I found this place to be pretty tasty. I ordered a burrito with chicken, pico de gallo and avacado. The chips and salsa were alright, nothing special. The pico de gallo was great and full of fresh chunks of tomato, onion, jalapenos, and lots of cilantro. The burrito was tasty and very filling. The slices of fresh avacado were a nice addition too. Definitely a nice little mexican restaurant.

Two words... $5 Burrito as big as your HEAD! okay maybe that more like seven words. I don't even really like Mexican food usually but the burritos here are awesome and you can choose between "American" with tomatoes and lettuce or "Mexican" style with cilantro and onions. There are also a variety of meats that you can add along with vegetarian options. Just a warning they only accept cash so don't expect to be able to pay with a card...

Ok I have to let people know what a great place this really is. I have traveled across the country and Mexico for that matter and this place ranks right up there at the top for great tasting Mexican food. Not only is the food the real deal but the people that operate this place are the salt of the earth real genuine people that you just want to root for. This place is Churchill Downs. Other Mexican joints in the city and all the others are Keeneland. Churchill Is legendary . You get what you get. Rich, poor, pretty, ugly,it's come as you are and share the experience. Keeneland is great but the pretentious frat boy vibe is just a put off. The chicks in the impossibly short dresses when it's 25 degrees and the wind is howling is hilarious but not welcoming. Santa Fe is the churchill downs of Mexican food. They aren't trying to impress anyone because they already know they will. Do yourself a favor and visit this gem of a place that doesn't even have to try. It's that good.

Ah, the joys of the purple building! I love Santa Fe, I would say it is probably a 90% authentic place... Go a few doors down if you want to eat with no gringos. The food is fast and tasty, I would suggest getting everything Mexican not American style. The chips are fairly plain but the salsa is good. It is also super cheap! They just started taking credit cards too!

Had lunch there yesterday and went back for dinner tonight. Great meal both times. Was not expecting to find this style of authentic Mexican food next to the stadium and just a minute or so from the racetrack. The chips are more store-bought rounds than traditional style chips that one would normally get at a place like this - and as mentioned, there's enough for 4 people and the red sauce was good - not exceptional like the green tomatillio sauce that was served warm w/the chips. A couple of guys that were there for lunch had obviously been there before as the helped themselves to the 'to-go' containers to pack up the chips & salsa they couldn't finish. I had a combo of tamal, relleno & taco for lunch - very good & the al pastor (pork & grilled onions) for dinner. The flavor was very good. The rice was just a tad bit salty for my taste - the frioles refritos were great. Good service and a decent menu. I will be going back on my next trip to this city of the weird. Oh, and yes, the price was right! They do take credit cards

I only get their mexican style tacos and burritos (you can choose from three different styles, one other being american; i never bother with those because why go to an authentic mexican restaurant if you're not going to get something authentic?) and they are delicious. The rice is soft and the meats are fall-off-the-bone good. I'm not a fan of the enchilada style but that's just a personal taste so I can't speak to how they fare versus other restaurants. If you go be a little adventurous and get the lengua (beef tongue) on a taco. Best meat they have there. Other great (and less adventurous) meats are the carnitas (pulled pork, which can be hit or miss) and barbacoa (slow cooked beef, always good). Also the staff is some of the nicest people I've met in the restaurant business. The kind of nice where if you owe $6.10 (which is what the burrito costs after tax) they almost always just ask for $6.

My friend and I decided to go to lunch. I asked where he wanted to go and he said this Mexican restaurant across from the baseball stadium. I was so confused...but I decided to go along. We arrived at the restaurant and pulled up to a purple brick building. We walked in and the place was packed. I was surprised because I had never been to this restaurant. We found our seats and were greeted with salsa and chips. I decided to get the Con Queso Burrito American. It was amazing. The Queso was some of the best queso I have ever had. The burrito was as big as the plate and came out within 10 minutes of us ordering, very fast service. I really enjoyed my meal and will definitely be back. The price was great, I received a huge burrito for 7.00 and I had left overs to take home. If you are looking for a cheap Mexican spot, def. check this place down.

The food was good. The service was great. I'll definitely go back.

Came down to U of L for a track meet and we were looking for something quick, good and nearby. Check x 3. Great tacos and massive burrito. The free chips and salsa were forgettable but the tomatillo salsa brought out for my wife's burrito was awesome. Her burrito was so large she referred to it as a "double wide" (we're in KY). My "Mexican" tacos (preference these over "American") were simple but awesome. I had three different meats but the lengua was "lo mejor". Don't get turned off, just try it.

