I've been looking at this restaurant for over a year and for our anniversary my husband and I decided to try it out. It's a lovely space and I was looking forward to good sushi. We pulled some sushi off the conveyor belt, ordered drinks and an appetizer. The "Naughty but Nice" was DELICIOUS and I really enjoyed the duck and camembert spring rolls. Sushi was tasty but nothing better than I've had at other sushi places in town. We ordered dinner and I should have read the other reviews and stuck to the Japaneses. I ordered a seafood gratin which is seafood in cheese over rice. Personal pet peeve- if you're putting shrimp in a dish, take the dang tails off. Nothing is less appetizing than biting into shrimp tail. Combined with the tasteless cheese it was an extremely dissapointing dish. My husbands mixed fry was a little better, though the breading was again pretty flavorless. The best part of his meal was the seaweed salt on the rice on the side. We ordered the dessert sampler, which had cheesecake, chocolate torte and pumpkin pudding, with toffe and ginger ice cream. The ice cream was wonderful, but the rest of the plate was again, flavorless!! All of this was compounded by an unhelpful and under-informed waiter. Nice guy, but unless another waiter was prodding him he wouldn't move toward us. As the rating says, Meh - this was a very expensive dissapointment, and we won't be returning. I'll satisfy my sushi craving at Tokyo Sushi up the street.

The sushi is good, but not the standout. The french food and the atmosphere are much interesting. The conveyer belt is fun, and the karaoke rooms are more fun.

Japanese and French - an odd combination in my mind but it works great for people who don't have the same tastes. I am not a fan of raw fish, but I like cucumber rolls and the like. The sushi on the conveyor is not the only sushi they have - there are many other rolls made to order. We made a reservation with Open Table (though it wasn't necessary at 6pm) and we were seated at a primo booth directly against the conveyor. Staff was accommodating - whenever one of them walked by they would do something like take away a plate, or refill your water glass even if they weren't "your" servers. My husband said his sushi was as good as my cucumber rolls, and the crab cream croquettes (like a crab cake made with panko) were hot and delicious. I also had the filet mignon with white truffle sauce, which was my first introduction to truffles, and now I know what all the fuss is about. The steak was cooked perfectly and very tender. If I had to complain about anything I'd say it was a little less hot because they served it on a cold plate that took the heat out of it. I had the chocolate mousse for dessert and I wanted to lick the dish, it was the best I've ever had. Gorgeous, clean modern atmosphere, very intimate. I am sad that I am only a visitor to Lexington, or I would go to School at least once a month!

Best sushi in Lexington and really friendly helpful staff. Have never been to this restaurant and gotten bad sushi....their other japanese food is excellent as well. Love their dressings which are made in house. I'm a huge fan and tell everyone to go here!

Its definitely not worth the money. There are several places in Lexington that have better, fresher, cheaper sushi. Went there on a Thursday night around 7 and the place had only one other table. This meant that there were only three types of rolls on the conveyor belt. We tried the volcano roll and it would have been good had it not been left sitting out forever. The roll was soggy and not very good at all, $6 for 4 pieces of really crappy sushi is definitely too expensive. Everything else was incredibly mediocre and expensive. Another annoying thing was that in the flight of four sakes we sampled one of them wasn't even sake, it was plum wine. NOT was I was expecting.

School has a new twist on sushi bars, at least for the Lexington area: it is a Kaitensushi bar, meaning much of the sushi is prepared and put on plates that go around on color-coded plates on a conveyor belt for customers to pick off what they like. This concept is definitely a little gimmicky, but these types of sushi restaurants are extremely popular in Japan and Europe. Unfortunately, the reason for this popularity in Japan, I believe is because the sushi tends to be cheaper since it is pre-made, but no such luck at School. A dragon roll will cost you the same amount pulled off the Kaiten as it will if you order it fresh from the menu. As such, I would recommend passing on the seats at the Kaiten unless you're really intrigued by it, and just ordering off the menu, that way you will get the freshest sushi possible. Many of the rolls were very good, but I ordered some sea-weed salad as a side, and I'm pretty sure it was going bad. When I asked the waitress about the bitter aftertaste it had, and whether maybe it was a different style preparation, she had no idea, and had to run back to the kitchen. It turns out that they get the salad prepackaged from somewhere, so that definitely confirmed by suspicions. Our waitress here was a bit over-friendly and relatively clueless about the food, we asked her several questions and she always had to come back with the answer. All in all, I'm not completely won over by my first experience at School, especially given that I've eaten at three other Japanese restaurants in Lexington in the last month, all of which were at least as good as School. I will definitely have to give them another shot later in the year.

