We stopped here because we heard good things about their home cooking. I had the daily special, salmon cakes, there were 2 of them and they were so dry it was like eating sawdust. Almost everything else was either way too sweet or smothered in some kind of cheese sauce. I will never go back there again. It was a bunch of seperate rooms in an old house and most of them seemed disjointed. I think we ate on a add on room or the closed in back porch.

3 stars?? I have no earthly clue why this isn't a 5 star! I consider myself to be a pretty big foodie and I know there is a time when you're eating greasy spoon and a time when you can eat elaborate meals and taste the differences. This place is outstanding for what it is...a down home country favorite type menu, southern hospitality in a comfy, quaint setting. The meal was so dang amazing! Meatloaf was perfectly seasoned, tender and moist. Sweet potato casserole was one of the best I've ever had. The cake...the cake was just a large piece of moist heaven. This is a lot but this was one of the best meals I've had since being in Kentucky. I loved the environment and on a personal note, it made me think I was at my memaws house again...Great service and amazing food, doesn't get any better.

This place is it for homemade goodness. Appetizer of fried chicken wings...these aren't your bw3 wings. These are grandma's fried chicken in small sizes..just amazing. Got the chicken fried chicken for entre. Oh man. It was on point. Enjoyed the homey feel as well.

We decided to give this place a try while visiting Elizabethtown for a soccer tournament. What a find! The restaurant setting was warm and inviting, and the service quick and friendly. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! I ordered the Fried Green Tomato BLT with a side of Baked Potato Salad. My husband had the Fish n Chips on a stick, along with a bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup. For dessert, we shared a piece of the 7 Layer Chocolate Cake, which was amazing, sinful and incredibly moist. My only complaint is that the kid's menu was a little limited. Highly recommend! Will definitely eat here again the next time we're in town.

As usual, we were looking for a non-chain place with good food & we found it! Place actually looks & feels like a home. Laid out with different rooms of seating. Clean, and nicely decorated. Simple menu & daily specials. My vegetarian got the appetizer combo - big enough for a meal. I sampled some too - very fresh & tasty! I got the new Amish bbq pork sandwich topped with creamy coleslaw with broccoli & hashbrown casseroles. Southern cookin at its finest! And not that greasy, salty stuff either! There was breading & frying but they didnt oversalt & there wasnt grease swimming on my plate! We were so full we couldn't do dessert but wow they sounded delicious! If we ever come back this way, we'll definitely be back!

My friend from work recommended this place. I used to work at a chain similar to this style food and Back Home Restaurant is a million times better. The food is phenomenal. Feels like you're just over for dinner at a family friend's place bc the staff is so friendly and you're eating in an old historic home. You can get things on the menu that aren't easy to come by at most restaurants. I highly recommend Back home Restaurant.

The food was very good, I had fried green tomatoes and chicken wings as an appetizer and the chicken fried chicken with the mashed potatoes and sweet potato casserole. The tables were kind of cramped and while I am a big guy it seemed to be a bit to small of a seating area. Overall worth the patronage.

Quaint, home cookin' and best part it isn't a chain! Setting is cozy. Service is friendly and prompt. Food is what you'd expect of a home cookin' diner. Lots of comfort foods, including fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, country ham and country fried steak!

OMG Yummm!!! So, this was our first time here and we cleaned our plates. Even our son ate all his food. Homestyle cooking done right and very delicious without being too "heavy" on the stomach. Proves that you don't need food dripping in oil and fats to maintain flavor. Come and get it...