It's actually pretty good. Both gringo and authentic food :) It's packed at lunch time so take your time!

Sometimes I wonder how they stay in business with the absurd amounts of food served for the price- maybe it's the Spanish convenient store connected to the backside of this hole in wall. The drawback is definitely the quality of food served. Not much more can be expected for the price- but it definitely gets the job done. I always get the Mexican Style Burrito-it keeps me stuffed for the remainder of the day, whether it be lunch or dinner. The funniest thing about this restaurant has to be the chips and salsa. My favorite part of any Mexican restaurant is the chips and salsa, whereas Santa Fe only has only authentic salsa. For chips, they simply serve what I call "Stadium Chips." You know the nacho chips served at baseball/football/whatever games? Yeah, that's what you get here. Last thing: CASH ONLY!!!!

    (3)
  • Kelly N.

I go once a week. Best in Louisville. Like others said, cash only. And they keep your bill at the counter, so just walk up and tell them what you had. Quirky place but the food is tops.

  • Lianna N.

Nice cozy joint with great Mexican food closer to the authentic side and less with the cheese.

    (4)
  • Natalie H.

Deer paper wallpaper, authentic, reasonably priced food. Need I say more? My favorite is the fish tacos and a bottle of Mexican coke. They only accept cash, and get pretty packed during lunch hours.

  • Laura B.

Low key family owned authentic Mexican. No frills here and good news is you won't be paying for it. Great guacamole and salsa. Watch it the verde is hot! Great eats for the low price. 16.00 for 2- not including tip. Alcohol is not served.

  • Bob B.

$5 Mexican sausage burrito. Perfect. Added a side of chips and salsa and got a whole bag. Thanks Sante Fe! This place is a low-key, purple painted spot across from the Louisville Cardinals baseball field. Always nice to find these slices of a neighborhood in my travels.

I've had Mexican food all over the country, and this is among the best. The decor is nothing fancy, but the service was great (it wasn't very crowded for dinner).

Great prices and awesome selection. Food is great. Highly recommend.

Never thought I'd find authentic Mexican tacos in Louisville! Very pleasant surprise. Don't be fooled by the shoddy exterior, they cook some delicious food inside. We had Mexican tacos (pollo and carne) and they were both tasty. Incredibly cheap too! The only reason I won't give this place 5 stars is because the guacamole didn't taste fresh.

  • Pangga L.

Very good Mexican place for a cheap price. It's right infront of a baseball stadium around the university neighborhood. They give you a complimentary huge basket of tortilla chips with red and green salsa right when you sit on your table. The salsas was watery but really good with the crispy tortilla chips. I ordered enchillado with red sauce and my boyfrend got the carne asada dinner platter that had beans, salad and soft tortilla on the side. They give huge portions for a cheap price, mine was $7.95 I think and his was around 10 bucks. The guy that served us was really good!! I love it when servers are nice and our food came really fast. Only bad thing bout the place is they only take cash.

    (4)
  • Dave C.

Man this place is great. It is a little hole in the wall across from the new U of L baseball stadium. their food is authentic Mexican with choices of Mexican style, American style or vegetarian style to suit different tastes. The best part is the portions are huge and the prices are cheep. For about $8.00 you will be stuffed. Just don't be put off by the hot pink exterior.

  • Thao T.

I love the casual atmosphere, the cheap tacos and the free salsa! Though the tacos look small, I'm usually stuffed with just 3 (Try the shrimp taco!). There's a wide selection for you to choose from. The owner and the workers are genuinely nice people. Simple and delicious. If you're used to those chain Mexican restaurants with the fancy margaritas, this might not be for you.

    (4)
  • Matt R.

Great, divey Mexican joint. Super, SUPER cheap. How cheap? Well, I get 6 tacos for less than the price of two at Taco Punk. I guess that isn't saying much, but seriously, they are cheap. And good. You know what else is amazing? The food here has never made me sick. I mean, considering that it is "that kind" of Mexican place, that's a pretty good sign. If you are in the area, I highly recommend stopping by here for some authentic Mexican tacos. You probably won't regret it.

    (4)
  • Scott F.

