One of the best brisket sandwich I had in a long time. The beans had no pork that's a plus .

Yum yum! Went to this place twice already and have not been disappointed!!!! I've gotten the ribs, brisket, and the too die for burnt ends!!!! They know how to do bbq!!! And quick friendly service at that! A bonus plus to this place is that you can replace one of your sides for a drink! That's pretty cool! Speaking of sides....the baked beans are wonderful obviously they make it themselves like all their other side dishes and the lady recommended the potato salad good as well!!! And on a side note they have weekly specials of different bbq which makes me want to stop by every week just to see what they've concocted next for me to devour!!!

As a Californian, it was refreshing to see a business that glorified God, served amazing food, and had great service! If I come back to Wichita, I will defiantly come back here!

Had the pulled pork, brisket with sides of coleslaw and potato salad along with a drink. The brisket was tender but almost flavorless, I had to add sauce to make it taste like anything. Now the pulled pork tasted marvelous on its own, didn't need any sauce. I felt like I paid too much for the small amount of food I got. I also wasn't a huge fan of the Christian gospel music that was being played overhead, the owner needs to keep his religion at home. Overall the place was just average. I'm now more convinced than ever that really good barbeque at a good price just can't happen in Kansas.

Absolutely the best BBQ in Wichita!!!! My family and I tried this on a whim and will be frequent visitors from here on. Great friendly ownership and nice atmosphere. I would put this BBQ up against any Kansas City joint and have faith the flying pigs will prevail!

Best bbq in the country large portions too. This place was recommended by my old buddy Michael Talbot. Won't have bbq any place else. Thanks Brian.

This was really good barbecue! Definitely the best I've had in Wichita (and I have tried the 2 brand names that have many locations in town and one claims to be the best around, don't believe the hype their food is always cold and tasteless!) This brisket was sliced thick, yet tender, and had a great smoked flavor; there was no need to use barbecue sauce (in my mind, no need for sauce, is the highest compliment for flavor of BBQ). My wife had the turkey and said that it was really good too. The only shortfall is the lack of choice on sides, there are no mashed potatoes and gravy or fries. However their baked beans were great, very unique and homemade; they were sweet and spicy and made with at least 3 types of different beans. The potato salad was really good too. The restaurant was clean and very nice. In addition to normal restaurant decor, you couldn't help noticing the massive Christmas tree as you walk in the door! As we ate the owner continued to walk around the restaurant and talk to the customers, he engaged in real conversation, not just the obligatory 1/2 a second walk by where the manager yells "isn't the food great" as your mouth is full of food and doesn't wait for an answer. Be sure to go early, they close at 7 during the week, 8 on Fri and Sat, and are closed Sun and Mon. The restaurant has a family atmosphere, there is a monitor that displays photos of the owner and his family and the hallway leading to the bathrooms also has pictures. I would suggest that they add pictures that prominently feature their employees and their families as well. Be sure to go by and spend your money with a local, family owned business, that obviously cares about it's employees and customers!

Good BBQ, comparable to Kansas City quality. We ordered the ribs and sausage (with and without jalapeños), beans, and corn. The ribs I will say aren't the best but still ok. The sausage however were excellent along with the beans. Will be coming back.

I reside in Northeastern Wichita. It's a distance to get here but absolutely worth it. Their weekly special changes constantly but is consistently a home run. I've sampled all of their usual menu and love everything I've had. My husband isn't much of a BBQ fan but loves this place. As a bonus, my hair stylist is on this side of town. Anytime I'm having my hair done, I stop in here afterward for delicious BBQ. :) The owners are friendly, so is their staff.

