This place is not much to look at but has some of the best korean food I've had anywhere in New England. I've explored the menu in the past but when I go here I get the Bi Bim Bab and am always extremely happy. Coupled with the soup and the assortment of veggies and kimchee is one of the things I like most. This is a constant here. I never feel like I want to take a nap after eating this for lunch or feel as if my body hates me. Its pretty clean eating and is a good balance of veggies, carbs, proteins. I give this place 5 stars on their food alone. If they were to have alcohol this would be a nice perk but they do allow you to bring in alcohol and provide glasses if that is what you want to do. BYOB is always more work but an option. I'll keep going here any time I'm in the area.

Super Fresh! Super Good! I ate here while in Devens, MA for work. I was the first one in the door for lunch on Saturday and when I left 45 minutes later - they were packed! I started with the Yako Man Doo (Gyoza) and they were very good. I prefer my steam-fried, but these were tasty despite being crispy fried. Then I ordered the Bi Bim Bab with Fried Rice. The combination of the beef bulgogi meat, fresh vegetables (sprouts, carrots, spinach, and zuchini), and the over-easy fried egg, all on top of korean fried rice was fabulous. The flavors were well matched and really tasty. The meal came with all the traditional Korean sides, Kimchi (Korean and "American"), picked sprouts, cucumber and radish, all of which were crisp, lightly acidic and delicious. The meal also came with egg-drop soup which was multiples of 10-times better than any egg-drop soup I've ever had. It was a light broth, with what seemed to be only the egg whites and it was amazing; I didn't even feel the need to add chile oil or soy sauce to it! I was so full and content when I left the restaurant that I only wanted to go to sleep... too bad I still had 5 hours of work to do!

I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. It's such a neat little place in the middle of central mass. I'm extremely lucky to have found it by accident but have been many times for takeout. The kimchee are phenomenal, and perfectly spiced - many varieties. If you go in and sit you'll sit with soldiers from Devens, locals from Ayer, Harvard and Acton, and if you mention it to your friends they'll know someone who has been and will say they want to go. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful and the dishes are exactly as how I've had them overseas. Prices are great and dishes are served family style or wrapped up to go with enough for two people per order. I suggest the Yook Ke Jang - firm clear noodles with perfectly cooked vegetables, perfectly chewy beef and just the right amount of oil and spice. Amazing. I'm just so lucky to live down the street! I'm updating my review from 5 years ago. Don't get me works, the food here is really good, but who increases their prices by 36% in 5 years... What my husband and I got in 2010 for $57 just cost me $78.00... It was not as good as it was 5 years ago, still good, but not as flavorful in my opinion. I also feel like $78 for take out with no drinks is absurd! Not sure I'll go back.

I love Woo Jung, but I got TOTALLY blindsided by the prices the other day. My parents went out for dinner so I had to fend for myself in the kitchen.. So I ordered takeout. I read about the delicious bulgo gi and scallion pancakes so that sounded like a decent meal. Called and made the order no problem, though they didn't tell me the price. When I walked in to pick up the order they told me it would be $31.90--- I got confused and asked "for Andrea?" I had only ordered the appetizer and one meal item so I was thinking $18-22 range. Turns out the bulgo gi is $18.95 and the scallion pancakes are $12.95. Now, the portions are huge, which is a bit unnecessary, but it still seems steep - especially for Ayer. I have no qualms about the quality of the food, but I wouldn't do take out again - at least not for one. One picture on yelp shows the menu saying the bulgo gi is $11.00 which is why I figured it would cost less. Buuuuut apparently the price of it has increased 85% over the past 3 years.

This place is one of the best in the area! We recently visited Woo Jung; a family-owned Korean joint in Ayer, MA. The restaurant is small, but clean. The service is prompt and friendly. The kimchi is awesome! It is all fresh and delicious. The sweet and sour cabbage has always been our favorite. For appetizers, we ordered the tempura-battered honey chicken. The chicken was fried perfectly, and it is not too sweet. The scallion pancakes are also delicious. For an entree, our favorite is the bibimbap. The marinated meat is super flavorful, and when combined with fresh veggies, rice, and chili sauce, it is a combination to die for. Good-sized portions make it a great value. This place seems to do well in the take-out business. This honestly is one of the best places in the area, and we will continue to go again and again!

Food was excellent but service was poor. Our group was one of only a few in the restaurant and our server sat in a chair just a few feet away yet it was difficult to get his attention all night. Had to flag him down for more water and then tea and then a check and then to pay the check. At $22 for the entree and no alcohol on the menu you gotta have better service. Good Authentic Korean food. Bring a foghorn to get the waiters attention

It looks like you're about to step foot in a shady location with meats of questionable origin, but do not let appearances fool you-- this place is a GEM. My husband grew up going here and I resisted as long as I could. On our recent trip back north to visit family, I caved. What a pleasant surprise! The food was incredibly flavorful and not of questionable origin as I had previously assumed. Of course we ordered and ate way too much, but this was some of the best Korean food I've had. No regrets whatsoever.

Being stationed in Korea I became a fan of good Korean Food. This place is the best Korea Food around. It's all authentic Korean Dishes and owned and operated by an extremely friendly Korean family.

Woo Jung is by far my favorite restaurant. Everything is awesome, and everyone is super nice. My favorite foods (please excuse terrible spelling): Bulgogi Yaki man do Kimbap The kimchi they have is also awesome, I could eat just that as a meal and be happy. Definitely check this place out of you have any interest in trying Korean food, or just want to try something new.

Consistently excellent Korean food. Excellent service and a very small, quaint environment. Bulgogi & Bi Bim Bap are superb. Been a fan for over 20 years!

Tasty dishes but the meat dishes are not so meaty and small. The place could use little more cleaning.

