The food here is really wonderful. Chef Don and his brother have some of the best food in the Metro Detroit Area. I recommend the Lamb Chops and Salmon personally. For appetizers, the spring rolls, chicken wings, and potato are to die for. The atmosphere is very chill, very nice-modern but not too modern. Lovely Photographs and art work on the walls. If you want to have a party there, they have an upstairs for that which is great. Its small but not crowded, but when it is full it can be loud. All overall its a great place. ...The only reason I can not give it is because the service is... not good... at all. The waiters and waitresses need some more training or something, it makes the experience horrible, but the Chefs always try to make it right. Definitely should try this place out!

The food is excellent!!!!! The service is just horrific. They always apologize and promise to do better but it continues to decline. 20 minutes to get coffee Your meal comes out in pieces...... Slowly Most times wrong...... Bad service......ALWAYS

I can only rate the brunch. I plan to visit for dinner sometime in the near future. (I want that salmon dish.) The service was good and mostly prompt. The buffet was ok - potatoes (seasoned well, however!), smoked turkey, bacon and ham were kinda cold. The sausages were wrinkled, dried out pathetic things. The coffee was excellent. Again, like I mentioned, I'll be back for dinner and, hopefully, I will have much better things to write. Oh yeah - one more thing - brunch buffet INCLUDES most everything from the back of the house. So, omelettes, pancakes, catfish, etc... do not impose an additional charge. I did not know this and wish I had - I would have ordered extra stuff.

This restaurant was nice, the atmosphere was very laid back and the menu had a really good veggie stir-fry. The waitress my table had was real nice and patient with us when we were ordering. The only thing is when my sister ordered the baby back ribs, she said she had to go check to see if they had any...LOL. When she returned they did indeed have them. When the food came everyone was happy with their dishes, the stir fry was good I was hoping it would have broccoli, like I requested and NO not one piece. My sister said the baby back ribs were good and enjoyed the rest of her dish as well. i would definitely go here again, it's close to my house and I like to support small businesses. Try them the food is good!

I heard great things about this place and was excited to hear about a new-to-me place in Detroit. As we walked to the door I noticed two manikins that seemed out of place (used as decor in one of the windows). I walk in and the host's table/cafe & Juice bar have a cheep sign overhead. There are potted plants in another window and long the walls as you walk in; two of four were knocked over. An extension cord ran under one table. When the server set two women there she had to untangle the cord from one of the chairs, but she didn't remove the cord from under the table. As we set, I look to the right and the window A/C unit near the ceiling was wrapped in plastic and tape. There were pictures on the wall, but there was no rhyme or reason for them. There was no continuity in the decor at all. The staff was just okay... not rude, but not warm and trained in the ways of customer service. We had the lamb and the chicken Alfredo. The lamb was just okay. The sides (vegetables and smashed potatoes were great). The chicken & pasta was 1 part chicken, 2 parts pasta, and 4 parts sauce. It didn't look good and with all that sauce, it didn't taste good. I took two bites to give it a try, but that is all I could do. The waiter didn't return shortly after serving us to make sure we were happy with our order so I had to call them over. I placed a new order for the blackened fish. It was pretty good. Neither the waiter nor the manager apologized for the atrocity that came out of the kitchen. Needless to say, it wasn't the worst experience, but nothing about the place makes me think I should spend time or money to return. Décor: 2 out of 5 Food: 2.7 out of 5 Service: 2.2 out of 5

Let's start by saying that the food was very, very good. That's the most important thing, right? We went on a saturday night and got a table right away. The space is cozy with big front windows and large paintings on the walls. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the general classy but comfortable feeling they have created. I can't help but think the space would be even better without the drab carpet though. Nice selection of smoothies and drinks. We opted for wine. Skip the house wine! It was terrible and tasted more like cranberry juice. It may have been a large glass and only $4 but definitely not worth it. We tried to order the Cabernet but they were out. The steak bites had great flavor...thanks for the recommendation Amanda H. We forgot to order the bread and missed out on finishing off the sauce. Next time! Between our party we tried the salmon in all three varieties: baked, grilled and blackened. All delicious. Our favorite was the grilled! But the real show stoppers are the sides. The spinach and smashed red potatoes were delicious! Perfect, actually. They were out of the green bean medley, which I would have liked to try. Even though the restaurant has been around for a year now, it seemed like they were still getting the kinks worked out. While our server was perfectly sweet and professional, everything took just too long. Not just the food, but too long to be greeted, to get water, to get the app, to order, to get the wine. The only thing quick was the delivery of the bill! The plates were barely cleared and it was dropped off. It wasn't that busy and I can understand time to get the main course out but not greeting and drinks... The biggest problem was the main courses were not brought out together. First 2, then 1 more, and then the last at least 5 minutes later. Way too long. But the food made up for this poor service. I hope they can get the flow worked out. I'll be back to check out brunch.

