Not too different from the larger chains serving similar products, but CalTort seems to have a bit larger, more diverse menu. Street parking in the area can be rough, especially on weekends. And on weekends, Bethesdites seem to love to take their kids here, making it seem like a bit of a zoo. The outside area is ample and dog-friendly. Assembly is fast, especially for togo orders. Will likely return.

Good quality and variety. Food is delicious and orders are prepared quickly. Typically clean and the staff is courteous. The amount of queso provided with chips isn't enough. And at times, it's consistency is too watery. Definitely use a burrito elite card if you intend on eating here regularly.

California tortilla is one of my favorite Mexican tortilla burrito restaurants. A wide assortment of hot sauces is fantastic, and they have a creative assortment of premade burritos to choose from. California screaming is my favorite. This particular California tortilla location is very consistent and I eat here quite often.

Well, this is my place! I remember how worried I was when I moved close to this California Tortilla (or Cal Tort, as we call it in my head). Dangerously accessible... Whenever I want a quick Mex-Fix, I stop in here. The staff is really fun and personable; Flo remembered my favorite order after my second visit! They also have special days where if you give a certain code word (which they provided by e-mail if you sign up for their aptly named Taco Talk newsletter) you can get free stuff like chips and queso or tacos. Just be prepared to break out of your comfort zone. Past code phrases include "Taxes Shmaxes" and "Man, it's cold!" The burritos are fresh and big and yum. I'm a personal fan of the Mesquite chicken. Their queso is also a guilty pleasure of mine. Put them together, and I'm a happy camper! Their Burrito Elito program is tops. Spend $50, get $5. Also, they give you a free burrito for your birthday, one which I've just redeemed. The only reason a fifth star is missing is because they can be inconsistent at times. I tend to get the same thing (creature of habit, I know) and I can order it 6 different times and it comes out 3 different ways. It can be hard to tell what the standard is. Bottom line: great Meximerican takeout place. Fun, funky, and affordable. Just get the card!

It used to be much better back when they had the smaller space,. Last time I ordered the chips and guacamole, the guacamole was a mixture of avocado & 40% diced tomatoes, it was awful.! some of the food has become very cheap in quality, even the rice and beans used to be a bigger portion and now you pay the same price and they give you less.

I used to come here all the time in high school (when it was located in a different spot on the same street) and I liked it back then, but I like it a lot better now. The menu has gotten a lot bigger! I had the taco combo (two tacos, a side, and a drink for about $8), which was a great deal. I got the mesquite grilled chicken tacos and a side salad. Everything was fresh and tasty and came out fast! I will be back more often!

2 1/2 stars. I have mixed feelings about this place. It's very close to my home, and always seems to have a decent amount of customers. It's probably because it's one of the few fast casual dining places around here--most everywhere else is sit-down restaurants. The food really isn't that good or cheap, and their menu is really confusing when you compare it to Chipotle. The food doesn't even compare to Chipotle. The weird sauce wall is unnecessary. Kudos for giving me a free burrito for my birthday since I had signed up for their frequent diner card. But, when I asked if I could add guac to it for free, the girl and her manager didn't know...when it came time to check out, the manager said that yes, I would indeed be charged, but it was too late to remove it because then I would lose my free burrito on my card, so I would have to pay the $.80. Obviously it was a matter of principle and not money, but it rubbed me the wrong way. I'm sure I'll eat here again just because it's quick and convenient, but those would be the only reasons. I'd much rather go to Smashburger across the street.

I headed into California Tortilla to kill an hour one day and grab some food. This was my second time to California Tortilla but my first time at this location, despite the proximity to my apartment. I ordered a regular burrito with blackened chicken and no beans ($6.89), a small chips and guac (about $2.50), and a fountain soda. The staff were friendly and set me up with a California Tortilla card. It was a bit busy, but I managed to find a nice booth to sit in. The food was ready pretty fast, and everything was really delicious. The burrito was big, and I was pretty full and happy when I left- with no complaints. You can also order ahead online for pickup, which I haven't tried, but seems very convenient. Their website also had a catering menu. I did notice that while they have free internet, I didn't see many outlets. Overall, two thumbs up!

Best Queso this side of the Mason Dixon line. I have literally come here just to order a large queso. Not sure what they add to their molten cheese to make it so tasty...perhaps some salsa? Even the salsa is delicious here. Having a super bowl party? Don't run to the the grocery store and mix velveeta and salsa, just come here instead and stock up. You get a large bag of chips too...seriously, a great deal! I have been to this location twice. Pretty fast and pretty clean. I love the soda dispensers...one of those with a kazillion choices from the makers of Coca-cola! Once was after a Yelp event at a spa down the street and tonight after throwing down $50 for sushi, drinks and tip with my sister AND still being hungry! LOL. So, we came down minutes before they closed. For $6.04 we ordered a kid's quesadilla with grilled chicken and scallions (only free item on the menu) which comes with a side of queso (YUM), chips, drink and 1/2 a brownie! Score! We munched on some chips, had something a little sweet and left satisfied. Seriously, they have over 40 varieties of hot sauces to choose from. My sister can eat wasabi plain and found something with jalapenos. I found my favorite fruity one (peach and vadilia onion) which is low on the scolville scale. Polite staff. I know they were still serving people after 9pm. :)

