I wish I could give this place 2.5 stars, because it's not quite 3 stars. Sure, the food is good, but it's better if you dine-in. If you order take-away the food is pretty meager and skimpy. I ordered a couple tacos today and they were mostly tortilla, a couple shreds of lettuce, one tiny piece of tomato and one little clump of meat. I could have combined the contents of two tacos onto one tortilla and then possibly matched the size of the tacos Guelaguetza Mexican Restaurant serves. They were tasty, though. Also? What's up with not giving chips and salsa along with take-away orders?!

Excellent service in a quaint setting. My favorite is the steak California Burrito. Yummy !

Forget the too-bright, garish atmosphere..best Mexican carry out! Better than any I've had in Southwest (SORRY but true!) or anywhere! Large portions, fresh ingredients, and tasty sauces. Real Coke and Jarritos, the shrimp quesadillas are amazing..mmm the guacamole!! The chicken chimichanga..there is none higher!! The people are sweethearts...I've even had to bust out my high school Espanol from time to time. And the best part-you'd NEVER expect to discover this treasure amongst the officey storefronts on 9 Mile. The sh*t.

The best Mexican in the area, I would call the place a "Hole in the Wall" but that is part of the character, I am a lover of Guacamole and this is the freshest around (must love Cilantro). I can honestly say that I love the Burritos, the wife always gets a Veggie Mexican Pizza and has no complaints. OH! and the Fried ice cream is freeking wonderful The staff is always friendly. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for good food for a reasonable price.

I enjoy this place. There isn't a lot of Mexican food around this area.. Food is good. Love the fried ice cream. The staff has always been wonderful. Wish it was bigger and more parking. That is the only con I have. Well worth the drive.

I drove out of the way to go here so I could get authentic mexican. Very small lot, horrible parking. Very dumpy inside. I asked to add chorizo to my dish for and extra charge and barely got any, plus it was very low quality. Not authentic at all. Very bland food from the salsa to the chimichanga. The only bright side was that our waitress was very nice.

Easily the best Mexican food outside of southeast Detroit. Prices are reasonable, service is always friendly and efficient. Great place for a weeknight bite.

Great great Mexican food but be careful ordering the women that work here a Mexican decent and sometimes have a hard time understanding me but it's all worth it for those tacos !!

  • T O.

Not a bad Mexican place... good tacos, decent burritos... as far as authenticity, the food is hit or miss. If you are in the area and have a craving for some Mexican food, stop in, but there are a few other places I'd rather go to...

When this place opened it was super great, real Mexican food!!!! I used to go there and the salsa on the table would burn my eyes it was so hot and good! I went there recently and was very disappointed. Nothing was very good, the shrimp in the burrito looked like they were poached? No flavor, all the flavors been dumbed down to accommodate anyone. I got a tamale and it was pretty obviously frozen and heated in a microwave or something. The guacamole was pretty sad too. This place is just a sub par version of El Charo.

  • Mariah C.

Best Mexican around for the price and OMG get the Guacamole and mix it with their homemade salsa

Have the SALSA! I could just drink it! Food is good too.

  • Komal A.

I go here for lunch because i work a few minutes away in Detroit, which doesn't have many non fast food options. They have great lunch specials and you can usually manage sitting down to have a meal here during your lunch break. They're quick with your order so don't let the crowd scare you. This place is usually packed around lunch time. The food has always been great. I enjoy seasoned and spicy cuisine and they've never upset me with under seasoned items. Chips and salsa are addictive so avoid eating even one if you're on a diet! The food is probably not authentic but I do hear most of the staff speaking spanish to each other.

Authentic dishes without having to go all the way to Mexicantown in the "D". Great guacamole. Everything is fresh.

AWESOME! I love this place. I want me one 'dem California Burritos....nom nom nom

  • Kristina A.

Best Mexican carry out around. Stopped in and shared a large coke (in a glass bottle) while we waited. The guacamole is so fresh and not refrigerated I think they might make it while you wait. Veggie quesadillas are pretty good. The burritos are the size of 2 full meals. Staff is always very friendly.

Pretty good if you don't want to drive downtown for Mexican food. I don't like to dine in because I think they place could use a good cleaning. Comparing this to the downtown restaurants, the portions are skimpy - but, take away any comparison and it's a good value for the money.