Great neighborhood spot. Tasty food with many options including comfort food, lighter fare, and veggie options. Very fresh fruit juice offerings as well. Reasonable priced and friendly service. Funky, eclectic interior.

Wait, to be seated. Gets busy. The service needs some help but over all this is a good spot. The service isn't as fast as I'd like but fair. The space is tight, I always feel like I'm squeezing into the place but it gives an intimate feel during performances. I was not hungry upon arrival but I always have room for something sweet. I had their sweet potato pie. Nice, smooth and silky. The flavor was balanced, not too much sugar or potato someone knew what they were doing with this pie. The spice was weaved into pie and not overwhelming. After the pie I noticed my guests cat fish nuggets and tasted one. It melted in my mouth so I ordered my own instead of smashing all of hers. They were crispy on the outside, golden and tender on the inside. I dipped them in the Franks but it wasn't necessary. The seasoning was nice. I did not finish them and took them home. I was shocked they were not "fishy" or rubbery when I reheated them. Still perfectly crispy and tender. They were a pretty good munch meal.

I love to support BOB, however it is very difficult when poor customer service is a factor. The food is very good at this establishment, but it always comes out in pieces. I want all of my food to come out together. They bring my eggs & bacon & then bring my grits & toast out 10 mins later, well guess what? Eggs are cold now!!!!... I have been there 2x within the past month, both times they comped my meal.... I have money, I can pay for my own food, just make sure it is right!!!!!!

Solidly average. The catfish filets were perfect prices but under seasoned. They surrounded a heap if mashed red skinned potatoes that were cold. My green bean medley was soggy like it sat in water or was frozen and reheated. I was confused by the fried breadsticks which seem to be fried. We came for the music. The band was excellent. Unfortunately, the music made it impossible to hear anything else or anyone.

Horrible Service!!! Horrible Food! Paid $11 for "lump crab cakes" with no limp crab meat. They used cheap imitation meat and charged me extra for the remoulade sauce, they called it zip sauce but clearly anyone who has gone to a decent steak house would know that zip sauce is NOT bright orange. Terrible! The waiter did not write down my order and there was 40 min between my order and actually receiving food. No updates, no bread, just waiters hanging out ignoring customers. Drive the extra 15 minutes and go find a decent meal.

I really want this place to be good because it's one of the more upscale eateries in the city. I don't come here too often but it seems to have gone down in quality. We waited a really long time for our orders and they weren't worth it. My smashed potatoes were cold and the spinach and catfish were basic. The presentation and blandness reminded me of cafeteria food. I put mikes hot on everything to make it taste better. It's very expensive for what you get. Just no creative spin, like yes this is technically what I ordered but I wanted it a better version. I remember coming here a few years ago and it was great. The type of place you order wine at the start and coffee at the end. I guess that's just not their thing now. I wouldn't say don't eat here, just don't expect fine dining.

The band was great.. the server was also- young guy-very friendly and helpful. However, the food took quite a while to come out, had we not been enjoying the much- probably would've complained. I read other reviews that say this place was upscale- definitely wouldn't say upscale- not a dump or anything-just not upscale. Diverse group of people eating here. Our food was pretty tasty. I had Caribbean Shrimp- shrimp were great (kinda SALTY), potatoes cold, veggies very much over cooked. For $17- it was ok- just not really filling, I had 7 small shrimp.. Overall0 its a cool place in the city- I DO recommend. Just don't go starving,. :) Oh- and there's not much parking besides on the street and with all the new things opening- that's also limited.

