Their bread is warm, nice & soft to bite on! Their soups & appetizers are good & they have big selection of desserts! By time you get entree your too full to finish it so good you have to take it home! Their food is very presentable, Always Excellent & their service is top notch! My waitress was very nice at substitute the sides I don't like to something else!

First was the bread, very unique like an exploding muffin, very moist, although it seemed like it could cook for a little longer. Two lobsters in one dish? How can you go wrong. Boiled to perfection, no additional flavors except for the lobster and the ocean. That is all the dish comes with. The clam chowder soup had lots of clams, but was more on watery, less on the chunky side. It was okay. Clams, cooked with garlic, these are some big clams. They even leave the clam broth for you, although it was a tad bit salty.

Labeling this place a "steakhouse" is gross overstatement. At best, it's a dingy little dive with frosty bartenders and mediocre Italian food. I was not impressed. My whiskey and lasagna were the same temperature and the booze had far more flavor. The only plus, it's cheap and nearby.

I've been here a couple times prior, and those times I'd have given the place 4-5 stars, cutlet sandwich = homemade cutlet really big excellent quality, but eating there Tuesday night I was kinda horrified and don't want to go back again any time soon. to start walking in, saw a sign (hiring all positions) I got the twin lobster and my girl friend got the roast beef. the muffin explosion bread substitutes were soggy and under cooked... the twin lobsters after dissecting them had very little meat, tons of green muck and white slimy fat... was good but eh, i'll just blow 20 bucks somewhere else on one decent sized lobster next outing... and I had the runs something fierce all night after I got home... my girl friends meal...... the roast beef, was like crappy deli slices of roast beef simmered under a heat lamp with over cooked canned pea's and sketchy mashed potatoes... she had stomach issues the remainder of the night too. I used to love this place, I really hope this turns around, I wish my g.f. had returned her meal, 20 bucks for 2 lobsters even tho they were tiny wasn't a complete rip off..... but crap I could blow 5 bucks at stop and shop and with the use of a microwave, have made her a better half assed attempt at a roast beef dinner.

This place really surprised me, in a really good way. I spent two weeks walking past this building and never thought twice about it until a friend told me about a great restaurant in Somerville by the T station that her entire extended family had been going to forever. She drove me here and I had to do a double take. The outside isn't the poshest location, but don't let that deter you! This place serves old school American fare, very 1950's feeling. The prices also seem to be a few decades behind - which at first made me think everything would be disappointing. I was wrong on so many levels about this place. I got the twin lobsters and they were cooked perfectly. Absolutely perfectly. All the meals come with "popover bread". Now, I'm not a bread person, but I ate two of these warm, fluffy creations. Ultimately I had an amazing night. If you want a cheap and fun night out look no further than Mount Vernon.

Sunday Brunch is THE BEST BRUNCH DEAL in Boston!! Well, I did not expect much but went there for lobsters in the end of September. I found out a good deal on their FB with $10.99 for brunch. So we had brunch first then lobsters. The brunch is all-you-can-eat buffet excluding drinks. They offer fruits, hot dishes, Bacon, Sausage, Ham, Made-to-Order Omelette Station, Waffles, desserts, and RAW BAR including fresh oysters, clams, and shrimps!!! We are so happy with the buffet. Everything tastes good especially the raw bar and fruits. some of the hot entrees are not my cup of tea. so pass! You should try raw bar if you are an oyster lover. We finished the brunch and decided to make our lobsters take-away. Do notice that the price they show outside of the restaurant is not the price for take-out. Ask friendly waitress for further information first. The take-out twin lobsters are great. we bought it with around $17. It's fresh but a little bit over-cooked. I guess it will taste better in the restaurant. But I still love them A LOT, anyway. 中文版評論看此: cpwen1103.blogspot.com/2…

I got the lobster bisque, lobster roll, and twin lobsters. All are great, especially boiled lobster! The stuffed was good but boiled lobster was much better. Strongly recommend!

I only wish zero stars was an option. Easily the worst dining experience of recent memory. Service was horrible: 10 minutes after being seated - no service, no water, no bread basket. Waited for over 45 mins. for four steamed lobsters brought out after I made my way back to the kitchen - no waitress to be found the entire wait time. But wait, this is the good part. After the meal I spoke with the manager. His rudeness and argumentative tone was really the icing on the cake. 2 beers, 2 sodas, 2 (2 lobster) plates, 1 order fried clams and 1 order mozzarella sticks, awful service and attitude from the manager - $110.00. What a deal- a raw deal.

The Twin lobster special was amazing! Tasted pretty fresh and quite big. Our server Peggy/Penny was really sweet. It made me feel like home right away. Will definitely be back and will encourage my friends to join me!

Great place to eat! The lobsters were delicious and very reasonably priced. Our waitress was excellent, and everything came out hot and tasty! I would definitely go back.

Three words: Twin Lobster Special. Seriously, this is the best deal in all of Massachussetts as far as I am concerned! The prices alternate and can be anywhere from $19.99 to $9.99 (!!!) - for TWO very well portioned lobsters. They were fresh, perfectly cooked, and the meal comes with their incredible popover bread, which is seriously delicious. All the reviews of poorer service/"this place is not fancy" had me worried, but the staff we came in contact with were above and beyond helpful and friendly and the dining room (the room off to the side, separate from the bar) was clean and welcoming. I paid $13.99 for two awesome lobsters (this was their special August price for early in the week) and I left incredibly FULL and very satisfied. I will DEFINITELY come back. Run, don't walk, to Mount Vernon!

This is my 5th time having twin lobsters here. Hav to say it's never disappointed me in any aspect. It always tastes fresh and delicious. And the waitress here is really friendly and considerate. It's not like a fancy steakhouse but a family style seafood restaurant. Will definitely come again and bring my friends here to try the famous TWIN LOBSTERS. Love it!!

Came here on the East Broadway Foodie Crawl and I wanted to like it so much. Lobster mac n cheese?? Yes! But it wasn't great. Odd color too. I also tried the corn chowder which needed to be put through a sieve to get the gritty part out.

Although the decor could stand some updating (at heart it is still a bar but it is clean), you'd also be a fool to be mislead by poor reviews, they just don't know what to order and if you're interested in hearing what is sooooooo special here, you'll have to reach me

Same rating, but new information! The twin lobsters special during the summer is a main draw. Last summer it was $9.99, and this summer it's $13.99. Still a great deal, and that's what most people seem to come for. If you don't like lobster (you silly fool), come on Wednesday, sit in the bar section, and get a meatloaf dinner for $5.99. Definitely the best meatloaf I've had in a very long time.

Don't get me wrong.....I have always loved this place because it reminds me of the restaurants I used to go to as a kid---old fashioned inside, great waitresses with character. But whoever this guy is....the owner or manager (older guy) just gets in the way of the customers & waitresses. The place could run itself without him. I'll give them another shot, but they really need to think about if he's the face they want for the business.

The twin lobsters are the best deal in Boston!!!! Popovers are warm and taste fantastic. Service is very good the daily two for specials are large and fresh and reasonably priced,as is all the menu. Free parking in the rear The Henry family is keeping the tradition of great food at a great price alive in East Somerville.

Nice inside don't let outside fool you. Twin lobsters for $19.35 great deal. Waitress was friendly with service just OK. Five shrimp for $24.99 a bit pricey. They were good however.