A hidden gem in the middle of no where! If it wasn't for a trip to Nashoba, I wouldn't even step foot in Ayer! A small restaurant that's been around for over 20 years so I heard. I've been here once before for a reason I don't remember sometime within the past 10 years. The setup looks the same as memory served. Because it was frigid boarding at Nashoba on the coldest weekend this year, I wanted something spicy for dinner. Jam Bong was calling my name!! I asked them to make it extra spicy. Guess what they did to fulfill my request? The dried Chinese chili peppers. If I knew, I would tell them to save it for someone else. Not that it's too spicy; but rather, I'm immune to their potency. Other than that, this spicy seafood noodle soup was perfect for the occasion! For the table, we had kimchi pancake to go along with the banchan. It's very different from the pancakes in the city (Boston, Cambridge, Somerville). It was cut into rectangles and much crispier. Totally different texture. As for the banchan, YUM! All the spicy hot was perfect for the weather and my soaking wet butt! I still feel bad for making their seat soaking wet. Apparently, Burton dry fit isn't that dry!

A hidden gem This place was really, really authentic Korean. I had the kimchi pancakes and the bulgogi. very homemade. Don't be scared off by the exterior, this is a place you should try if you're looking for adventure in cuisine. Tomorrow night I will be going back for some noodles. the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because they don't take my corporate Amex card. Great food, looking forward to taking my wife here when I go back.

I don't write many reviews (two in my lifetime?), but this restaurant deserves a 5-star round of applause. I'm no expert in Korean dishes, but I've been to the home country 3-4 times and the food at Woo Jung Restaurant is as authentic as any i've experienced outside of Korea. The spicy tofu-and-pork soup (#26) was energetically seasoned, true to the real deal. A second dish we sampled, battered chicken with fried rice (#13?), is crispy, hearty, and offers an ideal option for patrons with less passion for pungent Korean flavors. We learned that the chef ("grandfather" of this family-owned enterprise) was a restaurateur in Korea before moving to the US. There are now three generations working in the restaurant. Thank you Woo Jung for an outstanding experience far from home.

I've been to Seoul, South Korea and this is the best Korean food in the area I've had since I've came back.

  • Mike G.

Absolutely fantastic, authentic Korean food in an unassuming, off-the-beaten-path location. I've been going here for over a decade and am still excited every time. The whole menu is great, but my go-tos are Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Kim Bob, Yaki Man Doo, scallion pancakes and Gan Poong Gi. They are reliable for takeout, but the dining in experience is also quite enjoyable - if you are adventurous, try the communal table where you will sit cross-legged on the floor (on cushions) with unknown neighbors. Woo Jung is a family business and every member of the family pitches in, is friendly and professional. I'm very fortunate to have this only one town away!

  • C.S. P.

This is one of my favorite places in the area for a sit-down restaurant. The food is fresh and the menu is nice. I enjoy the spicy battered chicken the most. The only complaint is the dining room is a tad small, but who cares when the food is as good as it is. Highly recommended!

For me, this was a classic case of 'following the crowd' for lunch. When I went to this place back in November of 2013, it was absolutely packed. Now I don't claim to know the history of this building, but I definitely got a 'dentist' vibe from the building design. Regardless, the meal I had was nothing short of transcendent. I ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice, a simple dish that the folks at Woo Jung Restaurant have perfected. I came back in February only to find the building was closed that the time. Never in my life had I experienced such a soul-crushing defeat.

Bibimbap for the win! Mapo tofu was super oily and lacked flavor.

I've been coming here for 15 years now after being introduced to it by friends. Everything everyone is commenting on is amazing!!!!!! Bibimbap (we call it food in a bowl), Bulgogi, Yaki Man Doo, scallion pancakes. The owners are great, friendly people. It is crave-able food at it's finest.

Absolutely wonderful! Scallion pancakes and bibimbap are incredible. The customer service is top-notch.

I was in the area to hang out with one of the Walden Pond crew that I used to hang with, nursing a particularly nasty cold so figured that I should try this place out. I only ordered the Beef noodle soup, figuring the dish might help clear up the congestion. The flavor was ok, but there was barely any meat of any type in the soup, just a few strips of vegetables and a lot of seasoning...I did appreciate the little dishes of Kim Chi and other pickled stuff that comes with every meal. But from my dish alone, I can't really say this place was that great, my friend seemed to like her Bim Bap Bo? But apparently the place does get a decent amount of business, its probably one of the more authentic Asian restaurants outside of 495 for sure. I will come back for a more complete review and bring a whole crew and be able to get a more complete picture of the menu...

Was traveling for business and the group I was with will not eat at chains. This was our last night in the area and it ended up being our best night. Woo Jung is a "dry" restaurant, but they will direct you to a couple places to purchase and bring in your adult beverages. From appetizers to main course, the food and service were fantastic. Looking forward to returning to this restaurant the next time I am in the area.

  • Ken A.

Decor isn't the best, but the food is awesome every time we go there to get food the place is packed. We order lunch from restaurants often at work and have never been dissatisfied with Woo Jung. Woo Jung's food has big portions and big taste.

Really good authentic Korean food. Family run and friendly place. Have tried most things on their menu and dined in the restaurant and have done take out as well. You get a lot of food with your order and most items are great to share with family and friends.

Great lunch spot if your working in the area. Food is very good and comes out fast. It gets packed at lunch time though because its awesome so be prepared to wait if you come in during lunch/dinner rush.

