Excellent food especially for a small town. Order off the special Chinese menu. I had the spicy boiled whitefish soup - incredible! Great potstickers and Shanghai rolls!

Nice come as you are place to eat. Tucked off the beaten path with great parking. I had the Mongolian Beef with fried rice and a glass of pinot noir. Decent beer/wine list, fast service. The beef looks to be a nicely marinated flank steak, nice and tender. Dinner portion is a good size, I hate getting too much food when I travel, my goal is not to have to deal with a to go box or have them toss good food! Wish the menu had a vegetarian noodle option that is not Pad Thai - allergic to nuts and was really in the mood for a noodle dish.

The food is usually good when you eat in but when you get take out it is very hit and miss. Today we spent $45 and the appetizers were good but the entrees were awful. Tried the Kung Pao Chicken and it was all chicken and water chestnuts, no "mixed vegetables" like the menu says. Would have been better off making my own.

For a small town, this chinese restaurant is superior. Personally, I think this one is better than many chinese restaurants in chicago. They have a secret chinese menu in addition to the public english menu. They also have a free wifi named "fortune cookie is the password". Five stars restaurant no doubt. ------- I changed the rating from 5 stars to 3 stars in 2015, as the quality declined dramatically. The food is not as good as before, the food amount is getting smaller, the price is getting higher. The service is still good.

Do NOT judge a book by its cover! BEAUTIFUL restaurant, trendy Asian accoutrements, mood lighting, seating that speaks to the intimate and the party. Ok food, lots of choices and sometimes that affects the quality. The appetizer, Crab Rangoon was, not...1/4 tsp of cream cheese...and bottled duck sauce to go with, REALLY? The pot stickers seriously overdone and then singed. The white rice with the meal was not sticky nor the fried rice, fried and no vegetables in it. My Hot Mi-Lo Combo entree was, not hot in any sense and the amount of sauce made it more soup than entree. The Lemon chicken breast was an aaa cup and over cooked...lemon sauce was good. Server goofed on the salad dressings, no soup with meal....ala carte only. Dessert was a saving grace, Carrot Cake was awesome, and chocolate lava cake superb. Prices were outrageous for the quality of meals we recieved. Ming's buffet food looked better. Our guest gave us the run down on the restaurant's history and we're sorry we missed the restaurant's heyday ... next time we'll try dad's new Asian fusion, it has to be an improvement.

This place serves the kind of Chinese food dishes that you can find at almost any buffet or Chinese place - but they present it fantastically. It looks great and tastes amazing. In addition, the place is easy to find and the interior is gorgeous. Definitely looks like a high end restaurant. The prices are a lot like a high end restaurant as well, though. As a broke college student, I wish I could afford to go there more often.

Good Chinese, not the best I have ever had but the best I have ever had was in Philadelphia in a Chinese neighborhood, so you do the math there. For Michigan, not just Houghton, this is quality and classy. I had the Orange Beef and it was quality all the way around. I wish I would have had some General Tso's instead because I like more spice than sweet, but it was good none the less. If you order the lunch special you will be surprised by how much good food you end up with for $8. All around worth the stop.

As always, the food was fantastic. We tried the edamame tonight and found them to be absolutely delicious. We regretfully let them get cold as our entrees arrived and we started to dig in and they were not good cold.

Lotus Wraps have been discontinued, soooo bummed. They were my favorite item on the menu!

Thank you so much, owner David W and staff!! You provided the best birthday celebration in a long., long time for two very deserving , and now happily well-feted, folk. The party of eight, with very discerning and "difficult" tastes and preferences, was very happy and continue to sing your praises! Your cuisine made the event!. We will be back, often.

Went there with a large group of 16, some being Asian. Seating upstairs which is perfect for a group, still being intimate , helping with sound and ease of entrance. Enough room to still stand and socialize as well. I believe we had just one waitress but maybe a second helped a bit. All I do know was the service was amazingly fast and friendly. Drinks came quickly, had some time then to work thru the menu(s). I say menus because there is a menu in English and one in an Asian dialect. The menus really are different in that the Asian menu tends to be a little more authentic than the English. Though I received several suggestions from some of the Asian guests I went with the Pad Tai from the regular menu. This is where I was a little disappointed. I was told the Asian menu items can be very hot. OK I like spice but not over the top. Have had authentic Asian Cuisine and it can be VERY spicy. I ask the waitress, she said there were 3 levels of spice and the lowest really wasn't spicy at all with the 3rd showing a hot spicy pepper so I went with two trying to get a feeling from the waitress of how hot that was. Well it was not really spicy at all. Not sure if it was made wrong or that level is just so easy to handle. Wish the waitress could have described better or maybe offered something at that spice level to try. Otherwise the food came out quickly and hot, first some appetizers which were so so. Then the main course and the portions were great. Could have easily ate less and brought some home. It was nice to see the Kirin beer there as well as local selections. Would go back, repeatedly, especially with an Asian friend to try the other menu. Easily the best sit-down Asian cuisine in the UP.

