We were craving Japanese food after our flight into Bangor and found Yoshi. My family is from Japan so I've grown up eating Japanese foods, and I have eaten it from Tokyo, California, New York and even South Africa. Needless to say this place was fantastic! Great quality sushi from their salmon to white (butter) fish and their dessert was delicious! We had the pumpkin pie tempura and it was so good and unlike anything I've had before. We are two hours away but will definitely make the drive back to have it!

Really excellent and high quality sushi/sashimi. The owner does an excellent job of carefully preparing the fish and the rolls. I have had pricey high-end sushi in NYC and CA...this place parallels many a high end sushi restaurant. We'll be back!

Yoshi is simply awesome. Yoshi has become an addiction. I have celiac disease and they had a great understanding of my problem and how to accommodate me. Can't wait to go again.

This small restaurant in downtown Brewer is an excellent change of pace from the fast food and traditional american eateries available in the area. The only other ethnic foods available in the downtown Brewer area are a typical Chinese buffet and a greek restaurant, so Yoshi really stands out. It is located between a pizza place and a bike shop so parking can be at a premium at times. If you enjoy Ichiban in Bangor, you will be interested to know that there was a split between the two managers of that restaurant and one of them started Yoshi, taking one of the Ichiban chefs with him. So many of the dishes you were accustomed to at Ichiban will be served the way you like at Yoshi as well. However, Yoshi's menu is larger and has some interesting twists that Ichiban does not. The decor makes this place stand out as half of the seating area are faux low japanese style and will really bring you into the ambiance of having traditional japanese dishes. I've never seen the place very crowded so no need to make reservations for the japanese seating areas, although this may change as word spreads about this little place. In particular I recommend any of the sake (salmon) dishes, they are always absolutely delicious. The sashimi will practically melt in your mouth. Also the make a great shrimp tempura roll for those who aren't into the raw fish. Also if you are wanting takeout, Yoshi's is much faster than either Ichiban or Green Tea. Your order will be ready in 15 minutes or less, comparable to 20 to 25 for Green Tea and up to 40 minutes for Ichiban.

Nice place to go. Good food with reasonable price compare to other restaurant. I like their sushi and fish. I could give them five stars because of the food but I am not big fan of their services.

THANK YOU YOSHI FOR EXISTING! after spending much time living in northern/southern california and new york this place is the saving grace of asian cusine in Bangor. It is surprisingly authenic for the vast span of menu items. I was worried that it might be a place where they have alot of items and poorly executed. Everything we had was fresh, and tasted great. Although the waitress was very nice, the food came out SLOW in increments of 10 or more minutes per dish which ruins ones appetite. I ordered sushi which came after we've finished all our appetizers and main course, which just doesn't make sense.

This place is amazing. Seriously, one of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever been to. The sushi is fresh, and flavorful. The owner/sushi chef is personable, creative, friendly, and excellent at catering to peoples dietary needs. You can pick Sushi in the larger hand rolls, or as maki, and with brown rice, or sushi rice. I ordered a tamago roll, and he had only one piece left. So he sent it to the table, free of charge. It was delicious. The wait staff was also friendly, and attentive. Checking in, but never hovering. I love marble sodas, and haven't had one in oh so long. Thank you Yoshi for the wonderful meal!

Excellent food. The Hokkaiyaki Maki is the best sushi I have ever had (watch out for the price on that one), and the ponzu sauce that comes with the soft shell crab is delicious. The spicy mayo at Yoshi is actually spicy unlike the stuff at Green Tea (which is still good). I don't understand the point of the tatami section. It's the same tables as the floor, but you sit on the raised ground to eat instead. It just makes everything slightly inconvenient and I wish they would get rid of it.

Delicious! We stopped here after a long day of travel and it really hit the spot. We got there right as they opened and we weren't the only people waiting to get in (which seemed like a good sign). The staff was attentive. The waiter was extremely eager to make recommendations. The sushi master was very friendly and greeting everyone who came in the door. My boyfriend got two sushi rolls: a more typical roll and one of the specials. Both were delicious. I got a sweet potato tempura roll, which was a bit smaller but also delicious. I also got a noodle dish that was perfectly cooked and so good. We got a green tea mochi for dessert. It was cheap by our (South Florida) standards. All in all, a great meal!

