More like 3.5 stars. I usually get the two-way ($18) with fried whole clams and scallops. Instead of fries and coleslaw for the sides I get rice pilaf and onion rings. The portion size is pretty good, enough to share with another person. Sometimes the size of the seafood varies. But most times the scallops and clams are plump and well cooked. The lines during the summer can go out the door but moves pretty quickly. The last time I went they only had one person working the register at rush hour. So service could be improved. But otherwise once you place your order you don't have to wait too long before they call your number. It's nice to sit outside during the summer if you can find a table. I don't like sitting indoors when it's hot though because they don't have any AC. This is one of my go-to places for fried seafood.

Went to Boston for a weekend trip and was lucky enough to score a seat here. The place is usually packed not just because of the great seafood but because it's literally right next to the beach. We got the fried platter which was pretty tasty and big enough for 2 people. At only $21 that's a great deal. We also got the clam chowder but that was really basic, definitely skip that and just focus on the good stuff. The clam box also a great variety of alcoholic drinks. We went early in the day so we didn't drink but this would be a great spot to just relax and take in he beach with some good alcohol and fried food.

The Clam Box is excellent. When I see some of the reviews that bad mouth this place I wonder what the motives are. You get what you pay for and if someone thinks they can eat better seafood for half the price then either go there or just stay home. The portions are huge and the quality is tops. Great location across from the beach and worth the drive from anywhere. One gripe I have with Yelp is the comment section that asks if the review was "Funny, Useful or Cool". They should have another for some of the chronic complainers who are never satisfied or are looking for a free meal. That should be "Useless". Yelp won't do it, though.

When at Wolly beach, do as most people from the Quink do. Indulge at The Clam Box and then some more... This place has been there forever and has held on to it's own, despite the competition around everywhere. Which is a win win actually for everyone. I am not a big one on fried anything really. But when I do crave some fried seafood, I do not even blink an eye and wonder where or who or when or why. It is The Clam Box. Period. They are good. Their food is unpretentious. The staff works hard for the money. And it is money so very well spent. Agreed the food goes straight to your waist line if you make this your bi weekly hangout. But given how long a summer we all get to enjoy (sorry, that was a bad joke - I admit!), this place is my once a month worthy go to spot to get myself whatever I fancy and enjoy it under the sun at Wolly beach, bang on the boardwalk watching the sun set or sometimes in the privacy of my own beach - at home. It all depends on time and mood really. Here are my favorite things to get that I have enjoyed over the years and keep getting them over and over again: Fried food boxes: Clams (both whole and strips), Calamari, Oysters, Clam cakes, pop corn shrimp. The Seafood platter is out of this world and worth every single bite of the yummy goodness. Dinner plates: Steak tips (My Favorite!), Wing Dings, Buffalo wings App sides: Onion rings, Buffalo wings & wing dings, Clam chowder, shrimp chowder Rolls: I can go for any of their seafood rolls and really don't have a favorite. If I have to pick only one - it would be the Whole Clams roll. And if I have to drop one, it would be the Tuna salad roll. I have no idea about any other of the items listed on their very huge menu (like sandwiches, soups, etc..). I primarily go here for the fried seafood and the rolls and whenever in the mood for something not fishy, I go for the steak tips or the wing dings. Disclaimer: Weekends in season are crazy busy. Getting a parking spot on the beach or anywhere near the clam box is mind boggling. So good luck on that and really, have no advice on what would be a better option than just park wherever you can get lucky! So going there on a totally off time is recommended (like most locals try to do). Enjoy!

This was a good alternative to the usual places we go to during our lunch break. Although, it was nothing amazing. The seafood was a bit bland; it needs some lemon and hot peppers to compliment. The fries were nice and fresh, although also a bit bland. Nothing special in my opinion. Typical fried seafood!

Come here for a down and dirty seafood meal. Clam Box says they've been dealing out fried delicasies since 1963 and it shows... But if you can get past the run down dining room and lack of AC, then sit down and enjoy a solid plate of fried scallops, shrimp, and belly clams with a seaside view. And if you got room, splurge on a piece of fried haddock. You could feed your family with this huge plank of premium tasty fish!

They fry fish and other stuff in the same fryer. For those of us with allergies to other stuff, this place has little to no options.

I'm a loyal, lifelong Tony's fan and came here for the first time on Saturday with my out-of-town in-laws and my mom. Mom had recently gone here for the first time and said it was good. (I guess I'm not that loyal anymore!) It was a hot, humid evening and Wollaston was crowded. There was a line out the door and down the sidewalk for the Clam Box. It was probably a 30-45 minute wait to even order. The menu is similar to Tony's - fried seafood, some Greek stuff. No ice cream. Beer and tiny bottles of wine. Standard fountain drinks. When we got to the door, it was pretty stifling inside. One ancient AC, and having one door open didn't help, I'm sure. The ladies' bathroom was clean. Staff was much more surly than Tony's, but hey - it was slammed. No lobster pagers and I only heard the outdoor PA call a number once. Much more dated interior/facilities than Tony's. Less indoor seating, more outdoor seating. Slightly...seedier clientele? Some obviously opiate-addled lady was stumbling around the condiment counter. Just as expensive as Tony's, though. One member of our party got broiled scallops and we were told that they would take 15-20 minutes. WHAT? Broiling is one of the fastest ways to cook stuff! We also did get a whole bunch of other fried stuff so our out-of-towners could sample the selection, though, so a fairly large order: fried seafood platter (with smelts and fried scallops), clam bellies, clam chowder, fried fish platter, and a separate order of just clam bellies to share. Clam chowder was ok. Seemed thickened with cornstarch though. Didn't get any actual clam in my spoonful. My fried fish portion was large, had huge flakes, and I couldn't identify what it was, exactly. Maybe a little overcooked. Not such a fan of the tartar sauce - not enough relish, mostly mayo. Mom loved her broiled scallops and dad-in-law enjoyed his fried scallops, calamari, smelts, etc. Stepmom-in-law though her chowder was great but thought smelts were too fishy - they are apparently not a thing in New Orleans. Husband very much enjoyed his bellies. I tried one and thought they were better than Tony's, but I can't really figure out why. Fatter/juicier, maybe? Fries were not as good/flavorful as Tony's. Tartar sauce at Tony's is better. Batter in general at Tony's is better. Overall: Tony's wins. But I'm biased, having grown up on it, escaping stifling Dorchester for the sandy beach (NEVER THE WATER THOUGH DON'T SWIM THERE SERIOUSLY SEWAGE - NO), the sea wall, some fried goodness, and a nice ice cream cone.

Absolutely DISGUSTING!! Went there on Mother's Day. It was a beautful day thought it would be a good idea. NO! Ordered a seafood platter. The batter was absolutely gross, bland NO flavor. I dont eat certain things so I asked for an additional piece of fish. When I got the additional piece of fish it was not fully cooked. I brough it back up to the counter saying I could not eat undercooked fish. The staff seemend very annoyed slamming his hands on the counter like an animal. We went over to MArina Bay after where I should have just gone in the first place! I felt sick the rest of the day and my boyfriend had diarrhea all night. Complete SHITHOLE never again!

