OMG! Need I say more? Well, I will. I got the lemon bar. Pure Heaven! And their freshly ground coffee beans made the perfect dark roasted cup of coffee to go with it. The best thing I got in Portland!

Gluten free baked good usually taste like a terrible mix of chalk and sand with a dash of sugar. Fortunately bam bam knows how to do it right. My wife has a severe allergy to gluten and almost jumped out if the car when she saw the sign. We purchased about 10 different items to take back to dc with us. I was really amazed at how great everything was and how meticulous the kitchen is about gluten sensitivity. You don't have to be worried about gluten to really love this place!!!!

Love this place! The ambiance is great and so is the food! All of the food is gluten free so it's a great place for anyone who cannot eat gluten . Even people who can eat gluten will like it here , the food is that good! I had lemon lentil soup and a snickerdoodle cookie I thought they were delicious! I highly recommend this place!

Is there some way I can unhinge my jaw and consume everything at Bam Bam in one satisfying, cartoonish gulp? No? Damn. My boyfriend has Celiac's Disease, which makes dining out a challenge. Bam Bam allows him to eat yummy stuff without getting sick and allows me to eat gluten free baked goods without plugging my nose. [For the uninitiated: There was an Onion Article called "Gluten Free Pancake Mix is Just a Bag of Sand." So true] Bam Bam is reasonably priced, delicious and makes a good cup of coffee. Try the apple pie bar or their Whoopie pies. They make hella good quiche if you are looking for something savory. My friend got a custom cake her for his birthday. It was amazing, the frosting was creamy and rich (not that too sugary crap you usually get at grocery stores). TL;DR - Go here and eat stuff

This review is really just for the sandwich bread. Which was OK - not a revelation but not a tasteless piece of brick and cardboard that some GF breads boast. Other goodies looked terrific but I didn't get a chance to sample. I will absolutely go back!

Gosh, I wanted to love this place. The cute tables, the old books to browse, and the friendly baristas, and a recipe for a place I want to frequently. But, sadly, the tea just did not have any flavor. I ordered the apple tea latte - it just tasted like water. Of the four of us, the only drink that had any true flavor was the apple cider. The teas were just too watered down, and just really tasted like drinking some hot water. Blah.

I've been coming here for six months. My mom has a gluten sensitivity and my aunt has celiac disease. I love their cinnamon rolls, their parfaits and especially enjoy the cheesecakes (peanut butter and jelly is my favorite!). Some of the items can be too sweet but the pizza is amazing! Customer service highly depends on who's working but overall wonderful environment and experience.

My hubby and I stopped into this place for a sweet treat. I had a chocolate cupcake that was the most moist cake I have ever eaten. My husband had a fig bar that he said was really good as well. We are not gluten-free but we will be visiting this place again!

This place is a nice addition to Commercial St. The place has a nice, vibrant atmosphere which is also relaxed. Bam Bam is a great place to have a conversation with a group of friends or get some work done. The coffee selection was a little lackluster compared to other shops, but they had a great selection of different teas. But let's be real here; the real reason anyone comes to this place is for the fantastic sweet treats. I wasn't even hungry when I got here, but I knew I couldn't leave without at least trying something out. After starring at the all my different choices, I eventually asked the cashier what she recommended. After asking a few different questions, she served me one of the best cinnamon rolls I've had in my life. I noticed that they have a new type of bread they sell every day of the week. And based on the other Yelp reviews, it sounds like this place changes their menu very regularly. Many people also came in to place mass orders for weekend cookouts. The prices for all items seemed very fair, especially for the quality. I highly recommend this place, especially for the gluten-free population, as all the items here are gluten free.

This bakery is a godsend for the gluten intolerant. It's relatively easy enough to park, signage is good, plenty of seating. There are many beautiful choices of baked goods including bagged bread. The food is well protected by a sneeze shield, but it's still easy enough to communicate with staff. Prices are comparable to any other bakery in town, but in this case the products are gluten-free. Staff is responsive, attentive, and pleasant.

Yummy cookies, esp the peanut butter. You wouldn't even know they're gluten free. Delicious! They don't get the fifth star because they have weird and annoying policies like limiting the number of cookies you can buy at a time. Apparently so they don't run out. But seriously, bakeries are a first come kind of business and to want to give you my hard earned money for something I can see and almost taste but you won't sell on the off chance someone else might happen by is just bad business.

