This is a tricky place to give a rating to, since it's not very consistent. Certain menu items on certain days are def 4s and 5s, but the standard Chinese American fare often comes out to 1s and 2s This place has come a long way... it is cleaner now with new AC put in so it's actually comfortable inside, as evidenced by more and more folks eating inside. I'd still take it back home or to the office though. Def order from the Chef Special section in their menu and/or the white board on the window front. Very authentic Chinese dishes like the double cooked pork, chicken with eggplant, and the awesome beef or ribs noodle soup! You know how chef specials elsewhere cost a bit more? Not here. $6.50 for a small and $8.50 for a large. Everything else on the menu very suspect. Vegetable fried rice? Meh. Chicken fried rice? ugh. Fried crab wontons? Super greasy and fried in old oil. Sushi? I have had avocado roll, it was cheap ($3.25) and the avocado was very very fresh. My friends have gotten their spicy tuna rolls and they look very greasy... not in a good way. Prices are very reasonable. I have always ordered by picking up my food so I have never had issues with delivery. Just stick with the Chef Special and you should be fine. Deserve a 3.5, but rounding down for being inconsistent

I'm not goin to lie, I come here a lot. Try not to judge me. I do have a good palette and I do care about what I put in my body, but if I'm craving chinese food, this is where I go cause it's close. The food is not great. however, the chef specials list is all extremely typical homecooked chinese dishes which makes me really happy, they have pork stomachs, ribs in star anise, steamed xiao long bao, and wontons, live fish and tons of great stuff thats not on the menu online, so definitely go in to order. They gave me sashimi that was still frozen, hence the 2 stars. decent lunch and dinner specials. That's all!

WARNING: My mother got two sushi rolls here. One Tuna, One Salmon. She ate the sushi and got HORRIFICALLY sick for 3 days. This was defiantly food poisoning. No doubt about it. When I picked it up, I noticed all the fish containers sitting out on the prep board. I called the owner or manager to report it, when he answered the phone and the first two minutes of the call he spoke perfect english and understood me. As SOON as I said what happened he told me "Oh I no understand, i speak no english, bye bye" and hung up. I called back and no one answered. This place made my mom deathly ill. Avoid at ALL costs.

This is the best place to grab some good food with the great price. The lunch combination from the restaurant is very a good deal. I really recommend to have lunch here. Batter rip from chef special menu is very tasty. However, the environment of the restaurant is a little bit weird.

When it comes to ordering from here, I admit, I have a problem. Delivery is pretty quick and the food was never wrong or bad. I don't really understand the bad reviews, because I love this place. It is true that I mostly order the same group of things, and try to steer clear of the really American dishes (except the fried chicken), they have yet to disappoint me. I eat like a baby pig. Their egg rolls are quite possibly the best I've ever had from a carry out and most of their dishes DON'T contain peanut oil, which I'm deathly allergic to--so I kinda appreciate that. (There's a place around the corner that literally almost killed me) I never eat in because, well, I hate college kids. But It's good for groups if you like the chatter. Its a shmedium restaurant. Not too large, but not small enough to get too crowded. The ONLY truely sad thing is THEY HAVE BUBBLE TEA but don't deliver it. (Otaku's may weep now). But otherwise, I'd say that they err on the traditional side of cooking, so to speak (I mean, it IS still fast food after-all) and if you're down for that taste then the food is solid and fairly consistent. Even if you've had a bad experience, you ought to give them another try. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to order right now.

Ordered take out again, I had the avocado salad, salmon roll and tuna roll. Delivery was quick, it took about 30 - 40 mins for them to get here. I really liked the avocado salad, portions are pretty fair, it was topped with a miso flavored dressing. The sushi was okay.. definitely had better elsewhere but hey it's take out, what do you expect, right?

The egg drop soup was delicious! The fried rice was okay.. I asked for spicy and the food was ridiculously spicy. The owners were very nice and knowledgable about vegetarian food and the food came out very quickly. Decent food for pretty cheap

These guys have perfected the art of messing up Chinese food. Their soup and fried rice taste like it has been out for a week. The mai fun has an overdose of curry powder!! Huh? Curry powder??? Grossest thing ever. Don't waste your money! They won't refund you either.

this little restaurant is just great! good food, clean, great price. they even have water and tea bags of with disposable dishes out for people to use. i love this place!