So I recently did a review on Burke's Seafood and I thought I'd be a fair critic by checking out The Clam Box since it's been a while. WORST decision ever. Bottom line: if you have standards for seafood and don't want an upset stomach worst than IHop, please don't bother. I went around 11:30AM before the lunch rush so we got our food pretty quickly. By the time 12:30pm hit, there was a line out the door! So get there early if you don't want to wait. My friend and I both ordered the Seafood Platter with a cup of Spicy Crab chowder. The total came out to around $30 and the portions were decent....the quality not so much. The first turnoff was the insane amount of grease. I saw the fry cook just dump the food from the basket to the plate...which means they don't try to absorb some of the grease out. I could see the oil just dripping into the plate. The only thing that was good was the fried clams. They were pretty big and had some good flavor. Everything else (haddock, scallops, smelt, calamari) just tasted like grease. There was zero taste in the seafood. You would just bite in and just eat texture. The fried haddock and smelt was also undercooked. The Spicy Crab chowder was okay... nothing great. Eating the meal wasn't even the worst part. It was the post meal that hit you in the face. I felt uncomfortable for hours with an upset stomach. Never again....

I've gone to both The Clam Box and Tony's over the years and believe The Clam Box is better. They are a lot less expensive than Tony's too. Better value and better food. Wish they were open year round.

Probably the most overrated seafood place I've ever been to. It used to be worth the ride, talk about going downhill. The clams which they used to be famous for were fried in burnt oil, the French fries were probably fried in the same manner. The line was long and service was slow . You would think there would be more complaints but with most of the people in the area are stoned on weed how would you know any better. This place sucks.

Fried whole clams, fried oysters and scallops, fish and chips, can't get better than that. All seafood was plump and juicey, very tasty and delicious. Perfect lunch after a long walk around Wollaston beach. Can't wait to go back.

  • Jen H.

I just moved down the street and was craving fried seafood and it was worth the walk over. The view is great since it's right in front of Wollaston beach and you can see the Boston skyline, which was really nice at night. My husband and I got the combo of fried shrimp, clam strips and calamari. Everything was great and reminded me of one of my favorite places on the Cape.

  • R Y.

Got the fried oysters and scallops. It was delicious with tartar sauce but without it didn't have much flavor at all, not even salt. The coleslaw was warm and again not very flavorful.

Great location right across the beach. Good spot to grab lunch or dinner in the spring and summer. The food is just ok, nothing special. Definitely more pricey than what it is worth. The fries were very disappointing and soggy. The fish was not great, I've definitely had better. It didn't come with any lemon, and when I went back in to ask for some the owner seemed annoyed that I even asked and only gave me one lemon slice. There were 2 of us and we both got fish, but because of the way I was treated I did not ask for any more lemon. The Greek salad was good, although all the ingredients are piled on top of the salad which makes it a little difficult to dress the salad. If you plan to eat out on the patio, make sure to have something heavy to weigh your plate down because they give you really cheap paper plates and they will fly away if it's the least bit windy. Not only that, but the greasy fries, fish, soak right through the plate. They do have more heavy duty plates but apparently you have to ask for those, and when I did, once again I was met with rudeness.

Food - we got the clam roll. It was extremely chewy and oily. Had to dump most of the order. Service - The waitress was quite cheerful. Self serve place. Ambience - The seating outside has a great view of the beach. Cost - $15 per pax. Not worth the price.

  • Archie W.

The wait time in line was 15 minutes one register open it was very hot inside - food is good but if you are in a hurry do not stop by.

  • Jessi R.

Pretty disappointing. We ordered a couple of seafood platters as well as fried oysters and an additional order of scallops. All All the food was incredibly cold, the breading was low quality AND dripping in grease (seriously, my oysters were sitting in a puddle, it was nauseating). Even the fries were soggy. Honestly, when the best thing we ordered were the kid's meal chicken fingers, you know shit's gotten real. I've been here before without issue. I hope this experience was just a fluke, but maybe I'll stick to just getting Richardson's ice cream when I head to Wollaston in the future.

Has to be the best fried food in the boston metro area. Tried the clam strips with fries and coleslaw. Out of this world. Perfectly seasoned and well balanced. Nephew wanted lobster roll and thoroughly enjoyed it. I asked for a bite after he had half of my fries. No go. Will get a payback from uncle next time. Parking is a big issue. But plenty of options if you are willing to walk a few steps back and forth parking in the backroads. All that fatty fried food will burn for sure.

Pros: leaving full and content with a ton of big belly fried clams and fries in your tummy Cons: fried food isnt healthy and it was a quick $20.00 dollars ( too expensive ) But this is my favorite place in wolly to go since I was little!

    (3)
  • Steve F.

First off, prices are high end for take-out...but this isn't the Stouffer's type, frozen in a box seafood served sometimes at the wannabe restaurants...this is the real deal. For fried seafood, especially...this is the best quality you'll see here in the Northeast. An icon for decades that has consistently contributed to the homesickness of those carpetbaggers that have packed up and moved out of the South Shore and a few to several state lines away looking for that "ideal place"(ahem).

Its ok dont get me wrong. Its minimally cheaper than Tony's but not nearly as good. Spend just a few bucks more and go to Tony's. I will go back if I'm with a group and someone has their heart set on it.

We've been fans of the Clam Box for years. We had family in town so we took them for a late lunch. Three of us had fish that smelled like ammonia. (We googled this and apparently it's a sign of decomposition). My husband took it back and received some attitude from the staff but they did agree to make a fresh batch. It took forever and I was just about to lose it when it finally showed up. Disappointing - both food and customer service. Looks like we're switching our allegiance to Tony's!

  • Abby R.

Ok if you want limp, greasy fries (which, I'll be honest, sometimes I do) roll up here. I don't eat seafood much, so my opinion of this place is probably somewhat less valid than others since I'm not part of their target audience. Hot dogs served on finger-wetting buttered buns, mediocre cheeseburgers and occasionally appropriate-for-my-food-mood limp, potatoey, grease fries. All for the low, low price of actually pretty expensive. Burger and fries and a drink will easily put you up in the $15 range, but it's the clams and lobster rolls people come here for. One thing I do like is that they have buzzers to tell you when your food is up, so if you want to stroll the beach a bit while you wait, it's convenient. I much prefer Tony's Clam Shop, just down the road.

I know spring is near when the clam box is open Went there tonite had good clam chowder, fried scallops and fish me and kids were pleased and full Can't wait for the Ice Box to open up in April Only complaint is the tarter sauce, not enough pickles

    (4)
  • Michael M.

Nice people watching spot. A bit pricey for what it is. Kinda bland to be honest. I'd recommend that they offer spicy options. Even the fries are bland. Nice staff, though.

  • Steve T.

My gf is obsessed with this place and I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty darn good. As far as fried sea food places go this is a great stop and eat place - their fries are amazing and so are the fried scallops! Whole belly clams are amazing too. My only complaint is that when you order fried haddock/fish and chips it's one giant piece of fish instead of it chopped up into smaller pieces as I expected. It's really worth going here if your in the mood for fatty, delicious food, with extra tarter sauce!!

