Love the food here. I think this location is better than the one in Chevy Chase. The restaurant is in a strip mall but the interior is stylishly simply decorated and welcoming. The food is always spot on and the staff is helpful. Love it!

I can't believe I have not reviewed Athenian Grill before now. The setting is a charming, recently renovated house in Chevy Chase. The food is excellent and served in a fast casual setting. The gyros are off the charts. Excellent hummus. Excellent spanakopita. Terrific baklava. Athenian Grill also has a robust catering business. I've been to several events that they have catered and everything I've had has been first-rate. Ilias, the owner, is a charming guy who is passionate about dishing up authentic Greek cuisine to happy Lexingtonians. We are better off for it.

Normally I reserve 5 stars for my absolute favorite places, and Athenian Grill's eat-in restaurant would fit my 4 star range - really good, nothing wrong, but not THE BEST. The parking is a nightmare :( If you factor in their catering, however, this place really earn's it's 5th star. I would recommend their catering for any event, so much variety and so delicious. They are a great spot for lunch but don't forget that they cater too!

The souvlaki was packed full of savory porky flavor and the gyro bread it was served on is some of the best I have had. The bread is moist and chewy, but not tough. It holds up to the meat and juices quite well. The Dolmathakia where grape leaf wrapped heaven! Tender, tart, and salty. They exuded olive oil and lemon. I could have eaten a whole plate of them! I am looking forward to going back and trying the molusaka and gyros!

My coworkers and I come here at least once a week. We can't get enough of this place. we are literally on a first name basis with the staff. I've ordered the chicken which was alright but the classic is where it's at. Hello flavor country, LOL! People come here for the classic meat. It is phenomenal. I don't know what they put in there but it is so freaking good I cannot get sick of it even if I tried. It's not a huge place, so leave your entourage at home. There's also an upstairs section with a couple of tables and an outdoor patio. If feels like a little house, very cozy but casual. There is very little parking. If you come here before the lunch rush you get the place to yourself. Every time I come here I order the lunch special - classic meat, vegetables, rice and it comes with tzatziki sauce and pita bread. Yum!

This was delicious. Can't believe I havent been here before today. I love greek and Mediterranean food. Great place for lunch, and I'm definitely going back for dinner soon and lunch again soon too! Everything looked good and it was fast, big portions, and nice friendly staff.

Very good, and yes the food does look like it does in the pictures. I don't know much about Greek food but I know that this was tasty. I got the classic gyro: very flavorful and a bit more spicy than I expected. It's fairly priced; essentially I payed ~$8 for a sandwich-sized meal, but the quality made it appropriate. The restaurant is in a pretty small building so space is limited.

I have been to Athens, Greece and have eaten authentic Souvlaki and Gyros; this place is the REAL DEAL. Every time I eat here I'm reminded of my trip and the food from Monastraki Square. Extremely clean, and the owners are super friendly and hospitable. It's almost as if you are going to a Greek home and having a meal. You will be well pleased with your experience.

Really, really good food. Really good. Did I mention how good the food was? Make sure you take time to savor it. Also just heard they have are in the Versailles Kroger!

As I look at all the wonderful photos of the food my fellow yelpers have uploaded I can't help but feel I was at a different restaurant. My lunch looked nothing like these photos. You know when you go into a fast food place and there's those great pictures of burgers and then they hand you this grey stepped on looking thing? That's what I got. I ordered the lamb gyro. I thought about the classic beef and lamb gyro but all lamb gave me visions of seared chunks of lamb on a pita with onions and tzatziki sauce. Nope. Grey pre cut pre portioned food service gyro meat. I don't have a problem with that per se, if maybe they would of seared it off, given it any kind of color other than grey. I didn't see them prepare it so I don't know if it came out of a micro wave or if it lives in a steam table. I threw most of it away. I wouldn't feed that to my dogs. Not even the one I don't like.

How did I not know about this place? It's so cute and tucked away from town, but right in the middle of everything at the same time. I loved the atmosphere and all the natural light. The staff was so polite and willing to help with the menu. Parking was a little crazy and it can get covert crowded around lunch, but so worth it. They have a great gluten free selection. I ordered the Greek stew over potatoes. It came with a wonderful Greek salad! The stew was hearty and just simply amazing. It was very filling! I thought what I ordered was a little on the pricey side but after eating it, it was worth every penny! I will be going back!