I came to this Cal Tor a while ago and got the "Southwestern Salad" ... as I usually do. But once I started to dig in- I realized that this piece of lettuce was bad.. then another piece... then another piece. Gross the whole salad was essentially rotten. So I go up and show the people at the line ( I'm not afraid to return food #heritage). And he makes me a brand new salad and apologizes. Turns out this salad is also jacked. I shouldn't have ordered the salad again. Silly me. But I thought maybe it was a one-off. No, the entire batch of lettuce they used was donezo. So I avoided this place for a while. Thinking that this Cal Tor had an issue with freshness. Well, when I saw that they had free wifi I had to give it another go. So I go, order my salad- bump into a few friends and sit down and eat. The salad was fresh fresh. Like fresher than I even remember. The lettuce was as crisp as a fall breeze. The tomatos (plum tomatoes) were cut smaller and had more flavor than usual. They still thinned out at the guac too much. That happened a long time ago. Along with the queso. They thinned the shiz out of that biz. I got the salad with the already cut up chicken ( the ones they put in the burritos). I think it's fresher cause they serve more burritos and tacos than they do salads. The chicken was fresh as Will Smith - Prince of Belair days. So... I had a great experience. Minus the obnoxious amount of children- ( which they don't have any control over). But because this place attracts so many children - the floor of the restaurant is like walking through a burrito bowl around lunch. After I ate my lunch with my friends, I tried to move to a place with an outlet for my computer... but I was so grossed out by the state of the floor that I left. Like it was capital "N" nasty. They really need someone dedicated to cleaning the restaurant around lunch time if that many children tend to come in. It's the price of having kid-friendly food. Gross kids who spill all their food on the floor. Yes, I know... their just kids. Doesn't make a floor full of rice beans and chicken any less gross- lo siento. Anyways, much better experience then I had las time. The food quality was much higher. I just think I'm gonna tailor my trips to only later at night.

The food is always good just like the service. Always friends and it's even to the point where I don't order anymore, they know me by name and order!! My only complaint is that the queso is never consistent. Sometimes it's nice and thick and then the other times it's super runny. Other than that I love it and get the burrito elite card! It is worth it!

One and a half stars. Rounding up since their spinach, avocado, and shredded lettuce are actually fresh. Maybe you can't really eat healthy at a California Tortilla and leave satisfied. You would think I'd be used to Mex chains offering borderline offensive rice, but mushy on top of bland is depressing. Mixed grill bowl was filling and at least the meats were still tender. Blackened fish was somewhat overcooked. I'd pick Chipotle over this any day.

  • Stephanie B.

Oh wow, eating here was an incredibly baaaad idea. If you don't mind chicken that was clearly boiled and mass produced elsewhere, maybe this is the place for you. I'd compare the quality of the super bland food to McDonald's, but that would be an insult to McDonald's, considering they own Chipotle. I ordered chicken fajitas. In my mind, I was envisioning Chili's fajitas. What I got was a sad, dismal failure. I'm a Californian. I've been eating mission style burritos in San Francisco (where the burrito was invented) at wonderful taquerias all my life. If you're looking for GOOD Mexican food, look elsewhere.

  • Alli H.

My favorite part about this place is the soda machine. It is so FREAKING COOL. You can like pick your type of soda and then pick any additional flavors that you may want to add to it. The food was also delicious. I was pretty happy. I like it better than Chipotle, but only because Chipotle is a national chain and I stay away from those. The tortilla also wasn't too spicy.

The food here is typical Cal Tort - really good. The delivery is awful, though. Multiple times (at least 3 I can think of off the top of my head) we have ordered online and gotten the confirmation email, only to never get our food. When we call, they tell us that the online orders don't always go through...then why have the online system? That is a major bug! And it's not like it has only occurred once, it's about every other time we order. Amazing idea in theory, but they are losing our business because it doesn't work. **Edit: Apparently, their online ordering system will back-date the delivery time on a order (by about 4 months), so it never gets to the store. There is no way for the ordering customer to do this, so it's a bug. However, when the manager talked to me, he implied that I must have done it. Sorry, pal, not even possible for me to do it if I wanted to!

I've been to this location a few times and it's always been good. Maybe not amazing, but I do prefer it to Chipotle or other fast Mexican places. I always go with the carnitas, either in a taco or a quesadilla. They kind of overdo the cheese in the quesadillas but the tacos are quite nice. They pile on the lettuce, but all Mexican places are guilty of this, in my experience. Probably the main reason I go here is for the chips and guacamole. They make excellent guac and the chips are decent. But again like all Mexican places, they're stingy with the guac and you always have to pay extra . But here it really is worth it because the guac is very good. The atmosphere is okay. Very young and hip, like it's trying hard to get your attention. It's loud during the lunch rush but that's to be expected at a joint like this. The music is dull Top 40 bs. Nothing special, nothing offensive. Overall this is a safe lunch stop if you work in the area. Not a place I rave to people about, but if you want good Mexican food and you're in the area, you probably will enjoy it. I like this place but I don't love it.

With all the restaurants in Bethesda, my kids still choose to go here EVERY WEEK. We have class around the corner, and they beg for Cal Tort - even though I am quite sick of it after 3 years of once-weekly classes. The soda machine is, indeed, awesome. They love to mix flavors into their sodas. And the kids meals all come with a brownie and free drink - plus chips and cheese with the cheese quesadilla. My cheese-loving 10-year-old can't get enough. We've never had problems with cleanliness, poor service or order mix-ups. It's been fast and accurate every single time. After 3 years, that's saying something. Yes, it's a chain - and no, it's not Chipotle. But it's reasonably good, inexpensive, fast food.

Pretty good food but i appreciate the service even more, super nice people. Alex brought my dog a water bowl outside without even asking, it was very sweet. Also great selection of hot sauce!

I dont love California Tortilla -- but I dont hate it either. For several years now I've had one of their locations within 5-10 minutes of wherever I happen to be living. Most recently they are less than 1/2 a block away. I dont go out of my way to eat here, but I dont go out of my way to avoid it either. My favorite thing on the menu is the chips and Queso. Sometimes i just get that. Their tacos are also good... and so are their salads/bowls. The burritos themselves are too big for my taste. The few times I've had them I feel like i need a nap after i'm done eating. The big wall of hot sauce is a neat feature each restaurant has. Easy to taste new things and try new spicy concoctions.