The seafood here is pretty decent. I will state that I am a Marylander. I eat blue crabs and love raw bars. This is not a maryland seafood restaurant. BUT they have a cheap twin lobster special that totally hits the spot if you're not a lobster expert. I don't know much about lobster. I know that when you eat crabs, you want to eat males. The lobsters that I had the last time were quite clearly female. So that was gross for me, but it might be totally normal. I gave this place 4 stars based ENTIRELY on the popovers. As I'm writing this review, I'm trying to plot cheaper ways to go back and JUST eat popovers. Sometimes I dream about them. They're so amazing. I mean maybe, MAYBE I can just make my own popovers.....But the service here is also pretty fun. The ambiance of Mount Vernon Tavern is hilarious, you might be detered by the bowtie wearing staff, and the rather old person, early bird special decor....but it's also amazing for the same reasons, and the staff, even if they don't love their jobs, they act like they're having fun! PLUS THERE ARE POPOVERS.

Always a solid choice. I live close by and eat here quite often. The service has always been good. The food is good. I recommend the buffalo potato skins and the freshly sliced roast beef sandwich. There's a friendly neighborhood atmosphere. Plenty of TVs and keno as well. Prices are reasonable.

The BEST lobster I have ever tried in my life!!!! Even thought this place is a little bit far from the station, it's really worth it to try!!! I went their with my boyfriend last spring break, the price of 2 lobster was $39.99. It was expensive than other season but still good! The service was very good and friendly. I really enjoyed LOBSTER here because i LOVE seafood!

Lobster is good. Burgers are downright disgusting. Beer selection is lame. Went here tonight and all 20+ TVs were showing the Sox. Asked if one TV that no one was watching could show NBA playoffs and they said no. Guess they don't like business.

I'm tempted to go 5 stars but don't want to get carried away. We had such a great time at the Mt. Vernon. The service was excellent, one of those woman who's like your best aunt or something. So many choices on the menu and the specials list, some super well priced, some a little more $$ than you'd think. While I was waiting I ordered a pinot grigio that came in a little carafe so you got about 2 glasses for the price of one. You can't go wrong with a $9.99 hot turkey sandwich with potato, stuffing and veggies tho. Turkey was maybe a tad dry but real turkey and lots of it w/ good gravy. Friend's roast beef sandwich was freshly sliced and warm. Some of the best onion rings I've had in recent memory. And of course you get those yummy popovers to start. Dessert was grapenut custard, excellent and appropriately old school. With a bottle of root beer and tax, it came to $41 and was well worth it.

I've been hunting for cheap lobster for a while, and I have finally found it! I went to Mount Vernon with my bf today, and we split the twin lobsters and the appetizer combo platter. When we walked in we immediately took note of the clientele (much older than us), and everyone was at the bar. Our waiter was very nice and attentive so service was great, no complaints. Apps- chicken wings were small but tasty, buffalo tenders were okay, mozzarella sticks were also okay and the potato skins tasted good but something was missing..I came here for the lobster so we only ordered appetizers for fun. Now, for the lobster...two medium sized lobsters showed up at our table about 10 minutes or so after we finished our appetizers. I was expecting small ones, so that was a pleasant surprise! We dug in and the meat was sweet and fresh, tasted exactly the same as every other place I've had lobster, except 1/3 or 1/4 the price? :) I will definitely be returning, and next time I'm not sharing the twin lobster special.

Twin Boiled Lobsters Special: July 20, 2014 to July 26, 2014 served between 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. Twin Boiled lobsters $13.99. Steamers $9.99. A cup of homemade clam chowder $2.99. Must be seated before 3:00 pm for this offer. WHAT A SWEET DEAL!!!!!!

Awesome! Just awesome. Not sure what's better, the service or the food. Both were ne plus ultra. We both had seafood.

Walked by the place a million times, and finally decided to try it. With that, I am glad that I did. the popovers are incredible, and are a reason to go alone. I had a cup of clam chowder, if you are from the area you know should already know about it. So good. I also followed that up with fish and chips which was excellent. Also had a Sam Adams cold snap which was a nice side compliment. It was night time so it was rather busy, but the server handled it very well. I will most definitely be back.

This place would be great if you wanted to go have a beer, watch a game, and grab a sandwich. Don't think that you will get more out of it than that. I ordered the salmon Rockefeller which was supposed to come with fresh lobster on top. The lobster was frozen and like leather. The salmon would have definitely been better without it (and the price would have been better too, it was 24.99!). Unfortunately the beer was the best part of my meal.

This place is a movie set from "Mystic River". Colorful locals. Rich local culture. Gritty neighborhood. Should I carry? Should I keep doing the sweep? No. Did I mention they have fantastic quality food and supremely economical prices? Oh, boy; yes. Nothing not fresh. Good people. May the service sometimes not be from a young hottie? Yes. Abundant free parking? Yes. Hard to find with or without a GPS? Yes. May you sometimes get ignored? Yes. Will you enjoy every minute? Resounding Yes. You really have to go here if you haven't. Sign up for their e-mails. And tip like the server needs it, Because she does. They used to have three locations until the 2008/9 slump, and now they are back to their original, single location. You will not be disappointed and you will return.

We went to Mt. Vernon on the way home from Water Country with 3 hungry, tired boys. I had a gift card, so we thought we would use it. The hostess was very friendly, and seated us quickly. It was a Saturday night at 6:00, and the restaurant was very quiet. I was surprised at how big the restaurant was. Our waitress took our drink orders right away, and brought us hot rolls and popovers, which were all delicious! The boys got clam chowder to start, which was definitely homemade and very good. For dinner, I got the twin lobsters which were $19.35. I thought that was an odd amount, but still very reasonable. The lobsters came with drawn butter, but no side dishes. They were soft shell, fresh, and delicious. My husband had the lobster roll, which was really big. The boys got 2 grill cheese sandwiches and a roast beef dinner. Everything was really good. I would say this is an old school, solid restaurant. We will be going back for dinner, as well as to try their brunch!

Had the artichoke stuffed rigatoni appetizer ... So yummy!! (and an absolute steal at $4.99) The bar menu had a large variety and the prices were so low!!! Don't let the prices fool you ... They certainly don't skimp on quality!! The lobster roll was chock full and twin stuffed lobsters could feed an army! I've heard great things about their Sunday brunch!! We'll definitely be back!!

Ditto the the other reviewers on that this place is really only good for the cheap lobster and the prime rib, everything else on the menu tastes pretty dismal. I came here a few months back with the fam for a birthday dinner. We ordered a couple of prime ribs, a salmon dish and a haddock dish, as well as the New England sampler app. The Cons of the Meal: While the bacon wrapped scallops in the sampler were good, the stuffed clams and oysters were quite salty and not too delicious. The salmon and haddock dishes were extremely overcooked and came topped with these putrid sauces. The Pros: The prime rib was juicy and delicious, as were the complimentary popovers that come with the meal. Service was very friendly and attentive. Prices were reasonable. I'd be back for the prime rib and to try the lobster deal, but the rest of the menu needs some revamping.

The best thing: two lobsters for $14.99. Can't get that in Maryland! Everything else: super blah. The waitress had a definite attitude and gave us a look when only one of us ordered a beverage other than water. She refused to take more than two credit cards. She gave very confusing answers when a friend asked about the contents of the "seafood stuffing" in one of the menu items. My friend's stuffed haddock tasted, in her words, "like rubber." The popovers that came out initially were not fluffy and didn't seem to have risen enough. The lobster mac and cheese had barely any lobster and cost nearly as much as two lobsters-- at a place like this, you'd think they'd give generous chunks. The lobster roll was fine. The location seems a little sketchy and the decor is definitely dated.