July 10, 2014 After Mom and I got our hair done at our favorite city salon, we decided to reward ourselves (hey, it takes a lot of energy sitting there all that time) with a delicious seafood meal. Having seen the advertisements on the Phantom Gourmet many times, we took a ride to Quincy and had lunch at The Clam Box, located just across the street from Wollaston Beach. I had a mini meltdown over parking since there are only spaces on the opposite side of the street - and they were all filled - but things calmed down when I decided to drive around the building and park on the one-way side street. Our car door just about lined up with the restaurant entrance, so I took a deep breath and we went inside. A line had formed but things moved quickly as the servers and cooks have things down to a science. Mom and I checked out the overhead menu to see what we wanted. We decided on a cup of chowder ($4.75) and a clam strip roll ($9.25) for me, while Mom had a small order of fish and chips ($9.50). She also wanted a small order of clam cakes ($4.99) because she likes to try them at every seafood restaurant. To drink we chose two small fountain drinks ($2.09 each) which we had to fill ourselves at a nearby machine. Our total came to $32.67. I was given a number and moved down to the opposite end of the counter to wait for the food. Mom took a seat on a nearby bench while I filled our cups with Coke Zero (Mom) and Sprite (me). I also swiped some utensils and napkins from the really handy condiment station which had several containers where you could pump out as much ketchup and tartar sauce as you wish. It got a little crowded where Mom was sitting so she took the sodas and found a great table on their outside deck. I hadn't waited very long before my number was called. I grabbed my heaping tray of food and headed outside to find Mom. Everything was steaming and smelled excellent. The first thing I tried was the chowder. It was so hot that I had trouble eating it at first, but a burned mouth never stopped me before. It had an excellent flavor and was filled with very large pieces of clam and perfectly cooked potatoes. Mom's order of fish and chips was absolutely enormous ... and she chose the small portion! What she received was three pieces of beautiful white fish with a light batter sitting on top of a mound of hand-cut fries. The fish was very moist and flaky and couldn't have been done better. The crust was dry (not greasy) and the fries were crisp and potatoey. She loved everything about her meal. My clam strip roll was fabulous as well. The batter on my clam strips was also dry (and I love that because greasy food makes me sick) and there was a ton of strips on a barely visible hot dog roll which was buttered and grilled to perfection. I ate every strip on my plate. The only disappointment was the clam cakes. Mom's bite was her first and last. The cakes were not your typical clam cakes, but flavored with what looked and tasted like banana peppers. They were very spicy and Mom is not a fan of peppers so unfortunately this was a bust. Even though I enjoy peppers and even started in on a second cake, it just wasn't what I was hoping for. We were looking for something more traditional, but I'm sure that many people enjoy them. It was a lot of fun sitting outside, looking across Quincy Bay at the Boston skyline. There is plenty of seating indoors as well, but nothing says New England like eating seafood outdoors. The Clam Box has a very large menu and I'm sure that you'll find something here to satisfy every palate. We will be back! Visit newenglandbites.com for more tasty reviews from Southern New England!

Large portions Food comes out quick Good location Fried food however is missing some flavor. There needs to be some spice or even just salt and pepper on the food before frying. Tried fish & chips. Hubby said the shrimp was the same story. Good a little oily too. Overall not bad, just not as good as I had hoped considering the popularity of the place. I will try Tonys next time.

    (2)
  • Y J.

I usually go to Tonys for fried whole clams. I wonl't make the mistake of buying from the Clam Box again and here is why: I ordered a large order of Fried Whole Clams (which they give you a lot of), however there was no salt or any other type of seasoning present, there were tons of 'strips,' and there were strips with attached bellies. The bellies were small. The clams were packaged "to go" and they were not placed in a styrofoam container; just a small thin cardboard container that is normally used to hold french fries, etc. There was no tartar sauce given. Tasteless, poor packaging, low quality whole bellies. Am I going back? Not if I were starving!!

    (1)
  • Jay K.

The food was surprisingly good. I got the steak tips and they were practically melt-in-your-mouth quality. The girl at the register was very upbeat and nice, but not overboard about it. Like genuinely friendly. It made my day :)

  • Nandanie S.

Oh Clam Box. You tease me every time I go for a power walk along the beach. When I'm not power walkin' and need a seafood fix, I come here. They have everything that New Englander's palette craves, except for lobster (I think). I always get their calamari, scallops, and shrimp plate with onion rings and cole slaw. Hubby's a vegetarian soon to be pescatarian, and can't wait to try seafood! That will be a great day. Anyway, yeah Clam Box is a great spot...it's right by the beach and has good, local, seafood fare. Portions are HUGE, so go with an empty belly or just take home the goody leftovers. :)

I live right down the street from the clam box, I come running to the box when in season. When its closed I have serious cravings. My favorite place to eat by far. Phantom Gourmet was impressed and so am I! My favorite is the classic fish and chips. Even though everything else there is great too. In the summer the line stretches out the door, the long lines speak for the food. The service is excellent, not to mention the ocean view is something you cant beat. I bring my family here when they come to visit me. You can sit on the patio drink a cold beer, eat good food, and watch the sea, okay by me! If you are a true new Englander and love fried seafood come here, you wont be sorry!

  • C L.

I made a big mistake going here tonight..long lines and awful food. I don't get why this still attracts so many customers. The clam strips were just flavorless batter, and once it cooled a bit, I might as well have been eating sticks. Awful texture! The onion rings were decent, but again needed more flavor. The cole slaw was limp and bitter, not good at all. I left with a greasy taste in my mouth and an aching stomach. Save your money, this place is not worth it!

Just like you , I read through all the reviews here on the CB as well as for other local Quincy Clam places to hit up for Fathers day (Which there were a bunch to choose from on here). We also saw Phantom's review and video on YouTube and decided to go for it.. Maybe big belly Bruce would be there LOL.. We drove up from RI so we thought it better be good considering we are repping from the "Ocean" State.. They did not disappoint us in any way and it is now up on the top of my list of places to get back to when that fried seafood craving comes on.. The price is not cheap, but the quantity they served up was a match to the price. Remember this when ordering because we left with almost a full box of take out (A large Clam and Large Scallops were ordered for 3 people). There was just more than we could finish. The line does go out the door on a busy day like Father's Day I guess, but it moved along and we were seated and eating in 30-45 minutes (considering the line was 20+ deep). And after the food we just went across the street and slipped into our food coma in peace for an hour or so.. Suggestion: Bring a blanket and lay out on the sand after to get the full experience.

Summer nights is usually when I come here. Or when I'm driving past the beach- the smell usually gets me to park and grab something quick. There's often times a line in and outside of the spot, but the service is fast and the food is good. I always get the scallops which are juicy, fresh and meaty! I like it compared to Tony's which is a hop away from the clam box.

This place is packed which makes me think it was good. So I tried it out. As a result, it wasn't worth waiting in line and ordering the food. I went near dinner time (around 6/7PM) The young kid at the cashier is rude and annoying. He has the face that I would like to punch. No respect from that kid. Ordering took forever and when the food came, it was mediocre. For the price, I expect something a little better than average..

Delicious fresh fried seafood, served promptly with a smile. The sea scallops are juicy, light, and succulent. The fish tastes as if it just left the ocean, jump into the fryolator and onto my plate. And the clams are crispy, soft, and fried to perfection. The onion rings are an absolutely fresh and batter fried, it reminds me of those awesome onion rings at Revere beach. Being located directly across from Wollaston Beach this is a family go to spot that's a ten minutes drive from Roxbury.

love their fried scallops and fried whole belly clams! sooooo good with the tartar sauce! fried calamari was okay.. could have been more of the calamari and less of the breading. french fries were pretty good as well :) still would come back but only order the fried scallops and fried whole belly clams!

Ordered a clam roll... Order comes up and the waitress pushes my order forward dislodging a very large clam off the roll and onto the floor. The waitress response? "Sorry" . This was a $14 roll with clams so large there were probably only 14 on there. So, at a buck a clam I believe the correct response is "sorry we will make you another right away." Everything else was fantastic.... Would fave been 4 stars if the waitress got it together.

Best oceanside fried seafood place close to downtown Boston. Scallops are amazing in the summer. You have to order the seafood platter, best value and dish on the menu.

If you live in Quincy, there've been two choices for fish shacks, however many other such places are in town: Tony's and the Clam Box. The one you go to is pretty much generational: I patronized the Clam Box because my grandparents (dead over 20 and 30 years respectively now) did. I've always been happy with that choice. The Clam Box has everything I want in a fish shack -- zero ambiance, close enough to the sea to hit the water with a rock, large portions, good prices, courteous staff ... and excellent food. In recent years, the owners have been Greek, and have brought a Greek spin to the menu, but you can still get seafood and fries here, good as ever. The fries especially are the most outstanding I've ever had at a restaurant. Period. Ever. I don't live in Quincy any more, but I do miss the Clam Box.