Awesome little place! Ordered a blueberry scone that was amazing (and huge)! Saving half for tomorrow morning. It was actually still warm. Everything is so fresh. And my chai latte was awesome. Staff were friendly. Cute place to read a book of meet with some friends of colleagues. Will definitely be back!

I visited Portland during a very cold and raining weekend and we went inside Bam Bam for shelter. The place is very cozy and homely, there are couches, plants, and books lying around. It was so nice inside we didn't want to leave. I had a oatmeal cookie, a coconut macaroon, and a chocolate mint cookie with a latte. They were all delicious, especially the coconut macaroon. It was also inexpensive and a great starbucks alternative with a very local authentic vibe. Much recommended!

Ok....excellent food especially bakery products. My daughter and I both need to eat gluten free and this is one of the few places that truly gets it. I would recommend it to anyone that needs to eat gluten free, dairy free etc. However, I am not from Maine and have been there three times and they are out of products by 11:30 in the morning. I asked if they could put some aside and was told no because an order requires 48 hours. It didn't matter that i was not going to be in the area in 48 hours. Not accommodating at all....just not good business to me. Totally worth it if you are able to get what you want when you get there. Very disappointing especially in a high tourist area.

The best apple pie! This is where I bring my guests from out of town. Lately, I've been stopping by in the afternoon to grab a coffee and unwind. The atmosphere is delightful!

Gluten-free food that is just plain good, not good "for gluten-free" or merely "not awful." It is really, really good. I'm excited to feature some of their treats at my wedding, and I just had some great lasagna. The atmosphere is laid-back and comfy. All the food is clearly labeled so you know what contains dairy, nuts, soy, and potential allergens. Good coffee, too!

I really wanted to like this place, but it was just okay. We took a couple of desserts to go, nothing spectacular. Too bad, maybe I picked the wrong items, chocolate caramel bar and a cookie with Indian spices.

I'm neither vegan nor on a gluten-free diet, but the pastries here were amazing. They also brew a strong, smooth coffee. Highly recommended!

I have only been to this bakery 1 time but I am so excited to have such wonderful bread that is Gluten Free! Coming from California on the Central coast, the salad bowl of America, with all of our healthy organic restaurants, vegan, gluten free etc.......if only they could taste what Bam Bam bakery has to offer. I said I wanted to open a Holy Donut in Santa Cruz, Ca I would love to see Bam Bam bakery as well. There is not a better tasting Gluten Free bread! Portland is lucky to have so many residence that appreciate the good stuff.

I went in to Bam Bam Bakery this morning to get some treats to send to some friends in Australia, as they are going gluten-free and I've always loved the tasty treats here! When I arrived I was assisted by the kindest lady, who went above and beyond to make sure I got what I wanted/needed! This place has not only DElicious gluten-free goodies, but also wonderful costumer service!!

I don't get the hype. The service people are surly and unfriendly and the food isn't that good. More importantly neither is the coffee.

  • David R.

Beware! I did not understand that this was a gluten-free bakery until after I had made my purchases. My wife spied a small, unobtrusive paper sign pasted on the front of the checkout counter (i.e. at crotch level) as we were exiting. There were customers blocking this sign both when I entered and when I ordered. I'm not saying that there wasn't another more obvious sign; I'm just saying that I didn't see one. And I am a pretty observant person. There's nothing wrong with a gluten-free bakery, but in my experience the wares are never as good as the real thing. Simply put, I would not have stopped in here if I had known, but I can see this working the other way too. How many gluten-free customers are missing out because they don't give the store a second glance? Bam Bam should do a better job of advertising their status for the benefit of gluten eaters and non-eaters alike. For what it's worth, I liked the ginger molasses cookie all right, but the whoopie pie was very disappointing.

This place is a healthy choice for a morning after visiting Portland's nightlife. It has delicious selections of baked goods, teas, and coffees while catering to the gluten-free, diabetic, and/or health conscious person who may or may not be in your group. Wait, am I one of those?

Hands down, the best baked goods and atmosphere in the area. Delicious and a fun place to spend time with friends when you want a casual treat while you are out and about. Good prices, too.

  • Lindsay S.

I love that this is a completely gluten free bakery but that it's also delicious enough for people who don't need to be gf. It's also great that there are some vegan options as well. There are two reasons why I won't give it 5 stars - many baked goods are too sugary and I'd prefer a different milk alternative other than soy. Do try the pizza and soup though! Different flavors on rotation and so far they're all yummy!

