Great food and service. This place is always busy but the wait is never very long. The servers are always there to make sure you have what you want at your table. One of the best Coney Islands in the area

I come here almost every Sunday for breakfast. Owner is super nice, place is CLEAN and food taste good. They're not your average coney. Definitely recommend.

Pretty good breakfast and my waitress was excellent. The food was cooked very fast, portions were generous and the food quality was very good however they used cheese sauce rather than real cheese in my omelette. They accommodated my low-carb needs well with tomatoes and cottage cheese instead of toast and home fries. I would go back for sure and ask for real cheese and my omelette. There were a couple other tables with kids and the waitresses and management treated children very nicely which created a great atmosphere for all.

Having been to Athenian Coney Island, every other coney island now pales in comparison- by a long shot! Athenian is by far the best! First of all, when you walk in it certainly doesn't look like a Coney Island- the decor feels new, modern, and nicer than any other coney i've been in. Secondly, the food is just better. Their greek salads are fantastic- their greek dressing is the best, and the pita bread is addictive. The wait staff is ALWAYS super friendly and nice. Highly recommend Athenian Coney Island, but fair warning, it will spoil any other coney island for you because it's that good!

Extremely efficient, very friendly staff, great food, and also quite pretty on the inside. TVs also inside so you don't miss your favorite game.

Ordered the flaming cheese, grilled chicken pita, original gyro, and cheese fries tonight and everything came out perfect! Glad we live close by we'll defiantly be back.

My daughter used to work here and we've been semi-regulars ever since. This is a typical Coney with typical Coney food, albeit always high quality. If you like Coney's you won't go wrong here, service, food, cleanliness are all consistently good.

This is your average coney. The portions are large and the food is good. I got a giant spinach and feta omlette and it was delicious. They only bring you out 2 jellies for your toast, and they bring the crappy flavors (grape and mixed berry) so I had to request blackberry. I hate when places keep the good stuff hidden! The booths were a bit small too. We had 3 people and my mom and I (neither big people) were awkwardly leaning away from eachother the entire meal. A good place to go if you're in the area!

Meh . The pasta fragole soup tasted like spaghetti-o's and very salty. The lemon rice soup - also not good and seemed out of a can. The three of us in our party did not finish any of our cups of soup. Spinach pie was clearly microwaved because it was unbearably hot at first and the bottom of the pie was rock hard. The Athenian pita was good but it would be very hard to screw it up. Also, how hard is it to season fries? They we limp, bland and nothing special. Their prices (2 dollar signs here on Yelp is accurate) were clearly necessary to pay the bill for the very high end bathroom fixtures and features. So if you go here at least go in to the bathroom to see what you're paying for. Ok, to give them a little more credit the dining room was also nice but I also don't plan to see a water feature on the wall in a Coney Island restaurant. Won't be back.

Best coney ever. Everything is great- Athenian Pita, Olympian Pita, and Chicken Lemon Rice soup are my fav. Also, we always buy bottles of their greek dressing because it is THE BEST!

This place is Rock Solid! It has an upscale feel with it's modern super clean interior. The service is outstanding and the owner(s) runs this place the way a great restaurant SHOULD run. The food is very good and you can tell that they use high quality fresh products. I have eaten here many times now for breakfast, lunch and a few dinners...You can't go wrong here. Some may claim the price may be on the high side for a Coney Island restaurant...even if it may be on the high side for cost...the value is in the quality and the service! ...no question, you get what you pay for here. They have never disappointed!

The staff is friendly which is why the 2 stars; otherwise it would be 1 star. Ordered their Meatloaf special - unfortunately, not a good choice. The meat was very pale looking and no sauce whatsoever. Took a couple of quick bites and was not appetizing at all. The mashed potatoes were cold. Also came with green beans that had a funky taste. Overall, definitely not an item that should be on their regular menu.

