This review and rating is applicable to any family whose child has an allergy. My son has a dairy allergy, and so we were very excited to have a local restaurant that made non-dairy pizzas. Our first couple visits were great, with the manager consistently coming out to ask us details of our allergy. Unfortunately on our next visit, my son ended up having an allergic attack upon eating the first slice of his pizza. We gave him medication, and other than having an uncomfortable rest of evening, he was fine. But if you are familiar with allergies, this could result in much more severe reactions - so we were fortunate. We thought this incident might have been a fluke, and so tried two more times over the next several months, each time with my son having a near immediate allergic reaction. My conclusion is that while Portland Pie gives the appearance of having an allergy-friendly environment, I do not think the kitchen staff is properly trained in cross-contamination. I suspect my son's pizza was contaminated either during creation, in the oven with other dairy pizzas, or during cutting (it always amazes me how many restaurants produce a non-dairy pizza only to cut it with an unclean cutter). My family actually likes Portland Pie, but have obviously given it up based on experience. We never would have taken our son the first time if it didn't portray itself as allergy-friendly. But my guess is with a little training of the kitchen staff, they actually could live up to this portrayal, and we'd happily return.

As soon as we saw this on phantom we thought we need to try this place. Driving by it tonight it looked empty so we thought why Not tonight because we knew we wouldn't have to wait. It was dead all right we were some of the youngest people there. Our waitress came over and had no personality what so ever. Since it had taken a bit for her to come over we had already figured out what we wanted. We got the dough flight and the ricotta stuffed meatballs. The waitress seemed annoyed that we only wanted appetizers. The oil that came with the bread was awful. Even after stirring it there was no flavor other than what tasted like really old olive oil. Some of the pieces of dough were hard to tell what flavor they were supposed to be. The meatballs were awful and dry. The bathroom smelled very medicinal. The soap was from rite aid across the street that felt like it had been watered down for maximum bang. Also there was what looked like part of a dread lock on the floor in the hall outside of the bathroom. Phantom Gourmet is more often than not spot on but this wasn't one of them. I didn't even want to give one star. Disappointing considering the restaurant smelled so yummy upon entering.

I'm highly perplexed by the negative reviews of this place. We came on a Saturday night, the place was jumping with a small wait for a table and I was apprehensive that we would have a bad experience. Nothing could be further from the case. We kept it simple for a first visit. Ordered a small Cape Neddick Pizza, fresh mozzarella, pepperoni, red sauce, basil and cheese blend on a basil crust. We also did a build your own with sausage, mushrooms and kalamata olives on garlic crust. Both were amazing. I love the pepperoni they use which has a true artisanal feel. The sausage was full of fennel and flavor. I agree the Special Pie menu is a little confusing, until you realize it's organized by protein. Chicken, traditional pizza, veggie, Pepperoni and seafood. Then you choose a crust. Garlic, beer, wheat, basil or gluten free. We're looking forward to a return visit. Sunday specials, all 10 inch pizzas are $5.99 all day. Same special for Monday night and Thursday night football.

Went here because a few recommendations from friends on a Friday night. Tried to call ahead, which is something the place says it will do to seat you- but apparently not on a weekend. And by weekend, they mean Friday. Really loud, busy ambiance - had to speak at almost a shout to be heard. Rooms are bright and too spacious, which made it feel like you were going into a cafeteria with poor lighting (and soon you will find out, you'll probably get better food in a cafeteria than this place). Decided on a pizza, after all, it is the "pie company". Took a bit of time because the pizzas have ridiculous names which force you to read all of the ingredients. Also, they had a large selection of seafood pizzas, which are, in my opinion totally bizarre. Our waitress was training another one, and she apparently was teaching her how to give the worst service possible. Slow to refill drinks, took drinks that weren't empty, brought the wrong pizza, no silverware, super slow service... On to the pizza. Quite possibly the absolute, unequivocally, the WORST pizza I've ever had. It was essentially toppings on bread that was shaped like a circle. Crust - You select a crust - basil, beer, gluten free, and wheat. Went for for the basil and the beer. No distinct difference between the two. The crust was doughy, thick, bland, and it was flavorless and too chewy. For a ten inch pizza that costs 12 dollars, you expect you'll get something with a bit more panache. Sauce - both pizzas had red sauce, or so I was told - there was hardly any sauce. And the scraps that were there looked burnt. Toppings - they had some weird combos here. Toppings were chopped very small, and disappeared into the dough. Additionally, the amount of oil was excessive. It pooled on the top, and soaked into the crust. Big ole skip here. You're better off getting a frozen pizza from the grocery store! Really pricey, bad service, and bad food. Go for the beer, if anything.

I really enjoy Portland Pie and love the pizza so I was really happy to hear they opened a MA location! Been to this location twice now and gotten the gluten free pizza and it's great! One of my favorite gluten free crusts and I've never gotten sick from eating at a Portland Pie. I love all the options and the staff was really great too!

I went to PPC last night with a few friends. The place was fairly empty. Almost every item on their menu has a special name and they use a cartoony font. This forces you to carefully read the whole menu to find out what you want. I ordered the Cape Neddick which is basically a margarita pizza with pepperoni. It was actually pretty good. I was expecting to be disappointed, per a lot of the yelp reviews complaining about bread-like crust. Which, to an extent, was true but not nearly as bad as some said it was. We also got the green beans which were a poor copy of tgif's green beans. The lighting is too bright and makes you feel like you're in a hospital cafeteria. The service is just OK - we waited quite a while for our food. The prices are a little high for what it is. Overall, the pizza seems decent, but I will probably not be back.

I went here on a Friday night and they were very busy, probably because the food is great. However no one helped us or acknowledged us after 8 mins. I was completely embarrassed because I took a friend of mine that was in town here. We left... Off to find food somewhere else..