When I was little, my family and I would eat at Woo Jung at least two times a month. It's where I learned to love the spicy, flavorful food of Korean cuisine. I've moved away from the area for a while now and was nervous on a trip back. Would my memories of Woo Jung be completely destroyed after all this time? Happily and surprisingly not. It's still the same small, family-owned and operated restaurant with amazing food and fantastic service. Hats off to the people of Woo Jung for maintaining the amazingly high quality after all these years. Must try: Jam Bong, Zucchini and scallion pancakes

I've been coming here for at least 20 years and its still my favorite Korean Restaurant anywhere. The quality has always been the best. Now that I live in southern California Woo Jung is always one of my first stops when I am back in MA visiting.

Eaten there consistently for over 7 years. Quality food, low hassle, decent prices. Best Korean food in the area. I highly recommend it to try at least once.. If you are going on a busy evening (friday-sat for instance) call for a reservation it gets busy...

  • Peter C.

One of the best hidden gems in the area. Korean take out food that's top notch. Always fresh and excellent! Kimchee is a great side. There always seems to be more than enough. Not a lot of seats so it fills up quick if your eating in the Resturant. Make sure not to mis the scallion pancake. Best around! They could easily be in a larger and nicer location, but it works!

I've yet to find another korean restaurant this good! small , family run place. You'll never find better korean in central ma. gyoza, bulgogi, bimbap. Amazing.

  • samiam i.

Some if the best food in the area regardless of ethnicity. Of course that's a bit of a relative statement given the location, but this place really is good. How busy this place is a testament to how good it is. The kimchi pancakes are particularly awesome, but I've enjoyed everything I've tried. It is family run and welcoming. It is a small with regular sitting but also has some low tables for traditional sit on the floor sitting. It is BYOB. Takeout works well too. Highly recommended (regardless of location).

Once you've tried it you will not be able to resist coming back. Have been going to Woo Jung's restaurant for over 10 years and currently drive an hour to get there and order extra so I can have it the next day! Hidden gem in the area (get up the courage to walk through the door) and you'll be greeted with amazing food, great service and a lifelong addiction! Personal favorites are the bulgogi and bibimbap - also don't forget to order extra kim chi!!

Home cooked meals. Excellent dishes made with care. Delicious pickles and tea. A culinary treat. A true diamond in a haystack.

  • Cindy W.

This place is a hidden gem most defiantly. Tucked away in Ayer this place is small so please if you have a big group, like more than 5, give them a call in advance. They can hold about 30 people at most. Great food and you can't beat the price of your Korean grandmothers cooking. Yummy...and I can't wait to go back and eat more.

  • Catherine W.

Craving Korean food, so picked up takeout here. I was thrilled that they included panchan with our order (at least 9 different small containers including some delicious versions of kimchi). Tried the Palboa Chae (mixed seafood), Side of Noodles, Bi Bim Bap, Pa Jun, which totaled about $40. Will definitely try again.

I feel like I'm giving away the best known secret in town by writing such a positive review, but I feel compelled to spread the news! Don't be fooled by the no frills exterior of this tiny restaurant. It is by far one of the best Korean places I've experienced! I didn't realize how difficult it was to find great short ribs around here, but I need to search no more! The Bulgogi was exceptional and the Gyoza was a wonderful appetizer. It IS a BYOB place, so grab that bottle of wine from your stash and head on over with a couple of your favorite friends and enjoy!

Hands down the BEST Korean food I have had ever. I don't want to write anything else but just that. I promise you that this is beautifully made food and it is fresh and has great flavor.

  • Alison T.

Have been going here for the past 21 years. Great service, owners are very friendly and always remember you and your order. The atmosphere may seem awkward or small, but the food makes up for the small space. Favorites of ours: scallion pancakes, black bean noodles, meatless fried rice, seafood noodles, and pork patties. Go here for lunch or dinner, you will not be disappointed. Prices have obviously increased within the past few years but the food remains worth the extra money.

Pros - Great authentic Korean Food Kimshi is provided with your dinner Great and friendly service Takeout is available HUGE portions so be ready for that Authentic floor seating is available Kid friendly Clean and tidy location Cons - Hidden location No beer or wine No soda machine, just cans of Coke products This place is a great casual stop and we will be back.

I didn't sit in the actual restaurant, I had take out and it was to die for. I had bulgogi with rice and it was honestly the best I've ever tasted. i'm already craving it again!

This place has the best Korean food around, if you're American or Asian-American. We love it. I brought Koreans here and the food was too salty and too sweet for them. The atmosphere is wanting, but you just can't beat the food. It has no alcohol and no dessert. I wish they did not use MSG.

  • Ashley A.

Wow. I've eaten here a few times so I shouldn't sound surprised. Truth be told, the shock has worn off -- but the great experience lingers as I write this. This is truly one of the best Asian restaurants I have ever dined in anywhere (and I've been all over). Flavorful, fresh ingredients grace every dish -- from the terrific noodle soups to the casseroles and other main courses. I'm eager to have an excuse to go to Ayer just so I can eat out at this place. Wow.

Three words... Bi Bim Bab. Now the restaurant itself, not that hot. But order that one dish, and you are in heaven.

The best Jam bong and homemade dumplings. Plus you cannot beat the value compared to the inner city restaurants and the food is much better.

I have lived in Los Angeles, Berkeley, and New York and frequented amazing Korean restaurants in all of those places and others beside -- a terrific joint in Vancouver, Canada comes to mind -- but this place is right up there wih the best of them. In fact I really don't think I can say I've ever had better Korean food. In Ayer, of all places. Between this and Bangkok Hill in Lunenburg, I'm pretty much set -- I rarely go to Thai or Korean any more when I'm in New York, because I know it's not going to get much better than this. As everyone else says, Woo Jung doesn't look like much from outside, but once you get indoors, the cozy atmosphere, friendly service and above all the mind-blowingly delicious food will quickly push all other considerations from your mind. The portions are big, and you will be contending with some awesome kimchi and other banchan before you even get your appetizers and main courses, but don't be afraid to over-order, because that way you can relive the taste experience the next day -- and believe me, you will want to. Speaking of big portions, start with the scallion (or kimchi) pancakes -- you won't regret it.