Positive: The food was authentic and very delicious. Salsa was fresh with big cilantro flavor; and the chorizo tacos on corn shells were great! Negative: No cerveza! Also, one of the waitresses didn't speak English making for a few awkward moments. If you're looking for great Mexican food with a no frills atmosphere (and no alcohol), check this place out.

  • Andrew B.

Some of the best authentic Mexican food in Louisville. This is for people looking for something a little more original than the "Americanized" Mexican food that a lot of restaurants offer.

    (4)
  • Donald D.

Came in for lunch with two other guys. Santa Fe was recommended so we were anxious to give it a try. The food and atmosphere were fine -- nothing special. There are literally dozens of Mexican restaurants in town, many like El Mundo, Guaca Mole, or Ramiro's as good if not better.

  • Meela L.

I went to Mexico last year and I really enjoyed the authentic taco with all the exotic meat in it. I am glad that my husband took me to the restaurant. I love the beef tongue taco, fish taco, and shrimp taco.. So fresh and yummy... They have two kind of tortilla: corn and flour. The meat is juicy and tender. The prices are reasonable too... a taco paradise for taco lovers!

Excellent food at a great price! Highly recommended. Friendly and fast service as well.

Turn your car back on and head down to Chipotle. This place doesn't offer anything great. The food wasn't awful, but it didn't live up to the reviews. The portions are large, I"ll give you that, but who cares if there isn't any flavor? I haven't visited many Mexican restaurants in Louisville yet, but this better not be the best Mexican here.

  • S S.

Went for lunch and had the tacos. A great selection of meats, my favorite was carne de res... Can't remember but it was good and cheap! Warning: the green salsa, available by request is hot, hot, hot, and I grew up on the southern border. My only gripes are that the regular salsa was pretty bland and the chips came out of a bag. Try the tacos, Mexican style. You'll love it! one star deduction for the craptastic chips. Get the tacos!

  • Ashlee C.

The best thing about this whole-in-the-wall (and I say that with affection) is the taco selection. These are authentic, street vendor-style tacos -- small, cheap and delicious. The Mexican BBQ taco topped with fresh cilantro, onions and a drizzle of lime juice was divine. Just be careful of the juice running out of the end. You can easily make a meal of three tacos that will cost less than $5. And the list of meats from which to choose is extensive: pork, chicken, beef, beef tongue (!), chorizo, etc. The list of downsides is pretty short. The restaurant only takes cash. The chips probably come from a grocery store instead of Santa Fe's oven. And my spicy-loving palate could have used more of a kick in the chicken, bean and rice burrito I had during my last visit. But the tacos alone make Santa Fe a great place to get a cheap, delicious meal.

This is definitely some of the best Mexican I've had in Louisville. I had almost written the city off as having some of the best food in every category except for Mexican. Don' get me wrong: I love some tex-mex and we have some good options, but I've had less than great luck with authentic Mexican and this was a welcome change. The atmosphere was interesting, but in my opinion interesting good. They had a little Virgin Mary shrine type deal in the window, a few cheesy Mexican decorations, and otherwise is was super simple. My boyfriend lived in Mexico a few months and said it was pretty on. Ashlee C's suggestion of the tacos was a winner. I had a combo with a taco (I chose the Mexican BBQ), an enchilada (I asked for the green sauce one and they happily obliged), and something else I don't remember what it's called. All amazing. I loooved my taco. Great flavor, authentic corn tortillas. Mm. Mm. The enchilada was very tasty, but SPICY. So keep that in mind. I love spicy and it was right on the edge for me. Great as an accompaniment, but as a standalone dish it would have been problematic for the mouth. TIP!! Super important to not that they take only cash. The owner gave us Choco Tacos on our way out. That goes a long way for me. We were in late, I changed my order after reading the reviews about the tacos, and felt bad for being so difficult and the folks there were super nice, accepting and then gave ME ice cream. This may very well become a 5 star for me.

I finally had my opportunity to drop in here with my Dad on April 14, 2012. It was quite early (before 11) but the family running Santa Fe made us welcome. We both ordered Enchiladas verdes and it was quite good, saucy but not soggy, good balance of spices. Ample portions of rice and beans (refried, not my choice, I'll ask about that next time I'm here). The entire meal with drinks for two was $24 plus tip.