Don't let the fact that your grandparents have been eating here since 1967 prevent you from making a stop at Mount Vernon. Yep... it's old school. Nope...It's not hip or pretty inside. The last time we were in, they were playing Neil Diamond's greatest hits over the sound system and I suspect they've had that album since it came out. But.... it's a good old-fashioned Somerville icon with some really good food. Let's start with the popovers. I can honestly say... ANY restaurant that starts you off with freshly baked popovers already has my attention. Big, hot popovers with lots of butter arrive shortly after you are seated and they are everything you imagine a good popover to be. The menu is pretty standard American fare. There is a focus on seafood, and it's exactly what you think it would be.... scrod, stuffed shrimp, fried scallops et al. They always have lobsters on the menu and are known for the Twin Lobster special. There is also a nice assortment of "red sauce" Italian favorites, like the Chicken Parm that comes in a portion so big you could easily make two meals out of it. The double cut pork chops are a great choice, too. Plan to take one of them home unless you are really hungry. It's priced fairly, but don't expect Mount Vernon to be super "cheap". Entrees run in the $17 - $20 range for standard fare and the Baked stuffed lobster tops the menu at $32. We had a Groupon for our most recent stop and it made a $60 dinner for two into a $40 dinner for two. That's a great value!

  • Corey L.

Stopped in on a Sunday night armed with a Groupon. Sat at the bar, enjoying the ambiance of the a restaurant lost somewhere in my grandparents past. The staff have all been there for like 20 years and are fun like that - sweet and with the right amount of attitude. Not much in the way of wine or beer choice, but I like what they had - the typical beers with some wheats and cider. Mmmm Angry Orchard. We started with the bread (big gnarled chunks of tasty bread) and my salad that accompanied my dinner. Tiny plate of iceburg lettuce with some carrots and a slice of cucumber and tomato (to pretend there was a nutritional component) and 2 cups of ranch dressing. Mind you, 30% of the plate was taken up by ranch containers. That about somes up the food options and typical restaurant goers here. 5 leafs of iceburg lettuce to 2 cups of ranch. Anyway, I didn't go with the obvious lobster b/c I don't get it. Why does everyone go crazy over lobster? Restaurants grab it out of the ocean, boil it for 10 minutes, drop it on a plate with no seasoning or flavoring whatsoever (except melted butter....mmmm) and then we have to do the work of dismantling it. In a race before the butter cools. I don't get it. It doesn't even taste that good - especially not for the crazy prices restaurants charge. So I got the lobster ravioli. Not bad. 6 big pieces swimming in a thick pink sauce. Came with the salad and a veggie side - I went with butternut squash and got a bowl of it, piping hot. Not flavored in any way, but not bad. My girlfriend got the scallops and same sides. Scallops were really good. Not that buttery and cooked quite perfectly. Really good. Finished with a chocolate and peanut butter bread pudding. It was dry and not warmed all the way through, but decent. Overall, no frills or fanciness, prices are okay - it's the place you go when you just want some food cooked for you with a beer

I feel this is the classic kind of place that doesn't necessarily jump out to a younger generation because of how long its been around / its history, but as a total urbanite I can say its worth heading out to Sullivan Square for. Food portions are delicious and plentiful, and the service is very friendly. I also thought the prices were very reasonable - this is a great place to bring your family (when I have relatives in town, we'll typically meet up here). Definitely like the lobsters and any of the entrees, pasta, pork, meatloaf etc.

We had the clam chowder,it was very good, the salad..fresh and very good..I had haddock with mashed potatoes and peas..the haddock was crazy fresh also!! It was excellent!! My friend had e lobster roll...omg..to die for!!! I should have asked what brand of Pinot Grigio I drank..it was crisp and really good...my friend had a can...he loved it!! The mount Vernon is going on 80 years...they are a perfect mix of old school and up to date ...I love it!! Can't wait yo go back!!!

Other reviewers totally nailed the ridiculous brunch buffet, with one glaring omission. While some dudes note that the buffet includes donuts -- easily its most salient feature, prime rib be damned -- everyone totally dropped the ball on noting where said donuts came from. Where they made in-house? Picked up from Donut & Donut down the street at Sullivan Station? Were they just powdered donettes from Stop n' Shop? I had to know, which is why my wife and I dropped like $17 each one Sunday. And, for the record, they're more definitely from Demets in Somerville. I'd recognize those fancy new Demets dulce de leche's anywhere. They also had a few raised glazed and some honey dips. All Demets. And while Demets might not be the dopest donuts in Somerville, they're good enough to do the job at hand, even if, assuming each donut's worth about $1, you'd have to eat a dozen and a half to recoup your buffet investment. Or, if you're a total square, I guess you could make up the difference with unlimited fresh oysters and perfectly rare prime rib or something. PS: If you're going for dinner with two people, get one of those senior citizen-esque two-person dual entrees. I recommend the pork chops. They're cheaper than roadkill, and almost as masculine.

I've been dining at the Mt. Vernon Restaurant since early 2014 and I've tried something different, from classics to new fancy, every time I've been there. So far, everything has been good for this fussy foodie. The kitchen staff really pays attention to requests like 'no salt' or 'cook lightly.' I tried the Baked Salmon Rockefeller dish & it was unbelievably delicious & cooked just right (not over cooked as requested)! The presentation was a foodie's delight with a shelled lobster claw on top, fresh baby spinach & hollandaise sauce that was not overly salty. The accompanying oversized carrots were incredibly fresh, sweet & cooked perfectly (not al dente). We asked for the accompanying potato-french fries to be served separately as an appetizer while we waited for our dinners & they were accomodating. Our server was Michael & he was very attentive during this slower time of the day. The server from last month, Linda, remembered me and was nice to stop for a chat. Overall, I recommend Mt. Vernon Restaurant for its variety, quality in food & service, along with very reasonable prices.

For dinner, I ordered the twin lobster $19.99 with a side of order of vegetables and both were lukewarm. I complained to the waitress and she brought it back to the kitchen to heat it up in the steamer. It came back maybe 1 degree warmer There was no steam coming from the lobster and when I split the tail from the body the water was room temperature. If it was hot, there should be steam coming out of the lobster but there was no steam! At a restaurant, I expect hot food to be hot and not lukewarm. The lobsters were NOT FRESHLY COOKED since it was lukewarm. They must cook the lobsters ahead of time or it was returned from another customer complaint. The lobster meat was good but I was very disappointed it was lukewarm. WARNING THE TWIN LOBSTERS ARE SERVED LUKE WARM!

This restaurant looks like a dive from the outside, but is much better inside. The clientele is older, those looking for an early-bird special, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! They have a pretty broad menu, ranging from classic Italian plates, to steak, to seafood. Prices are very reasonable. I ordered a lobster pie/casserole dish, which was packed with lobster meat, and it was $20; easily $10 cheaper than every other place. Our waitress was meh; she got the job done. The quality/preparation of the food was mediocre, I accept that since it's at such a good price. A nice place to add into the occasional dinner-out rotation.

A local staple especially for a local like myself. 4 of us went there for lobsters. Steve had a Mt Vernon card so we got the twin chicken lobsters for 12.99 and got a percentage off the tab. That's without going there on Monday or whatever day they offer the special. Well worth getting the card if you go a couple times a year. The meal would of cost of around $150 without the card but ended up costing about $100. Cha Ching! Shout out to Mrs. M who greets you at the door!!!

Came here for the two twin lobsters for $14.99. Not only did the lobsters lack a lot of meat, but the waitress ignored us pretty much the entire meal. The bread before the meal was good though.

