I brought a group of guys to Sunnyside on a Saturday for lunch hoping for soul food, but unfortunately it seems like Sunday is the day to get the good stuff. Chef James was gracious and able to warm up some Jambalaya and greens because I asked, otherwise short-order breakfast, burgers, and sandwiches all they have on Saturdays after noon. We had a great time listening to Chef's stories, this is a man who has lived. I agree with other reviews stating that fixtures here are a bit drab, however the food, service, and stories more than make up for the fact that Chef James would rather spend money making brilliant food than buying new tables or chairs.

Now here's a place with character, and true Southern cookin'! Down to earth, good soul music, good food, and the most inviting people. James the chef/owner is a real character - full of warmth. His wife is very nice too. It's kind of a family style place, with long tables, so people can all eat together, giving it a community atmosphere. You can also eat at smaller tables if you want. Try the Sunday brunch if you like fried chicken. Collard greens are great too. Local football players go there, so you might run into Carl-the-former-Vikings-whatever-his-name-is (I'm obviously not a football fan!).

Food/Drink: Not only is this place soul food, but it seems like it's cooked at someone's home kitchen. So if you're looking for place that has some good soul food that seems like you're at home, this is the place. We came here for a Sunday brunch and were pitched the buffet. Looked good so we started digging in. The highlights were the chicken (oven baked awesome), the greens, the cornbread stuffing, the bread pudding and then red beans and rice. Everything else on the buffet is pretty good also and you've got a good mix of things you'd absolutely want to eat (mac and cheese, candied yams, ham, jambalaya, cornbread). Ambiance: Here's the thing, if I understand correctly. The place is extension of the catering business and the owner has some background with the local pro teams. All that being said, picture this more of a cafeteria setting then a restaurant and you're fine. Walls are lined with pictures and memorabilia enough to keep you looking up and around. The chef is there with a story and even the patrons sitting around and eating all have something to say. Service: So it was a buffet, but the service was pretty good. When we went up to the buffet they opened all the dishes (closed it after we left or the next group left). Dirty dishes were taken pretty quickly and water was always asked before filled up. Went to check out, no issues and paid in cash (tip in the tip jar). Overall: If you want to feel like you're eating soul food at home, this is the place to go. The options in the buffet are enough and the food is good stuff and it's prepared well. It's easy to overeat here, because everything goes well together. Soul food is meant to hit the soul and this place does it.

I've read some of these "reviews" and they talk about how nice the chef is and such a welcoming place this is, BUT here's the behind close door character of chef James : Inviting : yeah right , there need to be a sign saying "Private property, trespassing will Result in chef James coming out and yelling at you". Full of warmth: so is jail. Family place: dang I must be the red head stepchild and the black sheep all roll in one. Chef James a "real character ": come to the back and you'll see his TRUE character! Embodies the feeling and the culture of the neighborhood : yeah one word "hostile" Listening to chef James stories: yeah have he told you about all those time he ran out the back just to yell at people who drove on to the back parking lot ". Those are the best. Here's a question for the public , have you ever drove through any restaurant or stores' parking lot and have their owner or chef run out just to yell at you ? I'm sure most of us have done that in our life time and never have any issues with the place or owner, but try that here and get ready to meet the "REAL chef James".

I love Sunnyside Deli! I've been ordering my cornbread dressing from this restaurant for years and the taste never changes-just right! Pricing is reasonable and they are very accommodating for last minute orders. I have even picked up a fully-cooked pan of cornbread dressing the morning of Thanksgiving without being charged extra. Sunday brunch is fantastic eat-in or take-out!

I stumbled upon this place on my way to the humane society. It's tucked in a cute, quiet neighborhood. I was driving around and needed to eat some brunch and this was the only place that was open. Boy was I lucky to find this place! The service was amazing. The owner and her helper (not sure if he was her son) were unbelievably nice. I had the Southern style buffet. It was decadent. No, it wasn't like 5-star hotel food or anything fancy, but it tasted great. My favorite was the collard greens. This is one of those cheap and tasty places that you need to try for yourself!