We drove out from Worcester after seeing this place highlighted on The Phantom Gourmet. Was disappointed, especially considering their prices, that they don't clean their scallops. A little extra prep would go a long way.

I use to be a dedicated Tony's Clam Shop fan, but I have been to the Clam Box a few times. I've found out that the Clam Box has low prices and my experience over the summer thus far is higher quality of food. I've had their scallops, and fish sandwich which i thought were both were good. I may move mover to the Clam Box as a dedicated customer.

  • Chris G.

Love the clam box. Been a loyal customer for years, but this year I feel that the quality has declined. The fish is not as good, portions are smaller. I get that trying to watch expense but going up on prices and down in quantity is a quick way to lose customers. They do have delicious scallops and shrimp though! Give it a try, you'll still be pleased!

God's little fried seafood place. 1, Seafood entrees are nothing but fresh seafood and light crumb breading. 1a. And clean grease. 2. French fries are aged potatoes hand-cut. 3. Onion rings are lightly-breaded.thin-but-not-stringy type. 4. Past masters at deep frying. I have been eating at the well-beloved Clam Box in Wollaston for 35 years. Never had a bad meal that I can recall. (I love big bellies, so I always call ahead and get a scouting report.so I'm not disappointed.) I have a healthy, but not extreme, appetite. (6'4", 275 lbs., and I must have gotten there somehow). I find that I can split a two-way meal (clams and scallops, fries plus rings instead of cole slaw - yup, you can do that!). That comes to little over $12 apiece and we may even have a ring left over. Occasional overeating has its pleasurable aspect, so if have the gelt and YOUR big belly will take it, go for it. by yourself. I've done it and. I live with the shame. ****Crazy criticisms that I've read here. It is to laugh.. 1. EEK! The clams had black stuff in bellies.(They're supposta!) 2. EEK! They don't clean their scallops. (Clean WHAT exactly?) 3. EEK!There were bones in the smelt! (You're not from around here, are you?) 4. The food isn't seasoned. (And the problem is...? 5 I ordered clam strips and... (You ordered clamstrips? Ass.) 6. They shoulda told me this stuff wasn't kosher! Mmmmm. (I made this one up.) 7. I didn't know it would be greasy and fattening. (So your boyfriend left you?.) 8. The food is not cheap. (Is seafood cheap somewhere? Don't go there.) "PLEASE, YOU PEOPLE, GO BACK TO LONG JOHN SILVER'S!!!" Now that I've disposed of the merely ignorant, let's get to another group of negative critics. I don't get why the Tony's Clam Shop partisans (driving their loud, smelly, fat-ass Hardly-Ablesons) denigrate The Clam Box. Sounds like clam penis envy to me. (No, they don't, have one.) Now, I admit that I've never felt any need to go the extra quarter-mile to Tony's (I bet he's a clamtastic guy), so I can't fairly comment.on the food. I know that no place could be BETTER than the CB, but I can name a number of places in their same league. (This ain't haute cuisine. Once you've fried a few thousand orders, you're bound to get the hang of it..) And iff someone tells me the prices or portions are better over there, I'll give Tony's a try. But face it, lovers, in Quin-z, the Clam Box is the ol' silverback. and the big swingin' dick on the block.. LAST THIN': The Clam Box closes after the season. Closing day is in the first week of November.. Here's a thought: I don't know when/if Tony's Clam Shop closes down. If they don't shut, then they win. 'Cuz 'HAS CLAMS' trumps 'NO CLAMS' every time. ***NEW DATA: TONY'S CLOSES FIRST.

On a Saturday about 3 PM. the order was taken by a nice young girl at the counter. The order was done in a reasonable period of time. Your number is called and you pick it at the counter. This a self service eatery so you also get your own napkins and tartar sauce. We ordered a medium size fried clams with the bellies. In my opinion, these were just mediocre. The serving size was amble and the cost was $19.75. The breading fair and clams were not juicy at all.

Do yourself a favor and go down the road to Tony's Clambox. The food isn't terrible. But why settle for mediocre when you can get something better within minutes away?

This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Quincy. I went to Eastern Nazarene College (right up the street) and the whole campus would roar when The Clam Box would open. Seriously, it's great. Actual restaurant: the physical restaurant is nice. I wouldn't say it's anything to rave about, but it's a great beach place. Let me explain a little further: say it's middle of the summer and you are hanging out at Wollaston Beach (watch out for the needles) and you are extremely parched and hungry, go to the Clam Box in your swim suit -- it's a no judgment zone. Wearing your sweat pants because you just got dumped from a bad relationship? Hey, head to the Box. The food: The food is delicious, it really is. Portions are huge! Absolutely huge. I always get the fish sandwich with cheese and french fries on the side. The fries aren't anything to rave about, but they do the job. The fish sandwich, though, is amazing. I have never been to the Box where I had to wait for longer than 7 minutes after placing my order. Sometimes the line is a little long, but it's totally worth the wait. The downfall: it's a little expensive (and probably awful for you). But, it's worth it.

I start to salivate and my tummy starts to rumble every time I think of the Clam Box. I've been coming here for years and the quality as well as my opinion of the place hasn't changed one bit. There's something about fried-anything that makes you feel amazing after eating it. My favorites at The Clam Box include the Fried Scallops and the Fried Clam strips. They have many different options and combo platters. I often find myself splitting a 3-way platter combo [choice of 3 Fried items, french fries, and cole slaw for ~$18] with a friend or two because they give you so much food! You are able to take your food to go or eat there, either inside with a/c or outside on the patio area. There is a station with all the utensils and napkins youd ever need as well as the ketchup and yummy tarter sauce. Fries are fries, and I've definitely had better cole slaw. However, the fried seafood items are amazing with the fried scallops being the best. If you're craving anything other than seafood, dont even bother coming here! Indulge in the oceany goodness! Their raspberry lime rickeys are also great. They serve beers, bottled drinks as well as fountain drinks with unlimited-do-it-yourself refills. Afterwards, get a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt brought in by Richardson's Icecream shoppe. Or! I always find myself right next door getting a lemon slush which completes my Clam Box meal nicely. The best part of it all is the location. It is directly across from Wollaston Beach which is a great area to walk, sit, talk, and tan. It's probably one of the best beaches to skip rocks at -- There's tons of flat rocks! I'm a pro =]. Theres plenty of parking across the street and a lot behind the restaurant. To be able to eat an awesome meal and than walk along the shore with the sun setting is amazing. Guys, take a hint. Taking your date to the Clam Box will definitely earn you some brownie points.

This review is only for the fried clams, because I am OBSESSED with them and I forget to try anything else. The Clam Box definitely has the biggest bellies in town (and I have been up and down the coast looking for big bellies). Their bellies are already decently sized, but if you request the biggest ones, you're going to get giganto-bellies. Can't go wrong there!

View is the best in Quincy! Food is consistently good with big portions, but it ain't -exactly- inexpensive. Market price, though, so it's fair. Great beer selection and free refills on fountain drinks means you won't ever be thirsty. Food is made quickly, too! Overall this place is great to show off to out-of-town friends, but be ready to drop at least $50 for 2-3 people so you'll leave full and satisfied.

Fisherman's platter is not worth the $21. Sandy whole clams that are black inside, 2 tiny shrimp, smelt with the backbone still in it and barely any fries. The clam cakes have the weirdest texture and are very dry. Go to Tony's instead.

Not bad for a little business that's run right across from Wollaston beach. Everything is pretty much fried though... which is kind of bad for you.. BUT, it's still delicious! I highly recommend the fried clams there! It was way better than I expected it to be... especially with ketchup on the side! MMM.