What do you get when you combine the biggest appetite in Louisville with a burrito from Santa Fe? Me, completely in food-coma heaven. As dive eats go in this city, this is one of the greats. Authentic atmosphere is combined with gargantuan portions of all the good stuff...chorizo, Mexican bbq, beef tongue (still a little apprehensive about that one!), and the most important ingredient in my life, cilantro. But never fear, even if you are not a cilantro fan (which does in fact make you crazy, by the way), there are plenty of other delish options you can choose, all of which are sure to induce your own personal food coma afterward. I would eat there every day if I didn't have the craving to drink a margarita with every bite. Since no alcohol is served there, I am forced to look elsewhere when I want to get a little crazy with my meal. Yummy goodness, wrapped in a tortilla. Enough said.

Our vagabonding ensemble stopped in for a quick bite on our way to Indianapolis. This establishment is quite tasty. It's rare to find such an economical and authentic Mexican restaurant in Kentucky. The Mexican style tacos we very filling and seasoned to perfection. I would definitely recommend the carnitas. The homemade salas hit the spot and the quesadillas were excellent. Over all a worthy stop!

  • K S.

Don't let the outside fool you. This place serves great authentic Mexican food. I had the pork stew which was excellent and my friend enjoyed his enchilada verdes. Highly recommend. Being nit picky, would expect a little better chips from this kind of place but the salsa was good.

  • Alec P.

By far the best Mexican food in town. The tacos are incredible. Though I do always go for the Mexican style, so I can't comment on the American versions. The chicken is excellent good and not dry which is the downfall of some other places in town. I suggest the cow tongue at least once, I was apprehensive to try it at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. The burritos are really good as well, not to mention they are huge.

    (5)
  • Pat S.

The decor isnt fancy but the food and service are out of this world. My mexican style burrito con queso with guacamole was the best burrito ive ever had by far.

So I am from a little town on the plains in Colorado, I happen to be very picky of Mexican food as a result. This is definitely the best Mexican food in Louisville and I will go back as often as I can. When thus girl needs Mexican food, Santa Fe it is!

I was always hestitant to go in here. Perhaps I was frightened by the pink & purple building... not sure. I was foolish! I love this place. It is far from fancy... typical "hole in the wall"... so don't expect much in the way of decor. I will rave about the prompt, decent service and great tasting food. The prices are very reasonable. I found myself ordering many items because, based on the price, I assumed the portions would be tiny. I was wrong--good size portions. I filled up on my two tacos and took my burrito home. I plan to go back for many more tacos. In short, you choose a meat, choose a tortilla, and choose a style. It's an inexpensive way to samble many tastes. Cons (in my opinion): As of this writing, they close at 9pm on Fri & Sat night (I wish they were open a little later.) and they do not accept plastic for payment (I hate this because I hardly use cash anymore.). Still... it's a great place. If you're even thinking about trying this place out... just a little bit... just do it.

Everybody I know always raves about this place, and I have been here many times. It just isn't that good, but I will still give it 3 stars because it's better than most Mexican in Louisville (there is good Mexican on Preston Hwy). Anyways, Santa Fe usually has bad service and the atmosphere is lacking. It's a more authentic style of Mexican food, but they get it out to you a little too quick for comfort. That means that everything is precooked and that's just not my thing. The chips and salsa are terrible, but I don't want to rag on this establishment too much. It is a cool building on the exterior, it has developed a loyal clientele and the quesadillas are fine. I have never understood why people talk it up so much, but I do have them in my speed dial. If you live in the Churchill Downs area, it's one of the best quick options. I would recommend you order to-go.

I've been eating here since opening. Best tacos Mexican style. Best fresh quac. If you can handle the heat...Best red sauce around! Makes everything taste better even if eyes and nose are running. Get a Horchata drink, tastes so good & will help put down some fire! My favorite? Huge Chicken burrito, of course, only Mexican style!! My daughter orders hers with white sauce on top which must be queso. Sweet owners also, their cute Son has grown up here in Louisville

My absolute favorite Mexican place in town. Been coming here for almost 7 years. Homemade chorizo, big portions for little prices and a grocery store around back to grab a treat after lunch/dinner. We call it 'Purple House' and I honestly didn't know the real name for probably the first 2 years. Everyone who works here is friendly. Real Cokes (Mexican coke, sugar/no corn syrup, in the tall bottle) and horchata bring in the double bonus. Burritos are huge, quest and salsa are good enough, but the hot green salsa is my favorite. I usually get three Mexican tacos (chicken, chorizo, pork or lengua (beef tongue)) and I'm good to go. Street parking only. Be aware of Churchill race days, UofL baseball games and football. Parking gets scarce.

