I stumbled upon Whiskey Creek on a road trip and was oh so hopeful, but those hopes were dashed. Keep in mind, my expectations were low as I thought I'd be getting some fast food for lunch, but was lured in by the sign promising a wood fired grill. There was a banner advertising lunch specials. Now it was indeed my fault for not remembering that it was a Sunday and that most restaurants don't serve lunch on weekends. However, the prices seemed quite steep for most of their entrees. Having four of us, and hoping to spend about $8-12 per person, I quickly saw that wasn't going to happen. I opted for the chicken fettuccine pasta, hoping that the chicken would be grilled nicely. It came out looking EXACTLY like a Marie Callendar's frozen entree... the chicken made of compressed white meat and soggy. It lacked any flavor at all... blech! The other entrees were equally as sad... the only one that didn't disappoint was chicken fingers... kinda hard to screw that one up. Had the prices been in a reasonable range, I would have only been mildly disappointed. For the prices they demand, I would expect a quality meal... but it was worse than the quality I would expect at a place like Applebee's and at a price 40-60% higher. Thanks but no thanks...

This place was AWESOME. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. From being greeted at the front door to the service at the table. Our server was very knowledgable and friendly. We got the baby back ribs and the bacon wrapped shrimp along with the Tumbling tumbleweed drink. Everything was delicious and the meat fell right off the ribs and flavoring was excellent! Would definitely return!

Gross.. Poor service and food was not good.. They were out of many items on the menu as well.

Flat iron steak AND grilled vegetables tasted strongly of lighter fluid...waitress seemed to indicate that it was normal because they had just lit the grill. Will not go back.

Ended up here when everything else in Hays KS was closed due to a snow storm First the beer was served way to cold, I could not taste the malt or hops in my fat tire. Only cheap beer is suppose to be served ice cold. As for my dinner, I had the Pit Roasted Chicken with broccoli and fire grilled vegetables The entree was dry and the seasoning was uncreative. The chicken was served on a bed of rice that was over cooked to my preference The grilled vegetables were served still on the skewer, a gimmicky move. As far as taste it was covered in an overly sweet lemony syrup. On general over priced food for mediocre food. The one thing I will give them is that the wait staff was friendly and attentive, but good front of house can never make up for poor food.

We eat here when staying at the hotel next door. We come for a cold beer and appetizers. We have never had a full meal but the Tootsie Roll appetizers is to die for. Cream cheese, scallions and shrimp wrapped in a wonton dough and deep fried! Nom nom nummy

A Texas Roadhouse knockoff. Pretty good service, a bit pricey but it is steak. I definitely left full, but the bread was my favorite part of the meal.

Food good but service so far below normal, you'll develop cobwebs waiting for your food. Husband and I will never go there again. Our time is valuable too, but they don't seem to care.

Had the jalapeño burger, salad and water. Nothing to write home about but it was good enough. I was satisfied and would come back. Service was very good. Overall a pleasant experience.

Meal was just so so but the service was excellent. But for the price point I think I would expect more.

Stopped here on the way home from Colorado. Ordered the Prime rib and loaded baked potato. I was told I had to get the 16oz to be able to have medium rare. It was tough and half of it was fat and inedible. Potato was barely warm and dry. I told my waitress I was not happy with the meal. It was very expensive and manager took $3 off the bill. Will never go back.

The service was outstanding & the food great. I had the French dip & a cup of potato soup, which awesome. Hubby had filet, baked potato & salad. Then we shared a giant peach cobbler that divine! We hope to make it on another trip!

It's a steakhouse... That doesn't know how to cook steak properly. I ordered my steak medium-well. It was sent out rare. I sent it back. It came back medium-rare on one side and medium-well on the other. Learn your protein temperatures! Also, there were two workers standing by the door as I fumbled with a toddler and stroller, trying to get through both doors. If you have free hands and your job is.. Oh I don't know... Customer service... Open the flipping door when you see a patron struggling. Positives: The waitress was nice and her service was awesome. My son's grilled cheese meal was great also.

I had the 8oz Flat Iron steak which was great, good flavor cooked properly no grissle, with mashed potatoes and broccoli. My wife tried to order the overnight brisket but they were out and instead settled on Pulled pork which was dry and had little flavor, even ordering extra bbq sauce she couldn't get through half of it. Service was nice appetizer and bread came out quickly and with a little time before the food which is nice to have.