WE have been wanting to go here for a few years but never get up north. The line is fun as you talk to the other people and it goes by fast. The food is average..make sure you ask for your fried foods to be well done. We did not know to do that and it was a little mushy and gooey. I would not say that it is an amazing restaurant, but a good experience when in Ipswich. Would we go again? yes, but just ask the people in line and locals who are there how to order.

My daughter and I tried this place during our Summer 2009 vacation to Boston and we were very pleased with it. She had the fish and chips and I had the clam strips with onion rings and coleslaw. The clam strips were especially yummy (as were the onion rings and slaw) and my daughter enjoyed her dinner very much as well. The casual beach-front atmosphere of the restaurant and the outdoor seating, with a beautiful view of the water and the Boston skyline in the distance, made this one of our favorite stops during our trip. I was even pleasantly surprised to discover that parking was easy to find, with all of the meters along the beach. After we ate, we crossed the street and sat on the wall watching the waves and chatting. Total relaxation!! I can't claim that these are the best clams in Quincy, since this is the only place I've been, but I can say this was one of our most enjoyable evenings during our vacation, and the Clam Box was a part of that. I would definitely go back on another trip to Boston or recommend it to a friend planning a trip there.

The building is unassuming and the deliciousness inside was unexpected. We ordered a mountain of food: onion rings, fries, fried shrimp, chicken sandwich, and fried cod. The shrimp was the best shrimp I have ever had. It was fresh, plump, and sweet. The onion rings were crispy and I couldn't stop eating them. I was visiting the East coast and definitely needed a lobster roll. The lobster roll at The Clam Box was packed with all types of lobster meat, including claw. There was very little mayo which is exactly how I like it. The bread was crispy and buttery. I wish I could eat here every week. My advice would be to those who aren't accustomed to eating large quantities of fried foods. Being that I am not from the area, I wasn't prepared for how much food would be on the plate. We ordered the smaller plates, thankfully, but it was still a lot. I saw people eating and eating the platters, so it seems some people really like to eat that much food; I would say that one platter could feed three people.

The Best! LOVE the food, the staff, the atmosphere... I love it all!! I eat here WAY to much!!! Yummmmy!!! Plus, you can get beer or wine and sit outside on the large patio!

I really like the fried clams...the fried scallops were okay. It was pretty empty on a monday...I went around 3pm. There's outside seating...and inside with AC, thank god! I also had the raspberry lime ricky...which tastes js like rasp.soda? haha, I wanna try the lobster roll next time...heard it was good.. The people that work there..are interesting...I was still staring at the menu before one of the girls was like "ARE YOU ORDERING"...okay! calm down!!

Since the weather turned sunny after a month of rain practically, I was craving eating some fried seafood outside. So, the boy and I decided to take a trip out of Boston to the Quincy shore area for some fried seafood. I had yelped a few places ahead of time and knew we were in luck. We drove down the Shore Dr. and noticed the Clam Box with outdoor seating, so went in for a bite. The menu was huge. A little bit of everything. Prices were reasonable against other seafood joints around Boston. We decided to get the seafood platter ($17.25). It was a mix of clam bellies, scallops, shrimp, calamari, smelts, served on top of fries. The portion was just right for both of us. The seafood was great. I especially liked the scallops, crispy on the outside but sweet and soft inside. There were some very large clam bellies in there. I tried some smelts, which I don't think I've ever had, it was almost a whole small fish fried without the head. Good though. Fries were a little fishy. The outside area had about 12 tables with umbrellas. It's pretty much no frills, so you have to go inside and order then take your food and utensils outside. After walking down the street after, we noticed another rival clam shack called Tony's that looked very similar. However, I noticed the sign of the Clam Box says "The Original". Now I'm curious and will have to give them a shot and see which one I like better.

My mother and I were looking for a great clam plate and we found it at the Clam Box. We split the whole clam plate and it was plenty of food for us to split. The clams were fried to perfection and the french fries were great as well. We also got a bowl of clam chowder and it was really thick which is just the way I like it. The line was going out the door when we got there, but it moved quickly and we had a food in no time. With seating inside and out there wasn't a wait for a table. I can't wait to go back!

Theme of this cuisine: Throw it in the fryer! For $23, my wife and I ordered their choose 2 combo, clam cakes, and shared a soda. Clam cakes were pretty darn good. Everything else was so-so. Seemed pretty unhealthy and not that much seafood. Line was out the door; Not really sure why this place is so popular. The seafood of McDonalds? Boardwalk is across the street? This part of town was also a little disturbing. Police were everywhere as if expecting things to run amuck...Locals seemed like a rough crowd. Wife loves it though :-). So it's a toss up. Why not.

Good stuff. Frying food is often a way to disguise lower-quality food. But that's not the case with The Clam Box. We were impressed by the fish; it was flaky, fresh, and delicious. The oysters and clams were also good--clams weren't rubbery because they weren't frozen. Fries were decent fries, and the cole slaw was perfectly fine. All-around, this was a great place to get good fried seafood. They do offer other options (sandwiches, broiled fish, salads, even gyros). The menu stretches the length of the counter, which is nearly as long as the building. Portions are huge. One meal can easily feed two, making this an affordable option, too.

Fried Clams, Clam Cakes, Popcorn Shrimp, French Fries, and Onion Rings. How can you go wrong? Highlight of the meal were the fried clams. Batter was not greasy and not too heavy. Clams were so fresh and tasty and not rubbery at all. The place has a huge patio outside and is surprisingly clean. Props to the staff for keeping it so clean. While I was there, I saw two staff members come outside to tidy up the place. However, the best thing about my experience was the customer service at the counter. When my number was called, the worker re-called our order and noticed that our clam cakes were a little over-fried. He quickly said "I'm going to make a new batch for ya since these are a little over-cooked". Just like that. In 5 mins, we got a fresh order of clam cakes. Honestly, we would have just ate those over-cooked puppies if he didn't put out the quality of them. Thank you Mr. Clam-quality control guy!

Well, this place is obviously very popular, but I'm not exactly sure why. For about $40.00, I got the fried whole clams, a lobster roll and two sodas. The serving sizes are pretty good, but the quality of the food was so-so. The lobster roll is really lobster salad on a roll (i.e. a ton a mayo and a little lobster). Also, if you've never been before, the crowd at Wollaston Beach can be a little disturbing. For most of my meal, I got to listen to a fat lady in a bikini shout into her cell phone about how she was lucky that the judge let her post bail so that she could enjoy the weekend. Anyways, bottom line: a little pricey for ok food and a kind of gross atmosphere, but at least the portions are good. FYI - they do serve beer and wine.

I highly recommend the crab soup and the fried oysters. The crab soup was bursting with flavor and sooo delicious! The fried oysters were tender and tasty with a really good tartar sauce on the side. We just sat and looked out at the ocean, drinking some Coronas, and snacking on fresh seafood. Life doesn't get much better than that! Waitstaff was super-friendly. An all-around pleasant, low-key experience and the prices didn't hurt too much. Bueno!

I can not say enough about our experience here today. My husband and I had our mouths watering for seafood at the Cape, then got caught in traffic around Weymouth. We detoured and found a few nice places to spend the day. Then hunger set in, We placed our fate in our GPS and I randomly picked a place to go, on our way back north. I chose The Clam Box. We loved the indoor and outdoor dining, we chose inside. Windows were open, ceiling fans on, very comfortable. I ordered the Scallop plate, my Husband the clam strip plate. When we got our food shortly after ordering the portions were amazing. very pleased with our food. The breading on the clam strips was flavorful and not heavy. My husband had to share with me to finish, and we did not feel full or bloated after eating.. Cole slaw also was a great portion and sweet like we like it. My Scallops did not disappoint. they melted in my mouth. I just sat there after the first one, and smiled and thanks my GPS for getting us here, as we were so happy with the food, and the view of the harbor. So we still had that "beach" feel. The manager had a great personality, and helped to keep the dining area clean, and was seen wiping down trays, which was nice to see, that he took an active part in the "small not so fun" parts of the business. I told my husband I had to let him know everything was amazing. and I did. I let him know it was our first time even though they have been around since 1968 I think. I can see why. If you are in this area, they are not far from the highway, get off the exit, and enjoy.