While on our road trip we stopped here for some food. Our main objective: a down home diner. Perfect place for this. It felt as if we were invited over for dinner. The building feels like a home. It also has a Cracker Barrel feel to it. Intimate seating and lighting and interesting signage all through the building. Good conversation pieces. The service was very good and fast. Our server was very welcoming. We ordered the meatloaf with the broccoli casserole and mash potatoes with brown gravy. The meatloaf was great! The casserole was nice and cheesy and the mash potatoes were a perfect texture. You could even taste the meat in the gravy. We also got the country fried steak with baby carrots and hashbrown casserole. Each items was better than expected. The steak had great crispy edges and the creamy gravy had a really good flavor. The baby carrots were tender and sweet. Way better than any chain restaurant. The hashbrown casserole was so good, I wish I had extra for the next day! Overall an unexpectedly pleasant experience and I would definitely recommend this place. Love from Ohio!

My daughter and I enjoyed a lovely Easter lunch here. We had no plans and saw that it was open and we were not disappointed. As we walked up the bricked path, you could smell the fragrance of old English Boxwood that was just starting to bloom. It remind me of my home in Virginia. I hope they never have to be cut. Inside it is divided into several seating areas that are very comfortable. I ordered ham with cranberry sauce and corn pudding. My daughter ordered chicken salad with sugared walnuts over a bed of fresh spring greens and baked potato salad. We were tempted to get dessert but purchased a bourbon ball from the candy store out from. I will bring my grand kids back for a meal one day. They like to try new things as well.

AWESOME! Food was great, service was super fast. Very quaint! Highly recommend! The open face roast beef was delicious. We also had the chicken salad, chicken salad croissant, and a burger! They were all great! The portion sizes are appropriate for the prices!

Good old fashion cooking in a really nice home. I've eaten here for several years and never left disappointed.

We have lived here three years and this place has improved a lot. We are comfortable taking out of town guests as the menu has enough variety for everyone. This is fairly typical "Kentucky" fare and I've seen the following things ordered- Chicken salad croissant Barbeque sandwich Grilled cheese Fried green tomatoes Pork tenderloin All were eaten and given "ok to good" reviews. The food is not super high quality, and things like club crackers and white bread abound. But, it's a nice local place worth supporting when you can. Good for meeting, events (baby shower/book group etc) and taking kids. Boutique shop upstairs and country music playing.

The food here is great. It's always nice to find a place with a home cooking feel. The only downside to this place is the parking. If there is a limited amount of space in the parking lot. The restaurant itself has plenty of tables...

My wife and I have frequented back home many times and it always lives up to our expectations. They have a little shop with antiques but that is not really very interesting. The food is the real treasure here. If you are looking for down home food than this is easily the best place in Hardin county to eat. They have Excellent casserole dishes and the hash brown and corn pudding casseroles are particularly good. They have a very good country fried steak and I like eating the BLFfT sandwich. That is bacon lettuce and fried green tomatoes sandwich. The place isn't very expensive and is really good for southern down home country food.

Four stars because select foods are out of this world. Some other reviews mention certain foods being plain or mediocre, and I would agree. The burgers are great with nice additions to make them unique...fried green tomatoes, eg. The French fries are incredible. Cole slaw, fried banana peppers, fried pickles, chicken and dumplins. Just stay away from the fish(definitely breaded then frozen), and anything that is commonly not hand-made. Great service and comfortable atmosphere make this a solid family-owned place to get a nice meal.

Cute, country, grandma's house. Literally over the creek from the parking lot into the front door. Most of the food was pre processed from a food service vendor. No good vegetarian options. If you're used to country food, things with pre prepared flavor you'll probably enjoy this locally owned Cracker Barrel type place. Very friendly staff, clean, country style. The ladies room had a bathtub in it, didn't check to see if the water ran in it. Atmosphere was expected. Would have been willing to pay more for fresh ingredient home cooked options.

So sorry to write this review, I hope it helps the management improve. We felt deceived by the name, the reviews, the atmosphere, and the wonderful smells. We were looking for some good home cooking. Also, let me say upfront that we are food snobs! This food was mediocre, and the portions were average. We ordered open faced roast beef and meatloaf meals. The mashed potatoes were not homemade, they were instant, which totally ruined the idea of home cooking. The roast beef was better, but there wasn't very much of it. The meatloaf, recommended by waitress, was average. The green beans were plain. The sides of broccoli casserole and sweet potato casserole were good! The bonus was a hot fresh yeast roll with the meatloaf! The atmosphere was good, the wait staff was very friendly and helpful! Food was super fast! So, if you are looking for real home cooking, this would be a miss.