Drive three hours to try this place. Has traditional Japanese seating as well as American. Sushimi was very fresh and delicious. Service was excellent and prepared quickly. I will visit again.

we very much enjoy Yoshi. Having spent 43 years in Ca. enjoyed a variety of Sushi restaurants in Orange, San Diego and LA, San Francisco. Yoshi is by far the best in This part of Maine. We dine in and many times I take out to enjoy at home. The Gyozo soup, seafood tempura and variety of rolls make it interesting.Michael and Yoshi are very hospitable..

I'd never seen traditional Japanese style seating in a restaurant before. The people using it looked comfortable. But my hubby has a bum knee and we weren't sure if the Japanese seating would aggravate it or not, so we opted for the regular seating. Delicious sushi and sashimi. You must order the sea urchin called uni. Unbelievable!! I'd been hearing about it for years from shows like No Reservations, Top Chef, Chopped, etc. The first time my hubby and I went to Yoshi they didn't have uni on hand. We went back a month later and were able to order it then. Just unbelievable. Please order the uni, you will love it, and it will enable Yoshi to keep a fresh regular stock of it.

This place is a great sushi spot with fantastic staff. I enjoyed the food in quality, taste, and presentation. Prices are fairly reasonable as well. :)

Me and my wife eat a lot of sushi and this one is our favorite in Maine so far. Had a great experience both times we have been there. The Gyoza Is the best I have had. If its not homemade it would surprise the crap out of me. Super light and fluffy. In order to give this place 5 stars I will have to try again and get more diverse items. Check it out. MMMmm Good.

I been to all the sushi places around Bangor and I would have to say yoshi is the best. Just the service alone is very good but with the prices and the sushi makes it even more great..I would recommend this to anyone of my friends or family .

So sad to write this review because I really do enjoy the food. Ordered something that I was assured was like the item they did not have. Got it home and it wasn't anything like it. When I called to clear it up and see if I could get something else the young girl taking orders laughed at me. Continued to laugh and not offer any solution. When asked to speak to a manager she said they where out of town. She had no one for us to talk to about her rude behavior. Still waiting to talk to that manager. Very sad that we will no longer be getting our sushi from here anymore. Might be good food but when someone is that rude, it completely turns me off from ever visiting that business again.

I would give it 4 stars but I was disappointed in the choice of rolls on the menu. I didn't see many unique varieties and there were way too many tempura options. Other than that, the miso soup was very tasty, sashimi was good, caterpillar roll was good and the service was polite. The place was a very low key neighborhood restaurant. Reasonably priced.

  • Veronica C.

We were pleasantly surprised with this neighborhood find a few miles from our hotel. I had a miso soup, house salad, a vegetable roll combo, and fried mango for dessert. Everything was delicious and the servers were friendly and quick.

Sadly, our visit to Yoshi was far from perfect. We waited almost an hour from the time we ordered until our bento boxes were placed on our table. The tempura was just ok and my beef negimi was very overcooked, making the scallions slimy and tasteless. The star of the dinner was my husband's pork katsu which was very good! Overall, our visit was not a good one and I doubt we will return.

This is the BEST place to go for some inexpensive sushi! I have been so many times and their food is always delicious. I try to get different types of sushi every time I go, but I always start with the Miso soup because it's delicious. Also, the ambiance is great! The downside is that it can get quite busy, and at times it can be difficult to accommodate groups. But if you go during an off-hour, then everything is perfect!

Good sushi with great service. I'm an avid sushi lover and while this wasn't the best sushi, it was certainly a pleasant surprise for Bangor,ME. I had the Mt Katadhin roll along with a Rainbow roll and a couple pieces of Sake nigiri. The Sake was alright, but not as cleanly cut as other places, but still good. The Rainbow roll was good and right on par with most sushi restaurants I've been to. The Mt Katadhin roll was strange, but I liked it. A lot of flavors including papaya, strawberry, mango, and spicy guacamole on top. It was a lot to put on/in a roll, but actually very tasty. Overall, good place and would recommend this place when visiting Bangor.

I don't always write reviews but this restaurant is too good and I have to write one! We ordered be nebayaki udon and sake don, each was only about 14 dollars but the size was huuuuuge! Unlike most of the restaurants, the sake don here actually had a lot of salmon, and it was absolutely delicious! At first we also ordered a maki but we got really full and had to cancel the maki order. This would definitely be the place to go in bangor.

