nope. its either bland or too salty/oily with this place. tried just about everything on the menu. not even the chicken wings are worth a try. if you've read good reviews, its probably from people who have never had a real chinese food

I was generally surprised to find this Chinese restaurant in Minnesota .....the food was great .... we have appetizers of potstickers and two lunch specials: sesame chicken and orange chicken.... the food was delicious, well seasoned and the waitress Marsha was super tentative.... definitely recommend

After moving here from a mega city that had surprisingly few choices for good Chinese food unless you were in one specific part of town, I was relieved to find something different in a place in a first ring suburb. I had to suffer through 6 years of every restaurant opening the same jar of "Chinese Food Sauce" and pouring it over some combination of protein and vegetables and calling it food. Red Pepper stood out because they at least put a little effort into it. The non-standard dishes are pretty good and show someone cared enough to at least alter their jar of "Chinese Food Sauce" I've had their Pecan Crusted Chicken and the Red Pepper Beef, and both are good deviations from the typical General-whoever and Sweet and Sour Fried Thing. The pecan Chicken is a large breast of chicken coated in chopped pecans served over a bed of fried won ton strips. The sauce is tangy with just a hint of spice (Minnesotans may disagree with the spiciness level). It has always been cooked perfectly, but comes without a vegetable. The Red Pepper Beef is a version of a barbecue beef dish where the beef is crispy and served with a slightly spicy, dark red sauce. The vegetables are a little inspired, but all in all a good dish. Neither of those dishes are anywhere close to "light", but I don't really go to Chinese restaurants to eat healthy. All in all, I'd recommend Red Pepper if you are in the area. I wouldn't drive from the other side of the world, like St. Paul or something, for their food, but it's good enough to hold me over until I can find a great place.

We've been to the Red Pepper in S Mpls twice, and both times it's been great. THe hot and sour soup has just the right edge of heat and tart. The Mandarin chicken has a wonderful sauce, and the Buddha's Delight had an awesome assortment of perfectly cooked veggies that made it just as appealing as the meat dishes. Not sure why this place isn't busy at night, but hoping this review will help!

Forgot to say that my ears have never been singing from MSG. Another plus IMHO.

Pleasant surprise. We had not been here in quite some time and there were new owners. It need features Vietnamese and Cambodian along with Chinese. We had one of our old favorites, egg foo yung. It was as good as we remembered and the service was even better! Not too mention, the egg rolls and cream cheese wraps were very good.

This was a real treat. Truly outstanding meal that fed 2 and we have enough leftovers for lunch for 2. $22 for it all. We will be back.

I was driving by and stopped by to place an order of Orange Chicken to go. The women at the front counter told me it would take about 15 minutes to prepare so I stepped outside to make a phone call (about 5 minutes). I re-entered and continued to stand in the waiting area as all of the seating was occupied. After a couple of minutes the same women that I had placed my order with made eye contact with me and asked "what did you order again?, Oh that's right Orange Chicken. I'll go check on it" Being a fairly tall guy and the fact that I was standing, I was able to see through the window in the door into the kitchen. She opened a refrigerator and removed a large bucket, [the Orange Chicken] and scooped out a couple of clumps, placed in on a plate and put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. She then took it out boxed it, bagged it and brought it out to me. I still went ahead and purchased it. When I got home and ate it I found it chewy. Rather then returning it I just decided to seek my Orange Chicken elsewhere. You can still eat there but it's probably cheaper to buy a frozen meal and microwave it on your own.

Before I start, I just want to give a shout out to whoever was in charge of the music selection that night I was there. Bryan Adams, 999 Roses, K-drama music, Cambodian pop music. If you're out there reading this and wondering what people think then let me say that I get you, and we should totally hang out. Do you lift? Wanna' get a beer? I'm down for anything, 'sup? Anyways, the restaurant is still advertised as "Chinese" food, but it's now owned by very nice Cambodian people and they've introduced a few South East Asian dishes. The pho here is delicious, in my opinion, the broth has full flavor. Ask for sriracha, hoison, and garlic chili on the side. Actually, just tell them to bring out the bottles otherwise they'll give you about a small spoonful on a plate. I like my pho extremely spicy so by the time I'm done adding condiments in it'll look so red and spicy you'd think I was committing suicide. What will keep me coming back here instead of going to Kimson though is the fact that they serve papaya salad and laab. I love these two dishes and they make both very well. Now I won't have to travel all the way to St. Paul for it. Correction: they don't have laab, but they do have papaya and warm smiles.