We have eaten at the food truck many times at different event around town and it has always been great. We were so happy to know that they now have a brick and mortar home. We stopped in for a quick dinner and weren't disappointed. Hummus is divine! Gyros huge and super pleasing. We left stuffed. Have a Mythos Greek beer and complete your meal. Love these locals and wish them all the best!

If you want affordable authentic Greek food then look no further! I caught them set up in front of Pedal the Planet on Richmond Road for lunch. Ordered a lamb gyro, a chicken gyro and some hummus and pita chips on the side. The gyros are huge and so reasonably priced. I couldnt finish and saved the rest for dinner. The meats are so tender and moist and perfect. Everything about our lunch was perfect, not to mention how friendly they are to have your business. You dont see that in chain places and fast food joints!! Follow them on Facebook and check out where they will be set up next, you will not be disappointed!

Our favorite casual weeknight dinner spot! The Athenian lamb gyro is perfection and the lemon potatoes are delicious. Other favorites are the lamb burger and stuffed grape leaves. It can get crowded, so avoid peak hours.

  • Amanda F.

Overall very good! I love the variety of traditional Greek foods they offer. I ordered the Athenian Lamb Gyro which was very delicious. The meat was really tender & flavorful but was sliced a little too thin for my liking. The restaurant could use a bit more parking spaces. When I pulled up they only had 2 parking spots which were taken by other customers and all the other spots were reserved for the bank next door. Since I went for dinner it wasn't that big of a deal but it made me a little uneasy not knowing if my car was going to get towed while I was inside.

My husband and I went here with a friend one of the last times we were in Lexington, and I'd love to visit again. We both enjoyed our gyros. It's a little tight as far as space inside but luckily, we weren't there on a busy day.

  • Brianna M.

classic hummus and pita! So delicious, I always enjoy authentic Greek food! We also got gyros, very good as well. Very cute restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Will go there again!

  • Katie L.

Good menu variety. My biggest gripe with this restaurant is the amount of oil they use. My veggie with hummus pita had olive oil dripping off of it and my potatoes also were drowned in oil. Great flavors but please calm down on the olive oil!

I had a great lunch here today before the UK v Miss State Baseball game. Very impressed with the quality and taste of my food. I had a Gyros and a Greek salad. Lamb meat was great, cucumber sauce was tasty. Greek Salad had fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and a nice dressing. The other Greek items on the menu looked great, I'll have to try on my next visit. The restaurant has character, small but well kept. Friendly staff - overall great value. Was a nice day, they have a few tables outside if you'd like to enjoy the fresh air.

Everyone in my group and the lady at the register at Athenian Grill encouraged me to get the classic gyro that has lamb and beef, but I rebelled and went with the chicken. Well the chicken was super tasty, and I don't regret my choice. I will definitely eat here again. It was a good-sized gyro for $7 and was the perfect quantity for lunch. We got our food to go and that's probably a good thing because it's a very small restaurant. The parking was also a bit of a mess, very small lot where we just happened to get a spot. Love the pita bread used in my gyro, it was very soft and had a nice flavor. The chicken had a good flavor to it though some of it was on the dry side. I hate getting gyros at places where they just slather on mounds of tzatziki, but they didn't do that here; it was a very modest amount. They probably could've added a bit more tzatziki to balance the dryness of some of the chicken. One guy in my group got the lamb and beef that comes on the classic gyro on top of a salad. I may try that next time, it looked good. It will be hard to get something other than a gyro though, because that pita bread is just so good!

Perfect. The lamb gyro and moussaka are our favorites and the baklava has an addictive quality.

  • Jess F.

How have I never written a review!? I love it! The classic gyro is amazing. The meat is very seasoned and flavorful and the pita bread is so fluffy and SO good! Everything I've had is great. I really like the lasagna looking dish. The prices seem a little steep, but I believe they use mostly local ingredients. Also the staff is super nice and friendly. Athenian Grill makes it into my top 5 restaurants in Lexington.