I've wanted to try this place for a while but was skeptical based on reviews. The menu is difficult to navigate because everything is named and you have to read the discription to find out what it actually is. Came today and we ordered the nor'easter pizza which is a buffalo chicken pizza. Switched blue cheese for ranch and got it on the garlic crust, which was amazing! The pizza itself was very tasty and you can tell they use high quality ingredients. The only downside was the chicken being very chewy. Definitely will come back and look forward to trying their lunch buffet!

Bartender Mark makes the best mixed drinks I have ever come across..... Seriously... The best. I think he makes each drink with love..Buffalo wings are lack luster due to having no deep fryer.

The pizzas has a great flavor, I think is a little overprice and also they should make sure the pizza will be size of the box. We paid for a large pizza but came really smalll inside a large box.

I am from Maine, bars up there are friendly, large, and rustic. This place imports that quite well (although I wish they'd ditch the drywall for some unfinished reclaimed wood, and a uneven handcrafted bar top). I've had 4-5 of they're speciality pizza and the Matinicus (cream cheese, prosciutto) and Pawtucket (chicken parm, meatball) are 100% sure things. Mug club member is bought, not earned. A small negative from the brew pubs of Maine, but the discounts make it worth while. Really appreciate the servers Pete (Th, Fri, Sat) and Nate.

My husband and I went in for lunch with our three daughters. We ordered two individual pizzas, one lasagna, baked mac & cheese and a kids chicken fingers. The pizzas were they were decent I wouldn't say they were great the chicken fingers my daughter got she loved the lasagna was absolutely disgusting the baked mac & cheese was just okay. The waitress check back once she never asked about the lasagna that pretty much went untouched it was also I believe 14.49, for one small piece of lasagna just sort of thrown together in a bowl We had received a $25 gift card and after the $25 gift card we still have a remaining balance of $82 it is definitely not a place to go if you want to have an inexpensive lunch. I wouldn't really say a place to go if you want delicious food either! We will not be back

First time at Portland Pie for lunch this week. Specious, cool, high ceilinged space with multiple dining areas and separate bar area. Tried the Arostook pie with bacon, red onions and beer crust. By the way, every pie comes with a choice of basic, whole wheat, beer and gluten free crust options. The sauce is sweet red tomato. The small pie was more than a satisfactory portion for one person. I ended up taking half the pie home for reheat. A hallmark of a really good pizza is one that tastes as well reheated a few days after sitting in the box in the fridge as it did in the restaurant. (If you eat a lot of chain pizza note that most turn to cardboard in a day.) Portland Pie passed the reheat test by a large margin above the rest.

Stopped in on a whim last Saturday. We stopped in around 6:30 and the place was busy. We were quickly sat in the pub area. The restaurant is very clean and has that perfect pizza joint feel but slightly more upscale. Service was great. The menu had a decent beer list, so craft beer enthusiast should be able to find something they like. Not into wine, but the list looked expansive. On to the pizzas. This place is great. We ordered two ten inch pizzas. The martinicus with beer crust and the pawtuckaway with garlic crust. These were delicious. I think would say the crust was the star, but both were all together good. A ten inch pizza is just perfect for one person. If you live in the area, and love pizza, this is a place worth checking out. I saw some pasta dishes come out of the kitchen. They looked good and the portions were large. I also saw some of the salads come out, but they looked terrible. Probably no big deal as no one is going here for salad. But, given how much attention to detail goes into the pizza it is disappointing that the same care does not go into the salads. Lastly, I think the prices on the menu are fair for what you are getting. In fact, they probably could charge more for these pies. They are that good.

I live in the apartments above Portland Pie, so it's convenient to order take out from there. But every single time without fail, the food tastes awful, and the order is completely wrong. I hadn't ordered take out from there in a couple of months thinking maybe I could give them a shot again... Why did I bother?

I really want to love this place. The food is always really good, but the service is totally hit and miss. I've been there at various days and times, different seasons, inside and out. Including take-out and even delivery! We just have not had a consistent level of service. We've even had occasion to have a pizza order go missing when we were in the restaurant! Please guys, I want to love the place!!! We love the beer and the location.

If you're local to Reading/Wakefield and you're looking for a vegan pizza fix, Portland Pie Co is the place to call. They offer Daiya cheeze on any pizza for a small inclusion fee, and have a section for strictly vegetarian pizzas (Obviously just make sure you tell them no dairy cheese). With a large variety of pizza crusts (go garlic go!), fresh toppings, and a great location right next to the commuter rail, you can't go wrong.

I want to preface this review by saying that I have visited this location before and haven't had a problem, but tonight, I was really unhappy with our experience. It took about 15 minutes after we sat before we were even greeted. Then, it took more than 40 minutes after placing our order before we got our food. I asked the waitress if there had been a problem with our order and she said the kitchen had been backed up, and promised to send a manager. The manager never came over. Knowing Louise's is right down the street and also offers a gluten free pizza, I don't think I'll be returning and suggest others think twice as well.

Keely, Pete and Mark are the best bartenders in town. They accommodate to the guest and make sure that everyone is happy. Due to their experience I am very please to return as a customer! Since Brett has left the company I feel more comfortable and stable to enjoy my atmosphere!!

if you have nothing better to do my dad did take out couple times they got it right. so that good reviews we been once for the buffet that was good and it good and smart thing to do. but this restarant gets one from me. we went in there wasn't anyone around it seems not busy. but then when we sat for one hour waiting for a pizza I ordered a sandwhich. the girl on the floor said it just her and her brother for help. there only two people in the kichen. what only two people in the kichten, I mean I was about to give and go home when it came out I told her we were very unhappy. I hope this place goes out business or they hire more people. either or I not going back. I'm sorry

Family outing. Was thinking green tomato but it isn't open in evening so went looking and close by is Portland pie. Really good. Had appetizers. Calzones and salad. All very good. Summer tea specials very good too. Recommended by all of us. Do have a buffet for lunch and $1 slice pizza after 9 pm. Go try it

Pizza was excellent with a wide, eclectic menu. Never been to a pizza place where you could choose from a list of crust flavors! Great beer selection including many from New England, and even some Meads from NH and ME. Great for kids, outdoor seating, huge bar. Will definitely be going back.