I have been to Bam Bam at least a dozen times in the past year. Their honey oatmeal bread is delicious! Compared to the frozen store-bought breads that are very expensive, you can get a very large loaf for under $7. Also, they use honey and not sugar in it. The chicken pot pie and veggie lasagna is also delicious. The BBQ chicken pizza is made with BBQ sauce and it's way too sweet. Their others pizzas are OK but nothing amazing. They offers soups which I tried once and it was good and came with a yummy gluten-free roll. Where they fall very short, CONSISTENTLY, is customer service. During the summer at lunchtime, which is peak tourist season in downtown Portland where they are located, they do not always have their hot food ready until well past 12:30 or later. Other times they only offer leftovers from the day before which they can reheat, although I recently had to ask them to heat a pizza slice twice to get it hot. More than once my friends and I had to go someplace else for lunch because of this. The staff is usually aloof, sometimes with hints of attitude. One time I asked if they could please refill the water pitcher. Fifteen minutes later it never happened and the woman behind the counter seemed annoyed. There is limited seating for self-service and it's not always cleaned regularly during busy times and not everyone buses their table when finished. Overall I think it's an excellent place to get delicious gluten-free food "to go" if you call in advance to make sure they have what you want.

I write love letters to Bam Bam's cookie dough bar in my diary every evening, so deep is my devotion to their treats. Just last night I penned this heartfelt passage: "My dearest Cookie Dough Bar, Your chocolatey embrace buoyed me through yet another grueling day today. I don't know what I would possibly do without you. My love for your silken supportiveness has grown to new heights over these last few months, I could scarcely have imagined it when I first sampled you at the one year anniversary. In fits of indecisiveness, I foolishly think that perhaps we should spend more time apart, allow one another to play the field so that we can be reunited, firmer in our conviction that we were truly meant to be together. But then I see you in the cooler case, with that seductive chocolate drizzle and I simply can't resist. You've ruined me for other baked goods, Cookie Dough Bar. I am a husk of the woman I once was without you in my belly."

We have tried to like this place but the wait staff is so unfriendly. The person behind the counter was so combative that we left without ordering. This may be our last visit.

I went there for lunch because they told me over the phone that they had a vegan tamale pie. As soon as I took a bite, it was clearly meat. When I took it back, the woman at the counter denied that it was meat, arguing that they don't use meat in their vegan dishes. Only after the owner came over would she acknowledge that it was a meat pot pie. I trust places that purport to sell vegan food to be a little careful. None of that here, and only a half hearted apology. I would have loved to like this place but wouldn't go back.

This place is bright and yet unassuming. I walked in, and my only negative was that they didn't seem as excited as I did when I saw ALL that they had to offer!! As if they... CAN EAT THIS STUFF.. WHENEVER!? Portland, Maine is otherwise a gluten-free friendly city, but BAM BAM (don't forget to shake your pom poms when you say the name) is a real gem. If only we Torontonians were so lucky! Coming from the Big Smoke, I was amazed to come into this huge, bright, open space right near the waterfront - a true haven for Glutards like myself. You come here to enjoy some fantastic, fresh, *safe* gluten-free baked goods that you palate has so desperately been seeking. You do not come here for the decor, as quaint as it may be. (Lots of wasted space.) I purchased, for less than $20 (UNHEARD OF back North in Toronto): - 1 GIANT loaf of Cinnamon Raisin bread (not too sweet) - 1 whoopie pie (REALLY SWEET) - 1 peanut butter cookie - 1 sugar cookie - 1 coffee - 1 bagel with butter All the pastries were fresh-baked that day. I am used to paying $7 for a frozen loaf of bread a mere 1/3 the size of the ones at BAM BAM. These people deserve an award for not gouging their customers but providing safe affordable products. Hats-off to you!

The staff can be hit or miss on friendly-ness and competence, but the food is consistently good here, so I keep coming back. I'm in the controversial category of gluten-sensitive, meaning I don't have a full allergy, but I do know I feel better when I don't eat wheat. The pizza takes a little getting used to. Don't go in expecting a real crust - it tastes like it's made with rice flour - it's not like the pizza you're used to. That said, it's tasty if you can get past the thin, chewy crust. The desserts are where it's at. The chocolate crinkle cookies, chocolate chip cookies and brownies top the list of my favorites. The whoopie pies are also great. Skip the coffee - it's not the best in town IMHO. Try Arabica, Bard, Others, Tandem, CBD or Speckled Ax for great coffee in Portland. No need to go to Starbucks. This place is like Mecca for those with real issues with gluten, and it's a nice alternative for people like me.