Wayyy too much grease. Fish n Chips were decent but if you are over 30, I wouldn't recommend eating here. Good spot to hit late night when nothing else is open and you are craving seafood. Surrounding area looks depressed as well - if you are trying to impress someone - don't bring them to The Clam Box.

You want clams you go to Clam Box, you want lobster rolls you go to Tony's Clam Shop, you want to gain 5 pounds you go to both. Definitely a summer time spot across from the beach in Quincy. Can't say I've tried a lot on the menu, but the most memorable is the whole belly clams. Big and juicy that melts in your mouth. My regular is the scallop (huge), oyster (tiny), and clam plate all served on a bed of fries (in case you want to get your money's worth on your next triple bypass). There is enough grease for the month, but the same with anything fried. I try not to eat it that often because I can't move after I eat all that fried stuff, but if you can bless you!

I love the clam box. The food is good all around and fried perfectly. The fried scallops are probably my favorite but the fried clam strips and fried whole clams are pretty great too. The french fries are fine, nothing hugely special and the onion rings are good but in that very thin and heavily battered kind of way. The theme for this place is definitely fried goodness so if you are looking for a healthy option or fine dining you are definitely not going to find it here. The food itself probably deserves three stars and the prices can be a little steep for some items but the overall personality and offerings of the place push it over four stars easily. Regardless of if you can find better fried clams around Boston, the Clam Box has been a longstanding family tradition for many people who grew up in the area - including this one. Even now when I haven't lived in Boston for over 10 years, I still make a point to visit the Clam Box whenever I am in town during the summer. I will forever keep a special place in my heart for the fried goodness of the Clam Box.

I never consider going to the Clam Box since it's so close to Tony's Clam Shop. I am a huger devoted fan of Tony's Clam Shop. So many other people are fans of Tony as well which makes it too packed on some nights. This led me to the Clam Box. I ordered my usual seafood platter. It came with a smelt, fish, calamari (although the menu didn't say so), shrimp, scallops, and clams. The order taker seemed like he was clock watching to go party on a Saturday night. They didn't ask if I wanted to substitute anything like they do at Tony's. The Seafood: My first bite was into the smelt. I had to remove it from my mouth it was so gross. The rest of the seafood was excellent so I was able to recover from that traumatic experience rather quickly. Everything was fried nicely and I was impressed by the whole belly clams. The Coleslaw: I have a love/hate relationship with coleslaw. I didn't feel either way towards this coleslaw but I must have liked it since I ate it all. They do have beer here which Tony's doesn't. I don't drink alcohol while I'm eating so this makes no difference to me. I think the Clam Box deserves another chance as I did leave very satisfied. I believe that next time I will go there with going there being in mind. I think the disappointment of not getting Tony's could have affected my opinion but then again I will always think of Tony's if I was that close to it. The outdoor seating there is also great as it was not packed!

My favorite place to grab fried seafood! I like the outdoor seating and it is in close proximity to Wollaston Beach. I have a nice healthy walk after finishing my seafood platter. Love the clam strips and scallops, fries are great too.

I got the clam strip box & there was plentiful, I was shocked by the amount of food I got, I hope they keep this up and not down size their portion otherwise I would be going to Tony's clam shop because they are just a block away. But overall customer service was great, I had a nice random conversation with the employees. So I hope this place keeps up with their work other wise you will lose to other businesses.

Fish sandwich was great! Views of the beach were better. Nothing like people watching while drinking a beer and eating a flaky fish sandwich cooked perfectly. The chowder had a lot of clams and was nice and thick instead of thin.

First and foremost, fantastic name. I usually stop here for lunch if I'm on my way into the city. The place gets very busy during the summer since its right across the street from the beach but there is always enough seating inside or outside on the patio. I usually get the tuna club and it is phenomenal. The sandwich is large and the fries are excellent. They hand cut the potatoes and fry them fresh to order so they are always hot, fresh, crispy and delicious. I have also gotten the calamari before and it was very good too. I will always be a fan of this place.

We had heard great things about the Clam Box from a women I work with so we decided to give it a try. Oh my goodness was it delicious! For the longest time I couldn't find a good place for whole belly clams, I sure found it last night. The clams were huge with tons of flavor, they weren't overly fishy either. The batter they were fried in was light, not the normal heavy greasiness you find at some places. My boyfriend got the fried scallop plate and was in heaven, they were huge. We ended up sharing because it was too good not to! We will be going back for sure before the summer is over!

Clam Box has excellent French Fries and fried clams. While they specialize in fried seafood, I prefer Clam Box over the Lobster Hut any day, which I still enjoy. This is a cool Fast Food place in a great location.

Oh, The Clam Box. I came here with a small group of people so we could get an authentic taste of New England and we were not disappointed. The bellies of our clams were a bit on the small size. Not sure if it was because of the season or because we took a long time deciding what to order and ended up looking like tourists. Still, they were mild and tender, nothing like rubber bands. But the scallops were great, very fresh and juicy. The onion rings were good, too, but I thought the slaw was forgettable. The portions are generous, we had enough leftover to make an entire platter for the one member of our party who could not pay a visit with us. They carry the usual beer and a small wine selection. I'm a lemonade girl at clam shacks, so booze isn't important to me. The service was friendly, our cashier was a total sweetheart. This place is obviously run by a family, I love that vibe. The food was prepared quickly, since we were one of two groups eating there. Overall, not too pricey or greasy and highly recommended!

Sorry, but I don't get it. I got the sampler to try a bit of everything (everything fried anyway) and basically nothing was very good. Too greasy overall, but that can be forgiven if the flavor was there. But everything was underseasoned, there were bones (tons) in the fish, virtually no clams to be found and those that were were overcooked, the calamari and scallops were edible but nothing to write home about. The fries were decent though. Ended up here because Tony's down the street was not yet open for the season. Oh well.

This place serves fried batter better than any other place I've been. In which I mean, I am surprised by how much they sell of it. The fried clam strips platter i shared was 1/3 clam strips, 1/3 fries and 1/3 coleslaw. Way too few clam strips and Way too much cole slaw. The best way to describe it was eating batter that had been gently rubbed against a clam. The clam cakes were rock solid. I cracked two of them together, and found that inside was just breading. Their wing-dings: Omg it was pretty much chicken wing violation. I have no idea how they managed to turn a tiny chicken wing, into tiny chicken jerky. I saw another reviewer rave about how, their server took back their order and gave them a fresh one after noticing it was a slight bit overcooked. I noticed that that reviewer was a girl. I am not a girl. Is their service selective per sex or just suck?

I haven't been back here in over 10 years, and I'm sorry I haven't been able to get to this neck of the woods in a while. My quest was to find good fried clams this summer, and when my friend suggested the Clam Box, I was a bit skeptical at first, but when I bit into the fried whole belly clams, I was in a state of euphoria! The batter was very nice. The clams were very flavorful. And the taste combined with the tartar sauce started a symphony in my taste buds. The french fries that accompanied the platter were nicely done too, good flavor with the right amount of crisp. Their fried scallops and shrimps weren't too shabby at all. Just like the clams, good batter, crisp and taste as well. Very reasonably priced for what you get. The food wasn't the best that I've ever had, but I will be back whenever I'm Jonesing for fried seafood. The Clam Box beats Kelly's by a mile in my opinion.

