My sister and I ate lunch there yesterday and it was awesome! The chips (paper thin, crispy, not greasy) and salsa (fresh made every day, the tomatoes chopped fine, no excess water, full of flavor) are worth the visit alone. We shared the taco platter and the "Special Nachos" with ground beef, and both were EXCELLENT. We will go again.

If Yelp would allow me, I wouldn't give this place a single star. We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday on our way back to DC from Sugarloaf Mtn. We asked to sit outside and were given menus and told that someone would be with us in a minute. We went out to the patio and settled in perusing the menu. We waited outside for over 15 minutes without seeing a single waiter or waitress, only an endless supply of smokers coming out from the bar. Finally, we got up and left. We went down the mall a ways and ate elsewhere. When walking back to our car we noticed that our menus were still on the table an hour after we had first sat down. I can't comment on the food, but the service definitely leaves something to be desired.

My wife and i come here alot for good mexican food at low prices. We're always surprised at our check total thinking something's missing. Their wings with yuca sauce is a must have and the fajitas are always on point! I agree with the other reviewers that the bar can be a bit rowdy and unruly but i think they have it under control. The wait staff and manager are always friendly and service is always pretty quick!

We have been going to La Mexicana every Friday night for at least the last year. With so many restaurants in and around the area being so packed that you have to wait for more than an hour to get a table, La Mexicana is great! We have never had to wait and can just walk right in, no muss no fuss. White the décor is a bit campy and dated, the food is FABULOUS and the prices are incredible for what you get. We know what we like and never even have to look at the menu. The service is friendly and it never takes us very long to get our food, contrary to other reviews here. The chips and salsa are fresh and delicious...one of our favorite parts. If you enjoy good Mexican food and want somewhere to go on a regular basis where you don't have to wait...La Mexicana is definitely for you.

I have been going to this place for years (ever since it was El Mexicano - located at the end of the commons). Everything I've tried is yummy. They're taco salad is to die for. I love their queso & chips. For the amount of money you pay you get a lot. I love that my work is a block away from the restaurant. The owner, Roy is super nice and accomodating. I would recommend this place to all my friends and family.

What's that? You want to reward me with 10% off just for doing something I normally do...checking in on Yelp? YES, please! So, I walk in and see a lot of handsome men at the bar so I walk over and decide to sit at the bar! (Will tell you at the end why I really sat at the bar) Pauline, the bartender walks over immediately to greet me. I ask her a bunch of questions and she was very nice and patient. I ordered queso ($5) which was pretty tasty. The taco salad ($7) came in a fried shell with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and ground beef. You could also get chunky chicken or shrimp. The best thing on the menu are the fajita taco salads which come with onions and peppers. I used to come here for lunch and get the fajita steak salad. So delicious! I wanted to try the guacamole and ordered a side for $1. It was fresh and cold. I chose the tres lesches cake ($3) instead of the chimichanga sundae ($5). The cake was moist and just that little bit of sweetness to end the meal. Next time I am coming back for the sundae! Before I left I asked Pauline if tables in the dining room were seat yourself. She said that there was only one person working the dining room, Racquel who would take you to a table. No thank you. I walked in and even though there was not a sign, I waited to be seated. Racquel glanced over at me, but never made eye contact nor did she acknowledge me. I stood there for a few minutes to see if she would smile or wave at me or even look at me. Nothing. She had 2 tables and she was more concerned about them then she was about letting me know that she would be with me. I smiled at her twice...each time she walked by and I would have waited 5 minutes if she had just SMILED back at me. I read other reviews and I experienced the same apathy. It does not matter how good the food is because when people are paying to eat out, they want good service. I can attest the regulars at the bar had great service and so did I. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you are ignored within the first few minutes of walking in the door. Food: 4/5 Prices: 4/5 Pauline: 5/5 Racquel: 0/5

Hands down one of our favorite spots in Germantown. The food is good and the restaurant and bar are pretty chill. We started with the grilled chicken and yucca, omg!!!! It's a slice of heaven on earth. The chicken is well seasoned and grilled to perfection. The yucca fries are crispy on the outside and not too mushy on the inside. The sauce that is paired with it makes the dish For entrees, we ordered the combination platter fajitas and the tacos ( pork and shrimp). The waitress is extremely helpful. She is recommending not only what's good, but also the dish that is tasty and gives you the most for your money. Above all else, the food is fresh and made to order. The spicy salsa has a nice kick and the chips are so light Mmm mmmm good!!