I wish I lived in Portland just so I could visit this bakery weekly. I travel extensively and this was a great bakery. Food 5 stars, Clean, friendly staff, nice relaxing place to sit awhile and enjoy delicious and well portioned carrot cake or pies with coffee. Only minus was coffee a bit strong but good. Love it!

I'd been getting their vegan, gluten-free ginger cookies at Local Sprouts for ages but somehow never actually went into the real location until this week. The entire bakery is gluten-free and they're good about other allergens. What this means in practical terms is that there's vegan stuff, there's dairy-free stuff, there's soy-free stuff, there's stuff that's vegan and soy-free, there's lots of options. If you have questions, they will pull out a book of ingredients and answer them. They have all kinds of sweet treats, some savory treats, and loaves of fresh bread, with a schedule posted for what kinds of bread they have on what days of the week. There are teas and cider and other beverages. The tea is Republic of Tea brand. The space is pleasant, with good natural light and a nice display for the baked goods. Yay!

Best priced coffee in town! I haven't eaten there yet, so I can't give them 5 stars yet. ;) After spending $3.50 for a very small iced regular old coffee at Tandem yesterday, I just had to sing the praises of fairly priced coffee. Here, here Bam Bam!

This place is indeed as good as baked goods (let alone Gluten Free baked goods) get. The service at the bakery is outstanding! I live in NYC and have family in the Portland area and I never, except on a few occasions, skip coming in and stocking up on their delicious Gluten Free bars, especially the cookie dough one. My partner is gluten intolerant, so we came up to check it out. I being capable of eating full glutenous deliciousness find this place to be better than most gluten-ful places. Truly a must try. (and it's cheap! compared to NYC prices, at least)

When Bam Bam Bakery first opened, I had a horrible experience there. This was in 2011. The staff was rude and all over the place, the baked goods were dry like sand and flavorless, and the atmosphere didn't seem all that welcoming. With such a bad first impression I saw no reason in ever going back. Until recently... and now I can't seem to stop coming here! It just goes to show you... while you "never get a second chance to make a first impression" (or however that quote goes), sometimes your first impression - especially of a restaurant during their opening week - might just be entirely wrong. So suck it up, and go back at a more appropriate time. Lesson learned. Bam Bam Bakery offers gluten-free goodies for everyone. It's on a great corner on Commercial Street in downtown Old Port, just outside the hubhub of the usual craziness. The bakery is rustic feeling with their wooden tables and has big, sunny windows. The ordering/paying process can be a bit confusing, the staff - I feel - is used to this and tries to make your experience as effortless as possible. Upon my re-introduction to the place I had an iced coffee and a chocolate-cherry scone (which was pretty good, but I thought could have used more cherry icing) that was literally the size of a birthday cake. Not a piece. The whole thing. All for about $5. On my most recent trip I had one of their Thai Iced Tea with soy and a artichoke, spinach, ricotta savory roll/strata type thing. All for about $7. WHAT?! Where are these amazing prices even coming from?! ESPECIALLY at a gluten-free bakery. ESPECIALLY in Portland, ME. Insane. I love it. Anyway, both things I ordered were pretty good, though I thought the Thai Iced Tea needed sugar and the strata type thing needed salt. Regardless of these insanely small, super personal-to-me misses... I'm a fan. I want to go back. As in right now. There's SO MUCH on the menu I want to try. Every time I'm in there, I regret not getting more - which sounds so gluttonous, I know, but it's true. I'm so blown away at the exceptional job they do about offering vegan and vegetarian selections, too. Thanks for that! And thanks for always updating your social media with today's selection of soups, pizzas, and more. You stay current, you're relevant, and you make some darn good stuff!