Wow, talk about awesome weather we've had this week. Makes me want to have some shrimp. And that's what we did. Tony's was still closed for the season but Clam Box wasn't. Not that I wouldn't have gone to the Clam Box. I prefer Tony's but I do hit this place up from time to time. They're fried Shrimp are so big and yummy. Not greasy at all. That's what I usually come here for. I did have the spicy corn chowder and wasn't too fond of it. It was really soupy and tasted like they just poured tabasco sauce in it. Wasn't much of a chowder. I love to just sit outside, in front of the beach, and enjoy a nice relaxing and casual dinner here. Yay, for the Clam Box!

I do not understand why this place gets such good reviews. The only thing I have to say is average. I came here with my girlfriends one afternoon, and yes it is convenient being right across from the "beach" but the food was so blahh. The fries look like they should be crispy, but they are not at all and in general just not very good. The crab cakes were super dry with very little crab in them. I got the gyro on a pita, which may have been the only thing on the menu not fried. It was okay but pretty bland. My advice is to just take your money elsewhere, but if you want bad fried food, this is your best bet.

Ohhh, The Clam Box. Every time I come here I say that I'm going to my favorite place in the world, though I usually mean Wollaston Beach, but The Clam Box is always part of that for me. You're probably thinking why on earth is dirty Wollaston Beach my favorite place in the world? Because it reminds me so much of my childhood, the beautiful view of Boston, the lovely walk along the beach and just feeling like home. Anyway, I've been coming to The Clam Box (and Tony's) since I was little. I don't eat seafood. I don't eat fried food anymore, really. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE their fried clam strips and french fries. Any time I even try fried clam strips somewhere else, I am very disappointed. Nothing compares. They're fried perfectly and whatever batter they use is just so, so good. I think Tony's uses something similar. I have, over the past several years, ditched Tony's solely for TCB for no other reason than tradition. I try to come here every time I'm on the South Shore (was just here last weekend because it just opened for the season!). Outdoor seating is perfect on a summer evening. Grab some (very good) ice cream inside after dinner and go for a walk along the beach!

When friends and family are visiting and want some good, fresh, FRIED seafood, this is where I bring them. I love their fried scallops and shrimp, but an item you don't want to miss are the whole-belly clams: they're fresh, sweet, briny, and gigantic. If fried seafood isn't your thing, they have an extensive menu, but then what are you doing at a place called "The Clam Box"?? On warmer days, The Clam Box has outdoor seating so you can catch the ocean breeze and have a decent view of the sand, water, and the Boston skyline.

Oh, the potential. I went there today and ordered the fisherman's platter for $19.25. While the seafood tasted fresh, the oil was obviously not hot enough. Everything was soggy and limp, especially the fries and onion rings. The coleslaw was nasty and a wierd pink/redish color. How the heck do you mess up coleslaw??? Will not return, as I have never had a bad meal at Tony's just a short walk away.

"Box of Clams!" Went here a couple times after some Wollaston beaching. Good fries, good fish & chips, crab cakes were "eh" but improved with some hot sauce. Love eating outside on the patio. Greasy and good for after sitting in the hot sun for a couple hours.

The best clams anywhere. I even drove all the way up to Woodman's in Essex, the supposed holy grail of clams, and the clambox is way better.

Let me start off by saying that I am originally from the North Shore, and LOVE the Clam Box in Ipswich. This is NOT the same restaurant. The fried clams were ok, not great, not bad, just ok. My main problems come from the bad fries and cole slaw that came with my clams. I did't hate the food, but I will never suggest going there again.

The amount of so-so reviews for this place is making my question the credibility of New England Yelpers. As everyone knows, Miami Yelpers are on point. Anyways, are you people crazy! This place has the best fried clams in Mass. I feel like the people reviewing this place just don't like whole fried clams because these are the best and this place is famous. Yes they are fried and greasy. That's the point. They are gritty and the bellies are big and that's how they're supposed to be. As for the atmosphere, it couldn't get any better. There is a line out the door at 11am. I thought only my grandma was crazy enough to drag me down here before i'd even had my morning coffee but apparently there are lots of other crazy grandma's out there wanting their clams before lunch time. The inside of the place is small and it smells like the sea and I LOVE IT! Fishing nets are the only decor and there are picnic benches outside if you can't take the smell. If you aren't ready for the full bellied clam experience, get the strips (even though it seems wrong) or if you're really afraid of all of it. Get the lobster roll, it's the best I've had and there is just nothing like it down here in Florida. Not even a close second. Also, the CLAM CHOWDER! It's amazing. Once I came here with my cousin and spilt his cup of it by accident. He still talks about it. Everytime he gets mad at me, he brings it up. Everytime I'm in Mass I will visit the clam box!

So i literally live down the street from here. and i've been going there every summer for iunno how long....i just never got to writing a review...There really is no place that serves as good as fried seafood around the area. Service is pretty fast even with the line out the door sometimes during the middle of summer. Parking....good luck finding it...with the people crowding the beach. Food wise, all the seafood is good, if you want to try everything i suggest the seafood plate, getting a mix of clam, shrimp, haddock, calamari, smelt with sides of fries and slaw. The onions are great with the light battering where as others do the heavy beer battering. The lime-ricky is a must if you don't plan on buying a alcoholic beverage.... Seating is pretty spacious especially when it's nice out and everything just does take-out and brings the food to the beach front.

Oh I miss Boston sooooooo much! I had my last meal here before I moved out of Boston. It was a nice warm sunny day when I went exploring the Nut Island nearby and had lunch here later. Lot of good food for a decent price! I had fried shrimps and clams with fries. And then I took a one way flight out of Logan :(

I came along with some friends on a sunny, blistering 90 degree day. This place is most definitely a hidden jewel. The fried clams are amazing in comparison to Kelly's. They're nice and crunchy, and once you bite into one of the belly's, it just explodes with flavor and juiciness. ::Homer drool:: Oh but how could I not forget to mention the fact that they serve beer and wine to help further dehydrate your body along with the heat. That mixed with an outdoor patio is prime! Although I didn't pay and was only helping myself to my friend's portions, the price is definitely worth it for what you're getting with the clam platter coming in at $28 a pop. Beer is averaged price, I paid 3.75 for my corona. Service is fairly fast, food comes out just as quick as Kelly's. As for inside the restaurant, there's a decent amount of seats. Air conditioning is functional, but the odor of people cooling down from sweating is a bit offensive.

I came and got a large Clam. Food was authentic New England but the service was excellent. Our server was Alex. Ask for him when you come in, he is about 6'1', sideburns, extremely good looking. Funniest and fastest server of any restaurant I have ever been to. He gave me the best descriptions of the food I have ever heard. We were a little worried about our food so he assured us he would go back in the kitchen and help the chef cook the food to make sure it was personalized to our liking. He brought us brand new plates which he had personally chilled but rubbing ice cubes on them for 20 minutes. We got our silverware and he noticed the stainless steel was slightly bent so he spent the next few minutes making sure the fork was perfectly straight. Half way through the meal he brought his girlfriend and family members over to our table to introduce them and let us know all of his family members and girlfriend would be personally serving our table. Each person in our party was assigned 4 family members to be our personalized serving staff. He made us feel like we were part of his family. Once we left he kept in touch and invited us to go on family vacations on his Yacht in Monaco. We have gone a few times. His family continued to serve us dinner on these vacations. In summary, I am pretty sure Alex is the greatest server in the world and should be nominated for at least a Nobel Peace Prize in Service.