Traditional Japanese fare so subtle quality touches matter and this place adds these where most affordable Japanese places have skimped over time: lightly marinated chicken (rather than plain) and runny egg in the Naveyaki Udon, fresh fried soft shell crab (rather than pre-prepared) in the spider roll, spicy grated daikon as a side to the cold soba. Only things missing would've been specialized nuances that only elite or niche Japanese places (e.g. ramen-only, soba-only, sushi-only) would have: fresh grated wasabi, house made soba, rare sea-food. This is meant to be a casual, affordable, family friendly place so lacking these is only fair. This place does the classics exceptionally well!

When I am in Bangor, Maine, my restaurant of choice is Yoshi. I now look forward to ordering and know that I will have a great meal although I was slightly more critical on this visit than the last. On my last visit, I noted that parking may be an issue since the lot is very small. There was a bit of mayhem in the parking lot around 6pm when I was picking up my order. Cars had begun to make their own spots. Parking must be a big issue on the weekend when many more people are out to eat. I HAD to order the Jicama Rolls. Each order comes with four pieces and I thought long and hard about possibly having two orders of these rolls. I also ordered the cabbage wrapped spinach appetizer which comes in a tempura sauce broth. This was interesting and really grew on me as I ate the entire cup. I ordered two sushi rolls and decided the special rolls were just mediocre in comparison to the Jicama rolls. I will be back in the area in April and will eat here again. I've already started to think about what I will order - Jicacma rolls are a definite, probably two orders in addition to a stir fry or perhaps just a handful of appetizers. They have their menu and hours on the web at yoshi09brewerme.com

Been enjoying their food before the restaurant opened and feel that I have had just about everything they have to offer, but I was wrong. Ting informed me that they had a special desert when we walked in nad I nonchalantly said "yeah, OK..." and we were seated. We started with edamame (steamed soybeans) and oshinko & tsukemono (assorted pickled vegetables) and commented on how fresh and crisp everything was, as usual. We then saw a newer special, Clam Stirfry, that we have spotted the last few time we were in. It came to the table and the aroma and presentation set my mouth watering. Mohogany Clams piled high, were resting in their shells in little pools of a magical broth that was slightly spicy and sweet with a wonderful fragrance from the combo of ginger and basil. So delicious the sauce was, it required an additional side of rice to accompany it home so it did not go to waste. I generally think sushi in a Japanese restaurant, but I have been trying some other items and have been very pleased. This time the Pad Thai was on order and although I am not a Pad Thai afficionado - it may be the best I have ever had. Or maybe I was still on such a high from the clam stirfry I wasn't in my right mind. But today when I brought it out for lunch not only was it delicious, the most fussy eaters I have for co-workers commented on how delicious it smelled. Then as we paid the check the special dessert arrived and it was tempura fried bannana chunks accompanied by kiwi, strawberries and oranges - drizzled with hot chocolate sauce coconut reduction. Mind you I am not a "sweets" guy - I would go back just for this. Very well done, in taste, presentation, balance. Really quite a nice end to a long day.

Great service and excellent food! We ordered bento box with salmon teriyaki and tempura. Salmon is very fresh and authentic sauce!

The best sushi in the Bangor area. Fresh fish, and a good selection of "cooked" makis and vegetarian makis for the non-raw-fish fan. There is also an excellent menu of other choices. Try the saba shoiyaki (broiled mackerel fillet, not on the menu). The faux tatami section offers an interesting way to dine. The owners and sushi chefs have great personalities and there are a number of excellent servers as well. I love that they've added the option of brown rice for their maki. Their sushi easily stands up to anything I have eaten in NYC, Boston, or San Francisco.

The sushi was good, at least the tuna and salmon (skip the surf clam) and the beef tataki was good, but was deceitfully arranged atop an ENTIRE sliced red onion (that's ALOT of onion) so there really wasn't much beef and it should have been more saturated in the juice, which was tasty, but under-enjoyed since it was hidden beneath a ridiculous bed of onion. The miso soup was very tasty. My main reason for rating only 3 stars was the VERY slow and amateurish service. It took forever to get my drink order taken and even longer to actually get it. Miso soup should come out immediately, but it was brought WITH my tataki after a very long time and the server frantically told me that the sushi would be out shortly, as if I needed three things to eat at the same time. Um, slow your roll, please...and speed up at the same time. Just seemed like inexperienced timing. Yoshi was very nice, though! He wished us well and that he hoped that we would come back. "Maybe tomorrow? You never know!" He said. So cute!