Chef Don, the best- the service, the best - the food the best! - I highly recommend the pumpkin cheesecake, the blackened chicken and the catfish.

We just kind of wound up here due to the limited option in the area late in the afternoon on a Saturday. We wanted a quick bite on our way to another engagement, this is definitely not the place for that. We were seated quickly, the place has a cozy, contemporary upscale vibe, and the server was friendly. We ordered water and two appetizers, chicken wings and catfish nuggets. Each appetizer was about $10 - way over-priced, but we just accepted that. About 35 minutes later, when a table that came in much after us got their food, we hailed our waitress and asked when the food would be out, she explained that they were changing the grease in the frier and that's what was taking so long. Fine, except it would have been nice if she offered that info up first. We waited another 10 or 15 minutes and out food finally arrived- our quick bite now a 45 minute excursion that was mostly waiting. We were starving. The food was a tad cold. We accepted and ate. The catfish was good, it had a great light crumbly batter and the fish was fresh and tender. The wings were full wings, tossed in a great take on red hot, doctored up by the house, but they were a bit cold and it was like $9 for 6 wings. At this point, the place began to fill up and I watched other tables wait for their food, meals came out irregularly for larger groups, and listened to other servers explain to different tables whatever excuse they had. They did offer us a free desert for having to wait so long. It was a kind gesture and all along our server was very sweet. If not for these things this would be a one star review. Neat place, good effort, but I would never go back.

From time to time, service is so atrocious that it's hilarious. I recently stopped by here with a friend on a Sunday for brunch, and I was looking forward to the place. The reviews here seem fairly good, and from the exterior it looks nice. The wait was a bit long, even though there were several open tables about, and it took us about 15 minutes to be seated. When we finally were able to order, I wanted to get the breakfast buffet. My friend that I was with was told that she'd have to get it as well, even though she wanted an omelette. When we asked why, we were told that it was because customers routinely were sending one person up to get the buffet food, and then sharing it with the rest of the table. As it's all you can eat, this, understandably, ends up costing the proprietor money. While I understand the reasoning, I was shocked. We were, in effect, being told that we'd have to synchronize our orders relative to the buffet, because we couldn't be trusted. This was the first of several incidents, all regarding service, and it was downhill from there. I wouldn't go back if you paid me.

A new small "bistro" that is doing it really big in Detroit proper. Clean open atmosphere. Friendly help. Free wifi. Juice bar. Also an art gallery. Menu contains lunch and dinner options. Too bad that their wifi and my iPad didn't play nice together. Also, you see a lot of Detroit big names, such as City Council President, Charles Pugh. Everything I've had to date has been excellent.

I could sum up 1917 in one word: solid. It's not amazing, but I'm pretty confident that you'd be hard pressed to be leaving unsatisfied. The decor is a little hit or miss. Funky, but not terrible. Food is good, fresh, and tastes homemade. Their menu reminds me of Fishbones', (steaks, chops, ribs, fried/grilled/blackened chicken or catfish, shrimp, no sushi) except their prices aren't horrendous and this place isn't full of douchebags hitting up Greektown Casino before they head to the hockey game. I had the blackened chicken with garden herbed rice and sauteed spinach. Was moist and very flavorful. Amalia had the fried catfish and it had a really nice cornmeal crust. They were playing John Coltrane records the whole time we were there too, which is great. Oh, and Dave Bing came in and sat next to us. If it's good enough for royalty...

Pretty good food and love the roof top atmosphere in the summer. Took a while to get our food and my dish never made it out until everyone else had finished, maybe that's why I loved it so much! Anyway I had an appetizer first so I wasn't that angry, so I guess that plus the cocktail made me relax. All in all at the end of the night I left the place happy.

We went here for a Two Hungry Dudes/Real Detroit food shoot. The best dish there was the blackend catfish followed by the Chocolate Obsession Cake. Everything they served to us here was pretty good though. The chef/owner came out to talk to us during our meal. He was laid off from his job a year or so ago. He was in the auto-industry. He's always wanted to open a restaurant and that was the final push he needed. He opened the restaurant with his brother and it's one of the only rooftop dining places in the area.