Never Eat Here! When this first opened we loved it. It was a great place to go with out two young kids, have good pizza, good beer, etc. It seems like it could be a gold mine since there are many families in town looking for the same thing. Lately when we've gone, the service has been incredibly slow and the management terrible. We went a month ago and they got our food wrong and it took forever. We went tonight coincidentally for "Pi Day". We arrived at 5:10 with our 2 and 4 year old, thinking we would beat any rush. Sure enough the restaurant was pretty empty. We put in our order, and waited, and waited, took a few laps with the kids, and waited, and waited, went to the bathroom, and waited. We remember that we ordered hummus and had to flag down our server to check on the status. Yes, hummus. It had been 40 minutes. You know, hummus, the stuff that you plop on a plate with some veggies that takes at most 1 minute to prepare. Our kids held up fairly well and ate some pita and veggies. At ONE HOUR of waiting, not once had a manager stopped by, and our server, while quite nice, had no clue when our food would come out. At an hour and fifteen minutes and no hope of food we walked out with hungry kids (and adults) and not a single thing comped. Never to go back. We've probably been 20 or so times since it opened 2 years ago and will never return. My wife and I have both waited tables and are reasonable people. This was the first time we've ever walked out of a restaurant. If you are looking to have a family meal at a restaurant, seek out any other place. Hopefully it will go out of business and a better managed restaurant will take its place.

The server was very inattentive pizza was just ok was looking forward to eating here but very disappointed specially with service may or may not try again was highly recommended by a friend not sure what went wrong here maybe hire more mature servers and cooks

Pizza is very good, salads and sandwiches are decent. Its a really great place to come to for a beer and slice of pizza. Be wary of other things on the menu though. Recently my group read a special deal wrong but we weren't aware of it...we asked the server about it and she said the deal was good. At the end of the meal she came back and said she was wrong and we had to pay full price. We thought she should have known so I spoke to the manager about it. He was not a pleasant fellow...basically said it was our fault even though six of us asked the server more than once about the deal because we all came in at different times. He was borderline rude but I held my ground (and my temper) and he honored the deal and said to never do it again..LOL..okay we won't try to get free pizzas from them again. It was ridiculous for him to blame us and I go out a lot so his behavior surprised me. ... The girls at the front are very nice though...best thing about the restaurant. I will go back but I will be very careful about what I order and be careful not to read the deals wrong.

As I live a short jaunt from this place, it's very convenient to visit. The service has been good every time we've come, and we usually don't have to wait that long for a table. It's decently priced and they have a wide selection of pizza. My personal favorite is the Crescent Beach, which is basically a cheeseburger pizza: mustard, ketchup, cheese (naturally), hamburger and lettuce, topped with diced pickles. However, I like a good amount of sauce and they don't put a lot on theirs. I've seen this with the other pizzas I've tried here as well. Their house salad has lots of fresh veggies that you don't usually see featured in one of those, such as broccoli. The balsamic dressing is kind of gnarly though. And I will say they have an excellent beer selection, there's a lot to choose from. The wine list, meh, not so much. But I enjoy coming here overall.

Been here a couple times before and pretty satisfied but went tonight with my family and it may have been one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. Arrived at 5:30 and got seated right away (great). Waited about 20 minutes for our drinks and to order. Ordered at 6:00 and didn't get food until 6:40!!!! We weren't the only ones that got poor service. When our food came, mine was warm at most. My wife's soup was warm, not hot. The kids had pizza and Mac & Cheese (Pretty sure if was Kraft out of the box). Their sides were fruit salad which I'm pretty sure were canned. We didn't find out until we were leaving that they were short staffed. That's something you mention in the beginning so customers know and can understand.

Believe the many reports about torturously long wait times with wait staff, though nice, never check any more than seating, food delivery then check. Took over an hour from sitting to pizza and salad. I suspect it's not the fault of wait staff so much, but management understaffs; something's not right here. We never went back for sit down service. I then tried take out once, twice, three times. Each time the cheese on top was burnt. Not a little or a lot brown. But 85% BLACK. That's more than a fair shot for any restaurant. Too bad, it is a good concept but they can't deliver.

I have ordered from Portland Pie once before and the pizza was amazing, recently we returned an ordered their Bar Harbor (Fresh scallops, smoked bacon, three cheese blend and a base of Pernod Alfredo sauce). My pizza consisted of minimum amount of bacon, not fresh scallops as they had a funk taste to them, and if your going to advertise a meat or seafood product on a pizza you should probably put more than just once scallop and bit of bacon a slice. Not only did the pizza look like a finished frozen boxed pizza but there was barely any ingredients they listed in the description on the pizza. Being a person who likes to get their moneys worth as the pizza was $20, I feel like I did not get any quality or quantity with this pizza. Most likely I will not return and would not recommend this to a friend because if you can't give me at the very minimum a quality pizza on a slow Sunday with no customers (from what I can see), how can you produce a fresh product in a fast paced environment?

  • Nick F.

Ordered takeout and got some cheese and meatball pizzas with beer, garlic and wheat crust, and also a gluten-free Moosehead pizza. Everyone liked their pizzas especially the family member who had the gluten-free Moosehead pizza. We could certainly taste the difference between wheat and the other two but the difference between garlic and beer wasn't as noticeable. The toppings tasted good and the Moosehead was loaded with them. Overall I'd say they make a solid pie but not the best. Unfortunately it's one of the most expensive pizza places I've been to so solid pizza - expense = 3 stars. I will probably order from here again when our family member who can't eat gluten visits since he did enjoy it and I haven't found many options nearby yet.

My family and I love coming here! The signature pizzas are wonderful and they always have different lunch specials during the week. This is a great spot for the whole family, lots of booths and tables. The bar area looks nice, but I'm always here with the family so we haven't checked that out yet. They also deliver to the neighboring towns which we love! Get the frequent buyer card - you earn rewards in no time for free food!