Great steak! I enjoyed it quite a bit! Only thing was service was a little slow.

7 bucks for a 3-oz glass of mediocre wine, which took forever! Bad service. Good thing the bread is complimentary because it's nasty. After all that, the entrees were actually better than expected, hence the second star.

Mehhhh....Ordered the chicken and avocado salad; it was lacking chicken and avocado. Ribeye was pretty good but was ordered medium well and received as well-done. Actually stopped here because my four year old daughter wanted mac and cheese, figured this place had the best homemade mac and cheese in town. Got there to find its Kraft from the box! Server was very nice. They give a 10% discount to military members, kudos!!

A variety of options, mostly cattle related. The decor, also cattle related. Good service, hot food, and free bread/peanuts. I also appreciated the sweet smelling bathrooms. I thought the air freshener was sweet tart scented but it was, in fact, Hawaiian Sunset.

We stopped here on our way through Kansas last week. The food was good and it wasn't too crowded. The service was decent, a bit slow for not being too busy, but overall a fine place for some steakhouse chain restaurant food.

long wait for drinks, ordered rare and medium rare prime rib. neither was pink. the special was crab legs. they came out soft and tasteless. and after everything else.

The Ribeye steak was very juicy and tasty. I also tried there house steak sauce ZESTY. It was very good. Veggies were ok not great. Service was very good.

Saw the billboards to this place from about 75 miles out, so I just had to try it. Was actually rather disappointed. The food was too expensive for the quality provided. My waitress was too busy gabbing with the bartender to serve me. From my seat, I could see the back side of the bar. Not a good plan for someone who used to run a bar. I wanted to call the health inspector right then. I won't go into specifics because you REALLY don't want to know. Just keep driving.

The salad was fresh and the chicken was very tender. Clean and well kept restaurant and they got the food out very fast.

We experienced very friendly & quick service from a wonderful server named Adam. He was even so sweet to give us a quarter for our 2 year old son to ride the mechanical horse. The food arrived extremely quickly. It was good, not spectacular but far better than I expected to find while driving thru a small Kansas town. We are very pleased with our dining experience.

The food was very very good and the conference rooms was stunning! I hope a meeting happens here again soon !!!!

We were skeptical to eat here due to the reviews. I ordered the baby back ribs. They were so tender and delicious. Homemade mashed potatoes, buttery steamed broccoli. The sweet corn bread was delicious as well. My son loved his chicken tenders. They were very busy, but it was worth the wait.

Stopped in here for a quick bite to eat and after reading the reviews was a lil hesitant but we were pleasantly surprised!! Great waitress Kearstin who was superb in every way!! Split the brisket and ribs with the Mr...the fall off the bone ribs with lick yer fingers yummy sauce GREAT! Brisket ehhhh not my favorite...needed some more bbq sauce for sure. Could've had a better draft beer selection but I'm spoiled being from CO!!

If this restaurant was anywhere else but Hays, I'd give it only two stars. If there's a good restaurant in Hays, please clue me in. I've been to Hays about a dozen times through the years, and I have yet to find a restaurant that's more than just "survival eating." Anyway . . . Whiskey Creek is OK. Hostesses and waitstaff are friendly and attentive. The dining area is roomy. The restrooms are clean. My wife had the bar-b-que chicken with a side salad, sweet potato and cornbread. She was very complimentary of the chicken - tasty and juicy. Being a southern boy - she's a damn Yankee - I ate her cornbread. It was a far cry from my Alabama aunt's, but it was moist and tasty nevertheless. My wife gave her meal four stars. Well . . . I should have known better than to order a salad in a meat lovers' restaurant, but I try to eat light on road trips. Whiskey Creek was hyping about half a dozen salads for summer, so I took the bait and ordered the Oriental chicken salad. It was mediocre at best. The iceberg lettuce was wet, so much so that water collected in the bottom of the bowl. The portion of chicken was light. Was that a half a breast of Cornish hen? A few wedges of canned Mandarin oranges garnished the bowl, and I doubt the 2-oz cup of dressing was made in-house. By the time I finished the salad I was wishing I'd ordered something else. I hate that feeling. I have to compliment the complementary bread, though. Two stars from me; four from my wife; thus the three star average.