It is impressive that when you walk up to the door, there is a warning sign out of respect for the gluten-free community: no outside food. Cool. Second point of coolness: they serve real beverages! Not just some coffee brewed and sitting in a carafe or huge vessel... Espresso drinks, yes! These drinks are legit keep you moving or jumpstart your day espresso beverages - not just some watery sugary coffee-flavored concoction. That in and of itself tells you this bakery is for real on several levels. They have savory food and loaves of bread, but this sweets fanatic doesn't go to a bakery just because of that. Life is too short to save dessert and sweets for later! Gimme the goods, now- and boy do they give it to you. The displays at the counter behind the glass are so tempting. It's amazing how they take care to label every item in terms of egg, soy, dairy and vegan. I tried all the vegan options, since there were only 4 that day. It's a respectable showing. Really though, the amazing item was not the delicious favorite chocolate crinkle with the rich chocolate flavor hidden beneath a snowy layer of confectioners' sugar... It was the funky monkey with the chocolate and vanilla drizzle that wowed me. If you have peanut allergies, sorry! This cookie had some coconut, too. The funky monkey has the best texture for a hearty cookie- vegan or not, gluten- free or not. If you didn't know it, you wouldn't care to know. If you did know it was vegan and gluten- free you'd bow down and pay homage to the baking skills needed to create that beautiful sweet piece of bliss. The vegan breakfast bomb and ginger molasses vegan cookie are also pretty respectable, but the flavor profiles are not likely to sway those not already predisposed to those ingredients and spices- still delish! Anyhow... Plenty of space to sit down and partake. Great space too- not crowded, nice feeling of relaxing with your tasty choices. The prices are fair, very fair. Eat one, and get a box for later... Or you'll be sad!

Love the signs that specify special diet options. It's why I came here! Great food and location. Service is a bit lackluster, but it is mid tourist season, so unsurprising. As an earthy type person in an earthy type café, I'd love to see a conscious decrease in their use of single-use plastics. Just asking customers consistently if they're 'here' or 'to go' would make a big difference in the café's use of plastic cups, lids, and straws.

I'm not a gluten-free person, but while in Portland we passed by Bam Bam and it looked so good, we knew we had to stop in for a bit! And you know what, we couldn't tell that our food was gluten-free at all! We got some bread, a whoopie pie (when in Maine...), and coffee. Thumbs up for all of the above! Friendly service, and reasonably fast. They have comfy seating areas as well as a nice little kid's nook with toys and an easel in the back by the bathrooms. Just wish it stayed open later - we could have stayed here for much longer!

It was so nice to walk into a bakery and know that I can eat anything in the entire place! So many good things to choose from! Had two pieces of pizza, a BBQ Chicken and spinach feta. Both were super good, thin crust and delicious. Also had a piece of quiche which had a great crust, light and flaky! Took many things to go, a chocolate whoopie pie, small apple pie, peanut butter chocolate bar, and two chocolate cookies. Have only eaten the chocolate cookies so far, which were very good, moist, flavorful, and covered in powdered sugar.

This little earthy place is very good considering what you are getting for the price. The food and drink is all natural and gluten free, don't come here if u are looking for high fructose corn syrup and saccharin. It is not a touristy spot but it's definitely worth a visit if u are in portland.

Tastes great and gluten free, YES PLEASE! Look, I have real life allergies. While I understand that some people avoid gluten or other ingredients for a personal lifestyle choice, I will actually break out in hives if I eat the wrong thing (or if you rub avocado on me, but that's a different story!). I am willing to sacrifice to the benedryl gods on occasion for a fancy meal (infrequent but yes), I try to maintain a firm hold on what I eat so that I am not awkwardly itching for the rest of the day. After that awkward paragraph.... Bam Bam Bakery makes wheat free delicious baked goods. So delicious that when I brought some home to save for later, my father and my brother (not allergy sufferers) helped themselves and didn't even realize that it was gluten free (they thought it was delicious as well). It doesn't taste like cardboard or have that weird aftertaste that a lot of modified recipes are left with, but rather tastes like well crafted goodness. I really appreciated that their food is clearly labelled and staff understands allergies, so they were able to answer any questions without the eyeroll that you get at some places when you ask about ingredients. It is clear that there is great customer service! Overall, I will definitely be back for more and I know my non-allergy family will be too!

I can say I knew Bevin when... She was working out of her house. I remember walking up the stairs to get my first birthday cake made by her. At a time when dairy free wasn't popular she had us covered... And it was in delicious frosting. The addition of the store front has really allowed her to spread her wings. Pizza, soups, pot pie, shepherd's pie, sweet and savory bread and rolls that are fresh and soft and moist. Then there are the sweet treats. Hello peanut butter bar, whoopie pie, cookies, cupcakes and more! The topper for me... Thai iced tea with soy. Not to be missed. The King's Head has her rolls for their burgers! Please be aware that since many of her customers have gluten allergies she asks that you do not bring those sort if items in to the store. You are welcome to sit and enjoy a game, chat with friends and enjoy the lovely space. Bam Bam also separates their trash and has convenient sections for you to differentiate from trash, recycle and compost. And on a special note: Bevin and her crew were nice enough to donate treats to the Tour de Cure event-a fundraiser for Diabetes. Her donation meant that after we burned through calories cycling, those of us who are GF and DF had options for dessert.