We ate at the restaurant a few weeks ago and thought the pizza was really good. We ordered a pizza for take-out tonight. It was horrible! Crust was completely soggy. I called to speak to the manager and told her that the pizza basically inedible. She asked if we wanted to pick up another, which we did not. She didn't offer any restitution (maybe a gift card for future use?). Not satisfied and will not return.

Gluten free pizza on the menu, but unfortunately it comes with some type of vegan cheese that left us rather confused. Is there something in the regular non-vegan cheese that contains wheat or flour? Our server was nice, but not able to really provide much in the way of actual knowledge so we just avoided the whole pizza scene. We ended up with 2 salads, both were really subpar. Both featured huge hunks of vegetables as if the people in the kitchen were too lazy to actually chop the veggies into sizes that would fit in a human mouth. Sure the Red Sox game was on that night, but you can chop and watch/listen at the same time, can't you? I don't know that we'll be back to give it a second chance, but since we're looking to move to Reading some day we might not have a choice.

Although Reading has some great pizza shops, Portland Pie Co. has quickly become a regular in our rotation. The pizzas are always 100% perfect with a variety of crusts to choose from and the salads are also very tasty. I tried the pretzel crust this past week and it was just great. They do a good job of adding some seasonal flavors and do a good job on everything. The staff are always very pleasant and it is just a great restaurant to have in our rotation and I have never been disappointed.

We ordered a couple of pies. We had the beer crust with vegan cheese. I ordered extra sauce too because I like a lot of sauce. It came out with just an adequate amount of sauce. I like the consistency of the crust - its chewy/doughy which is my preference. Fret not you thin-crusters, they do have a thin crispy option too. The downside is that the crust is an oil fest. It was straight up BP Gulf Of Mexico. It's needless. It's messy. It doesn't really add any flavor or texture. We also had a wheat crust pie with their regular cheese blend. The dough was roughly the same as the beer -- doughy/chewy but slathered in oil. I wanted to like this place more. However I will try it again. Basically the food was two stars but the great service and the option of daiya vegan cheese brings it up to three stars.

I ordered food looking for a relaxing Sunday meal with my family. While it's always a little disappointing for the kids when fries aren't offered as a side with the kids meals, it's not so unusual. I was given a few options and chose fruit cups. We ordered basic stuff: a calzone, lasagna, and a couple of chicken finger kids meals. About half an hour later, the food arrived. The kids meals were three chicken fingers, with no sides. Not the fruit cups I specifically requested when given options, and not any dipping sauce for the chicken fingers, which were also burnt. Just three burnt chicken fingers in a Styrofoam container. When I ran outside to catch the delivery guy, he asked whether I wanted him to come back with the sides, as if I would simply be satisfied with my kids going hungry tonight. "Yes," I told him, "please come back with the sides." He came back a half hour later, forcing me to figure out what to feed me kids while my food got cold. So much for a relaxing easy meal on a Sunday night... Although I can't say I missed much in eating the food while it was hot. The calzone and lasagna were both burnt and fairly tasteless. I'm obviously never ordering from here again. The food was overpriced ($48, including $6 for three burnt chicken fingers), the service was bad, the food was burnt, and wouldn't have been good even if cooked right. I'm not exactly sure how they intend to stay in business, but it certainly won't be with my help.

Honestly, I am SO sad more than anything. I've been dying to try this restaurant because I've heard such great things about the food. Let me start by saying the food is fantastic- the pizza is so flavorful and we also very much enjoyed the lobster sliders. Unfortunately, the service was so bad it teetered on awkward at numerous points during the meal. Besides waiting to be acknowledged for way too long, the waiter at one point even moved an EMPTY beer bottle to the other side of the table without removing it or asking if we wanted anything else to drink. We couldn't hear one word he said. I felt like I wasn't even at a restaurant, but rather waiting in a pizza take-out place which I now know I should have done and saved money, time and a lot of aggravation. When you go out to eat, you should feel relaxed and have a positive experience. Unfortunately that was not the case and it is such a shame because the food, especially the pizza, was great.

Was a little leary with a 3 star rating but stopped in to check it out. PIZZA IS OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS! I had the lobster topping pizza, craving it again already! Service was a little slow other and not sure they know exactly what they are doing, but it is a fairly new establishment in town. Nice addition to Reading.

Walked in with a friend and was greeted by nice service and seated. Giant menu with tons of options made it pretty complicated and everything had crazy names, so you had to read the whole description. I ordered a ribolita soup which was very good. We also ordered a cheese pizza and Caesar salad to pick on. Our food arrived but no silverware or napkins to be found. When we asked for our napkins and got them the pizza was very good, thin and soft. However the pizza was very greasy on top and bottom! It took about two napkins to take the grease off one piece! After eating here I felt very ill, like the pizza stuck to my stomach..

Portland Pie was attractive when it first opened about a year ago. I went back there a couple of weeks ago and was very disappointed. The menu still had a bunch of strange fish pizzas and blueberry beer that just don't work around here. The vibe changed from busy and vibrant to slow, boring and filled with toddlers. I felt like I was in Chuckie Cheese - not what I was up for on a Friday night. Portland Pie needs to look around the area and see what successful restaurants are doing and change it up fast, cause right now this place is really sucking. Expand the menu and add more local craft beers. Do something fast or your not going to last.

Disappointing nite out. It's a clean open space with friendly, though inexperienced, staff. We were seated at 7:20 on a Sat night. They were full but not packed. We got our drinks after about 10 minutes, and placed our orders. Then - nothing for about 30 minutes. No offers for refills, no water at all, no silverware, no condiments. The food finally comes, and I'll admit the pizza is awesome. All the non-pizza stuff was low quality, though. Gigantic pieces of wimpy. romaine in the salad that have to be cut to be manageable (and a chunk of a cucumber end that was meant for the disposal), low budget chicken tenders and cafeteria grade frozen fries. Tough beef tenderloin tips. And a nice long hair in one of the pizzas. Ew! On the plus side we ordered a late order of ravioli for an unhappy child and it came quickly. Also their website clearly described a beer special that started today, but neither the server or host knew anything about it and did not investigate, so we did not partake of it. Unlikely to do more than take out pizza from here if anything at all. They need some time to train their staff and raise the standard of their non-pizza menu.

