Who am I to judge another restaurant experience? These people give their heart and souls to these places...

Pretty good food for a coney. Service was fast.

This is a great breakfast/lunch location. Food is good, prices are right, the waitstaff is frendly. They are now opened after 4 PM, and on Friday and Saturday even later. Good place to eat and quick service. And definitely cheaper and better tasting food than Como's.

Hambo is probably one of the best coney islands I've been to. We always get the same waitress and she's very friendly. I've had breakfast and lunch here, and neither disappoints: it's the classic, great tasting coney food you're used to. They have big windows so you can watch woodward as it happens & the walls are decorated with Detroit's sports moments. To add to it, during the seasons, their tvs are tuned to our home teams. If you can't decide what to eat, and want to save, stop in at Hambo. An extra treat: a free dumpop while you're paying your bill at the register.

Got to agree with the other reviews here....the service at Hambo is excellent. The waitress remembers exactly what I order.....and I'm in the place maybe once every other week. Honestly, great service. Food is simple and delicious......prices are inexpensive.....service is fast. I highly recommend.

Friends had a rehearsal dinner here for their wedding and it was great. Great service, place to ourselves. A great time.

I was here when I first moved to Ferndale and I wasn't a fan but I think it's improved quite a bit. The staff was super friendly, almost chirpy and cheerful, on a Sunday morning. We ordered some pancakes, corned beef hash and a couple dogs to go. Everything was pretty solid. The corned beef hash was really tasty although likely out of a can which is fine with me....that stuff is pretty good. The hot dogs were griddled nicely and they may have even been Koegel dogs. The Coney dog I took home was pretty good. While the food is your standard diner fare the service was great...exceptional really. Their hours are a little wonky but if you need some quick sustenance and they're open you should give them a try. 3.5 stars

I had a cheese omelette with very little cheese and cold toast. And the server was distracted.

I can't stand Hambo. I have friends that love coming here, but I stopped making the trek and I refuse to go anymore. The place is dirty, it smells like a filthy greasy spoon, the service is subpar, and the food is horrible. I always feel like crap after eating here, and it's not cheap for BS, diner, garbage food.

Awesome staff and super friendly service. The food was very fresh and large portions without breaking the bank. My wife and I really had an awesome experience here. Has a great local mom and pop vibe too.

OK. The first review wasn't great nor was my experience. Shortly after writing the review I was contacted by the owners to buy my next meal for a second chance. I took them up on the offer. The second experience was much better. Although they went out of the way or me as they knew who I was, I saw similar treatment of the other guests leading me to believe that it was not unique to me. We ordered 2 breakfasts (Scrambled eggs and meat....all good) and I a Reuben. The Reuben was not my best ever but it was pretty good. I met the owner and their family, all of whom were genuine and nice people. I would definitely return.

Went there for dinner with my fiance, we had the Greek salad and a farmer's omelet. The food was delicious and the service was excellent; we felt like we were part of the family!

I went here today with my boyfriend for the first time (our original plan was to go to The Fly Trap but the wait was too long). When we walked in the place was almost empty, which should have been our first clue. I got the southern omelette with hashbrowns and he got one of the breakfast specials that came with 3 meats, eggs, and hashbrowns. The amount of time we waited for it seemed long, especially being that we were one of the few customers in there. None of it was appetizing, just very bland, low quality tasting food. I could barely eat a quarter of my meal. We both agreed that it was just "edible". He ate most of his for the sake of not wasting money. The service was fine, the waitresses were nice. They were giving out free strawberry crepes (or some sort of breakfasty dessert) for Father's Day. It was actually pretty good. Overall though, I was unimpressed and would never eat there again.

Who doesn't love a good Coney Island? When me and the lady are craving a coney dog, we always find ourselves here. Their food always comes to the table piping hot and there's always plenty of it. Great breakfast for a hangover too.

not bad for fourth choice. ended up here after driving around and being met with long long wait times for the places we actually wanted to go (mae's, flytrap, betty's) and settled on this place because we were starving. the food was pretty decent - had the hambo omelette, coney, eggs, french toast, and probably some other sides. prices were really cheap, especially for this area, and service was super good, and very friendly. my biggest complaint would be the hot sauce, if you can even call it that. it came in a squeeze bottle and was just tasted like slightly tangy water. it was awful and not spicy. that made me sad. i'd come here again though if all those other places had a long wait again and i forgot about the hot sauce here.

They are super friendly here. I love it. The food is good diner food and they are super fast. The pancakes and bacon are delish! I just wish they were open later.

