It's been a while since I ate at Cielito Lindo, but all those months away have really distilled my experience into a simple thought: it wasn't really that good. The flavors were bland and the rice was overly hard. I've had a lot of experience with Mexican restaurants of this ilk and this one just wasn't as good as any of them. The Mexican food scene in Lawrence is already a little lacking, but I'd suggest you check somewhere else that lacks a little less. Review: 2 stars.

Food was pretty authentic, especially for the midwest! The green sauce is not spicy, but is flavorful. You can tell that the meats have been marinated and slow cooked. Yum! Service was great! Good flan, sopapilla is flat and cripsy- not what most would expect, but very tasty!

The tamales are great, but the rest of the menu is kind of hit or miss. Margaritas are delicious and fairly cheap. The outdoor seating makes it a great spring and early summer place to go for a TGIF or just to take a load off.

Celito Lindo is one of the best Mexican places I have eaten at in Lawrence. Their fajita quesadillas are the best! Service is good and its always lively and has a fun atmosphere. Also very good location.

The atmosphere is good, especially on a beautiful night on the patio. The service was slow to start but picked up after a while. Biggest disappointment was the food. Bland fajitas and watered down margaritas. Many better Mexican restaurants for better prices in Lawrence.

My favorite Mexican restaurants in Lawrence. I frequent this restaurants at least 3 times a month. The Margareta's ($11 a pitcher on Thursdays!!!) are really strong and quite flavorful. The burritos are nothing that amazing, but they are pretty cheap and they keep the chips flowing the entire time you are seated. Waiters and waitresses are really fun, and if you go for your birthday you get a free shot of tequila. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone who is in the mood for Mexican in Lawrence.

Friday, I went to Cielito Lindo here in Lawrence, my FAVORITE Mexican food restaurant here in town. They were super busy as the weather was nice and their patio was full of people. My friend and I got seated pretty quick, but it took a min before anyone came by to get our drink order. About 10 min later our drinks come out (a sangria and a margarita). I order my dinner, my friend wasn't eating. About 45 min after ordering, I see what looks like my food going outside, while I am inside. I figured it wasn't my food, but sure enough I look down from where I'm sitting and our waiter is bringing my food in from outside. He drops it off to me and rushes off before I can tell him that it's cold (I checked it since I saw it go outside). I waited a little bit to see if he was going to come back, but he never did and I was starving so I ate a cold dinner. 45 min after that my friend and I are waiting for our bill while our drinks are empty. We wait and wait and we can't get the attention of our waiter. Finally, we decide to walk out. Our waiter only came by to drop our drinks off and to drop off my cold dinner. It was NOT our intention to 'dine and dash' but we had it with the horrible service. Of course as we're walking out, the waiter finally gives us attention asking us if we're going to pay for our food. Instead of arguing with him over the horrible service and the fact my food was COLD and our drinks were empty for a while, I pay our bill with no tip. This is the third time I have had service like this there and I will NOT being going back regardless of the great food.

Nothing special here. I'm not opposed to the type of cheesy greasy Americanized mexican food that they serve. And the queso (though I'm generally a sucker for queso) is really very good. The margaritas are bad though, and the service is as well. If these things were different this restaurant could have 4 star potential. When I was there recently the margaritas tasted like they were from a really bad mix. The server was nice, but messed up several times and didn't check on us to see how things were- I had to track him down to let him know that there was meat in my dish when I had specified several times that I was vegetarian. He exchanged it for me, but it took a while. I didn't bother requesting another margarita when mine didn't have salt, even though I had specifically asked for that as well.

This is probably my go-to as far as Lawrence Mexican restaurants. This is one of the best places to host a birthday party (cheap margarita pitchers and free tequila shots for the birthday celebrant!). Beyond that, the location is great with nearby bars to visit and there are plenty of outdoor tables to sit and chill. The food itself is similar to what you'd find at other Mexican restaurants in Lawrence.

Great food! The guacamole is amazing and the margaritas are cheap. The service wasn't the best but it was worth it for how great the food was.

