Being from Louisiana, I think that I am a pretty good judge of its cuisine. On a recent trip back home, I was craving some good home-cooked cajun food and took a chance on one of those places you see listed on a billboard along I-10 between Lake Charles and Lafayette - called Cajun Tales. It was a delightful surprise. I ordered the crawfish half and half. It was a crawfish pie with crawfish etoufee and was absolutely delicious. There was a large amount of crawfish and they they were large - not those itty-bitty ones you get something at other places. The taste was spot on and the portions were Louisiana-hearty. The service was by ladies that you are not going to see hanging out at a country club, but would are the same ladies that will invite you in for ice tea if you stop and ask them for directions. They are down-home nice. One thing that struck me was the sense of community that this little town has. I overheard customers talking with what I assumed was high school kids working there, asking about their family, their schooling and their future. It was very sweet and indicative of what I grew up with in small-town Louisiana. I am looking forward to my next trip back home, because I already have my lunch-stop planned. If you are headed along I-10 West - watch out for the signs between Lake Charles and Lafayette. Stop and say hello to these lovely people and enjoy some of the best cajun food you are going to find.

HORRIFYING! I grew up in Welsh and used to frequent this establishment often. During a visit with family we decided to meet for dinner here. Upon walking in it was obvious that the establishment was busy and way understaffed. Full house and only 2 waitstaff, YES two!! We waited patiently to order but my husband and I chose the seafood platter to split. As we were waiting for our food a patron and her son were headed out the door and the little boy vomited right by our table. The mom panicked and told a waitress about the accident. We were HORRIFIED to hear the waitress tell her that she was too busy! The patron asked for some paper towels and we watched as she cleaned her own sons vomit. Never once was a mop passed or the area sanitized. We had lost most of our appetite however our food eventually arrived and we may as well eat. The food was sub-par, onion rings not as they described, seafood obviously frozen not fresh, and the gumbo tasted "off". I am so sad to see a hometown favorite of mine go down the tubes. From now on when I am in town visiting I will drive 10 more miles and done elsewhere.

This is not a super nice restaurant, but the food is DELICIOUS. We stopped and had the buffet, getting a taste of everything. The gumbo was good, my favorite was the crawfish au gratin and the hush puppies were yummy! Service is good, friendly.

A friend and I were driving from Houston to NOLA and found this little place on the way. "Mini seafood platter" is a complete misnomer......a lot of food for a very affordable price! The gumbo is better than average and their home made dressings really made me a fan of this place. Great wait staff!

I was a little leery about the place and we almost left because it was so filthy. The windows don't look they have been washed in years and the floors sat un swept the whole time we were there. The waitress took five minutes to get to our table, but she was very pleasant when she arrived. The cooks smoked out front and hung around visiting another table for a while. But if we put all of that aside, over all the service, serving size and quality of the food where outstanding. The food was fresh and not frozen from what I could tell. I probably won't be back because of the filth though.

Good Cajun food and friendly service. The owner is an LSU basketball fan.

If you're looking for the Denny's of cajun food, you've found your place with Cajun Tales. It simply isn't very good. I had the crawfish platter. It included boiled crawfish (it was soft and mushy,) crawfish etouffee (their etouffee is wrong, just wrong,) crawfish in a pastry (this was good, but unfortunately had the etouffee sauce poured over top,) and fried crawfish (this was the only dish of the four that was acceptable.) It also came with gumbo which I had to season to give it any noticeable flavor. I was very disappointed. It most definitely wasn't worth the calories!! BUT, if you must stop, I'd recommend a burger.

So we were looking to try something local and authentic, and my guess is that this is close. We went for lunch in the middle of the week and the parking lot was packed. As soon as we stepped in, it was clearly a locals place because we stuck out like a sore thumb. We ordered the fried gator and the crawfish etouffee, both were really good and I could tell they were cooked fresh. The server was the sweetest woman - we told her we just wanted to try something new and she just HAD to have us try three dishes from the buffet because she was so eager to share the local cuisine. We tried the seafood pasta (no pasta in there really, just seafood and cream! YUM!), fried catfish and a rice dish. All three were really good, so I'd recommend just getting the buffet if you stop by - it was $10 or $11 dollars and most everyone that came in seemed to go for the buffet.