I can't adequately explain in words how much I love Bam Bam Bakery. Not only do they offer a variety of allergy-friendly sweet and savory baked goods (everything is gluten-free, some things are dairy-free, soy-free, nut-free or vegan), but everything I've tried from Bam Bam has been delicious! The daily menu includes cookies, bars and brownies, cakes, muffins, scones, breads, soups, a specialty pizza, chicken pot pie, shepherd's pie, and a specialty Stromboli. Today I am enjoying a "lunch Stromboli" consisting of sliced turkey, mashed redskin potatoes and cranberry sauce wrapped in a buttery herb-topped bread-like crust. It was like Thanksgiving dinner in a Stromboli and it was just perfect on a brisk fall day. I am also picking up a special order today: I came into the bakery with my sister last week and happened to try Bam Bam's pineapple coconut scone, which was so mouth-wateringly delicious that my sis and I were actually making audible "mmmm mmmhh!" noises as we ate it. We asked if this flavor was a regularly available item, and learned it was the first time they had ever made it and that they weren't sure if they'd make it again! Well, that was not going to work for me. Once I find something that delicious that I can actually eat with my dietary restrictions, I am going to try to get it as often as I can. Luckily Bam Bam also does special orders, and they were willing to make me a FULL order of scones (which I think equals six truly enormous scones, really twelve at least if they were normal sized) for just $20. I am going to take this huge box home with me and freeze most of it...maybe share a little. Then again, maybe not. Highly, highly recommended!

Thinking about going to Bam Bam? Say yes yes! This is my go to coffee shop given how close in proximity it is to my office. They even serve my hometown brew, Rock City Coffee! Their treats are delicious and they even have lunch! The soups are good and come with a gluten free roll. I've also heard great things about their quiche. They also serve gluten free pizza and it usually gets swiped up before 2 so make sure to get it early! Their desserts always look so amazing and their scones are HUGE! I've had hit or miss service but the last couple of times have been stellar! I definitely recommend this place, good vibe, good coffee and good atmosphere.

Love it!

Awesome selection of baked goods. Three stars is because the parking is a bummer and the gluten free bagels were TERRIBLE-at the very least they need salt. I've made GF bagels at home and they had a much fuller taste than these. Cookies and bread are winners though! Awesome to see a TOTALLY GF bakery!

My 17 year old granddaughter has celiac disease, and has tried all sorts of gluten free baked goods in a number of cities in Ohio, Connecticut, New York and now Portland. She says that the assortment and quality at Bam Bam bakery is outstanding - the best she's every tried. In fact, she told me that she wants to move to Portland. I hoped it was because I live here, but no, it was because the Bam Bam bakery is here.

I was walking around with a friend, shopping on this beautiful day, and we stopped into a different cupcake shop first. Friend asked if they had gluten-free, and the clerk pointed us to Bam Bam. We walked down and my friend repeatedly asked if I was sure I waned to buy gluten-free snacks (I don't have gluten issues). I told her I wanted to try something new. She got the peanut butter cookie bar, and I had the cookie dough bar. Both were great! She was pleasantly surprised at how fantastic it was, and said she wished more gluten-free food was half as palatable as this.

I bought an assortment of gluten-free dessert stuff to bring to a Sleestack (pronounced Celiac) friend and her kids. They all LOVED everything.

AHHHH! Okay. Bam Bam Bakery has THE best gluten-free goodies I have ever eaten. Hands down. No dispute. Like....what?! How is this even possible?? I just found out last year I'm gluten intolerant and I've been on an epic quest to find good gluten free yum yums. Up until July, I also had to be dairy free, egg free, all-sorts-of-other-important-delicious-things-free, so that made the quest all the harder, and it now makes being only gluten-free a piece of cake! (bahaha....::cheesy trombone::) I went in here with my husband last weekend while we were enjoying a lovely day in Portland, and was bowled over at the size of the place. Super big! And everything in it is gluten free. Nary a painful grain to be found. I was drooling over their bakery case and the girl behind the counter was like "sorry, we usually have so much more stuff. I don't know what's going on but we've been flooded by gluten free people today!" I didn't even notice! It looked like a great selection to me. I got a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting and a peanut butter cookie for later. My husband got a vanilla/vanilla cupcake, and we sat by the window to eat. This cupcake. ::weeps:: Gluten free or not, it is probably the best cupcake I've ever eaten at a bakery or cupcake place. My husband was equally bowled over. After having sampled a cupcake from another Portland cupcakery that shall not be named on multiple occasions and being grossed out with them, he was savoring his gluten free cupcake and said to me "baby...I think we may have finally found a real cupcake at a bakery. Wow." the boy isn't even gluten-free and he'd eat one of these over the others any day. The buttercream frosting was perfect. The cake was spongy and moist with a delicate crumb that tasted neither artificial nor obviously gluten-free. No gritty mouthfeel. No funky aftertaste. Just pure deliciousness. If this had been a mixed use bakery I would have been tempted to compulsively double check with the waitstaff to make sure I wasn't poisoning myself. The peanut butter cookie was equally amazing. I nibbled on bits of it throughout the afternoon and was in peanut buttery, chewy/crunchy/sandy/salty/sugary heaven. We are looking to move to Portland and I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know that if I'm craving something sweet I will be able to catapult myself over the moon at Bam Bam Bakery. YAY! ...if you couldn't tell, I liked it. ; )