  • Chrissy K.

This seems like a good place to get a fairly cheap, quick, and filling lunch. I'm generally not a fan of "gamey" meats like lamb so I ended up with a chicken gyro and found it pretty yummy. The pita was heavenly soft and soaked with delicious gyro juices (carbs soaked in flavor = the best kind of carbs), the tzatziki sauce perfectly complimented the gyro's flavor profile. Although the chicken was a little dry, overall the meal was filling & satisfying. I also tried a little bit of my friend's lamb gyro and found the flavor of the lamb to be quite nice and mild, so I think if I were to return, that's definitely what I would try! Ordering is quick and simple. You order & pay at the register and then hang around a bit while they prep your food. There is not a lot of seating (or parking)--there were a few tables inside on the first & second floors and outside on the patio.

If you like Greek food, you will love Athenians! If you have never tried Greek food then do not go any where else, go to Athenians and you will go back! While your there, say hi to my buddy Ilias Papas!

Small, quaint restaurant serving authentic Greek food! Went there tonight for an after celebration dinner. I got the chicken gyro with extra feta & tzatziki sauce... Wow! Absolutely delicious! All tasted very fresh & more than enough for a meal - all for $7! I did get a side salad because i never dreamed one gyro would be enough but it was! My friends got the spinach pie which i cant begin to spell but it looked amazing & they loved it. We got baklava to go.... Perfection! So many layers. So sweet & divine! I fully recommend this place!

My absolute favorite restaurant in Lexington. Converted my husband to trying AND loving Greek food and that's saying something. Authentic and delicious! The gyro, pastistsio, and baklava are our go-to favorites. And our 3 kids love it! They even have a food truck out in the warmer months.

  • Carl M.

I had lunch here on a Saturday. the gyros with lamb were very good. The bread was fresh and the meat was seasoned appropriately. In addition the stuffed grapes leaves were good....a little bland but certainly the best I have had in Lexington. atmosphere is very laid back. It is great place for a moderately priced meal! I will be back.

Cute little place with very good Greek food. Had the spanakopita (spinach pie) with Greek salad. I was given a piece of baklava gratis. Don't you love being lunch-happy? Prices are reasonable. Charming owner, Ilias Pappas. Good food, good prices -- what else can you ask for?

  • Emily B.

This is a small, modest restaurant, but it is very comfortable and their food is good. Everything tastes really fresh and is well-seasoned. My husband has declared their traditional gyro the best he's ever tasted and although I usually don't go for the traditional gyro, I did taste his and had to agree. I had the spanakopita and salad which were both tasty as well. The main reason I didn't give them 5 stars is that you do get less food for your money than you do at their local competition. For example, a gyro is $7 and does not come with a side (at Saharra, you get meat, rice, hummus, pita, and salad for that price during lunch). Overall though, I do really like their food and would be happy to return.

  • Sarah J.

The gyros here are absolutely perfect! If I'm ever downtown I always have to come here. The baklava is so worthy of the twenty minute drive it is from my house to there. Love love love it!

  • J W.

I really don't need to go in depth for a review of Athenian grill, it's just flat out fantastic. I had the classic gyro, perfect combination of flavorful beef, lamb and veggies, fresh warm pita bread and tzatziki sauce I could eat them everyday. The dolmathakia were outstanding as well, the right mix of rice spices and lemon in the grape leaves. The staff is wonderful, nice, attentive and quick to recommend things. The only downside to this place would probably be the parking I guess since most spaces seem to be reserved for other businesses, but don't let that stop you, go, try their outstanding food so hopefully they can open more locations.

The best Greek food I have had! Love the yee-roos. Everytime I go, it's very consistent so that is a plus. One of my favorite go-tos for a quick lunch or dinner

  • Justin M.

Who is this Rick M kid? Pipe down. This is the best fast Greek food I've ever had. The only problem with the pictures not being representative of the food is that you can't lick your monitor and taste the mousaka. This is seriously delicious. Don't come here and not order the mousaka. The gyros are amazing. After my buddy and I got a lamb/veggie gyro and the mousaka, we reordered a lamb burger. We are waiting for it right now. Patiently and excitedly.