I'm so torn. I really want to LOVE this place and gush about it and tell everybody I know. I guess because I've heard such good things about it -- and well, my mother brought me a piece of their rum cake which changed my life. So I finally went. The interior leaves much to be desired. It put me in the mind of someone trying to run a restaurant out of their basement...at the last minute. Like they skipped putting any thought into the way it looked and said "hey, let's throw some chairs together-- doesn't matter if they match or not, so we can open our doors tomorrow!" It's small, yet not overcrowded. Everybody has their space, nobody's sitting on top of each other. There's apparently a second floor, which I've heard was nothing to write home about. It's a creaky, wooden floor and no other frills up there. Again, this is what I've been told... I've never been up there. Anyway, the night we went, it was rather crowded. Apparently, it's usually crowded. Hey, that's great that a local business is getting play like that. We were initially seated by the bathroom. The waitress informed us of this, which I thought was a nice heads up. We went for it -- but when another table opened up, we asked to move and she had no problem with that. When I did sit in the chair at our original table, it wobbled from one side to the next. I was terrified that I was going to hit the floor and lose tons of cool points. It was a weak, wobbly chair, so I'm really glad we moved. I don't know if I would have been able to finish my whole meal in that chair. Sidenote: There's only 1 bathroom. Well, one on the main floor and one upstairs. and by one, I mean 1. There are no stalls, just one room with a toilet and sink and whatever else. Eh. Once moved to our new seat -- which was a long, cushioned bench that went along one wall of the restaurant with tables placed in front of it. Long bench seating is ncie. But the cushion looked super dirty. There is art lining the walls -- art that's available for purchase, apparently -- there's a tv, there's a corner that's used for their open mic nights or whatever entertainment might be provided. There's a juice bar if you're into that kinda thing. Okay, let me get to what really makes this place stand out: Their menu is nice. Well, not the physical menu -- it's a piece of paper. But the items ON the menu are more fine dining than the establishment appears. The food is GOOD. The portions are a nice size and the appearance and presentation are on point. I had the chicken alfredo (with shrimp, too!) and it was OMG good. My mom had the blackened catfish with rice, bean medley (green & wax) and carrots AND a side of squash & zucchini. She throroughly enjoyed her meal, as it's what she's had there before. Despite my taking notes on the back of a receipt, I feel like this review is all over the place, so let me hit some bullet points: Their wine selection is basic. Grocery store basic. The glasses were clean! The silverware was decent -- just needed a quick wipe and they were fine. The staff was cohesive, friendly and accomodating! The chef came out and checked on us, made his rounds around the dining room. The rum cake is TO DIE FOR. The food is really delish. Bravo. Big, HOT portions. They have spoken word on Wednesday nights. We didn't wait long to be seated. More parking is needed... the lot is tiny and other than that, you're on the street at a meter. The overhead music is really good. Actually, it wasn't piped in, it was a stereo hooked up to some large speakers (maybe put that in the makeover budget??), but the music selection was nice to groove to while eating. I'd go back for carry out.... and more rum cake. :-0

Great rooftop deck. Good food. We had the grilled chicken (not my first choice, see below) with smashed potatoes and green beans and the fried shrimp with the same two sides (oops). Also had a couple Manhattans and Crown on the rocks. Generous-sized drinks. Soooo-- those were the good parts. The bad parts were that they were out of ribs and NY strips. Of course we chose those items first and then were told they were out. Given the size of the menu (small), that's pretty unacceptable. And it was on 6:45 on a Friday-- why were they out of what must be two popular items at the beginning of the weekend? Weird. The service was pretty awful, though our waitress was very sweet. The restaurant was very busy, but too bad-- they need to hire more (and better) staff then. It's such a fixable problem when you have a solid menu and the food is good. Waitstaff need to check back more often then every half hour and they need to tell you what's not available right away. Bottom line: food was good, but I doubt we will ever go back, which is a bummer.