As of right now, Cielito Lindo is my favorite sit-down Mexican restaurant in Lawrence. I've been there a number of times over the past few months and I've never had anything bad to say about it. First off, big up's to any Mexican restaurant that gives you a bottle of salsa at your table to fill up your own dishes. It's such a good idea! The chips are always fresh and warm and the salsa, both mild and hot, tastes real fresh too. Their tacos are really good, better than places like On The Border and Carlos O'Kelly's. The beef has a great marinated taste to it and they top them with mozzarella cheese that makes it just that much better. The refried beans are good, but the spanish rice is probably the best I've had. Just perfect. At other times, I've had the flauta's which are exquisite. Those came with their guacamole which was fantastic as well. The wait staff has always been really friendly during all my visits. When my friend ordered vegetarian chili and had to send it back, they were apologetic and happy to do so. One of the best restaurant staffs in all of Lawrence! Cielito Lindo can get packed in the evening and on weekends, and it's because of how wonderful it really is. If you're looking for some tasty authentic Mexican cuisine in Lawrence, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better place.

This is a pretty average Mexican restaurant, in a city with dozens of them, but it does benefit greatly from its downtown location, its extensive outdoor and upstairs seating and its recently remodeled interior. The food and drink selection is good, but again, nothing out of the ordinary. If you have a big party, and you call ahead, the staff is happy to accommodate you, even if you've got one or two of those guys who only orders a beer and some chips and guacamole (guilty as charged). All told, there are better places to eat downtown, but there are certainly worse places to start a Saturday evening.

My favorite mexican restaurant in town! Always love going here, especially when the weather gets nice so we can sit on the patio and enjoy a margarita!

The food is incredible and consistent... This is our go-to in town for a special night out or just a Thursday when the weather is nice and we don't want to cook. We love their fajitas, their chorizo and their green sauce are both uniquely good. The service can be spotty - definitely depends who you get. Ask for Ray and you're likely to have a good experience!

This place would have received another star if the service was better. I was warned about the service before I went here so the problem must be pervasive. On the flip side, if this place did not have a big patio it would have received only one star. The patio was great and the reason I decided to try this place. Being seated outside was fast and simple. It took A LONG TIME for a server to come by and drop off some chips and water. It then took A LONGER TIME to get an order taken. Our order was simple. A burrito and a taco. We then waited A VERY LONG TIME for our dinner to come. There was two points in the evening, one before my order was taken and one before my food came where I set a timer and if it had gone off I would have left and walked to Chipotle. I have never contemplated doing that before. That is how slow this place was. When my food came, it was not hot. You could tell that it was once hot but had been sitting out for so long that it had become not hot. That was just as disappointing as the slow service. The food was very standard Mexican American food. A plate of rice, some tortillas filled with stuff topped with cheese and put under a broiler or microwaved to melt the cheese. This is not a fancy operation. Their green sauce had a good taste. Would have been better if it was hot. To be blunt - there is no reason to go here except to sit on the patio and get a beverage which means its only a viable place to go 7 or 8 months out of the year. There are plenty of other places that have equal or better mexican food and all have to have better service. I will not suggest going here again unless its for an outside drink.

We love this place and eat here whenever we can. The food is so fast we often feel as if it's our own private kitchen. Far from bland, as I saw on a previous review, the seasonings are perfect to highlight the food, not bury it in spices. Having been raised in southern Arizona, I liken the flavors to that of my classmates' mothers' dishes, and that is saying something good. The lunch is blazing fast, affordable, and robust. Give them a chance to fill your belly and you'll be glad you did! We also order delivery occasionally, but love to eat in because of the service.

We have always enjoyed the food at Cielito Lindo, and have never had bad service. I don't know what happened on the days the complainers are referring to. Great Margaritas, salsa, guacamole, and over all food. If you go into a place and act like a jerk you might get bad service..Just sayin' And they always accomodate our son who has a bunch of food allergies.