It has the impression of being affordable and friendly, it is not, and the quality of the food has diminished drastically. The pre-boxed salad greens are wilted and not washed properly and my stomach turned bad. The fried chicken pieces are burned, always. Nothing special, just like a large franchise food chain, with lots of kids after sporting events. And, on the day they marketed free chips and dip if the weather turned -10 degrees wind chill, they tried to contest the temperature at the register. Not going back.

3.5 stars. I love that they will give you a burrito you can't get anywhere else, with much more than your standard meat, rice, beans, etc. And there's a bunch of hot sauces available to go for. I've tried the havana, which comes with grilled chicken, black beans, Havana sauce (whatever that is), rice, lettuce, and salsa. I've also gone with the california screamin, which has chicken, grilled peppers, onions, hot sauce, queso sauce, and salsa. Both were tasty. I especially liked the screamin, which had a nice kick. This is fast food tex mex (cal mex?) that will fill you up and leave you satisfied. It won't blow you away, though - it is still fast food, and I've been spoiled enough by fast food mexican joints with super fresh, blow your mind delicious tortillas to be a bit disappointed by the ones here. Not that they're bad, just not great. Worth a visit.

Husband: "Best burrito ever" Me: "From California Tortilla? What, really?" This exchange actually happened whilst my husband devoured a ginormous fajita burrito (that I got for free on opening day of the new Bethesda digs - thanks CT!). As self proclaimed Mexican food snobs, we don't normally tex mex it. So you can imagine my surprise when the words "this may be the best burrito I have ever had" were spoken over this meal. I used to come here a lot for lunch when I was fatter and went out for leisurely lunches instead of doing what my office paid me for....some crazy thing called work. So I can vouch that many of their burrito concoctions are quite tasty, I have always preferred this place over Chipotle.

The food is good, and the service is very friendly. I highly recommend California Tortilla.

The "no meat-o" burrito is the best vegetarian option, centered on a heavy dose of freshly grilled vegetables. It's a bigger variety of vegetables than say Chipotle's fajita vegetables, and fresher and crisper. The grilled zucchini really adds. Outdoor seating is a plus, especially on a good people-watching corner like this one. The wall o' hot sauce is pretty terrific - tomato-based sauces are great but it's nice to mix it up with say a mustard-based sauce or any of the several dozen varieties they stock.

Oh Cal Tor, (NOT Cal TORT), how you've faded from glory. You'd be much better if there was anything on your menu as good as the blackened chicken caesar burrito, but sadly, there's not. It's my go-to and will remain so. Love the wall of sauce though. And fresh limes go a long way.

  • Paul D.

This is basically California style Mexican fast food. Really tasty and generously sized burrito especially for the price. To make it fun they have a rack of maybe a hundred different hot sauces to try. Guacamole was very good too, with nice chunks of avocado. Chips could have been better. They were served room temp with not enough salt, in my opinion. The restaurant feels new and has outdoor dining with a good view of local street action. Overall It was a satisfying meal.

It's a typical California Tortilla, a basic 3 star rating. It's comparable to the other CalTor locations I've been to. The soda machine is pretty cool; there were flavors of sodas that I didn't even know existed. My favorite dish so far as been the enchilada bowl, but I'm still exploring the menu. The selection of hot sauces is also pretty nice; I wonder how often they are changed. It is a chain, so I can't complain about authenticity. The extra star is for Flo. She is an AMAZING cashier! I've been here maybe 3 times in the last month and a half (really not often) and she knows my name. She smiles with every customer I have seen her interact with, even during the busy times, and made a pretty good suggestion my first time coming in. That extra bit of customer service really makes a difference.

I love California Tortilla. My favorite item is the Southwestern Salad with blackened chicken and salsa for the dressing. This location is especially nice because when I ask for salsa they give me like 3 containers. My other favorite is the blackened chicken tacos. Yum. Get some guacamole and salsa on them and you will be a happy camper. I tried the Caribbean mango salad the other day and it was quite good. If you are in the mood for sweet/savory, I'd recommend it.

Meh I was hungry and I'd already paid. It's sad to say that Taco Bell has more flavor. I got a taco beef classic burrito with guac and what was supposed to be fresh jalapeños which I'm sure where fresh when they were canned. The meat was flavorless like the guac. Thank god the jalapeño had some sort of the flavor. The chips were good, crispy and lightly salted. Their queso is basically Velvta and Rotelo. I even got a fish taco to try and after two bites I tapped out. The toppings were good but the fish was very fishy. Props for easy online ordering and pickup, having one of those bazillion flavor coke machines and for having a Capitol bike share out front (if you're one of those active folks).

Good food at a great price. Feeling generous tonight so the 3.5 star rating was rounded up. The specialty quesadilla is the way to go; filling and tasty.

This place ruined an hour of my life, DO NOT order the Korean BBQ burrito. It tastes like purina dog food soaked in hot sauce. The employees...I wasn't impressed. I wanted to ask them "am I going to get food poisoning" just watching him make it. I should have stuck with the chicken burrito, but I had to be adventurous. horrible all over.

I love the new location so much that I'm swinging by to write a review. This is probably currently my favorite lunch spot in Bethesda. The price is right, the food is very tasty and always well prepared considering it is essentially fast food, and they do have some reasonably healthy options. The decor is modern and fun, just the right amount of quirky for me and the location is spacious. There's free wifi which is awesome. Most importantly though, the employees are all extremely upbeat and friendly. I am always astounded when I go in there at the exceptionally high level of customer service and general friendliness of their workers. It truly puts me in a great mood. They really are eager to help you. I've never had a bad experience here. Dinging it a star because it can be VERY noisy (like truly, obnoxiously so) and because the service can be a bit slow considering it's fast food. However, I think that's mostly because they are so busy, so in a way that's a tribute to them and how successful they're becoming.