Very good casual mexican dining, definitely one of the better places around.

    (4)
  • Amy H.

Really good mexican on the east side. Small dining area, no drinks.

    (3)
  • Steve K.

Good place to have Mexican food on the east side without the hike down to Mexican Town. Comparable to Guelagetza a mile down the road. Better atmosphere, much better service than Guelagetza. I have eaten here a few times and it never disappoints. It wont blow you away, but how many down by the bridge do anyways?

  • Kelley S.

First time here. Food was good just needed a lil more spice. Service was good considering they were busy. It is nice to no there is a mexican place with good food in the area and dont have to drive 20 miles.

Great food, great pricing, great service, it's a WIIN WIN WIN!!! Mexican Pizza is amazing as are the Enchiladas Verdes, I get them spicy. The soft corn stewed Mexican chicken tacos are to die for. It's a solid go to for sure

    (5)
  • Hannah M.

Try the mexican pizza! They are the size of an actual pizza if you order a large. If you like really hot food let them know, they have a salsa with your name on it. The other food is pretty good, wouldn't say it was authentic mexican..

  • Mark R.

Excellent food. Not a fancy joint by any means, but you gotta love a place with pictures of Pancho Villa on the wall :) Supreme Burrito is awesome, Mexican Sandwich is also. Service is quick and attentive. Girls are polite, say HI when you come in, and always ask how things are. Never had a bad meal from here. Give it a shot!

There are about 3 or 4 Mexican places around this area but, I think this one is one of the best and most affordable around here. We order a lot from my workplace and today we decided to try this place and it did not disappoint. I had a chile rellano (a la carte) and they even added the meat for free...can't find that anywhere and it was only $3. The flavor was great! Also, had a the chicken chimi...I really love their sauce...very light and almost like a chicken soup base...it went really well with the chimi. mmm. This is one of those hole-in-the-wall places that you wouldn't really know about. I just happened to pass it one day going somewhere completely different and always wanted to try it. Glad we did! Now it's going on our top 10 places to eat in the area and definitely #1 for Mexican!! :)

This mom and pop type Resturant is authentic Mexican food at its best! If you've never been make the trip. The chips are fresh and warm with never ending salsa searched as you sit down. Plenty of choices in the menu from flautas to fajitas and everything in between. The staff is friendly and quick and everything I've ever ordered instantly becomes my favorite. I only scored 4 stars a because parking is so limited and often non-existant.

Tamale and chips and salsa review only.... I eat tamales a lot from the Mexican town area. I work with guys that bring in homemade ones, and also we get them from different restaurants... Plaza Mexico tamales were fresh, hot, flavorful, and not dry. Chips and salsa were average but still better than a lot of places. If you are on the east side and want good tamales this is the spot.

This place is like you are in the yucatan! Best Fajita's ANYWHERE!

    (5)
  • Marie D.

The chicken nachos were disgusting! Absolutely disgusting! The chicken was not seasoned and it was watery. The shrimp quesadilla was good that's the only reason I gave it three stars

  • Hank M.

This is the most unlikely place for a great steak sandwich, its huge and has a unique huge bun. the round mexican fries are pretty good also. its topped with grilled onions and peppers. I have had their mexican food, which isnt bad either

    (4)
  • Jade K.

The best Mexican around. I prefer it over Mexican town. I lived in Michigan for years and visited very frequently! I've even been to Mexico and love their food. Now that I have moved out of state I cannot find Mexican food that even compares.

  • Tony S.

3.5 Stars I was sooo happy when this place opened. Eastpointe really needed a good Mexican restaurant. If there wasn't more competition in the area this place would be 4 stars. I like most everything on the menu. Nothing stands out except some of the Steak dishes have had some surprisingly juicy and tender cuts of beef for the price I payed.