I know we are talking fried food here, but when I can taste more of the fried than the food, then I just can't be impressed. I ordered the fried clams, my friend ordered the fried oysters. The fried clams were kinda gross. I mean, the bellies were completely filled with the black gunk. Eww...after awhile I got tired of dissecting my lunch and moved onto the fries. Which, to be honest, weren't that good. Like I could barely salvage them with mustard, salt and pepper. My friend was a little bit better off with his fried oysters. But again, the predominant taste was grease. Yuck. Sitting outside in the sun across from the beach was nice, I just wish the food could have made the experience more enjoyable.

Didn't have a good experience here. I was craving come bellies one day and decided to stop earlier on the road than usual (I frequent the one right down the street from CB), got myself a box of whole clams and was completely disappointed. My craving was not satisfied. Batter was inconsistant, crunchy in spots and thin on others. Every single clam, the batter would pull off. Meh.

See those 4 stars up there? See 'em? Two words: fried scallops. Yummmm. Not bad lobster salad either, if you aren't the lobster roll purist type (it has onion & celery in it). Smell the sea, see kids play on the beach, listen to the non-stop traffic, eat fried food: that is what July lunch at the Clam Box is about. Love it. And, during the 3 weeks of Massachusetts summer, you can watch middle-aged guys on motorcycles zipping from, well, stop light to stop light on Quincy Shore Drive while they fantasize they're in SoCal. They don't take cards, but have an ATM. Also have one of those grab-the-toy-with-the-claw games..

I have been going to the Clam Box since I was a young child. I have always loved the Clam strips. I went there yesterday and was not disappointed. The Clams were crisp and delicious. My wife had the Whole clams and she enjoyed them just as much. The fries had a little to be desired. They were a little dark and soggy. It appeared the fryer hadn't been cleaned recently or the temperature was too low when they were cooked. Even with the bad fries I highly recommend the Clam Box.

Way too greasy! It was an OK place to go after frolicking on the beach for a few hours, especially since the view is pretty, but the food is not great. I shared some fried shrimp and scallops with a friend and the scallops were actually really tasty- just too much grease. The fries are so so. My other friend had clam strips and said they were just ok also. The prices are too high also... So despite the great name, (I *am* a lesbian) I wouldn't reccomend this place.

Gotta say when you want some quick cheap food at the beach, this is the place to be. I've only ever had the fired seafood plates and gyros, but never had a bad one yet.

Okay, although I am not the hugest fan of fried food, I will admit that The Clam Box is a great place to go in the event that you feel the need to stuff your face with some awesome fried seafood. I went about 2 weeks ago most recently but last summer was there about 3 or 4 times. It wasnt particularly warm on the day we went so we sat inside as the patio wasnt even set up. I was with my boyfriend and his father and they LOVE whole belly clams and claim this is the best place to get them. I attempted a whole belly clam in case I had stopped hating them as much as I did when I was a little kid, but alas... I still hate them. I had the clam strips, his father had the fried shrimp and Tim had whole bellies. We ordered a side of onion rings for the table. EVerything was perfectly seasoned and fried. JUST enough salt. I cover everything in black pepper and tabasco so I was happy happy happy with the taste. The strips were tender and not chewy at all. The onion rings were like shoestring onion rings and they were so delicious. Try The Clam Box when its nice out and sit on the patio... Avoid sitting out there during any time even close to rush hour, all you see/hear is a bunch of cars and motorcycles. And dont be shocked if theres a line... this is a south shore hot spot for fried seafood. It moves quickly and its worth it. If you want to avoid crowds for your first venture there, go during the week before it gets too warm out. Oh yea... and they now serve single little bottles of cheap wine : )

The view of Wollaston Beach is amazing from this restaurant. I did a quick take-out order of fried clam strips and I was so disappointed. The batter wasn't cripsy enough and weighed down the flavor of the clams...well actually there wasn't much flavor in the clams either. I was surprised that there were so many people eating here so I'm going to give it a second chance the next time I'm around. It's open till 11pm every night so that's great and they've also added wine and beer!

Have been going to the Clam Box forever. Have to admit today's plan was to travel to Kelly's in Revere for clams, traffic along Revere beach was a nightmare, haven't been too many good beach days.Did an about face headed to Belle Isle, parked in front to find they just closed. Option 3 , head closer to home to Quincy to the Clam Box.Anyway, turned out to be the perfect choice, though their was a long line ,it moved at a steady pace. Two orders of whole belly clams plates for my wife and I made it all worthwhile, clams were perfectly fried, crispy and sweet as were fries and onion rings. Now its officially summer.Nothing better than sitting outside at the beach on a warm summer evening!!

Good fried foods, I had the clam roll which was obnoxiously huge. I'm a big eater and couldn't finish it and never found the roll it covered. I'm not sure they cooked anything long enough most of it could have used a few more minutes in the oil.

Good, but certainly not great fried seafood. The fried seafood breading was good, not greasy but not among the best I've tried. Good fried (whole belly) clams, good scallops (big and juicy), nice fries and decent calamari. The fish was tasty but certainly not exceptional. Fast, friendly service and killer view of Wollaston Beach. If you are in the Quincy area, definitely check it out. Prices are OK, not cheap but not stratospheric like some tourist traps. If you are looking for good fried seafood go to The Clam Box, but its' not the best I've ever tried.

If you like fried whole clams, this is the place to get 'em. They are PERFECT. Don't listen to the other Yelpers that don't know any better. You can get a variety of other seafoods here, as well, but I highly recommend the clams. They are large, crunchy, juicy, and tasty! I will admit that I am an addict, and try to limit my visit here to once a week in the summer. I usually get the Whole Fried Clam Plate with onion rings instead of fries. The cole slaw is excellent, too. And, they also have beer! Nothing like a Sam Adams and fried clams on the beach. This place is a winner in my book, and definitely my favourite stop for a bite to eat in Quincy.

Its really hard to mess up fried seafood. That being said the food here is great. I'm a fan of almost everything on the menu, and they give you super large servings. I always leave in a semi-food coma. The one thing I didn't like on the menu was the onion rings, which is a bummer because i love onion rings with fried seafood.

Tasty stuff, but too much grease for me. Strips are tasty, though not seasoned at all, and the fries were better than average. I wasn't too impressed with the rest of the fare, although my burger was better than expected. View of the beach is nice, and since the sewer treatment plant has been fixed there isn't the nasty odor that used to accompany most meals here. This is an OK place to visit while in the area or at the beach...but I'd recommend bringing along some Pepto-Bismol, just to be on the safe side.

My boyfriend and I were extremely hungry after my dance class in South boston. We wanted seafood, and we wanted to eat at Oyster Union House but the traffic was horrendous and it was pouring, and no parking. We decided to hit up The Clam Box in Quincy (where there is parking and closer to home). We thought it was a restaurant but it was kind of like a fast food sea food joint - the best way I can describe it. I was extremely hungry so we ordered a lot of items. The clam cakes weren't bad. The spicy crab soup was the best thing I ordered. Everything else was pretty much bleh. My bf and I aren't really a fan of deep fried anything but we will still eat anything if we have to. I visited his mom in Missouri last summer, and to be honest the place reminded me a lot of MO. The ambience was nice, very casual and relaxing. Lots of obese people here though, and perverted middle aged men who stared at me like a hawk and one could not take his eyes off my chest. Otherwise it is an alright place if you are in the mood for deep fried seafood. Oh ya my bf complained that the onion rings weren't that great. I did enjoy his fish sandwhich though and ignored my deep friend oysters (didn't know they were going to be deep fried, half soggy and half crunchy). The food was cheap we spent less than $50 for a bunch of things.