  • Nicole G.

The building is really spacious, especially the outdoor seating which is great. I went for lunch one day and got the taco combo. Tasty food for a decent price. I just wish the chips were tastier. The wall of hot sauces makes up for it a bit though and free wi-fi is a definite bonus!

Yesterday, I stopped by for a quick lunch. it was late and I ordered a Quesadilla which was nicely prepared, cost only $5 and I didn't have to wait long for it. I had not been here in more than a year but remembered it was always a nice upbeat place with friendly staff. I enjoyed the lunch but would have enjoyed it much more if the cleaning guy hadn't decided to spend what seemed like 20 minutes (most of the time I was in there) excessively vacuuming the two small rugs (matts) in the store. So it was a very noisy lunch indeed. BTW, they are moving to a new location across the street in about a week from now.

Sorry. I don't know why it took me so long to say this but I am over you cal tor. I really am. I always go back and think "this time will be better" it won't. My main problem is the food use to be so much better. It used to be a great local chain that had a different take on burritos. Recently, I got blacked chicken taco and a veggie taco. It just tasted like salt. Not seasoned, just salt. It was horrible. Then the veggie taco was large chunks of zucchini which I was not expecting in a taco. I get it the whole trying to be different but cut down the zucchini and grill it. Don't boil it. Needless to say it was gross. A month before that got a burrito and the rice wasn't fully cooked. Stupid me though oh it's an "off day" apparently every day is an "off day". The wall of sauces looks gross as if no one cleans it. I'm pretty sure no one does. I don't trust it. I get emails for free tacos. Now, I wouldn't eat them if you gave them to me for free. I am so done with you cal tor.

Unfortunately I am not a big fan of their burritos. People will disagree with me, but compared to Chipotle, I'd rather go there for a burrito. HOWEVER, I LOVE their nachos and their tacos. I go there again and again for some quality nachos :)

  • Seth S.

California Tortilla is so much better than Chipotle. They have a number of different burritos to choose from as well as other options (tacos, quesadillas, etc) and all of their sauces and ingredients are made fresh daily. They have a wall of hot sauces that are mostly delicious. I've definitely grown a bit more accustomed to the heat, so the sauces I like these days have changed accordingly. Apply cautiously at first though. Some of them pack a surprising punch. My two favorite things to get are the Specialdilla - blackened chicken, spinach, black beans, and cheese- and the Honey Lime Burrito. Both are delicious every time. The employees are still spunky but I do miss the "Welcome, welcome, welcome" guy. He was a fixture there throughout high school, when it first opened. The newsletter, Taco Talk, is always worth a gander too. It's gotten a tad less quirky lately and a little more informative about goings on in the franchise (maybe Pam is just running out of topics?) but either way it's a good read.

California Tortilla also know as CalTor, CT, or CaliT, has been my favorite fast food restaurant for over 15 years now. I love California Tortilla's unique food combinations it's not like Chipolte or Baja Fresh it's an animal of its own! CaliT has grown and expanded based on word of mouth, spunky publicity, and great food! Pam and Alan the owners are still a visible presence in the original Bethesda location since upending in 1995. (They're also on the soda cups if you want to check them out!) I come back time after time for the Crunchy BBQ Ranch Burrito. There's something about it that's just magical. Chips and guacamole are amazing as well as is the queso. What I really love is that CaliT is still the same small business they started as and hasn't taken on the big industrial look that many small businesses that make it big do. Bethesda loves California Tortilla! California Tortilla is unique! Each month I look forward to the spunky Burritio Elito newsletter they email out as well as they have available in the restaurants. From the beginning there's been Monday Night Mystery Prize Burrito Wheel night which I admit in high school started me coming in. They have fun promotional days like Pop-Tart day, Popsicle day, Freeze Pop Day, and Shark Week hat day (I was so proud to wear my shark week hat around that week even at work I made people jealous!). And if with all of their awesome promotions that doesn't excite you this will, they have the super cool 100 flavor Coca-Cola machine for fountain drinks. Seriously!! CaliT also does catering as they catered my work lunch this past week inspiring me to yelp about them. I hope you make a visit and judge for yourself to see why this has been my favorite place to eat for over 15 years!!

I reviewed the Rockville CalTort a few months ago and what I said about that one really applies here too, so quoting it suffices: First of all, I don't compare this place to Chipotle. They're two places that have very little in common except that they serve things that both call "burritos." But at Chipotle you choose a meat (or if you want, vegetarian) and mild, medium, or hot sauce, and you pretty much get a limited selection of flavors. At CalTort, it's mostly specialty combinations like the Thai Chicken Burrito. The seasoning is decidedly un-Mexican, but I like them. They have dozens of hot sauces you can add, but I've never tried any, not because I don't like hot 'n' spicy (I LOVE hot 'n' spicy, and at Chipotle I always order the hottest sauce!) but because I want to taste the specialty flavorings, and I fear the hot sauces would dominate them. So I always get a specialty burrito and rely on the seasoning they use.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. This visit occurred on 11/21 Got free Burrito for my bday...went in to redeem and got the California Screaming Burrito for myself. Went to car and ate it but hubby devoured half of it even though his plan was to make a burger for himself when he got home. It had a nice spiciness to it and overall it was pretty yummy in spite of the rice seeming a bit on the dry side. Daughter got a kids meal with the chicken burrito, nice portion, good flavor comes with chips and queso, a brownie and a drink for just $4.99! Daughter 2 sees Daughter 1's meal and takes a bite and decides she wants a meal too. I go back inside get the meal along with a large soda (I wanna play with the machine). I got a mix of sodas and my drink consisted of cherry, strawberry, lime and fruit punch flavored Fanta. Yummy concoction...patting self on back. I also got a chance to spin the wheel and won a free cookie. The cookie wasn't great, very mediocre, they can do better. I didn't finish it. Overall enjoyed the food and will certainly be back more often because of the kids meals and the soda fountain and I guess it would be nice to try the gyro burrito too. The only reason why I didn't give 3.5 or 4 stars is because the floor behind the counter was filthy, filthy, filthy and in plain site of the customer at the pick up area. Clean up folks, we can see that! Will update when I visit again and hopefully the floor will be clean.