O.M.G. This place was an incredible find. I headed into Detroit to take my grandmother out to dinner. Was trying to find someplace that was going to be good food, reasonably price, and healthy at the same time (she has diabetes and has to watch her carbs). Neither of us was even remotely disappointed. I found out about the place because they'd recently gotten a wonderful write-up in the Metro Times paper. I talked to my mother and she said she'd just heard great things about the place too. Let me tell you: whatever great things you hear are an understatement. The food was extremely reasonable (8-12 for an entree), clean and healthy and above all DELICIOUS. If I'd had room in my tummy I would have ordered everything. But all that means is that I have an excuse to come back. Even though I live in Ann Arbor (about 45 minutes away), I'll be back for dinner -- as often as possible. The cherry on top is that the folks who own and run it are all sweet as pie. The owner (David) is, well, gorgeous, but that doesn't count. (ok, it does!) He's also a kind, sweet, knowledgable chef who loves what he does and believes in doing it well. The wait staff and cooks (it's a faily place) are all invested in the restaurant doing well and it shows. Don't miss out! You won't be disappointed!

I will NEVER come back here. Not even horrible service, but NO SERVICE. My boyfriend and I were the ONLY people in the restaurant. We waited 17 minutes. Only reason we stayed was because he found their wifi and we started watching game highlights. Left right as someone was coming through the door.

Okay..... Real Talk.... Detroit's best kept secret... well not anymore.... I love all the food But I need ONE more crab cake instead of two...... also i must say the location is easy in and easy out for those folks that like to be able to get in and eat and get out with out all the trouble of turning here and there to get to where they want to go...... So Good Food Good location Good Good Music and GOOD OWNERS ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Outstanding fried chicken sandwich (in the vein of Chick-fil-A ), good mashed potatoes and green bean medley. Smoothie bar. The chicken sandwich was really good. Deep fried chicken breast on a hot buttered bun with whatever you ask them to put on it. Their smashed garlic potatoes were excellent, and their green bean medley had a nice acidic under-bite to it, maybe a vinegar on there... it was subtle and hard to tell for sure, but definitely detectable. Service was attentive, the view looking out the front window on a hot sunny day was ideal for people watching, and the ambience inside was pleasant. The owner was making rounds and chatting up the customers though she skipped my table :( but still lent a friendly air to the background chatter. Only thing to hum and haw at was the smoothie which tasted just fine, definitely cold and refreshing when i needed it, but more like a ton of ice with some fruit juices poured in... i mean, i guess that is one of several styles of smoothie, just not my cup of tea. I'd get the raspberry lemonade next time, which i saw someone else drinking and it looked superb.

The food was GREAT! I had the blackened catfish with rice and a zucchini & squash veggie dish. We arrived during happy hour and had the $5 long island. Whoa. It was good, strong, and there was lots of it! For dessert, I had the cheesecake and, like everything else, it was awesome. Our waiter and the bartender were both very nice and the service was good. The prices were very reasonable. The art on the walls was beautiful. Our waiter showed us the rooftop area and it was very nice. My friend was visiting from out of town and she had a blast. I will definitely be back with all of my friends. :)

I just discovered 1917 last month and I've already been back twice. The food is delicious, the portions are huge, and the prices are very reasonable. It's kind of a small restaurant, and both times it felt a little understaffed. The service lagged a bit. But that's really the only complaint I have for 1917. One of the nights I went was a Friday and they were packed. There was a live jazz ensemble performing and it was quite nice. And of course, the blackened chicken with smashed potatoes did not dissapoint!

A definite hidden gem on Livernois. I was there for a 3rd party wine tasting and hadn't even heard of the place before. First impressions: very friendly, professional staff! They are very attentive and amiable. The decor is very boutique trendy. Upscale without feeling pretentious. Bonus - rooftop outside deck! Now the food. I had the fried catfish, smashed potatoes, sauteed asparagus. Superb! The catfish filets were huge, light, flaky, and perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were smooth, and creamy, and tasty. The veggies were crisp and flavorful. Most dishes around $11 - 12. The owner came up (the wine tasting was in the upstairs section) and talked about his vision for not only his bistro but also for Detroit. He was very gracious and thank us for coming. You just don't see that kind of work ethic and humbleness anymore. I'm sold! A definite must for anyone!