It's a coney island with a coney island menu. Hot dogs, Greek salad and chicken lemon rice soup. The difference here is that the decor is far classier than the average hot dog and chili joint. It's the kind of coney island you can bring your mom to. You'll also note that the prices here are considerably more expensive than say a Duly's or a Pete's. I ordered the gyro and it was good size but toppled the $8.00 mark and that was without fries. Service here was very good but I did have to shake my server down for a coffee refill when we were the only customers in the place. The servers were doing their between-rush duties. No big deal, she was very friendly. Coney for the most part is coney. While I have no problem recommending this place, I probably won't be back.

Great food at any time of day. They are quick as well. The girls at the front checkout could speak up a bit at the counter but all in all very friendly! Will continue to dine here.

My favorite coney to go to for breakfast. One of the more pricier coneys to go to but it's really good!

  • Misty T.

We were regulars here for the five years we lived in Novi (just moved a few weeks ago). We ate at Athenian every Sunday for lunch and at least one other weeknight for dinner. The owner and staff are the friendliest people around. The service is quick - even when packed, the wait for a table was never more than about 10 minutes. The food was great! My daughter's absolute favorite menu item was the lasagna - she ate it almost EVERY time we were there. I generally ordered breakfast or a garden burger, but also tried several other menu items - all were delicious. We were so sad to leave Novi and Athenian, and we will definitely stop back in if we are ever in the area!

1st time here, didn't even know about this location. It's kinda swished into the end of a strip plaza.. Went for lunch, seems like i was the only person that did Not know about this place, cause it was packed! Very clean, excellent fast service, good food! Nice combos for a good value & price! Extra bonus... 1 of my favorite (stupid expensive) bracelets, unlatched & feel off.. I had NO idea i lost it! The man that was cleaning tables as guests left, run out & brought it to my car! Wow!! Super surprised!! Not only do they clean under the tables after each guest.. They are super honest!! Bonus star goes to him!! Thank you!! (& yes i am getting the latch fixed!)

  • Gretchen D.

It was okay. Decent coneys but I have had much better. Mediocre fries. decent Greek salad. Service was decent. Prices a bit on high side but it's Novi.

  • Brent H.

Nice facility that appeared new and clean. The service and wait staff were outstanding at their job and wonderfully friendly. The food itself was well done and quality for the diner type food they sell. Wish this place was near my home because we would make it a regular stop.

One of my favorite coney islands in the area. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is they don't have hummus and garlic spread. Super fast service, lots of servers, and generally clean. They do a ton of business and are really busy on Sunday but the wait is never long. I love the breakfast burrito with gravy, sounds strange but is tasty. Vintage salad is big and has plenty of cherries and walnuts, unlike some others who just sprinkle them on.

  • Ornella B.

We went for breakfast here again with some friends and I sampled the breakfast burrito as it is one of my hubby's favorites here. I must say, YUM-O!! It might be my new favorite also!! Upon arrival, it smelled amazing and was enormous ( I had half left to take home) . I ordered it without sausage or ham and extra crispy bacon. They got it just right. It was stuffed with bacon, hash browns, scrambled eggs, and cheese. It also comes with sour cream, salsa, and sausage gravy if you like. I prefer the salsa, it is perfectly spicy and cuts thru the savory richness of the burrito. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

  • Paul A.

Keep in mind this is a diner/family type restaurant, but the stars are worth it. I had the gyro platter with fries. The lamb was wonderful and the fresh tomatoes/red onions made the package. My only complaint was it only came with 1 pita bread when, with the portions of lamb, 2 were required. The pita bread was soft and fluffy making it a great carrier for the lamb etc.

  • Mick H.

Servers were not friendly, got seated in the worst spot in the restaurant right next to the Kitchen entrance. The prices are rather high for a coney. All in all I would not go back, especially since there is a plethora of coney's around.

    (2)
  • Katie M.

Not my favorite Coney. The staff (owner maybe?) is really nice. Plenty of outdoor seating and I like how they put pillows out for you on the chairs because let's face it, whoever bought the outdoor chairs obviously did not sit in them first - NOT COMFORTABLE! Food was quick and good but higher priced than other coney options, serving not as grand either.

    (3)
  • Evie B.