I've eaten here probably 5 or 6 times over the past couple of years, so I'm pretty familiar with the place. This is certainly your typical hole-in-the-wall type of joint (even though it is a stand alone building), but that doesn't mean that it is bad. Actually, the food has been good each and every time I've dined here. Are you going to walk away thinking "Wow... that's the best Mexican food I've ever had"... probably not. But, I don't think you'll leave disappointed in the food either. What I actually "LOVE" about this place is that they carry "Jarritos". If you're not familiar with the name, it's a very popular brand of soft-drink in Mexico. They have a varied selection of flavors (I love the Grapefruit flavor) and it is sweetened with REAL sugar instead of that High Fructose Corn Syrup CRAP!! Also (and perhaps even more enticing), they carry Coke in a real glass bottle that has also been bottled in Mexico (And you don't have to be concerned about that whole "water" issue in Mexico... I know someone who works for "Coke" and they have told me that they have STRICT quality control measures for the water that they use even in their Mexican plants). What that means is... it also is sweetened with REAL sugar instead of that CRAP that we use here in the United States. That should tell you something about the "sad state of affairs" in this country when Mexico offers a SUPERIOR version of one of our most popular products ever! Okay, let me step down from my soapbox and just say that if you are ever in the area... this place is certainly worth stopping by for lunch or dinner. And, you might want to buy a few "REAL" Cokes for the road...

Something sinister happened. Something happened to this restaurant after they re-opened from their kitchen fire. Some of you may have noticed that Plaza Mexico was closed for a significant period of time due to a fire inside the restaurant. Before the fire, the food was sublime. Mexican food is not usually described as sublime but when compared to everything else in the area, it was the best. BEST. I re-visited the restaurant and ordered my favorite dish, the chimichanga dinner. It was awful. The crispy tortilla of the chimichanga tasted rancid, like the oil they had deep fried it in had been sitting around at room temperature for a week. It was so bad I couldn't finish it. The rice was old. Not made fresh that day for sure. The beans were OK but... Overall the experience was dismal. Did this place change owners?? The quality just isn't there like it was before. They won't get my business again.

Best place for Mexican food in the area. The California burrito is always a good choice. The food is fresh and the service is fast and friendly. Only thing to say is the place is small. Very little dining area and very little parking, but you can call and place an order for pick up. Very good portions at fair prices. The food surpasses any other mexican in the area.

  • Christina A.

Some of the best authentic Mexican food that I've enjoyed, an I'm very picky! Prices you can't beat them! I get something different every time I go an it's all been delicious!

  • Debbie F.

The food was good, but nothing memorable. The parking is terrible. If the business around the restaurant were open and you could not use their parking, there would be no place to park. The tamales were good. But again, nothing I would go out of my way to get back to some time soon.

Plaza Mexico is so good! You get so much food for your money. I always try something new when I go there and I have never been disappointed. Everyone that works there is super friendly and nice. I'll always suggest going to Plaza Mexico for mexican food.

I am very picky about Mexican food. This is without a doubt best place outside of south west Detroit for Mexican! It's close, it's reasonable and the food is great! I've never had a bad meal here. My only complaint is I wish they would deliver...but hey you can't always have everything!

Food was good. The Jumex fruit drinks were good. Service was good. And the authentic environment was welcoming. Can't wait to go there again.

Place is pretty good and is a nice Mexican option in the area. It's small and doesn't have that feel of larger Mexican places, but it's also not a chain and presents its own kind of flare. There are a couple tables and some booths that can fit 2 or 4 people. Nothing really stands out aesthetically ...it's pretty cut and dry and about the food. The chips and salsa are good. Actually, I thought the salsa was really good -- probably better than most other places. Wish the chips were a little warmer but it's all good. For dinner my GF and I split chicken fajitas as we were hungry but not too hungry. It was quite good, although I wish they included more grilled peppers as it seemed to be an abundance of grilled onions. Oh well. It came with four flour tortillas, guac, sour cream, beans, rice, pico de gallo ...was quite good. I made two tortilla wraps and finished the rest off the plate with a fork. Quite full. The prices seem to be standard for most Mexican places, maybe a buck of two more expensive. The service was outstanding and the food was delivered quickly, and the waitress brought extra chips and salsa without us even asking. Excellent!! I would give this place a try and get a more intimate experience where it's about the food and not all the other BS that sometimes comes along with going out to eat.