Ordered spicy chicken lomein, crab roll, california roll and crab rangoons. The lomein was flavorless, but I managed to eat some because I was hungry. The crab rangoons on the other hand I could not eat. They tasted like they were expired. The cream cheese inside was extremely sour like sour milk and it smelled/tasted like old oil on the outside. The sushi was something else... it tasted like old, musty, moldy carpet. I ordered through Grub Hub who was friendly enough. When I disputed the sushi and rangoons, they would not own up to it and I had to push Grub Hub to speak with them again. They offered 50% back, which is $3 short of the total sum of what I paid for food that went into the trash. I will NOT eat here again. I'm actually afraid I'll wind up with food poisoning from the little of it that I did manage to choke down. This is the worst chinese food... or even food period that I have ever eaten or been served.

We ordered a regular shrimp lo mein and a large orange chicken from orient express for delivery on GrubHub, Both entrees where inedible and smelled/tasted strongly of garbage. The lo mein also smelled faintly of urine. We threw both meals out. DO NOT ORDER CHINESE DELIVERY FROM ORIENT EXPRESS.

I've had some excellent food from this restaurant. Most recently, when I was ill, I ordered miso soup in large quantities and it was delicious. the broth was tasty and came with lots of seaweed, thinly sliced green onions and tofu. The chicken con soup was also good. I regularly order sushi from this restaurant. That, too, is excellent as is the seaweed salad.

Hoooorrrible! I'm putting aside the fact that I've grown up with amazing Chinese food (even at fast-food places), and I'm putting into consideration the fact that the diversity of Baltimore's food offerings can't compare to that of the SF bay area, where yours truly is from. Still, I can't get over how shockingly awful this place is. Based on the other reviews, maybe I'm just not ordering the right things....but still. My first experience more than a year ago was anything but satisfactory. What I ordered: chicken chow mein. Pretty basic. What I received: a takeout box of steamed white rice and a takeout box of chicken chow mein....without the noodles. Yes, they gave me a box of stir-fried onions, chicken, onions, bean sprouts, onions, and garlic. But mostly onions. Seriously? I guess it's not worth their time to bother telling me they were out of noodles and asking if I wanted something else. (No, they weren't unaware that I was the one who had ordered the chow mein; the waitress brought my "order" straight to me.) They couldn't even bother making some sort of "chow mein-fried rice" hybrid with the components they gave me. My second time going was not any better; the orange chicken had a stiff, hard crust that hurt my jaw to chew, and the tapioca in the bubble tea was hard and undercooked. Though I've seen people enjoying some decent-looking food here, I can't bring myself to go back to Orient Express. Again, maybe I'm just ordering everything that sucks on their menu, or maybe (my newest hypothesis) they're trying to condition me into ordering in Mandarin (sorry for preferring English?). I hate to say that this is the first Chinese fast food restaurant that I would rank underneath Panda Express. Shame.

Lovely woman behind the counter. It's a pick-up or sit-and-eat-fast hole in the wall that makes Chinese food and a small Sushi menu. This may shock some but.. This is my favorite sushi spot in the city. But the catch is... It's not good if you dine-in. I have only tried the Chinese food a few times, never leaving impressed. However, the day I decided to give thee sushi a try (and I was hesitant because if fresh fish quality is just a bit off, I have a major problem, don't I?). I tried a small order of sashimi and sushi. Each order costs about $3.5-5, but that's for 3 slices of sashimi or 2 nigiri. Compared to the majority of sushi spots that charge more than that PER piece, this was an excellent deal. But the best was yet to come.. I say down, and a man came to serve me my sushi on styrofoam plates, and to my disbelief, the sashimi slices were so thick and fresh! This was the best looking sashimi I've had in Baltimore. And coming from me, a Vancouver native where salmon sushi and sushi spots in general are amazing and world renowned, this is a big deal. I also got salmon and hamachi sushi which were excellent in size, quality and taste. They give plenty of pickled ginger too. I am a salmon and yellowtail fish fan, so I usually stick to those. The seaweed salad is very standard but for $3, you get a HUGE portion! Overall, I go here often for sushi cravings. Doesn't break my bank compared to other sushi spots. Remember, my experience is with dine-in. Delivery and take-out may be very different. Try it!