I give them a five because I could find a reason not too! Clean, friendly, attentive, and the food a amazing too. The ribs were spot on, no sauce needed. Brisket was a little wanting but very good. Hot links pretty tasty. We will be back

I met my Daughter here for lunch yesterday. We meet for lunch once a month and we try to go somewhere that neither of us has been to OR a place that we both really enjoy. We usually go to places that feature a nice selection of Salads. She had suggested BBQ last month, so I researched it through Yelp and their Website and decided this was the place to try. I always like to Preview a Menu, when possible -- I don't want to make anyone behind me wait and I don't like to make rushed decisions. I decided on the 2 Meat Dinner Combo and so did my Daughter. I got the Pulled Pork (because of the reviews) and the Smoked Turkey with BBQ Beans and Cole Slaw. Plus two Beverages. I asked the young man behind the counter if HE considered the Cole Slaw to be sweet? He pondered it for about a minute and then said 'No, it's not, not really'. GOOD!! That's what I wanted to hear!! Several of the Yelp Reviewers had said that it had a garlic / onion taste and that's what I like :) Let me say that I would give their Cole Slaw 5 Stars and I appreciated the HONESTY of the young man who took our order. The BBQ Bean that so many people seemed to like, were about a 3 Star to me. They were good, but not AWESOME! The Pulled Pork was wonderful and I also liked the Smoked Turkey. I ordered the 2 Meat Dinner with the intention to bring home the Turkey for dinner. My Daughter got the Ribs and Pulled Pork Combo with the BBQ Beans and the Macaroni Salad. She seemed to really enjoy the Ribs (3 of them) and decided to bring home 1 of them plus some of her BBQ Beans to my Grandson -- so I gave her some of my Smoked Turkey. She LOVES Turkey, always has. She finished her Pulled Pork, 1 Rib, the Macaroni Salad, some of her Beans and the Turkey. We both were happy with our meals. As some of the Reviewers have mentioned, they have 2 BBQ Sauces, one milder than the other. My Daughter chose the mild sauce and i chose the spicier one -- but it's really not very spicy, but has a good flavor. I had decided to bring my Husband home 'The Bulldozer' for dinner before I ever left the house. My Husband owns 2 Smokers and LOVES BBQ'd Meats. And one of my favorite Yelpers had highly recommended it!! Back to the counter, to place a 'To Go' order. I asked the young man to please put the sauce in a separate container. I didn't want his sandwich to be soggy. 'The Bulldozer' has 1/4 pound of Smoked Brisket, a slice of Smoked Turkey and a split Hot Link on a Hamburger Bun. I asked the young man how he recommended that I reheat it for my Hubby and he thought that the oven would dry it out and if I removed the bun heated it for 30 seconds and then reassemble it -- it wouldn't be soggy -- so that's what I did!! I must say that it smelled DIVINE! I also got him an order of the Cole Slaw, because it's very much like mine and I thought that he would like it. I left the Cole Slaw container in the bag with the hot sandwich and my Husband didn't care for it lukewarm -- but that was my fault. He said that had it have been cold , he would have eaten it. Here's the things that I would change or consider changing. I don't like Pepsi Products, but they do have Iced Tea - Sweetened and Unsweetened and a Lemonade. I think charging $1.99 for a small of chips is too much $$, I understand that they have to make a profit, but I stopped and picked up a bag on my way home for Hubby's dinner. Lastly, as mentioned by other Reviewers -- they need to add a few more side items. Definately a Small Salad OR maybe some Celery & Carrot Sticks. Macaroni & Cheese would be wonderful and so would some Collard Greens or Mustard Greens. I understand that hot sides are more difficult -- but would seem more Dinner like and even if you charge another .50 cents or whatever for a 'Hot Side' that would make sense to me. Maybe only offer 'Hot Sides' after 3 pm.

I had the special: bbq brisket tacos in corn shells, potato salad and chips. The tacos were phenomenal! Sweet and smoky brisket as good as any I had living in the South. Homemade pico was an excellent topper, set off by fresh cilantro. Potato salad was right on the money. Staff were very helpful and polite. Great atmosphere!

Local gem close to the city's airport. I'm from KC so I'd like to think I know what a plate of BBQ should taste like. The Pulled Pork and Brisket were both juicy and fell apart which the touch of a fork. Will be back next time in town.