This place is really yummy. As a native East Detroiter (that's right it was East Detroit before Eastpointe) born and raised, I remember when this place was established. I moved out of Eastpointe before ever trying it. 14 years later I come back to Eastpointe to visit family and decided I finally need to stop in. I got carry out. A combo #3 which was beans and rice, a chicken tostada, a beef enchilada, and a pork tamale. The tostada is amazing. If you've ever had a tostada you know that sometimes the shell breaks. You couldn't break this thing. It was crisp, freshand sturdy! Wow! Held my piled high topping and delicious chicken just fine. Then I tried some rice and beans. Rice has a different spice to it I really enjoyed. Can't put my finger on it (more chili powder or cumin?)but regardless good. I only have had a bite of the beef enchilada but that beef is really good. Flavorful, not dry and just how it should be. I'll be happy to reheat and devour the rest at a later point. I'm sure it will be just as good. For a little place in a little town- you gave to make a trip. If something came bring me back to my old stopping grounds, I would allow this place to ring me in. P.S. they have a Mexican milkshake. I will be getting that sometime!

Best mexican food outside of Mexican village. Every thing I've eaten has been fresh and delicious.

***UPDATE*** What has happened? This used to be the bomb now it's a dud. Tasteless salsa had to put half a bottle of hot sauce in to get it past the tomato sauce taste. A mexican pizza was ok but it made me wish it was a taco bell one, again flavorless meat some cheese and jalapenos and tomatoes. My niece's each had a taco plate and usually love tacos, what kid doesn't, but both said these were "yucky".

The food is excellent, authentic Mexican taste. My favorite is the tostada dinner, awesome! Not a fancy environment, but good service, and great food.

Solid four stars!! The food is pretty good and you usually get a decent portion. I get carry out here generally when I come because I work about a mile away. I've tried a few different things. Everything I have had has been decent or very good. They are also fast and friendly. As one of the previous posters mentioned, they do not give chips and salsa with the order. Also, I ordered them one time and I feel like the chips were not made in store (I can't say that 100% but being a fan of chips and salsa, I am fairly certain...) so to me, it wasn't worth the extra couple bucks for that. But I promise you if you start making your own chips (Or change your recipe if you already do), I will be there more often that I already come Plaza Mexico!!!!

I've dined in here a few times. The waitresses are always prompt and friendly. The salsa tastes so fresh. Tonight I ordered the steak fajitas, mostly onion and meat I wish there were more peppers thrown in but they were delicious. The beau ordered tacos and a bowl of chili. He loves the chili there, I think it tastes like hot dog chili, super meaty. I stole a bite of the tamales from my sister and they have a really good corn mixture going on. I might order that next time we're in!

  • Jennifer E.

I haven't been here in a year or so, why? I ordered the pork tamales sadly it had a weird taste like I was tasting metal from maybe the pot they cook it in?? It was truly nasty and the taste was hard to get out of my mouth. Also I noticed they don't give you tortilla chips like the other Mexican restaurant on 10 mile near 94. You have to buy that. I've noticed they charge you for everything to accommodate your order, which also left another bad taste in my mouth. They are unnecessarily stingy and It sucks because this is another establishment in my area that I don't go to anymore nor would I recommend.

Love it here! I eat at plaza Mexico at least once a week! Great food (and a lot of it) for a reasonable price. Plus I love all of the employees! I've never had bad food or service.

Went to this place after I saw a review on the local news about how great they were last year. As a person who used to live in Chicago and got great authentic Mexican food everywhere, this place is kind of Mexican, but nowhere near authentic and not even that great tasting. Ok if your in a rush, but El Charros tastes better than them.

Huge Long black hair in my beans! When I called the waitress over she grabbed my plate and ran in the back..didn't say a word. When she came back she explained that it wasn't her hair (she had long black hair) and it wasn't the chefs hair because his is short. My family and I are all blonde so not sure who she believes the hair belonged to??? When we looked at her with confusion because her explanation made no sense she said..don't worry, I will take a percentage off your meal. She took $3. Off the bill...insulting. I understand this stuff happens in restaurants. What surprised me was that they felt the best option was to deny ownership of the long black (clearly Hispanic) hair. We won't be back to the nasty restaurant .. It started taking a good look around as i waited for my family to finish eating and noticed how filthy it is. This used to be an awesome restaurant..they had a fire and when they reopened it was totally different. Still feel sick. I think the health department might need to pay a visit. Ug.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
