that gets you back to work on time.

We look for small restaurants. Last night we found this mexican family run cafe. What a delight! Smiles were served starting at the entrance - to our table. The homemade chips/dip were yum. We ordered the carnitas and were smiling after grandma put her seal of approval on our selection. It came with fresh Guacamole and home made tortilla - what a great find. We left sated and ready to spread the word about this neat nice stop.

Homemade true Mexican food. The way it should be done. I've been going here for 15 years now. Always came here for lunch in high school. The owners are friendly and the rest of the staff is always pleasant to talk to.

Ok come on every one lets clear the air, you have texmex, Southern Calif. mexican food, you also have new mexico style cooking. just matters what you like, but for the AUTHENTIC get real all you have is the Americanized versions. A friend of mine a Restaurant owner last trip to Mazatlan asked if I could teach his chef to cook taco bell mexican so they can have things on the menu that many of the Gringo's would recognize. And because they get Europeans the bland flavors would help with because of lack of spice. What I'm finding here is another level of Americanized Mexican food and no offense to my new Montana Homies. But the Mexican level Im finding here is better called Mont-mex, not spicy, middle of the road average. Torres was that alright nothing that stood out. I did my usual new place order, Taco, Tamale, and a chimi. The food had some flavor but no spirit, no pzazz, the salsa was a canned tomato base with a little chili, but no marriage of spices and flavor. The Taco wasn't a crisp corn just heated and folded, even a partial fry will bring that corn flavor out. I get the same at home when I just want something to eat and dont want to put in any effort. The Chimi small in average dinner size, you usually find. Not to be cruel or Mr. know it all, but folks now I know why your open tues to friday the profit margin for your products and the prices you charge gives you that cushion for 3 days off. Your food lacked passion, the romance of creative dishes that no doubt you did have at one time, has been lost. A friday night at 630 pm you had 3 tables with guests, we left at 715 and you had 2 tables. The sad part we drove over to King and at Quadoba had a full dining room so I wanted to see how how Cafe Rio was doing they were lined to the door. Here is my honest tip, fill the plates, get creative in your dishes, stop taking the easy way out, put some chips on the table at least. Food cost on corn fried chips when you make the tortillas is 7 cents a tortilla fried and served, average basket is 5 tortillas, thats 35 cents, you can dress up your salsa's and offer your one now and have one with roasted peppers negro, garlic, onion with a tomato base. I know you guys have been around a long time, but get back the passion in your cooking and the customers will be filling your rooms.

Wow, I really disagree with the other reviewers, maybe because I am a local. Several Mexican restaurants in town are from the same family and therefore have the same food but Torres has different food than the rest. Large portions. Love their salsa. Beans and rice are great and I have enchiladas there as well. People love the Lupita special which is melty cheese with tortillas. The decor is just fine with me and I'm happy to pay for chips and salsa. I think their salsa is the best in town. They have a food truck that goes around town that has almost the whole menu. I've appreciated their food since they were in they tiny location on 5th.

absolutely would not go back. as others have stated, decor is blah. food is blah. my carne asada was fatty, and would taste the same if i just cooked up some ground beef at home. no liquor/beer license so the margaritas are virgin; and the lime margarita was so terrible even w/o alcohol i didn't drink it and left it on the table.

Decor and service very blah. The whole place was decidedly unremarkable, if not dingy. The water cups were itty bitty. You pay for chips and salsa. Entrees were just all right - I don't even remember what we had, but I do remember being not impressed.

Not very authentic and definitely not very good food. Tried this place twice and was very disappointed both times. The chile verde smelled and tasted just like it came from a dog food can. They are said to make their own tortillas but apparently they never learned how to do it well.

Love Torres food, Get the Lupita Special & Carne Asada which is often the special. The Decor is definitely lacking and it's true, you must pay for Chips & Salsa but the food is great.

Ok for northern Mexican food, nothing is spicy though, but that is due to the local population preferences. The shredded beef enchiladas are very good. Chips and picante are pricey and pretty much like store bought. This is the closest to Tex-Mex that I have found in Billings, but we are a long way from Mexico so I can't really complain. I tried all of the Mexican restaurants in town and will not go back to any of the others.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