I wish Hambos were open more - I honestly think they would do great as a 24 hour coney. But when they are open I quite enjoy their amazing service -- without their level of service it would just be a pretty typical Coney Island but the staff is really amazing- and seems very family oriented. I love the wide array of people in here on any weekend morning - and sitting by the window watching people and traffic on Woodward go by. Their breakfast is good -- eggs, chocolate chip pancakes, or omelets. their chicken finger pita is exceptional, and greek salad also very good. I like going here for the friendly staff, good prices, and consistantly good coney food.

The morning we went here, we had tried every other breakfast place in the area first. We tried Toast, but the wait was going to be at least 45 minutes, and then we tried a place that I think was called "The Fly Trap", and the wait for that was 20. We probably would have waited for that one, except there was a man also waiting there with his wife and ten children, who was very unhappy and very rude. I'm writing this here in the hopes that he reads this next paragraph. This is meant only for him, though you are welcomed to read it if you wish. Dear Angry Man at The Fly Trap: You needn't be so angry. I'm sorry you hate your children and your life, but please do not project your bitterness and disappointment on to strangers whom are now forever going to think of you as "Angry Man at The Fly Trap". I can see your face as you rudely boss me around as to where I am allowed to stand, and all I can think is... poor guy. Poor, angry, guy. Calm down, and tell your sweet children to be quiet. Have a drink later if you must, but be polite in public. Thank you. Hambo Coney Island was where we retreated to when faced with the bitter cold and hunger that was overtaking us. They took us in, offered us seats right away, and fed us promptly. I ordered pancakes and hash browns, both of which were nothing to complain about. The pancakes were standard, but the hash browns were really good. I think. I liked them a lot, anyway. Everyone else seemed relatively content with the food they ordered as well. No one was overly impressed, but neither was anyone disappointed. I was perfectly happy with my meal, and I'm assured that this place has "boss mode" french fries. I didn't try them, but everyone else at the table seemed duly awed. So, you're not going to get a five star meal here, no, but the fries and hash browns are good, and the server was nice and quick. Even if you don't like the food here, at least you're not Angry Man from The Fly Trap. That's a victory any day of the week. (P.S. My boyfriend was facing the street when he asked the question, "So... is hockey a big thing here?"... He didn't realize what was plastered on the walls behind him, but everyone else got a good laugh about it.)

I don't know how long this joint has been here, but it looks and feels like its been a part of Ferndale for decades. Getting to the quick, we love Hambo. It's cheap, greasy breakfast food from folks who feel like family. For years I drove or walked by this place and never gave it more of a thought than "Oh God, those 1982 greenhouse windows are awful, that place must be gross." And to be honest, the greenhouse windows are awful, but my thoughts were really short sighted. Don't judge a book by its cover I guess. Several of my friends started posting about Hambo, then I saw some photos with friends there and then one morning when every other brunch joint was full and we were ravenous, we stopped in. We were hooked. The food is standard diner, the prices are cheap for Ferndale brunch spots, and I've really come to love the staff. They must all be from the same family or have worked together so long that they get along like family. The counter ladies even know me and always make me feel like they are so happy to see me again - and we don't get carry out THAT often. Don't judge Hambo based on their old windows and greasy spoon decor. Give them a chance. You'll be glad you did.

If you like coneys you will like this place. The cheese fries are above average. What more can be said?

This was my first visit to a Coney Island! It was good! We went with a group of 4 for breaskfast Saturday morning. I cannot believe how much food we had! I had 2 eggs, toast, has browns, sausage, bacon, and ham. It was an insane amount of food, and I think it was under $6. I was so full. Everyone else ordered omelets, and wow were they huge! With 4 people ordering full breakfast, all adding on sides, and everyone having a drink, the total bill was still only $31. The waitress was so nice, and everything came out quickly. I can't wait to try more Coney islands!

I just don't get it....this is NOT good food by any stretch of the imagination. Hubby and baby and I ate there a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is Blah.... I have had MUCH better! Hubby had the fish and chips...frozen fish planks and tasteless fries I had Gyro and a side salad. Salad was the saddest little bowl of limp iceberg. Gyro was a block of thinly shaved strips that tasted of a freezer. The only thing that was at least edible was the Wing Ding appetizer...but the baby ate that. Left hungry and sad :( If you could ever think this was a good Coney Island, I think you have to raise your standards! They were friendly though...so I gave them two stars. But friendliness will not fill my belly so I don't think we will be back.