Without questions, the best place in Boston to order Maine lobster! The prices here are unreal. Where else can you sit at a restaurant and eat two 1.25 pound Maine lobsters for $20? This place has been in business over 75 years! They offer a relatively large menu with about 50 items to choose from, all offered at a very low price ($8-$15). I have never seen such low prices for the items on this menu. On this occasion I ate 4 lobsters (What would you do if you were visiting from San Diego?). Even though I was stuffed with food, I had to order their steamers. I don't normally eat them, but once again, I was in Boston so I had to try them. Delicious! These guys know how to cook. If there was a downside to this restaurant, it would only be the look inside and the fact that you feel like you are in the ghetto. In order to reach this restaurant, I took the Red Line to Sullivan Square and walked under the freeway a block. It was only a 3 minute walk, but I don't think I would attempt it at night. Once you make it to Mount Vernon, the inside feels like you are at a stripped down version of Denny's (no offense, it just seemed very bland, plain, and stark). I really didn't care once inside because the food, prices and people working there made it all worth while. Congratulations on being in business for over 75 years!

I went to their Revere location tonite - Mt Vernon at the Wharf - for the twin lobster special for 9.95!!! It was fabulous! Nice hot popovers, great service, juicy succulent steamed lobsters, nice entertainment, dining outside on the water on a beautiful summer night. What could be better than that! ps. sign up for coupons at their website! get your 9.95 twin lobstahs too!

Was there today one star at best. Ordered off the special Turkey $8.99. Asked If I would like the diner instead. Fine. Received meal it was not white meat as told. Server states white meat only on sand which even though it now cost $13.99. What a fool $5.00 more for dark meat. Second time in a row been disappointed.Shall not return after many years as a customer. Bill F.

Old school joint. I travel to the area 3-4 times a year from Northern California. Nice to just pull up a seat at the bar, watch a little sports, and have a good meal. Mainly known for their twin lobster special, two good sized lobsters boiled for $21.95, how can you beat that. They also have a well priced prime rib but they now only serve this Fri-Sun.

We have been coming for the past 4 years. We enjoy the local atmosphere and have found the food good. Tonight my wife had the salmon and I had the broiled scrod. The fish has lost it's freshness. The cut looked very portioned controlled, the taste was blah and the texture was chewy. My fish was either not scrod, was frozen or both. Their scrod was always light, moist and flaky. What I had sucked and I left over 1/2 of it. I had to ask the waitress if the fish is now frozen, but she denied it. Screw with portions but don't screw with quality especially fish in Boston.

Our local host suggested going to this place for lobsters. We came the next day walking over there from staying in Somerville. We were the first to arrive for an early lunch (11am?) They had steamed/boiled twin chicken lobsters for $20 with butter, which she recommended and kept raving about, so we ordered this in addition to a clam chowder. The lobsters were very small and after consuming them and the soup, we were still quite hungry! I didnt' see what the rave was all about. then two days later, she tells us to get lobsters in chinatown and boil them at the apartment, but it was too late as we were leaving Boston and it was too inconvenient. We later learned that you could just BUY them at the local supermarket--Market Basket--and they steam them for you complimentary (although it took THIRTY minutes on a Saturday morning instead of ten minutes). We so regret not knowing about this earlier and not having ordered some.....sigh..... I suggest if you want some tasty lobsters go to Chinatown to a chinese restaurant where you can order it with scallions/ginger stir fry--much more flavorful. I did this on a previous E. Coast tour 2 yrs ago and regret not having the time to do this this time. And it's cheap, too. $19.99 for 2, still is. MUCH MUCH MUCH more flavorful and healthy....the tour buses actually take the tourists there and have their steamed lobsters so they shoudl have a huge inventory.....

I love everything about The Mount Vernon. The service is always a good mix of friendly but sassy, the food is good, and we always leave with leftovers. Odds are, you have a 95% chance of being the youngest table of people on the dining room side on a Monday when all the old folks come out for the discounted twin lobsters. Or most nights, actually. Back to the service, the waitstaff is always very friendly and accommodating, no matter if you're on the bar or restaurant side. Can you think of another place where you're going to get popovers? Me neither. They are good here, and if you're like my dad, you're gonna stash those babies in the purse of your dinner companion and eat them up for breakfast with some jelly. The popovers are always hot when they hit the table for optimum butter meltage when they get smeared. If it's seafood you're looking for, this is the place for you. I've tried the twin lobsters, and boiled is absolutely the way to go. There's a stuffed lobster, and while the stuffing is good, it's very rich. It's messy and fun and very reasonably priced. Along with that, any of the seafood dishes are tasty. If you love eating multiple creatures from the sea in one dish, I suggest the seafood scampi. The scampi has lobster meat, haddock, huge, delicious scallops, and shrimp atop a cheese filled fresh pasta and broccoli in a buttery white wine sauce. I also enjoyed the broiled scallop dinner, which was a lighter dinner and delicious. For seafood starters, I would suggest the lobster bisque. It is so good, and I totally know that the next time I am sick I am sending Mr. Moos here to pick me up some. The Mount Vernon also offers a nightly dinner for two: Sunday: Turkey Dinner (Somerville) $20.99 Monday: Prime Rib $20.99 Tuesday: Baked Haddock $20.99 Wednesday: Veal Parmesan $20.99 Thursday: Extra Thick Pork Chops $20.99 Friday: Baked Scallops $21.99 Saturday: Roast Beef $20.99 You can't cook at home for those prices, and what I've tried has been really good. The prime rib is awesome, and the pork chops are massive! I say avoid the peas as a side, but other than that, everything is good. They also run monthly specials, and I finally tried the June special, which is chicken cacciatore, and it was super tasty. The red sauce was rich and flavorful, the linguine was cooked perfectly and definitely fresh, and the peppers and onions barely cooked so they have a wonderful crispness. The monthly specials are usually $12-13 on average for dinner. One side note: there's very few meat free options, so if you're vegetarian, you'll probably be eating pasta, salad, or delicious fried things. Drinks here can be fun. They have a Mount Vernon brew on tap, and that runs you $2.50 a glass. So cheap! It's a basic light beer, but for $2.50, you can't beat it. Cocktails are massive and on average will set you back around $7-8 for a specialty beverage. The pineapple martini will totally get you drunk in one swoop, and I enjoyed the refreshing pomegranate mojito. I am not sure what basic well drinks cost, but I am sure it's reasonable. They offer keno and scratch tickets on the bar side to round out your bar experience. The Mount Vernon also offers breakfast during the week, and a brunch buffet during the weekends. I haven't made it in, but I am sure it's crazy. I know there's a carving board along with typical breakfast fixings. The Mount Vernon is an experience. Either you'll love it or be confused, but I personally love it.

Service was excellent!! Ask for Kathy she is awesome! Went with a LARGE group (14). The Seafood Newburgh, was great, the pork chops were good and massive. The scallops Miranda was delish, and multiple people really enjoyed the twin lobster special!! The side of vegetables were really great too, but most of us were too full to finish them.

I've been going to the Mt. Vernon, off and on, since I was but a wee lad (under 10 anyway, 30 plus years ago...) and after recently visiting for my birthday I decided I HAD to give it a quick Yelp shout out. My wife and I arrived around 4 ish on a Sunday and, despite having reservations, we were the only ones in the dining room. And let me tell you, that dining room hasn't changed in YEARS. It's easily the most Tarrintino-esque spot in all of Somerville complete with red vinyl booths and fake wood paneling. The waitress, and old-school 'ville resident for sure, calls you "hon" and treats you like family. We order a king cut prime rib for the wife (so I can share, natch!) and the twin lobsters for me (one boiled, one baked-stuff). The popovers arrive (hot and tasty!) and the drafts cold and tall... My lobsters were HUGE, perfectly cooked (I'm a stickler for properly cooked seafood and the lobby's were divine!) and, perhaps the biggest surprise, my wife's King Cut prime rib was INSANE - cooked to medium rare spot-on goodness, it was meatier (ie less fatty) and bigger (and, all in all, a whole lot tastier) than Frank's King cut (albeit slightly more expensive) and, when the bill arrived less than expected we were that much happier. By this time, 6:00 or so, the place started to fill up quickly - young townie parents enjoying the 2 for $20.00 turkey dinners, families and groups of friends all poured in happy and excited for some vintage Somerville fare. Full and buzzed, I left with enough in the doggie bag to keep our Cairn terrier happy and as I stepped outside the time warp of the Mt. Vernon dining room I felt more than a little bit like an extra from "Jackie Brown" and was reminded, once again, as to why I love and live in Somerville...