Probably the best Korean food outside of Koreatown LA I have had. It is really an unassuming place in an out of the way town. The menu has standard Korean food, the service is friendly and helpful. The panchan is outstanding! Very flavorful and very approachable for newbies to Korean food. We cleared our dishes quickly and were offered more. The bul go gi was tender and had a great flavor. The kal bi were cooked perfectly and had a great smoked flavor too. The bi bum bop was also very good. My only knock would be that there isn't a dol sot (sizzling bowl) version of the bi bim bop. The portions were generally huge as well. You better believe I will be back soon.

Woo Jung doesn't look like much from the outside; beige colored building, few windows tucked back from the road. Even when you walk in it is no frills. It seems unchanged from when we first moved to Ft Devens in 1987. If you entered the restaurant, you may be questioning if you really want to eat here. But if you walk in at the right time, you see a mass of military personnel. Then you get it. This place is legit. The food is phenomenal, between my parents and I, we have sampled a fair amount of the menu. I don't think there is anything that I didn't enjoy. We each have our favorites (Kim bob, pa jun, yaki man doo, bulgo gi, jab chae). The kimchi is the best I have had. If they were to have an all you can eat kimchi special, I would leave them with nothing. Portions are large and prices are quite reasonable. Service has always been good, regardless of how busy they are.

Just got take out from this place. Got the #20, spicy "tempura" chicken with meatless fried rice, it was HORRIBLE... we took two bites each and had to throw the rest out. $16 down the drain and no sunday night dinner, pretty disappointing to say the least. What was suppose to be pieces of chicken tempura was soggy, rubbery and inedible. The whole dish was soaked in a disgusting orange oil, literally soaking in it. Maybe they have 3 or 4 go to dishes but I would avoid pretty much anything else off the menu aside from the things you see mentioned on here over and over again...theres obviously a reason people only order the same 3 things again and again. We made the mistake of trying to expand, def. will not be back, they lost our business.

I've lived in the Ayer area most of my life and passed this little hole in the wall hundreds of times and assumed it was a dive based on the exterior. Then a couple years ago, one of my Korean friends asked me to meet her there for lunch and told me she would introduce me to the wonders of Korean food, and not to be dramatic or anything, but my life has pretty much never been the same. First of all, I can't believe I have so many Korean friends and was not introduced to kimchi until I was in my 20s. What the heck, people! Kimchi is fermented veggies, usually cabbage. If you haven't tried it before, you need to try it now. Woo Jung serves it the way American restaurants serve bread before the main meal, and if you get take out they give you tons of it to go, too. I am a vegetarian so I typically order their Bibimbap with tofu instead of beef. For the uninitiated, bibimbap is a giant dish of rice, veggies, beef (or tofu), topped off with a fried egg and chili sauce. You basically pour the sauce on top to your liking and stir everything together into messy amazingness. I also love Woo Jung's Pa Jun (Korean Scallion pancakes). They are thicker and more like a pancake than the Chinese food variety, and Woo Jung has a scallion version and a kimchi version. About six months ago, the hubby and I went to New York City and spent a couple of nights in Korea town and of course had to check out the Korean food there. I can safely say Woo Jung's food is just as good, if not better, than what we had in Korea town. Compared to Chinese takeout, Woo Jung is definitely pricier. When we do takeout from there two entrees and an app end up costing around $40. But the portion sizes are ridiculously huge. You easily get 2-3 meals out of what you buy, and they give you tons of kimchi, too, so it is worth it. If you are like me and have driven by hundreds of times and never stopped in, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Glad I went early! This is the type of place that you would never consider stepping foot into unless you truly knew the quality of the food inside. Look at all of the other reviews, nothing to exagerate about here. We got there around 1150 on a Friday, right before the lunch rush. Sat at our table and immedaitely got tea, water and 5 different little dishes of kimchi and other great things (The one with cukes was excellent... crisp and tasty). We ordered different meals, I had the Bi Bim Bap (#19) and it was great. Everything was so fresh and tasty, perfectly cooked. Definitely hit the spot! The other meals that my colleagues had looked equally as tasty and based on their comments they were. This is the type of place that hasn't spent tons of money to turn the business into what it is not. The owners and employees are friendly, helpful and the chefs do an amazing job! I am certainly going back there soon, and would actually drive out of my way to go there in the future! Only downside was that when we left there was a line our the door... That is truly a sign of great food :)

When you want to talk about hidden gems, you can go right ahead and add Woo Jung to the list. We finally visited after several years of hearing only positive things. I think we were a little intimidated, having never tried Korean food before. But after tonight, I can proudly say I'm a fan. Based on several recommendations here, we ate in and ordered just a few traditional dishes: the Pa Jun (scallion pancake) appetizer, Bibimbap (we got fried rice instead of steamed), and Jab Chae (clear noodles with pork and veggies). Wow. So everything was excellent. The bibimbap was the clear winner - breaking the yolk of the fried egg and mixing it all into the meat and veggies and rice...heaven. We really liked the scallion pancakes too - thicker than the Chinese style, crispy on the outside and soft inside, chock full of scallion goodness. I really liked the Jab Chae as well - mild in flavor and the noodles had an interesting texture - but my husband wasn't crazy about it. Likewise, I realized with some dismay that I'm not into kimchi, but my husband really enjoyed it. Service was perfect - friendly, good pace, nothing rushed, kept our water filled - you can't ask for much more than that. We got in just after 430 and when we left the place was almost full, with a steady stream of calls for takeout. The only reason I took off 1 star (because I really wanted to give it 5) was for the prices. For example, the Pa Jun was $11, the same price as some of the entrees (of which those ranged upwards to $20). Granted, you get a good amount of food, really yummy food, but two entrees and an appetizer ran us $40 (before a well-deserved full tip).