First time diner. Heard so many good things about this place. Was not disappointed. I had the enchilado with beef. It was HUGE and only $7. My friends both had an enchilado blanco platter with chicken. Both loved it. Great food, prompt friendly service and decent prices. Definitely be back.

Great mexican food at even better prices! The food at this place does not dissapoint. It's near University of Louisville's campus and serves up some of the better mexican food in town. The service is always friendly and they are efficient too. They also have fun mexican sodas, try one.

Santa Fe Grill is the best-known little-known hotspot that I can think of. Despite the fact that pretty much all of my friends know about it and that it has a very devoted, almost cult-like following -- especially among anyone who went to UofL -- it maintains its underground feel. And I hope it continues feeling special to eat at for a long time to come. Santa Fe's burritos are my go-to. I get the American version -- that's what it's called on the menu -- which has lettuce and tomato. The Mexican version has onion and cilantro instead. These burritos are huge -- definitely able to fill you up and perhaps then some. While I can't put my finger on how they're different, they taste better than 90 percent of the other burritos I have eaten. And at $6.90 each -- from what I can tell, the prices have gone up in the last year or so -- they are as easy on your wallet as they are uneasy on your waste line. Santa Fe's guac is also praise-worthy, as is the fact that it carries Mexican Coca-Cola -- made with sugar cane instead of corn syrup -- along with a good selection of other Mexican sodas. And they now can take credit cards, which was the one thing I have been critical of in the past. If you're out by campus and pass a pink building on the corner of Third Street, take some time to go in and get a truly great meal. You'll feel special being on the in with the rest of the population.

Mom & Pop Mexican cafe, nothing fancy but classics are all very good. Jarritos and Mexican Coca-Cola, homemade lemonade are available but no beer. Salsa is not spicy, homemade spicy verde and habanera salsas made upon request and served hot and excellent. Great place for take-out and they do a lot of it here.

I used to eat street tacos as a kid growing up in San Diego, CA. Those were the best tacos I've ever had. Growing up, then moving to Kentucky, the struggle to find something like that was real. Fast forward to college, when my dad finds this place. I ordered 3 tacos that day - carnitas (pork), pastor (saucy pork), carne respicada (steak) - all Mexican style (cilantro and onion). You guys, I don't do this often, but I cried when I first bit into the pastor taco because MY CHILDHOOD! I haven't had a taco this delicious since I was a kid! And the price? it's like $1.50 per taco for corn tortilla. So not only was my precious taco super delicious, but it was also hella cheap!!! If you haven't gone here already, you need to check this place out! Except don't plan on eating too many of the chips and salsa that comes out prior to your food. They're usually kinda stale... But it'll save room in your stomach for more tacos!

Good as ever, so gratifying to be assured with every visit their quality and standards are A-OK. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a side of the most authentic chili relleno since La Posta in La Mesilla. You will not find the Monterey Jack milky goo that is so common in Derby City. Cheers

Yo, this was my spot. Veggie burrito game on point. Chip game on crunch. Salsa game on bazongazong. Plus, this place is too authentic. You know if there's a picture of Jesus per table you're in for a treat and I swear there might be two.

I absolutely love this place! Where else in Louisville can I get great tasting tacos as cheap as $1.90? If you know, please tell me! Every single visit, I order Mexican style corn tacos. I've never had their flour tortillas, so I can't tell you anything about that. I always order the shrimp tacos because they are the best! The tangy shrimp is cooked and flavored perfectly. I used to order chicken and pork, but the meat is dry sometimes. Chorizo is a must! It has enough spice to make my nose run, but as a spicy food noob, I can handle it. Also, each taco has two tortillas, not one. As for the other food, the complimentary chips that are served when you are seated have changed a few times. Sometimes they're super salty, but I don't really care to complain because they're complimentary. They come with salsa roja and salsa verde. I don't like the salsa verde because it's hot. I've had the chicken flautas twice, and they were alright. The rice and beans were decent also. I haven't tried anything from the rest of the menu because I LIVE FOR THESE TACOS. Order the tacos (at least 3), and you will leave happy. About the service, the people are really nice. I've never had anyone who was rude in the slightest sense. Sometimes it is busy, so the waiters can be slow. But I've observed that there are waiters who also work the register and take to go orders and the food runners. So if you see a guy standing around near the kitchen instead of asking you if you're ready to order, don't be offended because he's not your waiter. Other notes, there is street parking and you seat yourself when you walk in.