This place is wonderful, I went there last night with my wife. It's a real Japanese experience, and is really meant for people that want a authentic Japanese dining experience. Thank you so so so very much for bringing this style of to the midwest.

Delicious and interesting dining experience. I went on the All You Can Eat night which i believed slowed down service, but the sushi was still spot on. I really enjoyed sitting at the bar next to the conveyor right where they are putting the sushi out so i could easily grab anything that looked good. Wish they would have been labeled. Wouldn't have been able to figure out what they were without previous knowledge of what they had. The reason for giving them 4 stars vs 5 is because they couldn't keep up with the demand and not knowing exactly what i was eating, which seemed like a common consensus from what I heard from people around us.

A very unique dining experience. The decor and atmosphere is very modern and creates a very pleasant dining experience. The staff were very well-informed and knowledgeable of the foods and different entrées that they offered. Food was excellent. Highly recommend, hidden dining treasure in Lexington.

We moved to Lexington from the Boston area a little over a year ago. Since then, I've been trying to find a good sushi restaurant to match (or come close to) the level of sushi I had in Boston. Lots of folks told us about School. The Yelp reviews seemed positive also. We tried a few times, but found long lines (which also a good sign, eh?) So I was finally in the area and drove by around 6pm-ish. The place was almost empty (just a few booths occupied). The sushi bar (about 15 seats long) was totally empty so I sat there (I like to sit at the bar). I brought a book with me to read as my wife is out of town. However, it is very dark in the entire restaurant. A little too dark for my tastes. I had a hard time reading. There is a moving conveyor belt contraption that goes in front of the sushi bar. It was almost empty except for a few California rolls. Perhaps they have something at lunch where you grab what you want and then they count the plates later? The wait staff was very attending getting me drinks and bring the menu. Since I hadn't been there before, I spent some time going over the menu. It looked very impressive with many things that I would eat and many things my wife would enjoy (she doesn't like any fish at all). I ordered my normal sushi order when I visit new places (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, mackerel, and a rainbow roll). It gives me something to compare against. The sushi chef didn't make eye contact with me or anybody else. He had a permanent frown attached to his face. As for the sushi itself. The prices are higher than other area sushi bars. I was expecting perhaps a good size portion. However, quite the opposite. The fish was good, but the pieces were very small and thin. There wasn't much rice under the sushi. The rainbow roll was just 4 pieces and didn't have much fish on it.

My husband and I have been spoiled by Genki Sushi in Hawaii. We arrived with an expectation of similar to what we were used to in Hawaii. In comparison this was a disappointment. However, this is more of a gourmet bistro type restaurant. In that b respect it matches the concept. The conveyor options are limited, so we opted for a holiday special that was offered. Didn't feel it was really worth the 2 hour (each way) drive for this place.

Having watched Jiro Loves Sushi on Netflix, I was craving an authentic sushi experience. A friend has a Japanese friend who recommended School to me as the most authentic sushi restaurant in Lexington. So armed with my newfound sushi "expertise" I sought them out. I don't know about that but I was certainly impressed. The staff was on the ball even about knowing about the movie. I explained my hopes and they delivered. The fish was fresh and delicious although I'm not a fan of sea urchin, the rest was great. Plus we had the grilled squid. I was also happy they served Kaliber non-alcoholic beer as I don't drink, although the sake list sure was tempting. The conveyor belt winding through the restaurant was pretty cool. I felt like I was in New York or somewhere.

Delicious! My husband travels to Osaka for work and this was the only place in town that I could find that offered Osaka style street food. And it was a delicious! And the hubby said it was very authentic too. Definitely try the Takoyaki!