We recently had a family gathering for a college graduation in Hays. We chose this restaurant because our kids had some coupons. It was a great choice. 3 of our guests were arriving late and the staff were gracious enough to save the table next to us to seat them so we could all be in the same vicinity. Our servers were excellent, kept our drinks full, and checked on us regularly. The food was very good, hot upon arrival, and appropriately priced. Restaurant was clean including the restrooms. We'd go again and recommend this location.

Well, the only word I can come up with is disappointing. I was traveling through the area and thought I would try Whiskey Creek. I was really craving an onion blossom and a prime rib. For starters we had to go get our own peanuts. Since this is a novelty of the restaurant I assumed we would have been offered some. Then the waiter asked if we wanted bread. Half way through the meal we had to ask for it again because we still hadn't gotten any bread. My onion blossom showed up and was horrible. The onion hadn't been cut all the way through so you couldn't pull the onions off. All you would get is a small chunk of breading. When I dug to the center of the onion it was nothing but half cooked batter inside. We pushed it aside without hardly touching it. When the waiter came with our meal I told him the onion was horrible and all he asked was if we were through with it and if he could take our plates. The prime rib tasted like ham and had been grilled like a steak. I'm not sure if they have ever cooked a prime rib before but it isn't supposed to be grilled unless requested. I guess I am still craving a GOOD onion blossom and prime rib. Any suggestions?

Right next to the Days Inn, it's a convenient stroll home if you want to have a drink or two after a long day of driving. It's great to see a big restaurant and not a truck stop or McDonald's at this point of my road trip. WC Wood Fired Grill is pretty decent- they had a little internet terminal on the bar side but the internet was down when we were there. Everything is light wood and bright but I would think with a name like Whiskey Creek the tables should be a darker wood? Food was decent- the chicken tender salad was covered in a thick layer of shredded cheese and the chicken tenders were chopped up but you could still see that they were deep fried to a dark brown. I think it's more about the taste of the fried chicken tenders and cheese than any of the lettuce around here. Just grateful for an easy dinner and a clean cool pillow in my motel.

Highly recommend the Flat Iron Steak. Delicious!! One of the best I've ever had. My wife had the Rib Eye and it was also a great steak. Service was great and price was reasonable for a steak house. It was a good choice while we were in Hays visiting the Hospital.

Ate there on 7/12/13 for dinner. Had the Hawaiian chicken. Chicken was so tough could hardly cut with knife. None of it had any flavor - not even the small bits of pineapple. My husband ordered the prime rib which was so tough he could not eat it. Very expensive meal for not being able to eat it. We had been disappointed in the past here but after a year decided to give them a try but not just disappointed this time - just downright mad for going back. Never again! Even had to track down the waitress just to get our check.

This place is just a more expensive, gimmicky Applebes that costs too much for the product, do not go here unless you want to be disappointed

I stayed in Hays the other night and was excited to see an actual restaurant off the I-70 exit where you can sit down instead of ordering at the counter. This place has a Texas Roadhouse kind of feel with big, wood booths with buckets of peanut at the table. Our server was great but the food seemed a little overpriced for what it was. I got some kind of Mexican themed salad with black beans, corn, guac, etc. but it disturbed me that on the menu they serve it with a raspberry vinaigrette. Gross. How about a lime vinaigrette or a mexi ranch? My sister got the chicken alfredo and she said it was pretty weak....maybe because it was yellow. When is alfredo sauce yellow? Their appetizers looked really good and you really can't mess up on that so I would probably go back for that but I would stay away from the entrees, overpriced and just blah.

We thought this place was excellent. Had the filet, flat iron steak and bacon wrapped grilled shrimp. Steaks were cooked as we ordered them. We all had the grilled vegetables and really liked them. Very reasonably priced. The service was a little spotty, but the waitress said 2 people had called in sick. Certainly beats the other choices in Hays.

What a disgrace to Hays. We've been here twice and we won't be coming back. A table that was seated at the same time as us had drinks and appetizers before our waitress even came to the table. Another table that came in 10 minutes after us had been waited on and had drinks. Still no waitress for us. About a minute before we were getting ready to leave, our waitress arrived. I asked why other tables who arrived after us were being served and we weren't? She said she got "hung up" in the front. No apology, just a lame excuse. We were the only three tables in the entire section, it was a Wednesday night, they weren't even busy. We ordered. My food was fine, but not worth waiting 20 minutes to order. My kids had $5 Mac n Cheese, which was clearly nothing more than Kraft from a box. They didn't even use real cheese. Don't go here, try Gella's or some other place downtown. I'm not sure how they stay open. They must get enough one time traffic from the interstate combined with their high prices to make money.