I love this Cal Tor! This is a new location, so everything is new and the place looks super clean. Their queso is so delicious and I also love their blackened chicken salad. The wall of hot sauce is cool and unique, and it gives you something to do while waiting for your food. The staff at this location are really friendly and make the food fast. Great quick and cheap weeknight meal option.

Good option for quick service food. I give the service 5 stars and the food 3 stars. There is a hot sauce bar that we enjoyed as we love our food extra spicy. We watched them cooking raw chicken breasts on the grill so you know that they are freshly made. The carnitas were yummy and not fatty like you sometimes find.

I'm a burrito fan. and I really love @CalTort for a dozen reasons. Because they have a wide variety of different choices on the menu. I think their food is good quality. It just taste good. I am also very impressed with the Wall of Hot Sauce. I don't like real HOT HOT sauce but they have many different kinds to chose from and they have them labeled very clearly by Scoville heat units which I think is helpful. Excellent value for my money. and I haven't even mentioned the staff yet! Excellent customer service! Very friendly staff. Everyone behind the counter is very friendly, courteous, and helpful. and a big thank you to Alan! Always good chatting with him. I also can't forget to mention the Burrito Elito deal. Super Awesome! "Monday Night Mystery Prize Burrito Wheel" Double Super Awesome! Bottom line is If I could give it more stars I totally would.

Went for the grand opening after hearing about the free burritos. The new place is great! Huge space with indoor and outdoor seating. Service was quick even with the long line of people waiting. Looking forward to go again!

I try to eat here every time i get to Bethesda as I love small local places and this is one place that always serves excellent food and its fresh and made to order . I rolled in with Les who had Carnita Combo and I had Blackened Chicken quesadilla . We added chips with queso and salsa .. Excellent .. Fresh and hot It was Les' first time there and is a big critic when it comes to certain foods and Mexican is one . It got a two thumbs up !!! Nice little place . Very fast .. Nice staff and the orders have always been prepared right ...They have sooooooo many different hot sauces for you to try . I have to say that their own house brand has a great flavor and i purchased a bottle to bring home . OH yeah ,they even have the new Coke Machine that has all the flavor choices for Coca Cola Products !!!

This place is quick and the prices are good. The venue is nothing fancy. There is lots of variety of what you can order. And they have a lot of hot sauces to choose from. I like the buffalo chicken burrito. Definitely something unique. Portions are large. The nachos are good here. And it is locally owned, which is nice.

Ordered a veggie burrito and got chicken in there. Blech blerg blorg. An honest mistake but that wasn't fun. 2 stars not 1 because I usually like "CalTort".

I almost want to give this place one star but I won't. I have been going here (less and less) for 15 years. The quality has gone down hill. I do think their new across the street store is way nicer, but the food is just not nearly as good anymore. Save yourself 10$ and go to Chipotle which is only a few blocks away.

  • Geoffrey R.

Great spot all in-all. I love how the original owners are usually there ringing up customers and handing out orders. They're moving across the street to a new location and I'm looking forward to going there as well. One of my favorite spots for lunch in Bethesda!

  • Alexa G.

They have a new location which is way bigger and better. The prices are reasonable and the staff is nice. ONE thing that I don't like is that they don't cook the chicken long enough. It's barley well done. I stick to chips&queso with a spinach quesadilla.

Cal Tor is the only rival to Chipotle in the burrito world, in my opinion. The main reasons for this (Chipotle is the high standard) are the amazing options you have for burrito customization, and the wall of hot sauce. The service here is also, without a doubt, some of the best I've experienced... and it's a fast food place! Also the Honey Lime sauce is a national treasure. I've been coming here since I was 15 years old and they've consistently served up bangin' food with a great attitude.

Had a great time at California Tortilla today with the kids. It's a solid place to get a quick lunch. Nothing fancy, but good. It'll be interesting to see the new space when it opens up soon. Good luck

These burritos are delicious - the best in DC by far. The staff is very friendly, and California Tortilla is not skimpy about providing substantial discounts and promotions. I've been visiting Cordell Ave's California Tortilla location for more than 10 years. Good burritos, frequent discounts/promotions, free hot sauce, and friendly staff. That's always been enough to keep me coming back.

I was not going to write a review for this, considering there were 40+ of them, but I realized that pretty much all of them are just talking about the burritos. First let me say, Mexican is 1B of my favorite food genres, 1A being Italian. So, I am a professional Mexican food taster, if you will. The burritos at Cal Tort are not that good in my "professional" opinion. All of that wacky stuff they throw in there just makes it less than desirable for me. Why did I give this place 4 stars then? Well, there is more on the menu than burritos. Their mesquite chicken quesadillas are some of the best 'dillas I've ever tasted. The tacos, salads, and nacho spreads are pretty darn good too. Lastly, the hot sauce selection cannot be matched. To sweeten the deal they have various gimmicks to lighten the load on my wallet, most noticeably the "Burrito Elito" card that gives me 5$ (about a free menu item) every 50 points I rack up. It isn't fantastic, but what does Chipotle give you? Nothing. They also have the spinny wheel they do, which has some great deals on it too. I think that is on Tuesday nights though and I am only a Bethesedian (Bethesder?) by day. The owners often frequent this place because it is the original Cal Tort, which has now spread fairly well along the East Coast. Nothing like a local business doing well, amiright?

