The first thing I ask when ordering sushi is always whether the spicy tuna roll is whole tuna or minced and pre-mixed with spicy sauce. I have no idea why anybody would want sushi minced up, but this is one of those places that minces. As expected, it was blah. My follow-up question is whether they can make a spicy white tuna roll, since that is unlikely to be minced. This place doesn't offer white tuna, either. The rest of the spicy rolls and veggie rolls we've ordered have all been excellent! The AAC gets rave reviews around here. We weren't so impressed with one of the "very veggie" rolls that inexplicably included a deep-fried vegetable that made it unexpectedly not gluten-free. We've ordered carry-out sushi a handful of times from here and it's legit. Miyako at Great Lakes Crossing and Makimoto on University are better. That's where I picked up my sushi habit and they both have much better tuna rolls. Considering tuna is such a staple in sushi, it's surprising more places don't get it right.

As my nine-year old daughter whispered to me while watching our chef fumble around a bit, "I think he's new." So it is with this place. As they get things figured out, it will get better. As it stands, in order of service: Soup is delicious; salad is dredged in so much ginger dressing it becomes soup; fried rice lacks the little bit of crunch you get when it's taken off at just the right moment; vegetables were okay; two pieces of complimentary shrimp were perfect; steak and chicken were a bit tough; and the noodles that came at the end didn't really fit. I'll try it again some time--I can only guess it will get better.

After venturing to the Flint location a month ago I saw that this location had popped up (A lot closer to my house) and I decided to take my husband here, he had never been. The new location is fantastic-spacious, clean, not chaotic at all. The staff was friendly and most professional. We had a great time and the awesome food-I had so much left over, I had it for dinner the next day. Most definitely will be back!

I feel like they are giving away food at lunch time! The specials during the week, you just cannot beat! For $8 you get everything you get during the dinner hours. I am not a huge fan of the salad dressing as it taste very peanut butter like and I like more of a sesame garlic. Everything else is amazing. Also, a great show for the first time around or the kiddos. I just love the food.

Food is ok...service sucks...and never do take out. Amazingly slow. A bit on the expensive side for what it is. Hibachi chefs nearly killed a guy at my table. Keep your eyes open during the show.

We were excited to try it, something new in Clarkston. I ordered sushi which was only OK. Too much sauce on the roll I ordered. My family ordered surf and turf hibachi which they said the steak was dry, lobster wasn't good, and noodles didn't seem to fit in with it. I will say the soup and salad was good-- though the salad had too much dressing. The service was pretty bad-- waitress never asked if we wanted more drinks or asked if we wanted dessert. Also, our table was piling up with our dirty plates which we were sure would be cleared soon... but we eventually had to ask for them to be cleared, to which we got a bit of an attitude. Also strange about this place is the ambiance-- there's no music, so it was oddly quiet. The walls are white and the lighting is bright even during a late dinner... seems it should have a darker feel.

Glad to see Clarkston get another restaurant and my wife and I love sushi. The hibachi area is very nice and the food is great. There sushi side could use some help though. The lighting is too much and you feel like your in a super market and the music is faint and more like elevator music. The sushi area needs to be more trendy in my opinion. The sushi is pretty good and I had one roll that was the best roll I've ever had, but my issue is all there tuna rolls are grounded tuna which is cheap. They need to use sliced tuna. If they can dial in the atmosphere in the sushi area that would be great. The owner is always there and is very nice. Service is always very good also, so 2 thumbs up for service.

My fiance and I went to the Saganos in Clarkston this past Saturday. We walked in and there was a line, so we headed to the bar. We sat down and the bartender didn't say hello, didn't acknowledge us, nothing. He served another person, and then went to the window and started yelling at the wait staff to get their drinks out of the window. Then they started piling up, yelling back at him for drinks, or that they didn't know who was leaving their drinks on the window. Then he came back to us. "what can I get you?"...with the enthusiam of someone on death row. It felt like were were torturing him with our presence. We ordered a Bud Light and a Chocolate Covered Strawberry drink. He shook his head once we ordered, and made our drinks and returned. Then he walked around the bar more (at this point two more people came). After a couple minutes (and looking over the sushi menu and waiting for him after setting it down), the hostess came over to us and asked us why were were sitting at the bar if we were going to order sushi we needed to go to the sushi bar, it would be easier for us. We told her we were okay staying at the bar if that was okay, she started laughing and said "I'll come back". Then I got the attention of the bartender by saying "can we order some sushi?" ...we ordered one roll, and he didn't say "yes", when I asked. He just looked at me. THE ONE MAJOR POSITIVE; he put in our order, brought it to us quickly and everything (including the drinks) were delicious. He gave us our bill, didn't say thank you, didn't say have a nice day...I honestly did not hear his voice once he came up at asked us the first time if we wanted a drink- or except when he was having personal conversations with the waitresses. When we left, the hostesses also said nothing to us, and there was literally not one person at the hostess stand - so they weren't too busy to thank us for coming in. I have been going to Saganos in Clarkston and prior to them opening, for years at the Flint location. I have never had such a disheartening experience. If that had been my first time there, I would NEVER go back. Disappointing.