My wife and ate lunch there last week. The service was good but there was only 3 other couples there eating so we had no wait. I had a shredded beef chimichanga and my wife had the grilled chicken. The food was fresh and portions were large. What was particularly nice was the spices that were used. Both dishes were packed with flavor and not spicy hot but flavorful. Since we travel to Lawrence frequently, we have tried many places. This is hands down the best Mexican food in Lawrence.

The food is good, but you are really here for the atmosphere. On a sunny day, there is nothing like sipping a margarita and enjoying some chips and salsa on the patio. There are plenty of tables, so you never have to worry about finding a seat. If you are wanting more than just chips, I definitely recommend the Sancho burrito. It's a giant flour tortilla wrapped around chicken, rice and beans covered in enchilada sauce with a side of sour cream and guacamole! After discovering the Sancho burrito, I had a hard time going back to some of my previous favorites. When I am in the mood to switch things up, I also like the numerous combinations, enchilada suizas and fajita quesadilla wrap. I have been here at least 25 times and have only had bad service once. Servers are normally very nice and attentive. They keep the chip basket full and the salsa coming. Margaritas are delicious. I am a classic type of girl and enjoy mine on the rocks. I believe it's Thursdays when pitchers are on special for cheap!

We ate here for the first time in August 2013 while in the midst of moving, so I did not have time to write a review. I recently returned for some follow-up visits and now provide my candid opinions. The restaurant is large and the service pretty good. It reminds me of a real Mexican cantina inside with colorful decor and an open feel with a balcony on the second floor overlooking the dining room. The patio in front is large and inviting on a mildl day or evening and Cielito Lindo has been named the 2014 BEST OF LAWRENCE "Best Outdoor Dining" spot, a great place to have a drink, appetizer, and/or meal with friends and family. The margaritas are decent, both on-the-rocks and blended, but compared to most places in town they are overpriced unless you can catch a special as we did recently ($12.99 for a pitcher on a Sunday night). The chips are abundant and appear homemade and the salsa one of the best I have fond in Lawrence. The guacamole ($3.99 for a "regular") is reasonably sized and not bad, containing tomatoes as is the norm in many restaurants and a faux pas in my eyes. The regular queso blanco (white cheese dip - $3.99) comes in a similar size bowl, but was lukewarm and runny, not thick enough to cling to a chip and making quite a mess on the table and my clothes as I attempted to get it from bowl to mouth. The tacos and enchiladas are adequate, yet boring. Tacos are tasty enough, coming in small, prefab shells and the small cheese and onion enchiladas are bland with little melted cheese. The chili relleno's are well done, coming with plenty of cheese in a large chili surrounded by fluffy egg, but again the sauce was lacking flavor. Tostadas, which are hard to mess up, are OK, nothing special. Combinations are reasonably priced ($7.99) and ala carte items can be mixed and matched for a cost effective meal. The carnitas appeared underwhelming at first look after arrival, but were crispy, well seasoned, and delicious pork tips that when pulled apart (as most restaurants serve them) filled the four corn tortillas that accompanied the meal ($10.49). I asked the waiter if the dish came with guacamole and pico di gallo before ordering, and he assured me it did, but when the plate arrived there was barely enough guac for one taco and zero pico di gallo. The rice and beans were flavorful and good. Some canned jalapeños topped the dish for some unknown reason with little value added. In conclusion, Cielito Lindo is comparable to the other mediocre Mexican restaurants in Lawrence, all of which fail in comparison to some of my favorite spots in Mexico, California, and Texas. Until they get rid of this bartender I have to give It one star. She had headphones in. I tried to get her attention three times and I never got her attention because she was wearing headphones. I love the service and the food for the most part, but how can they let a waitress wear headphones while on her shift? It's ridiculous