This is an old school spot with old school servers and patrons. I've been here 5 times or so and each time I realize more and more how bad their food is. The pasta is always overcooked, scampi is watered down, and baked scrod is really heavy and lacking any flavor. On top of that, the prices are high, they haven't remodeled since the 70's and the dark walls, and booths that are falling apart and sometimes have fallen off while sitting are just some of the things that have convinced me I should stop wasting my money here and you shouldn't either.

Fantastic Value for the money. Twin Lobsters $14.99 the waitress we had was very nice. I only give it a 5 star because the atmosphere could be spruced up at bit. But I guess if they did that the prices would double. Nice Car Park in the back to Park the Car as well.

summary: mediocre food, old people, but cheap lobster. The one AWESOME thing I had was their clam chowder. Flavorful, creamy, clammy, potato-ey, mouthwatering goodness. It set me up to look forward to my meal. The pop-overs were good too, if dense. I ordered the roast beef dinner with mashed potatos and peas. Eating here was like eating at that friends house who's mom cooks a lot but not necessarily well. It's edible because its bland and hot. They do serve you a TON of food though.

What popovers? I've been here two weekends in a row, and no popovers... just a loaf of bread (scali?) served on a thick wooden bread board with a huge old-fashioned steak knife. Peas looked over-cooked at another table, so opted for the other vegetable (mixed) which was okay. Very basic salad. Go for the twin lobster special, like most of the customers as evidenced by the lobsters and their remains on the tables around me. It's been $11.99 for the past couple of weekends, with a coupon in the Metro making it $9.99. Nice, but no-nonsense waitresses. *** 8/2012 *** Read another yelper's review that mentioned the Mt. Vernon card. I called and found out that the Mt. Vernon Rewards Card is available for purchase for a one time fee of $10, and enables the diner to earn points - 1 point per dollar spent with 100 points converting to $10 off. And the card grants eligibility to partake of the specials offered sometimes on Mondays or weekends. Very nice for a regular patron of Mt. Vernon.

In conjunction with a memorial service, extended family from many locations wanted to have brunch. Constitution Inn recommended Mt Vernon for Sunday morning. It could not have been better. An intimate seating so we could gab; a most helpful staff; and the most amazing buffet I have ever seen. Oysters!! for breakfast; I was in heaven. You need directions as the streets are not well marked; but there is parking and the cost is very affordable. We can not wait to go again.

I moved t0 East Somerville back in April leaving behind my old Union Square favorites and was very happy to find that I live so close to the Mount Vernon. My wife and I have gone almost weekly and enjoyed both their tasty food and their fantastic customer service. We are on a first name basis with a few of the waiters at the Mount Vernon and it's little things like having the waiter know what I want to drink before I even order it. We are even club members and can earn points to get discounts on our checks. We still haven't gone for brunch yet but it's coming one of these days. I suggest trying the Mount Vernon burger with onion rings, some of the best I have ever had. Come to East Somerville some time you will be pleasant surprised.

Lobster Stuffed Lobster; not quite. Very miniscule amount of lobster and far more stuffing. Head's up.....Stuffing is mixed with green peppers. Great if you like them, not so much if you detest them. They should tell their customer's what it's stuffed with. Lobster meat, what little there was, was tasteless and stale. Baked potato is not actually baked but microwaved and peas were not drained and were swimming in water. We never received any water and the server never bothered to ask if wanted any. Restaurant is dingy and AC did not work properly. The chef, or one of the chefs exited the kitchen multiple times to attend to what appeared to be a table of friends or family. Very annoying given how small the dining area is. Never felt like our business was appreciated and more so just going thru the motions. Wish I had something more positive to say but our guests were also sorely disappointed. Lobster casserole was also dry and tasteless as were the broiled scallops. PS: this was Sunday afternoon visit.

I heard this place described as the hidden gem of Somerville, and I can't agree more. Don't get scared away by appearances. The average age of the clientele is somewhere around 70, and the decor is outdated and campy. That's okay, it will be worth it. The crab-stuffed mushrooms and bacon-wrapped scallops were to die for. They also serve 2-for-1 specials most nights that include a salad and a huge entree for each person at about $20 total. Finally, you can't beat the two lobster special for $15. The only drawback was the clam chowder. It clearly comes out of a can and it tastes terrible. If you avoid that, you'll be in great shape.

This is a solid townie place. I've been by there a million times but never stopped in. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, I had a late lunch/early dinner there. I ate in the pub area. The place was mostly empty due to the odd time of day. I started with the American Chop Suey. For $2.99, it was huge enough for a small meal, without getting anything else. It was a nice combination of macaroni, ground beef, spices, cheese, and bread crumbs, fresh-baked in a crock that was served piping hot. It could've been seasoned more, but after adding some worcestshire sauce and tabasco, it was fantastic. For an entree, I got the Stuffed Pork Chop. It was a single, large chop that was pink on the inside -- not undercooked, but juicy and perfect. The stuffing was tasty and fresh. It came with mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and a cup of applesauce. This was really good comfort food -- similar to the S&S in Inman Square. Prices were very reasonable, and service was impeccable -- my waiter was AWESOME. I would totally go back to the Mount!

Meh...not a big lobster fan. They do have a good deal though for $20ish. They had great large salads, decently fast and honest service, and the clam chowder was really good but super salty. A little bit middle of nowhere..but then again it was easy to park infront of the place with meter parking for a quick lunch.

I truly believe that had the fine folks on The Sopranos wanted to place to off Carmela Soprano, they would have sought out Mount Vernon and fared beautifully. It has that certain somethin'-somethin' that'll make you think, "maybe my uncle really didn't work in the waste management business after all", or, "Yelp Central Jersey sounds like a really cool idea all of a sudden". I invite you to muse over these thoughts and more while treating yourself to all that is Mount Vernon. Sure, it's somewhat rundown and you have a great view of the highway while you dine; sure, it's more crass than class. All it will take is one bite of the scallops wrapped in bacon, though, to let you start your love affair with Somerville's best kept secret. Or perhaps the lobster bisque. (Hint: order the lobster ravioli for your entree and you'll see that the lobster ravioli's sauce *is* the lobster bisque. That's right. You're not reading that wrong.) Try the New England Sampler for an appetizer, which is oysters Rockefeller, the aforementioned scallops, and clams. And not only are the portions huge no matter what course you're ordering, the prices are quite reasonable. Mount Vernon is known for the twin lobsters, but it's entrees such as "lasagna and chicken parmigiana combo" which sets it miles apart from the competition. They know that both those entrees on their own are so great and that it's sometimes hard to choose, so they give you half and half. Perfect idea. Mount Vernon has won me over and then some. That's probably why, since being introduced to it a month ago, I've been back once a week. Maybe more than that, but that's my little secret. I know, I shouldn't keep secrets, but I shared the best one with you already! See you there!