I just wanted to send this to let you know my experience at LaMexicana in Germantown last Friday December 12th. I saw something black floating in my drink, and since it was dark I took a picture with my flash to see clearly. I've posted it here so you can see for yourself I am DISGUSTED that there were at least 5 FLIES in my beverage. I didn't notice at first, which means I drank some of this! I reported it to the bartender who offered absolutely NO apology, but simply poured the drink in the trash can. I can't tell you how appalled I am as you can imagine. Talk about DISGUSTING!!! Don't bother trying this out unless you want some unwanted protein :(

The one on Rockville is my regular spot but when in germantown I have to check out the original. Both locations got the best grilled tacos in my opinion. Some things I like better there then here but same nice and friendly family. I do prefer Rockville's fried ice cream over the germantown location and I also like that in germantown they cut up the shrimp. But both very tasty either way. Chicken fajitas on point as always. Can't really go wrong here from my experience over the years. Pretty consistent. One last note - it was a bit chilly in here and the owner quickly adjusted the thermostat and places a space heater near uS to warm us up, I tell you it's the little things that count the most. I appreciate it.

I give three stars for being a dive bar...I love dive bars and this place is one especially on a Friday evening. Great grilled tilapia heard the pork chops were something amazing maybe next time.

This place had some of the worst service I've ever had. They took forever to bring our drinks and food, then half of the food was wrong! To top it off, they over charged us because the waitress screwed up writing down our order. To add to this disaster, the food wasn't very good either. Never coming back again!

Having driven by this place dozens of times we decided to check it out finally. We walked in and sat ourselves since there was no sign to tell us otherwise. After 5 minutes and multiple glances from the only apparent worker we walked out. There were many tables and only 6 or so with guests. No one seemed to have any food. Probably won't be coming back.

Well last chance. Been to the one on shady grove and had I realized it was the same one I wouldn't have agreed to try this one. Luckily the only good thing was the bartender I had in Gaithersburg worked in Germantown today. First things first. Sat down and got a mouth full of fruit flies That's what made me decide against food. Had a pleasant time though having a few drinks until shift change. All I can say is if you go there ... Leave at five. The aura goes from light and laid back to stiff and unfriendly. First night bartender was ok. Regan I think her name is? But next girl (Tracy I think) needs to maybe take a break. She obviously doesn't like her job. Let me just say I like to go to bars to relieve stress and have a nice time not have it added on. No more la mex for me.

I have to confess: I went to this shopping center because I wanted to eat lunch at the Hard Times Cafe. However, that restaurant is now closed and I wanted something Tex-Mex-ish so I went here. Pros: Service was friendly and attentive. The chips and salsa were very good. On the other hand, it was 1:30 pm on a weekday and the place was pretty empty. I think one waitress was waiting on the entire restaurant-it's a small dining room. I ordered the shredded beef sunken burrito lunch platter and the beef wasn't shredded. It was chunked. If I wanted chunks I would have ordered fajitas. But it was more or less tender. That said, the burrito and the side garnish of lettuce, sour cream, and pico de Gallo tasted all right. Not fabulous but OK. I didn't get a bar drink, but from reading the other reviews, maybe I should have. The decor is sort of standard Tex-Mex with dimmed lights and sombreros hanging on the wall, except for the inexplicable mural of the back half of a naked woman surrounded by calla lilies (???) The sound level seemed nice for a dinner with good conversation (as opposed to the off-the-charts noise at Uncle Julios) Cons: the rice was minute rice. The black beans were too mushy and I didn't like the flavoring spices. The food came out way too fast to be freshly prepared; I suspect microwave. Conclusion: this is moderately tasty Tex Mex fast food with silverware, better dining ambience, and a bar. Expect no more. If you want a real step up in food quality (and price) Mi Rancho and Uncle Julio's Rio Grande Cafe are reasonably close (and so are Baja Fresh and Chipotle for that matter). I'm kind of at 2.5 stars on it but the waitress was so efficient and friendly I'm rounding up.