Cielito makes me so happy. When you need your greasy Tex-Mex, they're there for you! Their chips (complimentary) taste fresh and come with individual bowls of salsa, which I really appreciate! They'll bring you hot salsa upon request. Their cheese sauce is exactly what you need. It's creamy and savory and oh goodness, I could just eat chips & queso & margaritas all day. I highly recommend the burrito arandas. It comes with your choice of protein (including shrimp!) and all the fixin's (including guac!) and is slathered in their cheese sauce. Margaritas are standard, and made with a mix. They usually have some size margarita on special, so go for that one! The patio is also wonderful, definitely "Lawrence's Best Patio!" It's a great place to drink your marg on a hot day. They are also happy to split checks. You pay at the front and just tell the cashier which items are yours. Good news for big groups! I do not recommend their "basic" Mexican food, which mostly comes from the combination menu. I mean the stuff like "chalupa", "tamale", "tostado", etc. It's not very interesting and not very good tasting. Order from the more interesting part of the menu where they actually describe the food! The biggest downside is the service. They're nice enough, but often forget stuff, like I usually ask for corn tortillas instead of flour, and they still bring me flour tortillas about half the time. The service is worse on the patio, which makes a little sense since they can't see your water or chip bowl is empty.

Best patio in Lawrence. Great place to come with friends when the weather is nice and enjoy a margarita and some Tex-Mex. the food and drinks are good but far from exceptional, I come for the patio more than anything. Margaritas are pretty typical but you can get generous portions or pitchers which is nice for a night with friends. The food is underwhelming. Nothing to brag about but not distasteful either. Wait staff is kind and attentive.

Huge inside, good place for groups, though paying can make for a long line. Tamales have a nutmeggy taste - very good, Chile relleno is good enough. Last time ordered a huge shrimp burrito covered in white sauce...mmm. I tried the horchata, and it was a bit too "spicy" for me, compared to others I've had. Be careful coming on weekend nights, busy and sometime there are too many birthdays (singing and sombrero)!

  • Pamela C.

Not the highest quality but I absolutely love it! There is always a great environment and the staff is one that you want to become friends with. Drinks are great (and strong) and like the food. Lots of birthdays celebrated here. Definitely the best queso in Lawrence. Just wish they delivered!!!

Great margaritas, outside seating after work with friends. Food is average, I've had to send back huevos rancheros back for over cooked yolks. But like the atmosphere.

This was one of my favorite places to eat in Lawrence until tonight. When our waiter asked if we wanted a second round of drinks we all responded yes. Our margaritas made it, but no beers. Our waiter never appeared with the missing drinks, and we watched him walk around the restaurant, sit in a booth texting on his phone, and stand at the bar for over 30 mins. When he finally came back to our table we asked for our check and went to pay. When we told the cashier that we had been sitting outside for over 30 minutes he told us our waiter 'had been in the kitchen making chips because they were out.' As a manger myself, I am appalled at the level of service we received tonight as well as being blatantly lied to cover for an employee's horrible service. I have worked in retail for over 8 years, so I have an understanding for unreasonable customers. This was blatantly horrible customer service and there was nothing done by management to rectify the situation.

I feel compelled (...obligated) to write an updated review after one of my best gal pals became aghast at the lacking enthusiasm in my previous review. Cielito became one of my go-to spots for debauchery and Mexican food, and I freakin' love Mexican food. I also love debauchery, and the staff is so friendly and accommodating, they have been known to pour Pancho Villa directly from the bottle into our crazy lil mouths. Pro tip: the mole is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I discovered this far too late in the game, just a few months before I moved. The remodel is pretty snazzy in my opinion.

My Spanish grad student roommate loved this place and it was her favorite Mexican restaurant and that's how I discovered this place. This is a pretty decent Mexican restaurant in Lawrence, but I agree with a previous reviewer, it's more about the atmosphere here. have the largest outdoor patio seating anywhere in the downtown area. I absolutely love sitting out here during the spring/summer nights. Tonight they had live music from 5p-10pm. The food here is nothing "mouth watering, we have to go only here," but the food is pretty authentic and I've never been disappointed with my order. I love the veggie quesadilla. Tacos here are also really good. I have gotten takeout here and they always provide good chips and salsa even though you aren't eating in the restaurant. The margaritas are very good here. Much better than the ones loaded with sugar at el mezcal. Lastly, they do salsa dancing nights here, which I haven't been to in a long time but are a lot of fun. They clear an area indoors and there are some very talented dancers who usually participated and then of course the amateurs like me.

