We went here for lunch one day as we were roaming around Stillwater. Service was fine but the food was nothing to remember. The french onion soup tasted as though it was from a can. I had a burger and fries. The fries were very good but the burger was underseasoned and not that great. I guess if you want a beer this is the place to come but I don't think it is my scene.

If you come in with the right expectations you won't be disappointed. This is a slight step up from a dive, but not quite a classy pub; sort of that in between. This place does have a quirky charm though. It has that old establishment feeling that is both inviting and warm. At the same time there is a lot of energy here that makes it fun and invigorating. The drink options are pretty good. They have a really solid selection of beer and your standard cocktail options. The food choices are your standard bar options that will go well with your beer/cocktail, but you probably will enjoy it more the more you have had to drink. This is the kind of place you go to with a group of friends to hang out, have some good drinks, eat some bar food, and just enjoy yourself. If you keep that in mind you'll have a good time. 56/100

The Mad Capper. This place is the best way to describe a bar that feels like you want it in your basement. The owners are so friendly. And the bartenders are your best friend. And the servers are wonderful. The burger and fries are the way to go! And plus free popcorn!!! You must try this place and please do not just get the usual beer. Open your mind. There is better beer out there and the Capper had them. Best bar in Stillwater.

Great spot for dropping off the husband or meeting up with friends for a few drinks in the always charming downtown Stillwater. I wouldn't necessarily praise the menu for their food selection or quality, but the atmosphere and charm of this bar make it a nice laid back, no fuss hangout. Free popcorn, crazy crap on the walls, a few TV's and drinks are all we need anyways, right!?

Service was friendly, and we got right in. Food for the most part was descent, but one thing did bother me. The Capper burger says its a monster, with lots of cheese and bacon. Therefore we split it because of that description. Well the burger was the exact opposite of what it says, and we ended up ordering more food. Kind of a rip off, with tasteless fries...

Initially went in for a brew and a snack and was pleasantly surprised. A vast array of quirky signs and decorations welcomed me in and I sat in my favorite seat at the bar, right in front of the taps. There was a variety of styles and even proper glassware! The bartender greets me and takes my order, then starts up a lovely conversation about different beers/styles with me. I'm the nicest beer snob you'll ever meet and this guy knows his stuff. On his recommendation, ordered the pretzel sticks and Loved them! Haven't stopped in for lunch/dinner yet, but I will soon!

Good drinks and good bar food. A classic bar to just sit and lounge in with friends. Fairly priced and quality service.

Great food and an extensive tap beer selection in a fun space. I have been going to the Mad Capper for over 30 years and every time I go I see something new on the wall. Their service has always been top notch. If you're visiting Stillwater do yourself a favor and stop by the Capper. If you're a wife on a shopping spree do your husband a favor and drop him off at the Capper first. I hear that for the price of a few drinks they'll provide daycare services for bored and over shopped husbands.

Decent service, good beer, bad food. Not a fan of being served appetizers that aren't made fresh!

My family of eight dropped in here over the holiday season to grab lunch after taking family portraits down the street. We grabbed the only large table; it's up the stairs in the back. Very cozy! Our server was attentive & friendly. The portions were large, but nothing out of the ordinary. I enjoyed the quick lunch but will definitely explore other bars & restaurants in downtown Stillwater the next time I'm in town.

My memories of Mad Capper are fond. My wife and I stumbled across this place while on a driving trip up the Missippi and the St Croix on a beautiful fall weekend. We wanted food and a football game. Done and done. It's lively (yes, crowded during prime-time) -- but that's why you wanted to go to a public eatery/pub, right? On occasion, we even shared our table with people looking for a seat -- no need to hog 4 chairs when there's only 2 of us and you can make friends. Enjoy the people, have a good beer on tap, and order a really great burger! It's a pub -- enjoy the tradition of the place. We came back every year for 6 years until we moved to Austin. We miss you, Mad Capper. We hope to fly back soon. We'll stay at the Elephant Walk.