Went in with the husband for an early dinner and it was delicious! The shrimp limon appetizer was memorable and we both ordered lava rock grilled entrees. My husband ordered the salmon and it was prepared perfectly. Good margaritas, only $4 for happy hour and strong! The chips were delivered to our table warm and both the mild and hot salsas were tasty. To me all the food was good-quality Tex-Mex with lots of flavor. I'm from the southwest and having lots of Mexican & Tex-Mex food over the years I had all but given up on eating at Mexican restaurants in MD. I don't understand the average reviews I read, glad I trusted a friends recommendation and went to La Mexicana. Our server was very attentive and will be back for sure!

Omg! Worst worst experience! we walked in and the lady just looked at us and said sit were ever she didn't sit us down no menus no intro no nothing. After waiting 20 mins sitting and sitting like idiot while everyone around us had there drinks good and/or chips we had nothing I at least wanted chips but no the waitress walked passes is like 4-5 times and nothing never coming here again.

La Mexicana has FANTASTIC food. The chips and salsa that are delivered to your table upon arriving are delicious. The chips are usually warm and the salsa is made fresh in the kitchen and always tastes slightly different depending on who is back there making it that specific day. I've had about a dozen things on the menu, and nothing has ever disappointed. I highly recommend the strawberry margaritas which are amazing (and strong!). Also, I've never had to wait for a table, even during peak times, which is definitely a plus, and I have never felt rushed, even when my group has stayed for 2+ hours just talking. That being said, I would only recommend going there if you're in the mood for a long, relaxed meal and aren't in a hurry. While the servers are always friendly, the service can be incredibly slow. Sometimes it's just one person serving the entire dining room! The food always comes out quickly after you've ordered, but when I've gone with friends, we've waited up to 15 minutes to get our drinks and up to half an hour to get our check after we've finished eating. Sometimes it can be hard to catch our server's eye. They always seem to disappear after dropping off the food. Occasionally I've been given something similar to, but not exactly, what I ordered. Not a big deal, because I'm not a picky eater and everything is always delicious. All in all, the food is great and the atmosphere is relaxed, but if you're picky, looking to be waited on hand and foot, or in a hurry, then this is definitely not the place for you.

Run. Run away quickly in the opposite direction. The food was pretty bad. Everything tasted like it came out of a bag, bottle or can with a generic label and was thrown together without any additional effort. It is hard to make a bad quesadilla, but easy when the spinach tastes like it came straight from a can and tortilla shell tastes stale. The chips and salsa? Might as well go to Giant and blindly pick out the cheapest stuff you can find. The rest of our food (it was a group of 4) had that same distinct canned or badly frozen taste ... how do places like this exist? We went for dinner. The waitress wasn't that attentive (also didn't speak that much English, which is usually ok but for some reason communicating and finding her was extra hard). The night crowd was also a little sketchy, and most seemed to know each other and comfortably enjoy cursing loudly. This restaurant gave me a new perspective of Germantown and made me quickly swear to never ever venture out in that area at night again.

The grilled chicken and steak that they use for all of their food is amazing. The margaritas are excellent. The waitresses and chefs will even prepare the food however you want it, regardless of whats listed on the menu. We've only lived here for 3 months and we're becoming regulars.