Love the ribs with mild sauce. Had the coleslaw, a lil onion flavored for me, but it was okay. Meat was just right tenderness. Cashier was friendly. It was Self service and food came fast.

We found "When Pigs Fly" 3 yrs ago. We just love the consistent quality of the many selections, although we always seem to order our favorites. My wife orders "Pulled Pork with double Baked beans" Always!!! I on the other hand really enjoy the Best Ribs in town and the Hot Links, with the homemade Cold-slaw and Beans. I can assure you if you try it you'll be hooked.

Great BBQ- Visiting from out of town and found this place. Got to check this place out

  • Valentina M.

The ribs were very salty but still good. They use a dry rub instead of a sauce. They were out of burnt ends so didn't get to try them. The pulled pork and beef brisket were delish! Wish they had some fresh veggies for a side choice. Got my fill of protein!

Officially the BEST bbq in Wichita, I've had two brothers, hog wild, pig in pig out, but this is the best! The owner is very nice and professional, I like the pictures on the sidewalk that shows the stages the restaurant went through to get to where it is now. The pulled pork was the BEST I've ever had, I live in East Wichita and will be driving over to this location for all my bbq cravings!

  • Kyla K.

Excellent BBQ. I had 2 meats, ribs and brisket. Hubby had turkey and brisket. They dry rub their meats and have wet sauce in the table. The meat literally falls off the ribs. Only in town three days will probably go back for seconds.

When Pigs Fly BBQ is probably the most underrated and underloved barbecue joint on the west side, maybe in the entire city. The establishment is always clean and bright and the food is outstanding. The brisket, pork, and turkey are all excellent options, and the salmon will surprise you with how fresh it tastes. The sides don't go outside the box too far, but they shouldn't. This is another place that does NOT serve the traditional super-sweet coleslaw and potato salad. That might not suit you, but it DOES suit me. The baked beans are hearty and perfectly cooked. But, the true star here is the chicken. That might not be what you're looking for at a barbecue joint, but you really owe it to yourself to try it here. It is some of the most moist and flavorful poultry you'll ever sink your teeth into. The service has been outstanding everytime I've been there, and they also have catered to my workplace multiple times and has been excellent everytime. The barbecue sauce is sweet, but not overpowering... and the hot barbecue sauce will definitely get you a good burn. If you like barbecue at all, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't try this place first.

I had just flown into town on business. It was lunch time and I got on my Yelp app to see what restaurants were close. Found out I was less than a mile from this place so decided to try it out. The ribs came well recommended so I got myself a 1/2 slab. Good dry rub, meaty with a very tasty flavor. Some I dipped in sauce, some I didn't. I'm not a big sauce fan anywhere, unless the meat needs some enhancement. I didn't need to dip, but I wanted to sample their sauces. Good stuff. I'd like to come back and maybe try the Bulldozer or at least some brisket. Staff was helpful and friendly to a first-timer.

I had the meat by the pound. It was delicious. Both the texture and flavor were right. I'll definitely come back.

Really nice Hot version of Q sauce. Decent beans... mixed beans with good flavor. Slaw had a touch of garlic. I like that. And the meat??? Beef was sliced thick. Medium smoke. Tender. But a little dry. Very good Pork was pulled. Medium smoke. A little under spiced for me. Tender. Very good. Hot links had a tough skin, and course texture... exactly what I like. Very good. Ribs were a little more smoky, seasoned, and cooked just right. They were almost 4.5 stars. If Pig In Pig Out were not in town this place would get 5 stars. They may get 5 on my next visit. : ) This place is a solid effort. They serve good meat and I'd lay down my dollars here anytime.

What's not to love!? Great service! Amazing BBQ. I tried a sample of everything and it's all pretty much amazing! The brisket was moist and the BBQ sauce made it more tasty! The ribs are a must as well! Try if you are in the area :)

Great ribs, hot links and pulled pork. The loaded baked potatoes are huge and extremely tasty! The cole slaw is amazing. My husband and I agree this is the best BBQ in town!