I have many Japanese friends and they all say that this is probably one of the best places for Japanese food in town that wont break the bank. the staff is incredible! they really know their customer service, the food is great, I always get the potato croquettes and the Yakizakana (yellowtail) very well done and probably as close as Japanese cooking can get. I have traveled to Japan many times and I can vouch that this is a pretty authentic Japanese restaurant.

First impressions are nice. Very clean and sophisticated with a great atmosphere. The food menu has many traditional/semi-traditional Japanese dishes. I lived in Japan and have visited there and many of the dishes were spot on with a touch of flare. The sushi menu leaves something to be desired, not many choices or anything spectacularly original. The food was mediocre at best. I had the curry beef with tonkatsu (fried pork chop). The pork chop was fried to a crisp, not the good kind of crisp either. I was served basically a strip of breaded leather. It was super tough and dry and hard to chew. The flavor was there and could have been a good meal if not for that. My sushi was incredibly overpriced! $4 for one roll/four pieces of a sushi roll and the pieces were tiny. 5 dollars at any other sushi place and it's double the size and quantity. The nigiri (plain fish on rice) were also very tiny and overpriced. As sushi goes it was fresh. The drinks are incredibly overpriced, the sake and plum wine was extremely expensive when it shouldn't have been that price point. The other 3 people in my party were also unimpressed with similar opinions to mine. I don't think I will return.

Once a month they do an all you can eat sushi conveyor belt which is simply...magnificent. Like, how does sushi get better than that? I've had better sushi before, but the quality is pretty good here. Just note, if you are going for the all you can eat, it's $25, so if you're not going to eat more than 3 rolls it's probably not worth it.

This place is pretty good. I loved the sushi and the authentic Japanese cuisine. I wish we could give 4.5 stars. Sushi in Lexington has declined, but School is a must if you want the best Lexington has to offer.

What I love: The elegant atmosphere is perfect for date night. I'm a sucker for the sushi conveyor belt gimmick. The waitstaff is very professional and efficient. Although I haven't tried the French options on the menu, they look great and helped convinced anti-sushi friend to eat at a sushi restaurant. What I like: The sushi itself is okay, not bad enough to complain about, but not so great that I crave it. The standard rolls and sushi are done competently, but lack the freshness of a great sushi restaurant. The special rolls are better. Verdict: School is good, worth eating at, but not a favorite.

This is the kind of place I really want to like. Great atmosphere, excellent staff, awesome menu, but the food does not live up to the expectations. Unfortunately it fell way short. I ordered tuna, yellow tail, salmon, scallop, and mackerel nigiri; only the tuna smelled and tasted fresh. The rest had an awful fishy taste and slimy texture. I say this as someone who eats nigiri on a regular basis. I had a crunchy roll from the conveyor belt. It was pretty good! The Okonomiyaki is really cool! It's a thick seafood and bread casserole like thing drizzled in Japanese mayo served on a hot-as-fire stone block. Unfortunately it's more of an block of barely cooked onions held together with pancake batter with a few pieces of shrimp. Looks and smells great, tastes awful.

I enjoy Japanese sushi rolls, especially when they drift by on a conveyor belt! So I was happy to try this restaurant. We dined about 6pm on a Friday night and sat at the counter. We were about the only ones in there dining. Environment was comfortable. The wait staff did a great job. We chose the sushi rolls from the conveyor and also ordered a few from the menu because what was in the belt was very limited. Sushi rolls were good. Not the best I've had but still good. My main issue was the price. As others commented, they are very pricey for the quantity. For what we paid we could have gotten a large platter with rolls and sashimi from other sushi bars in the area. So we give them 3 stars for the value.

This was my 1st time at this place. ( how I do not understand ) I love Sushi and this place is not on my short list. Sushi join with French touch, it works. I had the special Red Miso soup and was great if you like Miso. I also had some Sushi rolls. Service was good and very professional. Also at the end so customer or whom ever had picked up my tab. Anyone know this person please thank them for me!!!

Amazing! Our server Michelle was wonderful amd attentive! We loved all the rolls we tried; the Volcano roll, Crunch and Munch roll, Honey roll and Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll. The Tuna roll was really unique and filling, with shoestring potatoe slices wrapped around it. The Miso soup was exceptional. We ended with the churro and fruit compote with ice cream. One of the best dining experiences I've had in a while! We will be back obviously.