I love this place. Their food is fast and fresh. The atmosphere sports much Mexican paraphernalia, pictures of the owner's family and the many awards the restaurant has won. It's always super busy for lunch, but dinner time is a little more tame and less crowded. I visit so often that the owners know me. I bring visitors to the city here as an example of a nice family-owned Mexican restaurant. So far, everyone has enjoyed the food as much as I.

I really want to have authentic Mexican food and not a Mexican chain like oh I dunno...El Nopel. I want to see what was out there, in our neck of the woods. I had the fajita mixed (chicken. Steak, shrimp) w/ tomatoes, red/ green peppers. My GF had a enchiladas (1 cheese, 1 steak, 1 chicken) and the little guy had some beef tacos. Overall...amazing! I mean I was expecting good but not great! My fajita tortillas where even brown n crusty like they suppose to be when made fresh... My GF said they where awesome!!! Price was high but that to be expect at most Mexican chains. For real good Mexican food you pay a pretty penny for a great meal.

This is the most authentic Mexican food I've had since I left the San Diego area. I love the tacos Mexicanos with the lime and cilantro, and the green salsa is so spicy and wonderful. The family pictures up on the wall as you come in always make me smile. This really is a hidden gem of a place.

First time here. It looks a little sketch from the outside but once inside the service was super fast. I ordered the quesadilla with chicken, cheese and beans. It was amazing. It was soooo good that after I finished it, I went glutenous girl status and ordered another one. The chips and salsa were also good. Would def go back!

Santa Fe is close to where I work, so I eat there a lot. The food is fantastic each and every time. I recommend the Mexican style tacos with Pastor pork. The only reason I would not give 5 stars is that the service is somewhat apathetic. Not bad, particularly, just meh.

  • Rachel R.

Santa Fe Grill is by far the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the area both in price and in product. I usually get 3 tacos Mexicanos (= with cilantro and lime) and they fill me right up for under $10. With as little as we're spending I figure 20% of $10 is a measly tip considering how good the service is. Ooo the chorizo con huevos tacos are def my fav. *salivating* Please note that lunchtime on weekdays is especially crowded. From cops to construction workers to high brow business men, this place can get packed. Fortunately, they have ample seating. Although, you may have to wait for a table on an extra busy day. Good thing about the restaurant is that there is PLENTY of street parking, no matter how crowded it is. Enjoy!!

Came here for the first time today & only because El Molcajete was closed due to the inclement weather. Not a terrible experience, but I doubt I'll be back when there's much better food/atmosphere just a block away. Everything was just kind of bland. The chips are very clearly cheap store-bought way-too-salty nonsense, the salsa had no heat to it, & my chorizo quesadilla was just very boring. I love good chorizo that's salty & spicy enough to clear out my sinuses but this was as I said before: just bland. Prices are reasonable but the menu doesn't have many options. And the decor looks like Party City threw up all over the place. Honestly, if you gave this place anything higher than 3 stars, please do yourself a favor & go one block over to 4th Street at El Molcajete.

Of all of the places I go in Louisville, Santa Fe is the place I get the best service. Always so friendly and attentive. The Mexican options are authentic. The tamales are good. The tacos are good. The burritos are big enough to put you in a food coma. The chips and salsa are below average. You get enough to eat for days though. Overall, this place is super casual and super awesome.

Do not let the sewer smell and Mexicans outside deter you from going in. You will not be disappointed. Very good Mexican food. I would recommend the Blanca enchiladas. If you order a pop it comes in a 20 oz so no refills though.

We get take-out from here often. Our order is ALWAYS right and hot when we pick it up. So thankful to have stumbled upon this spot in my days at UofL.

Went here due to the high rating on Yelp. Not busy. 3 or 4 customers total. Upon arrival, I was immediately asked for a drink order (non alcoholic only) and given chips and salsa. Round corn tortilla chips, same kind you get in the cheap bags at the grocery. Only good if you don't know how tortilla chips are supposed to taste. Red salsa - OK flavor. Very watery. Green salsa - very tasty with a good, but not overwhelming, amount of heat. The rest? I have no idea. After waiting between 15-20 minutes after the chips were served for someone to come back, I walked to the counter, paid for my soda and left. The food may be great, but that means nothing when you can't even place an order. What I was able to experience indicates a mediocre Mexican restaurant with poor service. I won't be returning. Tip for the restaurant: if you are going to leave someone sitting for 15-20 minutes with nothing but your chips and salsa, don't use cheap, tasteless chips and watered down salsa.