Only had the brisket dinner so cannot comment on other meats. Big thick slices of overcooked brisket. The baked beans are excellent, well prepared good seasoning. Others sides nothing to write home about.. There are better BBQ places in Wichita.

As I braved the dark, dangerous, and unfamiliar streets that were West Wichita during rush hour, I was hitting myself for embarking on such a foolish venture. The West side? Really? It's a completely different world over there. No one knows what these people are capable of. I was out of my element. I was scared, alone, and didn't know where I was. I was spotting Le Monde Cafes and Taco Shops left and right, like ghosts from my East side's past. I wanted to go home. But then, from the middle the Crossroads mall, shined a light like a beacon into my soul. Or my stomach - they're located in roughly the same place. I saw a figure, like an angel, majestic wings beckoning me to it. Turns out, the angel was actually a pig with aviator's goggles, and the restaurant was When Pigs Fly. It should be no surprise that the Choys spent six years at Pig In, Pig Out, because the quality of the food and much of the same techniques are employed here in their own place: roughly the same sweet sauce, the same trio of baked beans, and the potato salad. They also share a similarity in cooking their meats, which is to say they both taste excellent, with a masterful employment of the smoker to create many meat masterpieces. One thing PIPO doesn't have is the Bulldozer, an excellent sandwich of 1/4 brisket, a big slice of turkey, and a split sausage. You would think that trying to contain such a sandwich between two halves of a bun would be unruly, but it held together surprisingly well, the flavors of all three animals converging into a tasty meatgasm in my mouth. My only complaints about the sandwich are the lack of pulled pork - simply because I like the stuff - and the brisket itself wasn't as warm as it probably should have been. Despite my well-noted dislike for the sweet KC-style barbecue sauces, I was surprised to find me using more of it than I thought I would on my sandwich, the sweetness not nearly as overpowering when it has to fight all that meat for my tastebuds. Like many sauces I've tried, there's virtually no difference in spiciness between the hot and the mild. I like barbecue places experimenting with their meat, and the pulled pork tacos I saw on special during my visit, combined with the Brunswick stew I read in another review, lead me to believe this is very much the case. Combine this with the friendly atmosphere (the staff seemed to know everyone on a first-name basis), and the killer 'cue, and you're good to go. When interviewed by the paper, Brian Choy, in talking about his new restaurant, mentions that he feels there's not a lot of good barbecue in Wichita, and I would agree, though with the opening of When Pigs Fly, we can chalk up one more for the good guys. (As an aside, the design and flow of this restaurant and its website is very well done for a new business. It should be no surprise that the elder Choy is in the marketing/advertising business.) (As another aside, note that the address is 7011 W Central *Ave*. Omitting that suffix leads Google Maps to believe that the place is located on the very edge of town, as I discovered the first time I attempted to find this place. WPF is located on Central and Ridge.)

Very good bbq ribs with a lot of flavor and no need to add any sauce. Would have to be considered one of the best in wichita. Staff is very friendly and service is quick

On a Friday night with a waiting line nearly to the door, I was hesitant to enter my new favorite bbq place for a second go around. Surprisingly my wait was only a few minutes as one man handled the register and knocked out the front pass like a pro. Of course the front pass wouldn't of been busy if it hadn't been for the kitchen crew keeping up with the customer rush. Brunswick Stew was on the specials menu and boy it was. Basically think of vegetable stew, with a base of their sweet and tangy bbq sauce, now add pulled pork. Lots of pulled pork. Most Impressive. And ya know what else? Their ribssss. I love em, I love em. Dry rubbed with a salty something, it provides a crispness that is skin deep, leaving my teeth to slide into the moist, fall of the bone meat. Ooohhhh baabyyyy. All this aside, I will testify to two very mild failures. With a to-go order of stew, one would expect a plastic spoon to be provided... didn't happen. Also, the stew was supposed to come with a 'buttery roll', instead I was greeted with two pieces of boring white bread. Somebody call the Whaaaaaambulance.