I rarely ever give a place 5 stars, but this was the best Chinese restaurant I have been to in years. Full bar with great Mai Tai's, very friendly efficient service and most of all excellent food. They even made some of the best vegetable egg foo young for someone in our group, which was not on the menu. The garlic beef had real beef and fresh vegetables. No mystery meat here. The sauces were excellent. I wish we had a place this good at these prices back in the Chicago area. We will definitely be back when in this area again.

I'm just going to echo what's already been written: The food is amazing (best asian in the Copper Country), the food is cheap (cheapest asian in the Copper Country) and the interior design is perfect (best in the U.P.). It just doesn't seem like something you would find in a small town, but it really is something special, and something I think the community has already embraced. It's been packed every night since it opened and as long as people are willing to not write it off because their new staff isn't perfect yet, it will take off. However, some people are too small minded up here to give it that recognition that a brand new non-chain restaurant might need a week or two to work out kinks. Overall, it's somewhere I'll go regularly, and somewhere I'd feel very comfortable sitting and having a drink. (The bar does have a Japanese beer that was good)

My daughter was home from New York and wanted to go to Houghton for the day to show her husband her college town. She worked at the Ming for a short time while in school and heard it reopened as Bambu. I also traveled to Houghton once a week and got take out often. Well, we stopped for lunch and all had a different lunch special. First off, let me say the place inside looks amazing and a lot of work and money was spent to make it look so chic. Cool woodwork and booth designs. I just completed a high end bathroom at home and have a good idea what was spent on just the bathrooms here................very nice!!! Nice to see many dishes from the Ming still on the menu. Food was great, pleantiful and very reasonable. Everything tasted very fresh and looked terrific. Our service was fantastic as our waitress was very attentive, answered all questions without hesitation, and was just as pleasant as can be. For the life of me , I can't remember her name. I think Houghton is quite lucky to have such a place, and I wished we lived closer. Our town has nothing like it. Congrats on a winner Bambu!!! Slammer!!!

To start, I definitely advise taking the time to eat in, rather than just take out. The restaurant is nice and quiet, and a great place to have a nice casual meal with friends. The menus and portions are the same, but I love the atmosphere here. A lot of their entrees come with a lot of vegetables, which if you are into that, then awesome. Me personally, like my entrees to be mostly meat, but there are a few things I have tried that meet my preference perfectly....their sesame chicken and their honey chicken, the latter which is just exquisite! Their fried rice sides do not have any veggies or anything in it but it is still a good solid fried rice. The only appetizer I have had is their crab rangoon, which in the restaurant comes with this amazing tasty dipping sauce. When we got them take out there was no sauce, but we didn't ask so maybe it's available on request, I'm not sure. The entree fried rice DOES have the traditional veggies in it and the meat is VERY generous. I had the chicken friend rice, and I am VERY picky about friend rice and it was just perfect. Fluffy and nice solid strips of chicken, and a nice huge portion....I had dinner one night and a big lunch the next day! I would really like to see them expand into other asian cuisine, like sushi, they have miso soup on the menu, however from what I have heard from friends, they never have it available, which is sad, because I think they would do an amazing job with it, if their Chinese cuisine is any indication.

The interior looks nice and has some friendly staff members but I'm not quite sure what the fuss is about with this Chinese restaurant. The dishes are a bit overpriced and bland for my taste. As Yelp's 2-star description says: Meh, I've experienced better.

Good service and good food, but prices a little higher and portions are a bit smaller than other Asian eateries in the area. The atmosphere is modern and very pleasant compared to most Yooper joints. I would probably want to go more often, but I always end up at Hunan for my authentic Pork Belly and Eggplant on their special Chinese menu.

We were invited to a special preview/training session on Friday. Even though it was the first full run through with the staff, the food was amazing, the service was fairly smooth and the ambiance was top notch. I sampled the egg drop soup, lettuce wraps, crab rangoons and cashew chicken. The egg drop soup was so flavorful. The crab rangoons were light and crispy. The lettuce wraps were a wonderful surprise. I wasn't sure was I was getting into when I ordered them, but they were probably my favorite thing! The cashew chicken was light and super flavorful. All in all, it was an amazing first experience, and I will definitely be going there often.

Regarding Monk, Alan, and Monica. I am from Chicago and my standards for cuisine are quite high. I have traveled all over the world and have eaten very good food. I will say that Bambu beats all of, what I consider to be "crappy corporate chain restaurants" like P.F. Chang's, yuck! Bambu also beats several very high end Chinese restaurants that I've eaten at in Chicago because Bambu is small and focuses on quality. The menu has something for everyone and the recipes taste refined. Meaning, someone put thought into each dish. Monk mentioned not having enough garlic in his dish. Next time ask for more garlic! Otherwise, Bambu would upset someone who doesn't want as much garlic as you. Here's another trick, ask for a little extra vinegar in that garlic dish as well. I found out Bambu offers an "requested" authentic traditional Chinese menu for Asian customers which is very good, but, printed in Chinese! The staff is extremely friendly and you can tell the owners take pride in the establishment. So, like most reviews about a good restaurant, you will occasionally get some people who really don't know what they're talking about. Or, they're so used to eating substandard food, they don't know any better. I will say for certain. I would never risk my health eating at The Hunan or The Ming Buffet. I've had rancid food at both before. And, both have been closed for multiple health violations as well. True story.