Small place and building looks like it needs some work BUT with awesome food. Our first Korean food experience. Had a friend help us order but was totally worth it. Can't wait to go again.

I love this place and wish it was located closer to my home. Parking can be difficult, so I often take out the food. Don't let the exterior of the restaurant fool you, the food can't be beat! I hope they never close and pass down the recipes to later generations to run the restaurant.

A few of the factors that weigh heavily on the "AWESOME" side of the Good-Bad scale are as follows; The building is deceivingly tiny, set-back, and looking for a face-lift. How does this help Woo Jung? Because it's the age old lesson of 'Not judging a book by it's cover' getting thrown back in our faces! It ain't a crummy Chinese-American nightmare, it's that real-deal Korean, baby! The biggest selling point here is the kimchi. BIG fan of it, not always pleased when I do get it. It's a full spread of kimchi dishes, and Woo Jung hits the nail right on the head, and continues pounding away long after as they bring out as much as you and your table can handle. This onslaught of fermented bliss is worth the trip alone. The rest of the menu stays true to it's Korean roots. Authentic, home-style recipes. All I have tried has been fantastic. Calm and collected staff. The fried rice is fresh, moist, and rich in flavor. Refreshing tea to wash it all down.

Surprised to find this place out here. Ordered bim bim bop and kimchee pancakes to go. So happy they didn't skimp on all the great korean side dishes. Food was delicious and staff very friendly. Highly recommended.

This may seem like an extreme statement but here goes... Woo Jung may be the best restaurant in the world. Don't let the building throw you off the food will bring you to your knees. Gang poong gi bab is my personal favorite but you can't go far wrong with anything on the menu. If you eat inside you can get a traditional experience and eat on the floor. Great place I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

I really wanted to like Woo Jung but.... This place actually has a pretty extensive menu for a place its size. Some of the house specialties are Korean-Chinese dishes like tangsooyuk and jajangmyuk. Personally I prefer the traditional Korean dishes like kalbi, bulgoki, bokum's, jigae/chigae (choose your transliteration). They offer a decent selection of options in both areas which was great to see. The mandoo's were not good for a couple reasons. The size of the dumpling versus the amount of filling was off. They were mostly hollow deep fried dough pockets with a very small amount of meat filling. I would have preferred if the filling was fleshed out with cabbage or Asian chive....just to get the actual dumpling totally filled. Secondly they had the taste and aroma of old burnt oil. This was also the problem with scallion pajun (pancake) as well. Although it first seemed tasty - crunchy on the outside and doughy in the center, it had that burnt oil odor and taste in the background. They served a heaping portion of jap chae which was good - albeit a little bland. I got something called "La Jo Gi" with rice. It was described as a "breaded" chicken in a spicy stir fry with vegetables. It was heavily starched pieces of fried chicken with vegetables in the saltiest, least spiciest sauce. It was crazy salty and had no other flavor to it and was difficult to finish as a result. The staff was nice and the place is cute but It just wasn't working out. The jap chae saved this from being a one star review.

The first time I experienced Korean food was when I lived in Hawaii nearly 20 years ago. To this day I crave to taste the wonderful little dishes of cucumbers, sprouts and kimchee and cellophane noodles. Living in Northern Central MA, good luck finding Korean food! But alas I recalled there was a Korean restaurant outside of Devens and wondered if it was still there. Much to my surprise, indeed it was! I finally got my fiance to head out to Ayer for his first experience with Korean food. Knowing what to expect for flavors I was more than happy...finally reliving those flavors I was first introduced to more than 20 years ago. My fiance, was extremely surprised at how much he liked the food. Most especially the little relish bowls sporting of a variety of interesting yet yummy flavors. The place is small, but clean, great service and most importantly good quite authentic Korean food!

I have not dined here yet but have gotten takeout many times. I work close by and my order is usually ready 10 minutes after I hang up the phone from ordering the food. The restaurant is very small, but the food is excellent! My favorite dish is the bugolgi which comes with bulgogi (marinated beef), vegetable fried rice and 5 sides (kimchi, and pickled bean sprouts, cucumber, cabbage, and radish). I usually order during lunch hours so the bulgogi would be cheaper ($13) because for dinner it's about $3 more. Although the bulgogi is expensive, the portions are HUGE!!! I can't eat the whole thing in one meal..I would need to eat it for 2 meals because the portions are so huge. My food is always fresh and warm when I pick it up. I highly recommend this place as a takeout restaurant. It's not really good for groups because it's very small, but if you're dining with one or two people, that's okay.

Great little find in Ayer for Korean food! We usually go for lunch and I love the Bibimbap with white rice. They bring out Kimchi and tea and have a broad menu. Everything is good and fresh and the run a great little business in a very "non-fancy" setting. You an bring your own beer/wine last I checked but we have not done this in a while. My go to restaurant when craving Bibimbap!

Always a great place to eat. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. You don't have to go to Boston to get the best Korean food around.

This place is just okay. After spending a year in South Korea eating mainly Korean food I have been disappointed again and again in the US with Korean food. I ordered the pajeon () but mind you it was only a scallion pancake it did not have seafood. I also order bulgogi and that was decent tasting it came with fried rice. In addition the panchan (side dishes) were plentifuly. After reading some reviews about this place I really hope this is not as good as it gets for Korean food in New England.