Very friendly service. Busy but service was fast. Chicken gyro was good. Plenty of chicken - not skimpy or too much. The chicken was a bit bland. The gyro sauce wad good and plenty. Son had the chicken strips. Cooked to perfection and tasty. We shared an order of fries. Yummy- hot- crisp.. I got a chili special for my husband to go. Yummy!!! I thought the prices were a bit steep in comparison to other coney restaurants, but it's Novi and I'm sure rent is expensive. The prices on the online menu aren't accurate. I'm looking forward to returning and trying some of their salads and sandwiches.

  • Falon K.

This is where my family goes every Sunday. The food is fantastic. I would say it's an upper scale Coney Island with excellent quality food. The owner greets everyone that walks in and is so friendly. I love supporting small businesses especially when they are as kind as the gentleman that owns this restaurant. I usually get. Greek skillet when coming to Athenian and it's my favorite skillet I have ever eaten. Everything is so fresh and tasty. Not to mention, the service is fast and the staff is very welcoming and very pleasant. Next time you're in novi, enjoy Athenian!

  • Asianzing S.

Excellent hot lemon rice soup. Service is fast and the greek salad is fresh. Delicious Coffee and a great wait staff.

  • Taryn G.

Really great place to stop in for a quick coney dog. The service was extremely quick! From the time we walked in the door we waited less than 10 minutes to be served drinks and be served our lunch. I had the coney dog combo. Prices were reasonable and the place was clean and had a cool, chic interior design.

  • Roxi H.

I'm kind of a coney island junkie, I mean who can argue with affordable comfort foods, but I have say say that Athenian is the nicest coney I've ever been to by a mile! The restaurant is very clean and well decorated. If you go whatever you do male sure you get the fries!

  • Shannon A.

Delicious food & great fast service every time! That's what you can expect from this Coney! The Chicken Lemon Rice soup here is awesome and I love their Greek Salad! Pretty much the best Gyros around and they are always steaming hot with crisp cool toppings! I recently took my boyfriend there for lunch and as a former cook himself he immediately noticed how spotless the place is... He thought it was the cleanest kitchen he'd seen! You'll often find the owner walking around to tables asking how everything is! It's easy to see why this place is full of regulars! They even have very nice outside seating in the summer! Excellent choice for a casual meal... You won't be disappointed!

    (5)
  • Scott C.

Great location, but was disappointed in the service and the food. My table was dirty, my omelette was overcooked and dry and the service was inattentive. Perhaps they were just having a bad day, but my experience was not a good one.

  • Connie G.

Great service and good food .... The decor is a delight for a Coney Island very nice.... Coffee cups are huge.... My eggs were perfect..... I enjoyed the atmosphere and the prompt service....the location is conveniently located and parking is plenty....in the summer there is outside seating....

  • Kayla W.

So delicious! Good variety at a decent price. Place is clean, modern, and not drab at all. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • Gary A.

It's an okay place - that about sums it up. Its been around for a number of years, and recently they updated the interior and got them some railings to make an outside patio. Its a typical dinner, breakfast specialist on weekdays. Smallish menu for a dinner, but they cover the basics. Decent food - its tough to screw up breakfast. Not a lot of charm, More of a professional crowd, while in other places you see more blue collar people. Wait staff is young and sleepy, at least for breakfast. Interesting that they make you ask for non-sugar products - you need to ask for them, and they give you the jam for your toast - most places have a jam carrier. Either you trust your customers or you don't.

Always, always good food & great service. You can tell that they care about keeping the restaurant clean because it's always spotless. Clean floors, tables, and restrooms always make for a better experience when I'm eating out (that sounds funny, I think). The coney dogs are a Detroit classic taste that compares with Lafayette in downtown Detroit. There's generally a good selection of deserts too. I'd highly recommend as a family style experience Coney Island.

  • Gust A.

The lemon rice soup was one of the best I have ever had and I am Greek!! The Greek omelet, add spinach, was large and cooked perfectly. Service was good and the restaurant was clean. I felt the restaurant provides a good value for the money spent.

  • Bill E.

This is what I would consider to be a somewhat upscale Coney restaurant. The decor is nicely done and the available alfresco dining is excellent. Definitely my favorite breakfast spot (have only tried the breakfast so far). For me, they have some of the best regular pancakes in town. Their combination of ambience, great service and great food makes this a very regular stop for me. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed!