Love this place. Drinks - try the Snow Beauty Sake. It is a cold, unfiltered saki that has a very smooth and silky taste. Also try the Absinthe Flip. Absinthe was relegalized in the US about 3 years ago and is delicious in this drink. I love the Beef Carpaccio. I never get sushi anymore. I only get sashimi. The sashimi is fantastic. The Sea Urchin, and Conger eel and my favorites. One order is 3 giant pieces and the presentation is great. If you want conveyor belt sushi go for it. The specials are always a treat. The Berkshire pork dish was awesome. The meat was perfectly cooked and rich wet with natural juices. The serving pace is a little fast but not bad. Most of us Americans are accustomed to eating quickly and moving on but food was meant to be enjoyed. If you want to eat sh#tty food fast then go to McDonalds not a quality place like this.

Not bad. Skip the whole "sushi on the conveyor belt" thing as it's just a gimmick. The menu has some great items and they have good specials. The sushi was fresh and the kamo udon was great! It's a little pricey, though, and although the food is good there are other, livelier places you could visit. I would definitely go back, but I wouldn't necessarily make it my top priority.

If you're nervous about looking inexperienced trying sushi, this is the place to go. Very american staff and they all are friendly and very happy to offer suggestions/advice. Price wise, it's on par with the other local places. You may get slightly less here, but you do not notice. Atmosphere is wonderful. Clean, nice evening lighting, noise level and all make this a perfect date spot.

We went ~7:30pm on Friday, there weren't many customers. There're only ~6 plates of sushi on the belt, and none of them looks fresh. We ordered 2 appretizers, rice bowl and ramen noodle. We waited for ~15 minutes between each appretizer. By the time we got the second appretizer, it's ~35 mins after we placed order. The tori karaage (fried chicken) was pretty good, but the grill squid was nothing special. Don't even mention about the time we waited for our entrée. The rice bowl came ~20 mins after we finished our second appretizer. The ramen noodle took almost ONE & HALF HR after we placed the order and I almost cancelled the order!! It's not even any special ramen noodle, very salty miso soup base, with bean sprouts and spinach which is NOT supposed to be in Japanese ramen. Even though they took 15% off our bill, but we will NOT go back! There are tons of other Japanese restaurants around that area!

Having a love for sushi, and also for out of the ordinary restaurant set up, I was ready to finally go to School, and schooled I was! The menu was a mixture of French and Japanese cuisine that would make even Escoffier scratch his head and reach for the wasabi. However, once arriving I was sucked into the sushi conveyor right away. Each plate is assigned a dollar value (which at times, the colors are slightly ambiguous, smart of the restaurateur, and can leave you paying more than you thought) It tasted great, but when I got the check it reminded me of how OK the sushi was. I've had much better, both at price point and taste. Overall, I would say go here if you have $50-$100 to spend and want to pay for the experience of an authentic sushi joint, otherwise there are plenty of comparable quality better value alternatives in the area.

Called ahead to make sure School could handle a group of ~30 and was told they could. Beer/wine took about :30 minutes to come out each time, didnt have our order taken for ~1 hour, food didnt come out for ~2 hours. Checks took a really long time to sort out as well. Entire meal lasted from 8-11, way too long. Most sushi rolls were only 4 pieces as well and the tuna was very mushy, like paste. I would not recommend School for large groups.

A small group of 4, we enjoyed dinner her the Friday before Valentines day. We did not have reservations but came early and were greeted cheerfully. They had many specials but the allure of the Sushi go round was too much for all of us! All sushi was fresh and delicious. I don't drink anything but water with sushi and our glasses never were empty. We had a variety of homemade desserts and traded bites to enjoy the variety. It is spotless clean with a very knowledgeable staff. Delicious and fun!

