Great cooking, fresh food, and fun makes Don Luis' one of the best restaurants in Billings. The chefs at Don Luis are the best in town. They have tremendous skill. They are a fast team, and they keep a close eye on what they are sending out of the kitchen. It's great to see so much pride and attention going into a meal. The team can prepare any dish well. Prime rib, seafood, and Mexican food. The specials are great. The selections are seasonal and well prepared. I ordered the seafood enchilada's and I was extremely surprised by the amount of real seafood inside. It wasn't imitation, or canned. It was grand. I also recommend the prawns. My prawns were fresh, huge, and hot. The atmosphere is hip. The place can really get crowded. It's a great place to enjoy a meal and drink a few beers. The only problem I have had at Don Luis is with the other customers. For instance, I have been scolded by old ladies for holding the door open too long in order to help my mother into the building. I am always amazed by the behavior of people. Especially when it comes to treating restaurant staff. For instance, if you think you know how to prepare Chile Relleno's better than the experienced chefs at Don Luis, STAY HOME! Despite all this, Don Luis will always treat you well. P.S.- I get lots of smiles every time I go. Whenever I go to Billings, I make a special trip to Don Luis.

If you like Americanized Mexican food or have no idea what I just said, then you will enjoy this restaurant. I didn't leave hungry & the food tasted ok but I prefer real Mexican food. The decor is fantastic! Service is attentive & friendly. Portions are large & price is cheap compared to home (Seattle).

Nice little place. Good service and very friendly. Extensive menu. Good home cooked Mexican food with a little bit of flare.

Taquitos on dinner menu are indescribable. Amazing enchiladas, esp the Spinach Enchilada (order with a fried egg on top). Best Mexican food in the state, maybe the West! Great atmosphere, service, fresh ingredients, could eat there every day and never get tired of it.

Very decent upscale Mexican bistro. Always a wait to get in but worth the time. Family owned and operated so the service is personal and friendly. Food is very good and they have generous portions. Close to downtown hotels and night club scene. Edit... Have been back several times since my last review and they food quality is slipping quite a bit. Not nearly as good as back in the day. I hope they work out whatever problems they have as I miss the good ole Don Luis

I have always enjoyed Don Luis. When I come home from Denver to visit Billings it is always on my hit list of places to eat. I love their fajitas and the salsa is excellent. The atmosphere and service is great as well. There is no where else in Billings I would rather get Mexican food.

The food wasn't authentic Mexican food, but it was delicious and the portions were big. The fajitas and nachos were a highlight. Some vegetarian/fish options were available. The only thing wrong was that I felt a little neglected by our server. We were seated for a while before we received menus, and waited a bit for our drinks while our server talked to someone at the bar who eventually ordered a drink and received it before us.

I would not have normally even bothered with Mexican so north of the border, but, my buddy was craving it. Warm chips and good salsa (5 star) everything else was just OK, not bad. The Waiter was out of his depth, not Senor Service. We did get a lot of food.

Great food! Will eat here next time I'm in Billings!

So far as Mexican food in Billings goes, this place isn't bad... it just isn't excellent either. Their food tends to be bland, though palatable. They do have some of the best prime rib around and their prices are reasonable, so we often take out of town guests here. They can only sell beer and wine (no hard liquor), so that's something to keep in mind if you normally like to have a margarita with your Mexican food (don't fall for the wine margarita!).

Very good food, nice sever. If it hadn't been suggested for a steak it would have been tough to get my husband there, I would give his steak a 10 plus, I had something off the specialty creations which was also very happy with.

We usually really enjoy Don Luis, but on occasion there is one waiter that ALWAYS has horrible customer service. You almost have to go get him to get anything. I guess from now on we will request to not be in his section.

Was pleasantly surprised. I am a Mexican food snob from southern California. I say there is Mexican food and then there is Mexican resturaunts. Mexican resturaunts normally don't have good Mexican food. This place was an exception! I had the pastor taco special which had grilled pineapple salsa in it and it was really good. Portions were big and service was a good average. Can't wait to take the wifey here.

The only reason I wouldn't give this great Mexican restaurant 5 stars is the inconsistent service. It's a great little ma & pa place, but very tastefully decorated (better than you would expect for its small size and location). The food is to die for - very authentic, piping hot and HUGE portions. And the prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. Did I mention HUGE portions? My husband finally tried the prime rib (it has a reputation of being the best in town - yes, at a Mexican restaurant). He got the "petite" cut for just $20. It filled the plate. He got an end cut as requested - and said it was hands down some of the very best prime he has ever eaten (and he has eaten alot). Of course, you fill up first on their homemade chips and just perfect salsa. His dinner also came with a small round loaf of some of the best garlic bread ever, a generous and well appointed salad, and a large side of fries. Good grief - we could have fed 4 with his meal alone....not to mention mine. It was a steak (actually, a huge piece of thinly sliced prime) done in a Mexican style with grilled green onions and a roasted jalapeno - served with a cheese enchilada, rice and beans. Priced at $18. As usual when I eat at Don Luis, I could barely eat half (sure those great chips and salsa have something to do with it) and had another delicious meal for lunch the next day. It's too bad they don't have a full liquor license, but really, what's better than a cold beer with Mexican food? They do make a "margarita" from wine, but it is really the only thing in the restaurant that I think is not worth the price - it comes in a very small margarita glass. The wait staff - although friendly, their efficiency is hit or miss. It seems that oftentimes they are understaffed. The kitchen gets the food out very quickly - so the problem is certainly not there. The wait staff seems like they could just use a bit more training in good customer service. But, it would never stop us from going back to Don Luis - our very favorite local Mexican restaurant - and in our top 5 favorite restaurants in Billings overall. You can't beat the food for the price, which is a nice change from some of the other great restaurants here, which are much pricier.

