Passing through we saw the sign. It is not a real easy place to find. We only found it by accident after coming back from the Hospital. (always clean bathrooms when you travel) We got right in and were sat down at the very first table in the door. Kind of an odd feeling since we were practically on the threshold. We sat side by side with our faces towards the door with the entire dining room and the TV behind us. Service was good. I ordered some kind of a grilled chicken salad. My wife ordered a chicken dish. I noticed mine did not taste right, kind of a mix of old olive oil and artichoke. I wondered if this was more of a Spanish dish due to the odd Mediterranean taste. I ate every bit of it once I got used to it. I did break chips over the top just for some crunch. We were given chips and a bowl of what seems like tomato paste. We were also given some salsa that was quite good. My wife decided not to eat all her dish so I ate her beans (average) and the remaining chicken lettuce cheese mixture. Sure enough it had the same odd taste. I have ate Mexican food for decades and never encountered such an odd taste. I survived and a day later have no gastric distress. But next time through I will keep the petal to the metal.

We have been to Gutierrez many times as we live in Hays. In the past we have received excellent service. We went for the first time in about 1 year tonight and we will never be going back. Although their food is okay (Husband really likes it, I think it's okay), and their Mango Martini is heaven, the service was so incredibly poor, I was about to throw my water across the room and make a scene. Luckily we left before I had the chance. Here are the things we didn't like: -They use to have a drink menu, they threw the old ones away to bring in new ones, however they didn't make the new ones before they threw the old ones away. This makes it very difficult to order drinks, wouldn't you say. -We went in around 7:30, they close at 9:00. Plenty of time to eat, however they were sweeping (with those loud carpet sweeper/rolling vacuum's) and we would have to stop our conversation until they left. We ended up leaving around 8:10, while 2-3 of them were "rolling vacuuming" around us...so rude. Obviously, they wanted us out. -Our waitress also had issues, too. She was short, unfriendly and generally unpleasant. It felt like we were a huge burden to her. We were out celebrating a big event in our lives and were treated with disrespect and rudeness. I gave this one star, because there isn't food good enough on the planet to make me want to subject myself to such poor service. Needless to say, we will never be back.

Gross. Took four bites and left! As close as I could tell, the enchilada was made of boiled (unseasoned) ground beef and velveeta.

Food is good and decently priced. The owner can be a jerk to his staff. Good place for a date, nice atmosphere. Plenty of room for groups. They also cater if you're looking for that sort of thing.

This place should be on Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares! We walked in the side door thinking it was the front door, and the bartender reluctantly sat us at a table in a stuffy restaurant with hideous table cloths and decor. After a long day on the road, ice cold margaritas sounded great, so we ordered two on the rocks. One came back on the rocks, the other was blended. At this point, we just wanted to get our food and get to the hotel. There were three occupied tables in the restaurant, close to each other. The waitress would check one table, then go to the kitchen, then check another, then go to the kitchen, then check the third. So there was a lot of waiting and trying to catch her attention. My boyfriend accidentally knocked over his drink and asked for a new one and some napkins. The waitress told him not to do it again and seemed scared to replace his drink. While we were waiting for our food, we snacked on chips and ketchup. At least that's what the salsa tasted like. When the food came, (luckily I ordered a house salad) his chimichanga was soggy and dripping with grease and processed cheese. The rice was old and the beans were burnt. We got out of there as soon as we could and as we passed Arbys and other fast food restaurants, were regretting our decision to try a local Hays establishment. Gellas diner downtown is a much better choice. Don't waste your time and money at Gutierrez!

Excellent! Offers lite and fit menu with low carb optons. Lots of made from scratch including the margaritas.

Gutierrez is probably my favourite place to eat in Hays. The food is not strictly authentic but is always fresh, flavoursome and filling. Their margaritas are very good - made from scratch and they are cheap - although I recommend them over ice rather than blended. I especially like their Chimichangas which are crispy but not too greasy. Generally, solid-good service from wait-staff. My main complaint is that along with the obligatory cheesy decor the place can be a bit dingy at times especially over lunch when a bit of daylight is always appreciated! Overall, I recommend - good food (especially for small town Hays) at a reasonable price. I have yet to be disappointed.

Not good. I had to explain what a Cadillac Margarita was and the food was as generic as possible, like this review.

We were travelling on our way to Colorado Springs and stumbled into Gutierrez for lunch. We had a great selection from the lunch menu and our food was good. The service was excellent.

This has to be the worst excuse for Mexican food I have ever had in my entire life. Anyone who liked the food here obviously has no taste whatsoever. Although this is the midwest.... However, I suspect most of the short positive reviews are 'plants'. The one time I ate here it was so bad the bill was waived and I paid nothing. I swear they had a bunch of high school kids preparing the food. The fajitas were some rubbery pieces of reheated meat doused with some generic chili sauce and served with shaved processed cheese. Disgusting. If you want decent Mexican food in Hays go to Jaliscos on Vine St.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