SO much better than your typical Chinese Fare. Dishes from Bulgogi, (Korean Teriyaki Beef), Kimchee Ji Gi, Mandu, (Korean Dumplings), Pa Jun, (Scallion Pancakes), Chicken Tempura with a Honey Glaze...all the different kinds of Kimchee with every meal, BiBim Bap...you really can't go wrong. When a Korean Restaurant is filled with happy Koreans, you know you have a good thing. Near Fort Devens in Ayer, MA...a MUST try!

  • Kay J.

We enjoyed the traditional Korean food: bi bim bap & squid dish. The small bowls of kim chi etc served before the meal are welcomed. My only suggestion is to serve the bi bim bap in hot stone bowls so that the rice on the bottom gets crusty. No ambiance - just reasonably priced good food.

Thanks to Yelp for this little gem. All of the reviews were right on. There are not that many choices in the area. A lovely family greeted us and we started with one of the big soups, short ribs that were fantastic. But the chicken that was mentioned on Yelp, was literally to die for. Lightly fried with minimal breading, it was in a golden honey- florally-citrus, delacate souce that I am still dreaming of. We were only 3 and with the rice that came with the dish, we had more than plenty. Although I read that the place was small, it was not cramped at all and was very bright and pleasantly stark. A must if you are nearby or want to take a drive.

Go here! I tried it for the first time when a friend invited me over for Korean food and honestly couldn't stop thinking about it until I dragged my husband on the 45 minute drive to the restaurant the following week. The week after that, I happened to be in the area and really had a long, hard debate with myself on whether it would be acceptable to get takeout from here for 3 consecutive weeks. I decided against it but was really regretting my choice for the rest of the night. Anyways, back to the food.... The kimchi, bean sprouts and cucumbers and whatever the other little appetizers they bring out/pack with take out are soooo good! like nothing I've ever had before! And, definitely get the bi bim bap! The beef is seasoned perfectly and that combined with the rice and vegetables with the egg over easy (which I actually normal despise) on top is really tasty... even if it sounds weird, the egg definitely brings it all together! I also like the chicken stir fry, I think mainly because I like the sauce from the stir fry on the rice. This one isn't nearly as good as the bi bim bap and probably other things they offer, I just haven't had the opportunity to try other things yet.... but, I will!

I was recently back in the Fort Deven's area and was able to stop by Woo Jung for a quick lunch. The food or service has not changed! The best Korean food in New England, period! Highly Recommend.

I will have to expand on this later ... BUT the mandoo here is exceptional! The meat wrapper is also homemade!!! I've been going there since I was a little girl ... like 15 years ago? At least it seems that long ago! Update: 3-20-09 This place has been open for 19 years!!! and counting! I recently went here for dinner, and ordered the large mandoo order (10 pcs) and then la jo ki (batter spicy chicken) and bulgogi ... and my friend I finished between the 2 of us!!! Sooooooo good! I also thought it was amazing that this place has not changed a bit since I have been going there from my childhood times! I like that about places I love! Nothing should change :) Oh, one other tidbit ... it's BYOB for those who drink (I don't... I stick to the tea :) )

By far the best Korean food you will find anywhere in the Northeast! Huge portions, fresh ingredients, friendly service.. and most importantly, finger-licking, lip-smackingly delicious. When they start you off with a complimentary 'appetizer' plate which has like about six varieties of kimchee and other condiment-type items, you know you are in for a treat. And it only gets better from that point on. The glass noodles and bulgogi are personal favorites, but I live around here and have never heard a bad thing said about anything here. Well worth the drive out from Boston.

This place is a hidden jewel in the middle of a little town like Ayer. I went here today for lunch with my coworkers. I also came here a few times in the past. This place is always packed and never changes its quality. It is small. Food is always good. If you want to eat here, come around 11:30AM. Otherwise, expect a wait. I always have the Bi Bimp Bab here....It is excellent!

Oh Woo Jung....sweet, sweet Woo Jung. This review is overdue by about thirteen years, which is honestly how long I have been frequenting Woo Jung. This place is quite simply delicious: a true gem in an area somewhat lacking in culinary diversity. I should warn would-be patrons that the atmosphere is simple and unadorned. It sort of resembles a double wide-trailer, and the interior decor is not much more dignified. Perhaps not the best place to take the Queen of England or nit-picky in laws, but this is entirely okay. I return again and again not for the atmosphere, but for the delicious food and friendly service that awaits me each and every time. There are so many delicious items on the menu it's difficult to know where to begin. I am partial to several dishes, and find myself ordering them almost every time: - Kim Bob (Essentially Korean sushi) -Pa Jun (Pan-Fried Pork dumplings) -Kim Bob (A delicious beef dish---a house speciality) -Ja Jang Bab (Fried Rice with a Pork and Soy based sauce) There are many other options, as well, and I highly recommend moving beyond these basic suggestions. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong. Every meal is also served with complimentary dishes of Kim Chi---traditional Korean pickled vegetables. Do not be offended by the smell, because it's wonderful, much better than it sounds. The service at Woo Jung is also extremely friendly. I have not lived in Massachusetts for over six years, but the owner still knows me by my first name, and always asks how things are going when I come in. It is small courtesies like this that set Woo Jung apart. In conclusion, five stars. It's a little pricier than it used to be, but food prices have gone up and large portions await you. So, if you're looking for something new, check it out! You won't be disappointed.

Stopped here without knowing anything about it and was pleasantly surprised. Like others say, not much to look at from the outside, but neat and clean inside, accommodating staff, and very good Korean food. Had the Jam Bong (spicy pork and seafood soup over noodles).