I happen to love Mount Vernon. The neighborhood white trashiness of it is exactly what I love. They are not pretentious and you can always expect a good solid meal for a decent price. The twin lobsters are good and you can't forget the popovers. Only got a 4 because they no longer have the 2 for 1 special on Mondays and Tuesdays

I had the Mount Vernon catered my parents 50th wedding anniversary last night and could not be more pleased. Everyone was raving about the food. Great buffet selection of prime rib, baked haddock and chicken supreme, along with roasted potatoes and fresh mixed vegetables. The staff did a wonderful job from start to finish and was attentive to our needs. I would recommend using the Mount Vernon for any catering needs.

If I had to sum up Mount Vernon: Old-school solid American comfort food in a relaxed setting with excellent service. On a cold Saturday night in January we went here on a whim. I have always wanted to try the place, and I guess I was even a little surprised when I suggested it when we were driving by. We parked across the street in some metered spots (bring quarters) and were seated immediately. The place wasn't crowded, so we didn't have to wait a minute before we got our menu's and drink orders were taken. Let me say this right off the bat-this is huge. So many restaurants these days have servers (and even hosts) that really shouldn't be in the business. We felt welcomed, and this is something every restaurant should get right. Service really exceeded my expectations though, but more on that later. So, what about the food you ask? We were brought some turnovers, which I liked-but didn't love. I guess my expectation was built up from my date-but I think basic warm rolls would have suited my taste more. I don't know if we got an off batch, but if these were better, I may have even leaned the other way and gone with five stars, but in all fairness that may have been a little much, even though I really did like the place. For apps we got the Calamari and the clam chowder. Both of these were good-not exceptional-and we were hungry. The chowder was what chowder should be-creamy, w/a fair amount of clams, potatoes and maybe a hint of buttery taste. I like a little more spice or herby taste to it, so with a little pepper, it suited me perfectly...really no complaints and I am admittedly a bit of a chowder snob. The Calamari was breaded and thick and I liked it. I have had some great Calamari in the last year or two, so I have been spoiled, but this really held up-solid 3.5, maybe 4 stars. If you want some killer Calamari-try some of the Portugese places in Fairhaven, MA-they serve it spicy!!! That said, I think most people will enjoy this. We were served salads before our entrees but after our apps. Everything was timed very well by the kitchen and Elaine our waitress. I have to say, the staff here seemed to be great and our server was the best. I hope the owner reads this because they really do have a great employee in Elaine. When it comes to dinning out, I have come to really appreciate a good server. They can make a good meal bad, or an OK meal good. Elaine made a good meal GREAT!!! As for the salad-what's really to say about salads-vegetables on a plate w/dressing-it was what it should be-filling, tasty and relatively healthy. Entree time (Yum-Yum). I had the steak tips, and the lovely lady got the pork chops. Both of these were served with potatoes and a choice of steamed veggies or Delmonico broccoli (read: creamy cheese sauce), we both opted for the latter-and they were great!!! My baked and her mashed were solid, but it was the entrees that were awesome. We shared our food, and both loved our own entrees-the chops were great-and plentiful. The tips though were some of the best I have ever had!!! Cooked to perfection (Medium) and obviously marinated with love. Honestly I was pretty full after the salad...don't get me wrong, I packed it all in, but I say this because as you get fuller-your taste buds don't deceive you as much...So I can say without hesitation, if you like tips, do yourself a favor and try these!!! Bottom line, I have paid a lot more for solid meals like this, and while this seems to be a place that is frequented by the older set, I think that is partly because of it's location and partly because the place hasn't tried to change to fit in with food trends and what have you. Frankly I don't think this is a weakness, I think it's a strength. I must add it's nice to eat at a non-mega chain, food by the numbers place that has some character... That's my take on Mount Vernon anyway.

Went out with a few friends in search of a good, cheap lobster dinner. Atmosphere: Large geriatric crowd, we were definitely the only people under the age of 60. I normally don't mind this but the whole restaurant has a sterile retirement-home feel. A bit strange. On the other hand, the restaurant was very quiet - a good place to go for conversation. Service: Our waitress was a sassy Bostonian, quick to make fun of those asking questions. It was all in good fun but I probably would have been ticked if I was not in the mood. Food: Two of us got the lobster special (2 lobsters for about $20) and the third got a chicken dish. The lobsters were okay. They are definitely small, and we didn't get any sides, which makes having 2 lobsters a necessity. The chicken dish was pretty bad. It looked like a chicken breast that had been pounded out and baked with a slice of cheese on top. There was some sort of sauce that went with it. Not impressed, especially given the price (~$17). Overall we were disappointed. True, the lobsters are very cheap but I would gladly fork over another $5-10 for a larger lobster with quality sides. If you just want lobster and nothing else, and don't mind eating in a retirement home with a slightly rude waitstaff then this is the place for you! Otherwise, keep looking.

Mt. Vernon can be a great place. It all depends on what you order. Stick with the specials or their highlights and you really can't go wrong. Veer off that, and maybe you should try that elsewhere. A few weeks ago, we were headed toward the South Shore to grab steak tips but our stomachs screamed out "I WANT FOOD NOW!" just as we happened to pass by Mt. Vernon. The boy has been wanting to try this place for awhile, so the snap decision was made to go here. And there happened to be a parking spot, literally right outside the front door. It's a sign! My sister and her bf each had the steak tips. They were just ok, nothing phenomenal. The boy ordered the roast beef special advertised on the window. This included a roast beef sandwich, fries and a beer for $7. He says the roast beef was amazing. I took a bite and it was pretty good. I ended up with the chicken dish recommended by the waiter (not sure what it's called but it was in the top box). He did not steer my wrong. It was so good and so plentiful that my sister pushed away her dish to dig into mine. Seriously, how can you go wrong with a couple pieces of grilled chicken breasts covered in cheese with garlic and spinach on top surrounded by a spinach ravioli. It's like someone was digging around in my brain asking what all my favorite foods are, then took it here to develop an amazing meal. Our waiter was pretty cool, very friendly and joked around with us, just a little bit slow, though but I think it's because he was attending to others around the bar. He was super nice about everything so that made up for it.

Arright, arright, ANOTHER update because my boyfriend and I got the "Dinner for Two" special last week and it was yummy and value-licious. For $22, you each get a soup or salad, entree of whatever it is that night (it changes each day of the week; the night we went it was Baked Scallops), peas or mixed veg, a potato served in the style of your choice, and dessert! Don't expect to be blown away by the dessert, though - we had our choice of vanilla ice cream and "Grapenut Pudding," which sounds like a dish someone's clueless Midwestern mom would serve at a potluck.

Stick to the lobsters! And ONLY the lobsters. Everything else here is old and inedible... and might make you sick. Arrived around 7:00 on a summer Saturday night and at every table nearly every guest was eating the twin lobsters - a red flag that should have registered with me.DUH! We waited about five minutes for our server to arrive and take our drink order. After drinks were served, it was 30 MINUTES before he was back to take our food order. Chowder was then served which I didn't like but my four year old ate out of pure hunger. (pasty/extremelysalty & those weird pinkish clams). We asked for bread. It was another fifteen minute wait for their "popovers." They were OK...but kinda crusty in a "cooking with Crisco" way. FINALLY dinner came a minute after the bread. My husband's lobsters were fine. His broccoli au gratin was sitting in a pool of congealed brownish cheese. It was revolting. My fish (lemon pepper haddock) was old and dry. My son's fish and chips were served with hot oil splashing around on top of their curved surface. The waiter warned him that they were dangerous. The chips weren't drained properly.I had to use our table napkins to drain them. My rice was mushy but edible so I ate it all, and tried to pick out some unscathed fries from under my son's fish. As we were leaving my son grabbed his belly and told me he didn't feel well. When we got home he rushed to the bathroom and vomited all over the floor. Likely the freaky pink chowder, but maybe the fish au greasy. Eeeeek for sure!