We ordered the beef chow fun, orange chicken, and sweet & sour chicken. Food was not that great (not really worth what they charge...) but the delivery is very speedy. Also, they charge no delivery fee for orders over $10. Would actually give 2.5 stars.

The food at OE is the typical goopy-gloppy, overly-sweetened Chinese-American slops. I'm OK with that as long as they can get their delivery to me within a decent amount of time. As I write, I've been waiting for over an hour and fifteen minutes. I called to cancel and got the usual lame BS about the driver had already left and, oh, so sorry, we're so busy. If they're so busy, why don't they learn to manage their business and hire some more cooks, drivers or whatever. Never again.

Really bad experience there. They cooked using rancid spare ribs!! It was our first and last time in there!! If you are there'd, just double check your food! Smell, smell, taste....

Very lovely Chinese restaurant close to Hopkins. We love the authentic Chinese food menu way better than the ordinary menu though.

The Chinese food here has been mostly awful since I moved to Baltimore in 2001, but if you stick to a few simple items like lo-mein you should be ok. Their sushi is also quite good, especially for the prices they charge.

Quick delivery in CV. The crack rangoon and sushi are both good. The sushi has warm rice and crisp seaweed. I've never eaten in the restaurant but I've walked by and it seems to have a vibrant student vibe.

Well, on the plus side, it's very very fast. Very fast. If you're getting take out, you won't believe them when they tell you your order's ready and will keep looking over your shoulder to figure out who they've mistaken you for. So that's the good. The food isn't... atrocious per se. It's not good though. It's the epitome of fake soy sauce+cornstarch American Chinese food, and not really in the guilty pleasure way. I've never gotten sick or anything from it, and I've even occasionally bought it of my own volition three or four times this year when I've been craving something gross to eat, but I really can't recommend it. The prices really aren't as low as they should be for this level of quality.

  • Kristen B.

I LOVE this place for their Americanized Chinese food. The egg drop soup is the best I've found in the city! I always get the orange chicken dinner special. The egg roll isn't very good, but otherwise its really good. I order here whenever I have craving for good ol' Americanized Chinese (which happens at least twice a month). I've actually never tried anything else here, so cant comment on it.

Horrible! Ordered for delivery and food arrived 2 hours later, still vaguely lukewarm but entirely inedible. The sushi smelled like catfood, so I had to throw out my entire dinner. My girlfriend braved her sweet and sour chicken for a few bites but had to give up in disgust shortly after. This is the worst, bar none.

  • Dan A.

Okay. I don't know why.... but i came back, despite my previous not-so-good experience here... I also don't know why but I decided to order something completely random and "exotic;" instead of ordering the General Tso's chicken like last time, I decided to go with the pork stomach with stir-fried veggies. I realize that that could have been a near-fatal mistake. I don't imagine pork stomach sells well at Orient Express... so I can just picture the chef reaching into the dark bowels of the fridge or freezer and pulling out some ancient pork stomach. Hopefully with no science experiments growing on it. But food poisoning be damned... i'm going to have my pork stomach and I'm going satisfy my curiosity (which happened to kill the cat too...possibly due to food poisoning)! The pork stomach was thinly sliced and almost looked like shiitake mushrooms at first glance. There were also a lot of celery and onions. Everything was in a thin (but very flavorful), brown sauce. I don't know Chinese food too well... but it looked pretty authentic to me. First impression: VERY salty. But strangely, as I ate more, it was less so. Maybe eating it with the (white) rice helped balance out the flavors. The celery also did a good job at providing contrast to the saltiness and the meatiness of the dish. I ordered a small size, which is definitely enough for one person. But the rice they gave was in a small little container...it would have been a little better if they provided a little more, especially because this dish's saltiness required the food to be eaten together with rice. But yeah, overall, not too bad. And I didn't get food poisoning either from choosing my random exotic dish. Yay! Might have to come again and try my luck with other items off the chef's specials menu; it seems like this is where it's at. Green mussels in black bean sauce, ribs with star aniseed sauce, and beef soup with noodles all seem like promising items.

I am college student living in the area for the summer. Two nights ago, I decided to try Orient Express out and got takeout. I ordered a salmon roll, tuna roll, and mixed chinese vegetables which were fine until I woke up at 4 in the morning vomiting. I got sick again later that morning. I definitely learned my lesson about ordering sushi from a place that I hasn't ever been recommended to me and obviously won't ever be ordering from them again.