If you need a quick pizza because you are too tired to cook, I suppose this place will do. Do yourself a favor, however, and stay away from everything else. They use the cheapest, nastiest green house tomatoes with the consistency and flavor of racket balls. No restaurant with a morsel of self respect would use those abominations. I made a decision not to ingest anything besides alcohol from there when they served me with a slab of raw chicken on the top of my salad. It was sliced, so why they've let it leave the kitchen like that is beyond me. I'd like to boycott them completely, but they are close enough to my house for me to crawl home with wine goggles on.

Do not waste your time... especially with 5$ pizza night. We were served several undercooked pizza slices (doughy) with subpar chicken. I like to give places a second sometimes a third chance but I am done with this place. Harsh as this review may be, I just don't care to waste my money on food that has failed my expectations 3 times. The concept of what they do is awesome and I am sure the original is great but this particular location... not so much.

VEGAN PIZZA. IN READING. !!!! I have been dying for some not made by me cheesy vegan pizza since Peace O' Pie closed last year (moment of silence). They have Daiya vegan cheese here, which is the gold standard as far as I am concerned. The pizza here can be a little bit greasy. Mine (Old Orchard pie with the vegan cheese) was just a little greasy and my boyfriend's Old Port (pepperoni) with regular cheese was really greasy. He said it was still good, though. When we dined in, we sat in the bar area and the service was great. Pick up is quick and easy too. Portland Pie Co. has made it in our restaurant rotation for sure.

Went here a few weeks ago and can't believe I didn't know about this place before!!! Food was super delicious. Great pizza and apps. Great selection of beer. Place is a lot larger inside than expected. Definitely a good spot to host a group or function. Can't wait to go back. Definitely found my new favorite place for pizza!!!

Been in the restaurant once...service was decent, nothing special I guess. However, had delivery and was very disappointed. Had to call to check up on the order since it was already over 45 mins. It wasn't until over an 1hr later that we received 2 pizzas and an order of hot wings. Pizza was fine, but the wings were unacceptable....they were still RAW!. Called to complain and the manager just said that "we were probably just rushing to get the order out and forgot to cook it all the way". No need to say more. Other people may enjoy this place, but from this experience, they won't have our business any longer.

The pizza here is delicious. I loved the beer crust. We had the cape Neddick and the barbecue chicken pizza. The cheesy garlic sticks were delicious too. The server was decent at his job, but the hostess sat us at a dirty table that has not been wiped down. That's why I can't give it five stars. Good food, but they need to work the kinks out with the service.

I was REALLY expecting this place to blow my socks off for some reason. My family ordered the Shipyard Special(w/ tomato sauce & all veggies), a Great Diamond(another all-veggie pizza), and an order of chicken tenders all for $56. I went there to pick it up, and thankfully it was ready to go. I wouldn't want to stand in that hectic restaurant for any longer than needed. I'm not hard to please when it comes to pizza. Really, as long as the sauce and cheese have good flavors then chances are I'll love it. Sadly the pizza here wasn't impressive. I thought it was really bland and the worst part; the toppings were over-cooked on both pizzas. Nothing tastes worse than burnt brocolli. :X The chicken fingers tasted like breadcrumbs.

I returned to Portland Pie after several months. The issue of the noise level at least in the front dining room was muted by large black fabric posted on the walls. I ordered a salad which ONLY contained 4 slices of chicken, 1 huge hunk of tomato, enormous slices of purple onion, and two small pieces of broccoli. The salad mix looked wilted! The dressing was more a dip than a dressing. Very disappointed in the prep, food and service.

Popped by here for a hungover early lunch last weekend. While it was okay, something was lacking. Service was good and food was good. My friends that are Portland Pie Co. maniacs said that this isn't up to typical Portland Pie standards. My biggest issue was my just warm enough food. I like it to be piping hot. It was good enough for me to give it another try but I wasn't wowed.

Epic fail. Received a menu in the mail and tried delivery. 2 hours after ordering, food arrived. Overcooked & cold. Breadsticks are a pizza crust with cheese. Nachos so over baked they arrived in one stuck together heap...couldn't be salvaged even reheated. Spinach dip was way over salted. Chicken fingers were ok, but they didn't deliver our sauce. We'll be tossing the menu.

Ordered a sandwich and salad. Food came out quick, salad was fresh and crisp and loved the dressing. The sandwich was perfectly toasted and I liked that they used real slices of turkey not just some deli stuff. Reasonable prices, attentive service, great food.

It's all about the dough with this place. I ordered a Shipyard Special for takeout with garlic dough. Overall I thought the pizza was delicious and pretty much what I would expect from a pizza joint. I was confused by the low ratings people gave this place, until I read the reviews and realized that human beings are just silly. 1. If you don't want greasy food, you probably shouldn't be eating pizza, it's like one of the main ingredients. 2. It's a pizza place, chances are it's not going to be a dining experience like going to Capitol Grille. Overall I would definitely recommend giving it a try, definitely a type of pizza to get when you are tired of ordering the traditional pepperoni.

A very frustrating place to eat. It's completely dead on a Saturday night yet service is non-existent. The food options are very limited for a pub/pizza place and not anything worth noting. There are so many waiters and waitresses walking around but there's barely any customers in the place and the few that are there are all but ignored. Don't see this place lasting much longer and the management has no one but themselves to blame.

Co to Bertucci's instead. The crust's are cookie cuttered and processed, we got 3 pies and the toppings lacked flavor and were watery. The service is good and the atmosphere corporate standard. We live close by and see no reaseon to return or for take-out or delivery. Plenty of better pizza places about.