I live fairly close to here and stop in once a month or so. They serve good American comfort food, with a slight emphasis on seafood. I just had the Lobster Mac and Cheese the other day and liked it. The service is always good and the atmosphere fits the menu and restauarnt well. I have had a few items that I didn't care for, but for the most part the food is great.

Ok, So i completed trashed the Mt. Vernon last time. I saw a sign on outside saying "12.99 twin lobster special", and I'm a sucker, but I decided to give it a shot. Well, for this particular dish, I was extremely happy. I got two lobsters that if I went to Market basket I would pay maybe $1 less for the same amount of lobster. However, of course, there's 0 prep time involving a restaurant. The waiter was honestly friendly, and I even tried their chicken soup which was good, but not great. It was a very slow Monday at lunch time, and i was generally very happy. The only complaint was my coke tasted awful, like someone hadn't clean the soda pipes in forever.

Don't expect high class or to impress a new date here. This is a place to go with your family, buddy, or loved ones to just enjoy good food at a reasonable price without feeling rushed. The food is relatively simple, but that's not a terrible thing, is it? I've been here for a holiday function and enjoyed their full spread, particularly enjoyed their beef wellington, the outer layer heavy on butter, flaky, and brings dread to my waistline. The popovers were a bit on the crisp side for me, but hot. The steak was done just fine and the hours passed by briskly. Wonderful to have hot and hearty food with the snow cascading outside. The most important thing I can really say about this place is... trust their seafood. What you don't see is the wonderful thing you get. There is no holding tank. The lobsters never mingle with that treacherous water that you see in so many other restaurants, a rare practice in my experience, and you can taste the difference. I've had wonderful oysters here as well, though I know not the origin. I'll ask next time. And no, I haven't worked here, I've just been a fly on the wall. Dishes to try: Lobster, Beef Wellington

I don't know if many people know, but this place has brunch on the weekends... in fact this place has an entire room in the back of the place that is full of brunch, and a practically empty dining room, which means there's hardly anyone to stand between you and a room full of food. The brunch buffet includes just about everything one's heart could desire between the hours of 8 am and 2 pm. on a Sunday. Anything from Special K to prime rib, they've got it. I can't really say that everything was perfect, however, I did try practically everything, and the ability to do that alone, is pretty awesome in my book. Also, this place has a very old school somerville vibe- located over on the wrong side of the tracks, sitting in the lowly-lit dining room with somerville's retired citizens makes you feel like you're feel like you're part of something... something very old and original.

As they say in the famous jingle - the twin lobster special is something to see! and this is a 'what you see is what you get' kind of place. Decor is late 80's Holiday Inn, the wait staff are all 'lifers', and the food is no-nonsense. I would describe the clientele as a mix of Asians (who know where to get a good deal on lobsters), the blue-haired retirement crowd and large groups of local families. There is free parking in back, kick-ass popovers and oh - those lobsters. On a Friday, they were $16.99 for two pound and a quarters, but on some nights they are as low as $11.99! Every table seemed to have at least one order. They are hot and sweet but a la carte, We split lobsters and Prime Rib which came with potato, veg (canned peas - yuk) and an iceberg salad. This is no haute cuisine, but a great deal none the less.

There are 3 types of people that frequent this establishment. 1. OLD people (like 70 and older) 2. Asian tourists with lots of cameras 3. Boston area folk who want cheap lobster I'm am a member of the 3rd party. For some time I have heard of this wonderful place and finally last night my roommate, boyfriend, and I made the trek. Now honestly it's not much of a trek. It was pretty simple to get there from Boston. I have never been to Somerville before and was a little nervous about this dinner since we saw 1 bust of some sort with under covers down the street and some less than pleasant characters. But we delightfully found the restaurant and FREE parking lot! YAYYY! On our way in we were greeted by a train of elderly people slowly making their way to their THE RIDE mini bus. One walker with tennis balls, two walkers with tennis balls, three walkers with tennis balls. Finally the never ending geriatric caboose was all aboard and we walked in. We were seated right away. Roomie and I already knew we came for the lobster. We got steamers and a blooming onion to start and boyfriend ordered fried clams. The onion was pretty amazing. I mean its standard blooming onion but those in itself are just down right awesome. The steamers took some time to get out but we were in no rush. I was pleasantly amused by my surroundings. The cute old people out for their lobster dinners, the nice families, and of course the tables of Asian tourists with their damn cameras. Now look, I'm not saying if I went to another country I wouldn't take pictures of their food but honestly the amount of people holding up these small red creatures by their claws and smiling with peace signs and thumbs up throughout the whole meal is a little much. But we sat and watched and laughed. Anyone the steamers were delicious and sweet and not the least bit gritty. Oh and popovers. I didn't like these because they tasted like flour and water baked. No flavor but not sure if that's how they should taste. We go out lobsters. They were delicious. The boyfriends clams were good but a tad greasy. Overall for $85 bucks for steamers, onion, friend clams, and 4 lobsters - psh we will be back again. This place isn't the best restaurant in the greater Boston area but for $9.99 twin lobsters- I love you Mt Vernon. Oh- and to the person that says this place smells bad-- um that is the smell of death approaching some of its customers. No worries though just get take out.

Great, great great, and a real pleasant surprise. Discovering 2 great restaurants so close to each other, this and Taco Loco, on a street that looks somewhat run-down compared to Davis Square, has been one of the highlights of my summer. We heeded the advice of Will S. and came right at 5 for dinner. Sure enough the Saturday night crowd started lining up soon after. But our waiter was really attentive, service was fast, and the food was excellent. My fiance had the lobster special ($16.99 for 2 lobsters). The lobsters were perfectly cooked. We've had the twin lobster special at Whiskey's but Mt. Vernon's was far, far better. I had the prime rib which was not very flavorful but quite tender; served on the side were 3 large lobster raviolis, stuffed with fresh lobster and topped with a lobster claw. There was way too much to eat, and it was all good. We noticed none of the "localism" mentioned in other reviews and in fact the dinner crowd was very diverse. The dining room was clean, service was good, and prices were quite reasonable. The only hitch was that the popovers didn't start coming out until about 5:30, but we didn't come for the popovers. So we didn't miss them. So, take your date, take the family, whatever, this is a wonderful place to have dinner.

They often have the lobster specials. If you are living in Cambridge, Somerville area and don't want travel all the way to China town for cheap lobster. This is the place to have the cheap lobsters. Easy to find parking spots around boardway or just take the Sullivan orange line stop and walk 2 minutes.

Very tasty lobster just get it broiled and stay away from the stuffed one.

My reviews are straight forward and simple. Awesome Lobster for an amazing price. 2 Lobsters for $20. The best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. The fish was fresh, not frozen, and the batter was great. At $10 it was a bargain. Ate here with my wife, for $30 we were stuffed and quite pleased. Will go back every time I visit Boston.

This restaurant advertised in the May Scout dinner for two with a bottle of wine. When we arrived they refused to honor the deal. What poor management. First and last time we go to this restaurant.