The food was amazing. Two days later, I'm still dreaming about fresh salsa with roasted red peppers and cilantro, and those amazingly perfect sauteed and seasoned vegetables. Even the refried beans were delicious. I ate every bit of food on my plate and still wanted more. I shared the veggie fajitas with a friend and still had leftovers. The price was well worth the quality. It would have been expensive if we hadn't shared, to be honest, but the portions are huge. The service is the only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars. One waitress helping the entire restaurant, while another bald dude was pounding beers at the bar (apparently too busy to work). Our chips and salsa went unfilled for at least fifteen minutes, all while the bald dude drank an entire domestic beer with lime.

Sign said they were open till 10. I came in at 9 and they seated me but it quickly became clear they were about to close. I wish they had just told me they were closed. McDonalds would have been a better option and I don't even like McDonalds. Menu was shockingly overpriced. $15 for enchiladas, you got to be kidding. In a panic i ordered chicken mole. What I got wasn't even close. A bunch of chunks of chicken breast that had been cooked in a microwave that were swimming in some sort of enchildada like sauce. Rice was dry and burnt. Beans were nothing special. I'm not a food snob but this place sucked.

Great food, great price, great service. I came in just before 3 not having eaten lunch yet. I was greeted by a friendly waitress. She informed me that the lunch menu was available until 4. The chips and salsa were fantastic. Don't expect the red goup you get most places, this is real salsa and you'll find chunks of real ingredients. A little spicy, but really good. I ordred a Fajita Burrito, and the waitress informed me that it was a foot long. Yeah, right, not for that price I thought. But she was not kidding, it was a burrito the size of a subway footlong. Even though I was one of two people in the resturaunt the ingredients were very fresh, and you could tell it was freshly made. The burriot was also really great. The waitress did inform me that extra salsa and chips was more, but she was giving me an extra order for free. Bonus! Overall really happy, and I'll be a regular when I'm in town. Also if your staying at a nearby hotel show them your room key and the will give you 10% off.

If you love Mexican food this is the place to be! Truly authentic, HUGE portions, and great staff. It's hard to find a great place to eat, and this one should be on everyone's top list.

Went for a late dinner with a few friends the other night and although the food was really good, it was pretty pricey compared to similar places. I had the Camarones a la Diabla and the boy had a huge burritto that was loaded with so many jalapenos it was hard to eat. All in all a good place that I'll likely go back to even if it's a bit overpriced.

We would not come back. The food was not so great and the prices are as high as Seattle.

At work, we get lunch takeout from the Don maybe twice a month, and they're consistently good. Prices are great, too. The salsa - yowzah! Hottttt. But I likes it.

We were just in town for the night and were craving Mexican food. The restaurant has really great and festive decor but it was a little toasty for this August night. They only have beer and wine so their margaritas are made with wine. We got a taste of one and it was the peach frozen variety: very frozen and sweet but not terrible. I just prefer the original version with lime and tequila. They have a good list of beers, Mexican and American, but their wine list was pretty small and not great. We had a really delicious meal of carneros soft tacos (that was a huge order so we shared). The menu is huge and has a bunch of Americanized entrees that could be a turn-off, however their "specialities" are the only things that seem authentic, but we were very happy with what we ordered. The flavors were very authentic. The owner is very chatty and sweet and came over to say hello. Our waiter wasn't great but the other waiter seemed really attentive. Considering the fact that this is Montana, this was a very good Mexican experience.

The food is good. The service well not so good. very unfriendly and I had a sickening experience last time I ate there and will never go back. I found a fingernail in my glass of water after I had consumed most of it. I just about puked. I told the waiter and she just shrugged it off and said sorry. No offer to comp my meal just sorry. I urge anyone to not patronize this place unless you want some ones DNA in your food. They also charge for refills on the fountin pop which I find ridiculous. Stay Away from this place for sure. negative 0 stars from me.

We ordered Chile Relleno's and I asked if it was made with poblano and she said yes but it was an aneheim with alot of seeds in it. I asked for it to be free of any sauce and it came smothered in a strange looking sauce she said was green chile. It came looking more like an omelet and not a traditional relleno. We ordered enchhiladas too and they were so smothered in sauce you could not see the difference between the taco, and enchilada way too much sauce. The only thing tasty were the refried beans as the rice was dry n crunchy. It was overly warm in there as well and the waitresses stand around picking their teeth. Needless to say I won't go back there, besides picking teeth they don't even smile at you. Ha.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