  • Amanda I.

The only thing that earns it the one star is quick delivery. The sushi was terrible. The sweet and sour shrimp was not even edible. Cold, so much breading, small order, way too chewy. Hardly any peppers or pineapple. And this was the full size order. The rice was decent. I also got the spring rolls which were terrible. I spent $16 to eat a small thing of rice and throw out the rest.

  • Jen T.

Blughhh. Thinking about this place is making my stomach turn all over again. I'll come here multiple times a week for the bubble tea (it's the only place in the city that has it that I know of), and the sushi isn't terrible, but all the other food I've gotten from here has been pretty gross. I tried the steamed vegetable dumplings this weekend and felt nauseous for the rest of the day, and there wasn't even meat involved! Be careful which flavor of bubble tea you get, too. The milky ones are generally always delicious (I love the almond and coconut) but the peach green tea was nasty, and not in the good Janet Jackson way.

I used to love this place when i lived in CV (never mind the evil lady that barked at you when u had questions), but the food was always good. I don't know what happened over the years but ... RUN ... Do not walk, to the 2nd choice on ur list... And here's why... These two stars are ONLY for the sushi.. 1) sushi - SPECTACULAR. W/ great flavor & balance. 2) pepper steak - DRY. The rice was wrong (I ordered fried rice and got white rice that was incredibly dry - on the verge of being dehydrated again). PS - How the hell is a dish that is covered in (brown sauce) gonna taste 'dry'?!?!?!? Next trick, Orient XPress ... neat trick, indeed!!!! 3) miso soup - SALTY. I love miso soup and this was quite possibly the worst I've had. It tasted like chicken soup broth married with the broth from wonton soup ... Oh and if i believe if I sat it out to dehydrate, I'd have enough salt left to fill a salt shaker... 4) egg roll - SOGGY & FLAVORLESS 5) Arnold Palmer - AWESOME ... But that was by Arizona Tea, so it doesn't count. 6) Fortune Cookie - STALE. -Fin-

This restaurant is only 1 minute walk from where I live, so I order here every now and then. It is your below-average Chinese take-out place, nothing great about it. Whenever I order, I was always worry about the food hygiene, because my first order - some chicken dish, stink and tasted rancid, really turns me off. Second, let's be honest, the Chinese often adds weird, unhealthy, sometimes even toxic, stuff into their food (remember their milk power crisis?). So I always feel like my life is going to be shortened because I ate this food which has funny color of food dye and probably unhealthy additives in there. Anyway, I try to avoid this place as much as I can.

Abandon all hope ye who enter. Waited 1:25 for delivery order which was an hour and 25 min too long for bad food. Ordered the beef in black bean sauce. sauce was pretty good but the meat was spoiled. Tasted way off. Had the Szechuwan string beans and the beans were almost too old to be edible. Just piss poor food passing through this place. But the delivery driver did call me boss. That gets them a star. OK. 1 star. this place is just ass.

I was doing laundry next door and was suddenly overcome with pangs of hunger so great that I ignored the good advice from my fellow Yelpers to stay clear of this place. Upon entering it did have a distinctly dingy look, smell and feel. It's like the whole place is covered in frying oil then covered with dust bunnies. I ordered something I considered "safe": pork low mein. It arrived in twenty seconds flat. I opened the container and was smacked upside the head with stinky, sewagey, mold-like smelling steam. Despite the smell being near revolting, I was so hungry I couldn't stand it and I took a bite. The taste was nearly as bad as the smell. I literally spat it out and threw it away without any desire to eat anything for the next week. It was as if the dish had been pre-assembled for days and they pulled it out of a dusty back closet and tossed it in an oily hot wok to bring it up to temperature. If you ever value anyone's opinion on this place, do not venture in, not even in desperation!

If you would like to be dissatisfied with some cheap Chinese food I would do everything in my power to get you to order from here. Do you like garlic chicken? This place has a great take on garlic chicken! they use a mathematical equation to give you precisely 4% chicken, 93% water chestnuts, and 1% green leaf filler. It really is amazing! I never would eat an entire tub of garlic sauce soaked water chestnuts on my own, but now, it might be ALL I EVER EAT! Also: The Szechuan string beans tasted like salt also. The delivery guy wouldn't walk up a flight of stairs to my apartment, but instead called me and waited for me to walk down when he saw me. Moral of the story: It's bad cheap Chinese food, service sucked, and portions are lame. Have some self respect and order from somewhere else.

