I absolutely love this place! The chef and the waitress are super nice ,best service I've ever gotten! I came with my parents, we had a whole catfish, catfish filets, okra, coleslaw, onion rings, shrimp and cornbread and it all was absolutely delicious. The food tasted fresh and homemade. The sweet tea was delicious also! I def recommend this place to anyone!

I found this little place by accident and I must say the food was great. I had wanted to change this rating to a 5. The owner and staff went above and beyond to accomodate our class while we were there in Fort Leavenworth!!!. Call ahead for your food so you don't have to wait long. The customer service was awesome. I walked in and they made me feel welcome. Thank you guys for some awesome food!!!! I hope to see you soon!

I hate to be the one to give them the lowest stars right now. But I have to be honest, here we go.. Soo we ordered three orders for the two of us, some for now some for later situation. 2 orders of the catfish nuggets with cornbread and a side ( think about $7). 1 order catfish fillets large with cornbread and two sides (forgot this price). But amazing prices for seafood. The sides we got were: fried mushrooms, fries, fried okra, and yams. Wait I got dessert too!! Yes when I try seafood places I go all out. So yea we got two small peach cobblers each was $2.50. The FISH.. Tasted so fresh. Extremely crispy loved but either they pieces were to small as in thin or cooked alil over. The fish inside was dry, and this goes for both nuggets and fillets. I've had some amazing nuggets in Arkansas, this is what I am comparing it to. It could have been a bad day though, so I will definitely come back. THE SIDES.. Yams was good not too sweet like I love them but not to bland either. Fried mushrooms were good, small though. Fried okra ok but I don't like the slime balls to much. The small peach cobbler very good, they balance out the small cup I think. It had just enough of fruit and bread in it. STAFF.. I forget the lady name but she is from England and told us stories while giving great service. The cook is someone's sweet grandmother bless her heart. They play old school tunes and the air smells of the best fish fry at your grandmothers. Tiny area with two tables so I would call in and just pick up. I just love this place

The food is 5 stars but the cramped space and hot temps could bring the overall experience down to a four. From now on it will be takeout for me! Wonderful food! The ladies were so friendly and welcoming!

Run don't walk to Excellent Choice! Fellow Yelpers in the Kansas/Missouri area - Excellent Choice is a must stop! If you are located in Kansas City or anywhere within a 100 mile radius this place is well worth the drive. It is a small, hole in the wall type establishment with the best food in the area. Their catfish is truly amazing, a perfect cornmeal seasoning and fried golden brown - crispy and tasty - by far the best seafood around. All of the sides and desserts are homemade - all incredible! The owners are extremely friendly and helpful, by far the best service I have received since arriving to the KC area earlier last year. I recommend take-out as there are only two tables in the place. Highly recommend!

Why does this place not have more reviews!??! It's all homemade and never disappoints. It's not fast food so don't go there expecting it. I stopped eating catfish years ago before it was off-putting, but I must've never had good catfish. We ordered catfish, chicken wings, and fried shrimp. All were very good. You have to order the chef's special early in the day if you want to get some. Ms. Rachel is sweetest lady you'll meet and her cook has a golden touch with the food. Try the mac and cheese as well as the greens. Nothing we've had from here was bad. Wish I lived in Leavenworth to be able to go here weekly!

WoW!!! WoW !!! WoW!!! While on a visit to Leavenworth, a local directed us to Excellent Choice, and that it is.... What a wonderful little place, Great Catfish, mouthwatering Mac & Cheese, even the ice tea was the best. The food is complimented by gracious owners who welcome you not only to their restaurant but also into their lives. Rachel and "mom" have a very unique relationship not only as co-owners but as mom and daughter. You will definitely leave with a full belly and a warm feeling. This restaurant is a diamond in the rough and we will definitely visit again.

Wow, trying to track this restaurant down on Yelp just to write this review was difficult. And that's a darned shame. This place is AMAZING! OK, here's the deal. When someone says, "I don't like [insert random food here]." I immediately think (as an adventurous diner and home cook, myself) that you probably just haven't had it prepared correctly. I've experienced a lot of people who swear to me that they "hate" catfish (this is something that I understand in theory, but I KNOW they've just never had it prepared properly, because catfish is delicious). Excellent Choice does catfish right! Having moved from San Francisco/Oakland, CA to Leavenworth, KS I've been looking for good food, close to my house since I got here. Sometimes you just don't want to cook or drive into KC just for a meal. I say with absolute conviction, from a girl who LOVES soul food, that Excellent Choice is the absolute best food in and around Leavenworth. I'm hoping more people find this place and frequent it. The owners are super nice. Their hot sauce is really really good (like, better than Crystal, somehow and WAY better than Tabasco). Their collard greens are simple and awesome, their mac and cheese is prepared perfectly, i.e. it doesn't separate like some OTHER soul food places I've been to (yuck!) and is perfectly creamy. Their catfish is lightly breaded in cornmeal, and cooked perfectly every time! This is no easy task, BTW. Wait, did I mention their cornbread!?! It's perfect, too! I cannot say enough good things about this place's food! My one slight issue is that they aren't open weekends, which is a bummer, as those are often the days I want to relax and not cook. The thing is, that no matter what, I maintain that THIS IS DEFINITELY THE BEST RESTAURANT IN LEAVENWORTH. Period. P.S. Their pies and desserts are also great, just get one (or two, or three) and see for yourself! Everything is homemade and fresh.... I love this place.

