I ended up at the Narrows Tavern twice while staying in Waldoboro this past weekend for a wedding. What a great spot! It's super comfortable with solid, reasonably-priced food and a nice vibe. If you're in the area I would definitely recommend it for dinner and/or drinks. They also serve food LATE. The atmosphere is very charming and eclectic, with a rad 1800's Maine map that every other review mentions (it's very cool), two excellent paintings of the bar itself, a Jerry Garcia painting, beer signs like Anchor Steam (yay SF!), nautical stuff, etc. The lighting is a bit bright but makes it seem like more of welcoming tavern and less like your average bar that happens to serve food. Each time we went (around 7 p.m.) there were folks of all sorts - whole families with young kids seated at the large family tables, one table full of older ladies happily drinking wine and playing cribbage, and some crusty fisherman-looking dudes sitting at the bar. It felt really genuine and unpretentious. The food was surprisingly good. The first night we tried their haddock chowder, which was very creamy, with large chunks of haddock and potatoes and lots of dill. It definitely satisfied the fish chowdah craving. The next night my partner enjoyed the Rachel sandwich, which was like a healthier Reuben and came with fresh cut fries. I ordered a steak tip dinner with red wine. The tips were cooked a bit unevenly, some a little over, but were smothered with luscious pepper and onions. The broccoli side was almost raw (I like mine steamed a bit more), and even though the rice pilaf was clearly from a box, I will not deny that it was perfect to sop up the juicy steak and onion bits with. Beers are thoughtfully selected with local brews and East Coast craft beers like Magic Hat and Dogfish Head. We had Snakebites with local cider and Guiness, which were not only delicious but fun to drink. It's hard not to love libations with magical layers! They have a special mug program for regulars where you get 22 oz. for the price of a pint, so all the personalized mugs were hanging over the bar. I loved looking up and thinking about the local community that drinks here. They also have a small but decent wine list (honestly I was surprised they even HAVE a wine list - nice one, guys) and hard liquor. I live in San Francisco and am lucky to have a plethora of good food around me all the time. Unfortunately many places around the country just don't make much of an effort, so I really appreciate a restaurant in rural coastal Maine that really cares about serving quality & tasty food, some of which is sourced locally, and is conscious about carrying local beers. Honestly if I lived here I would probably be here all the time and have a mug at the bar!

I love this place!! The food is excellent!! For an appetizer we got the spinach and artichoke dip and it came with homemade pita chips (I think its pita) and it was excellent, but enough chips. My cousin got the broiled haddock dinner with the rice pilaf and asparagus which she loves and always gets every time. I got the stuffed baked haddock dinner with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. The fish was great, I've had better seafood stuffing and this one was crab, but still pretty good. The mashed potatoes were real and excellent (they don't have gravy through :-( ). I've had better coleslaw also. I'd try a different side next time. My sister got the chicken Alfredo with asparagus and she let me try it and we both think its the best Alfredo sauce we have ever had anywhere! Better than Olive Garden! Next time I come I'm getting that! There is limited seating so we had to stand and wait for 5 min or less. They were also out of a few items, but that's to be expected when a place has great food. I definitely plan on coming back.

What a nice little local tavern! As we walked in we didn't get the "who are these strangers" look from any of the locals seated at the bar. Instead the nice barmaid came over right away and handed us a menu and took our drink order. I always like to try local brewed beers when I travel so I asked her to get me a dark local beer. She returned with Gritty Black Fly Stout. It was a lot like Guinness and I was very happy. I drank that every time we popped in during our stay in Maine. The place was very homey and you could tell the locals enjoyed coming because there were many mugs hanging over the bar for regulars. Even though the tables were all like picnic tables and not the most comfy of seats it seemed right in this environment. I ordered the haddock chowder and it was tasty. I'm used to chowder being a bit thicker but this is the style back east. There was plenty of flavor and plenty of local fish. It was a bit cold temp wise. But I was hungry and it was late. My dining companion had the seafood alfredo - Fresh scallops and Maine shrimp sautéed with garlic and herbs, tossed in a creamy alfredo sauce and fettuccini, topped with fresh grated parmesan cheese. She really enjoyed it and the scallops and shrimp were plentiful. I will admit when we returned another night for just a beer before heading back to our B&B they had a jam session with local musicians. It was loud and off key and a big turn off. We drank our beers quickly and left. If I were a local and knew the entertainers it might have been tolerable. But after a long day of sightseeing and driving it was just too much for us middle aged women to endure.