Went here for lunch with a coworker today. I really liked it. I love burritos so I was pleasantly surprised that this was close to me. Let me start off by saying the service was very quick and efficient. I think I got my burrito 3 minutes after I ordered. I got the California Screaming burrito and it was very good. I LOVE LOVE LOVEd the hot sauce choices. Reminded me of one of my favorite places to eat, Firehouse Subs. Overall, I think this is a great place to come to for a burriot. I'd rather go here than Chipotle, but would still go to Qdoba than here (disclaimer: I'm a Qdoba junkie).

Yes, I know, California Tortilla is easy and on occasion, yummy. BUT, my advice is NOT to order for delivery. My family and I have waited more than 2 hours (defeats the purpose of delivery) various times and then are greeted with crabby delivery people and unresponsive managers. There are so many great places to eat in Bethesda...I say spend your money elsewhere. The customer is NOT the focus here....

In order for me to really explain my experience here, I have to give a bit of a background story. Today has not been the greatest day. I woke up and realized that I was late and threw on some clothes. My office has a very relaxed dress code and so it was fine that I came in in jeans and a t-shirt and a random sweater. All morning, I was typing away at my computer and this lead me to tie my not that long hair back in a pony tail. Whatever, it keeps my hair out of my face. I didn't look that cute. My office is so dead today -- people are sick or just plain off. So it's a bit of a depressing day. And then, my mother canceled our lunch date... BLA! When lunch time rolled around, I thought that I should just go and chill out. I chose California Tortilla because I had heard so much about it but had actually never been there. I walked in, feeling grungy and tired and a bit irritated, and was greeted in a friendly, happy way, that made me think that there was something wrong with the person. In my own mind I was thinking "this person is either slow or blind, because I'm not the type of person that you want to be friendly to right now." I'm a mean person, yes... But no, this guys really just wanted to be nice to me. I ordered a Gyro Burrito (it sounded interesting) and stood there waiting. I checked out the many choices of hot sauces there and thought if I had the guts to try any of them out. I didn't. I waited and order after order was called up... all except mine. I grew irritated again. After my horribly long wait of 5min, the man behind the counter looked at me and asked if the Gyro was mine. "Yes" i answered in a bit of a mean voice (I'm apologize) and he told me that it would be the next one out. When it was finished, a minute later, the man looked at me, smiled and said "do you like cheese?" "Yes???" I answered. He gave me some Queso and chips for free because I had to endure my horribly long 6min wait. I probably also looked like I could use a pick-me-up. Long story short, the people at California Tortilla were nice to me. I really didn't deserve it, and they were nice to me. On top of that, the food that they served me was good. I would say that burrito is a small step above Chipotle and the queso is fantastic.

I'm a fan of CT. Decently good food at reasonable prices with friendly service. What else do you want from a fast food place? Maybe some super delish tortilla chips? Well, they've got those, too. Plus, if you get on their email mailing list, you'll get funny email newsletters from the owner, as well as updates regarding specials (the famous Pop Tart Day, for example) and burritos of the month. Plus, California Tortilla supports the traditions on which the very foundation of this great nation is built: every Election day, CT offers specials to each customer who comes in sporting a trendy "I Voted" sticker. How patriotic is that?

    (4)
  • Becky T.

It's like Chipotle except with a wall of hot sauce. They have interesting ombinations like the aforementioned Chicken Caesar or Thai burritos, so it's not like they are going for an authentic Mexican taste. I would say that they're more like sandwich wraps than burritos. Bottom line: tt's a crappy burrito but a decent wrap!

  • Gordon K.

Ahhhh, CalTor. Back when you got free burritos on Wednesdays if you had a shirt, this place was too good. Then, around came the competition. I haven't been back in years, but I'm sure the burritos are still fine. And at least they've got hot sauces other than Tabasco. But it could be much better.

    (3)
  • Deidre D.

I've been twice and am just not happy with it. Even the small burritos are too large and no amount of gimmicky variety can mask a mediocre product. I've tried the bbq burrito and the honey lime and while neither was bad, per se, neither was in any way remarkable or worth a repeat. I had some coupons the first time that were not honored and so when I returned home and checked the receipt, I found I had not only been overcharged, but actually double-charged for some items! I thought the place was just pricey but instead they're actually negligent. I gave them another shot on a friend's request but the only things that impressed me were the hot sauce selection (I like Green and Horny best) and the how quickly the queso will clog my arteries (doesn't mean I don't like it). But that's the thing - if what I like best on the whole menu is a sauce they don't make a fake cheese product for dipping chips, I don't think this is a place I really want to spend my money.

This is a popular spot in Bethesda (especially considering its lack of available parking nearby) for a good reason--it's cheap and it's tasty. The place is swarmed with high school kids after 3, then the young families wander in and then the hip crowd who either used to eat here after school, or know it for a reliable bite. It's got burritos, quesadillas and all the normal Mexican fare, but it also boasts salads and some creative burrito flavors. The chips and queso are the best. The owners put out a newsletter every season (as I recall) that really gives Cal Tor the local feel I think pushes it over the top.

Burritos are well-sized with unique flavors, but, as previously stated... I'd rather go to Chipotle.

  • IH K.

I assume that Cal Tor menu items taste the same wherever you go, since it comes from a bag, right? So this review is mostly for the location. I like the Bethesda branch because it's quick/friendly service and the outdoor areas remain semi-private even on warm days. It lack's the cafeteria style feel that most cal tors take on. So, it's not real Mexican - so it's not the best thing you'll ever eat. But when comparing Cal Tor's to each other, it's got the rest beat.