Don't expect gourmet, don't expect to be impressed - BUT if you are looking for solid, affordable American Chinese food & sushi that consistently delivers lightning fast, this is a great bet. I frequently order from here for my work colleagues and for myself. The order is always correct & complete (can't say this for any other place I routinely order from!), and lightning fast. Seriously, if you live nearby you are likely to get your food within 15 minutes.

  • Chaka H.

To be honest, there is nothing spectacularly special about this place... BUT, I did order the chicken fried rice and it was super yummy. I cannot speak on behalf of the rest of the menu, but I can remember walking in and instantly deciding "I'm not eating in." It's a small place that feels crowded with more than 4 people and, again in all honesty, it didn't seem that clean. Interestingly enough, I'll probably return for the chicken fried rice... which was only $4 and some change...

I am Chinese and am good at cooking, so I admit that I'm always very picky about the American Chinese food. Just some of the really good restaurants can pass my test. If you just want to order something tasty and don't care if it's the original Chinese cuisine or American Chinese style, this place is definitely a good choice. I submitted my order last night. The delivery man sent me my lunch today at exactly the right time I asked for. The steam rice was hot and soft which's better than many other Chinese delivery places. The pork was fresh and the spicy sauce was great. A tip for other customers: I grew up in the north part of China,so generally I prefer salty food. The Szechuan Pork I ordered today was perfect for my demand. So if you don't like your Chinese food's saltier than average, you'd better leave a note when you order your food. I also ordered the Japanese rolls lunch box, just wanna test if it's worthy. The thing surprised me was the materials they use were really fresh and clean.I am a foodie, especially a big fan of sushi. I'd like to give my sushi box 5 stars. Hopefully, they can keep the good quality all the time.

The restaurant is a typical Chinese take out. There are few tables inside, but overall, the restaurant does not look very clean. I mostly order take out or delivery from here. The prices are cheap. They do have a sushi bar. Also, you can try their bubble tea and other drinks. I recommend their paper chicken, which is quite cheap. But the most of the items are "so so", i.e., ok, but not too tasty. So, bottom line: if you want a cheap meal, try it. But don't expect something very awesome.

Used to eat here a lot....would always get the large serving of gen tso chicken after a long workout on the road bike. The food was never very good just ok. Than the last time I ate there the meat was rotten and I threw the food out after a couple bites.

Fake Chinese food made by...Hispanics? They cook pretty quickly, in any case. Prices are slightly higher than other local Chinese takeout joints, but food quality is not. And yeah, the old lady who works at the counter absolutely beams when you try to be nice to her.

Orient Express is great -- if you make sure to not be adventurous. They've got a huge menu, like all chinese places, but also like many chinese places, you really shouldn't order most of it. If you like the standard american-chinese dishes (s&s chicken, general tso, lo mein), you're good to go -- you'll get tasty food with generous portions. Anything a little more exotic, like moo shu chicken, is a waste -- not very tasty. The egg rolls always include shrimp, which is a nice touch. The mix of chinese & mexican kitchen staff makes for some interesting sauce choices, notably that everything that's spicy is VERY spicy. You can't order the hunan chicken and eat it without breaking a sweat. Normally, I'd assume they do it to cover up bad food, but you can order any spicy dish to be "mild" and they'll lay off the heat, resulting in some very tasty dishes. They should make "mild" the standard heat level, and would probably have more fans. I would normally give it a 3 for the lunch fare, but they get an extra star for the generous sushi portions. Most places that serve quick sushi load you up on rice. Orient Express does, too, but compliment it with HUGE portions of fish. Nigiri sushi (the piece of fish atop the sushi rice ball) is meant to be eaten in one bite, but the nigiri at OE is a two-bite affair, and that's with a very large portion of tasty tuna, salmon, or whatever you like on top. The sushi counter is separate from the rest of the kitchen, out near the rest of the eating space, so you can see that it's kept clean and made to order. They give you different soy sauce as well, which is so much better than the Kari-Out packets that it solidifies my choice for an extra star. And yes, the bizarre lady at the checkout is a trip.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
