I went here wanting some breakfast tacos and decided to stay and try it. I'll have to say that the taco Buffett is a horrible mess. All the food seemed to have come out of a can. The lettuce was probably the freshest item there. I will never return

Taco bar is gross and definitely overpriced in my opinion. Reminded me of grade school cafeteria food. Maybe the made-to-order burritos are better. The lunchtime crowd of 20-something to 50-something men on their breaks seemed to really dig it.

My favorite restaurant! You can't beat the all bean Super Burrito with lettuce, extra cheese, and extra sauce. That with the free chips they give you. I don't know if you can truly call yourself a Lawrencian before you've eaten you first Super Burrito. The family that owns Border Bandido and works there are super nice. It's one of the oldest restaurants in Lawrence. Check it out!

There seems to be some confusion in the reviews about just what kind of "Mexican" food this place sells. For those of you who want fresh ingredients, non-gmo, no processed foods and freshly grilled? I'm sorry, you've clicked on the wrong restaurant. Are you nursing off a massive hangover because you've spent all night inundating your body with enough chemical compounds to kill a horse? CONGRATULATIONS, this place is for you, oh you party animal you. This food is not good for you; it IS heated in the microwave; it IS processed food and if you asked the eager to please staff about GMO I am sure they'd look very confused. This is massive amounts of artery clogging, belt breaking goodness. I ordered the Texas burrito and cheese sauce. I knew full well what to expect. In the spirit of 50 shades of Grey being so popular... My inner fat kid was "bouncing up and down like a small child waiting for ice cream." When I got it, I was not disappointed. As a quick note though. Unless you currently / are planning on becoming a 500 pound "human being" or a competitive eater, plan on splitting this meal (and you probably should NOT make this a regular spot.)

First off, if a Mexican restaurant's name is spelled incorrectly, that is not a good sign. There is no such word as "bandido". "Bandito", Mexican for "bandit", yes ... "bandido", absolutely not. The reviews on Yelp were mixed, so I did not get around to trying Border Bandido until a rainy Saturday afternoon when I found that I had little to do, so why not eat tacos! The facility is clean and functional with the taco bar prominently placed in the middle of the room in front of the kitchen. The sign on the wall stated "Buffet Hours: 11am - 2pm, 5pm-etc" and because it was a little after 4pm, I was a bit confused. I asked the woman behind the counter if they were open and she told me "yes, the buffet is open all day on Saturday and enchiladas are included in the price ($9), so let me know and I'll make them to order". I took my plate and selected my tortilla shell, a choice of crispy corn or flour, soft flour, and a crispy bowl shaped tortilla for taco salads I presume, I chose crispy corn. I added taco meat (ground beef - shredded chicken also available), a guacamole-type concoction that looked like something out of a container, shredded cheddar cheese, pico di gallo, diced white onion, shredded lettuce, and salsa. There were also jalapeńos, black olives, tomatoes, potato salad, chocolate mousse, and cookies if so inclined. Chili con carne and chili con queso are also available. The tortilla shells were crisp and the other ingredients appeared fresh, the taco meat well seasoned. If your in the mood for lots of tacos, Border Bandido is an inexpensive option. The enchiladas were an added benefit, so I ordered one beef and one cheese and onion. The beef enchilada's tortilla was too thin and barely able to contain the ground beef. The cheese and onion enchilada actually was not bad with decent tasting red sauce and melted cheese on top, comparable to most of the other mediocre enchiladas available throughout Lawrence. Border Bandido is very basic, offering a decent, abundant meal of fair American-Mexican food at a reasonable price. KU students must love the place! I thought it was not bad, not great, but if you are in the mood for LOTS O' TACOS ... Border Bandido is the place for you! CombatCritic Gives Border Bandido 6 Bombs Out of 10 ... BOMBAS ARE BUENAS!

This place is disgusting! Every thing they serve is cooked in the microwave. And it tastes bad. When I went there for the taco bar at lunch it was disgusting. And for dessert they had warm pudding with stale vanilla wafers! Thats all they had for dessert! Taco bell or Taco Johns is way better.