This is a staple for my family in Novi, and now that I live in Los Angeles, it's a must when I come home for visits. When I come back for a week, I go to Athenian Coney Island at least 2 or 3 times while I am back in Novi. When I need to get my Coney Island fix, this is Coney to go to. There is always plenty of parking, and although it's busy during the main meal hours, we never have to wait very long. They turn tables around quickly, and the wait staff, bussing staff, and cooks are always on point. When my dad was still alive he always enjoyed going to Coney Island, and he always felt welcomed and knew he could get a great meal there. John the owner knows us all by name, and always stops and has a friendly word when he sees us, and asks after us. As far as the ambiance, the place has always gradually gotten more and more updated every time I come back in. It's a really pleasant, clean place to dine, and the food is always fresh and fast. I love the breakfast, and of course the coney's and greek salads. The coffee comes in a large cup, almost a bowl, which is fine with me, because I can't get enough coffee. The servers are all fantastic, and they are all very attentive, nice, and treat us well. Michelle was our waitress recently, and she always does a great job, and just like John, she's always friendly, attentive, and remembers us and asks after us. I figured since I can't miss this place when I'm home, I had to give it the glowing review it deserves! Thank John, and Athenian for the years of great food and service!

Seriously the best coney island ever. GOT eggs cooked perfectly, tasty sausage. They've redone the patio with new furniture and looks nice

  • LO K.

The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because their breakfast is pretty decent. My only complaint is that the last time I was there with my laptop I asked for a booth. It was very early and nobody was hardly there, yet the waitress refused my request. She was very young so I'll chalk it up to poor judgment on her part. I ended up ordering a coffee to go and ate at Biggby's across the street.

  • Chuck S.

The best Gyro I've ever had, ever and I've had them all over the country. The other menu items I've tried have always been good as well. Decent service; they flip tables effectively but you never feel rushed. Don't pass this place up.

  • Susan C.

Probably the most expensive coney I've ever been to - strike one. Skimping on the jelly packets and the napkins - strike two. Really bad food - strike 3. My husband insists that they're a 4 star but need to be knocked down to 3 for the price. I don't know how we can disagree so much on the food, when we got the exact same breakfast. He admits the potatoes were too greasy, but I though they were egregiously so. My bacon had a gamey taste and was overdone to boot. The only positive things were that they got my well-done eggs right (even though they were bland yet greasy - how is that even possible?) and the food came out with lightning speed. I'm pretty sure they are trying to control costs, but it's weird to me that they do not have napkins in a dispenser at the table, and that they bring out two jelly packets per toast order. They were nice enough to swap my grape out for strawberry jam, but seriously, you can't leave the grape at the table and just bring additional strawberry? Also, terse signs on every booth indicate that they are for 2 customers or more from 11:30 to 1:30. My husband posited you have to do that in a densely-populated town like Novi, but I've never seen anything like that anywhere else in the area. I just got a really unfriendly vibe from the place. Positives were nice decor and coffee in huge bowl-shaped coffee cups. Too bad the coffee was beyond weak. Ugh, I'll give this place a pass for any future breakfasts.

I've been to Detroit about a dozen times in the last 3-4 years and have seen Coney Island this or that but had never been in one. They look like a hot dog joing but I prefer not o eat in those places (often). They're EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!! I tried this one out with a friend as it was close to where my last meeting was and then off to the airport. Inside, normal looking place. Very, very clean though. Had a Greek salad and a soup. Salad was good and I'm almost ashamed to say this, the avgolemono soup might be the best I've ever had. It was freakin' incredible. The only negative is that I believe they were keeping it hot in Hell because the bowl almost melted from the heat it was giving off. Damn. Overall, nice simple place, cheap prices but that soup gives them a 4.9.

What can I say... they have really good food, and a really nice waitstaff. The Turkey Reuben is very yummy.

We love Athenians. Very clean, good food, friendly weight staff. Prices are high, but worth it. As Novites we often walk up with the doodle and sit outside. Greta D loves it. Not a fan of the obnoxiously large coffee cups.