If you're looking for a trendy, hip, modern place where you can see and be seen - this is not your place. It does nothing to please the eye. I felt like I was walking into a 24 hour diner attached to a Holiday Inn. It was dead inside. However, it's looks didn't stop us from giving it a shot. Jan was our waitress and she was great. She brought me out some popovers because I had never had them. Not bad - like huge crusty muffins. We ordered their twin lobster special. Again, similar to the appearance of the space... the food is no frills. The lobsters were about a pound each with no sides. They were boiled perfectly though and very tasty. For the price of $16.99 ($13.00 Sunday - Wednesday, $10.99 when they have web specials) you really can't ask for more. Next door is their adjoining bar which we were kind of kicked out to when we wanted more beer (I think Jan wanted to be cut - which I can understand from being a waitress. She was nice about it. The manager was not.) This place is kind of like a VFW complete with an older crowd and Keno. If you're nearby, don't judge a book by its cover when it comes to Mount V's.

I was working over the week in Boston and the local manager of our Boston office brought us to Mount Vernon. Great appetizers (stuffed mushrooms and crab rangoon) and the cone-bread things were awesome. Twin lobsters for $13 is a no brainer! not a desert guy so, I got nothing to say for it. Overall id definitely go back when im in the area!

They have very good value for the amount of food that you get. Prices are relatively low. They have a daily dinner for two that gets you a lot of food for usually around $20, which is a steal. The service can be spotty, a few of the waiters are usually pretty good and occasionally, there are a few that aren't. The restaurant itself looks like it's stuck in the 80's.

When I first walked in I was a little skeptical. It was small, no one was hardly there, & it reminded me of other places that are trashy. But I was oh so wrong. The food was DELICIOUS. I got the lobster bisque for a little appetizer. It was very creamy & tasted a bit too cheesy(?), but it was so good! For my meal I got the chicken, broccoli, & tortellini. It was the best! My friend got the turtle cheesecake as a dessert. Just to let you all know, I hate cheesecake, but this cheesecake was INCREDIBLE! I absolutely loved it! I advise everyone to go here! It'll change your life!

Every time I eat here I am never disappointed. I will be honest, the waitstaff are better than the food but don't get me wrong, the food is good too!

The Mt. Vernon is not overpriced AT ALL. In fact - they are one of the last basitons of a true family style home cooking independent restaurants in the area. I almost always get food at the bar area - it's quicker than waiting for a table when it gets busy for dinner (usually 5-7 PM when all the old folks come by). Make sure to check out the specials on the back of the menu. One that runs all the time is the twin lobster special for $12.99 - what a deal! The bar help is very knowledgable - Billy, who is usually there knows his stuff. Look for a mix of old folks, younger Somerville artsy folks, Charlestown townie people, and others ...

I'm so sorry to have to write this review but the Mt. Vernon just isn't what it used to be :( I had last been there about 5 years ago and remembered it fondly. Well this time around it was nasty. REALLY nasty. I ordered lobster bisque for an app which tasted like a cup of cheddar cheese, no lobster flavor whatsoever. I get it that not all places can put fresh lobster meat in their bisque but generally when you make a bisque broth you boil the lobster bodies to get that flavor, no flavor but cheese and cream in this one. So for my entree I ordered salmon that was topped with spinach, lobster, and hollandaise sauce. First off the salmon was definitely frozen, no question, pre-packaged frozen crap. The lobster that topped it was...weird....i don't know how else to explain it, rubbery and flavorless. Overall I thought the whole meal was just a gross disappointment. My friend with me ordered the prime rib, she thought it was just ok, not very flavorful. But later that night she was revisited by it and spent quite a bit of time in the bathroom. gross. I think the quality of food here has totally bottomed out and people just didn't seem to care. Skip it for sure. really, even if you have some nostalgia, just keep that nice memory. I would go to the 99, Applebees, Dominos, and possibly a hobo selling tacos on the side of the road before I ate here again.

One of the worse places I have ever eaten at! First the place is filthy, one of the worse I have ever seen. My family just had a bereavement dinner there this weekend after a funeral. The food was horrible. I have to say the service was OK can't fault them. I have eaten here in the past and never got a good meal after the third time I gave up on the place. Three times the prime rib was like shoe leather and cold! I only went this time because of the family and it's even worse than it ever was. The prime rib was over done and I got a slice about the size of a Micky D's Quaterpounder . I think i would have enjoyed that better. Do your self a favor and steer clear of this place there is so much better in Somerville and the surrounding areas I wish I could give this place - stars but they make you give at least one and it's undeserved!

Took the in-laws last night and was not very happy with quality of food. I have been there before for business meetings and once just on a whim and was pretty pleased with the food. Last night was not the case and I think it may have had more to do with the wait staff. Drink items were forgotten and I went my whole entree without anything to drink, despite the fact that the waitress kept saying that the drink was coming- no water either. I had the lobster salad roll, which was pretty inedible. The roll was a mushy grilled "ciabattaish" roll , not the usual New England grilled hot dog bun. There was a lot of warm, soggy lettuce lining the mushy bun. The lobster salad was overwhelmed by mayonnaise and celery that was not crisp. What made it awful was that it sat under the warming light for some time- to the point where the edges got that "mayonnaise tan." The onion rings were great- I wish I would have just ordered those to go with my imaginary beer. Father-in-law did the twin lobster dinner and it was just as advertised- that's a pretty good deal if you need some lobster and want to keep your ducats. We also had the scallop casserole, which was tasty- big scallops and a nice cracker crust and not mushy like the scrod. The baked scrod was covered with a mushy stuffing that seemed saturated with an oil that did not seem like butter- not great. All the cooked vegetables were cooked to please the dental work of elderly clientele. I have always known about how they cook their vegetables and have come to accept it. Sometimes I actually like soggy broccoli swimming in cheese- seriously. I would go back in the Winter for more standard fare like meatloaf or pork chops. If you need seafood other than lobsters - head elsewhere- maybe Out of the Blue in Davis Square. The other posts that indicated locals were treated differently seemed unfounded. One other bummer- our bread plates were covered with an oily film which made all the placeware suspect. Their awesome popovers deserve a clean plate. As for the decor, the Mount Vernon is a throw back, so don't expect high design in the dining space.

I had considered this restaurant to be a 3-4*, I had an incident where they glorified and exaggerated their July Special ... being lobster macaroni. The description statedthat it was LOADED with chunks of lobster.... It was far from that, i found one tiny piece of lobster and the taste was rather bland. When I brought it to the waitress's attention, she kindly stated that she would bring me out some lobster. She was then followed out of the kitchen by the manager Dave, who scolded me and insisted that it WAS LOADED shredded lobster and that I was wrong to complain. This left me with a very sour taste in my mouth... Also, what happened to the customer being right? He is even more unappealing than the dish that I had ordered...! I am even more angered by this situation when I found out that the manager who was there before, who I liked and saw weekly, was fired. All around, I will no longer be a regular here.

Well, let me see. Where do I even begin? Without going into too much needless squabbling here; just take my advice which is best summed up in two little words. Stay away. The waitresses were friendly enough, but it seemed they were always stretched pretty thin whenever I would go in there to eat with my ex. One evening, it took me about an hour to get the salad I ordered. The menu never really varies, and the quality of the food certainly isn't good enough to warrant the prices they're asking. If they paid as much attention to the food end of the business as they do the bar, they'd have to turn away business. I gather that because it's been around a long time, it's basically the "Cheers" for this end of Somerville where the local rummies can perch and pass as well as piss away the time of day. Oh. And did I mention the long black hair I found in my baked salmon? Not that it's any comfort, but at least it wasn't a short and curly. Eeeewwww.

This is a really good place to go for dinner. They are a little bit over-priced, but they have good food. They have a great roast beef dinner with potatoes and gravy and a vegetable. I have also been to a few functions here. They have a nice room for parties and they put out a great buffet.