My favorite Korean restaurant! I've tried the Bulgogi, Kimchee Ji Gi, Mandu, Pan Jun (shut yo-mouth good), Chicken Tempura, different kinds of Kimchee and my typical main course is the Bi Bim Bob. I always get take out when I'm done so I have some kimchee to take home. The staff is friendly, the decor is probably the same as it was when they opened 19+ years ago. It's really small and site probably 20/30 people. There's also a table that you can take your shoes off and sit on the floor at. I always enjoy going here, and I'm sure I'll be back again soon.

Woo Jung is a FANTASTIC korean restaurant!! Great food, great people, great service, great atmosphere. The food is a little bit pricey, but the portions are also bigger; hence, it's worth the price! Also it is BYOB, which is awesome! Woo Jung gets pretty crowded on weekends, so be sure to come early since parking is a bit tight!

I have only been here for lunch, but this place is incredible! There's about fifteen lunch specials -- all under $10. Lunch is served with a complimentary egg drop soup with snippets of green onions, plus about five tiny bowls of Kim-chi. I have ordered about half the lunch items, and all are terrific. The place gets crowded around noon, so if you're coming for lunch, get there early. Terrific food, great prices... What's not to love?

  • Lee D.

I get serious cravings for their fresh yummy pickled dish condiments (cukes, beansprouts, turnip, kimchee, american kimchee, etc, etc)! I could be happy just making a meal out of those! So good!! I've slowly been making my way thru the various items on the menu, but so far my favorite dishes have continually been the Bi Bim Bop and the scallion pancakes. Their scallion pancakes are kind of more like real pancakes....chock full of scallions absorbed within a thicker style pancake. Really tasty and the portion is huge, so have typically always had some left to take home. Surprisingly, the scallion pancakes taste just as good or better the next day, so order away! The decor is simple, but I also found the place warm and inviting, mostly due to the gracious hosts waiting on you. They also have 2 large sunken tables good for groups. Typically their spicy isn't super spicy and they will admit it. But with a challenged twinkle in their eye, and perhaps an appreciation that you want a more traditional spicy, they are more than happy to up it to your liking if you let them know!

I love this place my boyfriend and I have been going to this place for about 6 years the owners are so nice the food is great and well I love the different ban chans (side dishes)they give to us ... Anybody ever had Korean BBQ before you need to try their Kalbi Gogi (short ribbed Korean BBQ) it's off the hook just wished that we lived closer to this place :( the food does bring back childhood memories often my Grandmothers cooking yummy :D

Always enjoy my meal here. Kimchi and other starters are a great start to the meal. Personally I'm not a huge soup fan so tend to stick to the noodle dishes. Furniture has been recently upgraded slightly elevating its hole in the wall status!

Good dishes. Take-out comes with little cups of kimchi. Some of the food has been a little heavy but I like to eat here when I can. Looking forward to trying out more of the menu (and here's hoping they can some day post one online)

I've been going here for over 15 years and the quality has remained the same...great!! I love this place. It is a definitely a hidden gem. I have been taking my sons here since they were born and they crave the food. We've tried other Korean restaurants but none compare.

Odd to find such a good Korean restaurant out in Ayer, MA. It's quite good though. Everything I've tried is authentic and tasty. My favorite is the beef short ribs. It's really yummy. The side dishes are good, too. The prices and portions are reasonable. The owners are friendly and nice. My family has been there so often that they know what we like.

Despite its external appearance, this place has great Korean food. I ate here 2-3 times per week for about two months while I was working in Devens. I've had just about everything on the menu, and would recommend the Bulgo Gi, although everything was very good. The only downside is that they really don't do much in the way of spicy food, and I generally like my food extremely spicy. However, everything is so good that it almost doesn't matter.

  • Johann G.

Love the Kimchee, portions were generous and what more can you say when half the clients are Korean. You want authentic Korean with fast friendly service this is the place. Ignore the exterior and get adventurous. 4 1/2 stars!!

Love the Kim Chee Pancakes and the Bip Bim Bop. My fellow Foodies don't miss the Jam Bong, especially on a freezing cold winter day. The folks that work there are great. Get there early for lunch to get a table!

Was here for the first time recently, and was impressed by the food. The kimchi comes first (I beleive complementary) and is outstanding. This is definitely a no frills kind of place , the food is flavorful and everything is very fresh and prepared correctly. Its a very small space that can fill quick. There is really nothing bad to say about this place unless you go to a restaurant to look at decor. I go to restaurants for food and thats why this place is great.

I don't eat Koren food much because I am slightly afraid of it. I just don't know it well enough to dive on in, but we said why the hell not and tried this place out. Holy crap, this food is awesome! Again, afraid of Kimchee, I've never tried it until now. It was so flavorful and had the perfect amount of spiciness. They even gave you free refills on any of their 5 options. Why have I waited this long? Oh, probably because my parents never introduced me to anything remotely ethnic. I had to do it all on my own when I moved out of the house into the melting pot of the Bay Area, Alameda. We had the Bulgo gi and the pork soup with beef and veggies. It was all to die for. The flavors are so intriguing and deep. My soup, although looked really spicy, it again had the perfect spice. I was so happy with the food! It's a very small place and when we arrived 15-minutes after they opened it was already pretty full. That tells you something about a restaurant.

One of my favorite places to eat. I have been eating here for over 13 years. Very cozy and clean inside, the staff is very friendly. The kimchi is delicious. I have never had a bad meal here! Everything is wonderful! You know it's the real thing when you walk in and see many of the Korean families in the community eating here. This is always the case. My favorites to order is the Kimbap rolls and the bulgogi (sp?) is the best i have ever had. It is great for larger parties, but call ahead. It is a very small place. They do have a really large low table available with pillows on the floor in place of chairs. It is a bit out of the way and private, a very relaxing way to dine. It seats, I'd say from memory, maybe 20? Like i said, call ahead though. It is a small, non-chain, family operated place. They are closed on Monday, open til 9pm. Although they do not serve alcohol, they allow you to bring your own. They even provided us with wine glasses and an opener! Everyone needs to eat here! LOVE Woo Jung!