This was my first time here, it was good to see they had an option for vegetarians. If I'm in MI again I will stop by.

Its been literally ages since I've been back to Athenian and today I found out why... they are slow and expensive as heck. I stopped by for some quick breakfast carryout. The various breakfasts combos are all probably $2 to $3 more expensive than most any other Coney Island joint. The one thing I do love and have always loved was that The Athenian was always smoke free. Even before the 2010 Michigan Smoking Ban, I could goto the Athenian and sit down without gagging. But those memories can't change my mind about my recent visit. Currently Novi Town Center which the Athenian is a part of, is under de-construction. Literally over 1/2 the place is being torn down for some new Wallymart. IMHO thats a bad idea. Anywho back to the review... They have friendly staff although sometimes to me it seems people are standing around - especially the cooks. If you are not cooking to me they should be doing something like prepping or cleaning. But no these guys like to stand there and watch tv and talk at each other. I got the big mans bfast special combo this time for carryout. the worst part is the price - almost $8 for a breakfast - although it is full with 3 eggs cooked to order, hash browns, 3 sausage links, 3 bacon strips, a side of ham, and toast. I asked for over hard eggs and I got in my togo box - eggs a little underdone (runny) - meaning they are not over hard. the bacon was crispy the sausage however not done enough for me. the ham - hmm mostly fatty and over salted - yuck. the toast was almost mush cuz they do not wrap it separately. I should of got pita bread instead. the hash browns needed salt however. weird. Because of the construction, IMHO the Athenian should offer some lower prices to bring people in. I hate having to re-do my food when i get carryout... at least I have a microwave.

Don't go alone. This is a smallish place, with small booths, nice decor, and decent food. My complaint is the shoddy treatment I received from the owner, despite the fact that I've eaten there about 2x week, and occasionally at night/weekend with the family. When I showed up for lunch today about 1:15 (I try to avoid the rush) the restaurant was still full, so the owner asked me to wait for a few seconds. No problem. I waited 5 minutes. Then, a small booth cleared and was cleaned. Then, a new couple walked in the door. the owner sailed up and immediately sat the new couple in the booth. When I protested, he flatly said that he didn't sit singles in booths during lunch. Never mind that any table he could have sat me at would have fit two as easily as the booth, nor that the lunch hour was almost over. Greedy. I hope those two people spent a lot more than I would have over the forseeable future.

  • Jeff M.

This is a solid coney. A little nicer than the average coney joint. Certainly is a plus that you can sit out in good weather. Standard fare for this type of place. If you are into this type of joint Athenian won't let you down. Hit em up. Great breakfast, chili cheese fries and all the basics.

  • Amy G.

If there is such a thing as an "upscale" Coney Island, this is it. The place is a bit small and gets quite crowded, however, it's because the secret is out! This place has good food and good service. Let's start with the coffee (which is the best place to start, IMO), it is liquid happiness. I have enjoyed both breakfast and lunch foods while dining here and the food is excellent. This place will definitely be our "go to" Coney Island from now on.

  • Jeff L.

I'm not sure there's a huge differences in metro Detroit coney islands, there's just so many of them to choose from, so I guess that make the little things stand out, First off you never have to wait long for a seat, they sit you down as soon as you walk trough the front door, they'll also get your drinks right out to you. The one thing that impresses me is how clean this place is, I mean the kitchen is in plain sight, and the stainless steel shines and is spotless. The food is just a little bit better than some other Coneys I've been to, and the staff is extremely friendly and quick. your coffee will always be refilled.

    (4)
  • Ed G.

Service is good and I like the outdoor seating in the summer. Food is pretty ordinary. They do serve large quantities. Not sure that is a plus given the quality. The fries are on the soggy side.

  • Nathan L.

Great coney island... Like Sarah mentioned I also was a bit hard pressed to go to a new coney island, but I'm glad I did. I had the standard coney with everything and a mini Greek. It was great! The mini Greek is a pretty decent size for a side salad. My wife had the gyro and mini Greek and we both loved her gyro. The meat was very soft and quite delish. If I'm back romping around near 12 Oaks again I'll be sure to stop in.