Hmm... where do I start? Ok, so walking in to this place you see that there is a bar and a seating area. I sat down and was presented with some salsa and chips. The salsa taste like it was from a bottle and the chips tasted like they were from a bag. Not necessairly a bad thing since they both taste ok, but I would have liked a homemade salsa with more flavor. After going through the menu I ordered a steak burrito smoothered in enchilada sauce. This came with a side of beans, pico de gallo and rice. The rice was moist and creamy, which the beans were like any other but with a lille bit of a kick. The burrito was not smoothered in sauce instead there was a small layer of it with some baked on cheese. Inside was stuffed with real steak chunks cooked to a medium and sauted peppers and onions. The peppers and onions were still a bit on the raw side, but the steak was cooked perfecly and delicious. Overall, the best thing I had was the steak itself, but everything else was just ahhh. You can generally tell how good a tex mex place is just by the chips and salsa you get served upon entering and in this case, its just ah. Even after having said that I would rather go here than Mi Rancho.

Salsa and chips tasted like I could get them at Giant. I ordered shrimp fajitas and while there were numerous shrimp (the only plus), they were bland and swimming in oil. The shrimp themselves were overcooked and tasted as if they came from a pack of 'previously cooked, tail-on' frozen shrimp and then just heated up. To add insult to injury, I also think they were freezer burned - they had that super white frayed look to them (either that or they were thawed by being put in water?) Regardless, I waited quite a long time for my check with the owner walking right by me and ignoring me. While the server seemed nice enough, she wasn't very attentive.

Had a bad experience there. Went in on a Sunday during football season. 3 orders placed and only 1 came out correct. My friend ordered the salmon taco, she got shrimp. I ordered Chicken and Shrimp fajitas, I got only chicken. We told the waitress and she only said "I put it in right!" I never did get my shrimp for my fajitas and they just charged my friend for the shrimp taco, not the salmon taco. I'd avoid Sundays there. What's missing from the salsa is the vinegar, it's just tomatoes in there.

I too wish that I could award no stars for this terrible excuse for a restaurant. My boyfriend and I had errands to run in the same shopping center and decided to walk here for convenience. We should have walked right back out when we saw that there were only two tables in the entire restaurant with customers. The bar was full of what seemed to be regulars talking loudly and walking past us frequently to go to the restroom or outside to smoke. The chips and salsa were so-so, only okay because they were free. We both ordered vegetarian entrees (a burrito and enchiladas) and received them promptly. Upon tasting our food, we agreed that there was a distinct freezer burn taste to the vegetables. There were some very odd vegetables included for tex-mex cuisine (cauliflower, peas and carrots to name a few). Everything on the plate, except the garnish, tasted as if it had been frozen for years, even the rice. Nothing was seasoned, not even the canned salsa. Not since living in Germany have I had such terrible tex-mex, and I've never had such poor quality food served to me at a restaurant. I can say that our waiter was friendly and talkative, if not very attentive. We waited for almost 15 minutes to pay. We also overheard the diners behind us complaining about two wrong orders. La Mexicana would be better off serving their most loyal customers by turning the entire establishment into a bar.

I have been here 3 times with my wife. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. The food here is a really good. I am very surprised by the reviews of others. The price to quantity ratio is amazing. We love the hot salsa. We would definitely come back.

The food could certainly use a boost, but it is edible. Essentially this is a fast food restaurant with a bar.... and I'm OK with that. YOu go there more for the bar atmosphere. I wouldn't take a date here, but its pretty much the local CHEERS bar. Everyone knows each other and you know exactly what your getting. I'm not coming there for a 5 star meal, but for good casual times with friends.

My boyfriend and I walked in at 5:30 on a weeknight for dinner. There were plenty of people at the bar, but nobody at the tables. We waited for a while... standing there... looking around for an employee, but none approached us. The bar staff ignored us. A female employee walked out of the back area, looked at us, and then walked back in the back area and never came out again. Finally, we left and went a couple doors down to Hard Times, where we were greeted instantly with a smile and treated like valued customers.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