Saw this place on Phantom Gourmet and looked interesting. Not familiar with the area, it wasn't the easiest place to find. Started off with a special sweet potato and smoked cheddar dip with " biscotti " which was their pizza dough which was more like bread. Do us all a favor and go back to the drawing board on this one. Served in a bread bowl, the flavor was literally nonexistent. Even if it had brown sugar or something to give it SOME kind of taste, it would have been better than what this was. All of the pizzas are named after places in Maine and I went with the Aroostook County with chicken, bacon, tomatoes with added jalapenos on a garlic crust drizzled with ranch dressing. Excellent job on this. For all the flavor the dip was lacking, it more than made up for it on the pizza. My only complaint was that the crust was soft, almost like a bread consistency than a typical dough. I took with me an order of onion crusted green beans and the spicy dip that came with that was outstanding. Joe was the barkeep who kept the drinks and conversation flowing like a good bartender should, which is good because they do let you know that they do take a while for the food to be cooked and they weren't kidding, but in the end, it was worth it.

Pros: Very nice atmosphere day or night. Restaurant is clean and it does feel like it adds to the "little-cozy Reading experience". Cons: food is dull. I've tried this place twice with my wife and tasted her meal both times. The menu is well written and does a good job convincing you that you're about to try something great. Then the food comes, lackluster. Its not bad, its simply lackluster. All ingredients just melt into this cud and it ends up being average. As for the wait staff, they seem to be stuck in second gear at best. You will end up leaving satisfied with the restaurant as an event in a great spot instead of satisfied thanks to a great dish. If you're gonna write up such vivid descriptions in your menu, I want you to deliver on it. By the way, if you are visiting Reading and If you want a simple and delicious pizza choke full of flavour, then head a block away to Colombos. It's a tiny joint but their dough is very good and their calzones and pizzas are delicious. It's a traditional pizza menu but executed very well.

Welcome to Boston Portland Pie! I will buy out their lease for pennies on the dollar. If they make it through 2014 I will be surprised! Food is all frozen, not even hot when served. Maybe only the pizza is all they make from scratch. Service it good, employees are nice. But don't try to push out frozen product and expect to survive. What were you thinking when you picked this town as a location? Must be a privately held company because no real corporate executives would allow this business practice.

We ordered half a dozen pizzas here for a party recently. Nothing too crazy as it was a children's birthday party, so it was mostly straight up plain cheese pizza. One pizza had a "garlic" crust and some pepperoni for the sole ingredient. I have to agree with the other reviewer who called out the doughy, cardboard like consistency. The price point is also way off compared to their competitors in Reading. I am going to return to a local joint, and stick to what I know is already proven.

  • Me B. M.

Uhmmmm....Hands down the worst pizza I have probably ever had. No idea how this place is a chain with pizza as its specialty. The crust is just awful, somewhere between a soggy biscuit and cardboard. It did not come off as a yeast dough, more like a greasy quick bread made with baking soda. Maybe the dough was just sitting around a long time or frozen...I dunno. And the service felt like forced happiness from a weary and depressed staff. Which probably explains why multiple staff members had to notice the rotten orange slice in my beer...and not care. And I do not mean a little marred. I mean ROTTING. Weird. There are plenty of places in Reading with good to great pizza. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

First dine-in after a few delivery meals. All-in-all I was pretty happy with the whole ordeal. Seated quickly on a Thursday night, server attentive and efficient despite the high-level of noise. Barely adequate beer selection, it could be a bit more diverse, but suited what I needed! App was the Loaded Baked potato fries. Fresh cut fries with cheese, bacon, chives, sour cream. Wow. Ãœber good. Entree for the princess was the sausage and broccolini ravioli and I ordered a thin crispy nor'easter. Here's where it gets a bit complicated. The wife's entree obviously sat out waiting for my pizza to finish which pretty much killed it. Had it been served "fresh" we'd be having a different conversation. The Pizza. Excellent. No question. BUT!!!!!, the thin crispy is only available in a minimum of 14" (they offer smaller pizza but not thin and crispy) which left a lot of leftovers, no problem I'll eat it again, it was awesome. I went with the Garlic crust, and against some of the other reviews, it was fantastic. Buffalo chicken, bacon, and some other goodies (see pic) piled on this dough was the shiznit. No desert as we had gorged to capacity but we'll definitely be back to give it a shot. All In all, make the trip if you're local, if not, wait a but while they work out the bugs of timing the entree's.

Get the seafood stuffed 'shrooms! The bar was not that crowded but the two 'tenders were running around like they had no idea how to triage the taps. We scored bar seats but waited without drinks for 10 minutes before we were called to our table drinkless. The whole place has a cold and uninviting feel to it although it makes a good attempt to be the opposite. I think it had a lot to do with the bright lighting. Food came out quickly and looked great but was a bit bland overall. Our pizza was on the basic side (spinach, ricotta, hamburger, mozzarella) but each of the main toppings tasted raw - not raw as in uncooked, but raw as in unmarried. The pie could have used a dash of salt during prep, or the beef should have been seasoned or something. We'll give it another try but were fairly disappointed by our first try.

I'm not quite sure why this place has 1 star, but I loved it. It's great place where they have unique choices of pizza. They have unique toppings and you can make your own. I would probably go here specifically for pizza, however their sandwiches and pasta dishes looked good too. They also have a cool mug club where if you drink enough beers you get your own mug that stays at the restaurant! This place is worth a try, if you don't like go down the street to Anthony's.

  • Peg C.

This place itself is nice, and the servers are friendly, but do not waste your time going here if you want good pizza. There are too many much better choices in the area. First of all, the pizza was not only overcooked, but it was served cold. I love crispy pizza, and I like it when the cheese has some brown on it. This pizza was burned. The toppings are far away from the edge of the crust, which, by the way, is seriously too thick. Reminds me of the cake-like consistency of Domino's or frozen rising crust pizza. I will not be returning.

After working all day in the middle of a blizzard I didn't want to go home and cook, my last client of the night told me about this little gem. I am really not big on pizza at all, and do not like anyone's red sauce but my own. I ordered the Great Diamond with the Basil crust and it was really really good..

  • Allie I.