First time eating at this restaurant. Will be back!!! The hamburger was fantastic and the fries were awesome and you get a lot. Has a fun atmosphere. Have a feeling it could get noisy on a Friday and/or Saturday night but that's half the fun. Have to try this place!!!!

Came here for lunch with a coworker and thought it was ok. We parked in a lot on a back street and walked in through the back door. The bar wasn't crowded and we got prompt attention. I had the buffalo chicken wrap for lunch with fries and while it was fine, they didn't put the buffalo sauce in the wrap! I had to pour it on myself which kind of defeated the purpose of ordering the buffalo chicken wrap as it was simply a chicken wrap with sauce on the side. Coworker got a burger which he seemed to like. The food seems good and I'll probably have better luck next time.

We ate here for dinner on Saturday night around 5pm. It was average.

When visiting my hometown I always make my way to the Mad Capper - they have great drink specials, and the food is well bar food, however, they offer a twist to the typical bar food that is usually offered. I had the Cucumber sandwich with bacon, avocado, and cream cheese (lightened with milk) it was delicious and refreshing. The bar staff and waitrons are also pretty nice and entertaining.

My wife and I just stopped there the other day. Have to say the food was ok, nothing special. Even with the bar being less than half full the service was spotty. I am not sure if we would dine there again as there are better options around the area.

This place is as close as my nose, well maybe my left foot, so I often forget about it. We stop here when with "friends with boat" on the Croix for burgers, beer, chix sandwiches and such. Years ago my fav was the cucumber cream cheese sammy on sourdough. It's still on the menu. Last night went w/ a pal there for dinner and was in need of veg so had a classic Cobb salad. It was great, piled with turkey, bacon and egg. But what really made the veg go down ... drumroll ... they have the best blue cheese dressing in the SC valley! (I hate to admit it, but it tops my favorite, which was Bob Smith's Sports Club in Hudson, remaining a close 2nd). You can turn the little plastic cup upside down and it doesn't spill out as it's so thick, delish and chunky. My pal is a StillH2O townie so she knew everyone in the place cuz it was a weeknight. While the other Yelpers say it is touristy, and yes, it is on the weekend, think about this: this place has been owned by the same folk for years, she says, so they have to please the townies during the week, ya know?

Went tonight to try Mad Capper's Friday "fish fry", against my better judgment. It was worse than I imagined - frozen triangles of pollack, very mediocre. Average french fries and coleslaw. Wish I'd ordered a burger. Where does one have to go to find real food, made from fresh ingredients? Unless you pay big prices ala Marx, all you find in Stillwater is processed, pre-frozen and warmed up crap, which I expect at chain restaurants, was hoping for something better here. Service was good, ambience zilch. Won't bother eating here again.

Many bars and pubs line Main Street Stillwater, but if you are looking for a decent tap selection, and a place where you need not fear locals or tourists, then this is your spot! Very festive and cozy for the holidays, worth checking out. Do pay in cash after the credit card fiasco, better to be safe than sorry.

Beware--this place has been caught stealing credit card numbers the last two years. It's a published fact. Hundreds of people. Beware. Also, food is mediocre and expensive. The beer list just 'OK' -- the tap list is often half decent and half 'too cute by half'/nothing special. Plus many of the good beers are poured into small 10oz glasses without rhyme or reason (inconsistent). I've never met a friendly bartender or server there either. Only a couple of TVs, in bad places too.