I am a weekly patron at this restaurant. I dont know of a better place to get BBQ. Their ribs are probably the popular choice here. It is also one of my favorites. I like their brisket because it is very lean with almost no fat on it. This causes it to be a bit dry on a rare occasion, but having it lean is the way I like it! And it is always tender. They also have weekly specials that are not on the main menu. Every week, they offer someting different. Some of my favorite weekly specials include the Brunswick stew, chicken bombs, and smoked meatballs.

The food is good but both it and the service can be inconsistent. The ribs were a nice tasty dry rub one bite - and a god awful over-seasoned salty mess the next. But overall it was good stuff.

We got the family pack to go. The brisket and pork had a great flavor and were moist, great baked bean, but other sides are so-so. Will definately go back!

When Pigs Fly is the next time I will come here. The brisket on my sandwich was acceptable but nothing to right home about. Maybe thats the problem,my home is Texas and my Bar B Que standards are high. At least they could toast the bun, My bun was litterally cold to the touch and mouth, wich made for an interesting first bite. To be honest conmbining that cold bun with the cold sauce at the table and... I recommend you skip this place and continue to search for a true BBQ contender.

  • David S.

I had the brisket sandwich: basically a slab of meat and an oversized hamburger bun. The meat seemed well cooked but had no seasonings or sauce to speak of and no toppings whatsoever, which made for a very boring sandwich indeed--wrapped in a bun that was clearly just removed from the fridge. I had to drown it in BBQ sauce just to choke it down. It also comes with no sides but the price doesn't reflect that.

Stumbled across this new BBQ place when I went out to eat at another soon to be relocated west side BBQ joint (won't mention their name so as to not take away from the goodness that is 'When Pigs Fly' It was middle of the afternoon today and there was a fair amount of business. It is a pretty large place and the guy at the register was a sweetheart. You could truly tell he was happy to be the first person you meet when you walk in. He was friendly and helpful to all the people I saw him take orders from. The food was fantastic. I really mean it. I had the 2 meat dinner with ribs, pulled pork, potato salad and bbq beans. I loved the sweet potato salad and the pulled pork was to die for. The original place I was planning on going to used to have good ribs but I gave up on theirs a long time ago, but was ready to give WPF a try and glad I did. The meat was so tender and juicy and was worth every penny. I told some friends about it and they were going there tonight for dinner, can't wait to see what they have to say. Highly recommend!

I've been here three times and they're worth going to. Friendly staff and good food. So far from least liked to most liked, I've had a spud with sausage link on it and cheese. (it was ok, I thought it needed more), pulled pork sandwich (as good as other places), and Ribs (I loved the ribs and the seasoning rub they use). I do wish they had a spicier BBQ sauce. What they consider spicy, I consider average. I have nothing against this place and I wish them the best but, for me, this isn't the place I'd make a special trip too for BBQ but if I was in the area and craving BBQ, I'd pull in with no regrets.

After readying the reviews on here, I decided to check this place out. The food was great! I got pulled pork and turkey, and both were delicious. It's been hard to find good turkey at a bbq place in Wichita, and this place finally delivered. The owner is a younger guy that is exceptionally nice. I would recommend this place to everyone.

  • Philip K.

Brian Choy (never met anyone he didn't like) usually runs the front and greets everyone like they're old friends, while is wife Kendra is running the kitchen operation. She's the one with her head down knocking the orders out and making Brian look good as he schmoozes with every customer making this a neighborhood-type BBQ joint. The food is excellent! In order of excellence are the RIBS, Pig Wings (when they're on special), Brisket, Pulled Pork, Loaded Spud w/Meat, BBQ Sandwiches. I haven't tried their sausages, or their turkey yet. I'm not impressed with their baked beans but they're OK, their coleslaw is wonderful though and is always part of my order.