Absolutely love this place! Best Japanese steak house around. The food is exceptional, the staff is amazing and the rooms are comfortable and very welcoming. With certain chefs one can tell that there has been a slight learning curve, as this place is still young, but anything the newer chefs lack in showmanship, they MORE than make up for in personality, food quality and attitude. Furthermore, the Sushi is phenomenal... something I've been searching for, for a couple years since the owners of Tokyo Seoul BBQ in Shelby Township (the best sushi I have ever had in the US) decided to sell and retire. I will never go to another place in this category again, as long as Sagano is an option!

Great dinner experience! Fun chefs, melt in your mouth nigiri, and great hibachi grill! No regrets trying this new restaurant. Everyone was super friendly. I would go back in a heartbeat! Web site isn't live yet, but check out saganoflint.net from their Flint location.

Pretty decent Japanese steak place. Food is good and the portions are very generous. We even get carry out, which they do a very nice job of putting together to you. Staff is very nice, and try's hard to get some of our dietary requirements perfect.

I've been here 4 more times since my previous review. I've taken my previous review down a star. 3 things: 1) Greeters/ seaters not very friendly 2) visible cleaning tray and supplies at end of sushi bar- patrons don't want to see your cleaning supplies 3) the floor is so dirty! I know part of the fun is chefs trying to throw food in peoples' mouths and that there's a lot of misses, but do a quick sweep of the floor between settings so we don't have to see all the trash from the last group!!!

The food here is not bad but it is nothing special. The service is about average. If I had to pick between Japanese steakhouses in the area, Miyakos definitely gets my vote over Saganos. I think in chain restaurant businesses, companies lose some of their uniqueness that makes them memorable.

Read all review- update on bottom******** Meh. It was good. Wasn't as good as Miyako's but close. Their portions are big so you won't leave hungry. The Chef I will say was fantastic, very fun!!! The sushi was yucky. I'll stick with Sushiland for that. Will I come back? Yes, it's closer to home than Miyako's and there was no wait. Ok I had to update my review- I went back last night 10/9/14 so I really wanted to compare between here and Miyako's since both are close to me. I did prefer the soup at Sagano's, it has these crunchy yummies in it. I also liked the salad here better. The dressing is fantastic and you get a tomato slice. We had a new chef and he actually did a trick I hadn't seen before and the food was better than the first time. Last time the chef forgot the noodles until after the meat so no one really ate them. Kids loved their meal and they had fun. Still didn't try the Sushi again but I did order the coconut shrimp appetizer and it was good. So- I bumped up the star to 4 since we have decided to stick with Sagano's and say goodbye to Miyako's.

I wish I could give negative stars. My young boys wanted Japanese Steakhouse. We got dressed up to go. Arrived at 6:15pm and were told 30-35 min wait. After an hour and 20 minutes we finally left. The boys are exhausted and starving. We are at Culvers. And now it's past bedtime. Thanks for ruining what should have been a really special night out with my boys, Sagano.

Very over priced. Chicken is usually over cooked. I enjoyed the food more when they first opened. We try to get take out now but noticed that the quality of the food goes down when you order take out. The veggies are mostly.carrots and not enough. Broccoli. When ever we ask for extra broccoli for the kids they basicly take the broccoli from the whole group.and just give it to the kids. Then charge us more.

Went to Sagano's last night with my family for my birthday dinner and I was completely satisfied with my experience. This is the third time I've eaten at this restaurant and the food was once again excellent. I ordered the Hibachi steak and chicken combo and was very pleased with the meal. The soup was great and the salad was topped with a delicious dressing. The noodles were my favorite part of my dish and went well with the fried rice, Hibachi grilled vegetables, steak and chicken. Plus dinner entrees come with two (additional) grilled shrimp which were also very delicious. I see in a lot of the other reviews that people felt the noodles didn't fit with the meal. I've never been to a Hibachi grill that doesn't provide noodles as part of the meal, and Sagano's recipe is quite good. Personally, I like to wait for all the elements (noodles, fried rice, veggies, & meat) to be done before eating. Then I add a little yum yum sauce and ginger sauce. I really enjoy how the different flavors work together. The chef was very entertaining and the wait staff's service was on point. I've eaten at several Hibachi style restaurants in the past, and Sagano's food and service is a step above your average Japanese bistro.

Love this place, great hibachi, and sushi. I think sagano blows miyako out of the water on every level, the sushi here is way better, not sticky like it often is at miyako. My kids love coming here as well, they always have a great time. The chefs are entertaining and we always go home with plenty of leftovers for another entire meal. We used to go to the one in flint but we recently moved down here, and our first restaurant stop was here and we couldn't believe how much better everything was at the clarkston location, which we loved it before but now it's just unbelievable!! Keep up the good work sagano!!