    (4)
  • Chris B.

so i know chipotle and baja fresh aren't 'authentic' Mexican, but what is. at least i feel they can be in the realm of Mexican cuisine and be categorized as a burrito. i don't really feel this is the case with cal tor. it is all kinds of random flavors from Thai to Cesar that just happen to be rolled into a tortilla. while the meat is high end for a casual place like cal tor it lacks direction. the food is decent enough and i guess the wall of hot sauce is cool but sometimes a good salsa is more important. its not bad its not great. i still feel more people like it because they think they are eating healthier. but if it tickles your fancy go for it.

    (3)
  • Tony W.

Authentic? Absolutely not. Fine dining? Nope. But quick, reasonably priced burritos with friendly service? Yup. Okay, so the fish tacos here aren't anything like the ones you'd find at Moondoggies in PB. But they're okay. And in a town where people say, ewwww, fish tacos when you say you like them, that will have to do.

Downhome and fresh. Friendly and accommodating staff. Inexpensive but healthy. I usually order two soft tacos, each with a different protein. Add a little salsa and even a pour of their own California Tortilla hot sauce (which is really decent; they also have many, many others to choose from and even purchase). The chili is good too as are the salads--and they'll make little substitutions or leave some things out if you like. They create special burritos every week and often have fun promotions like free chips and salsa if you voted or free pop tart day or other offbeat promotions. If you don't like those kinds of things, still go--you'll like it. Have had catering from there as well and it's yummy. They have a great Burrito Elito card (where if you want you earn a point for every dollar spent; once you hit 50 you get $5 credit and sometimes they offer double value; don't let this turn you off if you don't like this type of thing) and a spin-to-win wheel for fun where you can garner discounts or free food. It's just an easy place to be with good food and service. In Bethesda they now have curbside pick-up and delivery as well. The Bethesda location is my favorite out of the locations in Rockville, Penn Quarter, and Cleveland park.

California Tortilla = TURBO DIESEL. I have sworn by this statement since the very nickname crossed my mind. There is nothing like a packed, flavorful burrito accompanied by some chips and salsa (or chips and queso for you gluttons out there!) as the right lunch fuel during a regular day in the office. From the moment you walk in, you know you're in for something special. First of all, there's the music - I would pay for XM or Siruis if I knew that one of the stations would be the California Tortilla channel. I feel like I've stepped into an 80's alternative universe! It's not every day I get to hear Men at Work, Big Country, The Fixx, New Order, and other awesome tunes as I prepare to indulge in burrito-y awesomeness. Then there are the employees. Their corporate folks aren't kidding when they say "spunky." I have always had a pleasant experience working with the folks at the register - as they are perky, friendly, and make you leave the transaction with a smile on your face. There is heavy traffic for lunch and/or dinner (which I'm sure is similar at all other locations, especially in Chinatown before a game at the Verizon Center!), but the burrito-masters have it down to a swift, sweet science. Then of course there is Pam, whose fresh lively prose can be found in my e-mail inbox at least once a month for her Taco Talk enewsletter. The C.E.O. of California Tortilla packs into her monthly rhetoric some quick humor about running the business, and tells us loyal "subscribers" all about the special things going on at California Tortilla each month - whether it's specials, celebrations (which usual involve specials!), or great deals and new menu items. That is one of the great things about California Tortilla - you can always manage to find some sort of special break. Whether it's the weekly offers (including the bonus wheel you spin on Monday's), or the seasonal treats (free chili, March Madness specials, free Pop-Tarts(?!?!?)) - there's always something that makes you want to come in for lunch/dinner/snack-time/happy hour. The only catch might be that you'll have to cluck or quack at the register to get in on the action...I'm not kidding. Also, there's the Burrito Elito card, which is a brilliant concept by their marketing folks. With each purchase you make, the dollar amounts are translated into points on your card. Once you reach certain point milestones, you'll get discounts on your purchases - not too shabby! A more attractive policy than a lot of places' "Buy 23 burritos get the 24th free" type deal/joke. Oh yeah, then there's the food itself. I guess it is best to compare it to the McWorld burrito spot, Chipotle. First of all, California Tortilla offers their burritos in sizes - so instead of being dominated by a large burrito, you can grab yourself a smaller one and some chips and salsa for a more balanced, less food-coma induced experience. Second, California Tortilla has a myriad of burrito varieties (Buffalo Chicken, BBQ-Ranch, Caribbean Jerk, etc.) unlike Chipotle's whatever's-in-front-of-you options AND the huge walls and shelves of sauces (can't go wrong with Gator Sauce, especially if you're timid when it comes to things like this). The food quality is fresh and "darn tasty" as Pam would say. There are so many options that I am confident you will find something that fits your mood - whether it's burritos, tacos, salads, bowls, quesedillas, you name it! My only issue is I find the salsa to have a very strange consistency - pasty yet watery. Still the flavors of the salsa blend perfectly, and has that authentic pickled hint that I love in a salsa. If you're going to check it out this month - go on a Wednesday! As part of March Madness, they have a mini hoop set up right in front of you. If you make a basket (which is insanely easy), you get free chips and queso (or salsa for me)! If you miss, you still get $1 off your next purchase there. Why do I know this? Not only from the last issue of Taco Talk...but I'm 1 for 2. :-\

If you've had Chipotle, you will never taste a good burrito at a fast-food restaurant again ... unless you go back to Chipotle. If you get a burrito here, you will most likely think, "ehhhhhhhh.. I've had better ..... at Chipotle". Chips and queso make a great snack though. Salads are probably the better bet for you if you're into that. Tacos are okay, but Chipotle ..... you get the point. But on an other note, this one seems to be family-operated. The men work at the food bar, preparing the orders while the women stand at the cashier without a care in the world for you.