I'm glad I checked Yelp for recommendations! This is clearly a beloved local place. The owners were exceptionally friendly, and even greeted me by name when I came in to pick up my takeout order. The catfish is perfectly cooked and the tartar sauce and hot sauce are great with it. I was also totally impressed with the mac and cheese -- definitely get that! If catfish isn't your thing, they offer a few other entrees, a daily special, or a side sampler. Worth checking out!

Nice hole-in-the-wall catfish place outside the gate of Ft Leavenworth. Couple plastic tables to sit at inside, they cook everything fresh, no frills, just good food made with a smile. Always like to find a local, non-chain place to eat while on the road and this was a good stop.

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! SERVICE: I found out about Excellent Choice through a friend. I was told to call ahead to make sure the to go order was ready on my way into work. I called and the lady that took my order was super nice. I was told that my food would be ready in about 10 mins. So i stopped in on my way to work approx. 15 mins later and they were just finishing it up. The lady at the register was VERY busy yet still very friendly and very helpful and got me in and out. FOOD CHOICE:I got the Large Catfish Filet. It comes with 5 catfish strips, 2 sides, and cornbread. My two sides were French Fries and Mac N Cheese. I also opted for their chocolate cake as a dessert. It was ALOT of food. APPEARANCE AND PORTION: When I opened my container of food I immediately decided that I probably should have gotten a smaller portion. The food looked and smelled amazing and there was plenty of everything. TASTE: The catfish was perfectly cooked. It was lightly battered and tasted delicious. The pieces were about the size of your typical chicken strip. Then the French Fries which were also delicious. I prefer my french fries a TAD bit more crispy but they still tasted really good. Next the Mac N Cheese was in its own seperate bowl. It was really good and wasnt mushy and soupy like most others Mac n Cheese. Then the cornbread.... I am not normally a fan of most cornbread. Its either usually too dry or too sweet or just doesnt taste right. This cornbread was PERFECT. It kindled a new love for cornbread for me. Last but certainly not least, the Chocolate Cake. It took me a long time to get to this generously large piece of cake as i was rather full from eating my dinner, but let me tell you when i got to it i was definitely not disappointed. It was delicious as well. Would be perfect with a tall glass of milk. It wasnt overly sweet, well overly sweet considering it was chocolate on chocolate cake . RESULT: I would and am going to recommend this place to as many people as i can. Not only was the food amazing and delicious but the service was friendly and on point. If you are looking for something new or have seen this place and been weary about trying it I URGE you to go inside. IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!

Excellent food from a small, clean, and friendly establishment just outside the main gate at Leavenworth. Plan on take-away as even though there are two tables the shop is tight and if cold outside you'd constantly feel the chill from the ins and outs of others. Great cornbread, catfish, jalapeno hush puppies and sweet potato pie. My collard greens were fine but with so many other tasty sounding sides to choose from I would skip them in the future. Easy walk from the Fairfield Inns and Suites.

Found this place on a road trip with my dad from Woodstock NY to Denver CO. Very likely the best food I've eaten in a long time. For that matter the owner was one of the sweetest people ever. She was extremely friendly and came around the counter to chat with us before we took off. Couldn't have hoped for more. I recommend that anyone passing through NEEDS to stop here.

I didn't know this gem was a few miles from the house. Got a recommendation from a friend and lord I am so happy I came here. Nothing's wrong with a touch of the south in your back yard! My first visit I had catfish nuggets, Mac and cheese, yams, potato salad, cabbage and peach cobbler. My intentions were to split can have some for lunch and dinner. Yeah that didn't happen. The food was so fresh I ate it all in one sitting. Omg!!! I returned the next week for Gumbo, again very good. The only this I would change is the amount of rice.... It was a little too much. I like my gumbo more soupy. Great flavor, not to spicy. They will know me by name before it's over..

I have but two regrets in life; one is that I didn't go to Excellent Choice sooner and two, that I had a snack this morning so I didn't have room for their dessert at lunch. I can't wait to bring my visiting friends and family here. And to go back for some peach cobbler. This place sums up everything I love about "hole in the wall" places: delicious food and friendly service. The food is incredible and the prices are more than reasonable. The food is served hot and tastes homemade. I didn't even know i liked catfish until today. And if you can't eat catfish for some reason, it's still worth trying this place for the wings and shrimp. Service is genuine and efficient. Excellent Choice is owned and operated by Rachael & her mother in law (the chef). They anticipate all of your needs from including condiments with your meal, to providing wet hand towelettes on the table, to offering refills as you prepare to leave. They know their regulars by name and there are quite a few of them. I even overhead one guy who just ate there yesterday. A nice touch is that you can order online. I'm sure I'll be doing that the next time I'm running late and need to get dinner on the table.

Oh my. This place is special. Delicious homemade food. A great story. Super friendly owners to include the very pleasant Rachel (manager) and sweet Earthell (cook). I had the superb fried chicken, awesome potato salad and incredible sweet potato pie for dessert. Going back for gumbo next!

This place is awesome. The fried Catfish is delicious and cooked to order. Very tender, perfect crisp along with great potato salad and some of the best sweet tea I've had in a while. Really cute awesome find!