The only reason this place got any stars because the food is delicious. However, the service is horrible. We initially went for the poetry night on the upper level but it was a little crowded and they ran out of chairs. We arrived about 9:00. It seemed like there would be more chairs and tables but insted they only had a few tables on one side, and a raggedy dirty couch on the other side! So, we decided to just go downstairs to eat. When the waitress came over she just stood and looked at us. I had to ask for menus!!! When she did bring the menus over... the were greasy and had food stains on them!! She didn't tell us about any drink specials, she barley seemed like she wanted to be there. The only way I even knew this place served liquor is because I check out the website before hand!!! I had to ask her for straws and napkins, our food took a long time and when I asked for ketchup and mustard bottles.... she brought back bottles that were almost empty!!!! The waitress didn't check on us at all through our entire meal... we didn't get refills on our water... and and the mean time we see the waitress sitting down at a table talking to other waitress and some guys!!!! When we finished we sat a while and my husband had to flag the waitress down to tell her to bring the bill!!!! After that she never came back!!! After waiting for so long we just left our bill money on the table and left!!! SHE DEFINITELY DID NOT GET A TIP!! I WILL NEVER COME HERE AGAIN!!!! I try to support black businesses..... and this is what I get it seems ever time!!!! We need to step it up people!!!! I shouldn't have to go to the burbs to get excellent service!!!!! SMH!!!!!

Good food! At least what I have tried. Whenever I have taken friends there, they always love it, too. Whoever put the menu together knew what they were doing. I don't know why I don't visit more often. I have only been here in the middle of the day (12-3pm) on weekdays, so I can't comment on service at other times of day or weekends. I saw complaints about the decor, but the inside decor is something I actually kind of like because the artwork is nice, and I like the "little old ladies" in the window (and it tricks me every time I ride by, making me think there are actual people sitting in the window). I think this place has a certain down to earth, relaxed charm to it. I always like the music, and the atmosphere is nice. They do need new carpet, though...yeah, hopefully they'll get that looked at really soon (if they haven't, and to be fair the last time I visited was in July 2013). They've only been open for a handful of years and it is great, so I'm sure that as time goes by, they'll be even better. I hope they stay in Detroit and more importantly in this location, we need more restaurants like this (outside of the Downtown area).

Tastes like mother's cooking. This is a bad thing. Mother consistently serves up bland, uninspired cuisine that ends up triggering a fight where things are said that can never be taken back, like how I'm a disappointment to my family. But unlike mother's kitchen, this place comes with a hefty price tag, but without any of the guilt and passive aggressive quips that she's been dishing out since 1985. I spent $9 for four spring rolls that were "meh" at best. And my entree, the grilled shrimp with a frozen vegetable medley, was $15. On the plus side, the staff was very friendly, and the bartender even offered up several recommendations on where to venture off to next in the neighborhood. One option was Player's Strip Club. I told her that was unnecessary since my genitalia no longer functioned, and my friends ushered me out before I could segue into the details of that fateful night which include a lost bet and a vegetable blender. Despite my lack of interest in ever eating here ever again, I would certainly come back to see a musician perform, sip a drink and to finish my story.

Dropped in at about 630pm on Friday, as I'd been on the road all day with my son and didn't fancy cooking myself! My son wanted to sit upstairs outside and the wait staff were most accommodating. We had the Chicken stir fry which was rich without being bloating (I think they use butter in the place of vegetable oil which gives it a rich creaminess); the chicken portion was generous and flame grilled well, offering a nice blend of succulent meat and barbeque char. The adult portion was generous enough to feed both myself and my son (who is four) adequately. We had a side of fries which were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, although a little on the greasy side (which I'm fine with, but I could well imagine my wife rejecting them because of this). We finished up with the chocolate obsession which was outstanding. I thought it could do with a little less cherry essence in the sauce, but my wife thought the take-out one we got her was perfect...go figure. The service was a little on the laissez faire side, however for my specific situation (child with the attention span of a gnat), that worked quite well, especially as the fries and the main course were served about 15mins apart (fries came afterwards). I can see this being an issue if you were wanting a romantic dinner or eating as a large group. The upstairs terrace is nice, however the wooden flooring could use tacking down a little better. Whenever anyone moved around, you could feel it (so apologies to the other diners that were up on the roof with us when my son decided it was time for a little improv dance number). On that note (no pun intended), it would have been nicer had the volume on the music been one or two notches lower (that being said I'm probably not hip any more...)