This is my favorite place to eat. The food is always fresh and good. I've had the special several times and it has always been good. The food is so good I have a hard time of ordering just one dish, I often order two and end up in a food coma for the day. I've been to many Greek restaurants when I lived in the DC area, and this is as good if not better than many of them. Price is also great.

  • Megan M.

I think these guys are really good but I haven't gone out of my way to dine here bc of the small space and lack of parking. The food is good and specific - they are great at the items they offer.

I have known about Athenian Grill since their start as a food truck. Ever one of the most popular trucks in Lexington now in a brick & mortar location the great only gets better. A wider menu, even better quality and super service. I enjoyed the Cypriot Meatballs with sides of Basmati rice & grilled veggies. Delightful! I'm looking forward to trying everything! I WILL return, and next time? I'm bringing friends...

This place is so good! We were only in town for a week and we made sure to come more than once. The classic gyro is the best I've had with tender meat, delicious pita and amazing tzatziki. I also tried the hummus pita which is a great healthier option. Also if you like baklava, you really ought to try this one! As an avid baker I was super impressed. Definitely a new staple for the Chevy Chase area!

Has been good once before but this time everything was too salty. I tried a gyro from Athenian a while back from the "truck" and I enjoyed it. Tonight I stopped in to the restaurant for the first time and picked up 2 orders of the meatball dish over rice with a side of lemon potatoes to take home and enjoy with my wife. The meatballs were recommended by a regular. The flavors and textures were rich and wonderful but the saltiness overwhelmed everything in all components to both of us. The rice itself tasted a tad too salty the potatoes and the meatball sauce were simply too salty to thoroughly enjoy. The meatballs themselves may have had an agreeable amount of salt in themselves but in a sea of oversalted components it was hard to tell. If I visit again I will likely take a cautious approach and ask for some tastes.

The food here is fantastic! This is one of the few places in lexington that offer quality food at a reasonable price. Try the classic hero and some hummus. Trust me, you will be back. The only reason that I am knocking off a star is because the place is very small and sort of hard to find. Plus, the location looks like it's in a shady part of town. I love how things here are actually cooked and not just brought in frozen and heated up. You can see the chef making your food after you order it. They are also very quick here which is good if you're on a lunch break. The staff is friendly and will answer any questions you have. Give it a try and you will enjoy yourself.

Delicious food, amazing service, adorable spot. Wish I knew where the meat came from (local/farm/etc), but still great!

Athenian Grill started as a food truck serving good, hot street food. The new restaurant is a sunny, cute place tucked behind the Chevy Chase laundromat. Parking is plentiful after 5pm or so when you can park in the UBS spaces. Lunch parking can be a challenge. The food is good. This is a neighborhood restaurant for us, and we are glad to find a new place close to the house. GYROS: very good though chopped tomatoes would be easier to eat than slices BEER: at $2.75 for a can of West 6th, prices are good. HUMMUS: At $5.50 for heated pita bread and a cup or so of hummus, we will skip in the future. The hummus was standard but nothing remarkable. There are some tables downstairs and more tables upstairs. The upstairs room can be reserved for meetings.

The environment is great and the staff is very friendly. We enjoyed the rice and hummus, but our gyros left something to be desired. The lamb just didn't have much flavor. Still, we enjoyed it enough that we'll go back again and try something different for our entrée. Good restaurant!

Overly price mini baklava. Ask for TAP WATER or pay $1.25 for a bottle of water.

Highly recommend. Freshly made, very authentic Greek food. Delicious. Reasonably priced but quality. Take out rocks, though they renovated very well for eat in.

  • Sarah W.

Tried the Greek stew and the pastitsio. Greek stew had a lot of flavor. Portion size was small for the price $9.50. Beef was tender and looked lonely in need of vegetable companionship. The pastitsio was horrible dried out pasta noodles almost broke my teeth, very little meat but somewhere in the center of the small serving was a flavorful soft morsel. Again highly overpriced at $9.25. There is definitely room for improvement. Authentic homemade greek food, but overpriced. Only 3 small round tables for indoor seating.