Totally impressed by this place! Finished up our day trip to the St. Croix River valley by swinging by this place. Entered the bar to find the place pretty packed. Definitely a sports bar chock full of memorabilia covering the walls. We were only trying to find a spot at the bar, and after a few groups were called to be seated we were able to grab just that. Perusing the tap list, I was pleasantly surprised by what the place carried. I'd definitely call it an above average selection. Me and the lady each asked questions about some of the taps we had yet to taste and were given samples to taste as well as a nice, personal overview from our bartender, Matt. We each settled on our selections, and were given some tasty beverages. Speaking of our bartender, he was very personable and eager to chat about the goings ons of the sporting events taking place (Gopher hockey, Tigers/Rangers, even got some Lynx chatter). He was very friendly and took the time to empathize with the girlfriend when the Tigers were struggling and even slid an unnecessary pour in front of us (Lift Bridge Harvester - quite nice). Overall a great first experience, and am not far off of a five, but I'd like to try the food before I go that far.

Great beer selection. Great service. Lots to look at. Food is pretty standard. But they have free popcorn!

WHAT! I stopped by yelp to see how my favorite bar in Stillwater was faring and was shocked to see so many poor reviews! My fiancee and I live in walking distance from downtown Stillwater and choose to go to Mad Capper for dinner and a beer every single time we want bar style food. We started with Pub Monique and a combination of the consistently terrible service, passable food and loud bar atmosphere drove us away after 4 or 5 attempts. Then we headed for Whiteys where the atmosphere is much better, service is good but the food is just acceptable, no more. Bounced around the other bar and grills and restaurants in the area, I've been to them all at least 3 times, many much more, and we keep coming back to Mad Capper for a fantastic turkey burger, walleye sandwich, hog wings, cuban and regular burger along with a great tap list and friendly service. Oh, and free popcorn!

The Capper's Burger went down really well with a Coors Light. The atmosphere and the service is awesome. Next time I am in Stillwater this will be a for sure stop in.

Awesome selection of beer, both on tap as well as bottled...First time I can remember seeing Red Stripe in the "middle" part of the country... The food was so-so, everyone I talked to bragged about the burgers. I had the bacon-cheeseburger (don't remember what it was called on the menu), and it wasn't bad, just a bit dry. The buns they use for their burgers were awesome. Their selection of appetizers were pretty good too, and this is the first place I've had Fried Cheese Curds, and I loved them! I dont know how they rate compared to other's Fried Cheese Curds, but I'm sure they can't get much better...we also had the buffalo wings (w/jerk sauce). The wings were pretty good too...real big and juicy.

we were two faces among the tourist hordes of stillwater, mn last saturday. we browsed antique store after crowded, dusty antique store until our feet could take no more concrete floors. we stopped in at the mad capper for lunch. it was crowded but the service was prompt (if somewhat harried). i got the hot ham + cheese on rye. pretty decent. the fries were good too. my husband got the godfather burger -- a half pound burger topped with some sort of marinara sauce + mozzarella cheese aplenty. the bun itself was a masterpiece. together, they were sheer bliss. i was definitely jealous of his ordering prowess. and, though the prices were a little higher than what i'd like (c'mon... it's a TOURIST spot, what do you expect?), can you ever say anything but "hurrah" to a place that has frosttop root beer on draught?

The food here is okay, nothing bad to say about it. I have only been here for lunch a few times and the service has only be marginal. That is why I've only been a few times, much better places to go in Stillwater. I wouldn't waste my time going here, check out Smalley's, Whitey's, Monique's or P.D. Pappy's.

I really like this place for two reasons: beer and burgers. Their tap selection is top notch and the burgers are quite tasty. I think that have a special where you can can get burgers half off.

A local favorite for one of my long time friends. what do I remember about this spot? Beer, mixers, and good bar food.. french fries and sandwiches. Burger's were favorites amongst others. Can be kind of touristy.

Stopped in for a quick bite on Sunday afternoon. They were not super busy, but the service was really slow. I ordered a burger and fries - the meat was like a puck; not juicy at all. I'm sure they do well based on location alone. At least the beer was expensive.

The Madcapper is certainly a good place to eat.. Years back, I sold pull-tabs there.. - The food is pretty decent, the prices are good, and it's a combo of a touristy place, as well as home to some locals for recurring visits. I would certainly say it's worth the stop, if not for the food, for the random decor and assortment of people.