I recently visited this bakery for a business meeting. The food was fine and the coffee was great, but the owner is doing herself a real disservice for having such an unfriendly, combative person at the front counter. Both my business associate and I (who are both friendly, respectful, happy people. And good tippers!) were downright horrified by the attitude of the person who waited on us. As a local, I was thrilled to be visiting a locally-owned bakery. Everyone has a bad day now and then, and I can forgive being a bit off from time to time, but this person was seeking confrontation with customers. In a retail environment, every customer counts, and this person is hurting Bam Bam every day. I won't be visiting Bam Bam again.

Lots of reasons I love this place (for a few months after it opened last year it was a weekly Saturday treat). 1. TASTINESS. You don't have to be gluten-free to dig Bam Bam. My faves: the whoopie pies, PB&J muffins, and some of their bars...but everything's delicious! Most other g-free baked goods range from dense-as-a-brick to inedible. Not Bam Bam. YUM. They even have little tasty extras like vanilla-infused sugar for coffee/tea. 2. NO CONTAMINATION WORRIES. I don't have a big gluten issue, but my man E has celiac disease. At Bam Bam, we can relax and enjoy without worrying about how things were prepared and whether it'll make E sick. While we're lucky in Portland to have other places offering g-free items on their menu, lots of those items are created in normal kitchens, which can make life lousy for truly gluten-sensitive folks like E. 3. ATMOSPHERE. Bam Bam's one of the best places in downtown Portland to meet for coffee these days. I have work meetings here now. It's centrally located and not crowded like other hot coffee spots. From the wood beams, light airy space, Commercial St. view, and comfy couches and chairs to the Cake Wrecks books (laugh-out-loud-hilarious!), table games, and kids' play area and WiFi--this is a place I can stick around for hours. 4. PRICE. Pretty affordable (especially coffee), maybe because it's still up & coming.

Treats are yummy. The lines were cumbersome and service ify while I was there. Staff seemed overwhelmed and they were under stocked for what the demand was that day. That said I am always appreciative to find a gluten free bakery and the food was good.

  • Jeff L.

The best gluten free bakery anywhere that I have found. The best thing about it is that they have taken care not to be a good gf bakery but a nice space where people without diet restrictions might go. It is easy to make a few cookies and call yourself a gluten free bakery, it is another thing to make good, healthy breads and quiches and such. Their honey oat bread is unique. As for the service issues, I have always personally had good service, so I have no complaints.

We also have a soy allergy and received no response when we asked if they could accommodate it. Not promising for a bakery that caters to such a specialty market. Very disappointed, but we won't be visiting after having read several similar concerns here.

Gluten free in portland Maine? Heck yes! We had a delicious whoopie pie and a cupcake. Couldn't even tell it was gluten free! Portland Maine has really come a long way. I'm very pleased to find a place that's delicious, trendy, reasonably priced, and gluten free!!!! A hidden gem in Portland. Check this place out!

First visit to Bam Bam Bakery. 3 pieces of Breakfast Scata (very, very good - probably amazing while still fresh), a lemon bar (not the best - pretty dry, flavor was ok), 1 coconut macaroon (arguably the best I've had), coconut bread - just ok, nothing I'll go back for but it was dense and moist - a pretty good bread for gluten free. And finally, banana chocolate (chip?) Bread - same as the coconut bread but a bit drier. The prices are beyond fair, I spent very little money - and for a gluten free bakery in this town, that's pretty amazing. The help/staff: sub-par. Owner Bevin kept to the background and seemed generally unimpressed and very unapproachable. The help at the counter made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by buying so many things. I'll bring a friend there that has gluten allergies but don't really see myself going back as the whole experience seemed very discomforting. Not what you want to feel at a bakery - let alone a nice little local mom-and-pop type shop.