Taco bar...awesome. Texas burrito....heaven. Yes, they use the microwave to melt the cheese for you. So what?

Not everyone is going to like Border Bandido. But, I CAN say this. My wife was born and raised in Mexico and she really likes their tacos. Some of the previuos reviews have mentioned the fact that they use microwaves. As an electrician, I have been in many commercial kitchens over the years. You'll be hard pressed to find a restaurant that doesn't use microwaves. The difference is Border Bandido makes your food right in front of you. Most other restaurants keep the food prep hidden from their customers. The fact that they have been open since 1970 says something. That's longer than most of you reading this have been alive, including me. If you are in the mood for Mexican, give it a shot. It's not gourmet, but it's a far sight better than Taco Bell.

I'm frankly surprised that the other reviewers never mentioned that Border Bandido uses microwaves to cook all of the orders. There's an actual bank of 4-5 microwaves that you can see when you order. The food is tasteless and the "cheese sauce" looks like processed hell. Seriously, nostalgia must be blinding for people who enjoy this place. That aside, the staff really are nice people, so I almost gave it two stars.

This restaurant looms big in my memories. During my college days, this was just about my favorite hangout. I and my friends, Harold and Allen, would come here after or before football and basketball games (as well as other times)--chowing down on their wonderful, huge Texas Burritos (my favorite: the Texas: combination meat and beans, with sour cream, onions and lettuce added, along with extra cheese--muy bueno!). Since those days, I've found better fare, but the food at Border Bandido remains near and dear to my heart, and I would be eating there with some regularity still--except that they keep the strangest hours now (I'll update with those hours after my next visit). Looking forward to my next nostalgic dive into a Texas Burrito.

The food is not the highest quality, but it is pretty good and available without limit. The taco bar is decent, but its the free enchiladas that set it over the top.

I was a little leery about this place at first. But I thought, "Hey, at least my visit will make a good story!" I got a burrito. Yes they microwaved it. But you know what? I had a difficult time trying to stop eating it. I'm not a big taco bar fan, so I can't comment on that. But the burrito was quite tasty.

My family and I have been coming here for 25+ years. My most favorite restaurant on the entire planet. If I was on death row I would want my last meal to be a Super Texas Burrito, All meat, with lettuce, extra sauce with a side of chips (this thing probably weighs in at 2+ lbs). This is a no frills fast-foodish Mexican place. They have a nice all you can eat taco bar and a selection of burritos and other items you can order from the counter. They also have a few beers by the bottle. The only odd thing here is their hours which can be a bit flakey. Everytime I am back home in KC I make the drive to Lawrence, I suggest you do the same.

Wish I had a do over on this one. Had to go here with family cause that was their pick. They use a freaking microwave here! I can't see how this place is in business. My advice is Perkins across the street would have been better. Just don't do it!

This place has the biggest burrito I have ever seen! Really! Even the little burritos are huge. LOL If you're not craving a juicy, meaty, beany, cheesy burrito you can always get the taco bar. Also, the people are really nice. They have weird hours, like they close in the middle of the day, but it's worth starving an hour until they reopen. Maybe then you can actually eat an entire burrito!

DO NOT GO TO BORDER BANDIDO! Horrible, horrible, horrible. Chicken was over seasoned and ground beef was tasteless. I've had better beans out of a can. Taco Bell offers more authentic and better tasting Mexican food at half the price!

I've been going to Border Bandido for years. They've been around forever and they even used to deliver, which was dangerous! The burritos are HUGE and if you're really hungry, they have an all you can eat taco bar.

A restaurant that brags about all of the other businesses that it has outlived, while the floors and walls are dirty, really has nothing to brag about. McDonald's has been in business for over 70 years, and they taste like crap too. Bill C., there is another way to melt cheese on top of a burrito, it is called "heat". This "heat" comes from a tortilla that was warmed on a flat grill, then filled with hot, fresh ingredients. I don't really care about the microwaves, I use one at home to re-heat leftovers, just like Border Bandido. By the way, a real burrito has the cheese melted on the inside of it so you can eat it with your hands! No fork required.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
