I've eaten at worse places, but our food was not that great. I might try it again for a redemption, but not the same items. The deep fried cauliflower was pretty good. The marinara sauce tasted very watery. My diet Pepsi tasted funny - like it was non-diet. My chicken parm was almost inedible. The portion size was giant, unfortunately the chicken was so dry and overcooked I barely ate a third of it. The chicken tasted like it was either fairly old or it was reused from a previous order (or mistake). I did not take the rest home. The side salad was decent, the side of vegetables was not good. The vegetable mix was the typical frozen mix of carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. It looked as if the cooks simply added some water and microwaved it. The fries were a little under cooked in the middle. The bread was was hard and not fresh. A lot of food for a reasonable price; however, the food was not very good overall. My friend ordered the lasagna. The portion size was gigantic. It was 2-3 times larger than we expected. It contained a very heavy portion of beef in the sauce. Some people would probably love this, but we are not big beef eaters so it was overkill. The coleslaw was okay, but it had more of a potato salad consistency. The server was friendly and the food came out reasonably fast. Maybe the burgers and other entrees are much better.

So here's the deal. The Douglas House Saloon (or the Dog as I have heard it called) is a great little bar that you should definitely check out if you are in Houghton. There's a nice bar, a pool table and a machine of Michigan pull tabs (which I always end up getting). The drinks are always good and the best thing about The Dog is their pickled eggs. I had never had a picked egg before trying one at The Dog, and their pickled eggs have made me a believer. For only $.75 you get an egg pickled to perfection served with jalapenos and hot sauce. There is no better combo than a pickled egg and a beer at The Dog to start your night off right!

The dog is covered in dark wood and is beautifully lit in the evening. I'm glad I checked out this down to earth pub. The only backside is the bartenders can be rude and slow at times. Bring your extra quarters for pool and darts.

The Dog (as the Douglas House Saloon is known) is the standard by which I now measure every neighborhood dive bar. To really appreciate the Dog I think you have to live in Houghton. The greatest thing about it is the Cheers-like atmosphere - you are guaranteed to run into people you know when you go there. Friday and Saturday nights are basically college night and get really crowded, but I always really enjoyed hitting the Dog on random weeknights, when things are a little more mellow. Furthermore, the bar tenders are a little cliquey - once you get to know them, though, the service is top-notch. Once they know you're not a douche and tip well, you'll get great drinks FAST. The drinks are incredibly strong and CHEAP. Not just cheaper than other cities, but cheaper than most other places in the Houghton-Hancock area. It has never cost me more than $20 (that includes tip!) to get drunk here, and I can hold my own. The historical decor makes for a cool atmosphere, and the free popcorn helps soak up a bit of the booze or beer you are downing. If smoke bothers you, don't show up here on a Friday or Saturday night! If I ever come back from somewhere smelling like cigarette smoke, I still saw "Ew I smell like the Dog!"

While I was up at Tech this was pretty much the place to be for the college laid back crowd. Now that I am just a visitor I find that I go back time and time again for cheap beer, pickled eggs, and the same old songs on the jukebox. The atmosphere has a certain quality that is like memory lane every time I step back in the bar. Its a great place to fill up on popcorn or even spend the whole night drinking and somehow not spending more than 30 or 40 dollars. I would tell anyone who has a moment to make sure they stop on in, grab a pickled egg with some tabasco, salt and a jalepeno slice.. drink a cheap beer...listen to some Stones on the jukebox and if "T" is still working there make sure you say hi because he's the best bartender ever!

A must stop for all tourists looking for the Houghton feel. This bar is small but has a great German pub feel. Yes its crowded on the weekends but most places in Houghton are. Most students and locals gather here around 8 and are gone around midnight. Weekdays are a great time for getting a beer and a pickled egg without the hassle of a crowd.

We were in town for our league hockey tournament. We usually go to another establishment down the street. The 'Dog House' was closer to our hotel and was very welcoming. We ended up closing the place down both nights!

Pretty great pub, a must if you're in town for a drink. They have 75 cent pickled eggs, really good. They have a pool table in the back and normal bar stuff everywhere else. The bartender is always attentive and the drinks are reasonably priced. Some call it a dive, but I'd say it is more of a locals bar than a dive.

Fun-college party atmosphere. Gets very busy late night. Kind of dirty.

Houghton's a small place, so you can get what you want from this bar depending on what time you go. 7am - noon: armando's breakfast crowd noon - 4pm: not sure 4pm - 8pm: older crowd, jukebox disabled 8pm - 2am: world class SH1TSH0W Definitely had some of the best college times here. This place is at it's best, or worst, on senior walk day in the spring. Never saw puke in a urinal before, it's the last bar on the walk. Protip: house party until 5:30am, go haggard to suomi's for breakfast at 6am. 7am go to the dog for bloody marys and pool.