So glad to have this tasty option available in Portland. My only disappointment is that some of the staff are unfriendly, even sometimes have a weird vague look in their eyes. I always wondered why until I met the owner last week. She seemed unhappy and angry, I guess it's that trickle-down effect. Too bad, since you create food that makes others happy. Smile. . . it's good customer service, plus you'll feel better, too.

As a city girl with a partially gluten-free diet, I know a lot of awesome places and never expect much for the gluten-free offerings while I'm on vacation. Well let me tell you, Bam Bam Bakery was an extremely pleasant surprise!!!!!! Honestly the best gluten-free bakery I have ever been to. We tried a lot of the offerings: Chocolate chip cookie, quiche, yogurt parfait (with their house granola), oatmeal, lemon bar, and a whoopie pie. Nobody could even tell that any of it was gluten-free because it all tasted so good. I'll definitely stop by this little gem every time I make it up to Portland!

a dedicated gluten-free bakery with dairy-free options and a few egg-free options. i had a chocolate crinkle cookie and a bagel. the bagel was ok - it tasted like it was made with bean flour. i wish there were more egg-free options, but i'm friends with 2 professional gluten-free bakers who also use a lot of egg and as a home baker, i understand why. but still - it is doable and would be nice to see.

I do like most of their baked goods, especially the coffee cake and all the muffins, except for the blueberry, it was bland and tasteless compared to all the others they make. The staff rarely smiles. They are quiet and unenthusiastic. I do appreciate having such easy access to gluten free and dairy free baked goods but what is up with the staff?

Yay!

Best priced coffee in town! I haven't eaten there yet, so I can't give them 5 stars yet. ;) After spending $3.50 for a very small iced regular old coffee at Tandem yesterday, I just had to sing the praises of fairly priced coffee. Here, here Bam Bam!

This little earthy place is very good considering what you are getting for the price. The food and drink is all natural and gluten free, don't come here if u are looking for high fructose corn syrup and saccharin. It is not a touristy spot but it's definitely worth a visit if u are in portland.

  • Pamela V.

This place is a healthy choice for a morning after visiting Portland's nightlife. It has delicious selections of baked goods, teas, and coffees while catering to the gluten-free, diabetic, and/or health conscious person who may or may not be in your group. Wait, am I one of those?

I love that this is a completely gluten free bakery but that it's also delicious enough for people who don't need to be gf. It's also great that there are some vegan options as well. There are two reasons why I won't give it 5 stars - many baked goods are too sugary and I'd prefer a different milk alternative other than soy. Do try the pizza and soup though! Different flavors on rotation and so far they're all yummy!

I ordered dinner rolls for Thanksgiving. While placing my order, I purchased a raspberry, walnut, cinnamon pastry...shaped like a bear claw. It was so so fresh and tasty. I should have ordered 4 of those for a Thanksgiving breakfast. Just FYI, the rolls I bought were fantastic. I got 8 for $6 and one roll is like a meal. Fluffy yet dense. Good for those leftover turkey sandwiches. OMG!

It's nice to have a gluten free place to go. Pretty location. Clean. They have delicious soup options. If you have a sweet tooth there is plenty of baked goods for you to enjoy

The best coconut carrot cake ever. Fantastic selection, terrific service. Ordered ahead for some birthdays on Great Diamond Island and picked up three cakes, a pie and two loaves of bread before getting on the ferry. By far, the best gluten free bakery I've even eaten from.

  • Amy M.

Yummmmm Bam Bam is so good. Even if you don't have particular dietary needs, still crazy good, holds its own and even exceeds many gluten laden pastry items I've had. Particular items of obsession: The cinnamon streusel cake...the pumpkin bread when in season.... And my most recent to die for item, a choco chip cookie bar from the cold case, pretty much the best cookie I've ever had.

OMG! Need I say more? Well, I will. I got the lemon bar. Pure Heaven! And their freshly ground coffee beans made the perfect dark roasted cup of coffee to go with it. The best thing I got in Portland!

Love it!

Yay!

AHHHH!

Awesome selection of baked goods. Three stars is because the parking is a bummer and the gluten free bagels were TERRIBLE-at the very least they need salt. I've made GF bagels at home and they had a much fuller taste than these. Cookies and bread are winners though! Awesome to see a TOTALLY GF bakery!