We've only gotten the pizza here, but we think it is great. The big plus for me is the gluten free pizza - which is really good. Brian W. below mentioned the vegan cheese but you probably just had a confused server as the regular cheese is fine for gluten free. The ambiance is fine - it works for us since we have a toddler, it's definitely more of a "family" place. The service is really rough. They need to work on it. I'm dropping two stars just because every. single. time we've been there (8 times?) the service is laughable. especially the people on the phone and the hostess' and the bartenders - our waitress' have been pretty good though... We keep going back because the pizza is delish despite the service!

I have to say that I am a huge fan of beer dough. So tasty! I love that the Portland Pie Co offers it and are pretty close to me. They have a great selection of pizzas, and it looks like they change up their selection based on the season which is always nice. This location is relatively close to me so we decided to check it out. Probably our mistake picking Valentine's Day to visit because it was super packed. We ordered pick-up and got there after the stated wait time of twenty minutes and it still took about fifteen minutes beyond that for the pizza to be ready. The area where people were waiting to be seated and waiting to pick up their food was so crowded. I was beginning to feel uneasy with so many packed in and pushing to get to the front. Not a fun experience. The pizza was finally ready and for some reason they take the time to open the box and show you it before you can take it. I'm actually not a fan of that and not sure why they would do that as it a. takes up more time, especially when you're behind a person that's ordered five pizzas and b. I don't want my pizza exposed in the crowded waiting area. Yuck. Anyway, the pizza was pretty expensive for the size. I think it was over twenty six dollars and nothing special. I enjoyed the beer dough but didn't think it was anything better than I could get at several other places for less money. I don't think we'll be returning any time soon.

I keep getting pizzas here because it's the only place I can get one with vegan cheese closer than Cambridge. The dough is ALWAYS undercooked, such a disappointment for an otherwise tasty pizza! However, I've had decent luck when I order one without sauce and "well done." Don't let this location put you off the others; the one in Nashua is great.

Went out to dinner for "Pi" day and the place was slammed since every personal "pie" was $3.14 until 5pm. The kitchen was obviously slammed and couldn't catch up but I suppose thats what happens when you see people walking away with 10+ take out pizzas each! Regardless you could see the wait staff was doing their best to keep their tables happy in spite of the 1hr+ wait for food. It obviously wasn't their fault and sadly they suffered through the incredibly rude patrons (who left bad to no tips). Everyone that came through the doors was warned of the wait time but somehow many still demanded faster service. Some patrons walked out and the obnoxipus patrons screamed at management or were just rude to everyone. Ya it was a wait but 1) you can afford to go out to eat so you'll survive, 2) obviously any place running a promo like that will be backed up, 3) you probably got most of your food comped, 4) have a drink, relax enjoy your company and enjoy the amazing pizza when it finally arrives.

The place is really nice and very clean. The food and the service are very good, too. I had vegetable lasagna, but meat sauce lasagna was the best. Last night we had moosehead beer dough pizza and buffalo chicken wings. Very good! My kids said it is their new favorite local pizza place.

I am so excited that PPC has come to Reading!!! PPC was a frequent stop for me when I lived in Portland, ME. I love the pizza and they have great service; an all around great place to get an excellent gluten free crust!! I didn't feel like I was missing out on taste at all!

My 4 stars are mostly based on the food, not the service. A group of 13 of us from work went to Portland Pie yesterday as a farewell lunch to a co-worker. We made a reservation the previous day, but when we showed up, on time, they still had to set the table up for us. We ordered drinks and then lunch. We each ordered an individual pizza, which we did not receive for over an hour. We were not forewarned that our lunch would take that long, or updated on when our meals would be ready during the entire duration. As a result, I don't think this could not be a lunch spot for us, due to how long the lunch ending up taking. Thankfully, when we received the pizzas, they were all accurate to our orders, and tasted very good. However, the pizzas were luke warm, not hot, although this didn't take away from how delicious they were. The manager signed us up for an executive membership, so we could earn points when visiting or getting delivery. We order a few dinners a month, so we will definitely add Portland Pie to our list. I will have to update my review once we see how the take-out/delivery is.

Pizza is very solid the thinner crust are more desireable IMO. the Garlic and Basil crust are very good. the other stuff on the menus are good not great but good and worth going in for. again pizza is what they do best and is really are you need to know. come early or make reservations on Thurs-Sat.

Ive been here a couple of times now. I wanted to give them a fair shot with the review. I have gotten the pizza and sandwiches. Both are just okay. The pizza at Bertuccis, Sal's and Regina are all much better. As for the sandwiches, they are just okay. I got some toasted grilled chicken sandwich and it was seriously like something you would get at Quiznos or subway. I wish I was exaggerating but that is exactly what it was like. Its not like the chicken was freshly cooked and sliced and put on top of the sandwich. They were little crumbled pieces of chicken that were obviously already cooked and just toasted. That said, it is a good atmosphere. They are prices appropriately. Service was just okay. I will go again because I live so close but honestly, I would rather go elsewhere.

My wife and I love Portland Pie. The crust is unbeatable on their pizzas. Gotta love the Noreaster with beer crust! Only reason they don't get five stars is that the service is only so-so, but I'll chalk that up to being a somewhat new location.

Went here with a large party and it was a disaster from the minute we were seated in the back room. It was so loud with another group I honestly could not even decide what to order. The pizza was awful--I am wondering how they can be a pizza chain. Other selections are either strange, unappetizing combinations or normal, 99-style food. The manager was nice but I would have rather had my order taken than introduce my entire family to him. To be fair, it was a polite gesture but it took super long to put in our orders and get them. Hopefully it is because the staff is still figuring everything out. On that note, the majority of the staff members are local kids ~high school age and eh I guess I'm not a fan of that. Overall - the service might improve but unless an overhaul is performed on their menu, I won't be coming back.

We ordered delivery tonight and it was a terrible experience. Got a "crispy" thin crust pizza and the downeast sandwich. The pizza was was anything but crispy and the sandwich had a small amount of what could have been canned chicken. 2 stars because it was delivery but the damage is done, wouldn't risk trying in the restaurant.