I love Mexican food and the food, beverages, prices, and atmosphere at Cielito Lindo did not disappoint! They have a great patio and it's the perfect place to sit on a beautiful day. I've had both their sangria and margaritas. The sangria was very good, though it did not have any fruit in it and I wish it came in a bigger glass. The price for it is fair though. The margaritas are big and potent! Like other reviewers, they have some great guacamole! Their chips and salsa are pretty tasty too. Salsa is not spicy though, but is still delicious. I love their beef flautas. I've been to other restaurants where the flautas are overcooked, burnt, and or dry. These are perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, and the meat is perfectly cooked on the inside. The service is friendly and fast and the prices are very reasonable. I like that Cielito Lindo is on New Hampshire and not Mass Street because it's a bit quieter and more relaxing without the large crowds.

  • Jennifer H.

The good: fabulous patio, killer cheese dip The bad: margaritas are not very good, sometimes the salsa is watery, methinks one of the servers is certifiably insane. The ugly: inside. I won't go here unless I can sit outside.

    (3)
  • Megan B.

Really fun atmosphere, especially on game days. Salsa is the perfect spicy. Beef enchiladas and fish tacos were super tasty, very fresh! Jumbo margaritas at $8+ were delicious and a bargain. The staff is great and service is quick. This is a keeper.

The two star rating description is perfect "Ive had better". This is a typical mexican restaurant with typical items and typical food. Typically bad service from the waitstaff who greedily over services tables that are doing tequila shots. Ive been here a lot and can say that the personal salsa dish is great. Taking someone here for their birthday and watching them put on a funny hat is great. If you have a big group and need a reservation for the immediate future, this large venue can probably handle it. The food is not very good, and neither is the service. It could be a three star if the service was better, which it used to be. Over the course of the last 2 years, Cieto Lindo has gone downhill. Hopefully they stay around and fix their problems. If you want cheap drinks, come here. If you want better food, service and drinks, go to La Parilla.

  • Nick H.

As much as I like to eat here, tonight was single handily the worst service I've ever experienced. The waiter had to check the menu when we ordered to confirm that the item was even on there. Our food took forever, drinks were empty, and he never came back to refill the chips and salsa. Should have got up and left long before we even ordered.

So, I'm really not sure what was up last night. The sad things was, I was the sober one! It was my best friends 21st and as many a reviewer has stated, the level of atmosphere was great. Games on, drinks, party scene. However things fell off quickly as it appeared the staff were really unprepared for the party. Chips and dip were ordered as we were seated but arrived 25 minutes into the affair. Only after the second round of chips with queso did water even make its way to the table and only after I took it upon myself to go up to the bar and convince the bartender to pour some glasses. It's possible that the staff thought everyone was drunk so they didn't need to care. But in the meantime, many of use waited hungrily for food to come...for an hour and 45 minutes. For five dishes. Disaster. I wasn't ready though. Really they should have given me longer. Because my expectations for the food even after an hour and 45 wait were still too high. The food came out bland, dry and derivative. It's a popular place, and maybe it was a rough night for them (though did not appear busy) but I felt bad that my friend had to be served so poorly for his birthday.

  • Jaime V.

I went here for the first time today. The place looks really nice but the service is not the best. Our server never went to our table to ask if we needed refills. And the place was not busy at all our waiter was sitting down with other employees. Food was okay not the best Mexican food in Lawrence! Don't see myself going back.

  • Katherine J.

Cielito Lindo has gone downhill! This place opened right before I moved away. I went here and remember the owner asking us how they could get more people to come in. Go here on a Friday or Saturday night and it's obvious that they no longer have that problem. They have a great patio facing New Hampshire street. The food was never amazing but the margarita's were pretty good. The last time I came here the margarita was so awful that I sent it back and got a beer instead. I love margarita's but this was just awful. The waitress said they hadn't altered how they make them but I swear they used to be better. Also had some guacamole that was gross. I still like the chips and salsa but come on. Why come here when you can go to El Patron and have amazing food and strong margaritas? Oh yeah, the drive.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