Chips and queso are mucho gusto. Burritos are great but I can never finish the large ones. Got to love the hot sauce wall! Tip: Don't try Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce. It will burn when you poop.

Cal Tor is a locals-only burrito joint. The folks that say they prefer Chipotle would rather (1) not have very many options or interesting flavors, (2) not support hometown business and quirkyness, and (3) have no QUESO! Been going to the Bethesda flagship one since it opened and nothing compares. PLEASE OPEN CAL TOR IN MANHATTAN! (also, and I agree with what someone wrote before, why do the owners think it goes by "Cal Tort"? I've never heard anyone say anything other than "Cal Tor")

I first came to this quirky little burrito place when i bartended up the street from the Bethesda location. Immediately upon entering this establishment you know something is going to be different. The walls and tables are all painted in loud (yet fun) colors. There is a large spinning wheel that on certain nights you get to "play" and possibly win free food, drink, or desserts just because. The food itself is very good and very nicely priced. It will run you about $8 for a monstrous burrito (of every imaginable type), cheese con queso, chips and a medium drink. My favorite burrito has to be the BBQ ranch. I find the food has some extra zing over Chipotle and Baja Fresh. Plus they have fun additions like "Taco Talk", a short monthly newsletter that lets the customer know of any new burritos that will be tried out, freebies, and other antics from the owner. (yes, they have a "free pop tart day" just because who doesn't like a pop tart). This location specifically has some tough to find parking. However a parking garage about a block and a half away is usually open, but expect to pay the hefty Bethesda parking rates. It is also just a 4 block walk from the Bethesda Metro station.

Honestly this place doesn't do anything for me at all; I'll take Chipotle or even Baja Fresh over this any day, if it's "burrito chain" that I'm after. The hot sauce wall is cute & all but the food is just sorta... meh. I do remember the chips being pretty good, and the staff was friendly enough, especially considering they have to work in that headache inducing decor all day.

I went to "CalTor" a couple of times in high school. The experience is fun, but I don't remember the food. I remember Chipotle a lot more. It's a fun place to go with some friends, but if you actually live in California like I do then it looks like child's play.

  • Tom D.

I went here with modest hopes that I would be able to get a decent burrito -- I know I am not going to replicate the experience of Tacos Moreno in Santa Cruz -- or a Taqueria Cancun, Pancho Villa or Vallarta in San Francisco. Is the best Mexican food in DC a toss up between Lariol Plaza or Chipotle? Seriously.... OK -- so the rice and beans tasted of absolutely nothing -- no taste -- perhaps the most tasteless thing I have ever had. The burrito? Taste was completely dominated by vinegar -- it was the first bad burrito I have ever had. Even a not so good burrito is ok -- but this was plain bad. The wall of heat is cute, but I didn't come for condiments.

I am partial to this caltor because I have been going here since I couldn't even drive and had to beg rides during lunch hour from older friends. Now that I live in california, in the mission no less, the burrito seems not quite as amazing... But I have to give it five stars anyway because I have eaten so many, it would be cheating or something not to. I almost always get the chicken caesar made veg, and its yum. The best part is the wall of hot sauces, the bonus burrito card and the guy that yells "welcome welcome welcome" when you walk through the door.

  • Alexis G.

I have a feeling the Cal Tort brand has a fairly strong following, because I just found out they have a newsletter called "Taco Talk." Cal Tort is all about variety. Their wall of sauces is intimidating, but step right up there and go wild. I like to choose the hottest sauce possible, so that when I purse my lips together, tears start to form in my eyeballs. It's wonderful. Cal Tort is definitely casual dining, with brightly-colored decor and cafeteria-style booths and tables. They give you a scratch-off card with your purchase, so after awhile you can get a free burrito. They also play games sometimes. I saw a guy win a burrito once because he knew the name and artist of the song playing on the overhead speakers. Now that's what I call service. Most people get the burritos here, because there is a choice of 10. All burritos can be made for vegetarians/vegans. You can get a quesadilla here, too, but their "claim to fame" is definitely the burrito.

  • John W.

This is ground zero of the growing CalTort empire, and the burritos are tasty, tasty, tasty. Authentic Mexican cuisine? No way. But again: tasty, tasty, tasty. Their blackened chicken caesar burrito is my favorite speciality burrito, and apparently I'm not alone there--they say it's their biggest seller. While I'm usually loathe to give out my email address, I haven't regretted joining their mailing list. The newsletters are a good laugh, and there's often some great specials sent to the list (the secret word to get free stuff on nasty weather days are my favorite promotions). I'd have included a spiffy photo of their burritos, but the last time I went into a CalTort with my camera (this was at the Rockville Pike location) I was told no photos allowed. Hurumph. Can't bring myself to ding a star for it, but no free publicity photography for them.

My first job in college was down the street from Cal Tort. I first heard about this restaurant during my orientation, when my boss casually mentioned that the staff pretty much got burritos from Cal Tort for lunch every day. There was no way that my internship stipend was going to cover a burrito every day for lunch, but I did eat there quite a bit that summer, and usually got the blackened chicken caesar burrito. These are by no means your basic traditional burrito, but their funky combinations somehow always taste good and are even somewhat authentic. Whenever I'm back in town these days, this is the first place I go. It's really not hard now that there is a Cal Tort just about everywhere in the DC area, including the airports. With all the fantastic burrito places in San Francisco, I almost hate to say it, but I wish Cal Tort would speed up its expansion and open an outpost here...

This is the original California Tortilla, as far as I know. The burritos are fresh and feature a wide range of interesting sauces, including Thai peanut sauce from the Thai restaurant down the street. The meat is nicely grilled, and there are lots of choices for other fillings. The interior is spartan but clean - not the place for a fancy date, but great for an informal meal or a dinner out with the (noisy) kids.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