Oh Whiskey Creek, your Jim Beam sirloin and shrimpy cream cheese Tootsy rolls were the absolute highlight of our drive through Kansas. My friend and I split the meal and it was the perfect size and remained a conversation topic for the next two days of driving.

  • Alex S.

Prepackaged food, semi-heated and served. We ordered Southwest Tootsie Rolls, Overnight Brisket sandwich, Ribs, and Pulled pork dinners. The food was low quality (i.e., cheap cuts) and over $35 for the two of us - overpriced for the food quality. If you think it was the beverage tab that ran up the bill, think again. One of us drank lemonade and the other, water. Limited beverage choices on the menu. The restaurant has poor seating layout. To make matters worse, the waitress forgot we there and failed to return. All this in 30 minutes. The place is all flash, no bang. It survives because of it's "convenient" location next to a "No-Tell Motel".

    (1)
  • Michelle W.

Don't bother. It's very spendy for what you get. Won't be back and wish we had read the reviews FIRST! Waste of money and time.

Stopped here on our way through Kansas as it was pretty much the only "city" to stop in. As for the food and service, it was pretty awesome. I remember loving the grilled vegetables they had with my chicken plate. Ugh, they had this sweet balsamic glaze on them and it was damn delicious. Also, the sweet potato was awesome, and this is from a sweet potato fiend. Overall, if you're driving across 70, you'll have to stop through. It's really one of the few places in Hays that looked sanitary.

I had the brisket which was a little dry. Good sauces. Country fried steak was normal/typical. Lexie the server was great.

  • Brian L.

We stayed in a nearby hotel and were pleasantly surprised by this place. In what they serve and the atmosphere, it strikes you as chain restaurant kind of place (think Bennigan's / Ruby Tuesday / Applebees's) but we liked the food quite a bit more than typical for that sort of place. It's a good place to stop near the hotels and I-70.

    (4)
  • Michael C.

I had high hopes for this restaurant seeing all the good reviews. However tonight must not have been their better night. The service was adequate, but not real attentive. My son ordered his steak medium and got it rare. I ordered my prime rib medium-rare and got it medium well. My daughter ordered her pulled pork sandwich and couldn't eat it. My son sent his steak back to get cooked a little more and it took nearly 15 minutes to get it back. It came back medium-rare this time. He ate it as the rest of us were nearly done with our meals. Though we were traveling, I don't think this will be a choice on our next trip through the area.

I saw on my trusty GPS named Matilda, that this was the largest city about halfway from Kansas City and Denver. When we entered Hays most of the town, had buildings looking sketchy and as if they were filled of lot-lizards and their trucking companions...finally we saw Whiskey Creek, it looked new and nice. We went inside, it had a bar and very friendly and cute server ( I do not remember the food, it was pretty good, but our waiter was really cute). It was decently priced. And it was very very clean. And the food was quite good.

Traveling from KC to Denver. Friends told us about this, clean friendly place. Pretty quick service. Pulled pork very good

  • J R.

Meh. Slow service. Sub par food. High prices. Totally not worth it. Started off with the free bread that was stale. Got the pork chop plate, came with two tiny pieces of fatty meat that was over salted. Macaroni was pretty good but broccoli was still wet from the strainer. I know this is Hays but Gellas is right down the street and I think I'll be heading back there next time.

Whiskey Creek is a small chain in NE, KS, MO and FL according to their web site. I ate at the Hays, KS location and found it to be a very decent BBQ / Steak place. The Baby Back ribs were very tasty and fall off the bone eating. Served with some good traditional BBQ sauce on the ribs with a choice of 3 sauces on the side. The honey mustard side sauce was exceptionally good. The pulled pork was served without a sauce, the beef brisket had the same BBQ as the ribs. All the items while good, perhaps needed a bit more smoke flavor. Meat was excellent quality. Did not try any of the steaks. All in all, a good value if you happen across a Whiskey Creek store.