Great Service, really good veggie burrito. The Green Salsa is incredible, perfect heat with flavor. Well done folks!

I am really trying to wrap my head around this place having a 4 star rating. Maybe if the name of the place was Santa Fe Take Out I could understand. As for a RESTAURANT, this places pales in comparison to every restaurant in Louisville. This place ranks 5th when you type in "Mexican" in Yelp... seriously? We, as a group, are putting this ahead of La Rosita, El Molcajete and just behind El Mundo? I am going to go off on a limb and accept the premise that this is some kind of viral joke... Anyway, moving on... they give you the cheap round chips from a bag, the place is tiny, the seating is horrendous, and they generously provide you with bright florescent lighting so you can see just how ordinary everything is inside and on your plate!! :D... This place is the equivalent of cheap Chinese take out for Mexican food. I wouldn't eat here if I lived next to the place, frankly just because El Molcajete is pretty much right beside the place and better in every way possible. Even if it wasn't I would still go to Senor Iguana just a block or so away. Cliff Notes: Go somewhere good (El Molcajete is a block over on 4th St.) - AKA not here.* *Disregard this message unless you are stoned or drunk

The tamales were suspiciously similar to tamales I've purchased at Sam's Wholesale Club. The tortilla chips come out of a bag from Sysco. The salsas were really good & tasted fresh - beware: the salsa verde is hot. The guac was good too.

Loved this place!!!! I got their 3 tacos: shrimp, fish and beef tongue. They are AWESOME! If I could change anything at all to have a better experience at Sante Fe grill that would be ordering all 3 beef tongue tacos, because, goodness, they were so, so good that I wish I had more of that one. Super friendly service. Delicious and fresh tacos. What else could I have asked for!

I have long scoured Louisville for authentic Mexican places. Having grown up (and spoiled) with a plethora of Central and South American restaurants in Southern California, this place is pretty good. It doesn't have your bullshit oven warmed rice and beans plate like all the other CORPO Mexican restaurants (lol, sorry) The food is like 7.8/10. Not madre and padre kind of Mexican food, yet it still has an affordable menu and very good food. If I had to guess, this is more of Northern Mexico food. No ceviche or tamales. Service: Pretty good, nice waitresses **Torta: Definitely 7/10 Sandwich wasn't grilled enough, the cheese wasn't melted, the beef was a little lower on the grade scale, but overall still tasty **Vegetarian tacos/Mexican vege tacos: Great cheap alternative rice, beans, cilatro and salsa ** Burritos (The staple food of my teenager years): Soggy and low grade tortilla, the lettuce didn't have that satisfying crunch to it, no black bean option, meat low grade, and not pressed. (5/10) Overall, close to my work and pretty good food. I am hoping that more character comes to this place with time.

I haven't found a decent taqueria since moving from San Francisco 2 years ago... until my daughter took me here. This place could hold its own against any Mission District taco joint, with the added bonus of not being packed to the ceiling with trustifarians and hipster wannabees. Great quality food, great prices!

Meh...procrastinating college student experience at best. Met a friend after class for a quick bite. There is nothing fancy about Sante Fe grill, but it is VERY affordable. The dishes are not terrible and I met a couple chefs who did not speak any English, so I am assuming they are at least better then familiar with making the dishes. I had my standard chicken enchilada and got a large serving. The food was pretty tasty and covered in cheese. I was really side about the bagged chips they served with salsa, not even close to a fresh tortilla chip. Considering this was slightly out of the way and completely underwhelming I doubt I will be back. Adios!

Santa Fe Grill is passable, but it's hardly in the running for best Mexican in town. In fact, it's the second-best Mexican food on the block. Do yourself a favor and walk the extra 30 yards south to El Molcajete. I thought the carnitas wasn't bad, and the verde sauce is quite good. But the chips and salsa might as well be Tostitos and jarred picante sauce. Fish tacos? Fishy. Let me put it this way. Most of the clientele here is of the desk jockey gringo persuasion. The physical laborers know to go elsewhere. But there are still redeeming qualities. (1) It's still Mexican food after all; (2) cool 1980s horsey pictures on the wall; (3) crummy little bodega in back. I don't want to complain too loudly.