5 Stars for Food quality and taste. 5 Stars for quantity. 5 Stars for service and reception. 4 Stars for ambiance and silverware. 4 Stars for the wait. Every time I move to a new state I desperately look for my go-to Chinese place. I'm glad I found Red Pepper. The food tastes awesome and the quantity is very generous. My favorite dinner dish is Chicken Mai Fun. The dinner combos are a good way to try this restaurant without burning your wallet. I have tried their Sesame, Orange and General Tao's Chicken combos. I would recommend the Orange chicken for sure. :) Lunch combos are cheaper with smaller portions but the wait isn't worth it if you have to get back to work. ;) The staff are very friendly and polite. These days I just place my order over the phone for a pick up. It's more convenient for Friday late nights. :)

Very slow service. Walked in and and it took a while for someone to come and help us even though they had many open tables. Other people were getting irritated. They were very understaffed. They were also very slow to serve us after we sat down. I must say though that the food was very good/flavorful and they had huge portions so I would definitely give this place another shot.

I've been a fan of Red Pepper for sometime now and been a frequent patron over the past few years when in the area. Today I was able to go in for lunch and had a A+++ experience with food and Service. Both servers checked to make sure my food was good and kept my drinks filled. Food was hot when served and portions were more than enough for lunch. Great experience overall.

Over ten years ago, I lived nearby and this was our favorite Chinese place ... especially the Pecan Chicken. I have since moved away, but was recently back to visit family and had some time to kill, so decided to check them out again. Sadly, no Pecan Chicken! However, the Kung Pao family ordered by my husband was still very good. I ordered Pad Thai noodles with chicken. The sauce was lighter, less peanuty and almost bland, just barely saved by the cilantro. The chicken was very moist and tender. Since there was a ton of Pad Thai, I had some for lunch the next day and was pleasantly surprised to find it was tastier having sat overnight. It's a shame they no longer have the Pecan Chicken though, that was the best.

We live next to Great Wall, and although I think their food is pretty good, it's always been hard to justify their prices. So we tried Red Pepper Chinese restaurant, and now have been back 3 times. The restaurant is pretty basic, but clean, kid-friendly, and good service. The food is maybe a slight step down from the above mentioned, but still better than your typical American Chinese restaurant. Oh yeah and it costs about half as much. Definitely our go-to for chinese when we are in the mood, and well worth the extra 5 minute drive!

LOVE IT! We love Red Pepper. We usually get take-out because we live close. Sue, who usually answers the telephone is always nice and fun to talk to. They are very nice when we pick up our order. The food is delicious. Sesame Beef, Beef Chow Fun, Shrimp & Broccoli, etc...it's ALL good. Everyone that I introduce to this place absolutely love it. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Even though I moved out west nearly eight years ago, I still attempt to get take-out from Red Pepper just about every time I go home to visit family. This cute little restaurant will most likely always be my favorite chinese food spot, regardless of how americanized it may seem to others. I have eaten in several times, and I do enjoy the cozy ambiance of the restaurant itself, but for me, the real gem is the food, and I will focus on the two elements I order every single time. General Tso's Chicken - I know, this is pretty far from authentic chinese food, but I'll be honest, this is one of my favorite dishes in existence. The pieces of chicken are huge, the breading is never overwhelming but always delicious, and the sauce has the perfect balance of spicy and rich, with just the slightest hint of sweet. I also love that it comes with huge broccoli florets, which is pretty unique when comparing this dish to other places. I've never had a bad experience with the Tso, and I confess I've probably had it dozens of times over the course of 15+ years. Egg Rolls - Only one time in my life have I had egg rolls I liked better than these, and I can't for the life of me remember where it was, so for all intents and purposes, I'm giving Red Pepper the blue ribbon. These are not healthy egg rolls, by any stretch, but they are perfectly cooked every single time, and the flavors that explode out of them once you crunch through the shell are just incredible. There were times when I would walk over to Red Pepper from Best Buy (across the street where I used to work) just to get an order of egg rolls to make the day more bearable. Food - 4.5/5 Stars ::: +.5 star for nostalgia and being open on Christmas for us lonely Jews.