Wow this place was a pleasant surprise. I said to myself. Sushi is sushi is sushi-Especially if you had the opportunity to experience pretty good places across N. America. Sat by the sushi bar. I ordered a veggie tempura which comes with salad and miso soup. All were delightful. I then I was undecided with what I wanted to order so I went safe. Did a spicy tuna maki w/ avocado. The sushi master suggested a Hawaiian/or Honolulu can't remember but it was basically what I was going to order with mango added and tempura flakes. I requested to add the avocado. Simple order and your typical maki right??? I don't know what happened but it was extraordinary!!! This place is special. There was even an elderly couple that drives 45 mins away from Ball Harbor to Bangor just to eat here. I see why! If you are in Bangor and are up for sushi-this is a must. And sit st the bar so the chef can suggest a plate that suits your pallet.

I'm from the Pacific Northwest where the Japanese food is superb. Came here to give a try and it was awesome! Plus I'm Asian and I live near New York City in the states. You won't be disappointed coming here!

Meh. Yoshi serves up very average sushi, but that's ok, because there's little competition in Brewer, ME. Positives: - fresh ginger - large spring rolls with tasty peanut/Sriracha dipping sauces - huge menu with plenty of variety Negatives: - thick chopsticks that weren't user friendly (hey, when you get used to thin chopsticks, you'll be surprised how the bigger ones are harder to maneuver) - the larger rolls fell apart (all of the Maine maki and the Philadelphia maki pieces turned into unrecognizable rice clumps upon dipping in the soy sauce) - the "appetizer" spring rolls came out approx 15 minutes after ordering (we had already finished an entire bottle of sake by then) - just say no to the sunken tables with disgusting floors (I'm supposed to put my bare feet down there?!) - not particularly cheap for the area This place will tide us over during our time in Maine, but I miss the sushi I used to eat in San Antonio (you read that correctly) and NYC.

Service seriously stinks. After waiting for at least an hour we had to ask what was up! "Mishap" with the ordering system. Why did we have to ask? I've been there before and like the food but service is always slow. ..it was too much today. Paid for our appetizer and left. While our waitress rudely said, "I told them it would be a wait"! I will get my Japanese food some where else!

YOSHI is absolutely the best sushi I have ever had! I have tried just about every roll on the menu and while I have favorites they are all FRESH and delicious! Best traditional roll: Lover Roll Best non traditional roll: Mexican Roll (jalapeno sauce is amazing) Favorite Roll: Honolulu Best dessert: Fried Cheesecake w Green Tea Fried Ice Cream Excellent set up, prices are very reasonable (especially for sushi), and Mike and Ting are hilarious. Only con: Service can be slow on a busy Friday or Saturday. But they are always friendly!

Great Sushi and don't ignore the other dishes on the menu. Very nice tsukemono, and I'm a big fan of tsukemono. Maybe the best Japanese restaurant north of Boston

  • Rebekah S.

Chefs are always eager to please. Fairly creative rolls, although they don't rotate often. Majority of maki and nigiri/ sashimi is well executed. Certain staff are excellent about making sure no allergens make it into my food. (I did have a reaction once, but that was my own fault for not inquiring adequately.) Hokkaiyaki is amazing (they reformulate it w/o tempura batter and w/ shitake mushrooms for me :-) The pool of sushi restaurants I've tried is deep and wide, and I consider this quality sushi. All in all good value.

Went here while on vacation. It is truly not what you would expect to find in central Maine. The atmosphere is simple and traditional and the sushi was prepared very nicely. The service is what puts the final touch on a very enjoyable sushi experience.

Great little Japanese restaurant in Brewer. I love the faux low style Japanese tables where you have to take off your shoes. The other tables look fast food style though. The place could use A/C bit the food was terrific! I had the Pad Thai, the sauce was done perfectly. I also had some flying fish roe sushi and some tuna maki, all done well. I'll be going back for more.

wow, i was surprise they have good sushi in Brewer, Maine. I though only in big city has good sushi. This Yoshi place prove me wrong. The fishes are very fresh, services are excellent, people are friendly. I would drop by at Yoshi next time I am in Bangor, ME. The Manager told me its just open couple days ago. already it is great and atmosphere is very nice.

Love everything about Yoshi. Service was welcoming and attentive. Menu extensive. Decor was pleasant. Food was plentiful and delicious. Good variety of veggies in shrimp/veg tempura combo (shrimp was great too!). My son enjoyed his heaping bowl of udon soup, had to take some home. Wonderful last dinner with him for awhile as he heads back to UMaine. Will definitely be back!