    (3)
  • Jack W.

By far, the best & most authentic Mexican that Louisville has to offer. It is a hole in the wall but I don't go out for Mexican for the ambiance. Only down side to me are the tortilla chips & no credit cards. The chips are really disappointing considering the rest of the food is so genuine.

You could totally go here and order a HUGE burrito for $5.75 and have a great quick and filling meal with one item. But where's the fun in that? What I love about this place is that the tacos and quesadillas are priced individually. Tacos are $2 and pequeño quesadillas (they also have larger ones for $6) are $3. Perfect for my eternal indecision between the two: I can get both! The options continue for tacos and I highly recommend trying the authentic Mexican style one with onion lime and cilantro. Add the barbocoa and there's even more of a wonderful spicy tang to it! Another great aspect of the food here is that they don't lather up the tortillas in butter or grease. I can hold my food with my hands and I don't end up with 50 buttery napkins next to my plate. The free salsa and chips were a little weak. Chips looked like their prior home was inside a Tostitos rounds bag. The red salsa tasted fresh and was pretty good but had no spicy kick to it. The green salsa was interestingly warm temperature-wise and much hotter spice-wise. I guess I'll try mixing them next time?

Some of the best authentic Mexican food in Louisville. This is for people looking for something a little more original than the "Americanized" Mexican food that a lot of restaurants offer.

  • K S.

Don't let the outside fool you. This place serves great authentic Mexican food. I had the pork stew which was excellent and my friend enjoyed his enchilada verdes. Highly recommend. Being nit picky, would expect a little better chips from this kind of place but the salsa was good.

    (4)
  • Nick A.

  • Jasmine A.

  • Molly S.

    (4)
  • Brenda A.

It's actually pretty good. Both gringo and authentic food :) It's packed at lunch time so take your time!

  • Troy W.

If you're even thinking about trying this place out... just a little bit... just do it.

  • Kevin O.

  • Coty Y.

Nice cozy joint with great Mexican food closer to the authentic side and less with the cheese.

Deer paper wallpaper, authentic, reasonably priced food. Need I say more? My favorite is the fish tacos and a bottle of Mexican coke. They only accept cash, and get pretty packed during lunch hours.

    (4)

  • Paige B.

Enjoy!!

Adios!

I love the casual atmosphere, the cheap tacos and the free salsa! Though the tacos look small, I'm usually stuffed with just 3 (Try the shrimp taco!). There's a wide selection for you to choose from. The owner and the workers are genuinely nice people. Simple and delicious. If you're used to those chain Mexican restaurants with the fancy margaritas, this might not be for you.

Some of the best authentic Mexican food in Louisville. This is for people looking for something a little more original than the "Americanized" Mexican food that a lot of restaurants offer.

Don't let the outside fool you. This place serves great authentic Mexican food. I had the pork stew which was excellent and my friend enjoyed his enchilada verdes. Highly recommend. Being nit picky, would expect a little better chips from this kind of place but the salsa was good.

  • Nick A.

  • Jasmine A.

Low key family owned authentic Mexican. No frills here and good news is you won't be paying for it. Great guacamole and salsa. Watch it the verde is hot! Great eats for the low price. 16.00 for 2- not including tip. Alcohol is not served.

  • Kelly N.

I go once a week. Best in Louisville. Like others said, cash only. And they keep your bill at the counter, so just walk up and tell them what you had. Quirky place but the food is tops.

  • Isadore F.

  • Verna U.

Adios!

  • Jack W.

By far, the best & most authentic Mexican that Louisville has to offer. It is a hole in the wall but I don't go out for Mexican for the ambiance. Only down side to me are the tortilla chips & no credit cards. The chips are really disappointing considering the rest of the food is so genuine.

  • Megan F.

I've been eating here since opening. Best tacos Mexican style. Best fresh quac. If you can handle the heat...Best red sauce around! Makes everything taste better even if eyes and nose are running. Get a Horchata drink, tastes so good & will help put down some fire! My favorite? Huge Chicken burrito, of course, only Mexican style!! My daughter orders hers with white sauce on top which must be queso. Sweet owners also, their cute Son has grown up here in Louisville

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
