Inspired by Matt R, I felt the need to write a revew as well. My friends used to work at this fine establishment, and even though they are now called Bigby's (which was probably smart on their part, considering Beaner is considered derrogatory towards Mexicans), I will remember them as Beaners. Many an evening was spent here, hanging out, using their (then, not sure about now) free wi fi and drinking Chai chills. And their pastries are pretty tasty too. I was a big fan of their chocolate chip or blue berry scones. I think this place is open til about 10 or 11 on the weekends, but it's not really near anything else. For people looking to escape students (both high school and college), this isn't a bad place to go, though the furniture isn't so conducive to sitting and hanging out. I love you Beaners... er Bigbys!

I spent the day here yesterday working away on lesson plans. It was pretty quiet- just lots of people stopping in to grab a coffee and go. I was the only patron actually seated at a table for most of the four hours I spent there. Beaners (I can't ever call it Biggby, seems strange) has lots of wonderful sweet choices in the form of caffeine. I can always find something wonderfully sweet that gets me going. That being said, you're going to pay a pretty penny for that sweet thing. Their prices are on par with Starbucks. Of course Biggby is local, so a much better place to spend your pennies, but you'd hope it'd be a bit more affordable. The free WIFI was a bit hokey, and I had to ask them to re-set the router a couple times. Another lady came in to work and couldn't get hers to work at all. I was a bit annoyed by the slowness of it when it was actually working. The staff was friendly. I especially enjoy that they always have a trivia question posted on their chalk board that could earn you a free drink, if you get it right. They are usually impossible and obscure, but still something fun to do while waiting for your drink.

I remember I took a second take and laughed from within when I saw this chain was called Beaners, years ago 2000-2002. I think it's different out here but in the west coast you hear people refer to Mexicans as beaners. I'm glad to see they changed their name. Anyways mmmm I enjoy their non-coffee drinks. The Carmel Big chill and they had they orange drink I forget the name but reminded me vaguely of a spin off of an orange julius. I use to pick these up before classes over at east wonder hall. Yum..

Carmel Big Chill......you make life better no matter what. Like a good friend, you know just what to do when I need a pick-me-up. Your 500 calories of carmel sugary goodness put me into a blissful sugar coma as I watch the employees play hacky sack behind the counter & make over-the-top forced commentary with the clients. What more could you want? (Besides cheaper coffee and better music, that is) Hey, overall Biggby is a decent place to sit and work on your laptop, chug coffee or read the paper.

I have no idea why this place is called Beaners on Yelp, because it's the Okemos Bigby location, but I guess a name change doesn't always mean it's reflected on Yelp. I popped in here one evening to get some studying done since I'm not very productive in the apartment. The baristas that night (didn't catch their names) were really helpful (I'd never been to a Bigby before...) in letting me know what options I had. I took one of their advice to try a tea latte, and have no regret. The staff is super friendly and seem to be in a good mood. It's a pretty spacious location, and it's usually not that packed. Seating is plentiful, and they even had a card rack with some pretty funny cards stocked. I'm not sure if it's common for all Bigby places to have a rather elaborate "fill your own pound of coffee" station, but this one does. My only complaint is that they close at 9! Maybe it's the Californian in me, but I'm definitely not used to coffee places closing before 11. I'm sure the baristas have a life, too, and would appreciate being able to live it :)