Best Greek food in Lexington. The classic gyro is delicious and the hummus is so creamy. If I could, I would eat here every day. Not only that, the the wait for food is never very long and every employee is always so friendly. Thank you, Athenian for giving us a taste of Greek cuisine right here in Kentucky!

The Athenian Grill is fantastic. The food is fresh, tasty and affordable. The owner was born in Greece and uses many recipes from his mother's and aunt's kitchen to bring authentic Greek food to Lexington. My favorite is the lamb gyro but I usually try to be healthy by ordering the Greek salad with some red pepper hummus (amazing). Ilias makes it special to order, full of fresh veggies and spices, grilled chicken and a little drizzle of wonderful, fresh olive oil. Athenian Grill is my go-to vendor for a guilty late-night snack or a healthy lunch or dinner. Yum!

I have only been to the new brick and mortar shop. I love the food which is served in ample portions and wonderfully delicious. My personal favorite it the fragrant aromas wafting up from the serving table to tempt me for something other than what i came for. I want more seating in the building itself.

The chicken gyro is great! We also loved the stuffed grape leaves. Not a place I would take my family out to eat, but certainly a favorite for take out!

  • Jeff R.

Best place to eat in Chevy Chase. They have taken the food truck food and raised the bar. Most of the food - except maybe the pita - is made in house and very taste. We had spinach pies and lamb gyros. I was only sorry I was too early for the lamb special.

Good food that is fresh and flavorful. My only complaint is I wish their olives were pitted; use caution!

  • Pam C.

My boyfriend has been to Athenian Grill prior to my visit and absolutely loved their food. I found their food to be very fresh and didn't make me feel bad after I ate it -- which is always a plus. Typically, I'm indifferent to gyros but their's was very flavorful. I especially loved their tzatziki sauce. I'm not sure if they offer lemonade frequently but try it OMG... As far as price, we dropped around $30 for two gyros, two lemonades, roasted red hummus, and baklava. So depending on what you get it can get pricey but you get what you pay for.

I RECOMMEND! After a big win, our soccer team headed to The Athenian Grill for dinner and received nothing but warm and personable service from the restaurant owners. They were accommodating to our large group and I heard nothing but comments of praise from the entire team about the quality of the food. I personally had the chicken gyro and it was FANTASTIC! The newly opened restaurant is the perfect place to stop in and get a quick and delicious authentic greek lunch or dinner. Definitely worth checking out or trying for catering services! Support a local business and go!

This food truck is, well, kind of perfect. One of the tricks of a good food truck is to balance quality/flavor, timeliness, and customer service. Food from a truck can be really good and you can forgive quick and curt service--as long as it isn't really mean. I mean, after all, it is a food truck and the rules are slightly different than a POBaM (plain old brick & mortar). Everyone involved sort of gets that it's a bit rough and tumble as long as the food is spot on. This is the beauty of Athenian. A great mix of friendly service, menu items and choice. Three things matter to me. The bread must be chewy but soft and a hint of salt in the dough. The meat must be moist, shaved but not see-through and spiced well. The tzatziki must be creamy, a bit rich but mellowed with cucumber, and with a nice balance between garlic, lemon and dill and/or mint. The house made bread--and oh my-- is the perfect combination of soft, chewy, hint of salt, and perfectly finished on the grill. I knew I was in good hands, too, when a thin layer of olive oil was used to create a barrier between the bread and whatever fillings I chose. I always take a leap and go for the lamb. If a Greek food truck can't do lamb I won't trust the chicken, either. And Athenian does it well. Add olives, garnish--meh, why bother with tomato this time of year--and a perfect dollop of full fat (yes, FULL FAT) tzatziki and we are golden. The only problem with Athenian? That it isn't a full menu, at the table with a bottle of red and a swarm of friends, POBaM. But I will take what I can get.

Athenian Grill is something worth checking out. I went for the spinach pie but ended up sticking around for the beef gyro. You will be charmed by the greek owner, who makes all his stuff from fresh ingredients. If you decide to order a gyro, it is made right in front of you with this wonderful cream sauce added on. Another must try is the spicy (red pepper?) hummus. And on my list for the future... the meatballs. Which are constantly raved about. This is a definite gem of a place. One more treasure for Lexington diners.