Good pub food, we had huge nachos and juicy burgers, even my date's burger (well done) was still juicy. There was a local playing the guitar and singing the night we were there too, a bit awkward since it was getting late and only 2-3 others were there, we didn't really want the entertainment, but it wasn't bad

When I step into The Narrows Tavern I feel as if transported well away from normal mid-coast bars. The tavern has two floors. The main floor has the bar, kitchen, and tables. The room is of exposed brick with tasteful trim and lighting, and has some cool amaricana beer swag. There is a great 6 foot map of the state, an original from the mid 1800's. It is not uncommon for couples and small parties to sit with others in a public fashion at the picnic-style tables. Downstairs is a bit shabby, but is a bit of a game room with Foosball/darts etc. The beer and booze selection is good for a place this size. I didn't see a bottle of Galliano on hand for instance meaning this is not a martini bar. Good. What they do have is cheap PBR and a nice selection of micros. Mount Gay and soda/splash of tonic? Check. The menu at this joint is pretty solid. It's quite big for such a small place. I have only had offerings off their sandwich menu, but they seem to have regular specials and weekend offerings (prime rib on Fri and Sat for instance). If you like local fish, check out the Haddock Reuben. Fries are the real deal, fresh house-cut potatoes, not the junk from Sisco. My assessment of this food is that well, no, it won't blow you away. But its a good value for the price, and much better in quality and consistency than any local competition. Oh, and the kitchen is never closed. Or not before last call anyway. Which is a great feature for this area of Maine, I can tell you - you can roll in there late and still catch a bite. Also of note is the fact that The Narrows has live music much of the time. Very often its not even scheduled, local players in the community will come down for a pint and bring their instruments. Which gives the tavern a really nice community flair, the closest places I know of that roll like that are all the way up in Nova Scotia. I rate this place 4 stars, but it is a 5 if you only compared it to its competition. One of the coolest spots in Maine for sure.

Narrows Tavern is a nice little pub with a good local craft brew list and tasty pub fare. Almost everything, from the burgers to the seafood to the pasta, is very tasty. The service wasn't the fastest or friendliest when we went, but I would certainly go back if I was in the area again.

I was a little apprehensive when we first walked in... The guy at the bar in his pjs at 1 pm was a little off-putting, but to each his own. Excellent pub style food. Burger was juicy and cooked exactly how I asked- medium rare. The onion rings were a meal in themselves; massive rings of onion, but oh so yummy. We will definitely eat here again. Great little stop a little off the beaten path, but not too out off the way.

We stopped here after a weekend up north, and we're sure glad we did. Super friendly vibe with a very attentive waitstaff, tons of options on the menu with many that were veggie-friendly, and a great number of taps to boot. All this, and a super reasonable price! I'll have to start making the trip up from Portland to specifically come here, because it rocks! Highest recommendation.

This place is exactly what a small town tavern should be. The pub fare is tasty, and I have eaten here a lot. I can recommend the breaded mushrooms, the nachos, any burger, the fish and chips! The staff is personable and friendly, and put you at ease. Even when the place is hopping busy, they are attentive as they possibly can be. The drinks are well made, and they have a variety of beer and ale- with some selections on draught. I give this place five stars because of small town awesomeness.

Excellent pub-style food. We weren't expecting much from a small town tavern and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food here. Try the Cajun fried mushrooms or spinach dip with flour tortilla chips. The sweet potato fries are also delicious and portions are generous. Will return on our next visit

This is a tough one to grade... The food is excellent... Grade A+ pub style. But man... The gal running the place is an absolute dud. To be honest... She is downright rude. I get it... You are a local. My recommendation... Go with the "take out option"... Even if you eat in your car, you'll have a far better experience than dealing with miss attitude.

We were driving home from our vacation house, and were driving through Waldoboro. My dad had told us about a little tavern in the area. We ended up parking out in front and walked inside. The waitress/bartender was maintaining a happy disposition regardless of the low activity at the time. She was very welcoming and took our order quickly. The food came within 5-10 minutes of ordering. We all enjoyed our meal and were intrigued by the interesting pictures and maps on the wall. The atmosphere had a good vibe, and the location was hidden but in the town. I was happy with our experience.

This bar gets a lot of local and out-of-town visitors and has retained its local feeling. On the wall is a terrific old map and some oil paintings of the interior of the tavern itself! Very charming. The waitperson provided menus promptly and served us right away very matter of factly, delivering our beer, fries, nachos and coffee in quick order! One customer asked for iced tea with sweetener and was served some lemonade as the closest match as this is just not a tourist spot.

A really perfect spot, at least if you like having a laid-back meal in a pleasant atmosphere. The staff is genuinely friendly - I've struck up conversations with them in the past when it's been quiet in there, and they've all come across as people you'd very much like to be friends with. The food is terrific - and there's excellent vegetarian options. The atmosphere is warm and sweet - I've only been there in the summer, but it seems like it would be a real beacon in the winter. Every time I'm in Maine I drag my family there for at least one meal or two, and now we all have soft spots in our heart for the place. Also? Great name.