Stopped in here on the way to Louisville for lunch. The fried pork chops with mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole were great. Everyone was friendly and if I find myself here again I'll probably go back.

Beautiful on the outside; keep driving 'cause this place serves child-size portions for adults. The only edible thing were the French Fries and you could count how many you got, perhaps eight? If you want to buy antiques, the tables, service and food are excellent finds ;)

We ended up here largely because we couldn't find much else on a Sunday afternoon in "E-town". They advertise that "your taste buds will take you back to memories of simpler times," and that's pretty much what you get here - simple food. It's surely a nice place for the neighborhood, a locally-owned business with mostly regulars that come here for their country ham or meatloaf or chicken tenders. This here is Middle America at its most genuine. The whole restaurant is draped in red, white and blue kitsch (all of which can be bought). Stray cats in the yard. Nary a whole-grain to be found. I had the "open-face" roast beef, which was fine. When I paid the check, I was wished a "blessed day." A little extra sugar to go with Mom and the apple dumpling.

They've "updated" several of their standby recipes...to the degree that I'm not planning on continuing my regular visits. The potatos wrapped fish is no longer good. Sandwiches are not good. Even the veggie plate has come up thumbs down regularly over the last few months. Cold and ill-prepared. The hot brown is even more blah. Everything seem to be missing seasoning. Totally depressing.

Have only been there once but the quaint disposition of the place was nice. Food was nice. Nothing that screamed..."the best kept secret in town" We had a Restaurant.com certificate. We were told they discontinued taking them so I don't think you can buy them for her anymore. Price was still fair even without the certificate. I'd probably try again but not somewhere I crave...

Don't know if there is a different cook or different owner or cut backs, but this is definitely NOT the same old place. The roast beef sandwich was instant mashed potatoes on 2 small pieces of bread with barely any meat. It was an absolute joke. The sweet potato casserole was lukewarm with NO exceptional flavor soggy topping. The hot brown turkey was too thick with the hot brown also not being worth the price. It used to come with a salad or 2 sides dishes, but now it comes with nothing, so we purchased hash brown casserole; however, this side too was luckwarm with no flavor. The sides almost taste like leftovers. The combo appetizer was also nothing to write home about. I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anybody NOW. The sad thing is we have ate here multiple times before in years past with NO problems, so I don't know what has happened, but NOT worth a visit, especially if u are from out of town. Oh, one other note...the service was horrible and could NOT keep up. After speaking with the owner? as I was paying, I told her my issues. She said noting is instant. I beg to differ on that one. She said because of all the catering going on that's probably why my food was only lukewarm, which is unacceptable. Finally, when I said there was barely any food on my roast beef sandwich, she stated I could ALWAYS ask for more. I SHOULDNT HAVE TO!

Food was served promptly, hot, Nicely season, portion was just the correct amount, you must try the fried bread pudding dessert, out of this world.

Great food, the chicken salad is delicious. I definitely support this place over chain restaurants, but they could use some customer oriented thinking. I think the service is sometimes a bit spacey and occasionally they are out of menu items...a little bit annoying, but it is a small family restaurant. Wish they did not serve chips w/ sandwiches and then charge you a $1 to substitute fries. Also they have a gift shop with homemade candy--also delicious stuff.

I work near Back Home, and thought I would give it a try. Portions were very small for a grown man. More like kids size. I too had to hunt around for my server and cashier. Wouldn't go back for free.

It is what it advertises itself to be...simple food, easy prices. Not sure how much the guy who said the portions are to small weighs, but I'm a healthy 190 and I've never left here feeling hungry. 20% military discount on top of already low prices makes for a nice meal out.