I'm not expert on Korean cuisine, so I can't comment on the authenticity. I can, however, say that the food was delicious, the service was prompt and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. The high percentage of Asian customers probably says something about the authenticity.

Absolutely amazing authentic Korean food. The selection is huge and the staff is always accomodating if you want to try some variations. Great portions and it's always fun to bring the kids and sit on the floor!

This place has great Korean noodle dishes. Their ja jang myung is as good as I have had it outside of the Washington D.C. area where there is a plethora of good Korean restaurants. I have been going there for at least 8 years and they have been consistent in quality. I would recommend this place highly but beware of the no frills atmosphere.

  • Rob W.

The short version: Go here. Eat Korean food. You will be glad you did. The long version: I grew up eating authentic Korean food that my mother and grandmother would cook and we have all been here to eat several times. Their food is incredible! Not only do they have delicious, authentic dishes, they have Americanized versions of some very popular dishes (so you can bring picky eaters, too!). This is a small family owned restaurant that pours love into every dish they serve. Lunch hours can get pretty busy, but you can usually get a seat for dinner. I usually order take out because everyone in my family loves this food and they only have one large table (otherwise they have to push several smaller tables together to seat everyone). The prices and servings are fair and their ingredients are all fresh and delicious. I highly recommend this hidden gem to anyone passing by, but more to those who feel up to an adventure out of the city. You will not be disappointed! Boston has plenty of outstanding Korean restaurants, but this is right up top with the best of them! For my fellow allergenic, food frontiersmen, fear not! This place is aware, well informed, and very serious about this sort of stuff. If you have a food allergy, let them know and they will take care of you.

I go to Woo Jungs when I haven't had mom's Korean Cooking in a while. The food is not as good as mom's but is it ever! LOL! I love this place and have been going for a long time. I have read posts regarding they can't believe it's in Ayer. When I was living in Fort Devens back in the 80's there was an abundance of Korean people at the base who married american soldiers. The area's korean population was high which also is the reason why there are 2 Korean food stores in Ayer also. What I do wish Woo Jungs had is a Korean BBQ.

This is hands down the best Korean food in the state. I've only had better in NYC and Seoul. Who cares if the place is a dump in a terrible location? The food is so damn good, it's worth the drive.

A random restaurant that sits all by itself on the side of a street that serves some of the best Korean food outside of Los Angeles and my mom's kitchen. The ja jang myun (noodles with black soybean paste) here is excellent, as is the tang soo yook (Korean sweet and sour pork/chicken/beef). My parents never go out to eat, since my mom makes Korean food all the time and she's a great cook, but they are totally willing to drive out and eat here. I should mention that they're really picky about their Korean food, too, so the fact that they like it here is a big plus! Fast, no fuss service. They have take-out...not sure about delivery (pretty sure they don't). Just down the street is a Korean grocery store if you feel inspired to make your own Korean food at home!

This was my first taste of Korean food. So I really don't think I can judge how it stands up against other Korean food. I did like the food but don't like it as much as Chinese food. I need try a few more items.

Woo Jung has the BEST Korean food in MA/Boston area. Koreana in Cambridge does not even compare! I'm Korean and have been to Korea and this is the most authentic you will find. I live in Boston and will travel 45 minutes out there to have a decent Korean meal.

Very good food. I bring my daughters to have lunch here during vacation week when we've made no travel plans. Its like a treat for us. First comes the little complimentary pickled dishes, one of which I know is called kimchee. (They are used like condiments, I believe, but we treat them as little appetizers.) Our entrees are very good portions, and after we have our fill, we always have leftovers to bring home. We haven't yet ordered anything that we haven't liked. Friendly and attentive service. The decor is very low key, but that's all right. I'd they keep the prices low than putting money into doing up their decor!

Disappointed is the word to describe my experience here. After spending a year in South Korea I fell in love with Korean food. I don't think there is a restaurant in the United States that will match the food in Korea. I was excited to try this place after reading the reviews here. The bulgogi was terrible. The kimchi was pretty good.

This is a hidden gem. I think its a family run operation. Wish the decor was a little more upscale but the food is very good. Good value. This is Korean home cooking for takeout and dining in.

I absolutely think this is one of the best Korean restaurants in the area. I am picky with Korean food but this place never seems to disappoint me. They are decent on prices, excellent waitstaff, great for groups, superb food. Even though the decor is not appealing and up-to-date, the food makes up for it. A very small & cozy stop off W Main Street. Kimchi is always served, along with the yummy cabbage kimchi. My family & I are willing to drive the 45mins to eat here. And of course, we order take-out on the way out! I would recommend the: Cham Pohng (spicy noodles in seafood broth) Ja Jang Myun (black pean paste noodles) Tang Soo Yuhk (sweet & sour chicken/pork/beef) Kam Poong Gee (sweet crispy chicken) Yahng Jang Pee (mixture of vegs, seafood, in spicy hot mustard) Kim bab (rice wrapped in seaweed) Bohk Kum bab (fried rice) Now to think of it, I sound like i eat way too much. (=

My first experience with Korean food, I'm told by others that this is the best around (Someone who's been to Korea and drives 45min to eat here). I'm a big fan of the Bulgogi and Tempura Chicken. Closed Mondays and only open for Lunch on Tuesdays. It's at bit on the expensive side, (about $15 for one meal) but generous portions and very good.

Tiny place with truly excellent Korean food. Great kimchi to start. Super friendly staff. Nice lunch spot, too. Inexpensive. Strange decor, and very, very brightly lit. Dimmers would help!