We got the take out menu in the mail so we decided to order because everything look really good. So I ordered the Eagle Ridge sandwich and my girlfriend ordered the chopped salad and a personal artichoke and black olive pizza. First of all my sandwich was missing the steak all I got was peppers and onion that was it. My girlfriend salad was just lettuce two pieces of tomatoes and that was it and the pizza was just tasteless I was very disappointed with this place I wanted to like it but it was a let down never again will I order from this place.

Three visits for me. I'm surprised to hear some reviewers didn't like the pizza. I consider myself a pizza aficionado and I think the pizza is outstanding. I particularly like the pizza dough. If you like Domino's or typical white generic pizza dough then you might not like their dough because it is more flavorful and chewier. The reason I can't give them a five star is because of the noise. I'm not sure I've ever been in a noisier restaurant. Not sure what causes this. there are some brick walls, but you'll find yourself shouting to be heard in there. Lastly, a minor annoyance. There is no smartphone connectivity in there. I've tried ATT&T and Verizon and can't get a signal. I was given their restaurant password and even with that no wi-fi.

Tried this place for dinner despite seeing the bad reviews here. The restaurant is clean, has a nice decor and seems like a fun place to hang out with friends. It is slightly loud since they have a TV and no booths for privacy, but there are a few rooms so you could always request a quieter table. I went for dinner, 4 adults and 2 kids. We were seated right away and the waitress was friendly. She brought the wrong drink out from the bar but we didn't mention it. We ordered appetizers. Wasn't impressed with the chicken tenders, but the nachos and baked potato fries were good. One of us ordered pasta for dinner and it came with a good size salad. The rest of us ordered pizzas. The pizza was greasy as many of the other reviews mention, but mine wasn't bad (I got hamburger and onion). The others were said to be "okay" by the others (buffalo chicken pizza and one with cheeseburger toppings). When it came time for dessert, the kids wanted ice cream. There were two flavors listed, vanilla and another (forget the name). The waitress had to go ask what was in the second kind. Seems strange to not know, since there were only two flavors. She was nice enough to take a group picture if all if us, but took 20 minutes for us to hunt her down after to pay the bill (and this was just giving her the cash so that it wasn't left out on the table for all to see). So, it was a fine experience, but they do have some work to do in terms of training their staff.

Visting friends and they suggested we try this newer eat-in pizza place. Ordered via phone for pickup and the person answering seemed distracted as I had to repeat my order. When I asked the total he quoted me $2 more than I had correctly calculated. I asked him to re-calculate and he seemed put out. We ordered two pizzas, one was a speciality 14" pizza with lobster and scallions @ $19.99, not cheap but tasted pretty good with the garlic crust. The other was a 16" white pizza with spinach and garlic added to garlic crust ($19.49). Pizza was very well done, with the spinach very well done/ burnt, but plentiful. Could not taste any garlic, probably not added but paid for. Mediocre pizza for $40.

Food is....okay, but the service was unbelievably slow. Ducked in for a quick dinner. Ordered the nachos which were tasty- but they took 30 minutes to arrive and there weren't many people in the restaurant. Sandwiches took another 45 minutes. Won't be back

This place is horrible!! I walked in and said good evening to the hostess. She must of thought I said, you have ugly children, based on how she treated me. I was told that if I wanted to wait it would be 10-15 min. I said no problem even though I could see the place was more than half empty. After a couple of minutes she said that the wait was shorter than she expected and she would seat us now. The dining room only had about 6 other parties at 7 PM (another ominous signal) Oddly enough many of the tables had plates with partially eaten food, the place looked like Jamestown, were everyone disappeared in the middle of a dinner. The staff must of thought the dinners would be returning because many of the tables remained dirty during our time there. I was glad that the place was mostly empty because the noise level in the dinning room rivaled a NASCAR rally. Given that the place claims to be a gourmet pizza parlor I could not wait to dive into one. The pizza was absolutely the worst pizza I have ever tasted. As a reference, Chucky Cheese had been the worst I ever tasted since a kids birthday party in 1993. Chucky Cheese is Gourmet compare to this sampling. I made better pizza when I was 6 with my sisters easybake oven. Go to any grocery store and pick a frozen pizza at random, it will be superior to the pizza here. The salads are no better. The Cobb salad was unwashed greens, hard tomatoes with the nice green slime around the seeds, a smelly egg with the green trim around the yoke, and topped off with about 2 pounds of petrified bacon bits and thinly sliced cardboard they contend is chicken. The plates and cups they serve this stuff on is the same plates I had in my college dorm room. I placed the alleged tomatoes around the rim of the plate, which my server noticed and said " Oh you don't like tomatoes", I said, "no I love Tomatoes". Soon our table would join the other Jamestown tables, we were ready to leave in the middle of the meal. This place should be out of business soon, I hope a nice restaurant moves in.

A Reading resident I've tried Portland Pie a few times and so desperately want to love it. But I can't. Have yet to get a take out order correct. Eating in the restaurant improves the order accuracy. Very stingy with the toppings. I literally counted one slice of pepperoni per slice of pizza. As for all restaurants everywhere this time of year, give up the fresh tomatoes on your salads. Pale, hard and mealy.

Ordered a 16 in. Old Orchard w/ Vegan cheese with beer dough and it was quite delicious. I am very pleased to have a decent pizza place that offers vegan cheese in the area. The pizza was on the expensive side, but it was quite yummy. We got take out so I cannot comment on the restaurant service, but the place looks really nice. Regarding the dough being soggy in another review, I am pretty sure that the dough is supposed to be more spongy than crispy. They do offer a crispy pizza which I did not try. I really liked the dough, even though it is different than a crispy pizza that you may find at a local italian pizza joint.

We ordered a cheese pizza with beer crust. The pizza would have been pretty good if not for the over the top saltiness of the crust. I don't know if it was just a batch that wasn't made correctly because this is our first time ordering their pizza, but definitely too salty. Cheese was good, sauce was good, delivery came on time, no other issues :)