School is a restaurant that I have wanted to try for some time primarily because they have conveyor belt sushi, which seems interesting to me, kind of like the Japanese version of tapas. I've seen conveyor belt sushi restaurants in different cities before, but never had the chance to go to one. For those who don't know about conveyor sushi (called kaiten-zushi in Japanese), it is sushi on color coded plates (based on price per plate) that travels around on a conveyor belt and you grab the plates as they pass. When I first walked into School I was pleased with the atmosphere. School has a very open layout, a modern design, and it was dimly lit to set a nice mood. We were warmly greeted by our waitress and she explained how the conveyor system worked since we have never been there before (this is nice for newbies like we were). We decided to order a roll, pick up a couple of plates on the conveyor, and try some sashimi. The two rolls we grabbed off the conveyor were the crunch munch roll and the volcano roll (both were $5 plates). The plates range in price from $2.75 to $ 8 per plate. Both of the rolls they were slightly above average quality; nothing to write home about, but nothing really wrong with them either. My only complaint about the rolls we got, and about some of the sushi on the conveyor, is that each plate only has four pieces of sushi on them, so if you would equate it to a normal 8 piece roll it is slightly pricier than what rolls normally are. The roll we ordered was a chef's special - it was a California Roll topped with steak. This roll definitely made up for the average rolls we had off the conveyor. The steak was tender and just barely cooked and the roll itself was spot on. I would ordered this roll if you find it as a chefs special or check and see if they could make it for you. However my only complaint about this roll, like the complaint above, is that the roll was a little pricey, $15. The sashimi was the star of the night. I tried and would definitely recommend the squid and the conger eel. You get a lot of sashimi for your money and the quality was superb. The conger eel was my favorite of the night - sweet & tender - a must try. School seems like it would be a good place for a date night - great atmosphere, a fun and interactive dinner, but just be prepared to pay a little more for it (pretty much the main reason I rated it three stars).

Was looking forward to trying this place. Walked in and there were 2 tables at 8pm. The conveyer belt is pretty much a gimmick, only 3 types of sushi on it. Also, for 5-6$ you get only 4 pieces of sushi. Overall, decent but I would rather go to Drakes and spend the same amount for double the amount of sushi. Average at best.

This sushi place is way ahead of the times for Lexington. I expect to see this in a much bigger city. Not only is the sushi great, but the interior is sleek and modern. The service is nice and the sushi offerings are adequate for any taste. Must recommend for sushi lovers in Lexington.

As the waitress will tell you (if you get the really good one) it's "School...like school of fish!" The decor is a sort of Japan meets IKEA but it's really kinda pretty and the sushi conveyor is a gorgeous piece of modern machinery that I find oddly appealing. I've been there twice, and neither night had more than 4 or 5 different items go by but I tried several as did my companions. The sushi was good...better than a lot I've had around here. My friend had more traditional sushi (as in not-the-roll) and said it was really tasty. The real difference at School is that they also have a lot of French items. And let me just say, I do not know who is back there in the kitchen, but they can cook the heck out of some French food. Wow. I had the special, a filet mignon with white truffle sauce and it was the best steak I'd had in years. It was $25 and was better than Ruth Chris and many, many other more expensive steaks I'd had. I loved it so much I took a group of friends back the next night. The server we got that night didn't have the personality of our first experience, but the steak was still amazing, they all reported! My friends tell me they have some great sake as well. I tried some of the cocktails and they were some quirky, and fun ones on the list. All in all it seems to be a laid-back and fun place that tried to maintain a European feel without being total jerks about it. And the sushi chefs are super-friendly and helpful. Tip them well!

Nowhere near an ocean but still capable of providing quality sushi and sashimi. Prices were somewhat pricey but overall for 30bucks I was able to get a plate full of both and left pretty full. One of the few places that I have been where there was a sushi conveyor belt tracking back and fourth across the sushi bar. Staff was friendly and the white tuna sashimi was fantastic. Enjoyed the whole experience.

The service was extremely nice as well as very helpful and well educated on their menu options. The sushi was fantastic and being able to choose from the many items that came around on the restaurant's conveyor belt was very fun! The non-sushi items we got were equally as exciting and full of flavor. The atmosphere at School may be the real star of the show. Very modern, very clean lines, and a wonderful dinning setting. We also had an opportunity to see their meeting room and karaoke room. I got a feeling my wife's next birthday party will be held in the karaoke room as it's very nice and doesn't cost anything to reserve. School is quickly becoming one of my favorite Lexington restaurants. I can't give it a high enough rating!