    (5)
  • Sarah M. B.

Yes, I am indeed a fan. I felt like a traitor going here instead of my usual coney at lunch time but on a 78 degree perfect Friday of being stuck in the office, you go where you can eat outside and that is what I did. Outdoor seating=awesome. I never thought much of this place until I was bullied into going...and a pleasant surprise it was. For the price of 3.95 I got a HUGE egg white veggie pita sandwich, it was so big I was kicking myself for the side of cottage cheese I ordered with it...but for 6.97 it was a great, filling, healthy lunch. However, the pita is not homemade like at my #1 place! I will go and try the greek salad which could boost the star rating...but holy hell, my dining companion ordered one and they do NOT skimp you on the chicken here and it's real chicken not the manufactured spongy frozen chicken. The fries were also SOLID, thicker, but delish. Anytime a coney island has healthy options, is a winner in my book...food is authentic and the service is excellent. With an outdoor dining an option-granted, it overlooks one of Novi's many mini-mall parking lots, it's still outdoors for an hour of 7 others that are spent indoors...I highly recommend a trip here for breakfast, lunch, brunch, or dinner....later summer hours as well.

This place is excellent. We've come here for years and it never disappoints. The corned beef hash is truly homemade, huge portion with 3 eggs. My husband swears by it and measures all corned beef hash against it - and it always wins. The service is lightning fast, I've never had a poorly cooked egg or less than perfect well-stuffed omelet. John, the owner, has meticulously high standards and it shows. The coneys, fries, salads and daily specials are great and we always leave satisfied that once again we made a good choice. All restaurants should be run like this one.

After becoming a repeat customer at this coney island, I am only disappointed when I visit other coney islands. The food is always the highest quality and the service is nice and quick. The owner is friendly and is very personable. Always exceeds my expectations!

If you haven't been to Detroit you probably don't know what a "Coney Island" is. It is not a franchise or a chain, rather, it is a TYPE of restaurant fairly unique to the Detroit metro area. It's basically what's known as a "Greek Restaurant" other places, except the fare is mixed with always mixed with American staples, especially chili dogs which are, for whatever reason, referred to as "Coney Dogs" even though they're not anything like hot dogs from Coney Island in New York. Anyway, as far as Coneys go, this is probably the best in Novi, although it's a little overpriced which is the only reason it gets only 4 stars.

    (4)
  • Cindy A.

This Coney Island did it's job. For that, it got three stars. There wasn't anything that made this visit any different from all the other coneys islands in Southeast Michigan. I mean the important things were there (i.e clean facility, quick bussing of tables, fast service). Our waitress said the same scripted thing to our table every time she walked by...but she topped it off with a smile and a warm up of coffee. So I'm indifferent to the service. As for the food? The skillet was delicious but I felt that it was a bit overpriced for the amount served. So... Three stars. :)

When offering a five-star review, I am taking into consideration that I am rating a Coney Island....And as a Coney Island, Athenian really is "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" The updated décor is very pleasant by contrast to the expected diner atmosphere, and clanking dishes of a typical coney place. I found it impeccably clean throughout, including the bathrooms, which gives one an added element of confidence in where they are eating. The lively staff of fresh-faced young servers were all doing an admirable job, and keeping the dining room clean and neat. I ordered a pretty typical dish, the Chicken Gyros Platter, which maybe is a buck or two more than usual, but money well spent on all the elements of the dish being "top shelf" The Mini Greek salad featured rich, crisp dark green Romaine, with fresh creamy feta, and the fries are the battered type, which is not my preference, but were served piping hot and fresh. The sandwich itself was sublime, a careful construction of freshly grilled chopped chicken breast on a warm, fresh fluffy pita, accented by ripe tomatoes, and very fresh red onions. I feel like I'm reviewing a finer dining establishment! I have to remind myself....It's a CONEY ISLAND! I must say, the best I've ever been to. It's obvious that the proprietors at Athenian value their customers, and cultivate repeat business with their attention to detail, and they can expect repeat business from me, even if it's a few miles out of my way.