Food is on the better side of standard Chinese fare, prices are pretty high. I often suspect that they will stick you with the largest/most expensive option if you don't adamantly request the smaller, cheaper portion. Have ordered a standard two-dish takeout from here before and had the lady charge me 45 bucks for it...curious, but who am I to argue?

I agree with Anne M, this place has gone downhill in the last few visits I've made. Quality is worse and price has gone up. For me it was never really outstanding but you could get your standard Americanized Chinese food here for pretty cheap. They used to have dinner for two specials for $9.99. Those would come with two entrees, fried wontons and fried or white rice. The options for specials weren't spectacular but certainly ok for the price. The same special is now $15.99 and they are certainly skimpier on portions. They are heavy on the rice and noodle portion but hardly give you any meat and the veggies seem old. The prices on the regular menu are a bit high too. We used to come here every once in awhile when we were too lazy too cook. It was cheap and convenient, but now I doubt we'll be back. I couldn't agree more about the server. It's always the same guy and he's never happy.

My veggies and tofu tasted like they were marinated and cooked in dirty dishwater. The rice was crusty! Seriously. So gross! The place seemed to have several (elderly) regulars though and it's been open for years (so I wanted to try it...Patrick's halo effect, maybe?). Anyway, I felt badly for them, because I don't think they know any better. For goodness sake, please go to Hunan's. This place can't be good for even one precious day of life left in you.

The food is just not as flavorful as it once was. The sweet & sour shrimp was skimpy on the shrimp and too sour. The seafood chow fun was rather dry and there were large clumps of noodles stuck together. It seems like they've raised prices a little and also tried to skimp on the food - I'm very disappointed because this was one of the few places that I could count on for good Chinese food in the suburbs. When our food was brought out, the server did something odd that really bugged me. He started to put our plate on the table but then he took it away and showed it to the people at the table next to us because they were trying to decide what to order. He then proceeded to show them all of our dishes and told them what was in each one. Now, I do understand that he was trying to help them, but hey, I ordered and paid for that food. It's not a freaking display case! I've been trying to give them the benefit of the doubt because I've had a hard time finding good Asian food in the suburbs, but the big fail in taste the past few times I've been here and this dining experience was the last straw. I won't be in any hurry to come back here.

The food is consistently good. Not authentic Cantonese or Hunan, but about as good as you can expect to find in Edina, MN. They do a lot of take out and have orders ready in 10-15 minutes. Their location is nice for dining in. The staff is very friendly and has worked there for many years. I often order off the menu and have no problems preparing my requests. I often order Shrimp (or chicken) with mixed vegetables in black bean sauce. If you like black bean sauce you will be pleased.

The food is decent, but the prices are high and the servings are on the small size given the price. The biggest issue I had with this place, though, is that they automatically added an 18% tip on the bill for our party of 5, but doing so was not disclosed on their menu. When I asked about it, they said that it is their policy and has been their policy for a long time with no offer to change or discuss further. I don't mind automatic tips, but at least disclose it, and for a party of 5?

Went here for lunch today. I am picky about Chinese food but figured all the four star reviews would mean good stuff. Nope. I got the mock duck w/ vegetables lunch specials and it was glazed in a sweet MSG brown sauce. Plus they gave me a tureen of sweet red MSG sauce on the side. C'mon now. Perhaps the lunch specials are for the suburban cream cheese wonton crowd, and ordering off the menu is the way to go. But I was not impressed.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