My very first breakfast in Ferndale happened at Hambo, so it gets a bit of a sentimentality vote. I didn't get much a glowing impression from the start, and I still haven't quite determined what the fuss is about here. Hambo is Ferndale's homegrown Coney Island, and given the community, I wish we had something in the model of Lafayette's and American, something with a bitter rivalry to another coney in Berkley or Royal Oak. The soul seems to be rooted in hot dogs, breakfast food, and Red Wings decor. I'm a hockey girl, so bring on the sunfaded memorabilia from the last run to the Stanley Cup. Things are rough around the edges, worn booths and buffed tables calling to the masses. The rest of the schtick fails to warm my heart, though. Plain menu offerings scream grease and bland taste, which unfortunately proved to be the case. I don't want to blot my meal or start thinking salt and hot sauce are food groups. I went for an omelet as the safest choice, only to learn they didn't carry anything to liven up sad eggs and unflavourful veggies: no salsa, nada. Ketchup was the best I could find, a sad squishy puddle in the corner of the plate. Hambo does the basics -- toast, sausage, eggs, chili, anything wedged between bread -- without fanfare or flourishes. I much later learned Toast, The Flytrap, Dino's and The Emory have a lock on the breakfast market for something other than grab and go or a fry fest. I wasn't impressed at all by the food. Unmemorable fare which failed to turn my stomach, left me feeling too full too soon, and really quite flavourless. Hambo's failed to make a convert of me.

This is what it's all about. Good, honest cooking. Quality service. Unpretentious atmosphere. Why bother waiting in a crowded, trendy brunch place when all you really want is eggs, bacon and pancakes? Just give it to me fast, on a plate, minus the garnish and KEEP THE COFFEE COMING. The servers who work here are a treat. They're fun, amiable and never impolite. It's a nice sized restaurant, so you usually won't have a hard time finding a seat. One of our new favorite Coney Islands.

The food is good and the service is better. Often the owners are the two working the floor- husband in the kitchen, wife waiting tables. She is very friendly and takes her time to make you feel welcome. The food was cooked properly to order and delivered to my table fast! My one hang up with Hambo is that I sometimes question their hours. They have an amazing location and it seems like they don't capitalize on the bar crowd as much as they could. You're paying for the Woodward frontage- might as well get your moneys worth!! However, when they are actually open - this is one of my preferred coney establishments.

The Hambo is my go-to place for a cheap brunch or lunch in Ferndale. The staff is super friendly, and remembers your drink order. It's very clean (I can't eat at a dirty restaurant), and their menu is large. My favorite thing there is their omelettes - they're yummy, reasonably priced, and come with hash browns and toast. The owner waits on customers herself, and always has a kind word for everyone. She's the main reason I keep coming back.

This is my FAVORITE Coney Island in all of Southern Michigan, and here is why: 1) Staff is super friendly and consistent. If you come in more than once, they tend to recognize you and make you feel like a regular. 2) The food is CHEAP, but more importantly it's delicious. 3) It's bright and always has a good crowd of customers. 4) Your cup of coffee (or beverage) will never go empty. This is a down-to-earth place. If you're looking for a classy or well-decorated place, then look somewhere else. But it you're looking for good food, good people, and great prices - you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I just went for breakfast and loved it! My wife had the chili omelet and I had the mexican. They were both fantastic, and large enough that we will have leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. The place is very clean and nice with lots of booths. the staff was great and very attentive. We also got a Christmas present from Hambo! We will be back, I think I found my new favorite breakfast place in Ferndale! And not to mention it was cheap...far cheaper than Toast, and not as pretentious!

Nothing special here unless you're really into watching cars on Woodward. Decent food (I had a turkey melt). Staff was friendly. Not fancy - some Red Wings stuff on the walls. Clean.

The waitresses are so nice. Sometimes they give you free cake. They're just like your mother -- if your mother is sweet and works at a coney island. What else can I say? This: The coneys are delicious and the chili fries are delicious and the coke is really cold.

sunday morning breakfast brings us and some gay friends to the Hambo this week. i first walked in and was very happy by one thing. every seat was a booth. those waitresses must be really happy. i used to want to open a restaurant with only tables because i was tired of people "waiting" for a booth. the problem has been solved here. its a little dingy in here and a little torn around the edges. the wall is covered in red wings pics and for some reason a mother theresa hanging over the kitchen. the breakfast was good. i had a greek omlette which came with the gyro meat, onion, feta and tomato inside. it was hot and $5.25 and came with a side of hasbrowns and toast. can't beat that price. the fourth star came from waitresses. these women are so nice! our friends apparently used to come there all the time and hadn't been in in awhile. all the waitresses stopped by to say hello and give them gifts. these were some really, really nice ladies. my coffee was never empty either. love, juston

I would LOVE to give Hambo a 5, but because of the hours I had to mark it down a notch. I am a fan of the Hambo Breakfast! LOVE. Delicious and delightful. The service is AMAZING. Those ladies are the best. My only complaint is that they are not open long enough and are randomly closed. Dear Hambo...please leave us a note when you are gone. We miss you.