I've been back twice since for lunch specials- had the vegetarian vegetable curry- the curry sauce is really good, and the dish includes a nice variety of vegetables and tofu. Small portion of main course. Lunch comes with soup and crab rangoons, which make for a big lunch for a good price if you eat those but neither are vegetarian.

Absolutely great. Incredible atmosphere and fantastic food to go with! Service was great, although my server seemed nervous.... For the amount of food my friends and I ordered I was shocked to see the bill. The price is more the reasonable, satisfying and perfect for all "foodies" or "travelers". Recommended for everyone! I would go again!

I came here based on Yelp ratings and it is definitely a nice place. The place is extremely welcome, the staff is very friendly and fast with our orders. Also the decorating makes the dining experience a nicely sophisticated one. We came in for lunch so both of us got lunch specials, they were even nice enough to accommodate a special order on my part. I wound up getting the Hunan chicken lunch special with hot and sour soup and my mom got the Kung pao 3 also with hot and sour soup. The soup had a nice building heat but was a little thick and didn't have as much flavor as hoped. All of the food was very nicely presented and looked very good. A majority of it was but the chicken was oddly rubbery and somewhat unappealing. Otherwise everything was good, nothing I would particularly go crazy over but good. The vegetables were nice and fresh and the spice was good but the texture of the chicken really put a damper on the meal for me. I really do have to commend the waiting staff though, they were very nice and welcoming, I hope to come back and try some other options on the menu and give it a second go.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in town. Love their lunch menu. Delicious and inexpensive. Tried most of their special menu (a more authentic taste) and loved them all. It's a great place to hang out with friends and family. Check out their facebook page as they do post deals on food and beverage.

Being from the 4th largest city in the country, my expectations for Chinese might be a little high. I found the food here edible and pleasant, but not great. Hot and sour soup didn't seem to be freshly prepared (though it was good) and my chicken with garlic sauce, while cooked well, lacked flavor to say the least. I would be willing to give it another try because service was very good and our waitress was very attentive.

First visit here based on Yelp recommendations. The atmosphere is quite nice, more upscale than I expected. The Hot & Sour Soup was very good, as was the Kung Pao 3. The portion was generous. I found it odd that the entree filled the plate & the rice filled a small bowl; no place to really put the two together. Crab cheese was just okay, service was excellent.

I ordered the pepper steak dish and it was excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly and there was a great deal of vegetables as well and they were great. The service was amazing. Our waiter had drink refills on our table before we could even ask. The atmosphere was alright; nothing fancy. The prices seemed reasonable to me. It was a great experience.

I'm shocked at how bad my food was given how many stars this place has. The wonton soup was yellow colored and had heavy egg noodle wontons. A major disappointment, it was basically inedible. For entree I had chicken with vegetables and it was oily and average quality. The veggies were good but they were soaked in the oily sauce so I had to quit eating them. Currently rated at 4.5 stars, methinks no way.

If I had to sum up Bambu in two words, they would be... Flawless Execution. Folks, this is some of the best American-style Chinese food (with a few Thai, Japanese, and most importantly Sichuan classics) you will find in the country. Everything is as fresh as it can possibly be and prepared with what can only be called meticulous attention to detail. Every battered morsel is crisp, every vegetable tender, every sauce seasoned perfectly, heck even the grains of rice are individual and distinct. The Hot & Sour soup is rich and complex and not at all like the white-pepper-spiked sludge you might be used to elsewhere. The mustard hits you like a roundhouse kick to the face (this is a GOOD thing, mind), and I dare you to find a dried red chili seared better than the one adorning my General Tso's (yes, eat that thing, it's good for you). The Crab Rangoon are ethereal, and the house sweet and sour sauce is astonishingly bright and delicate (is it the Maraschino cherries? I think it's the cherries). The presentation is... well, the only word I can think of is reverential. From the stark white plates to the soft spotlights over the table, it's all about the food. And with food this good, it works. That said, takeout is also a fine option; the containers are packed with such care that any loss is quality (like things going soggy on you) is absolutely minimal. My Dan-Dan Noodles were amazing even after two days in the fridge- the noodles were thick and un-sticky, the sauce/topping was coherent, and the cucumber and sprouts were still fresh, crispy and intact. There's no reason they should have remained that good; I'm convinced there was some kind of sorcery involved. I really can't heap enough praise on this restaurant. If I had to complain about anything, it'd be that dining here costs me a nine hour drive to the remote and frozen north.
